LaTurner votes in favor of debt limit deal

DICKINSON COUNTY —After over a one month investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit has made two arrests, according to Sheriff Jerry Davis.

Just after 3a.m. May 26, deputies assigned to the Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic stop with a Buick Le Sabre in the 3400 Block of Kansas 15 Highway to execute a search warrant on the vehicle. Jordan Daniel Greene, 37, and Justyne Marie Hanson, 40, both of Abilene were taken into custody.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Abilene Police Department, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 400 Block of NW 3rd Street in Abilene.&nbsp; Officers seized methamphetamine, fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia during the search of the vehicle and the residence.

Greene was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute opioid, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and no drug tax stamp.

MANHATTAN - On Monday, the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs Office held Memorial Day services at four state Veterans cemeteries across the state.

Governor Laura Kelly and Cpt Luke Admire with IACH each spoke about the importance of remembering those who died while serving the country.

The Vietnam Vets and Legacy Vets Motorcycle clubs presented a check for $3,000 to the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery.

In 1999, the Kansas Senate Bill 19 was signed into law, authorizing the construction of four state-owned Veterans cemeteries.&nbsp;

These cemeteries were funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs Federal Cemetery Grants Program.

In 2002, Fort Dodge become the first state-owned Veterans cemetery and in 2009, the Fort Riley/Manhattan cemetery was the final Veterans cemetery to open. The other two cemeteries are located in WaKeeney and Winfield.&nbsp;

More than 4,500 eligible Veterans and their family members have been interred in the four Veterans cemeteries since they opened.

This scholarship will be used towards my education at the University of Kansas where I will be studying finance. This scholarship means a lot to me for two reasons. One, I have banked at Meritrust for about six years now and have been treated with the utmost customer service, and two, I plan on getting a degree that allows me to help people achieve their financial goals the same way Meritrust does."

Hazrat Azghary is currently a Junior studying health science. Azghary told Meritrust, "Being awarded this scholarship would offer me financial assistance for my education, alleviating the stress of student loans. I’ve always loved working with computers since I was younger and wanted to have an IT job when I grew up, being able to work in Cybersecurity is my dream. Thanks for making it possible!"

Meritrust announces four recipients for the 2023 Meritrust Member Scholarship

Doug Vogelsang shared some of his experiences working with bees at the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s “Celebration of Optimism” on May 31 at the Hampton Inn in Junction City.

He stated that there are “three types of bees. They include the Queen, drones, and worker bees. Within the worker bees there are scouts, nurses, morticians, and others. Bees have three simple eyes, four wings and one stinger. After a bee uses its stinger to protect the Queen, the hive or itself, the bee dies. Queen bees live for three to five years and do not have stingers. A typical hive will have 40,000 to 60,000 bees in a mature hive.

Mr. Vogelsang also told club members that “one-third of our food comes from pollination, which is a major function of bees. A worker bee will make a fraction of a teaspoon of honey during its lifetime.

One gallon of honey weighs about eleven pounds. Honey is usually harvested at the end of July or in August. Bees communicate through odors, so when a beekeeper wants to interrupt their communication, the beekeeper uses smoke or sprays a light mist of sugar syrup at or near the bees todistract them so the honey can be harvested. Raw honey, which is found locally, may be used to counterallergies. Honeybee soap can be used for some skin rashes or irritations.”

Doug has been a beekeeper for 40 years. When honey is available to him, he sells bottles of it at the Farmer’s Market in the JC Naz parking lot on Thursdays. However, he stated “ I may not have enough to sell this year.”

Michael Hahn always wanted to stay in the UMC — but his congregation was leaving it.

Each has found new church homes, and they’re not alone.

Thousands of United Methodist congregations have been voting on whether to stay or quit one of the nation’s largest denominations amid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-gay-rights-f3fc3ec9e1f39501495d227d5a0963f8">intractable debates</a>&nbsp;over theology and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-gay-rights-marriage-1ed8df15ecbb36700cbe638b29dc6617">role of LGBTQ people</a>. There are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-religion-marriage-b6a4ec4a28ce2674932573ba6c850f4a">stark differences</a>&nbsp;over recognizing same-sex marriage and ordaining LGBTQ clergy.

