MANHATTAN — Despite a serious last-minute challenge, the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://bae.k-state.edu/student-organizations/tractor-team/index.html" target="_blank">Helwig Farms Quarter-Scale Tractor Team</a>&nbsp;took second place out of 22 teams from other universities at the 26th annual American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers' International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition in Peoria, Illinois, according to a media release from KSU. K-State's team has finished among the top two in this competition 18 times out of the 26 years the event has been held, but this year's success didn't come easy. Each team must perform multiple tasks for the competition, including a written design report, a formal design presentation and a series of performance events — a durability course, a maneuverability course and three tractor pulls. The K-State team completed the report and presentation according to plan, but the night before the first performance event, the main power shaft in the tractor's transmission snapped in two, requiring instant repairs in order to be used in the competition. "The team was clearly frustrated but quickly rose to the occasion and began formulating a plan to solve the problem," said Ed Brokesh, advisor for the team and assistant professor in the Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The team made plans to temporarily repair the shaft for the events the following day, sacrificing the use of second gear in the process, while a new shaft was fabricated and installed in time for the final portion of the competition, the pulling events. Despite this obstacle, K-State's tractor finished second in the durability competition. During that competition, others on the team were dispatched to Chicago to purchase materials for the new shaft, which was built and installed in the hobby machine shop of a K-State alumnus. The new transmission was installed just in time for the final portion of the competition, the pulling event, and performed admirably with a fourth-place finish. "Every competition has its challenges, but for most teams, this type of setback would keep them from finishing the competition at all, much less taking second place," Brokesh said. "This level of resolve is part of why K-State has been so successful in this event over the years." In addition to Brokesh, team advisors are Ryan Zecha, biological and agricultural engineering alumnus, Eli Sheppard, research technologist for the department, and Dan Flippo, associate professor of biological and agricultural engineering. Members of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel (KASRP) met at the Courtyard by Marriot for their 71st Annual Convention June 14, 15 and 16. Karen Pulaski, Convention Chairperson, said “the theme for the Convention was Unity In Purpose.

A pulled pork barbecue meal on June 14 was catered by JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill, hosted by the Board of Directors and sponsored by Central National Bank. Following the evening meal, a live auction was held for the KARSP Foundation teacher scholarships. Items were made or purchased by members and were purchased by the highest bidder.

On June 15, the JCHS JROTC Color Guard presented the colors, Dr. Beth Hudson gave a welcome from USD 475 and the guest speaker was Colonel (ret.) William (Bill) Clark. Bill served in the US Army for 30 years. Following retirement, he was the Chief Operating Officer for USD 475 for three years before assuming his role as the President of St. John’s Military School in Salina, KS. Upon the merger of St. John’s with Saint Francis Ministries, Bill initially served as the organization’s Chief of Staff before assuming his current role as President/CEO in November of 2019. Saint Francis Ministries serves 11,000 children in six states.

His topic was "Everything Rises and Falls On Leadership." He told the group that “The standard is the standard. We all must be accountable and responsible in living and working with others, but it all starts with ourselves. Do the right thing at the right time for the right reason– even when no one is looking.”

Following lunch, the KARSP Foundation awarded scholarships to four teachers. The teachers will use their money to purchase items not provided by their school district for use in their classrooms. The evening entertainment was provided by the Tall Grass Tunesmiths Polka Group directed by Mary Louise Stahl.

The schedule for Friday included a Memorial Service for KARSP members who passed during the last year. The Robotics EDU-Building The Future,1 Bot At A Time group shared information about how students are being exposed to a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related concepts, such as coding, electronics and mechanics, which helps to develop critical thinking, problemsolving, and teamwork abilities.

KARSP members contributed 261,860 volunteer hours this past year. According to the April Independent Sector the estimated value of volunteer time per hour is $31.80, which for KARSP members would equal $8,327,148.

Jerry Henn is the Executive Director of KARSP. He is also a former teacher at Junction City High School.

KARSP celebrates 71st annual convention

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas ranks seventh in economic well-being but is in the middle of the pack in education, health, and family and community context outcomes, according to the&nbsp;2023 KIDS COUNT® Data Book, a 50-state report of recent household data developed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

"What really stands out from this year's report is the need for high quality, affordable childcare that is accessible to all Kansas families," said John Wilson with Kansas Action for Children. "Also, the need for childcare professionals to receive a living wage in order to continue to provide that care."

