Central National Bank has announced the hiring of Commercial / Ag Loan Officer Tyson C. Reimer.

Reimer is from Hillsboro, Ks and a graduate from Tabor College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Human Performance and Minor’s in Coaching and Business Administration. He earned his Master’s in Business Administration from Tabor in 2022 while working as an assistant football coach at the school and serving the school as a recruiter.

“I am excited to be able to call myself a member of the Central National Bank family! To join an organization with such a rich history in serving the community is something that I don’t take lightly,” said Reimer. “I look forward to serving the customers of Central National Bank and taking time to pour into the community whenever I can.”

Reimer is engaged to Kennedy Klein, a first grade teacher in Abilene, Ks. When he’s not spending time with his fiancé he can be found hunting, fishing and golfing.

Geary County Commissioner Keith Ascher has been elected by his fellow commissioners to serve as chair for the coming year. Alex Tyson will be the vice chair and Trish Giordano secretary.

"Biggest priority is seeing the transition for the hospital. " Stormont Vail Health has assumed oversight of what was formerly Geary Community Hospital.

Ascher wants the county to get back with county road chip sealing. He also wants to work hard on funding that might be available for broadband internet to rural Geary County. "Because we really are lacking that." Redistricting will be another priority.

GEARY COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just before 7p.m. Monday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Cruze driven by Kelly E. Clements, 32, Fort Riley, was eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 just outside of Marshall Army Airfield and struck a 2017 Hyundai Elantra driven by Gary T. May, 76, Milford, head-on.

Clements was pronounced dead at the scene and she was transported to Johnson's Funeral Home. EMS transported May and a passenger in the Hyundai Donna E. May, 72, Milford, to the Stormont Flint Hills where she died. Clements was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

All westbound traffic on Interstate 70 near Fort Riley in Geary county were shut down for several hours due to the to the crash.

2 Kan. women dead after wrong-way, head-on I-70 crash

WASHINGTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating after seven deer were left to lay dead in a field in Washington County.

On January 4, a landowner reported at least five whitetail deer that had been shot with a small caliber rifle and left to lay in crop fields near Hanover Avenue and Yankee Road in Washington County, according to a social media report from Kansas Wildlife and Parks Game Wardens.

During their investigation, Game Wardens located two additional deer that had been shot and left lay. 

The deer were killed just outside the town of Hanover, with one of the deer less than 250 yards from two separate residences.

 It is believed the deer were killed the evening of January 2 or 3.

Kansas Department of Transportation has awarded the bid for a pedestrian and bicycle path to Ebert Construction for approximately $1.15 million. The path will run for one-half mile along K-18 from Karns Drive to Spring Valley Road.

Geary County elected officials take their oaths of office

 For the second consecutive month, and only the second time in 2022, the area recorded below normal temperatures. Unfortunately we also returned to the below average precipitation that has plagued the region for most of 2022.The average daily high in December was 40.9, 1.6 degrees below normal. The average overnight low was 22.8, one tenth of a degree below normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 31.9, 0.8 of a degree below normal. 

The region experienced a rather dramatic, but fortunately short-lived cold spell just before Christmas with a few evenings of below zero readings. The highest temperature for the month was 58 degrees reached, on the 13th and again on the 29th. The lowest temperature for the month was the -9 reading on the morning of the 22nd. There were two temperature records set for the month, both record high, overnight low temperatures. The low of 43 on the 12th broke the old record of 41 set in 1993. The low of 49 on the 13th broke the old record of 47 set in 2015. 

Fortunately the month was far from being record setting. The coldest December on record was in 1983 when we had a long frigid cold snap which resulted in a monthly mean temperature of only 13.6 degrees. That was the second all time coldest month on record. The all time coldest month was January 1979 with a monthly mean temperature of 12.1. The warmest December on record was just a year ago, December 2021, with a monthly mean temperature of 42.6.

While well below normal, the area did see some precipitation in December as well as enough snow that we were able to have a, barely, white Christmas. Average precipitation for December is 1.17 inches. Junction City recorded 0.57 inches and Milford Lake received 0.65 inches. This brought the year to a close with well below normal precipitation. Average annual precipitation is 33.57 inches. Junction City received 29.72 inches and Milford Lake 27.94 inches. The wettest December on record was in 2007 when an ice storm deposited 3.88 inches of precipitation on the area causing a great deal of ice damage to trees and power lines! The driest December on record was in 1976 and again in 2021 when no measurable precipitation was recorded.

 Just prior to the frigid weather’s arrival the area received 1.5 inches of snow which the cold temperatures allowed to stick around until after Christmas. This was less than one half of the normal December snowfall of 3.7 inches. It was also only the second snowfall recorded for the season. Season to date we have received 2.5 inches of snow, only half of our normal 4.8 inches through the end of December.

Overnight lows on New Year’s Day are expected to be around 18 and by the end of the month have clawed their way up to about 20 degrees. Long term average January precipitation is 0.73 inches. Chuck Otte releases December weather summary

As realignment nears completion, Ebert Construction will be closing the existing portion of Quarry Road in Geary County on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to begin eradication of the old road.

