In my world, snow means picturesque landscapes coated in white, the fun of sledding, tubing, downhill skiing and snowmobile rides, and if you are lucky — a snow day. My farm friends might roll their eyes and say, what about chores. On my family’s dairy farm our cows were safe and warm in the barn, and we didn’t have to break ice or dig them out of the snow. We only had issues if temperatures were extremely low for a long enough time that the barn cleaner froze up. Those were not fun days. Since snow is a much rarer treat in Kansas, helping with livestock and navigating drifts on snowy days doesn’t really bother me. Plus, the snow never seems to last longer than a day or two so it melts before my excitement wears off. You might think it is too early to be wishing for snow but there are chances in the forecast, and I am filled with anticipation. I dream of fluffy floating flakes that fall peacefully as the sound is absorbed and the countryside is blanketed in white. That may be a bit of wishful thinking since Kansas snow often seems like it is right out of the blizzard from the Claymation classic “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The drier, drifting snow that whips across the Kansas plains is exactly where I imagine the Abominable Snowman. Even if it isn’t the picture perfectness of my dreams, snow is needed. This year’s drought conditions have ensured that pretty much all farmers are excited about any precipitation regardless of form. The unexpected break from our busy lives can be a blessing too as we pause our daily routines and postpone plans. Snow days are a special kind of boost to moral because they often include spending time with our loved ones and doing all the little things that we never have time for otherwise. On days when the world shut down, my family often had a blast and made lasting memories. In my younger years, snow days were spent making forts with my brothers. As I grew older, my dad would take us out for a snowmobile ride. Mom was ready with snacks to warm us up while watching movies as a family. Snow days have brought me so much joy because they are almost always spent with family. In the aftermath of the pandemic there has been debate about whether or not remote work and school means the end of snow days. I have been heartened to see that many educators fighting to keep snow days. There is great value in disrupted schedules making time for joy and togetherness. Today when I end up canceling plans because of snow, it usually allows me to spend more time helping on the farm. Checking on livestock and making the rounds on the farm don’t seem like work when you are with your favorite people and have nowhere else to be. Quality time working is just as fulfilling as play. If we are lucky enough and get great snowfalls this winter, remember not to spend too much time worrying about canceled plans or the work that is looming. Instead, I hope you will join me in embracing snow for the beauty, the moisture and the moments of togetherness.

It was reported an unknown male suspect poured gasoline on a car and lit it on fire.&nbsp; Manhattan Fire Department responded to the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished.

RCPD: Suspect poured gas on car, lit it on fire

This Sunday, Nov. 20, the former Walla Walla Elementary School in Geary County will be remembered during a reunion. The school, founded in the 1870s served students until it closed in 1962. The reunion will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Plaza City Building.

Karen Erichsen said the school was located northwest of Junction City. According to Ella Moloney it was a one-room school house with one teacher for eight grades.&nbsp;June 17, 1872 students first met in a home and decided to organize the school. The building was first built in 1874.

Erichsen said she believes that there are a lot of former Walla Walla school students in the community. Moloney is hoping the publicity about the reunion will help attract those people to attend.&nbsp;

Former students will remember Walla Walla Elementary School

Around 6:15 pm Saturday evening, Riley County Police officers responded to the report of a crash near the intersection of North Seth Child Road and Top of the World.

When they arrived on the scene, officers found a 2006 GMC Canyon, driven by 64-year-old Robert Jandera, of Houston, TX, had crossed over the center line while traveling north on Seth Child Road.

Twenty-year-old Brenda Flores, of Junction City, who was traveling southbound on Seth Child Road in a 2009 Toyota Camry, had to swerve into the northbound lane to attempt to avoid the GMC Canyon.

The GMC Canyon the reentered the northbound lane, colliding with the Camry, before coming to a stop.

Riley County EMS treated Flores for minor injuries at the scene and was released.

Jandera was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan for treatment of injuries before being <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/e8f08fc5-dd5b-4f08-86b2-5da17b1a3889">arrested by the Riley County Police Department for DUI and aggravated battery</a>.

Jandera was issued a total bond of $6,000 and has bonded out from the Riley County Jail.

Nate Butler, Junction City, is preparing to represent the 68th District in the Kansas House of Representatives. Based on the results of last Tuesday's election he was the clear front runner.&nbsp;

Butler wants to work reduce inflation. "We've got to do something to help offset some of the costs. I'm going to a meeting next week with the agricultural side of the House to learn about that. "Butler noted that farmers are struggling with the cost of fuel and fertilizer. "I'm anxious to learn about that and see if I can bring that up to the House a little bit more, be a little bit more educated on it."