Kansas’ average cost of center-based child care for a toddler was $8,074, or 8% of the median income of a married couple and nearly 26% of a single mother’s income in the state.

"Without access to high quality early learning opportunities, parents and caregivers can't get to work," Wilson said. "That obviously impacts their economic well-being, that impacts their ability to afford health insurance, afford housing, those sorts of things."

While the cost of care burdens families, child care workers are paid worse than 98% of professions. Median national pay for child care workers was $28,520 per year or $13.71 an hour in 2022, less than the wage for retail ($14.26) and customer service ($18.16) workers. But in Kansas, the average wage for fulltime child care workers is even lower at $11.27 an hour, or just $22,540 a year.

"In order to address fourth grade reading scores or eighth grade math scores, you don't do that in fourth grade and eighth grade," Wilson said. "You do that early in a child's life, by providing those high-quality affordable early learning opportunities that set them up for success when they enter kindergarten."

In the survey, Kansas ranked 17th overall — seventh in economic well-being, 22nd in health, 24th in family and community and 26th in education.

Survey highlights childcare need in Kansas

Allen DinkelCity Manager for Junction City&nbsp; Each day we receive a number of calls here at the office and I receive my share of calls, e-mails and texts. These calls deal with a wide variety of topics. Some are just requesting information and yes, we do get calls from those who are not “Happy with Something” and they want to voice their opinion. &nbsp;

Recently we have been receiving calls about all of the trenching that is being done, throughout the City. &nbsp;Many know that Twin Valley is building high speed internet services across the entire City. Many are excited about this service that will be available, however at the current time there continues to be the placing of the fiber and conduit in the ground. This process has not been “pain free” and we have received a number of call at the office. &nbsp;One this week was from a resident that was concerned the markings made on his lawn. &nbsp;He was concerned as to why they came onto his property and sprayed paint markings and left small flags. &nbsp;

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the franchise agreements that the City has with various utility companies that provide services within the City. &nbsp; This includes electric, natural gas, telephone and communication, and in this instance, fiber optic services. &nbsp;With the agreements, all of these firms are allowed to utilize the same areas that the City uses. &nbsp;This includes Right-of-Ways (ROW’s) which include streets and alleys in the parts of the community that still have alleys. &nbsp;There are also easements. &nbsp;Many people get the two terms mixed up at times. &nbsp;ROW’s are property owned by the public, where an easement is privately owned property and at some point, the City was given the ability to use this area for utilities by the property owners. &nbsp;In all cases the easements are of “record and are filed with the Geary County Register of Deeds office. &nbsp;

Most City streets are in the middle of the ROW. &nbsp;Let’s assume the right of way is 60 feet wide (this may vary in different portions of the City) and the street measures, let’s say 40 foot wide, from the back of the curb to the back of the curb. &nbsp;Divide the 60 by 2 and about 10 feet right of way on each side is behind the curb.&nbsp;Yes,&nbsp;this is owned by the City, but State Statute and City code place the responsibility to maintain this area by the adjacent property owner. We will get back to this in a few paragraphs.&nbsp;

The fiber optic infrastructure is being placed underground where there are other utilities already in place. &nbsp; Of course, the goal is not to hit another service, but in cases it does occur. &nbsp;The contractors call 811, like anyone should before you “Dig”. All of the registered utilities are contacted, and each company then marks the utilities they have buried. Some of the companies utilize a company to mark their lines, but others, like the City with water and sewer, mark their own utility. In the case of the City waterline, the newer lines have a tracer wire so the line can be located. &nbsp;Regardless. There are times the line is missed. &nbsp;With all the utilities, some have been underground, sight unseen for years. &nbsp;

This week there was 2 occasions when a natural gas line was hit. &nbsp;Unlike water lines that are severed, there is a safety concern that has to be dealt with it. Emergency crews are called and the safety of all is made the top priority.&nbsp;

On the water side, the City can only mark the water main. There have been issues with the contractors hitting lawn sprinklers that of course are not owned by the City. We also cannot always know where water lines and sewer lines are coming off of the main lines and owned by the property owner. &nbsp;Over the years, I have found that water and sewer lines gong to the house are not where you think they may be. &nbsp;

Some of the owners do reach out to us at the City Office when something does occur with this project or with any utility. &nbsp;We have a great working relationship with &nbsp;all of the companies who have a franchise agreement with the City, and we contact them to address the concerns. &nbsp;They all realize that this can happen, but they take care of it as well.

