RILEY COUNTY —Preliminary data shows that Manhattan, Kansas had the highest temperature on Saturday across the contiguous United States at 115 degrees, according to the National Weather Service

After Saturday's extreme heat, expect more of the same through at least Wednesday with heat indices of 105-115 degrees each day, according to the National Weather Service.

 Sunday heat indices could reach 120 degrees in some spots. Take extra precautions and avoid being outdoors in the afternoon if possible.

Manhattan sizzles: Highest temperature in U.S. on Saturday

Junction City Blue Jay football players competed Saturday at Blue Jay Stadium. Coach Randall Zimmerman came away pleased with&nbsp; the effort. "We had a good week and a lot of that showed up."

Zimmerman praised the execution on offense and defense. We saw some really good things. We've got a great group of kids. We love the potential of this group. " The coach confirmed that the athleticism of this group is good. One stat that pleased him involved the lack of any turnovers.

The Blue Jays will compete in a Jamboree Friday night with Shawnee Heights and Washburn Rural at Shawnee Heights.&nbsp;

Also on Saturday players from Junction City and fort Riley Middle Schools competed in their own practice, and youth in grades K-6 had a session as well.

Blue Jays go with their first public scrimmage

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.7% in July. This is a decrease from 2.8% in June and unchanged from 2.7% in July 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,000 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,500 over the month, while government increased by 500.

The jobless rate in Geary County is down from 4.2 percent in June to 4.1 percent in July.&nbsp; Pottawatomie and Riley County is also down from June. However, Wabaunsee County is up a tick from 2.8 percent in June to 2.9 percent in July.&nbsp;

“Average nominal hourly earnings in the private sector increased 3.2% over the year in July, faster than the rate of inflation in the Midwest,” said labor economist, Nathan Kessler. “The result was a small over the year increase in real hourly earnings as the Kansas labor market remains strong and inflation continues to moderate.”

Since July 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 23,100. This change is due to an increase of 18,700 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,400 government jobs.

Geary County youth fundraiser golf scramble

Fort Riley announced that roadwork is scheduled to begin on Monday. The construction is on three bridges across the installation.&nbsp;

The bridges are: the Henry Drive bridges over the Kansas River and railroad tracks, as well as the Huebner bridge over Three Mile Creek.&nbsp;

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane and controlled by either flagmen or stop lights. 

Williston Point will be closed to all traffic north of the roundabout at Huebner.&nbsp; Delays should be expected.&nbsp;

Just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 1800 block of Anderson Ave. in Manhattan.

&nbsp;A 21-year-old man&nbsp; reported his Stag Arms AR15 was stolen from his home while it was unoccupied.

K-State received 15 Top 10 rankings and two Top 15 rankings in the latest national survey by The Princeton Review, "<a href="https://www.princetonreview.com/college-rankings?rankings=best-389-colleges" target="_blank">The Best 389 Colleges: 2024 edition</a>." The survey asked students&nbsp;to rate their colleges on dozens of topics, including&nbsp;academics, amenities, school services, campus culture and extracurriculars. The top 25 schools are included in each category. According to this year's rankings, K-State is No. 1 in the nation for friendliest students&nbsp;and town-gown relations are great; No. 2 for happiest students; No. 4 for best quality of life; No. 5 for best student support and counseling services and best athletic facilities; No. 6 for their students love these colleges and best health services; No. 8 for best college dorms; and No. 9 for best career services, best campus food and college city gets high marks. K-State is also No. 15 for most active student government. With the assistance of a $136,365 contribution from the Cooper-Newell Foundation, patrons of the Wakefield Museum have reached their fundraising goal of $535,000 for a new addition to the museum. Groundbreaking will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at 604th Street in Wakefield.

The museum was a dream of Annetta ( Myers ) Hayes, who belonged to the Wakefield Library Club. Other founders of the museum included Evelyn Hawes, Gertrude Marshall, Dee Lumb, Betty Herman, Thelma Brougher and Marion Mason. The first wing opened in 1973, the Burner Addition in 1980 and the Rau Addition in 1990.

According to Museum Board member Trudy Zurmely,&nbsp; during  the last 20 years the museum has received so many historical items that they are out of room to display them.

Members of the Expansion Committee include Trudy Zurmely, Michael Zurmely, Kathy Yarrow, Kathy Tremont, Marilyn Sherbert, Joy Shandy, Jolene Hammond and Sharon Babst.

