WABAUNSEE COUNTY—A man who traveled from North Carolina to meet an underage girl in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, was sentenced Tuesday in district court, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff.

Derrick Yarnell Mayfield, 21, was sentenced to 41 months in prison, must register as a sex offender for life and have lifetime post release supervision.

In October of 2022, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's office was alerted to possible exploitation of a child.

Deputies responded to investigate at a residence in the 400 Block of East Flint Hills Drive, Lake Wabaunsee.&nbsp; Investigators made contact with Derrick Yarnell Mayfield of Henderson North Carolina.

Mayfield flew from North Carolina to meet the young Wabaunsee County girl. Mayfield had originally made contact with her online. Evidence discovered at the home led to Mayfield's arrest.

Mayfield was originally held on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties w/ child, intercourse with child, Unlawful possession of visual depiction of child and Contribute to a child's misconduct, according to online jail records. Deputies took the child into protective custody.

MANHATTAN - On Friday, May 19, McCain Auditorium will host the Thundering Cats Big Band with the performance beginning at 7:30pm.

In 2009, the Thundering Cats Big Band was founded in Manhattan.

The band consists of local musicians from all walks of life with the goal of keeping big band music alive.

Directed by Frederick Burrack, the Thundering Cats Big Band performs in the Spring and Fall for community events and supports educational and outreach programs through McCain Auditorium.

This concert is also to provide the opportunity for community members to sing with the big band in a grand event on the McCain Stage.&nbsp;Approximately 16 singers from around the community will be singing songs like “Misty,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Satin Doll” and many other favorites. The band will be playing “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Bill Bailey,” and more.

Tickets are $10 per person plus fees and taxes and are available online at&nbsp;<a href="https://mccain.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">mccain.k-state.edu</a>&nbsp;or at the Ticket Office in the newly expanded McCain lobby from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. Geary County landfill open Sat. for spring cleanup

Run for the Wall, the&nbsp; motorcycle ride to the National&nbsp; Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. rolls into Junction City this coming Sunday for it's annual stop-over visit.&nbsp; Heritage Park downtown is the home for the Kansas Vietnam War Memorial.

The riders are expected to arrive around 5:45 p.m. coming off I-70 and making their way north on Washington&nbsp; Street to Heritage Park, according to event coordinator David Eckel.&nbsp; They will be greeted by 300 waving flags being held by volunteers.&nbsp; Following their arrival there will be a ceremony in the park with remarks from <a href="https://patproctor4ks.com/">Kansas&nbsp; State&nbsp; Representative Pat Proctor</a>, Leavenworth, KS, himself a retired U.S. Army Colonel.

Following the events in Heritage Park, the Run for the&nbsp; Wall riders will be served dinner at the Eagles Lodge as well as breakfast the following morning prior to their departure.

Run for the Wall rolls into Junction City this Sunday

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 9:30a.m. Tuesday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Buick LeSabre driven by 90-year-old Charles Richard Thomas of Eskridge was&nbsp; southbound in the 29500 Block of Keene Eskridge Road. 

The car veered off of the west side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle traveled across both lanes of traffic,&nbsp; entered the east ditch causing the vehicle to overturned.

EMS transported Thomas to Stormont Vail where he was pronounced deceased. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Wabaunsee County man dies after car overturns

MANHATTAN - A Manhattan man was arrested around 7:45 pm on Tuesday evening for rape and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Twenty-nine year old, Dameon Skidmore, of Manhattan was arrested in connection with an incident involving a 15-year-old girl known to him.

Skidmore is being held at the Riley County Jail without bond, while awaiting his first appearance in Riley County District Court.

Due to the nature of the crime, the Riley County Police Department will not be releasing any further information about the incident.

The Geary County Historical Society will be hosting its May STEAM Saturday program this Saturday, May 20th&nbsp;from 1:00-3:30 p.m. at the museum, 530 N. Adams Street, Junction City.

 This month’s programming will focus on water. Participants will create their own aquifer, paint a historic image of local rivers, and compete in a water tower building competition. They can also tour the museum to learn about the Milford Dam.

No RSVP is required for STEAM Saturday and participation is always free. STEAM Saturday is sponsored by United Way of Junction City Geary County.

K-State breaks ground for Agronomy Research and Innovation Center

GEARY COUNTY - Just before 11:00 am on Monday morning, emergency crews were dispatched to Interstate 70 between the Washington Street exit and the US-77 exit for a semi-truck which had jack-knifed.

Westbound Interstate 70 traffic was restricted to just one lane of traffic while crews worked to remove the semi-truck from the median.

Traffic was backed up to the Grandview Plaza exit while the lanes were reduced.

Junction City Fire Department posted a reminder on social media for drivers to slow down, wear seat belts and drive with headlights on when it rains.

