Junction City honors workers for March service anniversaries

An 8- foot-tall tomato plant? It sounds like a gardener’s dream, but one innovative young rural Kansas couple is making it become reality using a gardening technique known as hydroponics.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Samuel and MaryAnn Beachy are the founders and owners of Beachy’s Flowers and Produce. They were living in Kentucky and then moved to Kansas to be closer to MaryAnn’s parents in Lyndon.&nbsp;

Samuel was operating a locker plant in Osage City until he sold that business. The Beachys’ church was looking to expand in the Wamego and Manhattan area, and Samuel wanted to pursue a new enterprise there.&nbsp;

“I’ve always been intrigued with growing things,” Samuel said. “I loved to grow things in the garden.”&nbsp;

As he and MaryAnn considered a move, they thought about the type of produce operation that could work best in northeast Kansas and decided to try an indoor, hydroponic system. “He did a lot of studying,” MaryAnn said.&nbsp;

As the Beachys prepared to relocate, they told the realtor they were looking for a location that was served by natural gas and was next to a major highway. The realtor identified just one location. It was the first place the Beachys looked at, and they bought it. “This was a Godsend,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

The location was next to Highway 24 east of Manhattan. It already had a house with a large shop. The Beachys built a state-of-the-art polycarbonate truss-style greenhouse that connected to the shop. It is fully hydroponic, so the plants are raised in recycled water with the precise nutrients needed.&nbsp;

Beachy’s Flowers and Produce opened on November 30, 2022. For now, the flowers are coming from Council Grove, but the produce is homegrown and booming.&nbsp;

The Beachys produce tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, spring onions, kale, spinach, cilantro and cucumbers. In the future, they plan to also grow carrots, beets, potatoes and strawberries. The climate-controlled greenhouse enables produce to be grown year-round.&nbsp;

“My goal is to provide a place where people can buy produce at the same place that it is grown,” Samuel said. That would definitely seem to shorten the supply chain.&nbsp;

“I want to raise enough that you can make a good salad with what we produce.”&nbsp;

The production process is highly scientific, with probes used to control pH and nutrient levels. No soil is needed. Water is constantly recirculated. A retractable ceiling curtain helps control the climate naturally.&nbsp;

“We can open the curtain to let the sun in, and close it when we want to hold in the warmth,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

Lettuce seedlings, for example, are started under growlights. The rooted seedlings, in peat pellets, are placed in rows of watertight PVC trays through which the water and nutrients are pumped and recirculated. The trays are placed on waist-high metal frames and, with time, moved farther apart to make room for the plants to grow.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have to plan ahead,” Samuel said. “We plant 200 seeds per week of lettuce, and harvest in two months.”&nbsp;

The Beachys’ butterhead lettuce, with just a hint of sweetness, is a variety that has proven especially popular.&nbsp;

For tomatoes, the truss ceiling makes it possible to use string to hold up the tops of the plants, enabling them to grow to their full potential. With proper trimming and treatment, these plants can grow eight feet tall and produce extraordinary tomatoes. “Our goal is three-quarter pound tomatoes,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

Their produce is available for sale at grocery stores in Wamego, Westmoreland, and Holton; at Manhattan farmer’s market; and direct from the greenhouse. “I would like to grow the business so that people can come right here for their produce,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

Their location is along Highway 24 northwest of the rural community of St. George, population 1,054 people.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Beachy’s Flowers and Produce 

Although there is a slight chance of sprinkles or flurries Saturday morning, a weekend warmup is right around the corner, the National Weather Service in Topeka said.

After Friday and Saturday highs in the upper-50s, the mercury will jump to nearly 70 on Sunday.

The warm air Sunday will be accompanied by strong winds, sustained at 15 to 25 mph and gusting to 35 mph — increasing the risk of wildfires.

The work week will begin warm as well, with a Monday high in the upper-50s. By Tuesday, the chance of rain or snow returns to the Junction City area.

'Cars & Careers' Car Show coming April 1st at JCHS

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Agricultural producers who have not yet enrolled in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2023 crop year have until March 15, 2023, to elect and enroll a contract. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers these two safety net programs to provide vital income support to farmers experiencing substantial declines in crop prices or revenues.    

