Everyone knows that feeling you get when something special is about to happen, the anticipation, excitement, tingle, the thrill. Now multiply that one hundred times, and you might understand what happens to junior cattle exhibitors as they walk into the Grand Drive of the Aggieville Showdown.

"I get goosebumps just thinking about last year's Grand Drive," McKenna Richardson said as she enthusiastically recalled the 2022 Aggieville Showdown. As the ramp of her cattle trailer dropped, Richardson, from Eureka, Kansas, wasn't mentally prepared for the Showdown experience and walking her Simmental heifer through the crowd to the show ring in the heart of Aggieville, Manhattan, Kansas. For someone who shows at major shows and junior national, that's a big statement.

Not only is the Aggieville Showdown location distinctive, but more importantly, the crowd! With an ax-throwing venue on one side and a bistro on the other, patrons from the eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and bars, many of whom have never been to a cattle show, surround the show ring on Moro Street. Last year over 1,000 people watched the Grand Drive for prospect steers and breeding heifers.

The philosophy of educating non-agriculture people about the cattle industry was the driving force behind the development of the Aggieville Showdown by Founder and Executive Director Christian Calliham.

For people whose only knowledge of the cattle industry is they like their steak medium rare, the Showdown is a unique opportunity to witness the dedication and hard work of livestock exhibitors and learn about the cattle industry.

Richardson said that the crowd recognizes the significance of what is happening in the show ring. She laughed, recalling her dad felt a bit like a celebrity when people realized his daughter was showing and named reserve champion.

Now gearing up for the third show on April 1, the Aggieville Showdown brings exhibitors ages 8 through 25 from across the country to the Riley County Fairgrounds. The show for prospect steers, breeding heifers, and showmanship begins at 9:30 AM, and division winners travel to downtown Aggieville for the ultimate Grand Drive experience that evening.

With over $7500 in cash prizes, the Grand Drive is the marquee event, but the "Ville is alive with other activities as part of the Showdown. A western fashion show by Vanderbilt's, live music, vendors, and even an after-party at the Yard Bar.

Live interviews at the Drive's conclusion allow the exhibitors of the champion animals and the premier showman to tell "their story" about their experience at the Showdown.

While Lauren Fredrick from Hutchinson, Kansas, wasn't in the Grand Drive, she was on stage as the premier showman, besting 105 other exhibitors from seven states. Fredrick was excited to share how the cattle industry has made her who she is today.

"I've never been a shy person and being able to stand up on stage and talk about something I am so passionate about is truly special.”

She acknowledged the Aggieville Showdown is quickly becoming a prestigious show, and younger exhibitors may be intimidated to exhibit. The articulate 21-year-old is winding up her show career and said the Aggieville Showdown is an exceptional opportunity for all cattle exhibitors, and younger exhibitors must "put themselves out there." While they might not make it to the Drive, they can excel at showmanship or just come to the Drive and experience the excitement of the show ring and keep working to be in the Drive.

"Knowing that younger exhibitors hear me, someone not much older than them, be able to have a platform to share about our industry and what it does for us is a cool experience. There are no other shows but the Aggieville Showdown where you can do that."

Richardson and Fredrick said it was hard to describe the Aggieville Showdown experience. They both acknowledged the only way to understand how unique the Aggieville Showdown truly is - is to be there.

Aggieville Showdown - Truly a Unique Experience

WASHINGTON — For the first time since 2001, the U.S. Army has 
introduced a new brand that redefines what it means to <a href="https://www.goarmy.com/?iom=BNL7-22-0029_N_OSOC_OCPA_AL_ocpagen_xx_xx">“Be All You Can 
Be” for a new generation. </a>Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth, Army 
Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael 
Grinston made the announcement during a much-anticipated launch event at
 the National Press Club. The brand and its accompanying campaign 
spotlight the countless opportunities the Army provides youth to explore
 their passions, build community and become the best versions of 
themselves.

"At a time when political, economic and social factors are 
changing how young Americans view the world, the new Army brand 
illustrates how service in the Army is grounded in passion and purpose,"
 said Wormuth. "Serving our nation is a calling, and one that is 
fundamentally hopeful. We want a new generation of Americans to see the 
Army as a pathway to the lives and careers they want to achieve."