Let’s go back to City ROW’s. As mentioned above the adjacent property owner takes care of this area. &nbsp;Yes, you can have your lawn sprinkler system in the right-of-way and also trees. &nbsp;Trees are never an issue until they die, and they have to be removed. &nbsp;Of course, that is sometimes not always inexpensive. State Statute is clear in the ownership of these trees in that they belong to the adjacent property owner. &nbsp;Of course, when the tree is ever damaged, the adjacent property owner is compensated. &nbsp;

When calls are made to the City office, we attempt to take head you in the right direction and assist when we can. In the case of the current utility project , we know there will be concerns in this large project that is however bringing a great asset to all of us. We try to assist when we can.

This process has not been “pain free” and we have received a number of call at the office. &nbsp;One this week was from a resident that was concerned the markings made on his lawn. &nbsp;He was concerned as to why they came onto his property and sprayed paint markings and left small flags. &nbsp;A few weeks ago, I wrote about the franchise agreements that the City has with various utility companies that provide services within the City. &nbsp; This includes electric, natural gas, telephone and communication, and in this instance, fiber optic services. &nbsp;With the agreements, all of these firms are allowed to utilize the same areas that the City uses. &nbsp;This includes Right-of-Ways (ROW’s) which include streets and alleys in the parts of the community that still have alleys. &nbsp;There are also easements. &nbsp;Many people get the two terms mixed up at times. &nbsp;ROW’s are property owned by the public, where an easement is privately owned property and at some point, the City was given the ability to use this area for utilities by the property owners. &nbsp;In all cases the easements are of “record and are filed with the Geary County Register of Deeds office. &nbsp;Most City streets are in the middle of the ROW. &nbsp;Let’s assume the right of way is 60 feet wide (this may vary in different portions of the City) and the street measures, let’s say 40 foot wide, from the back of the curb to the back of the curb. &nbsp;Divide the 60 by 2 and about 10 feet right of way on each side is behind the curb.&nbsp;Yes,&nbsp;this is owned by the City, but State Statute and City code place the responsibility to maintain this area by the adjacent property owner. We will get back to this in a few paragraphs.&nbsp;The fiber optic infrastructure is being placed underground where there are other utilities already in place. &nbsp; Of course, the goal is not to hit another service, but in cases it does occur. &nbsp;The contractors call 811, like anyone should before you “Dig”. All of the registered utilities are contacted, and each company then marks the utilities they have buried. Some of the companies utilize a company to mark their lines, but others, like the City with water and sewer, mark their own utility. In the case of the City waterline, the newer lines have a tracer wire so the line can be located. &nbsp;Regardless. There are times the line is missed. &nbsp;With all the utilities, some have been underground, sight unseen for years. &nbsp;This week there was 2 occasions when a natural gas line was hit. &nbsp;Unlike water lines that are severed, there is a safety concern that has to be dealt with it. Emergency crews are called and the safety of all is made the top priority.&nbsp;On the water side, the City can only mark the water main. There have been issues with the contractors hitting lawn sprinklers that of course are not owned by the City. We also cannot always know where water lines and sewer lines are coming off of the main lines and owned by the property owner. &nbsp;Over the years, I have found that water and sewer lines gong to the house are not where you think they may be. &nbsp;Some of the owners do reach out to us at the City Office when something does occur with this project or with any utility. &nbsp;We have a great working relationship with &nbsp;all of the companies who have a franchise agreement with the City, and we contact them to address the concerns. &nbsp;They all realize that this can happen, but they take care of it as well.Let’s go back to City ROW’s. As mentioned above the adjacent property owner takes care of this area. &nbsp;Yes, you can have your lawn sprinkler system in the right-of-way and also trees. &nbsp;Trees are never an issue until they die, and they have to be removed. &nbsp;Of course, that is sometimes not always inexpensive. State Statute is clear in the ownership of these trees in that they belong to the adjacent property owner. &nbsp;Of course, when the tree is ever damaged, the adjacent property owner is compensated. &nbsp;When calls are made to the City office, we attempt to take head you in the right direction and assist when we can. In the case of the current utility project , we know there will be concerns in this large project that is however bringing a great asset to all of us. We try to assist when we can.