But the dividing line isn’t just running between congregations. It’s running right through the pews of individual churches, separating people who had long worshipped together.

Those who come up on the short end of a disaffiliation vote face the dilemma of whether to stay or go.

According to the Great Plains conference agenda packet, 103 churches' disassociation are set to be approved by resolution Wednesday.

Kansas churches that have voted to leave the denomination include:

The splintering — often grievous and tense — has spurred new initiatives to provide havens for the unmoored. Some United Methodist regional conferences have begun designating “Lighthouse” congregations — ones that actively welcome people who wanted to stay United Methodist but whose former churches voted to leave. Other conferences use different names, such as “Beacon” or “Oasis,” but the idea is the same.

"The pain is real, and there is a lot of grief and a lot of heartache over the split in the United Methodist Church,” said the Rev. Lynda Ferguson, the great-grandchild of a circuit-riding Methodist pastor.

Her North Carolina church, First United Methodist Asheboro, became a Lighthouse congregation. That assures newcomers that it’s committed to staying United Methodist, so they won’t have to worry about another disaffiliation vote. More than 400 congregations have disaffiliated in North Carolina.

Ferguson said she can personally relate to those from departing congregations. Her childhood church — the one that shaped her faith and where at age 12 she felt the call to ministry — also voted to leave.

"Part of the Lighthouse mission is to let people know the United Methodist Church is still here and still welcoming,” said the Rev. Ed McKinney, pastor of Stokesdale United Methodist Church in Stokesdale, North Carolina, which also became a Lighthouse congregation.

Michael Hahn and his family are among a group of newcomers who have begun participating in Stokesdale after their previous congregations left the denomination.

Hahn, whose family has been Methodist for generations, said he couldn’t imagine leaving the denomination, which he values for blending faith and rationality: “It’s a place where I don’t have to check my logic and reason at the door and blindly accept things.”

Hahn said he, his wife and daughters have found “a very warm and welcoming environment” in the Stokesdale congregation, with people saying, "We’re glad to have you here, we want to walk through this period with you.”

Many of the departing churches are joining the conservative Global Methodist Church, created last year. Others are going independent or joining different denominations.

While the Global Methodist Church doesn’t have a program like the Lighthouse initiative, it has begun launching or adopting congregations that can become homes for those who want to leave the United Methodist Church but whose congregations are staying.

That was the case with the founders of Grace Methodist Church. They launched the church in January in Homosassa, Florida, after their previous congregation voted to stay in the UMC. The new church immediately affiliated with the Global Methodist Church.

Grace Methodist has been renting a former lodge hall for its services and has already started Bible studies and community outreaches, while also working to attract attendees from their neighborhood.

“We’re not there just to go to church on Sunday for an hour; we’re there to help the community," said member Neil Kline. The enthusiasm of participants is evident, he said: “They can’t wait to get to church, and they don’t want to leave.”

Farmer came out of retirement to serve as the church's pastor.

The group's previous congregation “was a good church,” Farmer said, and he wished it well. But “my struggle was with the United Methodist structure, what’s going on in the United States, particularly."

The ongoing schism has been long in the making.

The United Methodist Church — with about 6.5 million members in the United States and at least that many abroad — has long debated its bans on same-sex marriages and the ordination of openly LGBTQ clergy.

The denomination has repeatedly upheld the bans, largely through the voting strength of the growing, more conservative churches abroad. But conservatives chose to form a new denomination amid growing defiance of the bans in U.S. churches.

More than 3,500 U.S. congregations have received their local conferences’ permission to disaffiliate from the UMC, according to United Methodist News Service. With conference season underway, disaffiliations are closing in on 4,000 and could rise even more by the end of the year, said the Rev. Jay Therrell, president of the Wesleyan Covenant Association, a conservative group advocating for departing congregations.

That’s a fraction of the United Methodists’ 30,000 U.S. churches, though several of the departing congregations are among the largest in their states.

Therrell said he had no problem with the Lighthouse concept but renewed his call to allow churches to disaffiliate on reasonable terms.

