Donna Swihart is the Manager at the 12th Street Community Center in Junction City. She has worked with the City of Junction City for the past 12 years. She believes that community involvement is important and stated “I have a job where I get paid to play.”

The 12th Street Community Center is located at 1002 W. 12th Street where there are rooms and gym space for rent and programs set up for all ages. Some of the free programs include Walk-4-Fitness from 7:00 AM until 9:00 AM Monday through Friday and Pickleball from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday through Friday and Tuesday evenings from 6 until 8:00 PM. Dona said “Pickleball is a paddle sport that is easy to learn and fun for all ages. All equipment is provided.”

Donna also said that “on the first, third and fourth Fridays of each month between 5 and 6:00 PM (or the food is gone), Breaking Bread of JC brings our community together by serving a great meal at no charge.”

There are Open Gym Hours Mondays through Fridays between 11 AM and 8:00 PM and on Saturdays from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM (subject to change for gym rentals). Momentum Volleyball Club offers free instructional volleyball for K-6th graders each Sunday through November 5th.

Youth programs include Safe Sitter Classes with sessions open to 6th through 8th graders November 10th and 11th. Mrs. Swihart told the Optimist Club members that “Safe Sitters classes are provided to students to learn skills in caring for children of different ages, safety, and behavior management as well as how to run their own babysitting business. Instruction includes infant and child choking rescue, and CPR. Two other classes are Art lessons and Mad Scientist Fun!”

Fitness Programs include Yoga, Sit and Be Fit, Zumba and use of the Fitness Center. All-Treats Day! will be October 26th from 6:00-7:30 PM after the Costume Parade downtown. For more information about these programs and facilities usage, please contact Dona Swihart at 785-238-7529.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club Guest Speaker is the 12th Street Community Manager

You can apply to serve on the new Junction City Metropolitan Planning Commission. City Manager Allen Dinkel reported that a list will be brought to the next city commission meeting to consider for the new MPC. To apply contact city hall including the city clerk or city manager.

Dinkel said there are a few applicants but more are needed.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a crash in Riley County have made an arrest.

The crash occurred just before 9:30p.m. Tuesday&nbsp;near the intersection of Green-Randolph Road and Tuttle Creek Boulevard in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 22-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were&nbsp; victims. Police arrested Faye Evans, 34, of Blue Rapids on requested charges of driving under the influence, and aggravated battery. Faye was issued a total bond of $17,000 and was confined at the time of this report.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police released no additional details early Wednesday.

RCPD: Riley County woman accused of DUI crash

Junction City Commissioners have approved a staff recommendation to amend the contract between the City and Junction City Police Officers Association for 2024. Instead of the original 4% increase for sergeants and below that was planned the commission agreed to an amendment calling for a 6% increase.

City Manager Allen Dinkel noted that falls in line with the amount budgeted this past summer. That's when the 2024 spending plan was prepared.

Donations&nbsp; postmarked Tuesday can also still be accepted until Friday. Local foundations will also provide matching funds bringing the overall total to be invested into the community to approximately $515,000.

Among organizations the top recipient of donations was the Junction City Family YMCA with $35,039.32. The Geary County Food Pantry received $29,390.93.

Greater Geary Community Foundation Match Day raises $369K

Junction City Commissioners have received a request for $100,ooo and a waiver of building permit fees totaling about $2,000 for a a proposed new Food Pantry building.

The demand for food is increasing in the community. A total of 1,351 people received from the Food Pantry in September, up from 880 last April. Food insecurity is a problem in the community caused by such challenges as reduction in SNAP benefits, inflation and food prices.

The Food Pantry has acquired property at 7th &amp; Clay for the new facility. The estimate on construction of the 48 x 80 foot building covering 5,840 square feet has been calculated&nbsp; at $500,000. It will include in addition to storage space a kitchen for cooking classes, adjacent parking and hopefully an outside community garden. The current facility consists of about 3,840 square feet.

Commissioners were informed that the funding request would be a one time ask. Mayor Pat Landes told Food Pantry representatives, "what you do every day is extremely important." The City will take the request under consideration.

Right now 14.1% of the community is food insecure and 31%of the food distribution goes to children.

Geary County Historical Society and Museums will host a Steam Saturday event from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the museum at 530 North Adams.

You can learn how static electricity gives you goosebumps, create your own Halloween mask, autumnize a local Geary County photograph, and decorate a trick-or-treat bag!

STEAM Saturday is free and open to the entire community, all ages welcome.

USD 475 Performing Arts will present the Fall Fiddles Orchestra Concert Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Junction City High School Auditorium. There will be performances by the orchestras from Junction City High School, Junction City Middle School and Fort Riley Middle School.

