Fort Riley sets aside a fall Saturday in September each year for an open house and apple day celebration. This year it will be on Sept. 24. Admission is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both the Artillery and Cavalry Parade Fields.

Ron Stewart, Coordinator for the event, said this will be the 36th apple day event on Post. "Some of the events will include the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard, weapons&nbsp; firing, static displays and of course live entertainment."

There will be military police working dog demonstration, an opportunity for robotics, along with the Meet Your Army Campaign to try and attract individuals 18-25 to join the military. "We're going to allow them to use our simulators. That's a tank simulator and that's our aviation simulator, said Stewart. "How the catch is that will have to go through our recruiters to use that."

The Family Readiness Group will sell 14 separate food items for the public to choose from. They will have apple menus plus food items such as hot dogs and hamburgers. There wlll be traditional apple pie sales by the Historical and Archaeological Society featuring pies made using Libby Custer's recipe.

If you do not have a federal or military ID you will need to go to the Visitor Control Center at the Henry Gate off of I-70, exit 301 to get a pass, or you can apply for a pass early online at the Fort Riley homepage.

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Saturday in Geary County

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Mustang driven by Robert S. Collins, 21, Sarona, Wisconsin, was&nbsp; westbound on Interstate 70 three miles east of U.S. 77.

A 2014 Subaru XV Crosstech driven by Leah B. Henderson, 43, Salina, and a 2013 Ford Fusion driven by Patrick O. Dye, 47, Marion, struck the Mustang as the driver attempted an illegal U-turn.

EMS transported a passenger in the Fusion identified as Sarah L. Dye, 38, Marion, to the Geary County Hospital. The KHP reported no other injuries. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm watch for Saturday evening

Junction City police have confirmed that they are investigating an incident at Godfrey's Indoor Shooting Range and Tactical Supply. A social media statement was released by the business on Saturday.

"This morning shortly after we opened, we had a customer ( whose identity has not been released ) take their life in the shooting range. The Junction City Police Department is continuing their investigation with this incident. We appreciate all of the support we are getting, and we ask for continued prayers for our employees. In this industry, it’s not if, but when. It is unfortunately something that we have to plan and train for, and our employees did exactly what they were supposed to do. We will remain closed in the short term for obvious reasons and will make an announcement when the shooting range will reopen.&nbsp; "

JCPD is conducting an investigation into an incident 

Junction City has been accepting applications for a parks and recreation director. City Manager Allen Dinkel noted on Friday that 16 applications had been submitted. He is hopeful someone can be named for the position by early October. There is currently an interim director in place.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has ordered Evergy to explain a $1.2 billion increase in the company’s capital spending plan filed this year compared to projections shared when the company presented its Sustainability Transformation Plan (STP) last year.&nbsp; The new order requires that a workshop to discuss the matter be scheduled by September 28 and take place before December 1, 2022.

During the workshop, which can be viewed by the public on the KCC YouTube channel, Evergy will have the opportunity to explain the necessity and impact of the proposed capital spending and answer questions from Commissioners, Commission Staff, and the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board (CURB). Prior to the workshop, Evergy is required to file updated and comprehensive financial modeling showing expected retail rate changes resulting from the continued increases in projected capital expenditures.

Evergy is required to file a Capital Investment Plan with the KCC annually. A report filed by Commission Staff in response to the 2022 report expressed concern that the expenditures outlined exceeded those reported in the STP by 21.82%. The 2022 five-year Capital Investment plan was $1 billion higher than the 2021 five-year plan, and this increased spending projection was on top of a previously announced $1 billion increase between Evergy’s 2020 and 2021 five-year plan.

Former Manhattan-Ogden para accused of additional child sex crimes 

MANHATTAN&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating attempted aggravated battery in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Just after 9:15p.m. Wednesday, police&nbsp;filed a report for attempted aggravated battery, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and possession of marijuana in 400 block of S. 5th Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County activity report.

A 23-year-old and a 43-year-old man were listed as both the victims and suspects when it was reported a gun was shot into the air. 

The 43-year-old was found to be intoxicated, and a gun and suspected marijuana were found on scene. No injuries were reported

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—The search in Wabaunsee County for a suspect in an attempted kidnapping in Russell County has shifted to Missouri.

