There will be a potato bar to raise funds for United Way this Wednesday, Oct. 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. or while supplies last, in the basement of&nbsp; the Central National Bank Main Bank at 8th &amp; Washington in downtown Junction City. Enter through the northwest doors and proceed down the stairs.

The cost will be $8 for a potato with toppings. They can include chili, nacho cheese, shredded cheese, sour cream, chives, ham, butter, bacon and broccoli. The potatoes are being donated by Tyme Out Steakhouse.

All proceeds will benefit the Junction City - Geary County United Way.

Junction City police have&nbsp; announced that they will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday, October 28th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The public can&nbsp; bring unused or any expired prescriptions to Dillon’s at 618 W 6th St.

Match Day in Geary County will be Tuesday, Oct. 17. 

According to coordinator Calvin Pottberg, there will be $155,000 available in matching funds to be distributed among local organizations receiving donations from the public. The matching funds include $100,000 from the R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation, $25,000 from the Central Charities Foundation, $20,000 Crosby Family and $10,000 from the Hoover-Koken Foundation.

One year ago Match Day generated $358,500 in donations plus $155,000 in match money for a total of $513, 576. This year there will be 51 organizations participating in the event, the highest number yet. Pottberg said, "They found out this is a better return on their investment than bake sales and that type of thing."

There are three ways you can make a donation.&nbsp;

--You can donate at the Municipal Building from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

--Mail a donation form and check to PO Box 411. That will count as long as it is postmarked on or before Tuesday the 17rh.

--Go to matchday.com website and make a contribution online with a credit card. The website will be active for 24 hours on the 17th.

Each charity can only receive up to $15,000 matched.

Food Pantry kicks off a building campaign in Junction City

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged kidnapping and other crimes involving two juveniles.

&nbsp;just after 11:00 p.m. Friday, police responded to a call of two missing children including a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old .

Just after 2a.m. Saturday, as officers and detectives were actively trying to locate the children, Overland Park Police Officers called Topeka detectives to report they had located the children.

Officers took the children to Overland Park Police Department where they were reunited with their parents. 

Overland Park&nbsp; police also located 42-year-old Russell L. Allen Jr. 42, of Manhattan with the children.

Police transported Allen back to Topeka and interviewed him.&nbsp; As a result of the investigation, Allen was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Kidnapping; Inflict bodily harm or terrorize the victim, Battery,&nbsp; Physical contact in rude, insulting, angry manner, Aggravated intimidation of a witness/victim; witness/victim &lt;18 years of age, Aggravated endangering of a child: Reckless situation, Aggravated assault; With intent to commit any felony,&nbsp; Theft by threat; Value $1,500 to $25,000&nbsp;

Manhattan man accused of kidnapping, battery of 2 juveniles

TOPEKA, KAN. – A federal jury convicted a Kansas man of defrauding car dealerships, financial institutions, and title loan companies, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Montressa “Monty” Cunningham, 42, of Junction City was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud, seven counts of bank fraud, three counts of wire fraud, and five counts of money laundering.

Beginning about December 2018, Cunningham applied for loans to purchase vehicles from Kansas dealerships. He submitted applications to financial institutions using other people’s social security numbers, false residential addresses, and counterfeit pay stubs showing fabricated monthly incomes, places of employment, and lengths of employment. 

As a result, Cunningham received seven vehicle loans totaling approximately $264,000. As part of the scheme, once Cunningham received the titles, he altered the documents to remove the lien holder’s name and address. He used the altered titles to register the vehicles in either Kansas or Georgia to receive clear titles. Cunningham then either sold the vehicles for cash or used the clear titles as collateral for cash loans. 

Title loan companies and individuals who purchased the vehicles paid Cunningham approximately $85,010 in cash.

The U.S. Secret Service and the Kansas Department of Revenue, Office of Special Investigations are investigating the case.

Junction City man guilty of fraud scheme involving 7 vehicle loans

Junction City Parks &amp; Recreation director updated activity at Rolling Meadows Golf Course. This week at the course we received new golf carts AND we also got new card readers. We are now able to take tap to pay, Apple pay, and chip cards!