“I want everyone to be in the theological home that is the best fit,” Therrell said. “Certainly, the United Methodist Church is welcome to try to create churches to do that. I hope they would respect traditionalists and allow us to get to the place where we need to be.”

In the Arkansas Conference, more than 100 churches — out of roughly 600 total — have received permission to disaffiliate. That leaves parts of the state with few or no remaining United Methodist congregations, said the Rev. Michael Roberts, director of the conference’s new Restart Initiative, which is hoping to enlist congregations to be Beacon churches. Such churches would invite self-described “exiles, refugees, nomads” to worship services, help them start home groups or develop other ways to keep them connected.

“We’re just really simply inviting churches to consider how they can provide this kind of hospitality,” Roberts said. “I love the word ‘hospitality’ because the word ‘hospital’ comes from that word. It is about providing healing."

In the Western Pennsylvania Conference, 17 congregations officially became Lighthouse congregations as of May 1.

About a third of the estimated 800 churches in the Western Pennsylvania Conference — a sprawling 23-county region — are seeking to have their disaffiliations approved at the conference's June annual meeting, according to Bishop Cynthia Moore-Koikoi.

“There have been very few votes where it was unanimous,” she said. For those on the short end of those votes — sometimes described as pilgrims — the Lighthouse congregations offer places where they can join or just find temporary harbor until they figure out next steps.

But Lighthouse churches aren’t places to settle into old routines, she said.

“This has been an opportunity to really think about folks who are unchurched, and how this nucleus of people looking for a church home might help us discern needs in the community and create faith communities” to reach people in new ways.

Added B.T. Gilligan, senior pastor at Nixon United Methodist Church, a Lighthouse congregation in Butler, Pennsylvania: “I really hope this extends and goes far beyond the disaffiliation, but allows for people who have been hurt by churches for all different kinds of reasons.”

Kansas Methodist churches vote to split from denomination

HERINGTON — On Tuesday, Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renaming of the Herington post office as the Captain Emil J. Kapaun Memorial Post Office Building. 

Mann sponsored the legislation to rename the Herington Post Office in honor of Father Kapaun.&nbsp;

On the day after Memorial Day,&nbsp; Rep. Mann gathered with Kansans to celebrate the life and legacy of Father Kapaun, a man of God who showed incredible bravery and selflessness in his service. My prayers are with the Kapaun family as we celebrate Father Kapaun’s life and sacrificial love. May the Captain Emil J. Kapaun Post Office Building in Herington serve as a reminder of that great love and as an inspiration to do likewise for generations to come.

Just after 7p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 300 block of N. 16th Street in Manhattan.

A 20-year-old man reported his unlocked truck was entered and his Canik SF 9mm pistol and ammunition inside were stolen. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $470.

On May 26, RCPD filed a report for burglary involving&nbsp; a.38 revolver and 20 rounds of ammunition taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 2700 block of Brittany Terrace in Manhattan.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers filed a report for forgery and making false information in the 2300 block of Stagg Hill Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 42-year-old man, Briggs Auto Group and Consumer Portfolio Services reported a 41-year-old man forged the victim's signature in January 2023 to purchase a vehicle worth approximately $18,000 through Briggs to include a loan contract and financing for the vehicle through Consumer Portfolio Services.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club members were told by Cecil Aska, Junction City Brigade General Manager, that the first game will be played at the historic Rathert Field in Junction City on June 1. The game will begin at 7:00 PM . Rather Field was a W.P.A. Project built in 1937 as a part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.

The Brigade was originally formed in 2012 and played their first game in 2013.&nbsp; Cecil stated that “since 2013 the Brigade has won the Cowdin Cup six times. The Cowdin Cup is like the Super Bowl for our level of baseball.”

The Junction City Brigade is in the Mid-Plains League. Some of the teams in the league include the Midwest A’s, Topeka Jacks, Hays Larks, Topeka Warhawks, the Sabetha Bravos, and others. This season’s schedule is found on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JCBrigade">Junction City Brigade Facebook page</a>.

The opposing team on June 1 will be the KC Knights. Tickets may be purchased at the gate.