BOONE COUNTY—A Manhattan woman was among two with suspected minor injuries in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Saturday in Boone County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Kia Optima driven by Byron J. Redifer, 27, Kincaid, Kansas, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of the Route J exit.

The car rear-ended a 2021 Volvo semi driven by Pebbles J. Cutler, 62, Galveston, Texas, who was stopped in traffic due to road construction.

University EMS transported two passengers in the Kia identified as Jamie N. Wineland, 24, Manhattan, and Trevor R. Tush, 26, Garnett to Boone Hospital. The drivers were not injured. Redifer and Wineland were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

TOPEKA – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in May. This is unchanged from 2.9% in April and an increase from 2.5% in May 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 1,500 from April. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 2,200 over the month, while government increased by 700.

The jobless rate in Geary County is down slightly from 4.1 percent in April to 3.8 percent. Riley, Wabaunsee and Dickinson County all saw a similar drop. The rate in Pottawatomie County remained steady at 2.2 percent.

“Kansas estimates for both monthly labor market surveys indicate little change in May,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The survey of employers shows no significant change in job estimates over the month. While the survey of households indicates a small increase in employment, there was no change in the unemployment rate at 2.9%.”

Since May 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 31,800. This change is due to an increase of 26,600 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,200 government jobs.

Geary County Arrest Report June 16

RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;The Riley County Police Department has taken reports of eight suspected fentanyl-related overdose deaths in Riley County since the beginning of 2023, according to a media release from the agency. The majority of these overdoses are occurring in young adults aged 18-24. Police continue to see counterfeit Oxycodone pills, commonly referred to as “dirty 30s", in the majority of these overdoses and in other drug-related crimes in the county.

Fentanyl is also commonly hidden in counterfeit pills appearing as Xanax, Percocet, or Adderall, and has been found in cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and heroin. "Our community is not immune to this national crisis," said Director Brian Peete. "Please remember the only safe medications are ones prescribed by a trusted medical professional and dispensed by a licensed pharmacist. Criminal drug networks mass-produce fake pills and falsely market them as legit prescription pills." While previous arrests have been made, our goal remains to identify, apprehend, and prosecute any distributor and/or distribution network that is bringing these drugs into our community. "We want to emphasize an individual who overdoses is not a suspect in our investigations," said Investigations Captain Erin Freidline. "Those responsible for trafficking this deadly drug will be held accountable for their actions and punished to the fullest extent." The statute police use to investigate overdoses is KSA 21-5430 - Distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm which is a level 5 person felony. Distribution of a controlled substance causing death is a level 1 person felony. The new exhibit looks at local businesses like restaurants, grocery stores, clothing stores and soda fountains over the last 170 years with artifacts on display from many local favorites including Cohen’s Chicken House, the Colonial Theater and Clewell’s Pharmacy, according to&nbsp;Heather Hagedorn, Executive Director/Curator Geary County Historical Society.

A gas main line was struck and that KS Gas was notified. Crews are evacuated the areas around this incident and barricades were placed in the area.&nbsp; Officials hoped to have the area cleared by approximately 3p.m.

Just after 5a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 5500 block of Skyway Dr. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Manhattan Airport reported an object, possibly a baseball, was thrown through the front terminal window. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,500. 

Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD investigating criminal damage at Manhattan airport

MORRIS COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just 9a.m. Thursday in Morris County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Dodge Journey driven by&nbsp; Julian&nbsp; Navarrete, 43, Wichita, was northbound on U.S. 77 eleven miles south of Interstate 70.

The SUV crossed the center line and struck a 2005 Kenworth semi driven by Jose Luis Garcia-Parra, 34, Salina, head-on. 