Residents may use the new roads including Goldfinch Drive and Quarry Road. Goldfinch Drive runs from the west end of Mockingbird Road north to K-57 in Geary County. The new portion of

Quarry Road runs from the K-57/U.S. 77 junction to the existing Quarry Road. The Mockingbird Road/U.S. 77 entrance is scheduled to close later this winter.

All project work is scheduled for completion in October 2023, weather permitting.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting in Manhattan have made another arrest.

Just after 3a.m. Saturday, Junction City police arrested 24-year-old Jordan Prather of Junction City on a Riley County District Court warrant for first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, according to the Riley County Police Dept. activity report.

These charges were brought by the Riley County Attorney's Office for Prather's involvement in the homicide of Joshua Wardi on February 5, 2022.&nbsp;

At that time, RCPD officers working in the police substation in Aggieville heard gunshots. The officers immediately responded in the direction of the gunfire that occurred outside a bar near 12th and Moro Street, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp; Officers found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid.

The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley. Preliminary information indicated that as the armed suspect fled, he turned the corner onto 12th Street. During the foot chase, one of the RCPD officers fired two rounds at the suspect, striking him in the leg, and causing him to stop part way down the block, between Moro Street and Laramie Street.

Officers secured the handgun and provided medical assistance. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. Wardi was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation suggests that earlier Friday night Wardi and Montgomery patronized the same bar in Aggieville. Later, while visiting outside in separate groups of friends, they engaged in a verbal altercation. At that time witnesses say Montgomery pulled out a gun and shot Wardi. Montgomery remains jailed in Riley County, according to online jail records.

The Blue Valley School District and Thermal Comfort Air reported a known male suspect stole a check the school had written to Thermal Comfort Air and cashed it. The estimated total loss is approximately $45,300. Police released no additional information early Monday.

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher Greetings from Puerto Rico! I am writing from San Juan where the American Farm Bureau Federation convention is taking place. Even though this is my first trip to Puerto Rico, I am a pretty regular world traveler with a well-established comfort zone and love for the adventures of new places. This trip has been extra fun for me because I am sharing it with three girls from the local collegiate Farm Bureau chapter at Pratt Community College. National events like this are great for professional development. The weekend has been jam-packed with big-name keynote speakers, educational workshops, a tradeshow full of potential employers and the chance to network with Kansas Farm Bureau leaders. Over the last few years, I am proud to have worked with our county Farm Bureau board to make trips like this happen for our student members. Providing travel opportunities is invaluable for the development of life and leadership skills. An equally valuable part of these trips are all of the lessons in “adulting” that come from traveling, often for the first time, without family. Even students who have previously travelled are often forced to pay attention to their surroundings, learn how to navigate airports and cities, and how to problem solve in an unfamiliar place. There have been many exciting firsts among the students this trip: first flights over the ocean, first time seeing the ocean and a whole lot of new fun experiences like tasting local cuisine, night kayaking complete with glow-in-the-dark face paint, an excursion to a natural waterfall in the rainforest, and a trip to Disney World on way back. Seeing travel through their youthful eyes has reminded me of the wonder, joy and laughter that come from new adventures. These experiences are instilling in our students a desire to step outside their comfort zones and take risks, to learn about places and cultures different from their own. It is rewarding to see the students getting excited about all the ways they can get involved in our organization in the future, demonstrate a high level of professionalism and service through their volunteer roles at the event, and have meaningful interactions with people who have lots of great life experience to share. As an advisor, I am thrilled when people on the trip complement our collegiate students for showing interest, dress sharping, acting respectfully, and being helpful. Those affirmations are showing the students how to build solid reputations and be a stand out which will serve them well in their professional lives. The lessons of this trip are like pebbles causing ripples in the water. The students will share their memories with family, peers and groups like our county Farm Bureau board, but the impact will be bigger than that. The growth will continue and influence their perspectives for years to come. My excitement for the doors being opened to my students is a bit nostalgic as travel has served as a big part of my own story. I was once young and inexperienced too until organizations in my community and industry made investments in me that changed my life and made me into the person I am today. Travel is powerful at any age but it can be direction altering for our young people to help learn who they are and who they want to become. I urge to you to look for ways to encourage and support young people in your family or community to travel. Your support might be the key that opens the door for a great future leader.