Optimist hear about Brigade; make band donation 

FORT RILEY - On Monday, Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division observed Memorial Day with a wreath-laying and ceremony at the Fort Riley Post Cemetery.

1st Infantry Division, Command Sgt. Maj. Chris Mullinax and US Senator Roger Marshall, recognized the importance of continuing Memorial Day observances while addressing the crowd.

Command Sgt. Maj. Mullinax spoke of his experience during his first deployment to Afghanistan, which began in December 2001, and his thoughts following the loss of three Soldiers from his unit just a few months later.

Sen. Marshall spoke about the more than 13,000 fallen Big Red One Soldiers who have lost their lives during the 106 years the 1st Infantry Division has been in existence.

Maj. Gen. John V. Meyer, Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, then joined Command Sgt. Maj. Mullinax and Senator Marshall to place a wreath in honor of those who died in service to the United States and are buried at Fort Riley.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a motorcycle theft and continue to look for the suspect.

Officers recovered a 2003 Kawasaki ZX900F2 motorcycle on May 26, 2023, in the 2100 block of Casement Road in Manhattan.

The motorcycle had been reported stolen from the 500 block of N. 5th Street in Manhattan on May 23.&nbsp;

A 38-year-old man was listed as the suspect when officers observed him riding the motorcycle in the area of Casement Road after officers engaged him, he abandoned the motorcycle and ran. 

Officers were unable to locate him but found marijuana, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia in a box on the motorcycle.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged burglary in Manhattan.

Just after 6a.m. May 26, officers filed a report for burglary in the 2700 block of Brittany Terrace in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 24-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman reported the her unlocked car was entered and the man's .38 revolver, 20 rounds of ammunition, and $15 cash inside were stolen. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $435. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. RCPD reports another gun taken from unlocked car

Due to a vote on the debt limit deal, Rep. Jake LaTurner announced Monday evening that he is postponing his "Coffee With Your Legislator" event that was scheduled for Tuesday in Junction City.&nbsp;

According to LaTurner's office the event will be rescheduled on a date that is to be decided.

KONZA Prairie Community Health Center&nbsp; All are invited to Family Fun &amp; Fit Day on Friday, June 2 from 9 am to Noon at Playground Park – 5th &amp; Eisenhower in Junction City.

The event is free and open to the public. According to Konza Prairie Community Health Center WIC dietitian and event organizer Kalie Brownlee, Family Fun-n-Fit Day will promote community events and resources, offer fun family fitness activities, inspire healthy choices for all ages, and encourage safety awareness.

Attendees will find 35 community organizations with games, crafts, and information, a fitness activity area, and local first responder vehicles. Kids can get a free bike helmet or life jacket, and free lunch – while supplies last.

Whether you’re new to the community or have been here a while, Brownlee feels that this event is a great opportunity for families to learn what’s available. “There are so many great ways to stay active, get healthy, and be involved in the community and we’re glad to help make these connections,” she said.

Family Fun-n-Fit Day at Playground Park planned

Allen Dinkel, City Manager Over the past two or so months we have discussed different parts of the financial side of the City. No doubt we will get back to that over the next few weeks as we enter the “Meat” of the Budget season as we put together the 2024 City Budget. &nbsp;However, today we will take a break and cover a couple of topics that are being focused on to a greater level at this time of the year. &nbsp;

Even though we are not in any sort of “Monsoon Season” there has been some recent rains here and the grass and weeds are taking off and growing. Sara and Steve in the City Codes Department have been busy and are “out and about” in the City finding the unsightly vegetation. &nbsp;This is no easy task as there have been a few hundred “abatement” letters being sent out to property owners who need to cut and take care of their properties. &nbsp;Of course, it is pretty easy to see if the grass and weeds need to be addressed, but for staff the work just begins there. They also grab picture of the nuisance to add to their documentation. &nbsp;