The brand transformation was a multiyear, research-based 
process designed to reflect today’s Army accurately and authentically, 
while addressing the needs of a new generation. The brand’s new look and
 feel consists of a reengineered five-point star logo — (the box has 
been removed to reflect the limitless possibilities in the Army) coupled
 with the return of the popular “Be All You Can Be” tagline.

The logo and tagline are a part of a full-brand ecosystem that helps 
tell the Army story visually and verbally, including a new custom font, 
an expanded color palette, new iconography, photography, motion graphics
 and more.

“All good brands must evolve to reflect internal and 
external changes to ensure an accurate depiction of the organization 
that also meets audience needs,” said Maj. Gen. Alex Fink, Chief of Army
 Enterprise Marketing. “We know youth seek purpose, passion, community 
and connection, but we also know many don’t recognize the Army’s ability
 to deliver on those needs. We need a brand that effectively 
communicates the possibilities of Army service.”

“’Be All You Can Be’ is a phrase that has inspired many 
generations of Soldiers, and its promise still rings true today,” said 
McConville. “This is the message for the moment and for the future.”

At the center of the brand rollout are two films narrated 
by Emmy and Critics’ Choice Award nominated actor Jonathan Majors, star 
of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Creed III.” With
 a focus on the Army’s 247 years of achievement, the two films — 
“Overcoming Obstacles” and “Pushing Tomorrow” — showcase Army service as
 a driver of possibilities and serve as a bridge between the past and 
the future to connect with and inspire the American public.

These films and the multifaceted, multichannel campaign bringing them
 to audiences nationwide will be coupled with a mix of bold, immersive 
promotional assets across television, print, digital billboards, 
streaming video, social and community platforms, and audio channels. The
 paid media campaign tips off at the highly anticipated 2023 NCAA March 
Madness tournament with on-site activations, broadcast showcases, and 
digital campaign extensions. Starting in May, a first-of-its kind 
co-branded partnership with NBCUniversal will leverage high-impact 
programming moments across the entire NBCU ecosystem from hit shows

U.S. Army introduces new brand, logo for first time since '01

The National Weather Service in Topeka is predicting a cooler, rainy Wednesday and Thursday, with a thunderstorm possible, as well.

After intermittent showers throughout the day possible Wednesday, the chances of rain increase in the early morning hours of Thursday. By Thursday morning, the chance of rain increases to 90 percent, the NWS said.

After a dry Friday, a 20 percent to 40 percent chance of rain returns Saturday.

The high temperatures the remainder of the week will be in the mid- to upper-40s.

RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;A Manhattan woman has been arrested in connection to sex crimes reported to have occurred in February 2023 involving a 13-year-old boy known to her, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Just after 11a.m. Tuesday, police arrested 28-year-old Elizabeth Butry on requested charges that include three counts of rape, two counts of contributing to a child’s misconduct, and one count each of attempted rape and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

She remains confined in the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond pending her first appearance in court.

Linton builds academic, industry relationships with $125M campus project

MANHATTAN — The food scientist in Richard Linton leans back in a 
purple-and-white chair in Call Hall to recite contents of his favorite 
ice cream.

It is cherry brick road — at least until a new favorite creation 
emerges from the dairy science lab at Kansas State University. The 
current preference was crafted while he was agriculture dean at North 
Carolina State University. The four key ingredients: chocolate ice 
cream, marshmallows, chocolate chunks and Michigan cherries.

“The two chocolates were my wife’s and daughter’s. My son was the 
marshmallow. I was cherries,” said Linton, who just completed his rookie
 year as Kansas State president. “We used to say, ‘Follow the cherry 
brick road.’ It was the No. 2 seller at N.C. State.”

The university educator and economic visionary in Linton also 
appreciated the campus dairy bar, which also sells flour, meat and dairy
 goods produced nearby, was situated in the middle of a planned $125 
million infrastructure construction and renovation project aimed at 
elevating reach of the College of Agriculture.

Linton said the blend of state and private funding would highlight 
Kansas State’s new interdisciplinary approach to attracting students, 
building a workforce, supporting the economy, expanding next-generation 
research and working closer with private industry. Kansas State raised 
more than $82 million in private donations to qualify for the maximum 
3:1 match from the state of $25 million.

A supplemental $25 million appropriation from state lawmakers brought
 to $125 million the total available for development of a new Global 
Center for Food and Grain Innovation, Agronomy Research Center, Agronomy
 Innovation Center and Livestock Competition Arena. The project, part 
demolition and part construction, was expected to start this summer and 
be wrapped up in late 2026.

