4-H Club Day in Geary County will be held Feb. 11 at the First Presbyterian Church in Junction City. Pre-entry forms and event descriptions are available online at http://www.geary.k-state.edu/4-h/. They are also in the December 4-H newsletter.

Entry forms are due to the Extension Office by Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.

Applications for county 4-H scholarships are due by Jan. 30 and will be submitted online.

The deadline to sign up for 4-H camp and receive financial support from the Geary County 4-H Foundation is May 1.

NEW YORK (AP) — Some are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/libraries-american-library-association-book-banning-af7c9f312266b572c3dc189b1d109de4">fighting local efforts to censor books,</a>&nbsp;while others are focused on cultural programs, education&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">about Ukraine</a>&nbsp;or helping people buy groceries: These are this year's winners of the I Love My Librarian Award.

Based everywhere from Manhattan, Kansas and New York City to Carencro, Louisiana, the winners share a common desire to work closely with their patrons.

“Even in these unprecedented times and as our nation’s library workers face historic levels of intimidation and harassment due to an ongoing wave of book censorship, librarians continue to empower their patrons, teach critical literacy skills, promote inclusion in their space and collections, and provide vital services for their communities,” American Library Association President Lessa Kanani'opua Pelayo-Lozada said in a statement Tuesday.

Each of the 10 honorees will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a $750 travel stipend to attend the library association's LibLearnX event later this month in New Orleans. The awards are based on nominations from library users around the country and made possible by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and support from the New York Public Library.

Winners include&nbsp;<a href="https://ilovelibraries.org/love-my-librarian/tara-coleman/">Tara Coleman</a>,<a href="https://lib.k-state.edu/about/our-people/tara-coleman/">&nbsp;based at Kansas State University</a>&nbsp;in Manhattan, Kansas. She led a<a href="https://ilovelibraries.org/love-my-librarian/tara-coleman/">&nbsp;campuswide common</a>&nbsp;reading program. Kathryn Blackmer Reyes of the San Jose State University library in San Jose, California, cited for how she promoted untold stories by Asian Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics among others. At the Highlands County Library System in Sebring, Florida, Vikki Brown successfully pressed for a grant to set up a mobile library for the rural population.

Cara Chance of the Lafayette Public Library, in Carencro, Louisiana, has battled efforts by the library's Board of Control to restricts books with LGBTQ themes and David Ettinger, at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., who is working with students on their research skills.

At Childs Elementary School, in Bloomington, Indiana, Julie Marie Frye is helping kids learn more about Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion. Lauren Ginsberg-DeVilbiss, of the Wright Brothers School in New York City, is helping students grow a community garden. Students at Christ Church Episcopal School, in Greenville, South Carolina, are receiving help from librarian Jamie Gregory in learning about censorship and the meaning of intellectual freedom.

Roseanna Gulisano, at Highbridge School in New York City, has worked to raise money for more books for students who can't afford to buy them, along with funds to buy food and clothing. At the Evanston Public Library in Evanston, Illinois, Elacsha Madison has focused on teen programs in marginalized communities.

The awards were established in 2008. This year, judges at the library association chose the winners from more than 1,500 nominations.

K-State librarian earns national I Love My Librarian award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann is serving on the House Agriculture Committee again. That's important because this is a Farm Bill year.

"Our current Farm Bill, these are five-year bills, expires Sept. 30 of this year," Mann said. "Getting that right for agriculture and for rural Kansas will be incredibly important. We'll put a lot of effort and focus there. We have been and we'll continue to do that until we get that done."

The new Republican Agriculture Committee chair is&nbsp;Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson from Pennsylvania. Thompson visited Kansas last year.

"We toured a farm, feedyard and ethanol plant and had some other meetings around the district," Mann said. "I enjoyed introducing him to our ag producers. I'm excited for the Ag committee under his leadership."

Mann is hoping to get a legislative hearing in the Farm Bill process brought to Kansas.

"I'm optimistic that we'll be able to have a field hearing in our state," Mann said. "That's not a promise, but that's something I'm working towards. We are not going to like the Farm Bill we get if we don't have ag producers input and stakeholder input in it. It's incredibly important to me and we've been meeting with people and listening to folks."