When they get back to the office, they have to identify who owns the property. They use the County parcel map to determine the owner and prepare a letter. This letter, in accordance to City Code and State Statute, is sent via certified letter. Yes, it is an added expense, but first of all is required and secondly, there has been more than one occasion when a person says they did not receive notice and the staff whips out the receipt the letter was received and signed for. Yes, there are letters which are returned. In some cases, the owners have moved and did not&nbsp;have their mail forwarded. Then there are a few who think if they don’t&nbsp;sign for their letter,&nbsp;they don’t have to address the problem. However, when the letter is returned by the post office, the City may move forward as well. &nbsp;Once a letter is received by the property owner, they have 7 days to mow the weeds. &nbsp;Of course, the weeds are even taller by then. If it is not done by that time, the City has the parcel mowed and the bill is sent to the property owner. If it is not paid, the fee is sent to the county to be added as an assessment on the property taxes. &nbsp;

Not only is the cost of the mowing billed, but there is also an administrative fee. Someone complained to me the other day about this fee. Simply take care of your property and the City does not have to spend the time and effort to address the code violation.&nbsp;No one in our office wants to take of your property, but we will take action if you fail to do so.&nbsp;In &nbsp;the case of tall weeds and grass only one notice has to be sent each calendar &nbsp;year. So once a notice is received as mentioned above, a second notice is not needed if the owner allows the weeds to get tall again and mowing can be ordered to be done.&nbsp;

The other nuisance which staff deals with is basically junk and debris on a property. &nbsp;The same process for weeds is followed. &nbsp;Again, pictures are taken, and a file of the property is kept. If the nuisance is not taken care of, the items are removed from the property and the costs are billed to the property owner. &nbsp; Again, pictures are taken at the time when the abatement is made and also if the property is cleaned and the items are hauled away. These type of nuisances can be expensive. In the past couple of years, we have had properties where over $5,000 was spent to remove the nuisances. &nbsp;Yes, the costs are billed to the property owner and if not paid assessed to the property taxes, However at times the taxes are not paid, and the property ultimately goes to a “Tax Sale” and is sold for much less than the assessments. &nbsp;Then, we as taxpayers have to “foot” the bill for those who did not take care of their property. The Codes Department also takes action if there are vehicles on properties that are not current with their registration.&nbsp;And don’t forget trees and shrubs that are causing issues and have to be addressed.&nbsp;

One other&nbsp;task&nbsp;this department&nbsp;deals withis structures that are “Unsafe or Dangerous and Unfit for Human Use or Habitation”. Last year there were 10 structures that were addressed and this year the list grew to 16. This process has more steps that have to be taken. &nbsp;Structures are evaluated and then when a list is made, not only are the owners of the property identified, but also anyone who may have an interest in the property such as a lien holder. &nbsp;Again, many pictures are taken. A report is made to the city Commission and a Resolution is adopted &nbsp;for each property which sets a Public hearing. &nbsp;This resolution is sent, again by certified mail to all parties and also have to be published twice, two weeks in a row, in the official City newspaper. &nbsp;A public hearing is then held by the City Commission where the property owner has the ability to give their side of the “story”. &nbsp;The commission then decides is the structure needs to be demolished or repaired and a time table is put into place.&nbsp;Another resolution is adopted for each priority, sent by certified letter, but only has to be published 1 time.&nbsp;Again, this is not an inexpensive process. &nbsp;Of course, some property owners do take care of the issue, but others don’t, and the costs become that of the City. As the City’s financial status improves, more can be done. In 2024, $200,000 is budgeted for unsafe and dangerous structures.&nbsp;

Yes, we get complaints that the City does not address nuisance and structures as it should, but you also have to be able to budget the process. On the other hand, we have those property owners &nbsp;and residents who feel they are being “picked on”. &nbsp;

It all boils down to one thing, if property owners acted responsibly, we would not have to worry about taking care of these issues. Remember, it is “Your” tax dollars have to pay to do what the property owner fails to do. &nbsp;