The "Sons of the American Legion" (S.A.L.) will host a breakfast with the funds raised benefiting the Junction City Pacesetters Special Olympics Team.

The breakfast is scheduled for 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 27th at the American Legion Post 45, 201 E. 4th Street, Junction&nbsp; City.&nbsp; Menu will include biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, ham, coffee and juice.

MANHATTAN, KAN&nbsp;—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect who allegedly broke into a Manhattan&nbsp;apartment armed with a shotgun.

Just before 9a.m. Friday, the Riley County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an active burglary in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place in Manhattan, according to a media release.

RCPD officers quickly arrived on scene and found 31-year-old Chancellor Copenhaver behind the apartment along with the residents who are known to him.

Copenhaver sustained a minor head injury during a struggle with a 47-year-old man inside the apartment. The investigation revealed Copenhaver had grabbed and forced a 20-year-old woman out of the apartment during the struggle. 

It was also reported that Copenhaver had contacted the woman and went to her residence multiple times against her will after being trespassed. Neither of the victims were treated for injuries.

Copenhaver was taken into custody and transferred to Via Christi by Riley County EMS for treatment of his injury. He was later released and transferred to the Riley County Jail on requested charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and stalking. He is being held on a total bond of $250,000.

Wamego man allegedly broke into home armed with shotgun

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library will welcome author Roxie Yonkey to the library on Tuesday, May 23 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the library meeting room.&nbsp;&nbsp;She will meet and greet members of the public, sign copies of her book,&nbsp;Secret Kansas:&nbsp;&nbsp;A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure. and do a presentation on this title about the Sunflower State.&nbsp;&nbsp;This program requires no advance registration and is free and open to the public.

Kansas author to visit DBPL

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30a.m. Sunday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Chevy passenger vehicle driven by Charles Wayne Lynch, 41, Wichita Falls, Texas merged onto&nbsp;&nbsp;onto eastbound Interstate 70 near Washington Street from the on ramp and came to a complete stop in the left lane. 

A 2017 Chevy Silverado driven by Shelby Noel&nbsp;Freitas, 30, Palmyra, Indiana, and puling a fifth wheel was eastbound in the left lane of Interstate 70, rapidly approaching the Chevy. 

The Silverado started to brake hard to avoid striking the Chevy. A 2024 Kenworth semi driven by Christopher M. Sacher, 48, Abilene was also&nbsp; eastbound in the left lane behind the Silverado.

The Kenworth started to brake hard, swerved to avoid the Silverado but struck the fifth wheel the Silverado was towing. The impact caused the trailer to catch fire.

EMS transported Freitas to the Geary County Hospital.&nbsp; There were no other injuries. All three drivers and a passenger in the Silverado were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jon Austin, DVM, with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital, explained that the veterinary tranquilizer Xylazine that is now being found mixed with fentanyl in some human overdose cases has long been in use in practice on animals.

"It's a medication that's been around a long time," Austin said. "It's very, very helpful and has a good purpose in veterinary medicine. It's used both in large animal and in small animal, for longer term injectable&nbsp;anesthesia. It's put in combination with other medications to make it an anesthetic. It acts more as a tranquilizer or sedative by itself. It's a very potent drug. Its effect is long lasting."

It's especially important for large animals like cows and horses when you can't take an operating room out to the pasture.

"A small amount of it in a needle will put a 1500 pound animal on their heels for long enough to do surgery procedures," Austin said. "I use it frequently in combination with another one called ketamine to do painful surgeries on cats. They will sleep an hour through an active surgery procedure and then they will be groggy and with good pain relief, good analgesia and sedation for five or six more hours."

Austin's concern is the off label usage of the drug by humans may eventually make it unavailable to vets.

"When people start doing things they shouldn't with things, oftentimes the solution for the government is just to take it away," Austin said. "Then, we're left without something to give that kind of help to us for procedures and things we need to do on our pets. I cannot imagine what recreational purpose someone might have for that medication, unless being unconscious and knocked out for hours is what they are looking for. I don't know. I don't understand that, myself."

Vet: Xylazine is not for human use

The storm that came through this area earlier this week reminds us of the reason there is a need for the Storm Water Utility. We will continue this week with discussing other City utilities and how they all fit into the overall operation of the City of Junction City. Storm water is one of those charges that shows up on your City bill each month, that we probably get the most questions about.

In August of 2017, the City adopted Ordinance No. G-1027 relating to Stormwater Management. In that time period there was a push at the Federal and State levels on the quality of storm water. I won’t go into all of the science and regulations, but terms such as the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Process (NPDES) became common as the quality of the water that runs into the storm system in communities was being focused on. Basically, the City became responsible for the quality of storm water and actions were put in place to improve on the quality. Run-off from construction sites became a concern and efforts were made to other practices in place to eliminate issues in storm water. Even today we do focus on quality and samples are collected on a routine basis of the water in the rivers “above” the city and also “below” as storm water leaves the City. Again, there are many regulations to follow.

