Junction City / Geary County United Way Executive Director Nichole Mader has reported that $2,770 was the amount of funding received during the recent Business Blitz.

There were a total of 14 businesses that made pledges to United Way during the blitz.

Geary USD 475 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston reported during the past week that the school district is looking at being over 7,000 students in total enrollment. "Which is good. We want to be larger actually."

Eggleston said enrollment has increased in the secondary buildings." There were approximately 940 students at Junction City Middle School, about 1700 at the high school, more than 100 at the Karns Building and Fort Riley Middle School had approximately 560 students." Enrollment at the secondary level has really been the area of growth for our school district. " Elementary enrollment has remained about the same.

Junction City police will host their Citizens Police Academy from January through April. It begins with a welcome and police department and jail tours on Jan. 19 and concludes April 20 with a graduation dinner at the Municipal Building.

Other class sessions will range from those dealing with dispatch hiring and training to the drug operations group and crime lab crime scene procedures. Approximately 20 participants go through the program each year to learn about police operations and functions.

Fort Riley will host its first full-service Military Retiree Appreciation Day since 2019 on Saturday, Oct. 22. Military retirees of all services, and their spouses, widows or widowers are invited to Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue, Fort Riley. Doors open for registration at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:30.

Throughout the day guests will hear the latest information on TRICARE, Medicare, Irwin Army Community Hospital services and other health care issues, veteran affairs, legislative issues, casualty affairs, long term care insurance and many other topics of concern to military retirees. Many veterans service organizations will also be on hand to provide information to attendees.

The public health team from Irwin Army Community Hospital will provide vaccinations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for influenza, shingles, and pneumonia.

The lunch hour will include entertainment from an area barbershop quartet. Attendees may purchase a box lunch for $10 in advance by calling the Fort Riley Retirement Services Office at 785-239-3320 or 785- 239-3667, or emailing usarmy.riley.rso@army.mil. Lunch reservations must be made by Oct. 15.

Junction City employee anniversaries are recognized

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges after a traffic stop in Manhattan.

Just after 1a.m. Tuesday, police stopped a vehicle near the intersection of S. 3rd Street and Fort Riley Boulevard for a traffic violation, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers found meth and paraphernalia in the vehicle. They arrested&nbsp;&nbsp;Kyle Pruyn Jr., 31, of Manhattan, and Mercedes Imlay, 21, of Grandview Plaza.

&nbsp;Pruyn Jr. is being held on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while suspended. He remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $5,000. Imlay was arrested for failure to appear. She was issued a total bond of $10,000 and is no longer in custody.

Pruyn has previous convictions for drugs and driving while suspended, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections

 V P Racing Fuels-Heartland reported a 33-year-old male suspect stole checks from a mailbox and cashed them at banks in Manhattan and Wichita. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,300.

This will be a partnership with the Geary County Sheriff's Office,Grandview Plaza Police Department and local faith-based organizations. "We're going to have a pitching machine. Kids and people will have an opportunity to hit off the pitching machine and catch fly balls. We're going to have hamburgers and hotdogs."

Speed radar will be set up so participants can see how fast they can throw. Bouncy houses will also be part of the event.&nbsp;

There was not any illegal activity or missing money reported following a recent 2021 Geary County audit report to the county commission. But it did show confusion on multiple issues. One of those involved a $2.7 million COVID-19&nbsp; check that officials noted was never deposited in the County accounts and then voided at the end of 2021. The action to void the check freed up the money for a radio project. The other issue involved 24 accounts that were being held outside the County's general checking, including 18 that were not on the County's audit report and were unknown to the commission. Those accounts, or funds, were legal.

During their weekly meeting held on Monday the members of the governing body addressed the issue. Commissioner Trish Giordano called for more public education on the subject beyond a previous JC Post article and felt that officials need to meet on how to educate the public better.&nbsp;

Chairman Alex Tyson said some blame can be put on the commission for not knowing, while Commissioner Keith Ascher made it clear that the audit pointed out that no money was missing and the funds were put in the wrong bucket. Giordano called the situation "sloppy," while Tyson also added that nobody did anything illegal.

Giordano stated, "I just feel like the public needs to know. Nobody's perfect, we all make mistakes and you don't know what you don't know. "&nbsp;

County officials will meet and prepare a checklist of issues for dicussion.

Junction City Commissioners will be asked to approve Freedom Fest JC as the City's Fourth of July celebration when they meet Tuesday evening.

In 2022 Freedom Fest JC was held for the first time downtown while Sundown Salute moved many of their operations to Milford. The Sundown Salute parade, veterans ceremony and Freedom Run events were held in Junction City. City Manager Allen Dinkel said Freedom Fest was started last year in order to keep something downtown in Heritage Park. 