MANHATTAN — At today's annual Kansas Governor's Summit on Agricultural Growth hosted by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas State University announced the creation of the new Barry Flinchbaugh Center for Ag Policy. The center honors and continues the work of Barry Flinchbaugh, who served Kansas State University, the State of Kansas and the nation as a policy educator for nearly half a century. Flinchbaugh was known for his teaching and practice of the Alternatives and Consequences policy education model to help policymakers address opportunities and challenges facing agricultural producers. "As a former ag dean, I have been a longtime admirer of Barry Flinchbaugh — his legacy in the ag world is amazing," said Richard Linton, K-State president. "The Barry Flinchbaugh Center for Ag Policy will allow K-State to showcase our continued commitment to farmers and ranchers across the state who are searching for effective solutions to agricultural challenges through respectful compromise." The center, a free-standing organization that works in partnership with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/engagement/" target="_blank">K-State Office of Engagement</a>, will focus on student engagement through lectures, research opportunities, internships and more. Also core to the center's mission is working with stakeholders in agriculture and their supply chains to identify innovative solutions to current and future challenges facing agriculture and rural communities. "By nurturing leaders to understand the role of agriculture in national security and providing vital information to agriculture's stakeholders, the center will effectively carry on Barry's legacy and advance our agricultural communities and industries," Linton added. The creation of the center has been led by several of Flinchbaugh's former students, a group known as the Flinchbaugh Legacy Keepers. "Barry Flinchbaugh's former students are one of his greatest legacies, and as such, we felt it critical to find multiple ways to keep his legacy active at Kansas State University and beyond," said Jay Armstrong, Flinchbaugh Legacy Keepers' liaison to the university. WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice and Department of Education&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/ocr-questionsandanswers-tvi-20230814.pdf?utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_name=&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=">jointly released guidance&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;this week to colleges and universities about how to consider race in admissions decisions, following the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://tennesseelookout.com/2023/06/29/us-supreme-court-strikes-down-use-of-affirmative-action-in-college-admissions/">Supreme Court’s summer decision</a>&nbsp;that struck down affirmative action in higher education.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, on a call with reporters, said higher education institutions can continue to participate in targeted outreach programs in underserved communities as a way to recruit students from a diverse background.

“Remember, nothing in the court’s decision denied the value of diversity in education,” he said.

Cardona said in the coming weeks, the agency will issue a report that outlines comprehensive strategies for colleges and universities to “lawfully cultivate diverse applicant pools and achieve (a) diverse student body.”

“These resources provide some clarity about the admissions practices for achieving racial diversity that remain lawful,” Cardona said.

On June 29, in a 6-3 decision, the conservative bloc of the Supreme Court ruled that the admissions processes at Harvard University and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ncnewsline.com/2023/06/29/unc-leaders-faculty-and-political-leaders-react-to-u-s-supreme-court-decision-on-admissions/">the University of North Carolina</a>&nbsp;violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment because those institutions considered race in acceptances.

The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/letters/colleague-20230814.pdf?utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_name=&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=">guidance</a>&nbsp;acknowledges that following the Supreme Court’s decision,&nbsp; higher institutions may have to redouble “efforts to recruit and retain talented students from underserved communities, including those with large numbers of students of color.” Some of those efforts might also include a “greater focus on fostering a sense of belonging for students currently enrolled,” according to the guidance.

Colleges and universities can also partner with school districts in underserved communities by “supporting improved access to high quality advanced courses, and investing time and resources into programs that identify and nurture students’ potential.” By doing so, “colleges and universities can ensure that more students will be prepared to apply to colleges and universities, gain admission, succeed, and graduate,” the department said.

Associate Attorney General of the United States Vanita Gupta said on the call with reporters that the Supreme Court’s decision “should not be used as an excuse to turn away from long-standing efforts to make those institutions more inclusive.”

“On the top line issue of considering race and admissions, colleges and universities can and should continue to ensure that their doors are open to those students of all backgrounds, including students of color, who possess the characteristics necessary to succeed and contribute on college campuses and in the world,” Gupta said.

The guidance clarifies that the court’s decision does not prevent higher education institutions from reviewing data on race and ethnicity, but that “institutions should ensure that the racial demographics of the applicant pool do not influence admissions decisions.”

The top Democrat on the U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee, Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia, said in a statement that Monday’s guidance “can serve as a resource to help colleges and universities understand the Court’s decision as they commit to pursue diverse campuses.”

He added that the Department of Education should also investigate “how race unjustly permeates many other policies and practices in our educational system.”

