MANHATTAN - For more than 50 years, a Manhattan man has been adding to his collection of Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia, which now totals more than 1,300 pieces.&nbsp;

More than two years ago, Curt Herrman applied to the Guinness World Records hoping to be named the owner of the 'Largest collection of Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia,' a designation that did not exist, prior to him being notified<a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/704424-largest-collection-of-kanas-city-chiefs-memorabilia"> he is now a 'Guinness World Record' holder</a>.&nbsp;

"It was obviously elation, actually I got the notice at 5:37 a.m. a week ago last Friday...because, well, because they are based out of England, and so they're way ahead of me...but you know, they kept coming back every time I would send them something they would come back and say, 'ok, we need to have this; well, can you send us a close up of this.' and I had to make a video of everything, of me counting everything, and so when I got that email that morning, I thought, 'oh, here we go again, what else do you need?' and it was like 'Congratulations, You've now been awarded the World Record,' so it was a very happy moment." Curt Herrman says.&nbsp;

Curt received his first Chiefs item, a football, following the Chiefs' Super Bowl 4 victory.&nbsp;

"When I was 9 years old in 1970, the Chiefs won Super Bowl 4, and that year for my birthday I got a football for my birthday, and then ever since then, every year, Christmas, holidays, birthdays everybody just gave me Chiefs stuff. And over the years, I collected quite a bit and...but at one point a lot of it was in storage, but when my kids went to college, we became empty-nesters, and my wife told me 'Stop buying more stuff, you have...you don't even know what all you have.' And so, I got everything and started taking pictures and started hanging stuff up on the walls and next thing you know I had realized I had about 650, almost 700 items." Curt says.&nbsp;

Curt's collection contains no duplicates, any duplicates he receives he gives to friends who are working to build their own collections.&nbsp;

As of September 19th, Herrman's collection contains 1,312 Kansas City Chiefs items.&nbsp;

Herrman's collection keeps growing thanks to gifts, donations and things he finds while he's out and about.&nbsp;

Curt says as a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan, he would love to meet someone from the team and have them visit his collection.&nbsp;

Junction City Commissioners were questioned Tuesday night about the proposed slaughterhouse project that has been in the spotlight in recent months. One of the opponents to the project, Susan Kamm, noted that nothing has been heard recently, and asked what is going on. City Manager Allen Dinkel responded, "Nothing has been announced yet. That's all we can say at this time."

Kamm asked if the commission will discuss the project with the community or just forge ahead without allowing community input. Dinkel then stated a lot of processes will have to happen. Mayor Jeff Underhill said that there will be hearings and different zoning issues that could arise.

Kamm said opponents have been working on their end. "We just hope that you guys will come out and be forthcoming with the people that elected you."

During later discussion in the city commission meeting Dinkel noted that with any economic development project everything takes time, but companies making a large investment and they do not want to release information to their competitors. "I don't believe the City has ever, ever, ever held stuff back at least in recent years on what we're going to do but you have to put it all in place. You talk about a livestock harvesting facility, you're talking probably about half billion dollar investment by somebody. "Dinkel added information would be released when times are right.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Three died in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Kenworth semi driven by Dwight E. Morey, 63, Fairmont, Oklahoma, was southbound on Kansas 15 at 1500 Avenue.&nbsp;

The semi struck a 2006 Dodge Dakota driven by Joel C. Hynes, 54, Junction City, who was southbound on Kansas 15 and had made a u-turn at 1500 Avenue. 

After impact the pickup&nbsp; entered the east ditch and flipped onto its roof. The semi entered the east ditch and came to rest in a field.

Hynes and passengers in the pickup Mary L. Hynes, 64,&nbsp; and John L. Hynes, 78, Coal Valley, Illinois, were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp; Martin Becker Funeral Home. Morey was not transported for treatment of a minor injury. John Hynes was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

GEARY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects from Milford in connection to an alleged rape.

&nbsp;Just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday deputies responded to the Junction City High School in reference to a possible rape that occurred at a residence on Old Highway 77 in the early morning hours, according to a media release from the Sheriff's Department.

