RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a hit-and-run that critically injured a man and asking the public for help with information.

Just after 9:30p.m. Saturday, police were called to the 4700 block of Skyway Drive in Riley County, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.

First responders found a 30-year-old man on the side of the road with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

The man was initially transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan and he was later transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of his injuries.

The man remains in critical condition, according to a report on Sunday from the RCPD.

Cheers for CASA scheduled this month in Junction City

RILEY COUNTY—A man died in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Saturday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Ford F150 driven by Brian J. Butts, 60, Bridgeton, Missouri, was westbound on Interstate 70 just before Tallgrass Road.

The pickup crossed the center median continued through the eastbound lanes into the South ditch, struck a concrete culvert, became airborne, landed on its front end and overturned.

Butts was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN - On Friday, February 10, 2023, John K. 'Jack' Vanier passed away at the age of 94.

From the Vanier family: To call Jack Vanier a founding father of a bygone rural Kansas culture would be three things at once. An understatement, a compliment and a chance for Jack to respond in his characteristic unassuming nature&nbsp;—&nbsp;accompanied by that brilliant smile&nbsp;—&nbsp;that he was just doing what came naturally. In his self-effacing, low-key way, it would also offer a golden opportunity for Jack to take issue with the&nbsp;"bygone"&nbsp;sentiment. Soft-spoken and successful. Kind and productive. Reliable and generous. If someone were to ask,&nbsp;"What does it mean to be called&nbsp;'the salt of the Earth?'"&nbsp;One would only need to spend a few minutes talking about Jack Vanier to get a deep and meaningful sense. Jack grew up on the bedrock of honesty. He came of age with a work ethic. Integrity drove his success in business. With his bride, Donna, he raised a family on faith. Jack Vanier did not struggle with a greater cosmic meaning of why he was here, and that's what made him such a good husband, father and grandfather, rancher and businessman. That's what made him such a good friend. He loved his neighbor and walked humbly. His sense of humor put you at ease as soon as you encountered him. Jack Vanier was fun to be around. Born in Salina, Kansas,&nbsp;to John J.&nbsp;"J.J."&nbsp;and Lesta Vanier,&nbsp;Jack operated the CK Ranch in Brookville, Kansas&nbsp;—&nbsp;once the largest producer of purebred Hereford cattle in the country. The family also held ranching interests in Wyoming, Colorado and Oklahoma. Jack offered his gift of service and leadership capacity to a host of organizations, including the American Hereford Association, the Kansas Livestock Association, the Boards of Directors of the National Cattlemen's Association and Archer Daniels Midland&nbsp;— roles in which he provided wisdom and insight, but mostly what he would have described as common sense.&nbsp; And while much has changed in Kansas and the world during Jack Vanier's time on this planet, his passing is not the end of an era. Jack's legacy is with us today. You see it in Mary's compassion for her community, in Marty's brilliant smile and intellect, in the life lessons John learned from his father. In Jack's grandchildren, you don't have to look very far to see a direct reflection of his light and love.&nbsp; You see it in the promise of entire generations touched by Jack's benevolence through scholarship, mentorship, and stewardship. Jack lives on in the thoughts and memories found uppermost in the minds and the warm feelings which lie deep in the hearts of all who encountered him. When we think of Jack Vanier, it is what comes naturally. His contributions to agriculture, the livestock industry, to Kansas State University and to all the organizations and people he touched are many and significant. But it was by living his life the way he did that marks the profound contribution Jack Vanier made to our greater society, the rural culture and a way of life worth preserving, that will stand out. Not because he wanted it to, but because he didn't. Preceded in death by his wife, Donna Lindsey Vanier, Jack is survived by sister Joyce Hale and brother Jerry Vanier of Kansas City, daughter Mary Vanier of Manhattan, daughter Dr. Marty Vanier of Manhattan and her stepchildren Katie (Kevin) Buehler, Kirsten (Nathan) Beemer and Kathy Krause, and son John K. Vanier II of Salina, his daughters Lauren Vanier and Sarah (Ryan) Geiger, John’s wife, Kim, and children Pallie (Bryan) Swartz, Landon Koehn, Jess Koehn, and Ty Koehn, Jake Mooney and Norah Mooney. A funeral will be held&nbsp;at 1 p.m.&nbsp;Friday, March 3,&nbsp;at Christ Cathedral in Salina, Kansas. The family suggests memorial gifts to any of the following organizations: the Salina Community Foundation and the Meadowlark Hills Good Samaritan Fund in Manhattan. Memorials may be sent in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th Street, Salina, Kansas 67401. K-State leaders offered their condolences to the Vanier family. University President Richard Linton: "Jack was part of the very fabric of Kansas State University. His vision, leadership, advocacy and philanthropy for both Kansas agriculture and our great university goes unmatched. The Vanier family has built an incredible legacy with remarkable impact for so many, and Jack's vision laid that foundation. He will be greatly missed by so many, and our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time." Amy Button Renz, president and chief executive officer of the K-State Alumni Association: "Jack Vanier was everything a K-Stater should be. He was generous, quick-witted and had a strong desire to help others. When I joined the staff at the Alumni Association, Jack was a member of the Board of Directors. It was an honor to learn from him, and I was blessed with his lifelong friendship. Jack and Donna were avid supporters of many areas at K-State, including the Wildcat Statue at the K-State Alumni Center. The statue has become a K-State icon and tradition, and it would not have been possible without their generosity. My thoughts and prayers are with John, Marty, Mary and the entire Vanier family." A funeral will be held&nbsp;at 1 p.m.&nbsp;Friday, March 3,&nbsp;at Christ Cathedral in Salina, Kansas. One of the stops will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Manhattan Conference Center, 410 S. Third.