“The Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs provide critical protection to many American farmers. As producers across the country deal with market volatility and natural disasters, these programs offer much-needed stability,” said Dennis McKinney, State Executive Director for FSA in Kansas. “I am encouraging producers to reach out to their county offices to learn about program eligibility and election options today, so that they can begin the enrollment process as soon as possible.”  

Producers can elect coverage and enroll in ARC-County or PLC, which are both commodity-by-commodity, or ARC-Individual, which covers the entire farm. Although election changes for 2023 are optional, producers must enroll through a signed contract each year. Additionally, if a producer has a multi-year contract on their farm and makes an election change for 2023, they will need to sign a new contract.    

If producers do not submit an election by the March 15, 2023, deadline, the election remains the same as the 2022 election for commodities on the farm. Farm owners cannot enroll in either program unless they have a share interest in the commodity.     

In Kansas, producers have completed 74,828 contracts to date, representing 72% of the more than 104,000 expected contracts.  

Producers who do not complete enrollment by the deadline will not be enrolled in ARC or PLC for the 2023 year and will not receive a payment if triggered.    

Producers are eligible to enroll farms with base acres for the following commodities:  barley, canola, large and small chickpeas, corn, crambe, flaxseed, grain sorghum, lentils, mustard seed, oats, peanuts, dry peas, rapeseed, long grain rice, medium and short grain rice, safflower seed, seed cotton, sesame, soybeans, sunflower seed and wheat.    

In partnership with USDA, two web-based decision tools are available to assist producers in making informed, educated decisions using crop data specific to their respective farming operations:    

· <a href="https://farmdocdaily.illinois.edu/2019/08/introducing-the-gardner-farmdoc-payment-calculator">Gardner-farmdoc Payment Calculator, a tool available through the University of Illinois allows producers to estimate payments for farms and counties for ARC-CO and PLC.</a>

· <a href="https://www.afpc.tamu.edu/">ARC and PLC Decision Tool, a tool available through Texas A&amp;M University that allows producers to estimate payments and yield updates and expected payments for 2023</a>.

Crop Insurance Considerations and Decision Deadline

ARC and PLC are part of a broader safety net provided by USDA, which also includes crop insurance and marketing assistance loans.  

Producers are reminded that ARC and PLC elections and enrollments can impact eligibility for some crop insurance products.  

Producers on farms with a PLC election have the option of purchasing Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO) through their Approved Insurance Provider. However, producers on farms where ARC is the election are ineligible for SCO on their planted acres for that crop on that farm.   

Unlike SCO, the Enhanced Coverage Option (ECO) is unaffected by an ARC election. Producers may add ECO regardless of the farm program election.  

Upland cotton farmers who choose to enroll seed cotton base acres in ARC or PLC are ineligible for the stacked income protection plan (STAX) on their planted cotton acres for that farm.    

Producers should contact their crop insurance agent to make certain that the election and enrollment made at FSA follows their intention to participate in STAX or SCO coverage. Producers have until March 15, 2023, to make the appropriate changes or cancel their ARC or PLC contract.

JC chamber banquet deadline is Friday

RILEY COUNTY -Law enforcement authorities investigating a hit-and -run that critically injured a man have made an arrest.

Just after 9:30p.m. Feb. 11, police were called to the 4700 block of Skyway Drive in Riley County, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.

First responders found a 30-year-old man on the side of the road with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

The man was initially transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan and he was later transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of his injuries.

Just before 3p.m.&nbsp; March 2, officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested a 34-year-old Kristopher Scott Mackey of Manhattan in connection with the incident. He is being held without bond&nbsp; on requested charges of&nbsp;Interference with LEO; Falsely report a felony, intending to obstruct; Interference with LEO; Conceal/alter/destroy evidence in felony case;&nbsp; and Failure to stop at accident; Result in great bodily harm.

RILEY COUNTY -Law enforcement authorities investigating a hit-and -run that critically injured a man have made an arrest.Just after 9:30p.m. Feb. 11, police were called to the 4700 block of Skyway Drive in Riley County, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.First responders found a 30-year-old man on the side of the road with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.The man was initially transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan and he was later transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of his injuries.Just before 3p.m.&nbsp; March 2, officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested a 34-year-old Kristopher Scott Mackey of Manhattan in connection with the incident. He is being held without bond&nbsp; on requested charges of&nbsp;Interference with LEO; Falsely report a felony, intending to obstruct; Interference with LEO; Conceal/alter/destroy evidence in felony case;&nbsp; and Failure to stop at accident; Result in great bodily harm.