“It’s just amazing how the industry stepped up to be able to support 
this effort,” Linton said on the Kansas Reflector podcast. “It’s all 
about bringing different disciplines together&nbsp;to be able to solve the grand global challenges of agriculture. Let’s take water as an example. You need to have agronomists. You need to have soil scientists. You need to have geologists. You might need to have plant scientists. All of these different disciplines can’t solve the challenges alone.”

Linton is intent on bringing new focus to Kansas State’s status as 
the nation’s first operational land-grant university — a distinction 
held since 1863. The core function of a land-grant university has been 
to use research-based information to improve the quality of life for all
 Kansans, he said. That’s often recognized by Kansas State’s operation 
of the agricultural extension service.

“It’s the university for the people, for the people of the state,” the president said. “What makes us different from any other university here in Kansas, is that we’re present every single day improving lives&nbsp;and changing communities in all 105 counties.”

Kansas State’s goal for promoting prosperity in Kansas includes 
creation of 3,000 jobs and addition of $3 billion to the state’s 
economy.

Linton was named the 15th president of Kansas State in December 2021,
 and displayed his new purple socks during the initial news conference. 
He was agriculture dean at N.C. State from 2012 to 2022, food science 
department chairman at Ohio State university from 2011 to 2012 and a 
food science professor at Purdue University from 1994 to 2011. He holds a
 bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in food science and a 
doctorate in food science from Virginia Tech University.

He began his presidential duties in Manhattan in February 2022, and 
has made his presence felt by visiting dozens of counties during the 
past year.

“It’s about celebrating the partnerships that we already have in place,” Linton said. “It’s about thinking about new partnerships that could be created. And, it’s also about selling the amazing student experience that we have at Kansas State&nbsp;to prospective parents&nbsp;and students that may want to go into higher education. Ninety-five percent of success in higher education&nbsp;is building relationships and establishing trust.”

Linton said it was no secret Kansas State’s enrollment slid from more
 than 24,000 in 2014 to less than 20,000 last fall, and stabilizing and 
expanding student enrollment remained one of his top administrative 
priorities.

“Declining enrollment is a big issue and challenge for all land-grants. And, at Kansas State, it’s been our biggest challenge over the last eight years,” he said. “We&nbsp;have to adapt and think differently about changing demographics. And we need to have a balance of in-state students&nbsp;and out-of-state students in order to be able to fulfill the operational needs of the university.”

He said the expanding Hispanic population in southwest Kansas meant 
Kansas State had to consider how to serve more first-generation college 
students. For example, he said, some of those college-age people may not
 want to move to Manhattan as a freshman. They may prefer attending a 
community college or enrolling in online courses through Kansas State 
before finishing a degree in Manhattan, he said.

He said Kansas State had to consider whether students preferred a 
12-month academic schedule rather than the typical nine-month course 
schedule requiring four or five years to complete a degree.

“What about the 45-year-old that works for Cargill that would like to elevate their career in data analytics?” he said. “How can we spur research innovation that attracts industry to want to come so that we have more jobs in the state and keep more students in the state relative to extension&nbsp;and engagement?”

He’s
 also an advocate of experiential learning whether that involved milking
 dairy cows, processing cheese, engaging in horticulture or any of 
hundreds of other avenues for personal enrichment.

“If I had my way, and I’m moving in that direction, I would have every single student have some kind of&nbsp;hands-on learning experience, whether it’s an internship, whether it’s an international experience, or whether it’s an undergraduate research program. That hands-on experience helps&nbsp;enable them to understand what they actually want to be in life. It also gives them a great jump up in the job market.”