Butler has a background with the military. "One of the committees I've asked to be on is Veterans Affairs. " He is hoping to set up some tours of Fort Riley. Many of the legislators haven't been there for a long time.

The 68th District includes portions of Geary, Morris and Riley counties.

Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed that a two vehicle crash at 3 a.m. Saturday resulted in the death of two people, John Wagnaar III, 34, Manhattan and Morgan L. Taylor, 31, Colorado Springs, CO. The accident occurred on I-70 eastbound, nine miles southeast of Manhattan.

According to the Highway Patrol a vehicle driven by Wagnaar was traveling West in the Eastbound passing lane of I-70. The vehicle driven by Taylor was traveling east in the eastbound passing lane of I-70. Both vehicles collided head on. Wagnaar's Ford F-150 rolled into the median and caught fire. Taylor's Honda Civic came to rest partially on the North shoulder of the Eastbound lanes.

Wagnaar and Taylor were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp;Johnson Cremations, Funerals and Receptions. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

CHICAGO, IL – U.S. Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division (1ID) were distinguished guests in a historic Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony at Soldier Field on Friday.

To honor this day, Soldiers currently serving in America's oldest active duty Division attended the event to commemorate the long history between the unit and the city of Chicago.

"Veterans Day is a day when we recognize those who have served honorably in uniform and pay tribute to the sacrifices they have made for this country," said acting 1st Infantry Division Command Sgt. Maj. Albert Serrano. "Ceremonies like this not only bond 1ID Soldiers past and present but celebrate those who have served in uniform."

1ID and Chicago have a long and deeply rooted connected history. Cantigny Park, the former estate of Col. Robert R. McCormick, is home to the First Division Museum, an institution dedicated to the history of the "Big Red One." For more than 60 years, the park has provided fascinating insights about America's 1st Division past and present.

"Veterans Day recognizes those who have served honorably in uniform," said Brig. Gen. Rodney Boyd, Assistant Adjutant General for the Illinois National Guard. "Think about all the veterans who set aside their differences to be part of the military team”

Over three dozen Soldiers from the Division, each branch of the United States military, and local civic leaders took part in the ceremony, which took place in front of "American Doughboy" by Ernest Moore Viquesney. Doughboy was an informal term for a member of the United States Army or Marine Corps, primarily used to refer to members of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.

"Veterans Day is our sacred opportunity to remember and thank veterans of past and present for proudly serving our country," said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. "As we honor their bravery and sacrifice, we must demonstrate our gratitude to veterans and their families by ensuring they come home to a city that cares for them and fights for their happiness and prosperity in return."

The Division marked its return to the city amid some elements deployed forward to areas of Eastern Europe, supporting the United States European Command Enhanced deterrence initiative.

"As someone who grew up here, it's heart-warming to&nbsp; witness this while also seeing Soldiers from across the Division take part in this ceremony is such a monumental and special occasion for me."

Jordan McCann, Chamber of Commerce Member Relations Director, said they're thinking perhaps a 1950's, 1960's kind of theme of what you may portray as a classic Christmas. "We are in partnership with Main Street on this and they are doing a classic Christmas theme, and we are partnering with them to flow into 10 Days of Christmas so we wanted it to be a cohesive event."

The parade will begin at the old Junction City High School parking lot area, proceed down Eisenhower, turn east onto 6th Street to Washington Street, and then north for a short distance on Washington. It will be broadcast on 107.9 FM / 1420 KJCK AM.

Members of the Geary County Veterans Alliance will not host&nbsp; the traditional Veterans Day ceremony at the C.L. Hoover Opera House on&nbsp; Friday. It has proven difficult to find a speaker for the event. So, Veterans Alliance representative Brenda Boyd said instead there will be a small get-together in Heritage Park. "We're going to do a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and maybe sing the National Anthem this year.

Boyd noted that trying to put together a program since the pandemic began has been hard.

The ceremony in the park will begin at 11 a.m. It is open to the public.