RILEY COUNTY - More than 60 elk from the herd on Fort Riley has been seen east of Keats near Anderson Avenue over the last couple weeks.

Video by a community member shows the herd as it's headed north towards Anderson Avenue.

Fort Riley's Environmental Division posted on Wednesday about an elk who decided to rest near the Ogden gate.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have a teen in custody.

Just after 3a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for burglary and criminal damage to property at Casey's General Store in the 300 block of Riley Ave. in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Someone had broken a window with a baseball bat, entered through the broken window, and stole approximately $250 worth of vaping pods. The damage to the window is worth approximately $500. 

Police responded to the call and quickly identified the suspect as Estevan Rochin, 16, of Ogden. 

Just after 6a.m. Wednesday, police arrested him on requested charges of burglary and criminal damage to property. Rochin will be processed through juvenile intake and released to a guardian.

Over the past couple of months, the talks have switched from continuing on with a farm bill with similar policies as the 2018 version or options that are dramatically different. What will happen is really anyone’s guess, and that is both a challenge and an opportunity for Kansas Farm Bureau and agriculture in general. There are a couple of lines of thinking when it comes to what the farm bill might look like, both are tied to crop insurance. Crop insurance is probably the number one concern when it comes to a new farm bill. As ag producers we know that we rely on crop insurance to help us through weather events like drought and fluctuations in prices and income. It is our way of evening out income in a business that sees wide swings. One school of thought is to tie crop insurance premiums to what we are doing to help with climate change. Kansas Farm Bureau and American Farm Bureau policy would be very much opposed to this. We all know we are the best at conserving our natural resources, and no one care more about the environment than farmers and ranchers. The heartburn is in having practices mandated by those who may not understand agriculture and why we do what we do. Worse yet those mandates could come from others who might be opponents of modern agriculture. Another idea is to tie crop insurance premiums to a producer’s income. Farm Bureau would also be opposed to such a means test. Again, risk management and protection should not be limited to one farmer over another. We also know that many of our large producers are multi-generational. Both of these options are only in the beginning level and that is why each of us can play such an important role as the debate over the next farm bill gets started. It is important for each of us to reach out to our members of Congress to let them know how important the farm bill is for agriculture and specifically how important crop insurance is. Please, write, email or call your representative and senators and tell them how this policy affects you. There will also be opportunities for us to add input at meetings and town halls, be sure you attend any and all that you can. Remember we are less than 2 percent of the population and as the other 98 percent gets farther removed from farms and ranches, they do not understand the importance of the farm bill. In this volatile economy and the long-term drought many of us have suffered through, it is just as critical as it ever has been to make our heard. If we do not advocate for ourselves, no one else will. Watch your emails and texts for alerts from Kansas Farm Bureau and, please, respond when asked. We are in the beginning stages of discussions and hopefully we can have a say in building a better farm bill. TOPEKA — This week,&nbsp;Gov. Laura Kelly announced more than $2&nbsp;million in grant awards to&nbsp;improve how&nbsp;the&nbsp;state supports&nbsp;victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and stalking.&nbsp;

These grants are provided through the Federal Services, Training, Officers, and Prosecutors Violence Against Women Act Formula Grant Program (S.T.O.P. VAWA). The&nbsp;grant&nbsp;program supports efforts&nbsp;to respond&nbsp;to crimes against women&nbsp;by&nbsp;developing,&nbsp;training, or expanding units&nbsp;of&nbsp;law enforcement&nbsp;officers, prosecutors, judges,&nbsp;and court personnel,&nbsp;specifically targeting crimes against women.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Among the agencies receiving funding are:

• Crisis Center, Junction City Domestic Violence Task Force,&nbsp;$52,530 • Crisis Center, Riley Co. Domestic Violence Task Force,&nbsp;$49,642