purple-and-white chair in Call Hall to recite contents of his favorite 
ice cream.It is cherry brick road — at least until a new favorite creation 
emerges from the dairy science lab at Kansas State University. The 
current preference was crafted while he was agriculture dean at North 
Carolina State University. The four key ingredients: chocolate ice 
cream, marshmallows, chocolate chunks and Michigan cherries.“The two chocolates were my wife’s and daughter’s. My son was the 
marshmallow. I was cherries,” said Linton, who just completed his rookie
 year as Kansas State president. “We used to say, ‘Follow the cherry 
brick road.’ It was the No. 2 seller at N.C. State.”The university educator and economic visionary in Linton also 
appreciated the campus dairy bar, which also sells flour, meat and dairy
 goods produced nearby, was situated in the middle of a planned $125 
million infrastructure construction and renovation project aimed at 
elevating reach of the College of Agriculture.Linton said the blend of state and private funding would highlight 
Kansas State’s new interdisciplinary approach to attracting students, 
building a workforce, supporting the economy, expanding next-generation 
research and working closer with private industry. Kansas State raised 
more than $82 million in private donations to qualify for the maximum 
3:1 match from the state of $25 million.A supplemental $25 million appropriation from state lawmakers brought
 to $125 million the total available for development of a new Global 
Center for Food and Grain Innovation, Agronomy Research Center, Agronomy
 Innovation Center and Livestock Competition Arena. The project, part 
demolition and part construction, was expected to start this summer and 
be wrapped up in late 2026.“It’s just amazing how the industry stepped up to be able to support 
this effort,” Linton said on the Kansas Reflector podcast. “It’s all 
about bringing different disciplines together&nbsp;to be able to solve the grand global challenges of agriculture. Let’s take water as an example. You need to have agronomists. You need to have soil scientists. You need to have geologists. You might need to have plant scientists. the nation’s first operational land-grant university — a distinction 
held since 1863. The core function of a land-grant university has been 
to use research-based information to improve the quality of life for all
 Kansans, he said. That’s often recognized by Kansas State’s operation 
of the agricultural extension service.“It’s the university for the people, for the people of the state,” the president said. “What makes us different from any other university here in Kansas, is that we’re present every single day improving lives&nbsp;and changing communities in all 105 counties.”Kansas State’s goal for promoting prosperity in Kansas includes 
creation of 3,000 jobs and addition of $3 billion to the state’s 
economy.Linton was named the 15th president of Kansas State in December 2021,
 and displayed his new purple socks during the initial news conference. 
He was agriculture dean at N.C. State from 2012 to 2022, food science 
department chairman at Ohio State university from 2011 to 2012 and a 
food science professor at Purdue University from 1994 to 2011. He holds a
 bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in food science and a 
doctorate in food science from Virginia Tech University.He began his presidential duties in Manhattan in February 2022, and 
has made his presence felt by visiting dozens of counties during the 
past year.“It’s about celebrating the partnerships that we already have in place,” Linton said. “It’s about thinking about new partnerships that could be created. And, it’s also about selling the amazing student experience that we have at Kansas State&nbsp;to prospective parents&nbsp;and students that may want to go into higher education. Ninety-five percent of success in higher education&nbsp;is building relationships and establishing trust.”<figure>

 </figure><h2>Thinking differently</h2>Linton said it was no secret Kansas State’s enrollment slid from more
 than 24,000 in 2014 to less than 20,000 last fall, and stabilizing and 
expanding student enrollment remained one of his top administrative 
priorities.“Declining enrollment is a big issue and challenge for all land-grants. And, at Kansas State, it’s been our biggest challenge over the last eight years,” he said. “We&nbsp;have to adapt and think differently about changing demographics. And we need to have a balance of in-state students&nbsp;and out-of-state students in order to be able to fulfill the operational needs of the university.”He said the expanding Hispanic population in southwest Kansas meant 
Kansas State had to consider how to serve more first-generation college 
students. For example, he said, some of those college-age people may not
 want to move to Manhattan as a freshman. They may prefer attending a 
community college or enrolling in online courses through Kansas State 
before finishing a degree in Manhattan, he said.He said Kansas State had to consider whether students preferred a 
12-month academic schedule rather than the typical nine-month course 
schedule requiring four or five years to complete a degree.“What about the 45-year-old that works for Cargill that would like to elevate their career in data analytics?” he said. “How can we spur research innovation that attracts industry to want to come so that we have more jobs in the state and keep more students in the state relative to extension&nbsp;and engagement?”He’s
 also an advocate of experiential learning whether that involved milking
 dairy cows, processing cheese, engaging in horticulture or any of 
hundreds of other avenues for personal enrichment.“If I had my way, and I’m moving in that direction, I would have every single student have some kind of&nbsp;hands-on learning experience, whether it’s an internship, whether it’s an international experience, or whether it’s an undergraduate research program. That hands-on experience helps&nbsp;enable them to understand what they actually want to be in life. It also gives them a great jump up in the job market.”

K-State president reimagining land-grant mission one scoop at a time

CONCORDIA
 - Cloud County Community College will be offering adult education and 
GED classes beginning on&nbsp; March 27 in Concordia and Junction City.