Veterans Alliance plans a scaled down ceremony

Retired 1SG Randi Hamden received a Quilt of Valor in Junction City on Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Although born in Adrian, Michigan, Randi grew up in Junction City, where she graduated from Junction City High School in 1984.&nbsp; Immediately after graduation, Randi joined the United States Army as a mechanic.&nbsp; She served in various stateside and overseas locations to include Fort Carson, where she was a member of the US Olympic Judo Team; Fort Jackson, where she served as a Drill Sergeant, Fort Riley, Honduras, and Korea.&nbsp; She was also deployed to Kuwait during 9/11 and completed two combat tours to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2006.&nbsp; 

After 23 years of active federal service, Randi retired as a First Sergeant and began working as an Army Civilian.&nbsp; She currently works as an Operations Chief for the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security within the United States Army Garrison – Fort Riley.

The Quilt of Valor was presented at the Ladies Reading Club in Junction City.

Quilt of Valor presentation occurs in Junction City

TOPEKA (AP) —The Kansas State Board of Education on Thursday recommended that the state's public school districts eliminate Native American mascots and branding to reduce their harmful impacts on students.

The board approved a motion making a “strong recommendation” that Kansas public K-12 nontribal schools retire Native American-themed mascots and branding as soon as possible but within the next three to five years at the latest.

Supporters stressed the board's action was only a recommendation and the final decision on mascots was left to local school boards, adding the decision would not impact districts' accreditation. They said the vote fits with the board's policies on discouraging bullying and encouraging equity, inclusion and justice for all students.

The intent of the motion, supporters said, was to prompt discussions about the racist aspects of the mascots and their negative impact on Native American students.

Board member Melanie Haas said the motion lays the groundwork for those conversations.

“There are districts that aren’t having these conversations, or that are having a hard time with those discussions," Haas said. "So when we take a leadership role at the state level and say this is something you should look at, I think that’s really important messaging that some of those districts need.”

Michelle Dombrosky, the only board member to oppose the motion, said it wasn't a state board issue. She suggested supporters should work to build relationships with local boards and school patrons to promote education about the mascots and branding, which could take several years.

The vote came after a report from an advisory group that included representatives from the four federally recognized tribes in Kansas — the Kickapoo, Sac &amp; Fox, Iowa and Prairie Band Potawatomi.

The report said more than 10,000 American Indian/Alaska Native students attend public schools in Kansas. Studies have shown the racist connotations of Native American mascots harm the students' self esteem and limit how they see their futures, according to the report.

"These practices teach narrow-minded stereotypes that represent American Indians as exotic, warlike people who are stuck-in-the-past, making it difficult for people to understand how American Indians exist in contemporary ways,” the report said.

An exact number of Kansas schools that have Native American mascots was not provided. The Indian Leader, a newspaper at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, reported in 2020 that about 33 Kansas schools had mascots, such as Indians, Chieftans and Braves.

That number has declined as some districts, including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c9132f9360a0b2a27474ecc1bf9fbfac">Atchison</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-kansas-7f7b5551a97c69594f96a67f23cd5d4d">Shawnee Mission</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/3cab1dc7ae7d37f0bb50cd1b05840b0b">Wichita</a>&nbsp;have dropped American Indian mascots in recent years.

That advisory group's report also recommended that state and local districts' education policies be reviewed to determine how using American Indian-themed mascots and branding conflicts with student learning and well-being, including in schools that don't have such mascots.

The group also suggested a support network be created to help schools transition away from mascots and explore funding opportunities to help pay the cost of adopting new mascots and branding.

Alex Red Corn, an assistant professor of educational leadership at Kansas State University who was a member of the advisory board, acknowledged that efforts by other entities, such as the NCAA, to pass similar recommendations have met with mixed results.

But he said such motions can start discussions that are productive over time.

“This is the start of the dialogue where people start to actually learn about these things,” Red Corn said. "Once people start learning and peeling back the labels, that's when the actual change starts to occur.”

Due to cost increases with waste disposal, customers of the Geary County Transfer Station will see a price increase effective January 1, 2023. The new tipping fee rate will be $64.00 per ton. The minimum fee for 500 pounds or less will increase to $16.00.

The cost for commercial tree trimming companies for the disposal of trees and brush will remain the same at $15.00 per ton. One ton minimum.

