Abilene, Kansas – Kansas Tourism’s Sunflower Summer program once again brought thousands of visitors to Abilene in 2025, creating unforgettable memories for families and showcasing why Abilene is celebrated as one of the best small towns in America.

This season, 7,583 tickets were claimed&nbsp;at Abilene’s attractions, resulting in $94,559 in reimbursements&nbsp;for local museums, historic sites, theatres, and experiences. Kansas Tourism extends its heartfelt thanks to the community for making this year’s program a resounding success.

“Sunflower Summer is one of the best programs our state has ever done,” said one participant through the mobile app. “It encouraged our family to explore new communities and try new things we wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Abilene’s attractions were top performers in the program, drawing visitors from across the state:

From train rides on the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad to exploring presidential history at the Eisenhower Library and Museum, enjoying live performances at Great Plains Theatre, and stepping back in time at Old Abilene Town and the Seelye Mansion, Abilene offered a full menu of adventures.

“Programs like Sunflower Summer make a big difference for both Kansas families and the communities they visit,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. “We are thrilled that thousands of Kansans chose Abilene for their summer adventures, helping us grow tourism while providing quality educational experiences for families.”

Sunflower Summer is a Kansas Tourism initiative that provides free admission to participating attractions across the state for Kansas students (Pre-K through 12th grade) and an accompanying adult. In 2025, the program recorded 197,375 total tickets claimed statewide, benefiting 98,283 adults and 131,495 students.

﻿﻿Elves on the Loose: Santa's Secret Helpers will be the theme for the annual Christmas Parade hosted by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce ﻿.

This year, the elves have slipped out of Santa’s workshop and are popping up everywhere! Some are lending a hand in surprising ways, while others are up to playful mischief. From toy-making and decorating to helping in the community or stirring up holiday fun, the parade theme invites floats to imagine elves bringing the Christmas spirit to life in all kinds of creative and unexpected places.

The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 28.&nbsp;﻿It will follow a route on 6th Street from Eisenhower to Heritage Park.

_-Geary County Commissioners agreed Monday to authorize the closure of Taylor Road on October 2 from 8 a.m. to&nbsp; 4 p.m. The purpose of the closure is for employee blade operator training. Nine county employees will participate in the training.

Corrections Sgt. David Stevenson received the Life Saving Award from Sheriff Nate Boeckman. Corrections Lt. Victoria Butler, Corrections Officers Jadlyn Kallsen and Kayla Lane each received the Sheriff's Accommodation Award.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The awards were presented during the Geary County Commission meeting.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) maintains national law enforcement, academy and communications accreditation through the Commission on Law Enforcement for Accreditation (CALEA). 

As a part of this process, an opportunity is provided to citizens of Kansas for public feedback via the&nbsp;CALEA&nbsp;Portal which can be located here:

These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. 

The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide KHP with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the agency's pursuit of professional excellence.

It is important to know that&nbsp;CALEA&nbsp;is not an investigatory body and subsequently, the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. 

Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgment to submissions. However, the information will be considered in context to its relevance to compliance with standards and the tenets of&nbsp;CALEA® Accreditation.

Joining Eggleston as a finalist is Dr. Jessica Dain of Piper USD 202 and Mr. Jamie Rumford of Scott County USD 466. The 2026 Kansas Superintendent of the Year will be announced on Monday, October 6. Eggleston, Dain and Rumford will be recognized at the 2026 Superintendent of the Year Gala on Thursday, Nov. 13 in Wichita.

Dr. Eggleston has served as the Superintendent of Schools in Geary County Schools USD 475 every year since 2019. During his tenure, Dr. Eggleston has overseen transformative initiatives that address the academic, social and emotional needs of all USD 475 students.

Under his leadership, USD 475 has received several distinctions and accolades, including Lincoln Elementary being named a National Blue Ribbon School last September, which demonstrates his commitment to educational excellence. His strategic vision includes robust financial planning and community partnerships, ensuring sustainable success and equity for over 7,000 students and 1,300 employees.