The
 Adult Education program at CCCC offers an adult learning atmosphere to 
gain skills necessary for success at home and in the workplace. The 
classes are open to individuals 16 and older who are not enrolled in 
school. Basic skills and diploma preparation classes are offered 
afternoons and evenings in Concordia, and mornings, afternoons, and 
evenings in Junction City to accommodate working adults’ schedules. 
Classes are small with both classroom and computer instruction.

Those
 who attend can also improve on basic skills in everyday reading, math 
and English, as well as learn employability skills while earning 
WorkReady Credentials. Computer skills are also a part of the courses, 
where students can gain basic Microsoft Word and Internet skills, and 
also earn technology certificates.

GED test preparation 
instruction is also available at both locations, and the Geary County 
campus will now offer English as a second language classes. The centers 
are located at CCCC’s Concordia campus and at the Geary County campus in
 Junction. All students must attend orientation before enrolling in 
classes. Students are to call for an orientation appointment. For both 
locations, orientation appointments can be made for March 21 and 22. 
Registration for orientation is due by March 20. The first day of 
classes at both locations is March 27.

RILEY COUNTY - Just after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th, Riley County dispatchers received 9-1-1 calls from concerned residents on Deep Creek Road notifying them of a grassfire, which had gotten out of control, was threatening structures and outbuildings.

According to Riley County Fire District #1, a&nbsp;total of nearly 30 firefighters responded on 14 apparatus, with mutual aid from 3 brush truck units and personnel from Wabaunsee County Fire District #8 and 1 brush truck unit and personnel from Manhattan Fire Department.  

The fire started as a permitted outdoor burn, which ended up burning more than 300 acres of grassland.

“This was a fast-moving fire that threatened multiple homes,” said RCFD#1 Deputy Fire Chief John Martens. “We could have seen millions of dollars in damage without the aid of volunteer firefighters and mutual aid crews. It could have been truly devastating for the community.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Last year we had several major wildfires in Riley County and many across the state. Much of our landscape is fuel rich, very dry, and ready to burn with high intensity, and we ask people to stay vigilant this season," said Martens. "If you’re conducting a burn, make sure you have enough people and equipment to control the fire. If you see an unattended fire or suspect an out-of-control fire in your neighborhood, call 9-1-1 right away,” said Riley County Emergency Management Director and Fire Chief Russel Stukey.&nbsp;

Procedures for controlled burns include the following:&nbsp;

"Conducting an outdoor burn is a major responsibility and the fire must be monitored until completely extinguished or adequately contained. Fire can get out of control quickly and can be active for several days or even longer in certain circumstances. The consequences of an out-of-control fire can be disastrous,” said Stukey.&nbsp; The first step in the process to conduct an outdoor burn is to contact Riley County Emergency Management 785-537-6333 to apply for a burn permit. Staff will share advice and information for conducting the burn safely.

Dangerous, damaging storms can catch motorists on the roads, so AAA Kansas urges drivers and their passengers to be prepared and take appropriate safety precautions should they encounter severe weather while traveling in a vehicle.

"Storms are common throughout the spring and summer, so chances are, drivers will face storm-related challenges while in their vehicles," said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. "A vehicle can either be very dangerous or a place of safety, depending on the weather conditions. The key is being prepared for severe weather and reacting the right way to what what Mother Nature throws at you."

Heavy rain and flooding Heavy downpours make it difficult to see while driving. AAA Kansas recommends regularly changing windshield wiper blades to keep drivers’ views as clear as possible. If visibility is severely limited during heavy rain, drivers should reduce their speed and if they can safely do so, pull off the road out of traffic lanes, turn on flashing hazard lights, and wait until the rain lightens.

Drivers should be reminded that it’s Kansas law that if windshield wipers are on, headlights should be as well. Headlights can help divers see better but also allow their vehicle to be seen by other drivers.

Pooling water on roadways can cause hydroplaning and loss of vehicle control, so motorists should reduce their speeds during rainy conditions. Roadways completely covered by water are a particular danger.

“Avoid driving into floodwater,” warned Steward. “Flooding causes more deaths than any other storm-related event, and many of those deaths occur in vehicles. As little as 12 inches of moving water can sweep most vehicles off the road. The slogan ‘Turn around, don’t drown’ is an important one to remember and follow.”