Dinkel noted that the mix of the two celebrations with part of Sundown Salute in town didn't cause real problems, "but conflict for at least my staff members having to do different things for different organizations." Dinkel added Freedom Fest JC has already put out a notice that they will return in 2023 and this is an acknowledgement of that decision.&nbsp;

The approved 2023 City budget includes a donation by the City to Freedom Fest JC. The budget also includes traditional costs the City has had for a July 4th celebration in the past.&nbsp;

Dinkel is recommending to the commission that a single event in the community will make it easier for the City staff to coordinate labor, equipment and resources.&nbsp;

EMS transported Velasquez to Via Christi for treatment of neck pain, according to the RCPD.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

Woman from Milford hospitalized after car overturns

MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau has pledged the largest donation in the organization's history: $5 million over five years to support the Kansas State University College of Agriculture's innovation centers for grain, food, animal and agronomy research. The two new innovation centers will focus on the development and diversification of Kansas and the world's food and agricultural economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This investment will fund new facilities, renovations of current buildings and improvements in the technology and equipment necessary for interdisciplinary, cutting-edge research and continue to enhance the college's exceptional student experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We've known for a long time the facilities at the country's first land-grant institution needed updating," said Rich Felts, president of Kansas Farm Bureau. MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau has pledged the largest donation in the organization's history: $5 million over five years to support the Kansas State University College of Agriculture's innovation centers for grain, food, animal and agronomy research. The two new innovation centers will focus on the development and diversification of Kansas and the world's food and agricultural economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;This investment will fund new facilities, renovations of current buildings and improvements in the technology and equipment necessary for interdisciplinary, cutting-edge research and continue to enhance the college's exceptional student experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;"We've known for a long time the facilities at the country's first land-grant institution needed updating," said Rich Felts, president of Kansas Farm Bureau. "We're excited to come alongside President Linton to make an investment in our industry, our state and future students to ensure K-State remains in its position as a global leader in agriculture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. --&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;will celebrate its long-standing commitment to community service when members across the state participate in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/48-hours-of-4-h/" target="_blank">48 Hours of 4-H</a>, Oct. 8-9.&nbsp;

Beth Hinshaw, a regional 4-H youth development specialist, said the ninth annual event wraps up&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/professionals/marketing-resources/4-h-week-toolkit/" target="_blank">National 4-H Week in the United States</a>.&nbsp;

“In our (4-H) pledge, we say we commit our hands to larger service to my club, community, country and world,” Hinshaw said. “48 Hours of 4-H helps fulfill the pledge that 4-H members make every time they meet together.”&nbsp;

48 Hours of 4-H is a project that encourages clubs in the state to plan a community service project. “It’s not a 48 hour project,” Hinshaw said, “but rather a project that you do sometime during that 48 hour timeframe.”&nbsp;

“We want the service to be meaningful and we want it to make a difference in their community,” she added. “This gives young people an opportunity to look at what is needed in their community.”&nbsp;

In the past, Hinshaw said, groups have been very creative in how they have chosen to help their community, including such things as:&nbsp;

“They’ve found something to do that will make a difference in the community where they live,” Hinshaw said. “Some groups have long-time partners who they work with; for example, one local unit helps with a Halloween Walk every year. But there are a lot of new projects, also.”&nbsp;

In addition to asking local media to cover their project, Hinshaw urges Kansas 4-H clubs to post pictures to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag, #484H.&nbsp;

Friends of the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library in Junction City have been awarded $75,000 in state tax credits through the Community Service Tax Credit Program sponsored by the State Department of Commerce. Funds raised through the program are dedicated to the project to build a new public library for&nbsp; the Junction City / Fort Riley / Geary County area.

The program provides a 50% tax credit to the donors who purchase them in the form of a direct deduction from the donor's state tax obligation.&nbsp;

The Geary County project was one of 29 awarded this year. While some of the tax credits were spoken&nbsp; for in the form of pledges made during the application process, there are still credits available for donors to purchase.&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY - Hundreds of visitors made their way to the second annual <a href="https://www.junctioncityoktoberfest.com/">Oktoberfest</a> on Washington Street this weekend.

With events for all ages, festival-goers found a variety of entertainment options while at the festival.

Kids climbed rock walls and had fun in bounce houses and on inflatables.

Men and women competed to see who could win the Hammerschlagen contest which required contestants to hit a nail into a stump, while using the angled end of the hammer head.

There were also stein-hoisting and stein carrying competitions, along with a yodeling competition.

Food and beverage vendors served dishes and drinks following the German theme for Oktoberfest.

The festival came to a close on Saturday evening following a concert in the street by the KC All Stars.

2nd annual Oktoberfest brought thousands to Washington Street in JC

Following an extensive investigation, on Sunday at approximately 6 p.m. the Junction City Police Department Arrested Joshua Sturgis a 34 year old resident of Junction City on the following requested charges in connection with the Sunday morning shooting death of Justin Rose, 38, Junction City.

During their investigation Detectives identified Sturgis as the primary suspect. The Missouri Highway Patrol located and initiated a traffic stop on Sturgis detaining him in Saint Charles County Missouri. Junction City Police Department Detectives then traveled and placed Sturgis under arrest on the charges. 