We had to cancel the Black Tie Tactical Tournament for this Saturday (10/14/2023) but hope that we can reschedule it in the Spring. With that being said, we are still expecting to host the Geary County Youth Fundraiser Tournament next Sunday (10/22/2023). There is still time to sign up for that tournament!!

New golf carts arrive at Rolling Meadows

In 1853 Fort Riley was established as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails. Meanwhile in 1855 or so. (depending on which story you read), a settlement was formed and in 1859 it was incorporated as Junction City. From that time, I assume there has been a strong connection between the two. Many know that I was raised in Western Kansas about 170 miles west of here. I have always known of the strong connection between this City and the Army installation. It is synonymous. We all know that we probably would not have a new High School or have the 17th highest enrollment numbers this school year of the 531-member high schools of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) without this relationship.

This past week, I along with Mayor Landes and City Commissioner Underhill, traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the Annual Meeting of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). We were joined by representatives of Geary County and USD 475. All 3 entities make this trip for the simple reason that “Fort Riley is important to our community”. I know that some may question this annual trip, but if there was another business that had such a great economic impact on our community, you would want us to do all we can to continue and strengthen this historic bond. Simply it is essential to continue to show everyone that Fort Riley is important to Junction City and that Junction City is important to Fort Riley.

I also know that some may say that Fort Riley will always exist and that we don’t need to be at events such as the AUSA annual event. However, there is an old adage that comes into play. “If you are not at the table, you will be eaten at the table.” Growing up in Kansas I have always felt it is important to have

Fort Riley located in the middle of the geographic 48 States, but I am not sure that is always the case when those who live near the other Army Installations in the country are battling for government dollars and what to see “Their” base grow and prosper as we do here.

For me, there was one key moment on this trip. During the opening Ceremony, the Secretary of the Army mentioned the positive impacts of 3 different basis. She not only mentioned Fort Riley once, but also a second time. Yes, that may sound simple, but we all want that in the mind of “Decision Makers” when they make future decisions.

During this trip, as we have in the past, we took time to visit the Offices of United States Senators Moran and Marshall and Representative Jake LaTurner. As you probably know, Junction City and Geary County were moved into the Second Congressional District in 2022 after being in the “Big First” for some years. We continue to grow that relationship with this office as we are still “new” to each other. We did not get to visit with the elected officials but had the chance to visit with their “key” staff members. Yes we do see them here in Kansas at times, but there is something important about stopping by “Their House”.

During these “Hill” visits we discuss the needs for the community in both how they strengthen our relationship with Fort Riley and in general. Remember when the largest employer on our region benefits, so do we. Our local group spoke about various issues such as Child Care to needs for Federal dollars for projects such as the improvement of the Bridge on North Washington Street that crosses the Republican River and leads to the Trooper Gate. This Bridge needs attention and it is not a “Small Ticket” item. This is a City owned bridge, so the funds either come from a mixture of grants and local funding, or just from local tax dollars. This means more tax dollars are needed or something else gets dropped to provide adequate funds. Though not “Set in Stone” yet, there is a great chance the City will apply for grant funds for this project in 2024. We are trying to get this project on the “Radar” now and will continue to do so. During 2 of these visits, this project was already known to these staffers.

No doubt, there are many issues in Washington right now. The recent removal of the Speaker of the House definitely leaves many to wonder what will happen. Who will the new Speaker be, or will there be a threat of a government shutdown in a bit more than a month? This can equate to funding for the Army and Fort Riley. There are a couple of projects already approved for Fort

Riley, but the funds have yet to be appropriated to make the projects become reality.

Yes, there was a social of the local AUSA Chapter where both present and former Fort Riley soldiers were in attendance. It is always good to here, that Fort Riley was important to them, and their families, and we often hear how they loved being at Fort Riley, in the Flint Hills Region, and in our community. That just don’t happen.

Yes, as I wrote in the first paragraph, there has been a long-term relationship between Fort Riley and Junction City. We can’t fall asleep on this one. No doubt as we wish to grow Junction City we need more diversification in our economy, but as the old Cowboy saying goes, “You Gotta Dance With the One who Brung You”.

