Geary County Historical Society will host the  monthly S.T.E.A.M. Saturday program this Saturday, November 12th from 1-3:30pm at the museum. This month's topic will be all about the golden era of small farms! 

Hands-On artifacts will be on display to test your knowledge of historic farming practices and visitors of all ages will be invited to create unique artwork and design corn keychains. 

Free popcorn will also be available during the event. Admission to STEAM Saturday is free and no RSVP is required.&nbsp;

S.T.E.A.M. Saturday is set for this weekend

Sherri Childs, Geary County Treasurer has announced that the 2022 tax statements will go out in the mail this week. Taxpayers that have their mortgage company escrow their tax will be sent a ‘copy’ of the bill for informational purposes.

The 1st half taxes are due December 20th, 2022. Taxpayers are encouraged to avoid waiting in line by mailing their taxes. If mailing your payment, they should be postmarked no later than the 20th. Anyone wishing to receive a receipt will need to indicate this by marking the appropriate box on the payment stub.

The treasurer’s office is responsible for the mailing and collection of the statements but, does not assess properties for valuation purposes.

When you receive your bill and you have questions regarding the assessment of the property, you can call the appraiser’s office at 785 238 4407.

If you sold your property after October 1st and received this tax bill, call the county clerk’s office at 785 238 3912.

Real Estate taxes may be paid in full or half by December 20th, 2022. Second half taxes are due by May 10, 2023. Postmark accepted on current payments.

Statutorily, at least half of the personal property tax is due December 20, 2022, if you fail to pay the first half, the full amount plus interest becomes due. Once you pay the first half, the 2nd half is due by May 10th, the same as real estate. No motor vehicle transactions can be processed for persons having delinquent personal property taxes.

Participants in the neighborhood revitalization program must have their taxes paid in full before a rebate check will be issued.

If a taxpayer does not receive a tax bill, please call 238-6021. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to ensure their taxes are paid. If you do not receive a tax bill or you have multiple properties, please bring pertinent information that enables us to locate the property you are paying on. Owners have options to pay. They can come into the office or pay online by going to the Kansas County Treasurers website at http://www.kansastreasurers.org/ or they can use the drop slot located at the entrance of the south door to the building at 200 E 8th Street. Taxpayers can use the following methods to pay for their taxes: Cash, Check, Money Order and Credit and Debit cards (those choosing to use this option are subject to a convenience fee charged by the company providing the service) Also, taxpayers will be given the opportunity to make monthly payments for real estate taxes. Interested persons should contact the office and ask for the “Payment Program.” This program helps ease the burden of the tax by spreading it over a period of months as opposed to either a half or full payment due late in December.

Just after 4p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 2000 block of Judson Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Dept. activity report.

 A 20-year-old man reported his Glock 34 with a red dot sight, Surefire X300U light, Tricon blacked-out iron sights and after-market trigger were stolen from his residence.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,400.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Monday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an Onyx Electric Motorbike driven by Erik S.&nbsp;Dedrickson,&nbsp; 31, Manhattan, was northbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard in northeast Manhattan and struck the side of a&nbsp;2012 Subaru Outback driven by Graden Marden, 70, Manhattan, who&nbsp;made a left turn onto Griffith Drive.

Dedrickson was transported to Via Christi where he was pronounced dead. Marden was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP. Dedrickson was not wearing a helmet, only eye protection, according to the KHP.

There will be a free Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the First Presbyterian Church on Nov. 24.

According to the coordinator, Margaret Kilpatrick, there will be meal pick up in the alley adjacent to the church at 113 W. 5th Street or dine-in eating will be available.&nbsp; Pick up will be from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. and dine-in from noon to 1:30 p.m.

You must call to reserve a pick up meal. Call 785-238-1191 between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Nov. 18.

Kim Baldwin, McPherson County farmer and rancher There’s something to be said about waking up to the sound of rain on a roof and thunder rumbling in the distance. Add in a dash of lightning momentarily highlighting an otherwise dark sky, and we have the start of a glorious fall day! &nbsp; It’s no secret I prefer the warm sunlight to awaken me from my slumber. But, after experiencing an incredibly hot and dry year that undoubtedly impacted our crops and attitudes, I jumped out of bed before my alarm clock went off to start my day. After all, it was raining, and it would continue to rain for the duration of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp; It was a cold and dark morning, which required wool socks and warm coffee as we got the kids moving and prepared for school. Generally, I’m not a fan of feeling cold in the morning, but I threw on a sweatshirt and happily packed the kids’ lunches and then gleefully made their breakfasts because it was raining and it would continue to rain for the remainder of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp; After getting the kids on the bus, my husband and I decided to make a trip into town to enjoy a warm breakfast together at our local cafe. It’s a tradition we haven’t practiced in a while but enjoy whenever there is a morning rain. &nbsp; I quickly put my hair up in a ponytail while walking out the door and cheerfully accepted that I’d probably have a bad hair day. But that didn’t matter. It was raining and it would continue to rain for the rest of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Oh, how this morning rain was perfectly timed! After all, we had just wrapped up our fall harvest the day before feeling tired and deflated knowing it wasn’t the greatest of harvests. We gave thanks at the dinner table for the harvest we did have, asked for the rain forecast to hold, and then went to bed.&nbsp; &nbsp; And in the cold and dark early hours of the morning, the rain indeed arrived. And it remained a steady presence for the rest of the day and into the evening. &nbsp; The sun remained hidden behind the clouds and the temperature required me to keep my wool socks and sweater on all day. We enjoyed warm soup for lunch and office work that had been neglected because we haven’t had an opportunity to break from fall harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; To others it was probably an otherwise no good, dreary and drab November day. A day that one would prefer to avoid for the sake of comfort, morale, or even style.&nbsp; &nbsp; But for me, it turned out to be a glorious fall day! All because I awoke to the sound of rain.&nbsp;

Just after 8p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery in the 12000 block of Blue River Hills Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 43-year-old man reported a 54-year-old suspect used his 2020 Dodge Ram and struck the victim's 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser that was parked on the side of the road following an argument between the two.