The semi continued into a spin and collided with a 2022 Hyundai Tucson driven by Kathleen Nicole&nbsp;Steeves, 43, Wamego. After impact the semi came to&nbsp;rest jack knifed in the east ditch where a 2001 Ford Econoline driven by&nbsp; Bell, John Allen Bell, 57, Amado, Arizona, struck the semi.

EMS transported&nbsp;&nbsp;Navarrete and Bell to the hospital in Manhattan,&nbsp;&nbsp;

EMS transported Steeves and a passenger in the Hyundai Lisa Kristine Ross, 52, Manhattan, to the hospital in Junction City.

Garcia-Parra has a possible injury but was not transported, according to the KHP.&nbsp; All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

4 hospitalized after 4-vehicle head-on crash

JUNCTION CITY - The Junction City Police Department was called out to the 1400 block of N. Calhoun Street at just before 11:45pm on Wednesday, June 14th, on the report of a possible overdose.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a 40-year-old female suffering from an apparent overdose. The Junction City Fire Department transported the woman to the Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus and then on to Stormont Vail in Topeka where she is in critical condition.

Following an investigation, Junction City Drug Task Force Detectives served a search warrant at a residence in the 300 block of W. 13th Street in Junction City.

After the search detectives arrested 40-year-old, Alex D. Schooler, of Junction City in connection with the overdose.&nbsp;

Schooler was booked into the Geary County Detention Center on requested charges of:&nbsp; -Distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm or death -Distribution of certain stimulants within 1000 feet of a school -Criminal use of a weapon by a prohibited person -Distribution of opiates within 1000 feet of a school -Possession of marijuana -Possession of drug paraphernalia -Acquisition of drug proceeds

Detectives found cocaine, fentanyl pills, marijuana, 9 firearms and approximately $17,000 in US Currency.

Schooler is being held without bond, at the Geary County Detention Facility, while he awaits his first appearance in the Geary County District Court.

JCPD will release no further details at this time.

JCPD: 40 y.o. JC man arrested, 40 y.o. woman hospitalized for apparent overdose

Throughout our nation's history, Americans have answered the call to serve regardless of the circumstances or danger that lay ahead. The United States is the greatest country in the world because generations of brave servicemembers stepped up to the plate to preserve and protect our American ideals and values. It's a tremendous honor to represent so many veterans across Kansas, and I will never stop fighting to ensure America's heroes get the care and benefits they deserve from the federal government.

At the beginning of the 118th Congress, I was selected to serve on the House Appropriations Committee. The job of this committee is to fund the federal government and ensure our hard-earned tax dollars are being spent responsibly in Washington. My colleagues and I on the committee work on a wide range of issues, including national defense, agriculture, energy, healthcare, and border security. Still, one of the most crucial roles of the committee is funding veterans' programs at the VA.

This week, the Appropriations Committee sat down and started working through our nation’s budget for Fiscal Year 2024. One of the first steps of the process is holding full committee markups to go through each federal agency's budget line by line, and on Tuesday, we looked at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Having the opportunity to strengthen and bolster VA programs and veterans' benefits is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I promised Kansans I wouldn’t cut veterans' benefits during the Appropriations process, and I’m proud that the bill Republicans passed out of committee this week delivers on that promise. The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies appropriations bill honors our commitment to America's heroes by increasing VA funding by more than $16 billion from last fiscal year. This legislation fully funds veterans’ health care programs, veterans’ benefits, and other critical VA programs. We took action to ensure the PACT Act has adequate funding to help millions of toxic-exposed veterans get the care they deserve. We also provided resources to remove burdensome red tape at the VA and make it easier for veterans to keep track of their healthcare and service records. In addition to fortifying benefits for our veterans, this bill helps improve the quality of life for our current servicemembers and their families by providing funding for military bases and facilities, including barracks, child development centers, and family housing.

America's veterans and their families sacrificed so much for our nation. Without the bravery of these individuals, the United States would not be the beacon of freedom and democracy that it is today. One of my top priorities in Congress is ensuring that the 160,000+ veterans across Kansas are taken care of by our federal government. That includes securing wins through the legislative process like we did this week, but also being their advocate when it comes to navigating the bureaucratic maze at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Rep. Jake LaTurner: Honoring our commitment to America’s heroes

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Changes in how cattle are raised -- including genetic improvements and matching animals to the environment in which they’re raised – has likely led to changes in consumer’s perceptions of what makes a good beef product, according to two Kansas State University animal scientists.