The meetings will give the Broadband Office a grassroots understanding of the current connectivity landscape throughout Kansas to develop an effective five-year strategic action plan and support statewide digital equity.

“Now more than ever, reliable broadband is necessary to support employment, lifelong learning, access to essential services and strong family relationships,”Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce&nbsp;David Toland said. “By listening to diverse communities across the state, we will be able to better address the specific challenges different areas face as we work toward Governor Kelly’s goal of getting every Kansan who wants access connected by 2030.”

The Office of Broadband officially kicked off its engagement process on January 19 at the inaugural Kansas Broadband Summit. Staff gathered input from invested communities and partners to ensure strategic engagement. The upcoming public meetings will allow Kansans from across the state the chance to discuss their experiences, needs and opportunities as it relates to high-speed access and development.

The office will hold events at 25 to 30 locations around the state. Special attention will be paid to groups and communities that historically have been disproportionately impacted by digital inequities. These groups include low-income households, aging populations, people with disabilities or language barriers, racial and ethnic minorities, rural inhabitants, incarcerated individuals, and veterans.

“Before funds are allocated for broadband support, states are tasked with creating a strategic, thoughtful approach to using the dollars they will receive to bring broadband to underserved communities,”&nbsp;said Jade Piros de Carvalho, Director of the Office of Broadband Development. “This listening tour will be foundational in the creation and strategic development of a planning document to connect and support all Kansans.”

Plans will be submitted to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) before funds are dispersed. All 50 U.S. states and six territories applied for planning grant funding from the Broadband, Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program and the Digital Equity Act program. Grant awards for all 56 eligible entities will be announced on a rolling basis.

The listening tours will consist of both onsite and virtual focus groups. Pancakes for Pawnee is an annual fundraiser benefiting Pawnee Mental Health. In its fifth year, this event raises money to help pay for mental health services for those who cannot afford them. 

The
 event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the west side Early 
Edition Restaurant located at 3210 Kimball Ave. from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Each 
meal consists of a large Early Edition pancake, sausage, and a 
color-changing cup that can be used to receive free refills of soda, 
tea, or coffee at any Early Edition Restaurant in Manhattan until next 
year’s event.

Fifth annual Pancakes for Pawnee set for Feb. 21

REPUBLIC COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Friday in Republic County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 GMC Terrain driven by Amber Cherney, 22, Cuba, Kansas, was southbound on 260 Road just north of Shady Road.

The driver swerved and the SUV entered the east ditch. It struck a field entrance, became airborne, landed on the south side of the field entrance and struck the field side embankment. 

The SUV spun 180 degrees, struck a barbed wire fence and came to rest up against the barbed wire fence on its wheels.