“This is important because race-conscious admissions policies were able to provide a counterbalance to factors — such as inequitable K-12 schools, racially biased admissions tests, and developmental and legacy admissions — that have discriminatory impact against students of color,” he said.

Biden administration provides guidance on diversity in college admissions 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities reported they have recovered a stolen trailer.

Just before 8p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for possession of stolen property and criminal damage to property in the 400 block of N. Main Street in Riley, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 46-year-old Clay Center reported his trailer was stolen stolen.

It was in the possession of 35-year-old and a 54-year-old man at the Short Stop gas station in Riley. 

The trailer's fender, tail lights, wire harness, and light plug also been damaged. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,500

Office of Governor Laura Kelly Governor Laura Kelly yesterday announced that an additional $1 million has been directed to Conservation Districts across Kansas to support practices that will reduce erosion, promote water conservation, and mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought. This is in addition to the $3.5 million distributed each year for similar conservation efforts.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This additional funding comes as the U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that the wheat harvest will be 122 million bushels short of Kansas’ 330-million-bushel average.&nbsp;

“The drought&nbsp;we have experienced&nbsp;has&nbsp;absolutely starved our wheat harvest at a time when Kansas farmers – and the world –&nbsp;cannot afford it,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“My administration will continue to make the necessary investments to protect the water resources that fuel our agriculture industry – the bedrock of our state’s economy.”&nbsp;

Funding is provided by the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Conservation (KDA–DOC) through an appropriation from the State Water Plan Fund. The program is administered by Conservation Districts across the state.&nbsp;

“The state continues to seek funding for conservation efforts that can maximize water resources and help make agricultural practices for farmers and ranchers more efficient and sustainable,”&nbsp;Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam said.&nbsp;

Landowners and producers with natural resource concerns on their property are encouraged to visit their local Conservation District office to discuss the possibility of receiving state financial assistance. The additional funding is available to landowners and producers interested in eligible water resource practices such as irrigation water management, nutrient management, planting cover crops, livestock water supplies, cross fencing, and abandoned well plugging.&nbsp;

Experts worry hoarding is on the rise in Kansas amid a lack of support for those who struggle with it, straining families and communities.

WICHITA, Kansas&nbsp;— Before Beck Bright-Samarzia gets down to work, she suits up: back brace, gloves, N-95 mask.

Inching through one of her clients’ living rooms, between stacks of boxes and bins, she explains she used to wear an industrial-grade mask here — before they got the dust under control.

“It might look like not a lot has happened,” she said, “but so much has happened.”

Through her Wichita business, Paper Shift ICT, Bright-Samarzia helps people deal with their stuff — mostly when there’s way too much of it.

People call her after a loved one dies and it’s too overwhelming to sort through their belongings alone. Others need help gaining control of their own possessions, often due to mental illness or physical limitations.

Jamie Park, who lives here, deals with chronic pain. The house, just south of downtown Wichita, has been in her family for generations — and for generations, she said, her family has struggled with hoarding.

“It’s kind of crazy growing up in this environment,” she said. “I couldn’t see the floor growing up.”

Park and her family are among thousands of Kansans who deal with hoarding. It’s a problem that’s frequently depicted in the media, but mental health experts say it’s often misunderstood. And they worry hoarding is on the rise in Kansas due to the state’s demographic makeup and a scarcity of support for those who struggle with it.

Park, now in her 20s and a caregiver for her aging parents, is trying to break her family’s history of hoarding. Bright-Samarzia recently helped her clear out the laundry room so she could reach the washing machine. She’d been going to laundromats for years.

“Oftentimes, hoarding is generational,” said Bright-Samarzia, a former therapist. “People pass it down to their kids and their kids and their kids. But somewhere down the line, someone says, ‘Enough.’”

Down in the basement — where Park will soon move with her kids — the duo start sifting through a half century’s worth of memories, relics and junk: Old pay stubs. Abandoned baby toys. Tangles of unidentified wires.

Park steers clear of the more sentimental stuff.

“People think, ‘I have a lot of photos; I’m going to start with that,’” Bright-Samarzia said. “But you’re going to get stuck on memory lane. The feelings are going to come up regardless, but go through photo albums and mementos last.”

More than a decade ago, Bright-Samarzia got a call from a man who would become her first client. He asked whether she could help him sort through about 20 bankers boxes full of unopened mail. It had been building up for years.

After six months of chipping away after work and on weekends, they got it under control.

“Then I put him on quarterly maintenance,” she said.

Earlier this year, Bright-Samarzia decided to quit her job at a mental health professional education company to focus on her decluttering business full time.