“If we look at the last 30 years in the beef industry, when we talk about eating quality, tenderness for a long time was viewed as the No. 1 driver of customer satisfaction,” said K-State meat scientist Travis O’Quinn.

“But we’ve made massive improvements in beef tenderness and right now we can go to the grocery store and less than 10% of that beef will be considered tough by today’s consumers. What that has done is it’s changed how consumers view beef. Today, when we feed consumers in our studies and you ask them what they consider the most important palatability trait, flavor consistently comes up by about 70% of consumers as the reason they choose beef.”

A.J. Tarpoff, a beef extension veterinarian at K-State, said genetic improvements in the beef industry have led to producers being able to select and raise cattle that provide desired traits.

“So we can choose what we want our animals to be with better accuracy than we ever have had in history,” Tarpoff said. “That being said, we have answered the call of consumers for what their preferences are, what a profitable animal can be within all stages of production, and match that to their environment. We raise cattle in all 50 states, so we have to be able to match the animal to whatever environment they’re raised in, while maintaining the high quality, palatability traits that our consumers demand.”

O’Quinn said the changes have led to a higher percentage of beef meeting USDA’s standard for ‘Prime’ and ‘Choice,’ and less receiving the lower grading of ‘Select.’

“Cattle in the United States are grading better today than they ever have in history,” O’Quinn said. “That’s a direct result of a lot of things, including genetic improvement, feeding changes, selection management and programs that give economic incentives for producers to produce higher eating quality beef. That resonates throughout the beef chain, and ultimately to consumers in restaurants and in retail.”

“It’s a great time to be a beef consumer in the United States when we talk about the quality of product that we’re putting on the plate.”

Tarpoff noted that improvements in the consumer product have paralleled improvements in animal comfort and care.

“Beef Quality Assurance is a nationally coordinated, state implemented program that is voluntary for cattle producers,” he said. (Since its inception in the 1980s) “BQA has become the standardized best management practice certification in the beef industry. Up to 85% of U.S. beef comes from BQA certified, independent producers.”

Tarpoff called BQA a “critical piece” of caring for cattle, assuring a quality product and that producers are implementing best management practices backed by science.

“We want to care for these animals the right way,” he said, “and we’re always looking for better ways to be able to do that.”

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating an injury crash and have made an arrest.

Just after 7p.m. Wednesday, officers arrested 54-year-old Jose Torres of Manhattan on a Riley County District Court warrant for aggravated battery, transporting an open container, failure to stop at an accident, passing with insufficient clearance and driving with no license, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

This warrant stems from a March 24 crash near the intersection of E. Marlatt Avenue and Brookepointe Circle in Manhattan.

 It was reported that Torres left the scene of the crash after his westbound 2007 Chevrolet van crossed the center line of E. Marlatt and struck an eastbound 2002 Chevy Silverado driven by Jesus Maldonado, 60, of Manhattan.

 A passenger of the Silverado, Juan Maldonado, 31, of Manhattan was trapped in the passenger side and was eventually transported to Via Christi for treatment of a broken wrist and other cuts, scrapes, and bruises. 

Officers also found an open container of alcohol in the unoccupied van when they arrived on scene. Torres was issued a total bond of $15,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report.

RCPD makes arrest in hit-and-run injury crash

Historical Society’s Programs And Education Director Lisa Highsmith, Director of Programs and Education at the<a href="http://www.gchsweb.org/"> Geary County Historical Society</a> (GCHS) was the guest speaker at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s June 14 Celebration of Optimism. Lisa is a doctoral candidate in the content area of history at Kansas State University.

She has worked at the Texas Tech University in the Entomology Department and the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas and has worked at GCHS for nearly one year.

Lisa told the Optimists that she is “passionate about history” and has maintained some education programs previously established and added STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Saturdays and other programs for youth and adults that focus on the history of Geary County. One example is the most recent was the time travel camp held at the Museum for nineteen young people ages 8-12 years old. “The camp lasted for four days from May 30 until June 2 between the hours of nine and noon. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club, Hildebrand Dairy and United Way helped sponsor the camp.

