RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Jacob N. Hahn, 22, Maysville, Missouri, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Tallgrass Road.

The van rear-ended a 2009 Peterbilt semi driven by Roy D. Thompson, 62, Houston, Texas. After impact Hahn lost control of the van and it traveled into the ditch.

EMS transported Thompson to Via Christi in Manhattan. Hahn was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

$1500 damage reported after K-State frat house egged

Jan Clutter formed the 34-member Drill Team in 1972 to promote school spirit at Junction City High School. The drill team known for their precision in dance and kick routines. The J"Steppers" name was added in 1974 and remains today. In the late 70's, the Jay Spinners ( Baton Twirlers ) were added to the team and and remained until&nbsp; the late 80's. In the early 90's the team transition from a precision drill / kick team to a multi-skilled dance team performing jazz, kick, pom, hip-hop and lyrical routines.

In the past 50 years nearly 1,100 girls and guys have worn the J-Stepper uniforms.

During those 50 years, there have only been 14 head coaches. Jan Clutter, Wynona Wynn, Robin Rogers, Charlotte Latting, Crystal Jenkins, Nyla Milleson, Gina Whaley, Jennifer Lashley-Hill, Susan Pender, Laura Cornejo, Ellie Dillon, Dani Martino, Tara Crocker and current interim head coach Mimi Khoury.&nbsp;

Geary Community Hospital will come under the auspices of Stormont Vail Health Jan. 1. Officials have been working to transition staff. House of Ruth will be conducting a coat drive Oct. 1- Nov. 18 in Junction City. You can join in the drive by purchasing a new coat to help keep local elementary age school children warm this winter. This effort will serve students attending Spring Valley, Washington, Grandview, Westwood and Lincoln Elementary Schools.

Drop-off times at Church of the Living God will be Wednesdays 6-8 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. until noon.

Drop-off times at the First Presbyterian Church are Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Carl DeArmond, Chief Operations Officer for USD 475, and David Wild, Construction Manager for USD 475 were guest speakers at the September 28 JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Celebration of Optimism.

DeArmond has been with the local school district since 2016. He was then in charge of the IT Department and became the Chief Operations Officer when David Wild became a part-time employee as the Construction Manager. DeArmond told Optimist Club members that “the old JCHS site demolition and cleanup is near an end with only the former Auto Shop and rubble to be removed from the area.

The new elementary school on Fort Riley will be in the current Morris Hill Elementary area and will replace both the Morris Hill and Jefferson Elementary Schools. There will be six Pre-K classrooms and will also include K-5 grades with a capacity of 500 students. This building is being built with no increase in taxes to the citizens of Geary County. There is an 80/20 split between the federal government and USD 475. The 80% of funding from the government is made available for school districts impacted by and in support of soldiers and their families who serve at Fort Riley. Fifty percent of the students in USD 475 have one or more parents stationed at Fort Riley. The new building is projected to open in August of 2023.”

He also said that “there has been an Intergovernmental Support Agreement established in partnership with Fort Riley. This agreement provides that Hutton Construction serve as the Construction Manager at Risk for building projects other than schools at Fort Riley.” David Wild said that “by working with this partnership there is a 40% savings to the Army and the school district has received $12 million dollars for as many as 36 renovation and/or modernization projects on Post. Ours is the first school district with such a project.”

DeArmond stated that “the school district has a Security Center at the new Junction City High School at which cameras, not only in the high school, but in all of the district’s 18 buildings can be monitored. This is another layer of security for our students and staff in USD 475.”

Don Manley, current President of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club was recognized for his service as the President for the last four years. He and his wife are moving from the area. Nita Miller will be the club’s new President effective October 1.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas woman died in an accident just after 8:p.m. Tuesday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder driven by&nbsp; Stefanie L. Turner, 42, Wamego, was westbound in the 15,000 Block of Elm Slough Road. 

The driver lost consciousness and the SUV traveled off the roadway to the left.

Turner was pronounced dead at the scene. An 11-year-old girl in the vehicle was not injured.&nbsp; Both were properly restrained at the time of the incident, according to the KHP.

Geary County Commissioners have approved the renaming of a judicial conference room at the Geary County Courthouse after former 8th Judicial District Administrative Judge, Michael Powers.