Health Department issues an alert

MANHATTAN, KS - In August, Kansas State University president Richard Linton shared news of his cancer diagnosis. On Monday he wrote a letter to share an update:

Last Friday, I completed my seven-week cancer treatment program and officially (and excitedly) packed up my remote office in Kansas City for the last time. Wildcats — I AM HOME! I cannot tell you how good it feels to be back in Manhattan.&nbsp;

I am beyond thankful for the incredible care provided by my medical team throughout my diagnosis, treatment and now, recovery. The photos I am sharing with you today were taken when I celebrated the completion of my chemotherapy and radiation treatments. As many of you likely know, there is a tradition to ring the bell on the last day of each of those treatments, and the cheers that filled that space when I did so filled my heart just as much. It was an incredible and momentous experience, and I like to think it felt the same for the medical professionals who pour their lives into that space every day as well.&nbsp;

Over the last two months, I have received tremendous support from my immediate family and the entire Wildcat community. Many of you shared well wishes and prayers from across the country that lifted me up and reinforced for me how special the K-State family truly is. Plainly stated, your encouragement made me fight harder against the cancer, and because of this experience, my appreciation for the K-State family has grown beyond what I ever thought possible. Your support made a huge difference during my treatment, and I know it will continue to do the same during my recovery.&nbsp;

During the upcoming weeks, I am planning to conduct much of my work from the Pres Res as I regain my strength. I'm excited to feel the energy of this campus surround me again in that space, and I know that I will steadily be able to be more and more visible across campus as time progresses.&nbsp;

I am truly blessed by the support I've received that has allowed me to continue to lead during this time. Your flexibility and belief in the great things we are doing have allowed us to continue to push this institution forward together. As I said when I announced my diagnosis in August, K-Staters face difficult situations and uncertainty head-on, fighting for the greatest outcome. I told you I would do that during this journey, and I believe I've made good on my promise.&nbsp;

I cannot tell you how good it feels to be back in Manhattan.&nbsp;I am beyond thankful for the incredible care provided by my medical team throughout my diagnosis, treatment and now, recovery. The photos I am sharing with you today were taken when I celebrated the completion of my chemotherapy and radiation treatments. As many of you likely know, there is a tradition to ring the bell on the last day of each of those treatments, and the cheers that filled that space when I did so filled my heart just as much. It was an incredible and momentous experience, and I like to think it felt the same for the medical professionals who pour their lives into that space every day as well.&nbsp;Over the last two months, I have received tremendous support from my immediate family and the entire Wildcat community. Many of you shared well wishes and prayers from across the country that lifted me up and reinforced for me how special the K-State family truly is. Plainly stated, your encouragement made me fight harder against the cancer, and because of this experience, my appreciation for the K-State family has grown beyond what I ever thought possible. Your support made a huge difference during my treatment, and I know it will continue to do the same during my recovery.&nbsp;During the upcoming weeks, I am planning to conduct much of my work from the Pres Res as I regain my strength. I'm excited to feel the energy of this campus surround me again in that space, and I know that I will steadily be able to be more and more visible across campus as time progresses.&nbsp;I am truly blessed by the support I've received that has allowed me to continue to lead during this time. Your flexibility and belief in the great things we are doing have allowed us to continue to push this institution forward together. Geary County Historical Society held a 1920s speakeasy themed murder mystery event on Saturday October 14th. 

Tickets had gone on sale in mid September and sold out quickly.&nbsp;Guests at the event helped solve the mystery of gangster “Al Spumoni’s” murder by examining evidence and interrogating suspects played by: Cindy Quinlan, Bill Powers, Amity Thompson, Susan Kamphaus, &nbsp;Jan Gray and Curtis Gray. 

The investigation was led by “Prohibition Agent Ogee Mann” played by Britain Stites.&nbsp;Guests were invited to dress in 1920s costumes and “best costume” was awarded to the Jenkins family.&nbsp;The event served as a fundraiser for the Historical Society and was sponsored by DEL Motors, Subway and Family Buffet.&nbsp;

Geary County Commissioners have a approved a new brand for the county. They voted 3-0 to approve one developed by a local committee working in conjunction with Mammoth Creative Company. 

The brand could be used by the county, CVB and possibly other entities such as Main Street. It will also be presented to the Junction City Commission for consideration.

Here is an example of a personalized Geary County logo.

Army retirees: They should be reminded of fond memories of their experience at Fort Riley and consider Geary County as a destination for retirement.

Young military families: If they have a choice about where to be stationed, Fort Riley should be top of mind.

Fall harvest is in full swing on our central Kansas farm.&nbsp;Despite the smattering of golden triangles fluttering in my yard, there’s still plenty of green leaves shimmering from the cottonwoods in my neighborhood. Normally by mid-October these giant trees have shed the majority of their leaves and the ones left have turned a pale yellow. Of course, aside from narrowly missing our first frost, there haven’t been too many days that have felt like fall recently. Soon enough though, the cottonwoods and other trees will turn color and drop their leaves. I’ll have to get out the rake to clean up the yard and dust off the ladder to unclog gutters. 

Despite its late appearance, fall is coming and so is the work it brings. This realization hit me recently because another fall tradition managed to sneak up on me: local elections. Somehow advance voting starts this week. It seems like the candidate filing deadline was just yesterday, but Election Day on Nov. 7 is almost here. I know these local contests that determine who will serve on school boards and fill city council seats don’t garner the attention of state and federal elections. Despite the lack of a spotlight, these races are more important to your daily life than any other elected position. Local officials decide what roads get built and fixed, how money is spent for schools, what types of buildings can be built (and where they can be built) and how to support local businesses and incentivize growth.