A few hours later at 1a.m. Saturday, officers also filed a report for arson . in the 3800 block of W. 69th Ave. after responding to a report of the Dodge Ram that hit the victim's car was on fire. Riley County Fire District #1 responded as well to extinguish the fire.&nbsp;

Geary County Sheriff’s Office Community Involvement Team is having its annual vendor bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Geary County 4-H/Senior Citizens Center, 1025 S. Spring Valley Rd. CIT is inviting local and area vendors to set up a booth and sell or advertise their products. &nbsp;

CIT is a non-profit community coalition that aims at building positive rapport between law enforcement members and the citizens, particularly youth of Geary County and surrounding communities.

The vendor event is one of the organization’s major fund-raisers which helps support such activities as Camp SHIELD, participation at Touch-A-Truck, the 4-H Fair, the Junction City Block Party; organize Operation Milford Santa, Operation Santa with Toys 4 Tots and many other community-wide events. At many events CIT provides educational material, items for children such as water bottles, t-shirts and holiday-themed giveaways. Camp SHIELD is offered to select participants at no cost to them. It is a five-day camp, traditionally hosted at Rock Springs 4-H Center where team-building is a key emphasis in addition to drug and alcohol awareness and insight to law enforcement operations.

The vendor event features many home-based businesses along with handmade items ranging in a wide variety. Each vendor is asked to provide a giveaway prize. Booth spaces range in price from $30-$45 and fees go directly to CIT. Spaces are still available. Fort Riley will host a&nbsp;hiring&nbsp;and education&nbsp;fair&nbsp;at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Ave., on Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free to attend and open to all DoD cardholders, including active duty Soldiers, family members, veterans, retirees and DoD civilians, as well as the general public.

The event will feature schools from around the United States, regional and local employers, KANSASWORKS, education counselors, financial aid advisors, Transition Assistance Program counselors and many other organizations. In total, more than 100 exhibitors will be on-site.

Organizers recommend that attendees dress for success and bring copies of their resumes, as employers may interview or hire on the spot.

Fort Riley will host a&nbsp;hiring&nbsp;and education&nbsp;fair&nbsp;at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Ave., on Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free to attend and open to all DoD cardholders, including active duty Soldiers, family members, veterans, retirees and DoD civilians, as well as the general public.The event will feature schools from around the United States, regional and local employers, KANSASWORKS, education counselors, financial aid advisors, Transition Assistance Program counselors and many other organizations. Ballots may also be returned, on or before 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, to the County Clerk’s Office or placed in the ballot drop box located in front of the Geary County Office Building or the Milford City Building.

Ballots may be delivered to a polling place by 7:00 p.m. Election Day.

3. On Tuesday, November 8, 2022 all polling places will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Some polling places have construction around them, so please allow extra time to get to your polling place.

Geary Community Hospital Trustees have selected Bill Overbey to serve as the new interim Chief Executive Officer of Geary Community Hospital.

Overbey, Topeka, previously served as the CEO with Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital of Topeka until March of 2022 when he retired. Prior to his position at the Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for Hays Medical Center for over 13 years. Overbey began his healthcare career as the CFO at Geary Community Hospital from 1991 to 2001.

Overbey will serve in his new interim capacity to help Geary Community Hospital through the transition to Stormont Vail Health Jan. 1.

The Geary County Historical Museum will be closed Tuesday, November 8th for a staff professional development day. Regular hours will resume Wednesday, November 9th.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack on a student at Manhattan High School

Just after 8a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery at Manhattan High School in the 2100 block of Poyntz Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 17-year-old boy was listed as the victim when it was reported a 15-year-old girl kicked him in the head multiple times and punched him during school. 

Police arrested 15-year-old Hanna Whitnack of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated battery. She was processed through juvenile intake and released to a guardian.

Donations on Greater Geary Community Match Day Oct. 18 totaled $358,576.29. That amount coupled with matching funds of $155,000 resulted in a total of $513,576.29. The money was distributed to 45 participating non-profit organizations.

Operation Santa Claus kicks off for 2022

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. –&nbsp;Geary County Unified School District 475 has received&nbsp;a supplemental grant from the Office of Local Defense Communities Cooperation to continue construction of an elementary school on Fort Riley.&nbsp;The award of additional funding was announced October 26.

The district applied for supplemental funding from the Department of Defense’s Public Schools on Military Installations program to remedy rising costs on its project to replace Jefferson Elementary School.

“The original grant proposal captured an industry forecast cost escalation for the period between grant application and job bidding,” said David Wild, USD 475 construction program manager. “However, bid results indicated an 18.5 percent cost escalation, well above the 3-5 percent industry forecast.”

District and Fort Riley staff received a formal invitation from the OLDCC to submit a supplemental application at the end of June.

“With expert guidance from OLDCC, we were able to present sound market evidence of rising prices beyond our control and were invited to submit a package addressing our concerns,” said Superintendent Reginald Eggleston, Ed.D.

The district has submitted another similar grant proposal to expand the new school and replace Morris Hill Elementary. The OLDCC plans to review it in November.

According to Wild, if the review is favorable, the district will be invited to submit a grant. If the grant is awarded, Morris Hill Elementary will be demolished while construction continues to expand the new school, which will still open in August 2023.
