Geary County Commissioner Trish Giordano wants a one percent increase in the transient guest tax. "I think it would be beneficial for our community." The current TGT rate is six percent, which is below the 7.5% rate in Manahttan and nearly eight percent in Abilene.

Giordano and other members of the governing body along with the public weighed in on the issue during a discussion Monday evening at the County Office Building. Transient guest tax is paid by the people who use lodging facilities. Much of the revenue supports Convention and Visitors Bureau operations but one percent is targeted for any possible future sports complex project.

&nbsp;No final action was taken but Giordano confirmed that the topic will be brought back up during the commission meeting on June 30.

Giordano started the conversation by suggesting using the sports complex funds be used to help impact existing sports facilities such as the 4-H softball field and the rodeo arena. "We need to look at local stuff because a huge sports complex is not coming any time soon." The amount of money currently in the sports complex account totals approximately $816, 700.

Commissioner Kathy Tremont noted that she was all for improving quality of life. " She favors having a work session with oher entities prior to the June 30th commission meeting, "So that we could all come together and make a good decision for everybody in our community as to how we want to spend this money and what to do with it." The other entities could include the City, USD 475, Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and EDC.

County Chairman Keith Ascher thinks the topic requires more discussion. "Get more specifics, get a plan. I agree that we need to talk to different entities." Ascher favors doing a feasibility study before anything is done on this issue.&nbsp;

Members of the CVB staff and Advisory Committee expressed some opposition and concern ranging from the CVb should have more input on how the one percent is spent, to people traveling to a destination do not look at the transient guest tax cost.

A boundary should become the focus for afternoon storm development (generally south of I-70) in the mid-late afternoon. If these storms form, very large hail, damaging wind gusts, and a few tornadoes are possible.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a robbery in Manhattan and have made an arrest.

Just 8a.m. Monday, police arrested 17-year-old Rostyn Rothwell,of Hallsville, Texas on requested charges of&nbsp; aggravated robbery, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;This arrest is in connection to a report filed for aggravated robbery in the 1500 block of Pipher Lane in Manhattan that occurred April 11.

Rothwell is being held without bond in the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center at the time of this report.

This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest moved into southern Kansas about a week ago, but since then it has been slow going. With scattered showers and high humidity, most days the combines can’t get rolling until late-afternoon. There are reports that farmers have gotten into dry fields along the I-135 corridor, as far north as Mitchell County.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is only 3 percent complete, well behind 25 percent complete last year and behind 11 percent on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 15, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 21 percent poor to very poor, 30 percent fair and 49 percent good to excellent.

Chris Stevens, General Manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association in Conway Springs, reports that harvest began last Monday, June 9, but it has been hit or miss. They’ve only taken in about 10% of the bushels they expect, but should be halfway complete by now. So far, it’s too early and too spotty to tell how test weights are going to average, but they’ve heard yield reports from 26 to 50 bushels per acre, which would be an average crop. He mentioned that some of the later maturing varieties had the advantage this year because of the rains. The area doesn’t have any disease pressure so far this year. Stevens is hoping that forecasted showers dodge them and it gets hot and dry for harvest this weekend.

However, the National Weather Service in Wichita is forecasting thunderstorms across the harvest area Tuesday afternoon. Winds up to 80 mph, hail up to tennis ball size and heavy rainfall are all possible.

Chris Fryer, Grain Merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance LLC in Cheney, says they’ve only taken in about 5% to date, even though harvest started last Tuesday, June 10. They would normally be about a third done by now, but rains have kept harvest from progressing. The quality has been very good so far, and yields are better than last year.

The Junction City Fire Department would like to remind you that the city has changed the ordinance regarding sale and discharge of fireworks. The change was made to mirror surrounding communities and to simplify the times.

Fire Chief Jason Lankas said that except as otherwise provided in this ordinance, it is unlawful for any person or entity to sell, store, or discharge fireworks within the city limits of Junction City. Term "fireworks" as used in the Code of Ordinances of the City shall have the definition set forth in the regulations of the Fire Marshal of the State of Kansas.