The reason most of these decisions are made at the local level is because you know your community better than anyone else. That’s why it’s vital need to pay attention to who is running and give your support to candidates who understand the challenges facing your community. Voting in any election is a crucial part of upholding your civic duty, but casting a ballot is the easy part. Your primary job is to identify the candidates who can best represent your beliefs. Sometimes it’s not difficult to find those candidates, while in some races you have to do your research.

 Either way, those who volunteer for these unpaid positions deserve our gratitude. They’re signing up for the thankless job of spending their evenings making decisions for the entire community, often with few people in the audience, which is why your civic duty doesn’t end on Election Day. You don’t have to attend every meeting, but if you run into a school board member at the grocery story or see your city commissioner in church every Sunday, it’s good to have a short talk with them about what’s happening in your community. It’s OK to voice your opinion on current events and politely point out areas where you may disagree. You may not change their mind after one talk, but it might help them better understand your point of view

Like raking leaves and cleaning gutters, there’s plenty of traditions to tend to as we enter the heart of fall. Be sure you add casting a ballot to the list sometime between now and Nov. 7. After all, regardless of who wins, they’ll surely be making decisions that affect you.

Just after 3:30a.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery in the 500 block of Stone Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 23-year-old man reported an unknown suspect took his black 12-Rifle Radical Firearm and accessories. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $979. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. The Advanced Robotics class at&nbsp; Junction City High School presented a program to the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel (at during a meeting at the Zion United Church of Christ in Junction City.&nbsp;

&nbsp;(JCHS). Mr. Glennrey Villamor, instructor, stated that “this class is part of a JCHS Career Pathway in the Science, Engineering and Technology Academy. Students build robots from scratch and in the process learn that things do not always work the way you want them to the first time. It takes time to problem solve and try to figure out how to get things to work the way you want them”, he said.

An example of problem solving occurred during the presentation, when a robot was supposed to dance to music. The computer which had the music to be played and the robot that was to do the dancing had difficulty communicating with each other. Cathy Hedge, retired educator, found the music needed on her cell phone, played it and the robot began to dance.

JCARSP members got to hear their President, Dr. Ferrell Miller, share about his experience growing up and learning to play the accordion. Several selections were performed for the group.

JCARSP membership is open to any retired or former licensed educator, classified, employee, custodial or maintenance employee. The group meets five times a year for a meal, programs, entertainment and gives back to the community through projects. This month’s project was to provide monetary or non-perishable food items for the Geary County Food Pantry/Wheels of Hope.

The next meeting will be December 8 at noon in the Zion United Church of Christ. Dr. Beth Hudson will share information about her visit to the Holy Land, JCHS Singers will share seasonal music and the JCARSP members will sing carols. The project for December will be to give caps, socks, and gloves to the Early Childhood Center.

Retired School Personnel Learn About Robotics At JCHS

Junction City High School hosted the Girls 6A State Tennis Tournament last Friday and Saturday at the Blue Jay Tennis Complex. 

 The tournament featured the top players throughout the state of Kansas and included two Lady Jay singles tennis players, Julia Cho and Hannah Micheel.  For both players, this was the first time they earned their way into the tournament. 

 Julia Cho, a junior, began play against a regional champion from the West region and lost her opening round in straight sets.  In the consolation bracket, she lost the next round 8-4 to a Garden City opponent, which eliminated her from the tournament. 

 Freshman, Hannah Micheel, opened up her tournament play with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Shawnee Mill Valley.  She lost the next round against the #4 seed in the tournament from Shawnee Mission East, which put her in the consolation bracket.  She moved on further in the bracket when her opponent from Washburn Rural had an injury default.  However, the regional champion from Wichita Northwest defeated her 8-3 in the next round, ending Micheel’s run in the tournament.  Micheel finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. 

 The singles champion was Sarah Yan from Blue Valley West and the doubles team of Long/Schmidt from Shawnee Mission East won the doubles bracket.  Shawnee Mission East won the team title followed by Blue Valley West and Olathe Northwest.&nbsp;

She lost the next round against the #4 seed in the tournament from Shawnee Mission East, which put her in the consolation bracket. She moved on further in the bracket when her opponent from Washburn Rural had an injury default. However, the regional champion from Wichita Northwest defeated her 8-3 in the next round, ending Micheel’s run in the tournament. Micheel finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. The singles champion was Sarah Yan from Blue Valley West and the doubles team of Long/Schmidt from Shawnee Mission East won the doubles bracket. Shawnee Mission East won the team title followed by Blue Valley West and Olathe Northwest.&nbsp;

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce will host a candidate forum from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Junction City High School.

The 7th Street Bike Boulevard is open for use in Junction City.&nbsp; It begins at&nbsp; the intersection of 7th and Jefferson Streets downtown.

&nbsp;Live Well Geary County (LWGC), using funding from BCBSKS Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant and Kansas Department of Transportation, has partnered with the City of Junction City and Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization for the development of the route. This pathway is a shared roadway with vehicles and is well-marked by new signs.