The work can be intense, both physically and emotionally. She said a lot of people are reluctant to ask for help because they’re in denial about how bad the situation has become — or ashamed they can’t handle it on their own.

Even if they acknowledge they need to pare down their belongings, the process can stir up complicated feelings.

“For some people, getting rid of things is like throwing away a part of themselves,” she said. “It’s the support of the emotional side that is an enormous component to this.”

At its core, hoarding is a difficulty parting with things. It often also involves compulsive collecting.

It’s not always extreme, but it can be. When it begins to significantly interfere with a person’s ability to live their life or use their home, mental health professionals might diagnose them with a hoarding disorder.

People of all ages and backgrounds struggle with hoarding, but Wichita therapist Nancy Trout said issues with clutter often begin to appear in childhood and worsen with age as mobility issues make it harder for people to do the physical work of clearing it out. Grief and trauma can trigger or exacerbate the issue.

“The stuff becomes kind of a protective nest,” said Trout, who runs a monthly support group for people who struggle with hoarding.

She said hoarding often exists alongside other mental health conditions like depression and anxiety, and the issues can feed on themselves.

“Anxiety and depression may have been part of why the problem started,” she said, “but the fact that the&nbsp;hoard is still there makes people more anxious and depressed.”

She thinks most portrayals of hoarding in popular media — including the reality TV show&nbsp;Hoarders, where teams go in and gut the homes of people with extreme hoarding problems — don’t focus enough on the complex mental health issues at work. The hoarding often returns, she said, if those aren’t addressed.

“If someone is still acquiring, it doesn’t matter how much stuff they get rid of,” she said. “They will refill the space.”

But it can be hard for hoarders to get the mental health support they need — especially in Kansas, which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/news/2022-10-17/kansas-ranks-last-mental-illness-treatment" target="_blank">ranks among the worst states in the country</a>&nbsp;on access to mental health care.

Experts worry the lack of access, coupled with a fast-aging population, could fuel a rise in hoarding in the coming decades.

Most estimates peg the prevalence of hoarding at around 2.5% of the general population, says Randy Frost, a professor emeritus of psychology at Smith College and longtime expert on the disorder. But among older adults, the prevalence is likely much higher.

“The behavior itself appears to start early in life,” Frost said. “But, most of the time, when we see someone with a clinically significant hoarding problem, they tend to be older.”

The number of Kansans 65 and older grew 30% between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cedbr.org/component/content/article/1884-economic-outlook-kansas-city-2023-may-revision-2?catid=120&amp;Itemid=238" target="_blank">New projections by Wichita State University</a>&nbsp;predict that age cohort will grow the fastest over the next 50 years — more than twice as fast as younger cohorts.

Research has also identified a link between hoarding and loneliness — which experts say can exacerbate older adults’ already elevated rates of social isolation. Frost says the disorder can drive a wedge between a hoarder and their family.

“As the person with hoarding gets older, their adult children have a great deal of difficulty trying to convince them to improve the state of their home,” he said.

At some point, family members might get so frustrated that they refuse to visit the hoarder’s home — or arguments might get so bitter that the hoarder stops allowing them to visit.

“Once that happens, the clutter tends to get worse,” Frost said.

Untreated hoarding among older adults can put more pressure on social services and create problems in the broader community. Out-of-control clutter makes it difficult — and dangerous — for first responders to reach people in distress. It can also create fire hazards.

“It’s the really severe hoarding situations that cause the most health and safety problems,” said Trout, the Wichita therapist. “They can also cause problems for the neighbors.”

She and other experts want to see Kansas invest more in addressing the unique problems older adults face in managing their homes, whether or not they have a clinically diagnosable disorder. And, they say, officials need to do more to ensure people of all ages can access mental health care to help treat problems before they become serious.

Others need help gaining control of their own possessions, often due to mental illness or physical limitations.Jamie Park, who lives here, deals with chronic pain. The house, just south of downtown Wichita, has been in her family for generations — and for generations, she said, her family has struggled with hoarding.“It’s kind of crazy growing up in this environment,” she said. “I couldn’t see the floor growing up.”Park and her family are among thousands of Kansans who deal with hoarding. It’s a problem that’s frequently depicted in the media, but mental health experts say it’s often misunderstood. And they worry hoarding is on the rise in Kansas due to the state’s demographic makeup and a scarcity of support for those who struggle with it.<h2>A generational problem</h2>Park, now in her 20s and a caregiver for her aging parents, is trying to break her family’s history of hoarding. Bright-Samarzia recently helped her clear out the laundry room so she could reach the washing machine. She’d been going to laundromats for years.“Oftentimes, hoarding is generational,” said Bright-Samarzia, a former therapist. “People pass it down to their kids and their kids and their kids. But somewhere down the line, someone says, ‘Enough.’”<figure>