Price is going up at the Transfer Station

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly announced Thursday the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission has selected Traci Brimhall as the 2023-2026 Poet Laureate of Kansas. Brimhall, a professor and director of creative writing at Kansas State University, will become the state’s eighth Poet Laureate when her four-year term begins on January 1.&nbsp;

“Supporting and celebrating poetry is essential to preserving our state’s rich history for future generations,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“That’s why I’m glad Traci will be our next Kansas Poet Laureate. Her passion and introspection make her the perfect advocate for poetry and the arts.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Poet Laureate of Kansas is an honorary position of the KCAIC that promotes the arts, especially the reading and writing of poetry, for all Kansans. The program was established in 2004.&nbsp;

As the new Poet Laureate of Kansas, Brimhall will conduct public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations that serve communities across the state. Her plans for the laureateship will focus on connecting with Kansans through the shared experience of language, Kansas’ agricultural roots, and food.&nbsp;

“I am delighted to serve Kansas as the next Poet Laureate,” Brimhall said. “I love connecting with others and building community, and I can’t wait for the next few years of celebrating creativity in the Sunflower State.”&nbsp;

“The arts not only mold the quality of life in Kansas communities but color the palette of both local and state economies,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Traci Brimhall’s exceptional talent and her willingness to share it with the people of Kansas is a wonderful gift.”&nbsp;

Brimhall is the author of four poetry collections, most recently&nbsp;Come the Slumberless to the Land of Nod&nbsp;(Copper Canyon Press). Her poems have appeared in publications including&nbsp;The New Yorker, Poetry, Orion,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Best American Poetry.&nbsp;She received the 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Poetry, among numerous other awards.&nbsp;

“The KCAIC is excited by Traci's passion for poetry as a way to strengthen Kansans’connections with each other,”&nbsp;said KCAIC Interim Director Kate Van&nbsp;Steenhuyse.&nbsp;“Through celebrating the diversity and bounty of our beautiful state, she will promote poetry as a vehicle for nourishment and engagement.”&nbsp;

 </figure>TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly announced Thursday the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission has selected Traci Brimhall as the 2023-2026 Poet Laureate of Kansas. Brimhall, a professor and director of creative writing at Kansas State University, will become the state’s eighth Poet Laureate when her four-year term begins on January 1.&nbsp;“Supporting and celebrating poetry is essential to preserving our state’s rich history for future generations,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“That’s why I’m glad Traci will be our next Kansas Poet Laureate. Her passion and introspection make her the perfect advocate for poetry and the arts.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The Poet Laureate of Kansas is an honorary position of the KCAIC that promotes the arts, especially the reading and writing of poetry, for all Kansans. The program was established in 2004.&nbsp;As the new Poet Laureate of Kansas, Brimhall will conduct public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations that serve communities across the state. Her plans for the laureateship will focus on connecting with Kansans through the shared experience of language, Kansas’ agricultural roots, and food.&nbsp;“I am delighted to serve Kansas as the next Poet Laureate,” Brimhall said. “I love connecting with others and building community, and I can’t wait for the next few years of celebrating creativity in the Sunflower State.”&nbsp;“The arts not only mold the quality of life in Kansas communities but color the palette of both local and state economies,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Traci Brimhall’s exceptional talent and her willingness to share it with the people of Kansas is a wonderful gift.”&nbsp;Brimhall is the author of four poetry collections, most recently&nbsp;Come the Slumberless to the Land of Nod&nbsp;(Copper Canyon Press). K-State professor named next Kansas Poet Laureate

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug distribution allegations.

Just after 8a.m. Monday, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Chevy Malibu, west of Mayetta, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

 The driver, Cory Dionne, 55, of Junction City, was arrested on requested charges of distribution of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 

Deputies arrested Heather Stephens, 48, of Emporia, on a Jackson County District Court warrant and for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, according to Morse.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Geary County Schools USD 475 has received a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support its student literacy initiative at the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City.

The grant is primarily being used to expand the book selection of the facility’s library to better meet the diverse needs of the students. The library is overseen by USD 475.

"The importance of libraries in juvenile detention centers cannot be overemphasized,” said Donna Shell, an instructor at the facility. “Books keep students mentally occupied and entertained instead of staring at concrete walls and making trouble.”

According to Shell, the link between literacy and juvenile incarceration is heavily documented. Regular testing at the facility has shown that most of the students in its Secure Care Center have reading deficits, some at four or more levels below their grade.

“Due to factors that cause the students to miss school—whether incarceration, skipping classes, or running away—their education is continually interrupted, and this magnifies the factors contributing to their high-risk status,” said Cathy Rankin, another instructor at the facility.

“Thanks to Dollar General, we can do a better job of addressing these issues in our facility,” said Shell. “The students love new books, and it is wonderful to see them getting excited and talking about the new selections this grant provides."

“Having a wide variety of books keeps them reading and, in turn, increasing their reading levels,” said Rankin.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides grant funding to support literacy and education initiatives serving individuals of all ages. The Foundation funds nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 15-mile radius of Dollar General stores in the states in which they operate.