Mann is back out on his Big First town hall meeting tour this week.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary involving military equipment in Manhattan.

Just after 6:30p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 900 block of Bluemont Ave. in Manhattan.

 A 21-year-old man reported his car was broken into and his military-issued Improved Outer Tactical&nbsp; Vest, helmet and license plates were stolen. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,300.&nbsp;

RCPD reports burglary of man's military equipment 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged ID theft in Manhattan.

Just before 11a.m. Monday, police arrested 38-year-old Austin Swafford, of Manhattan in connection to the theft of a 19-year-old man's wallet and financial cards. 

Swafford is being held on requested charges that include seven counts of felony criminal use of a financial card, one count of felony theft and one count of obstruction after he used the stolen financial cards to make purchases at multiple locations. 

He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $20,000.

Paint by number kits became increasingly popular in the 1950s. They were so popular that Eisenhower’s scheduling secretary handed out kits to many of the Oval Office visitors with instructions to complete and return their kit. This pet project of Thomas Edwin Stephens resulted in a humorous and treasured gift to President Eisenhower. Aware of Ike's fondness for painting, this 'curated exhibit' was proudly displayed around the White House West Wing. Today, this collection forms the core of the Eisenhower Presidential Library’s exhibit, By the Numbers. Terri Butler of Main Street, said it will run from 8:30 a.m. until 1 :30 p.m. and if all goes according to plan it will be in different areas. "So the Farmer's Market will be across from the Fire Department, the Makers Market will be behind the Central National Bank. There will be music, contests, competitions, events activities in the grassy properties across from Godfrey's Shooting Range.&nbsp;

"One example might be that the Brigade baseball team might be coming in to set up some kind of baseball clinic and promote the events that are going on through the baseball."&nbsp; Butler added that throughout the entire community there will be different things. It is all in the planning right now.

Oscar winning screen writer Kevin Willmott delivered the keynote remarks at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Junction City. He told a large audience at the C.L. Hoover Opera House that Junction City is now an example, " of the multiracial democracy that America want to be. "

Willmott remembered during his time growing up that Junction City did not celebrate that diversity. "It was ashamed of it. Junction City always had this bad reputation. Of course part of it was from Ninth Street, but the other part of it was because it was so diverse."

Willmott said Junction City residents need to embrace who they are. "We need to celebrate who we are, we need to tell the world who we are."

The program also included a singing performance of "Glory" by Justin Aaron, recently a contestant on NBC's "The Voice," and Jerel D. McGeachy Jr. with his "I've been to the Mountaintop" remarks.

There was a march to 10th and Washington where the fourth in a series of Junction City First statues was unveiled.

Willmott points to diversity in Junction City

Greg Doering, Kansas Farm Bureau Kansas Farm Bureau had a good 2022 as evidenced by the Pinnacle and New Horizon awards it received at the American Farm Bureau’s 104th convention recently. The Pinnacle award is the highest honor a state Farm Bureau can earn for program and membership achievement. KFB received the New Horizon award, which highlights innovative new programs, for the Casten Fellows Program, developed to honor the life of staffer Jill Casten-Downing through leadership development and international travel. The honors are well deserved, and it’s nice to take a few minutes to appreciate the amount of work required to go from the initial idea to implementation and execution. The destination is important, but so is the journey. There’s no shortage of challenges today in agriculture, as evidenced by just some of the ongoing work from last year, like KFB’s End Hunger campaign to ensure all our state’s residents have access to the food they need. From Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, individuals and businesses contributed more than $50,000 toward the campaign. That money will go to innovative programs run by county Farm Bureaus to address the needs they’ve identified locally. By no way is this problem solved, but progress is being made. Next year’s goal is to raise $75,000. Another ongoing project includes KFB’s purchase of Shop Kansas Farms (SKF) which allows our farm and ranch members to reach consumers in a new way. SKF founder Rick McNary is also helping communities develop local food systems to capture the full economic value from farm gates to dinner plates. Announced late last year, the Rural Kansas Apprenticeship Program will really get rolling in 2023 as the state’s first ever initiative to match agriculturists and rural business owners with a structured plan to train and retain employees. It’s not a silver bullet for the lack of help available in rural areas, but it’s the beginning of addressing a skills gap to meet our current and future workforce needs. As always, KFB will continue to ensure the voices of farmers and ranchers are heard in Topeka with a special focus on three topics: water, taxes and broadband. KFB will continue to support the basic tenets of Kansas water law, which have provided our members the ability to plan, invest and defend their private property rights for decades. KFB policy also supports the development of a Kansas Water Plan, either through the state general fund or dedicated statewide revenue sources. Any redesign of tax structures comes with the potential to shift taxes from one source to another with significant consequences. KFB will continue to steadfastly advocate for the constitutionally required use-value system that accurately and appropriately values agricultural lands and provides stable tax revenues to local units of government. Agricultural operations are businesses, and they should receive fair and equal tax treatment as it pertains to sales tax exemptions. Access to a vibrant, high-speed broadband network is essential to the future of both rural and urban Kansas. Statewide broadband deployment will provide new opportunities for the delivery of healthcare, education, entertainment, business development and enhance the capabilities of precision agriculture. Efforts by the state to facilitate telecommunications connectivity throughout Kansas should consider the technology-dependent nature of the agriculture industry, and its significant impact on the Kansas economy. For those paying attention, this isn’t a new list, and there’s a good chance it will be similar in 2024. There will be advancements on some fronts and setbacks on others. The key is stick to your priorities and have the patience to withstand the mundane and incremental nature of progress.

Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony is set for Monday in Junction City

GEARY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue their investigation of an alleged abduction and are asking the public for help to find three children.

According to Junction City Police, on December 21, Jeana Foley abducted her children identified as 6-year-old Rosie Peterson, 5-year-old Camden Peterson and 3-year-old Genevieve Peterson

On Jan. 5, a felony warrant was issued for Foley's arrest. On Wednesday, Junction City police asked the public to call 911 if you have any&nbsp; information to help bring these kids home. Police released no additional details in the case.

There was a major project in 2022 involving the completion of a new roof at the Geary County Historical Museum. According to the newsletter Geary Glimmers,&nbsp; a Heritage Trust Fund grant was used to help replace the old wood shake roof, which was showing serious signs of age.

Work on the roof was completed in September with final touches of fascia work completed in December.

In 2023 the Historical Society is looking at reinforcing a portion of the foundation at Starcke House, located just south of the museum. The Board of Directors has voted to proceed with a contractor on the project.

Middle school youth from Junction City will begin working in the Astra program for the spring semester on Tuesday at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. Chris Heldstab, Director, explained it's an after-school youth theatre program. "We take middle school youth and we teach them about life skills, theater skills, speech skills and of course dance, choreography, improv, every thing you can imagine goes into this program.

The students will prepare to present Shrek, the musical. Heldstab noted that Shrek is a massive show with costuming and the set. All students will have role ranging from performing to working with the set,

Show dates are March 31 and April 1, said Heldstab. This is the first season we are doing two shows because we sell out every season and last season it was packed." Tickets will go on sale in March at $5 per ticket.

By Dewey TerrillJC PostMiddle school youth from Junction City will begin working in the Astra program for the spring semester on Tuesday at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. Chris Heldstab, Director, explained it's an after-school youth theatre program. "We take middle school youth and we teach them about life skills, theater skills, speech skills and of course dance, choreography, improv, every thing you can imagine goes into this program.The students will prepare to present Shrek, the musical. Heldstab noted that Shrek is a massive show with costuming and the set. All students will have role ranging from performing to working with the set,Show dates are March 31 and April 1, said Heldstab. This is the first season we are doing two shows because we sell out every season and last season it was packed." Tickets will go on sale in March at $5 per ticket.

POTTAWATOMIE CO. - Deputies with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office executed a narcotics search warrant on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 in the 3600 block of Apel Road.

As a result of an investigation into illegal drug activity and stolen property in the Pottawatomie County area, Deputies found numerous marijuana plants, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia and several items of stolen property were recovered.

Deputies arrested 47-year-old Michael Duane Johnson of Wamego in connection with the search warrant.

Johnson was taken into custody and transported to the Pottawatomie County Jail on charges of Cultivation of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Possession&nbsp; of Marijuana, Possession of Stimulant, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