Dr. Eggleston is a Colonel in the Army Reserves with over 30 plus years of military experience. Eggleston and his wife, Regina, reside in Fort Riley, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 An 18-year-old man reported an unknown suspect battered him and fled.&nbsp;

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Police will host a seat check event

ABILENE - The Eisenhower Foundation’s "I Like Ike" Capital Campaign is well underway, raising funds for a new state-of-the-art Education Center aimed at inspiring future generations through innovative learning and civic engagement.

“We celebrated The Eisenhower Foundation’s 80th anniversary on June 22,” said Emily Miller, Director of Development for the Eisenhower Foundation. “This capital campaign is our way to make sure our organization secures Ike’s legacy for another 80 years.”

The Foundation is at 74% of its $17 million dollar goal, having already received substantial support from the Sunderland Foundation in Overland Park, the Patterson Family Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri, the William T. Kemper Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Anne C. Eagles estate. Additionally, the Foundation’s board of directors has come together to make a collective six-figure donation. 

The State of Kansas has also pledged a $5 million matching grant.

The center will serve both public and K–12 audiences through in-person and online programming. It will feature several dynamic elements, including an Oval Office replica that will offer visitors a tangible connection to Eisenhower’s time in office; a state-of-the-art Immersion Theater that will use four-wall projection to fully engage audiences in historical and educational experiences; and a Global Studio that will enable programs to be broadcast nationally and internationally.

If completed on schedule, the Education Center is set to open in 2026, coinciding with the United States’ 250th birthday.

“Only 45 individuals have held the Office of the President of the United States,” Miller said. “Here in Abilene, we have one of those individuals. This new center will be our birthday gift to America.”

4-H Members Receive Special Awards at Kansas State Fair

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in August. This is unchanged from 3.8% in July and an increase from 3.7% in August 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas increased to 67.0% in August, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Geary County remained steady at 5.4 percent in August. The rate in Riley County is down from 4.1 percent in July to 3.9 percent in August. The rate is up in Wabaulsee County from 3.7 to 3.9 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 4,700 from July. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 1,300 over the month, while government decreased by 3,400. The largest job gains in the private sector were in&nbsp;leisure and hospitality&nbsp;(+600 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation, and utilities&nbsp;(-2,100 jobs).

Jobless rate remains steady in Geary County

For more than 70 years, AAA's ‘Your Driving Costs’ analysis has offered valuable insights into vehicle ownership expenses. This year’s analysis shows that the total cost of owning and operating a new vehicle is $964.78 per month, or $11,577 annually, a $719 decline from 2024.

Factors contributing to this decline include depreciation, lower finance charges, reduced fuel prices, and a shift towards more affordable vehicle options. AAA advises potential buyers to consider these costs to choose the best vehicle type and model for their budget.

"It might be tempting to rush to the dealer for a new car when you notice a drop in ownership costs this year," said Greg Brannon, AAA's director of automotive research. "However, consumers should factor in all the expenses involved before making any commitments."

Depreciation, which is the difference between a car's purchase price and its resale value, is the most significant cost of vehicle ownership. This year, depreciation has decreased, with vehicles+9 in the YDC study losing an average of $4,334 in value per year compared to $4,680 annually in 2024.

Categories driving lower costs this year include:

Finance Charges - Estimated finance costs have decreased to $1,131 in 2025, down 15 percent compared to $1,332 in 2024. *Please note: Sticker price decrease is partially due to new vehicles in YDC.

Fuel Prices - The average fuel cost dropped to 13.00 cents per mile, a 12.8% decrease from last year, while regular grade gasoline for YDC vehicles averaged $3.151 per gallon, down from $3.539. Meanwhile, electricity prices for charging electric vehicles rose slightly to 16.7 cents per kilowatt hour, up from 15.9 cents in 2024.

Choosing the vehicle that suits your needs is important, as it can lead to significant savings over time. For example, while a pickup truck is ideal for heavy-duty hauling and towing, it comes at a steep cost, averaging an additional $6,402 per year compared to a small sedan, which operates at just 55.87 cents per mile—43.3 percent less than a pickup. This comparison highlights the importance of selecting a vehicle based on actual transportation needs.