“We must do all we can to&nbsp;ensure&nbsp;survivors&nbsp;of domestic violence and sexual assault have the&nbsp;support and resources&nbsp;they need&nbsp;to&nbsp;navigate their traumatic experience and demand&nbsp;justice,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“This funding strengthens&nbsp;Kansas’ victim services and legal assistance programs&nbsp;to&nbsp;advance that mission&nbsp;and promote coordinated community responses&nbsp;for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, rape, and stalking.”&nbsp;

Funds from the Federal Sexual Assault Services Program assist programs in providing victims of sexual assault with crisis intervention and accompaniment and advocacy assistance through the medical and criminal justice processes. The funds also provide educational information to survivors of sexual assault.&nbsp;

Funds are available through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women.&nbsp;

Geary, Riley county agencies receive funds to support victims

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating multiple reports of&nbsp;hoax shooting calls at schools across Kansas Wednesday.

The Junction City Police Dispatch received a 911-call just after 8:30 am on Wednesday morning, the caller claimed there was an active threat at the Junction City High School. Dispatchers identified the call as a possible SWATing call and immediately dispatched officers to the school. Dispatchers also contacted USD 475 about the situation. Officers at the school and school officials quickly confirmed there was no active threat at any of the schools within the district.&nbsp;

Just after 8a.m., police in Manhattan received a single call  of an active shooter at Manhattan West Campus, 2100 Poyntz Avenue. Dispatchers quickly identified the call as a potential swatting call and dispatched the police department's School Resource Officer who immediately found the information from the call to be false, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.

A short time later, police responded to a hoax call about an active shooter at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Street in Lawrence, according to police spokesperson Laurie McCabe.

Although, the School Resource Officer inside the school immediately identified this as a swatting incident, police responded swiftly and involved all available officers in the area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition, police received a single call of an active shooter at Highland Park High School,&nbsp;2424 SE California Ave, Topeka, according to a social media report from Topeka Police.

Officers responded, cleared the school and surrounding area and determined there was no threat to the students, staff or the school. Police is looking into the false report of an active shooter,

At around 9:15a.m. Wednesday, the Garden City Police Communications Center received a call of an active shooter at Garden City High School,  2720 Buffalo Wy Blvd. in Garden City. Local law enforcement responded accordingly and cleared the school and surrounding area. This was a false call.

Officers in Wichita also responded to report of an active shooter at North High School, 1437 N Rochester Street in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch. Police responded within minutes and quickly determined that the call was false.

There are no reports of injury at any of the schools as a result of the calls.

 </figure>DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating multiple reports of&nbsp;hoax shooting calls at schools across Kansas Wednesday.The Junction City Police Dispatch received a 911-call just after 8:30 am on Wednesday morning, the caller claimed there was an active threat at the Junction City High School. Dispatchers identified the call as a possible SWATing call and immediately dispatched officers to the school. Dispatchers also contacted USD 475 about the situation. Officers at the school and school officials quickly confirmed there was no active threat at any of the schools within the district.&nbsp;Just after 8a.m., police in Manhattan received a single call of an active shooter at Manhattan West Campus, 2100 Poyntz Avenue. Dispatchers quickly identified the call as a potential swatting call and dispatched the police department's School Resource Officer who immediately found the information from the call to be false, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.<div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">What happens when LKPD gets an active shooter call? The JC Breakfast Optimist Club is a “Friend of Youth” organization.&nbsp; The local club annually donates money to 17 different youth groups in Geary County.&nbsp; Members are engaged in activities that support the growth and development of youth, our community, and our youth.&nbsp; Celebration of Optimism meetings are held every Wednesday at the Hampton Inn in Junction City.&nbsp; A free breakfast buffet is offered to those who attend for the first time beginning at 6:30 a.m.&nbsp; Meetings begin at 6:50 a.m.

On March 1, four new members joined the club. They include Ryan Wilson, Steven Green, Lyn Green and Mike Taylor.

Optimist welcome four new members

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon in connection with a burglary.

Just before 6p.m. Tuesday, police arrested 29-year-old Joseph Keehn of Havensville for his Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The warrant stems from a February 10, 2018, incident where Keehn reportedly pointed a gun at three victims while burglarizing a car. 

Keehn was originally arrested for two counts of aggravated assault and theft on February 11, 2018. Keehn remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $80,000. He has previous convictions for obstruction and for drug possession, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He has been out of prison since December.