Hail Hailstorms hit with little warning and usually only last for about five minutes, but hailstones – frozen pellets of rain – can cause major damage in that short period of time.

There were more than 4,400 major hailstorms in the United States in 2022, with 289 – fourth most in the nation – occurring in Kansas, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Most hailstones are about the size of a pea or marble, but they can get as large as a softball in a severe storm.

“Hail of most any size can dent your car, and larger stones can smash your windows,” said Gary Tomes, Regional Insurance Manager for AAA Kansas. “And this is not an uncommon occurrence in Kansas. Fortunately, hail damage to a vehicle is covered by your comprehensive auto insurance policy, which covers physical damage to your vehicle not caused by a collision.”

To protect your car from hail storms, park your car in a covered spot whenever possible.

If you’re in your car when a hailstorm hits and see a safe place close by, such as a highway overpass or gas station or bank awning, drive to it as soon as you can. If no shelter is available and hail becomes large enough to cause damage, stop driving and pull off the road completely. Move away from car windows and cover your head with your arms and hands to protect yourself from any breaking glass.

If you are caught outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a hard-topped vehicle, or a low area, such as a tunnel. If you are already in your car when a lightning storm begins, stay in the vehicle for shelter, but steer clear of fences, isolated trees, telephone poles, power lines and pipelines.

Lightning-caused damage to a vehicle is typically covered under the comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy, said AAA Kansas Insurance’s Tomes.

Thunderstorms can sometimes have other impacts to vehicles, including:

●Damage caused by falling trees due to high winds. This kind of damage is typically covered by standard auto insurance policies. However, if the tree was known to be weak before the storm, the damage may not be covered.

●A wildfire that results from a lightning storm can cause damage to cars. Insurance coverage for wildfire, even if caused by lightning, is included in the comprehensive coverage of an auto insurance policy.

Tornadoes NOAA reports that the United States is the most tornado-prone country in the world, with more than 1,000 tornadoes touching down each year.

There were 1,331 documented tornadoes in the United States – 68 in Kansas – in 2022.

Tornado warnings mean danger is imminent. If a tornado is sighted, move to the safest place possible.

“If you are in your car and a tornado is close, abandon the vehicle and seek shelter in a storm shelter or sturdy structure,” said Steward. “As a last resort, if no structure is nearby, take shelter in your vehicle – seatbelt buckled; duck down below windows; cover up with a blanket to protect you from glass/debris; and protect your head with your arms.”

Also when taking cover from a tornado, stay away from trees, signs or cars/machinery and avoid seeking shelter where they could fall on or blow over onto you. Most tornadoes travel southwest to northeast, so take that into account when taking shelter.

Finally, never seek shelter from a tornado under a highway overpass or bridge, as tornadic winds can be made stronger and create a wind-tunnel effect, putting you in danger of being swept away or killed or injured by flying debris.

Emergency kit AAA recommends that motorists create a spring/summer severe weather emergency kit to carry in their cars. The kit should include items such as nonperishable food/snacks and water, tool kit, flashlight, hand-crank or battery-powered radio, extra batteries, cell phone and charger, first-aid supplies, flares or reflectors, rain coat or poncho, a towel or blanket, and rain boots or an extra pair of shoes.

AAA: In your car when severe weather strikes? Tips for staying safe

The&nbsp;Geary Community Healthcare Foundation&nbsp;and R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation have each donated $7,500 to the Cloud County Community College Geary County Campus to support the nursing program.

“All three organizations believe in the same goals, which is to provide career and technical training for future professionals, and support the needs of workforce development within Geary County, Junction City and our surrounding service area,” said Cloud County Director of Workforce Development and Outreach Kelly Cook.

Cloud County expanded its nursing program to the Geary County campus last year, and the first class began in January 2022. Those students will complete the program as the first Geary County Campus nursing class in May.

Those students will complete the program as the first Geary County Campus nursing class in May.

receive. The process has a few steps, but it simply starts with an 
informal meeting with the Appraiser's Office. At the meeting, the county
 provides information detailing the characteristics of the property, 
market trends and subsequent valuation.

An
 appeal must be filed within 30 days of the postmark on the notice. You 
can schedule a meeting with the Appraiser's Office by calling 
785-238-4407 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Overall
 valuations increased by about 10 percent in Geary County this year with
 residential property valuations typically increasing between 11 and 14 
percent and commercial being between 3 and 7 percent.