There have been many exciting firsts among the students this trip: first flights over the ocean, first time seeing the ocean and a whole lot of new fun experiences like tasting local cuisine, night kayaking complete with glow-in-the-dark face paint, an excursion to a natural waterfall in the rainforest, and a trip to Disney World on way back. Seeing travel through their youthful eyes has reminded me of the wonder, joy and laughter that come from new adventures. These experiences are instilling in our students a desire to step outside their comfort zones and take risks, to learn about places and cultures different from their own. It is rewarding to see the students getting excited about all the ways they can get involved in our organization in the future, demonstrate a high level of professionalism and service through their volunteer roles at the event, and have meaningful interactions with people who have lots of great life experience to share. As an advisor, I am thrilled when people on the trip complement our collegiate students for showing interest, dress sharping, acting respectfully, and being helpful. Those affirmations are showing the students how to build solid reputations and be a stand out which will serve them well in their professional lives. The lessons of this trip are like pebbles causing ripples in the water. The students will share their memories with family, peers and groups like our county Farm Bureau board, but the impact will be bigger than that. The growth will continue and influence their perspectives for years to come. My excitement for the doors being opened to my students is a bit nostalgic as travel has served as a big part of my own story. I was once young and inexperienced too until organizations in my community and industry made investments in me that changed my life and made me into the person I am today. Travel is powerful at any age but it can be direction altering for our young people to help learn who they are and who they want to become. I urge to you to look for ways to encourage and support young people in your family or community to travel. Your support might be the key that opens the door for a great future leader.

Just after 11:30a.m. Friday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 1200 block of Pierre Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 26-year-old man reported his Glock 36 .45 caliber handgun, cash, and other miscellaneous items were stolen from his unlocked car. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $700.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. "Home Away from Home" Adopt a Soldier program has been in existence in the Fort Riley area. Started by Big Red One veteran, Phyllis Fitzgerald, it has connected more than 180 Soldiers with more than 70 local host families.

Fitzgerald said the program offers select community leaders and members an opportunity to provide Soldiers a home-away-from-from and encourages community members an opportunity to meet the Soldiers.

In the program the Soldiers and families share meals together and attend local events together.&nbsp;

Geary County Convention &amp; Visitor's Bureau representatives will travel to Denver on Tuesday to participate in the Sportsman's Expo for the remainder of the week. Donna Price, CVB Director, said after that they will participate in the American Bus Association marketplace in February in Detroit, Michigan.

"When we go to the Sportsman's Expo we're able to talk to consumers one-on-one about fishing and hunting and trails, and all the things about Milford Lake and what we have to do."

Price noted that a lot of visitors are pulled from Denver to Geary County. "There's a large population from Denver that had been in Fort Riley, served in Fort Riley so they always like to come by our booth and talk to us."

At the ABA there will be appointments with motor coach owners and operators about activities and tours that are possible in the Geary County area.

Geary USD 475 students return to the classroom on Monday following their holiday break. Dr. Reginald Eggleston, Superintendent of Schools, said he thought the District was in a good place. "When you think about it we only have five months of school left and a lot that needs to take place between now and preparation for our state assessments, graduation that happens in May, so a lot of things that need to take place between now and the end of&nbsp; the year."

Sundown Salute&nbsp; is moving from the Fourth of July time frame to Friday - Sunday, Sept. 1-3 in 2023. Tricia Verschage, Director, explained that the decision to actually make that change was made before the 2022 celebration, which was also held in Milford.

Verschage noted that Milford is in Geary County and it is a Geary County event. "We're going to close out summer with a Sundown Salute."

Details are being finalized but there are plans for activities including three days of concerts, a carnival, a car show, vendor events and some food trucks.&nbsp; Verschage noted that businesses will be incorporated from surrounding counties as well.

There will be a Mardi Gras event fundraiser the weekend of Feb. 18. at will be at the Knights of Columbus in Junction City.

This will be the 51st Sundown Salute, which up until now has been an annual celebration during the Fourth of July period.

Election of a chair and vice-chair will be part of the reorganization of the Geary County Commission on Monday. That action is scheduled at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the County Office Building.

Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association is collecting used Christmas trees for recycling. You can deposit your natural evergreen Christmas tree without decorations on the empty lot at 14th &amp; Jackson by Jan. 20. The trees will be picked up and used for grounds and habitat projects.

According to Junction City Public Works, KDOT has moved the bid letting date to March of this year due to the construction of the E. 6th Street bridge and to coincide with KDOT’s plan to reconstruct I-70 from Exit 296 to Exit 301.&nbsp; Kaw Valley has final design plans into to KDOT.

The Junction City Commission approved the City/State agreement with KDOT for funding the project in the amount of $700,000.00 and the City’s share being 10% of the project.

Authorities said Friday at approximately 1:17 p.m. Junction City Police Officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of Forte Avenue in reference to a possible deceased individual. Upon arrival, officers located Carson Simon, an 18-Year-old man from Ogden deceased. This investigation has since been classified as a homicide. 

Anyone with information in reference to this investigation or in reference to Simon’s whereabouts between 9 pm on Thursday and 10 30 a.m. on Friday should contact the Geary County Crime Stoppers at (785) 762-8477 or The Junction City Police Department at (785) 762-5912. 

Any information provided in relation to this case may be eligible for a cash reward from Crime Stoppers. This is an active and ongoing investigation and there is no further information available at this time.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Toyota Tundra driven by Terry Dean Nelson, 65, Westmoreland, was northbound on Flush Road at U.S. 24.

The driver failed to yield right of way.&nbsp; A westbound 2021 Chevy Tahoe driven by Brenda Joyce Martin, 65, Wamego, struck the Toyota on the passenger side.

EMS transported Nelson to Stomont Vail.&nbsp; A private vehicle transported Martin for treatment. Nelson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