Following their investigation, deputies arrested 45-year-old Christopher James Beem on requested rape charges and 40-year-old Melissa Sue Beem on charges of aiding, abetting rape.&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. –&nbsp;<a href="http://morrishillelementary.usd475.org/" target="_blank">Morris Hill Elementary</a>, in Fort Riley, has been named a 2022&nbsp;<a href="https://nationalblueribbonschools.ed.gov/" target="_blank">National Blue Ribbon School</a>&nbsp;by the U.S. Department of Education. The Geary County USD 475 public school was one of only three schools in the state of Kansas, and 297 nationwide, recognized Sept. 16 by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

The award affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in attaining exemplary achievement. Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models of effective school practices for state and district educators and schools throughout the nation.

The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories: “Exemplary High-Performing” and “Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing.” Morris Hill is being recognized as an “Exemplary High-Performing” school for demonstrating outstanding overall academic achievement.

“This is really exciting for the Morris Hill Panthers,” said Morris Hill Principal Melisa Burgess. “Our staff works hard to create positive relationships that build trust as we welcome families from around the world, and we are supportive of one another and care about our students’ academic and social-emotional success.”

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Morris Hill Elementary, and we are very proud of the staff and administrators’ efforts,” said USD 475 Superintendent Reginald Eggleston, Ed.D. “This recognition proves that focusing on student achievement and partnering with parents produces student success.”

USD 475 has received 11 Blue Ribbon School awards in the past 20 years. Custer Hill Elementary received it in 2002 and 2003, Sheridan and Jefferson Elementaries in 2004, Ware Elementary in 2005, Morris Hill and Eisenhower Elementaries in 2007, Franklin Elementary in 2010, and Eisenhower and Sheridan Elementaries in 2017.

Burgess and another school representative are invited to attend the National Blue Ribbon School award ceremony in Washington, D.C., in November.

CLAY COUNTY—A Clay Center man died in an accident just after 6:30a.m. Tuesday in Clay Center.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Blue Bird school bus driven by Brenda G. Peterson, 71, Clay Center, was eastbound on Lincoln Avenue approaching Sixth Street.

The driver failed to see a pedestrian identified as Harold R. Mugler, 69, Clay Center, who was walking southbound across Lincoln Avenue in the crosswalk.&nbsp; The bus hit Mugler.&nbsp; &nbsp;No students were on the bus when the accident occurred, according to USD 379.

Mugler was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Neill Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

CLAY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities and officials with USD 379 are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident involving a school bus in Clay Center.&nbsp;

Just after 7a.m. Tuesday, officials notified the Kansas Highway Patrol of the accident at 6th and Lincoln in Clay Center.&nbsp;No students were on the bus when the accident occurred, according to the school district.

The pedestrian crossing the road southbound at the time of being hit. This did not occur within a school zone, according to Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner.

Construction is progressing on a new elementary school at Fort Riley. USD 475 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston recently noted that construction is going well on the facility which will be located on the same site as the former Jefferson Elementary school. 

The district is looking at consolidating the former Jefferson with the current Morris Hill Elementary School, "so we can have one larger elementary instead of two small elementary schools."

Just after 9a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 1800 block of Fair Lane in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Weisbender Contracting reported a drill was used to puncture nine trailer tires and two dump truck tires. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.&nbsp;

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7p.m. Monday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by Walter Glen Chapman, 52, Guthrie, Oklahoma, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just west of Snokomo Road.

The pickup entered the center median and the driver overcorrected back into the eastbound lane. The pickup then left the roadway into the south ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Chapman to Stormont Vail in Topeka. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent incident involving a knife and have made an arrest.

Just after 10p.m. Sept. 16, officers filed a report for aggravated assault, domestic battery, and intimidation of a witness or victim in Manhattan,&nbsp;

 A 34-year-old man reported a 33-year-old woman slapped him and threw a knife at him. No injuries were reported. Kelsey Fenner, 33, of Manhattan was arrested on requested charges of aggravated assault, domestic battery, and intimidation of a witness or victim. Fenner was issued a total bond of $$9,000 and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2007&nbsp;a 2007 Saturn Vue driven by Kiara Islam, 18, of Manhattan turned onto Old Claflin Road and struck a 2021 Genuine moped driven by Hunter Chambers, 19, of Round Rock, Texas who was southbound on N. Manhattan Avenue.