Tangles of unidentified wires.Park steers clear of the more sentimental stuff.“People think, ‘I have a lot of photos; I’m going to start with that,’” Bright-Samarzia said. “But you’re going to get stuck on memory lane. The feelings are going to come up regardless, but go through photo albums and mementos last.”<h2>A budding business</h2>More than a decade ago, Bright-Samarzia got a call from a man who would become her first client. He asked whether she could help him sort through about 20 bankers boxes full of unopened mail. It had been building up for years.After six months of chipping away after work and on weekends, they got it under control.“Then I put him on quarterly maintenance,” she said.Earlier this year, Bright-Samarzia decided to quit her job at a mental health professional education company to focus on her decluttering business full time.The work can be intense, both physically and emotionally. She said a lot of people are reluctant to ask for help because they’re in denial about how bad the situation has become — or ashamed they can’t handle it on their own.Even if they acknowledge they need to pare down their belongings, the process can stir up complicated feelings.“For some people, getting rid of things is like throwing away a part of themselves,” she said. “It’s the support of the emotional side that is an enormous component to this.”<figure>

 </figure><h2>What is hoarding?</h2>At its core, hoarding is a difficulty parting with things. It often also involves compulsive collecting.It’s not always extreme, but it can be. When it begins to significantly interfere with a person’s ability to live their life or use their home, mental health professionals might diagnose them with a hoarding disorder.People of all ages and backgrounds struggle with hoarding, but Wichita therapist Nancy Trout said issues with clutter often begin to appear in childhood and worsen with age as mobility issues make it harder for people to do the physical work of clearing it out. Grief and trauma can trigger or exacerbate the issue.“The stuff becomes kind of a protective nest,” said Trout, who runs a monthly support group for people who struggle with hoarding.She said hoarding often exists alongside other mental health conditions like depression and anxiety, and the issues can feed on themselves.“Anxiety and depression may have been part of why the problem started,” she said, “but the fact that the&nbsp;hoard is still there makes people more anxious and depressed.”She thinks most portrayals of hoarding in popular media — including the reality TV show&nbsp;Hoarders, where teams go in and gut the homes of people with extreme hoarding problems — don’t focus enough on the complex mental health issues at work. The hoarding often returns, she said, if those aren’t addressed.“If someone is still acquiring, it doesn’t matter how much stuff they get rid of,” she said. “They will refill the space.”<h2>Aging population, lacking support</h2>But it can be hard for hoarders to get the mental health support they need — especially in Kansas, which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/news/2022-10-17/kansas-ranks-last-mental-illness-treatment" target="_blank">ranks among the worst states in the country</a>&nbsp;on access to mental health care.Experts worry the lack of access, coupled with a fast-aging population, could fuel a rise in hoarding in the coming decades.Most estimates peg the prevalence of hoarding at around 2.5% of the general population, says Randy Frost, a professor emeritus of psychology at Smith College and longtime expert on the disorder. SALINA —The third on-campus residence hall facility has officially opened and is ready to house students for this upcoming academic year at&nbsp;<a>Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus,&nbsp;</a>according to a media release from the school.

The campus hosted its official grand opening ceremony on Aug. 15 for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/housing/rooms/" target="_blank">Earhart Hall</a>, a new 104-bed residence hall, which will significantly add to K-State Salina's on-campus housing options for students. The new facility was constructed to meet the demand for rising enrollment at the campus after five consecutive years of enrollment growth, and it will be at full capacity for the upcoming school year. Earhart Hall, named after Kansas aviator Amelia Earhart, will feature modern amenities and safety features for its residents, including a full kitchen space, lounge and study room on each floor. This new facility will help K-State Salina foster shared experiences and promote inclusivity with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/housing/learning-community/" target="_blank">Living Learning Community</a>&nbsp;programs that connect students living in the residence hall to other students who have similar academic interests.