Junction City, KS – The Geary County Childcare Coalition (GC3C) is excited to announce receipt of the Child Care Zones grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), through its Child Care Matters initiative and in collaboration with All In For Kansas Kids.

KDHE initiated the Child Care Zones program in early 2025 to support communities working to address local child care issues. A Child Care Zone is a self-defined geographic area (of at least two counties) that receives state-level support to address community-specific child care challenges. 

The proposal submitted by GC3C for the zone of Geary and Dickinson County includes four initiatives to be instituted over the next 2 and a half years. 

The Extended Hours Pilot Program will provide funding to selected providers to expand their facilities and staff to care for children for extended day and nighttime hours. Selection will be based on an application process that will be open for all licensed Geary and Dickinson County providers this summer. 

The Employer-Sponsored Childcare Cooperative will help businesses secure existing childcare slots for their employees. These slots will be funded with partial grant money, matched by employers and will be prioritized for industries and businesses with high turnover due to child care challenges. 

The Universal Pre-K Curriculum Alignment will provide the opportunity for three and four-year-olds in participating child care centers and home-based settings to receive a standardized curriculum aligned with local school districts' early childhood education programs. Participating providers will receive training, curriculum materials, and ongoing support to implement high-quality early learning experiences that prepare children for kindergarten. 

The Apprenticeship and Scholarship Program will address child care workforce shortages by providing scholarships and apprenticeship opportunities for individuals pursuing a career in early childhood education.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend arrest in Manhattan.

Just before 5p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for battery, criminal threat and disorderly conduct at Manhattan Town Center in Manhattan.

 A 26-year-old man was listed as the victim and a 45-year-old man was listed as the suspect when it was reported the suspect battered the victim and then threatened to harm him. 

Jimmy Ward, 45, of Junction City, was arrested on requested charges of battery and criminal threat. Ward met the requirement of $5,000 bond and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.

The Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel (KARSP) held their 73rd Annual Convention at the Sonesta Essential in Junction City June 11-13. Gil Bunning, President of KARSP presided. Ninety-one attendees from various units across Kansas heard speakers, musicians, met new friends, renewed previous relationships and enjoyed good food and hospitality at Sonesta Essential. The theme during the convention was “Life: It’s the Heart of the Matter!”

Karen Pulaski, Convention Chair and a Past President of the organization from Sedgwick, Kansas, coordinated the three-day event. The Junction City High School JROTC presented the colors on Thursday, June 12.

Jill Haukos, Director of Education at the Konza Biological Station, presented information about the beauty and importance of the Konza Prairie. Bill Nelson, STEM educational consultant, shared humorous slides and reflections about not taking life too seriously. He also stated that “young people today need us to share our life’s lessons now more than ever. They need to know about our values and things most important to us, like helping each other through the tough times, being kind, being dedicated and committed to the people we care about.” Virleen Carlson, from Junction City, portrayed Mamie Eisenhower and answered questions about her life with “Ike”.

Sixteen $500.00 grants were awarded to teachers to purchase items to use with students in their classrooms. The KARSP Foundation raises money to provide the grants through the annual auction at the convention and donations from individuals.

On the final day of the convention a Memorial Service was held in remembrance of educators across Kansas who were lost this past year, but not forgotten. The Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, through its activities and publications, enhances the quality of life for all current and retired school personnel.

Those who attended the convention from the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel were Margaret Kilpatrick, Pat Foster, Anita Rogge, Nita and Ferrell Miller.

The KARSP Foundation raises money to provide the grants through the annual auction at the convention and donations from individuals.On the final day of the convention a Memorial Service was held in remembrance of educators across Kansas who were lost this past year, but not forgotten. The Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, through its activities and publications, enhances the quality of life for all current and retired school personnel.Those who attended the convention from the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel were Margaret Kilpatrick, Pat Foster, Anita Rogge, Nita and Ferrell Miller.