EMS transported Chambers to Via Christi and later to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of severe injuries.

Just before 1p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 5000 block of Murray Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Two 24-year-old men reported a storage unit was broken into and an MK18 AR-15 rifle, a Century Arms AK Draco, two CZ 9mm handguns, an antique black powder revolver and ammunition were stolen.

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $7,900.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. RCPD: Multiple guns taken in Manhattan burglary

Members of&nbsp; the Geary County Historical Society celebrated 50 years for that organization with their ice cream social on Sunday. Heather Hagedorn, Executive Director, said there was a strong turnout and music provided by the Kansas Brigade Band, JCHS Jazz Band and JCHS Orchestra.&nbsp;

The event, which is a fundraiser for the Historical Society, included&nbsp; the sale of a variety of food items ranging from pies and cakes&nbsp; to hot dogs and hamburgers. "It's just a great community event.

Members of the Geary County Commission along with Society President Florence Whitebread all agreed to be pied in the face as part of the activities.

Not only is this the 50th year for the Society, but it is the 40th year for the building at 530 North Adams to serve as the location for the museum.

Historical Society celebrates 50 years

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Over the past decade or two, farmhouse décor has been an in vogue style of interior design. It makes me chuckle when I think about people who don’t live on a farm trying to create clean and pretty spaces through white wash, distressed paint and vintage hardware. Real farmhouses are rarely as desirable as this style is made out to be. I live in a real farm house and can guarantee my house won’t be featured on HGTV anytime soon. I honestly don’t think there is anything in my house that resembles the farmhouse style. However, the character that inspired designers to want to recreate the functional, no frills feel of country living, can be seen in many places in this old farmhouse. Every house has its own story. Our house’s story began as a kit house made by Sears and Roebuck that was delivered by train and assembled by its owner. We don’t know the exact year the house was delivered but estimate it was likely around the 1920s. The house was built just a few yards from the original homestead, which was still standing until about a decade ago and could fit in our kitchen. I can imagine the excitement and pride that must have been felt when this model was selected. It was a statement of perseverance and success to move from a house that was merely shelter to what was likely the equivalent of a mansion for the time. The trade-off of our house’s cool story is it was built by farmers not professional carpenters. The house is sturdy and functional, even though it has lots of little imperfections that are a product of the original DIYers. The house has seen a lot of lifestyle change in the last century: the installation of indoor plumbing, electrification and the move from wood stoves and chimneys to a furnace and air conditioning. Some of the remnants of these eras can still be seen in things like a few push button light switches or nob and tub lights from the original electrification, which have been preserved as novelties. We have also seen glimpses of the interests and taste of former home owners as we have worked to make the house our own. While tearing out outdated carpeting to take advantage of the original hardwood floors, we found decorative room mats that were in style during the time of construction. Each time we discover a new detail in the house, it’s like the house is telling the story of generations that have lived here before. Though each family who has called this house their home has been unique, they all share some things in common. The kitchen has prepared many meals for families who work the land. The floors have been tracked with mud and dirt more times than they have been clean. The rooms have played host to moments of joy, hope, and love that hopefully outweighed the times of worry and grief. The bay windows provided protection for the extreme Kansas weather that has often been a blessing and a curse. Our house is worn and imperfect because it is a place where life has been lived. Character like that can’t be replicated for a home good store. This house will never be as pretty as homes designed to look like the farmhouse style, and that’s OK with me. I am happy to live in this old farmhouse.

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Sunday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity reported a 2013 Honda Civic driven by Shelby Innes, 23, Manhattan, struck an embankment in near the intersection of Pillsbury Drive and Garibay Lane in Manhattan

The car went airborne and landed on its side. EMS transported Innes to Via Christi for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

Manhattan woman injured after car goes airborne, lands on its side

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on sex allegations. Just after 8p.m. Friday, police arrested 55-year-old Charles McMullen of Ogden on requested charges that include one count of rape in connection to a September 2, 2022, incident involving a 58-year-old female victim, according to the Riley County police department.

He is also accused of an additional count of rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery in connection to a July 5, 2022, incident involving a 51-year-old female victim. Both victims were known to McMullen.

McMullen remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $500,000.