The first Living Learning Community will commence for the 2023-2024 school year with first-time freshman students in the professional pilot program living in Earhart Hall. The campus's student life department hopes to be able to expand the Living Learning Community program to other degree options in the coming years. "Earhart Hall significantly impacts the type of student life services that our campus offers," said Kyle Chamberlin, associate dean of academic success and student affairs at K-State Salina. "To be able to implement some new programs, including our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/housing/first-year-residency/" target="_blank">First-Year Residency Policy</a>, will bolster the experiences each student receives while living on campus and helps us grow a culture that allows our students to lead in making our campus an inclusive place for all." JUNCTION CITY - The country's top 8 college anglers will be launching from Milford Lake, September 29 - October 2nd for the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Lew's.

The anglers will be fishing for a spot in the 2024 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Toyota.

The&nbsp;2023 Bassmaster College Team of the Year&nbsp;—&nbsp;Easton Fothergill and Nick Dumke from the University of Montevallo automatically qualified to the College Classic and will compete against the Top 3 teams from the Strike King Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops in the individual, elimination-style tournament.

Also competing at Milford Lake are Hayden Marbut and Tucker Smith from Auburn University, Levi Mullins and Matthew Cummings from Bethel University and Brody Robison and Jack Alexander, also from the University of Montevallo.

For Tucker Smith, this is his second trip to the College Classic Bracket. He finished second by 3 ounces in 2021.

“The last time I was there, it really hurt my feelings,” Smith said of the narrow loss. “It will be good to be back and get another chance at it.”

Milford Lake is home to the Kansas state-record smallmouth, a 6-pound, 14-ounce fish caught in April 2010, and has hosted other Bassmaster tournaments, including the 2018 College Classic Bracket and the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional.

The first day of the tournament will have all eight anglers competing individually to determine their seeding based on weight of their bag.

Days two and three will be the first two elimination days of the tournament which will be broadcast on FS1 starting at 8:00am CT on Saturday and 7:00am on Sunday.

Top 8 college anglers headed to Milford for Bassmaster College Bracket

TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly on Tuesday announced that agricultural exports reached $5.46 billion in 2022, the highest export total in decades. The Kansas agriculture industry has grown significantly since Governor Kelly took office; in 2019, Kansas had $3.8 billion in exports.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Once again, the top ag export for Kansas was red meat, which made up $2.1 billion or 38.9% of all agriculture exports. Second were cereals (including corn, wheat, and sorghum), and third was oil seed (primarily soybeans), making up 24.5% and 12.5% of total agricultural exports, respectively.&nbsp;

“Once again, we are shattering records to grow our economy and strengthen our ag industry,”&nbsp;said Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;“But even with these record exports, we aren’t taking anything for granted – which is why Secretary Beam and I are building relationships with international trading partners to ensure Kansas farmers and ranchers can continue to feed the world.”&nbsp;

Mexico was Kansas’ largest ag importer with $2.17 billion in 2022, Japan was the second largest with $781 million, and Canada was third with $594 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam met today with his state and provincial agriculture counterparts from Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. as part of the annual Tri-National Accord in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to strengthen relationships with key trading partners.&nbsp; This annual event allows state agricultural leaders to discuss critical issues affecting trade between the three countries, including animal health, rural development, and agriculture technology.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>Office of the GovernorTOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly on Tuesday announced that agricultural exports reached $5.46 billion in 2022, the highest export total in decades. The Kansas agriculture industry has grown significantly since Governor Kelly took office; in 2019, Kansas had $3.8 billion in exports.&nbsp;&nbsp;Once again, the top ag export for Kansas was red meat, which made up $2.1 billion or 38.9% of all agriculture exports. Second were cereals (including corn, wheat, and sorghum), and third was oil seed (primarily soybeans), making up 24.5% and 12.5% of total agricultural exports, respectively.&nbsp;“Once again, we are shattering records to grow our economy and strengthen our ag industry,”&nbsp;said Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;“But even with these record exports, we aren’t taking anything for granted – which is why Secretary Beam and I are building relationships with international trading partners to ensure Kansas farmers and ranchers can continue to feed the world.”&nbsp;Mexico was Kansas’ largest ag importer with $2.17 billion in 2022, Japan was the second largest with $781 million, and Canada was third with $594 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam met today with his state and provincial agriculture counterparts from Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. as part of the annual Tri-National Accord in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to strengthen relationships with key trading partners.&nbsp; This annual event allows state agricultural leaders to discuss critical issues affecting trade between the three countries, including animal health, rural development, and agriculture technology.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Kansas is a national leader in agriculture, and the continued growth in agricultural exports shows the significance of the work being done throughout the Kansas ag industry to develop these international markets,”&nbsp;said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam.&nbsp;Participation in the Tri-National Accord continues KDA’s vision of achieving long-term, sustainable agricultural prosperity and statewide economic growth.