The Geary County Sheriff's Office reports that on Saturday night Deputies responded to the 6500 block of W. Lyons Creek Road for a single vehicle accident. Margarito Silva Jr. of Topeka, KS was traveling westbound in a 2013 Chevrolet Impala when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a telephone pole. Silva was transported to Stormont Vail of the Flint Hills to be evaluated for minor injuries. The vehicle was removed by private tow.

Single vehicle accident occurs in Geary County

Two delegates from the 2025 session of the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a> have been elected by their peers to represent Kansas Boys State as senators at <a href="https://www.legion.org/boysnation/">Boys Nation</a> this summer. The announcement was made this morning during an assembly at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Tristan Jenkins, a resident of Olathe, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Olathe South High School, and Garrett Li, a resident of Overland Park, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Olathe North High School will attend Boys Nation, Friday, July 18 through Saturday, July 26, at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Earlier in the week Li was elected as the Kansas Boys State governor

Jared Tucker, a resident of Fall River, Kan., and a senior-to-be at West Elk High School in Howard, Kan., and Louis McVey, a resident of Otis, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Otis-Bison High School, were elected as the first alternate and second alternate, respectively.

At Boys Nation, Jenkins and Li will join representatives from each of the 49 Boys State programs across the country (Hawaii does not have a Boys State program) to receive an education on the structure and function of federal government. At the event, each delegate acts as a senator from his Boys State. The young lawmakers caucus at the beginning of the session, then organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. Senators also learn the proper method of handling bills, according to U.S. Senate rules.

Participation in the political process is emphasized throughout the week, including organization of party conventions, and nominating and electing a president and vice president. The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states.


High school students from across the State of Kansas are participating in the 2025 session of the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a>, which started on June 1 and ends tomorrow (Saturday, June 7), at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This is the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall. The Kansas Boys State program includes students who have just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall).

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

GEARY COUNTY—Four people were injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Sunday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Chevy Colorado driven by Tamara L.&nbsp;Kemp, 20, Kalamazoo, Michigan, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Humboldt Creek Road.

The driver fell asleep. The pickup struck the guardrail and rolled. The pickup was pulling a trailer. It detached and came to rest in the median.

EMS transported Kemp and passengers Christine T.&nbsp; Hoadley, 59, Galesburg, Michigan, an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old boy to Stormont Vail hospital-Flint Hills. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

With harvest season just around the corner, local authorities and agricultural officials are reminding motorists to stay alert and cautious when encountering slow-moving farm equipment on rural roads.

As farmers across Kansas gear up for one of the busiest times of year, rural roadways will see an increased presence of large machinery and trucks. These vehicles, which often travel at speeds of 25 mph or less, can pose safety challenges for unsuspecting drivers.

Harvest season is a critical time for our agricultural communities. It’s also a time when there are more accidents involving farm equipment, most of which are preventable with a little extra caution.

Here are safety tips to help prevent accidents:

The current TGT rate in Geary County is six percent, which is lower than in Manhattan and Abilene. The majority of the funds are used to support Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau operations, and one percent is allotted for a sport complex project if one ever occurs.

The county commission will begin holding night meetings once per month, beginning with the session Monday night.

RILEY COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the cause a fire at Walmart.

Just before 5p.m. on Friday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire reported at Walmart,&nbsp;  101 Bluemont Avenue, according to a media relase.

 Upon arrival, crews found people evacuating and light smoke showing at the doors. Employees were extinguishing the fire as crews arrived at the middle of the store where the fire occurred.&nbsp;

Crews ensured that extinguishment was complete by overhauling the area and taking smoldering material outside. 

Just before 7p.m., Walmart was still closed while fire crews evacuate smoke from inside the building.No injuries were reported. The fire loss is not yet available, but it is expected to be considerable due to smoke damage throughout the building.&nbsp; 

.Riley County Police Department, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, and Pottawatomie County EMS responded to assist.

Those six will then advance to the general election in November.