Sturgis is currently being held in Saint Charles County Missouri on a $1,000,000 bond pending extradition. The Junction City Police&nbsp; Department thanked the Missouri Highway Patrol, Geary County Sheriff’s Office, Junction City Fire Department, and the Saint Charles County Sheriff’s Office. 

Junction City police have confirmed that on on Sunday at approximately 0200 hours the Junction City Police Department was dispatched to the 900 block of North Washington for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival officers located one man subject suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Geary Community Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. 

The victim has been identified as Justin J. Rose, 38, Junction City. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Junction City Police Department at (785) 762-5912 or submit a tip through the crime stoppers hotline (785) 762-8477. Information submitted that helps lead to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward through Crime Stoppers. No further information is available at this time

UPDATE: JCPD: 34YO JC resident, arrested in Missouri, in connection with homicide

Thousands of people have attended the Oktoberfest celebration in Junction City. There was a steady turnout in the downtown area for the event on Saturday. Justin Hoover, Coordinator, said on Saturday night there were two to three times more people in attendance than a year ago. "They had a drone that went over and the drone counted 5,800 people and that doesn't count the people that are all in the tents."

Hoover said it would be his guess that there more than 10,000 present Friday night. "And then we had just a huge turnout today ( Saturday ) to so it's really been good."

Hoover noted that those attending enjoyed the food, contests and the bands. "It's been a nice little family environment to. I think they're all enjoying that."

There was a Volksmarch held Saturday morning in conjunction with the Oktoberfest. Phyllis Fitzgerald, Coordinator, said when she arrived there were people already waiting to sign up or get started on the march ( 5K or 10K ). As of 9:30 approximately 60 people had signed and another 40 were expected to sign up. "Very successful, nice day." said Fitzgerald.

Polka bands will perform while the headliner bands will be Brass Rewind from Kansas City plus the All Stars from Kansas City.&nbsp;

Oktoberfest runs through Friday evening, and during the day and evening on Saturday. Hoover expects a big crowd. 'We've been out and about to a lot of events, we've had folks that were out at Apple Day at Fort Riley passing out a lot of information. I think we've done a pretty good job of getting the word out."

Line-up for the ride will then begin for a $20 suggested donation. Vendors will be on site until 5 p.m.&nbsp;

8th Judicial District Nominating Commission seeks nominations to fill district magistrate judge vacancy

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Junction City High School and USD 475 will celebrate Homecoming the first week of October. In addition to the traditional Homecoming football game and crowning of royalty on Friday, festivities will include a parade, bonfire, and dance as well as themed dress-up spirit days. This year’s Homecoming theme is “Once Upon a Time.”

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the high school will host the Homecoming Parade and Showcase at 6:30 p.m., preceded by building tours from 5-6 p.m. The parade will start at the northwest parking lot and circle counterclockwise around the school to the football field, where the showcase will start at 7 p.m.

The showcase will feature performances by the JCHS band, cheerleaders and dance team, and recognition of the Homecoming royalty candidates. Winners of the Homecoming float and sheet decorating contests will also be announced. A bonfire in a nearby field will top things off at 7:30.

The Junction City Blue Jay football team will face Manhattan at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. The halftime presentation will include coronation of the Homecoming king, queen and court. Attendees are encouraged to buy their tickets online in advance to avoid a long line. Tickets can be purchased at https://bluejayathletics.org/event-tickets and printed at home.

The Homecoming Dance will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the school’s auxiliary gym. Only current JCHS students will be permitted. The entry fee is $5.

All USD 475 schools and community members are encouraged to enjoy the week’s spirit day dress-up themes. Monday is Sleeping Beauties Day—wear pajamas. In addition to the traditional Homecoming football game and crowning of royalty on Friday, festivities will include a parade, bonfire, and dance as well as themed dress-up spirit days. This year’s Homecoming theme is “Once Upon a Time.”On Thursday, Oct. 6, the high school will host the Homecoming Parade and Showcase at 6:30 p.m., preceded by building tours from 5-6 p.m. The parade will start at the northwest parking lot and circle counterclockwise around the school to the football field, where the showcase will start at 7 p.m.The showcase will feature performances by the JCHS band, cheerleaders and dance team, and recognition of the Homecoming royalty candidates. Winners of the Homecoming float and sheet decorating contests will also be announced. A bonfire in a nearby field will top things off at 7:30.The Junction City Blue Jay football team will face Manhattan at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. The halftime presentation will include coronation of the Homecoming king, queen and court. Attendees are encouraged to buy their tickets online in advance to avoid a long line. Tickets can be purchased at https://bluejayathletics.org/event-tickets and printed at home.The Homecoming Dance will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the school’s auxiliary gym. Only current JCHS students will be permitted. The entry fee is $5.All USD 475 schools and community members are encouraged to enjoy the week’s spirit day dress-up themes.