Back in that time period, many cities formed a Strom Water Utility. A stormwater utility is a legally authorized "public enterprise fund", adopted by ordinance and is similar to the water and sewer utilities. It was established to finance the construction and/or reconstruction of portions of the storm

water system in that given City. Storm water fees are charged just water or waste water fees.

I was not in Junction City when this Utility was put into place and charges were assessed. I understand there was “thoughts” that a storm water treatment plant was needed. Not an issue yet, nor do I think it is an issue in the near future. Of course, that is also dependent on the efforts we all make to keep the storm water “clean”. There are some that apparently felt that the storm water utility fees were only going to be for a few years. I have no idea how that was ever a possibility as there is a constant need to improve the storm water system as well eliminate erosion issues.

The most recent storm water project was the repair of Price’s Ravine om the east side of North Jackson Street between the City’s Park Department Building and the City Water Plant. Erosion over the years had eaten into the north bank and the chain link fence on the “Park’s” side was literally hanging in the air and before long the erosion could have affected the building foundation under the building. On the south side the erosion was moving the water stream towards the lime lagoons which are to the north of the water plant. Simply, we would have had a “mess”. This project was necessary, but not cheap and the total cost of the work was in the $1 Million dollar range.

Another recent project was the improvement of drainage on Eisenhower Street. Again, needed to be done, but costs exceeded $300K. One project that maybe in the future is the improvement of Rimrock Dam at Homer’s Pond. Personally, I think it is not an issue, but the Kansas Department of Agriculture declared it as a “High-Risk” Dam. If the pond held just a little less water it would maybe not be an issue, but they are looking at their regulations. We will see what happens with that project in the future.

The storm water utility fees are on each month’s “City” bill. For those parcels without a “City” account, such as a vacant lot, the fee is treated as a “Special Assessment” and billed to the property taxes. For residential properties the fee is $7 per month, but business and commercial properties are higher based

on square feet of the property. Even though not as well understood, this utility is important to the City.

The other City utility service is trash. Now there are cities who do not operate a “City” owned service, but we do here in Junction City. What makes us a bit different is that private companies are also allowed to operate in the City. Frankly, I don’t know how that ever happened, but never the less it is done that way here. The downside of this is that on any given street, there could be 2 or 3 trash trucks on the street or alley in any given part of town. That of course can cause more wear and tear on these surfaces. The crews on our trash trucks could be consider “unsung heroes ” as they work with garbage and other their work is done in “less than ideal” weather conditions. The City trash is hauled to the Geary County Transfer Station and then shipped to a Landfill near Topeka.

I mentioned above there are private firms who also “do” trash here. Of course, we understand they operate the business to make a profit. This profit is never a benefit to our community. On the other hand, on the City trash service, fund transfers are made to the General Fund. In recent years some of these funds are being utilized to make sidewalk and alley improvements. There will be an alley project in 3 blocks in the business district on 6th Street later this year.

We have made it through all of the utilities. I hope I have shared some good info. In the coming weeks we will see if we can tie this all together in the City “package.”

RILEY COUNTY - A Manhattan man was killed on Friday afternoon following a motorcycle versus truck crash on Tuttle Creek Blvd at West 92nd Avenue.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol online crash logs, at just before 4:00 pm on Friday, a 2016 Ford F-150, driven by 66-year-old Donald E. Oriley of Hopkins Missouri, was preparing to turn left onto West 92nd Avenue. Oriley was not injured in the crash.

While waiting to make the turn a 2012 Harley Davidson FLHX motorcycle, driven by 66-year-old, Daniel G. Davis of Manhattan, collided with back left corner of the F-150.

Davis was ejected from the motorcycle, and died at the scene.

A third vehicle, a 2018 Dodge Journey, driven by 15-year-old Hope Wilson of Wakefield, was struck by debris as a result of the original crash. Wilson was not injured in the crash.

Wilson's passenger, 52-year-old Shannon D. Wilson, also of Wakefield was not injured in the crash.&nbsp;

Tuttle Creek Boulevard was closed for a few hours while emergency crews worked the scene of the crash, the roadway was reopened around 7:30 pm.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a rental car theft in Manhattan.

Just after 8a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 5500 block of Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Enterprise Leasing reported an unknown man stole a grey 2021 BMW X2 worth approximately $39,000. The car was later found totaled in Lawrenceville, Ga. around 4:00 p.m. by local police. 

Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Crime Stoppers.</a>&nbsp;Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