EMS transported Cherney to the Republic County Hospital in Belleville. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN — There was a time, Steve Maynard admits, when he was a shy, introverted kid. Then came summer camp.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“By highlighting my talents and knowledge, the (camp) staff brought me out of my shell and built up my confidence and self-esteem,” said Maynard, who in January was named executive director of Rock Springs Ranch south of Junction City.&nbsp;

Among other activities,&nbsp;<a href="https://rockspringsranch.org/">Rock Springs Ranch</a>, the state 4-H center,&nbsp;hosts thousands of 4-H youth for summer camp programs. On assuming his new post, Maynard said: “I will always strive to create a camp culture where building confidence and self-esteem is the normal experience for each camper and staff team member.”&nbsp;

Maynard said one of the things that attracted him to Rock Springs Ranch was that it offers programming based on the foundations of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;program -- head, heart, hands and health.&nbsp;

“These core values continued to withstand the test of time and challenge,” he said. “They are the pillars of the 4-H program and can be used as a sounding board to test new programs, coach campers and staff and help lead Rock Springs Ranch into the future.”&nbsp;

As part of the executive director role, Maynard will be overseeing all aspects of the facilities and programming, working with camp directors Jared and Letha Causby, K-State Research and Extension agents and others on programming and staffing needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maynard was most recently the facilities director at Asbury Hills Camp and Retreat Center/South Carolina Camps and Retreat Ministries in Greenville, South Carolina. He has more than 25 years of experience in the camping industry, serving as an executive leader at camps across the country.&nbsp;

“I am excited to have Steve join the Kansas 4-H team,” said Sarah Maass, the state leader for the Kansas 4-H program. “We look forward to his leadership at Rock Springs Ranch as we move Kansas 4-H forward together as a team in the field of positive youth development.”&nbsp;

Rock Springs Ranch, which has been in existence for nearly 80 years, is accredited by the American Camp Association.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“As the standards organization for camping, the American Camp Association accreditation ensures Rock Springs Ranch is operating with the highest standards in safety, training, program, facilities and food service,” Maynard said.&nbsp;

Studies by the American Camp Association have shown that this positive type of ‘risk taking’ carries over when guests leave camp.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Part of Maynard’s vision for Rock Springs Ranch is to provide a space where campers and adult retreat guests can explore new interests, gain independence, and master new skills in a safe non-judgemental setting. He said that the facilities at Rock Springs Ranch can meet the needs of a variety of groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I am excited to be joining the Kansas 4-H and Rock Springs Ranch family,” he said. “I look forward to working with the team and helping them achieve their goals, providing exceptional experiences for our campers and adult guests and filling summer camp and retreat calendars. MANHATTAN - The KSU Foundation has announced a private donation will fund the renovation of the former Campus Ecumenical Center into the new home for K-State's food pantry, Cats' Cupboard.

The new location will increase the pantry's size from just 800 square feet to 8,000 square feet, providing enhanced space to continue promoting student health, success and well-being for students facing food insecurity.

Additional improvements include better parking and visibility, along with improved accessibility, increased&nbsp;storage capacity, space for packaging bulk food items and pick-up orders, walk-in and reach-in coolers and freezers, and a loading dock that will allow for larger deliveries of donated food and supplies.

"Since 2017, Cats' Cupboard has served K-State with access to nutritious food and support from Fairchild Hall," said Shelly Williams, Morrison family director of Cats' Cupboard. "While we remain grateful for the space, we have outgrown it and are eager for the opportunities that come with this incredible upgrade. In addition to increased visibility and access, the new space offers gardening and educational opportunities; greater capacity to accept, store and repack bulk donations; and the ability to distribute frozen products. Cats' Cupboard aims to cultivate a transformational experience, where every Wildcat — no matter their background or circumstance — is confident in their ability to feed themselves and their households while obtaining a degree at Kansas State University."

The remodel of the new location is expected to be completed by August 2023 and was made possible by a donation from David and Tracy Lockton of Naples, Florida.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are asking the public for assistance in locating 54-year-old Patrick Paul Woodcox.

He is wanted for a Saline County District Court felony arrest warrant on charges&nbsp; of Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Battery, according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office. He had a previous conviction for aggravated robbery in Lyon County, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

 Woodcox was last known to live in the Abilene area. He is described as 5-foot- 10, 230 pounds with green eyes and brown hair.

The sheriff's department warned the public not to not attempt to apprehend him.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating an alleged arson fire at Manhattan High School have made an arrest.