Junction City Main Street, Live Well Geary County (LWGC), Geary County Food Pantry, and Wheels of Hope nonprofit organizations on Saturday celebrate special moments.

The day begins downtown at Junction City Main Street Market which is held each Saturday morning, from 8:30 AM -1:30 PM, across from the Fire Department at the intersection of 8th and Jefferson Streets.&nbsp;

Be ready for the unveiling of the 7th Junction City Main Street JC Statue unveiling with the theme of Geary County – Outdoors. The unveiling starts promptly at 9:00 AM, on 7th Street, midway between Washington and Jefferson Streets. .

While at the unveiling, you will be able to view Mural Mania. Local muralist, Mindy Allen, has recruited numerous local artists to begin “activating the alley” connecting Washington Street to Junction City Main Street Market. They will be painting multiple murals on the south side of the Spin Fitness Studio, JC Taekwondo, and JC GymTastics building and part of the north side of D’z Lounge building.

From there move one-half block west to the intersection of 7th and Jefferson Streets for the 9:15 AM official opening of the 7th Street Bike Boulevard. Live Well Geary County (LWGC), using funding from BCBSKS Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant and Kansas Department of Transportation, has partnered with the City of Junction City and Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization for the development of the new 7th Street Bike Boulevard. This pathway is a shared roadway with vehicles and is well-marked by new sharrows and signs.

There will be a busy Saturday downtown

UPDATE: Both Junction City Lady Jay tennis players were eliminated on day one of the class 6A state girls tennis tournament. 

Junior Julia Cho was defeated and eliminated in her first two matches of the day.&nbsp;

Freshman Hannah Micheel lost her opening match and then worked her way through the back side of the bracket, but was defeated one round shy of advancing to Saturday&nbsp;

Day two of the class 6A girls tennis tournament gets underway on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Blue Jay tennis courts.&nbsp;

All matches are at the Blue Jay Tennis Courts behind the Junction City Middle School. 

There are 72 players competing in the tournament, 24 single players and  24 doubles teams . 

Junction City has two players competing in the singles division, junior Julia Cho and freshman Hannah Micheel. Both girls will compete in several matches on Friday in hopes of advancing to Saturday, which would result in a top 12 finish on the year. 

The tournament runs all day on Friday, and continues with the top players advancing onto Saturday. There is no charge to attend the state tournament.&nbsp;

The Junction City Blue Jay football team defeated the Topeka High Trojans 47-0 on Friday night in Topeka at Hummer Sports Park. 

The Blue Jays were excellent on offense, scoring a touchdown on every offensive drive except the last drive, when time expired. The scoring got underway in the first quarter when senior quarterback Brock Bazan threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior Michael Boganowski.

 Junction City had five rushing touchdowns on the night. The touchdown scorers included Griffon Bohannon (who had two touchdowns), Cooper Bogenhagan and quarterback Brock Bazan both added one, and the final touchdown of the night was from sophomore running back Lance Norris on a 25-yard touchdown run.

The Blue Jays also had a defensive score on an interception returned for a touchdown by sophomore defensive back Lovell Autry.

Junction City Commissioners will hear a presentation by the Geary County Food Pantry Tuesday night on their planned new facility at the northwest Corner of 7th &amp; Clay Street.&nbsp;

The city commission meets at 7 p.m. at 701 North Jefferson.&nbsp;

The Geary County Food Pantry plans to build on land that has been purchased. Debbie Johns and Brad Carlton will make this presentation. Tonette Hammond, Director of the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter, Inc. will be present to discuss a grant&nbsp; application and the relationship with the City on this application. Previously the City worked with the Open Door on similar funding grants.

They Food Pantry will be requesting a City contribution of $100,000 and a waiver of building permit and inspection fee. Funding would be taken from the General Fund id approval is given.

&nbsp;Staff have noted that there is no doubt the Food Pantry is a viable asset in the Junction City Community and there is a demand for the service they provide. The issue that the City Commission has to decide is if this is a good use for City funds and will a precedent be set.&nbsp;

Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene has announced that Allison Thompson, M.D. has joined the medical staff of Heartland Health Care Clinic at Memorial Hospital and she started seeing patients on October 9.