If it is not paid, the fee is sent to the county to be added as an assessment on the property taxes. &nbsp;Not only is the cost of the mowing billed, but there is also an administrative fee. Someone complained to me the other day about this fee. Simply take care of your property and the City does not have to spend the time and effort to address the code violation.&nbsp;No one in our office wants to take of your property, but we will take action if you fail to do so.&nbsp;In &nbsp;the case of tall weeds and grass only one notice has to be sent each calendar &nbsp;year. So once a notice is received as mentioned above, a second notice is not needed if the owner allows the weeds to get tall again and mowing can be ordered to be done.&nbsp;The other nuisance which staff deals with is basically junk and debris on a property. &nbsp;The same process for weeds is followed. &nbsp;Again, pictures are taken, and a file of the property is kept. If the nuisance is not taken care of, the items are removed from the property and the costs are billed to the property owner. &nbsp; Again, pictures are taken at the time when the abatement is made and also if the property is cleaned and the items are hauled away. These type of nuisances can be expensive. In the past couple of years, we have had properties where over $5,000 was spent to remove the nuisances. &nbsp;Yes, the costs are billed to the property owner and if not paid assessed to the property taxes, However at times the taxes are not paid, and the property ultimately goes to a “Tax Sale” and is sold for much less than the assessments. &nbsp;Then, we as taxpayers have to “foot” the bill for those who did not take care of their property. The Codes Department also takes action if there are vehicles on properties that are not current with their registration.&nbsp;And don’t forget trees and shrubs that are causing issues and have to be addressed.&nbsp;One other&nbsp;task&nbsp;this department&nbsp;deals withis structures that are “Unsafe or Dangerous and Unfit for Human Use or Habitation”. Last year there were 10 structures that were addressed and this year the list grew to 16. This process has more steps that have to be taken. &nbsp;Structures are evaluated and then when a list is made, not only are the owners of the property identified, but also anyone who may have an interest in the property such as a lien holder. &nbsp;Again, many pictures are taken. A report is made to the city Commission and a Resolution is adopted &nbsp;for each property which sets a Public hearing. &nbsp;This resolution is sent, again by certified mail to all parties and also have to be published twice, two weeks in a row, in the official City newspaper. &nbsp;A public hearing is then held by the City Commission where the property owner has the ability to give their side of the “story”. &nbsp;The commission then decides is the structure needs to be demolished or repaired and a time table is put into place.&nbsp;Another resolution is adopted for each priority, sent by certified letter, but only has to be published 1 time.&nbsp;Again, this is not an inexpensive process. &nbsp;Of course, some property owners do take care of the issue, but others don’t, and the costs become that of the City. As the City’s financial status improves, more can be done. In 2024, $200,000 is budgeted for unsafe and dangerous structures.&nbsp;Yes, we get complaints that the City does not address nuisance and structures as it should, but you also have to be able to budget the process. On the other hand, we have those property owners &nbsp;and residents who feel they are being “picked on”. &nbsp;It all boils down to one thing, if property owners acted responsibly, we would not have to worry about taking care of these issues. Remember, it is “Your” tax dollars have to pay to do what the property owner fails to do. &nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage in Manhattan.

Just after 7a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 700 block of Midland Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Three men reported a known suspect damaged multiple walls, ceilings, and electrical outlets at a home in that location. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $30,000, according to the RCPD.

“K-State Salina is leading the way in training pilots, and this federal investment will help the Aerospace and Technology Campus expand its learning opportunities,” Moran said. “Training the next generation of pilots will make certain our aviation industry continues to meet the demands of air travel and transportation.”

These federal resources build on a corporate investment from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. Moran&nbsp;participated&nbsp;in the announcement of the $10 million investment in 2022.

MANHATTAN - On Thursday, the Fort Riley Education Services hosted the 2023 Combined Graduation Ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan.

More than 60 graduates walked across the stage receiving their diplomas.

Higher educations institutions represented at the ceremony will include&nbsp;Barton Community College,&nbsp;&nbsp;Central Texas College,&nbsp;Kansas State University, Southwestern College, Upper Iowa University and various other distance learning colleges.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Combined Graduation Ceremony is hosted by Fort Riley Education Services to honor those who have accomplished a personal standard of excellence; inspire Soldiers, family members and Army civilians to continue pursuing higher education; showcase the many educational opportunities available at Fort Riley; and emphasize the importance of continuing education.

Graduates received certificates or associates, bachelor’s or master’s degree from their respective colleges and universities. Col. John B. Mountford, Deputy Commanding Officer for Maneuver, 1st Infantry Division, will deliver the commencement address.