Just after 10a.m. Thursday, police arrested 16-year-old Jason Lucas of Manhattan&nbsp;in the 2300 block of Oak Street&nbsp; after he was found in his vehicle in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

In addition to the drug allegations, police arrested Lucas on requested charges of aggravated arson in connection to a November 28,&nbsp; incident at Manhattan High School in the&nbsp;2100 block of Poyntz Avenue.&nbsp; It was reported he set a bathroom soap dispenser on fire during school hours.&nbsp;A teacher with a fire extinguisher  quickly put the fire out.  

Lucas was transported to the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City on the requested arson charge and&nbsp; for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of an electronic cigarette by a minor.

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations after a traffic stop on Interstate 70.

Just after 10a.m. Tuesday, a Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop with a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup for a traffic infraction on Interstate 70, according to Undersheriff Jeff Vaughan.

The deputy made contact with the driver of the vehicle identified as Darren James Denter, 49, out of Old Monroe, Missouri.

The deputy detected the strong odor of marijuana during the traffic stop which led to a search of the vehicle. The search revealed 182 pounds of marijuana, 49 pounds of THC wax, 1000 Psilocybin Mushroom candy bars, 11 pounds of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 550 pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes packaged for sale, and 128 pre-packaged four gram marijuana packages. The estimated street value is over $500,000.

The sheriff booked Denter into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute certain hallucinogenic and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Sheriff’s Office encouraged parents to talk to their children about accepting and consuming anything they don’t know the origin of as items such as chocolate bars and candy can be laced with illegal and harmful substances.

$500K worth of pot, mushroom candy seized on I-70

RILEY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting in Aggieville have arrested a second suspect.

Just before 2p.m. Tuesday, police arrested 27-year-old Edward Wright of Junction City on a Riley County District Court&nbsp; warrant for first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 These charges were brought by the Riley County Attorney's Office for Wright's involvement in the homicide of Joshua Wardi in February 5, 2022.

Just after 3a.m. on February 5, 2022, RCPD officers working in the police substation in Aggieville heard gunshots. The officers immediately responded in the direction of the gunfire that occurred outside a bar near 12th and Moro Street, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.  Officers found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid.

The victim was later identified as Wardi of Fort Riley. Preliminary information indicated that as the armed suspect fled, he turned the corner onto 12th Street. During the foot chase, one of the RCPD officers fired two rounds at the suspect, striking him in the leg, and causing him to stop part way down the block, between Moro Street and Laramie Street.

Officers secured the handgun and provided medical assistance. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

Wright remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $500,000. 

On Jan. 7, Junction City Police arrested 24-year-old Jordan Prather of Junction City for on a Riley County District Court warrant for the same charges as Wright.&nbsp; Prather also remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $500,000.&nbsp;

2nd Junction City man accused of killing in Aggieville

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://artsci.k-state.edu/">College of Arts and Sciences</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University has selected 31 new student ambassadors. Student ambassadors gain valuable leadership experience and are offered scholarship opportunities based on involvement.&nbsp; The College of Arts and Sciences student ambassadors aim to promote pride in and develop awareness of the college among prospective students, parents, alumni and the public. All students in the college are eligible to apply for the program. K-State College of Arts and Sciences announces student ambassadors

MANHATTAN — A new book from a Kansas State University 
trauma specialist explores the effects deployment and trauma can have on
 soldiers' relationships with partners and families using research from a
 long-term study with Kansas Army couples.

"Bulletproof Vows: Stories of Couples Navigating Military Deployments
 and Life's Battles" is the culmination of more than 30 years of trauma 
research by <a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/ahs/about/people/bnelson/">Briana Nelson Goff</a>,
 professor of applied human sciences in the K-State College of Health 
and Human Sciences. It tells the stories of eight post-9/11 Army couples
 stationed at either Fort Riley or Fort Leavenworth, both in Kansas, who
 were interviewed first in 2005 and again in 2015.

The book, which was initially titled "In Love and War: Stories of 
Couples Navigating Military Deployments and Life Battles," describes the
 experiences of the eight Army couples during the course of ten years — 
before, during and after deployments — and highlights the resilience of 
the couples and families.

"Everyone who has served — and anyone who loves someone who has 
served — knows that war changes people, whether overseas or back at 
home," said Nelson Goff. "These couples survived the deployments and 
navigated life's battles, forging bulletproof vows along their 
extraordinary journeys."

"Bulletproof Vows: Stories of Couples Navigating Military Deployments
 and Life's Battles" was published Jan. 16, 2023, through New Degree