Dr. Thompson is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Salina. In 2016, she was named Family Medicine Interest Group President. In 2017, she received Exemplary Physician Attributes. In 2018, she was recognized for both Outstanding Leadership in Student Teaching and Overcoming Adversity and, in 2019, she was again recognized for Overcoming Adversity along with the Rural Medicine Award.

Dr. Thompson completed her residency program at McLennan County Family Medicine Residency in Waco, Texas.&nbsp;

Women’s health is a special interest for her, but she is still very much a full-scope family medicine physician; seeing patients of all ages.&nbsp;

When asked what inspires her professionally, Dr. Thompson said, “While this is something that continues to evolve with time, the one thing that stays constant is that I am happiest when talking face-to-face with patients. RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft at a convenience store in Manhattan.

Just after 3p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1300 block of Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kwik Shop reported a known female suspect took books of lottery tickets, activated them and cashed out winning tickets. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.

The parade is scheduled Friday, Nov. 24th at 5:30 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce releases Christmas Parade details

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —The suspect in the September 15th shots-fired incident outside a Wyandotte High School football game, was arrested and charged Thursday afternoon, according to Kansas City, Kansas police.

The U. S. Marshals Service, with combined assistance from the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Police Department, Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and the public, tracked the suspect, a juvenile male, to Manhattan, Kansas where he was taken into custody without incident.

 He is a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.

The Wyandotte County District Attorney has charged the juvenile with attempted 2nd degree murder and shooting into an occupied building.

 He is currently being held in Riley County as he awaits extradition back to Wyandotte County. 

Just before 9:30p.m. Sept. 15, police responded to Wyandotte High School, 2500 Minnesota, after shots were fired during the football game, according to a media release from Kansas City, Kansas police.

At the scene, police learned that with one minute left in the game, two unknown suspects approached the entrance to the field from outside the stadium and began shooting toward a USD 500 police officer standing at the gate.

 </figure>WYANDOTTE COUNTY —The suspect in the September 15th shots-fired incident outside a Wyandotte High School football game, was arrested and charged Thursday afternoon, according to Kansas City, Kansas police.The U. S. Marshals Service, with combined assistance from the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Police Department, Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and the public, tracked the suspect, a juvenile male, to Manhattan, Kansas where he was taken into custody without incident. He is a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.The Wyandotte County District Attorney has charged the juvenile with attempted 2nd degree murder and shooting into an occupied building. He is currently being held in Riley County as he awaits extradition back to Wyandotte County. Just before 9:30p.m. Sept. 15, police responded to Wyandotte High School, 2500 Minnesota, after shots were fired during the football game, according to a media release from Kansas City, Kansas police.At the scene, police learned that with one minute left in the game, two unknown suspects approached the entrance to the field from outside the stadium and began shooting toward a USD 500 police officer standing at the gate.The officer returned fire until the suspect fled north to a vehicle and fled. Police have not reported anyone struck by gunfire.&nbsp;

Suspect in high school football game gunfire captured in Manhattan

RILEY COUNTY–&nbsp; Law enforcement authorities are investigating attempted ATM theft in Riley County and asking the public for help to ID suspects.

The suspects are wanted in connection to an attempted theft and criminal damage to property case at Union State Bank in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department.

On Thursday, October 12, around 3:15 AM, surveillance video shows a 2015 Ford F150 enter the drive through at the bank. Two males wearing dark clothes and dark masks exit the truck and attempt to break into the ATM. No money was taken, but damage to the ATM is estimated to be around $15,000.&nbsp;

Just after 4a.m. Thursday, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office said around 4:11 AM, they responded to the 5400 block of Blue River Road for a report of an arson involving a Pottawatomie County Road Department F150 truck believed to be the same truck from the attempted theft. The Sheriff’s Office said in a media release they believe the truck was stolen earlier this morning near Walker and Flush Road in rural St. George.&nbsp;&nbsp;