“Each day focused on the experiences pioneers may have had traveling west and ending up in Kansas. The first day centered around a theme titled Makers Day. Questions like: What could be done if there is no electricity? How did people see to do things at night? Campers learned that kerosene lanterns and pioneers made their own candles. An average family used 400 candles per year.” Campers made their own candles.

Ms. Highsmith explained that “on the second day, campers were exposed to making paper and water mills. The hand made water mills were created to help the young campers understand that mills were used for power to make flour for food.”

Day three was Packing Day. Lisa stated that campers were asked to make a paper trunk that would hold a certain number of identified items a family might need to go into the trunk. The trunk had to have handles and withstand being lifted for 30 seconds” to meet Lisa’s requirements for worthiness. There could only be one trunk per family because there was only so much room to use in a wagon. Pioneers needed to follow a topographical map in some cases and campers learned about elevation and markings on a map. Students also learned that although Kansas is referred to as being flatter than a pancake, Kansas is the seventh flattest state in the United States. Campers got to make and enjoy eating pancakes using the batter from IHOP.

Day four consisted of using a trail guide. “Cards were placed around the museum and inthe vacant field near the museum identifying casualties or mishaps that might have been experienced by the early pioneers and campers. Campers had to create ways to deal with the challenges along their imaginary journey. Having reached their goal of coming to Kansas,campers were treated to Hildebrand ice cream and a t-shirt”, she said.

Lisa also shared that the “GCHS STEAM Saturday June 17 from 1:00-3:30 PM at the Spring Valley Historic Site at 816 N. Spring Valley Road. Tomahawk throwing, an 1880s tipi, displays of hides from Kansas critters and museum-quality replicas will be on display. On June 24, a new exhibit will open from 1-4:00 PM at the Museum located at 530 N. Adams titledBusiness Through the Ages. The gallery will include Geary County businesses during the last 150 years.”

Optimist hear all about GCHS programming

GEARY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Ford Focus driven by Daniel Charles Ricci, 47, Abington, Maryland, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of McDowell Creek Road.&nbsp;

The car struck road debris. EMS transported Ricci to Stormont Vail in Topeka. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

GEARY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Wednesday in Geary County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Ford Focus driven by Daniel Charles Ricci, 47, Abington, Maryland, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of McDowell Creek Road.&nbsp;The car struck road debris. EMS transported Ricci to Stormont Vail in Topeka. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

A 2012 Ford F-150 driven by Jack Bowen, 51, of Marysville, was eastbound at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Blvd and Marlatt Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The pickup rear-ended&nbsp;A 2016 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Rodney Dugan, 48, of Leonardville who had stopped on Tuttle Creek Blvd. when he drove upon a 2002 Chrysler Concorde driven by Steven Cortez, 25, of Ellinwood that was on fire.

EMS transported passengers in Bowen's truck Heidi Bowen, 38, and two minors to Via Christi for treatment of various pain and non-life-threatening injuries.

MANHATTAN— Fire investigators have determined the fire that occurred early Monday morning was caused by used staining rags that ignited due to spontaneous combustion, according to a media release from the Manhattan Fire Department.

Two cats were rescued by firefighters and provided oxygen by Riley County EMS, and another cat was found deceased due to smoke inhalation. &nbsp;

The one-story building was occupied by one occupant at the time of the fire who was able to exit the structure without injury. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $40,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Valerie Carrol of Manhattan.

MANHATTAN—Authorities are working to determine the cause of an early morning fire at a home in Manhattan.

At 1:17 a.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 1726 Colorado Street for a report of a garage on fire, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story home with fire showing in the attached garage and heavy smoke coming from the interior of the residence. 

Fire crews contained the fire to the garage within 15 minutes. A total of 17 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus.&nbsp; Three cats were removed from the structure, 2 were alive and were provided oxygen by fire crews, and one was found deceased due to smoke inhalation. The one-story home was occupied by one occupant at the time of the fire who was able to exit the structure without injury. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $40,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Valerie Carrol of Manhattan.&nbsp;