Alex Tyson, Commission Chair, noted that Powers served as chief judge for approximately 30 years. "They want to honor his legacy." The naming request was submitted to the commission from Ret. Judge Steven Hornbaker.

JUNCTION CITY — Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division recently trained at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, as they prepare for upcoming deployment to Europe. 

Col. Brian Harris, Brigade Commander, said the team trained in a 30-mile-by-30-mile tract from east to west and north to south. 

"You can really stretch the brigade across distances across the Mojave Desert," he said. "It was August and temperatures would get up to about 112 degrees so it definitely stressed the people and their equipment to their limits." 

Harris noted that the Soldiers got better and returned ready for their deployment to Europe.&nbsp;

Harris said over the coming weeks they will continue to get their equipment and vehicles ready. They will be transported by rail to a port where they will be shipped to Europe. 

"While that's going on we'll continue to get the Soldiers equipment ready," Harris said. "They'll be packing their stuff out, getting their rucksacks and trunks filled with all the stuff that we need over in Europe." 

Families will also be prepared for the time while their loved ones are away.

There are multiple programs to help families and Soldiers during the deployment. One of those will be an Information and Resource Fair on Oct. 13 for both so that they have an understanding of everything available at Fort Riley and across Junction City and the Flint Hills. 

"We're going to make sure that they have access to opportunities such as Army Community Service, we'll have chaplains back here, the MWR facilities, the Victory Wellness program that the Division has in place among many other opportunities will all be available for the families," Harris said.

Geary County Commissioners reached a preliminary agreement this week with Cloud County Community College on the school's Geary County campus. Alex Tyson, said on Monday representatives from the college met with the governing about the renewal of the lease. "What's awesome is we were able to come to an agreement. We have a 10-year lease that will be signed. "

Some wording remains to be finalized on the lease. "However we're all in agreement that Cloud's a very important piece to our county and to this community," said Tyson. He indicated that the agreement will be finalized this week.

Geary Community Hospital Trustees have approved an agreement on continued transfer of funds from the county to the hospital. RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating theft of cash from a car in Manhattan.

Just after 10p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 70 block of John Pride Lane. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 51-year-old woman reported her unlocked car was entered and a Calvin Klein purse containing various cards and $862 cash was stolen from inside. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $900.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Woman's purse containing $862 taken from unlocked car

Geary County Commissioners received a 2021 audit report Monday, that did not include any illegal activity or missing funds, but left officials shaking their heads. Commission Chair Alex Tyson described it at one point as troubling to hear about.

One major issue involved $2.7 million in COVID-19 money received in 2020 which was initially targeted for salary reimbursement but eventually went for a county 800 megahertz radio system.

 Tami Robison, the new County Finance Officer, who did not take that job until March 0f 2022, said the check for the $2.7 million in funding was never deposited in the County accounts, but was held and then voided at end of 2021. Then Geary County moved those monies to pay for the radio project. "So based on the report sent&nbsp; to the state it showed the county was reimbursing for salaries but the thing that they missed doing is actually depositing that check." The voiding of the check freed up the funds for the radio project.&nbsp;

Robison explained that the net effect would have been the same. The salary reimbursement was already part of the budget funded by property tax dollars. Robison noted that was an eligible expense with COVID and because there was such a short time to do that, many of the counties, that's one of the things they were doing, they were taking salaries to get reimbursed so they could get the funds used.

Robison said there was nothing wrong with reimbursement of salaries but the check was not deposited. 

Geary County will now contact the State and the county's consulting firm for the COVID-19 funds for clarification to see if there are issues on expenditure of the funds for the radio system. "Let the State know what happened, what was done with those funds, and see what they advise us to do to rectify it." Robison is hopeful the County will not have to find the funds to repay the $2.7 million. She said that would be worst case scenario because Geary County would have to give them the money back because the County didn't do what they said they were going to do with it."

Another topic during the audit report included the finding that $568,000 had to be adjusted for 24 accounts, with officials unaware that 18 of those accounts existed. Robison said the money is not missing but was being held outside the County's general checking account.

 "Because it was being held outside there, somehow in previous audits those funds were not picked up and put on our financials so the cash wasn't being reflected in our financials on those 18 accounts. " Robison added that there were 24 accounts being held outside&nbsp; the county's general checking and 18 are not on the County's audit report and six are reflected on that audit report for 2021.