Similarly, according to this year’s AAA EV survey, consumers are increasingly drawn to electric vehicles (EVs) for their gas savings and lower maintenance costs, with EVs having the second-lowest maintenance expenses among all vehicle categories. Hybrid options are also appealing, offering the lowest maintenance fees while sharing similar lower fuel cost benefits, even considering the national average electricity price of 16.7 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Ultimately, whether opting for a pickup, a small sedan, or an EV, weighing these factors carefully to make a well-budgeted decision can lead to ownership savings.

Comparison of EV and Hybrid Ownership Costs to Gas-Powered

The primary factor affecting the cost differences between electric vehicles (EVs) and gas vehicles this year is fuel prices. While EVs remain more expensive in "ownership costs" (depreciation, insurance, fees, and financing), they have lower "operating costs," particularly in fuel and maintenance. Consequently, EVs are now more expensive overall across all vehicle categories in this study.

AAA continues to expand YDC by comparing top-selling EV and Hybrid models in four popular vehicle categories - medium sedan, compact SUV, medium SUV, and pickup truck. Over the years, automakers have expanded their lineups to include more appealing categories and popular models. Now, with this bonus analysis, consumers have a snapshot of ownership costs for select EV and Hybrid models compared to their gas-powered counterparts.

The use of standardized criteria ensures that AAA estimates are consistent when comparing the driving costs of different vehicle types. Actual driving costs will vary based on driving habits, location, operating conditions and other factors.

AAA selects top-selling, mid-priced models and compares them across six categories: fuel, maintenance/repair/tire costs, insurance, license/registration/taxes, depreciation, and finance charges. The study assumes a five-year ownership period, with the vehicle being driven 15,000 miles/annually (or a total of 75,000 miles).

AAA evaluated four categories of EVs and Hybrids – consisting of 11 total models – compared them across six cost categories: fuel, maintenance/repair/tire costs, insurance, license/registration/taxes, depreciation, and finance charges. Due to a limited number of models with significant sales available in many vehicle categories, only four vehicle categories were selected (medium sedans, compact and medium SUVs, and pickup trucks) for analysis and comparison to those corresponding ICE categories. Annual new vehicle ownership costs drop to $11,577

The number three team in Class 6A, the Wichita Northwest Grizzlies, held on to defeat Junction City 31–21 on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium.

The first half was a defensive battle, with both teams scoring a touchdown in the first quarter before heading into halftime tied at 7–7. Wichita Northwest struck first on a 38-yard touchdown run by senior running back Augie Fast. The Blue Jays answered with a 7-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Aaron Woods.

The third quarter was similar to the first half. Junction City was unable to convert on the opening possession, and after Wichita Northwest muffed a punt, the Blue Jays again failed to capitalize, going three-and-out for the second time. Following a series of back-and-forth possessions, Wichita Northwest regained the lead, 10–7, on a 22-yard field goal.

As they did earlier, the Blue Jays responded with a scoring drive of their own. Senior quarterback Conrad Gomez connected with senior wide receiver Lovell Autry on a 16-yard touchdown pass, putting Junction City ahead 14–10 with 11:55 left in the game.

Northwest answered quickly with an 8-yard touchdown run by freshman Zy’air Burton. After the Blue Jays failed to move the ball on the ensuing possession and were forced to punt, the defense came up big. On the first play of the Grizzlies’ drive, Junction City forced a fumble, which senior J’Sean Green recovered (his second fumble recovery of the night.) Just two plays later, Gomez found tight end Ayden Martin for a 23-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Jays a 21–17 lead with under five minutes remaining.

But Wichita Northwest’s senior linebacker-turned-running back, John Michael Fountain, proved unstoppable down the stretch. He broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run to put the Grizzlies back in front. After Junction City went three-and-out, Fountain struck again, racing 57 yards for another touchdown to make it 31–21 and seal the win.

“Our guys played their tails off,” said Junction City head coach Randall Zimmerman. Speaking about Wichita Northwest, Zimmerman added, “That’s a very good football team.” He noted that his team had opportunities to win and played well enough to do so, but he was proud of their effort. “I am really proud of our kids, and they really laid it on the line tonight,” Zimmerman said. “This was two really good teams that played hard. We’ve got to have a good week of preparation, because our schedule is very tough with games against Manhattan and Hays coming up.”

With the loss, Junction City falls to 2–1 on the season, while Wichita Northwest improves to 3–0.