JUNCTION CITY - American Red Cross volunteers and partners will participate in the 'Sound the Alarm' event, on Saturday, March 11th.

'Sound the Alarm' will bring volunteers together to install free smoke alarms in Junction City.

Volunteers can register in person on March 11th, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Vertical Church, located at 339 W. 18th Street.

Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death due to home fires in half.

🏀JCHS: Boys BBall team is headed to 6A State Tourney

DICKINSON COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a chase on Interstate 70.

Just after noon Thursday, a sheriff's deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop with a 2021 Toyota passenger car for traffic infractions on Interstate 70 in Dickinson County, according to Sheriff Jerry Davis.

The Toyota accelerated rapidly in an attempt to flee and the deputy initiated a pursuit. The Toyota swerved toward patrol vehicles during the pursuit and then exited Interstate 70 and went south on Jeep Road. 

The Toyota attempted to turn onto a gravel driveway in the 2000 block of Jeep Road but crashed into the ditch and then proceeded to drive into a field. 

The vehicle eventually came to a stop and the male driver later identified as 37-year-old Joel Edward Hayes of Colorado Springs, Colo., exited the vehicle and ran but was apprehended after a short distance.

&nbsp;A passenger in the vehicle identified as 29-year-old Brenna Alison Fitzgerald of Peyton, Colo., was taken into custody and transported to the Abilene hospital due to injuries received when the Toyota traveled through the ditch.&nbsp;

Further investigation resulted in the recovery of numerous stolen tools from Colorado Springs, two firearms, more than 9,000 counterfeit oxycodone pills believed to contain fentanyl, 1.4 lbs of methamphetamine, 84 grams of heroin, 34 grams of marijuana, and numerous items of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies booked Hayes into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of flee or attempt to elude law enforcement, possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute opioids, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of stolen property, criminal damage to property, and aggravated assault on a Law Enforcement Office. Hayes was also arrested on a warrant that was issued in El Paso County, Colorado for fail to appear on drug and weapon related charges.

After her treatment at the hospital, Fitzgerald was booked into the Dickinson County jail on requested charges of possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute opioids, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a weapon, possession of stolen property.

Five music students, inluding two from Junction City, were awared a total of  $2,500  in scholarship money Saturday at the General Federated Women's Clubs of Kansas Music Auditions at the First Baptist Church in Junction City.

The students each receiving $500 scholarships were Kora Muniz-Lorenzo and Daphne Brown, Junction City, KS, vocal music; Jeremiah Young, Minneapolis, KS, piano; Rebekah Pickering, Manhattan, KS , Cello; and Scarlett Pfister, Hutchinson, KS, Piccolo.

According to GFWC State Music Chair Florence Whitebread the auditions were started in 1925 by Mrs. J. Abbie Clark Hogan, a local Junction City violinist and member of the Junction City Ladies Reading Club. She was also a noted violinist over Europe and the United States and wanted to recognize and promote local music students, Whitebread said.

Monday kicks off Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Kansas.

The week is scheduled to include a statewide tornado drill at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

In 2022, 56 tornadoes were recorded in Kansas, according to information from the National Weather Service. That number was five below the 1950-2022 average of 61, 29 below the 30-year average of 85, and 11 below the 10-year average of 67, yet higher than 2021 and 2020 combined.

According to the weather service, the longest tracking tornado was an EF1 tornado that was on the ground for 21.76 miles in Dickinson and Morris counties on April 29. The strongest tornado, an EF3, also was recorded on April 29 in Sedgwick and Butler counties. 

In fact, 14 tornadoes were recorded on April 29, the most prolific tornado-producing day in 2022 for Kansas. June saw the most tornadoes - 22 - for one month in 2022, and Kansas had 17 days in 2020 with at least one tornado. 

Thomas County in northwest Kansas holds the record for most 2022 tornadoes in one county: eight.

The length of the 2022 tornado season in Kansas was 154 days, from March 29 to Aug. 29.

While the bulk of spring severe and tornadic weather is still ahead of us this year, Kansas has already seen tornadoes in 2023.

Kansas Severe Weather Preparedness Week begins Monday

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another theft of a firearm from an unlocked vehicle.

Just after 2p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for theft in the 700 block of Pottawatomie Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 31-year-old man reported his Rock Island 1911 handgun was stolen from his unlocked car. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $575.&nbsp;

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

The daytime highs will be in the low- to upper-40s through the work week.