Robison has been researching the records since her hiring in March of this year to help correct any deficiencies.

County works to clean up the accounts and records

Optimist International Kansas District Governor Designate, Doug Jardine, installed the 2022-23 officers of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club.&nbsp; The new officers will take their positions on October 1.&nbsp;

JC Optimists install officers

&nbsp;Railroad fans who enjoy steam engines have one last opportunity this weekend to ride in a train powered by Abilene’s Santa Fe 3415 locomotive before it is taken out of service for required maintenance.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Officials of the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad announced today that the 103 year-old engine will undergo a special overhaul mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration every 15 years. Although the FRA only requires a complete safety check of the engine’s boiler, the railroad plans to make other improvements to the engine that will further extend the antique locomotive’s life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said that while the railroad’s volunteer crew does regular day-to-day maintenance work on the iconic locomotive, the upcoming task requires actually taking the engine apart and examining the condition of each component in order to determine the extent of needed repairs before actual work on the engine can be done.&nbsp;

“Steam locomotives are just like your automobile. These big engines are subject to normal wear and tear,” said Boelling. “But unlike your car, steam engine parts cannot simply be purchased and installed. They must be made from scratch, and that takes time.”&nbsp;

Boelling said the procedure may take up to 18 months, meaning that the engine will be out of service during that time are still&nbsp; available for $85. All tickets can be purchased from the railroad’s website,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.asvrr.org/" target="_blank">www.asvrr.org</a>

Last call for the Santa Fe 3415 this year

On September 21, Joe Handlos, JC Breakfast Optimist Club Treasurer, was given a President’s Citation for his work since 2015.&nbsp; The citation included the following statement:

Greg Doering, Kansas Farm Bureau Osage orange trees are still common throughout much of the United States, though not many people appreciate just how much the thorny, dense trees have shaped our country. Before Christopher Columbus’ arrival, Osage orange had a limited range in the Red River basin in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Like the droves of Europeans who followed, the tree eventually spread to all corners of our country, so long as you don’t count Alaska and Hawaii. The thorny, dense trees go by a number of names, including hedge trees, prairie hedge, hedge apple, horse apple, bowwood or yellow wood for the hue of the heartwood. Whatever moniker you choose, the trees were the original barbed wire. After sprouting, the hedge trees were aggressively pruned to promote thick growth that was woven into a living fence considered to be “horse high, bull strong and hog tight”. Even after the widespread adoption of barbed wire, wood from the hedge tree is still highly prized for fence posts based on its ability to withstand the elements. Termites and other insects don’t bother the wood. Water doesn’t penetrate the dense grain either. Today, a post made from Osage orange is likely to outlast the strands of barbed wire attached to it. In fact, the posts can be difficult if not impossible to work with if they’re left to season too long after cutting. Hedge posts don’t decay, rather they almost petrify into something between wood and stone. Osage orange’s qualities extend well beyond corralling cattle and other livestock. Its tight grain makes the wood extraordinarily flexible, enough so that a bow made from the tree was worth a horse and blanket in the 1800s. Osage orange also offers the highest heat value of any species when burned as firewood. Osage orange is probably the most popular and widely distributed plant that isn’t a food source for either humans or animals. Its fruit is a softball-sized green ball with folded contours that surround a cluster of seeds. We called them brain blobs growing up because the outer shell consisted of folded contours. They were dense and would make a satisfying sound when flung into a tree trunk. They’ll start falling off trees any day this time of year. Rumor has it the fruits keep all sorts of creepy-crawlies away, from boxelder bugs and crickets to spiders and other pests, especially when placed in basements or near the foundation of a home. Research has yet to find any evidence to support those claims, yet the legends endure. &nbsp;Steel T-posts and pipe braces are gaining favor, but some still prefer to use hedge posts for fencing. Composite compound bows can launch an arrow with a much greater force than the traditional longbow, yet Osage orange bow staves are still readily available. The living fencerows are long gone, but hedge trees planted during the Great Depression as windbreaks still mark the edges of fields. There’s no one quality that has seeded the Osage orange across the countryside, rather versality is its main attribute. From hedge to post or bow to kindling, mankind has found it useful for centuries. While modern materials will eventually win out, they won’t ever have a history quite like hedge.