Through an investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's office the location of the suspect in this case has been confirmed to be in Missouri, according to Sheriff Rob Hoskins.

Wabaunsee County authorities have forwarded their investigative leads to Russell County and Missouri authorities so they may continue their investigation and arrest the suspect.

WABAUNSSEE COUNTY—A manhunt in rural Wabaunsee County has ended but the sheriff's office is asking the public to continue to keep doors locked and to remove keys from vehicles, according to Wabaunsee County Sheriff&nbsp;Rob Hoskins.

Kansas Highway Patrol and Wabaunsee County Deputies were in the McFarland, Paxico areas searching for a black male subject.&nbsp;

The sheriff's office has not indicated what prompted the search or additional details.

United Way prepares for Business Blitz Week

MANHATTAN–&nbsp; Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fight in Aggieville on August 28. With assistance from Fort Riley’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), authorities have identified a suspect and made an arrest, according to the Riley County Police Department.

On Wednesday, police arrested 25-year-old Jordan Owens of Fort Riley&nbsp; for aggravated battery after he reportedly punched a 23-year-old man causing severe head injuries. 

The victim was found in the alley behind Tate’s bar in the 1100 block of Moro St. by a group of individuals who brought him to the emergency room at Via Christi.

 The victim was later transported to KU Medical Center in Kansas City for further treatment, no current medical status is available.

Owens remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s guests were Deb Breidenstein, Treasurer of the JC Community Band; Favian Gomez and his father Jorge and Mariah Wyche and her mother Ashley Todd. Favian and Mariah are the most recent JC Community Band’s Jack Moore Scholarship winners who attended the High Plains Band Camp at Fort Hays State University last July.

Deb told club members that the JC Community Band’s Board of Directors is made up of Victor Wong, President; Deb Breidenstein, Treasurer; Sue Hornbaker; Danny O’Brian and Ronald Atkinson. “The Band began playing as early as 1946 and played in Heritage Park in Junction City. Concerts were moved from Heritage Park to the air conditioned C.L. Hoover Opera House in 2008 and the attendance significantly increased.

The JC Community Band consists of players from the area ranging from eighth graders to older adults and also includes some First Division Band members. The directors of the band change each week. There is a two-hour rehearsal during the week prior to the concert on Sunday. Concerts are held at the Opera House on Sundays during the month of June”, Deb stated.

She also said that “Jack Moore was a percussionist and long-time band director in USD 475 and a scholarship was established in his name in 1998. Students must be a member of the JC Community Band for one year and then apply for the scholarship to attend a band camp. The High Plains Camp is a weeklong in July and costs $450 per attendee. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club donates $200.00 each year to help fund the scholarship. Other money comes from the selling of concessions at the local band concerts in June.”

Mariah Wyche is the daughter of Ashley Todd. Mariah is a senior at Junction City High School, plays the tenor sax and is currently a drum major with the high school band. Ashley said “a typical day at the High Plains Band Camp called for an early rise of 6:00 AM followed by a series of sectional and full band rehearsals throughout the day with faculty concerts in the evening.”

Favian Gomez is a freshman at Manhattan High School and comes to Junction City for rehearsals and concerts in June. Favian is a trumpet and French Horn player in the band. He is planning to major in computer science in college but continue with the study of his brass instruments. Favian has an interest in jazz and learned more about improvisation at the camp at Fort Hays.

Optimist Club members were reminded about the Geary County Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social this coming Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 PM on the grounds at the Museum on the corner of Sixth and Adams Streets.

The club’s Celebrations of Optimism are open to the public beginning at 6:50 AM at the Hampton Inn located at 1039 South Washington Street. First time attendees receive a free breakfast, which is served after 6:00 AM.

Favian and Mariah are the most recent JC Community Band’s Jack Moore Scholarship winners who attended the High Plains Band Camp at Fort Hays State University last July.Deb told club members that the JC Community Band’s Board of Directors is made up of Victor Wong, President; Deb Breidenstein, Treasurer; Sue Hornbaker; Danny O’Brian and Ronald Atkinson. “The Band began playing as early as 1946 and played in Heritage Park in Junction City. Concerts were moved from Heritage Park to the air conditioned C.L. Hoover Opera House in 2008 and the attendance significantly increased.The JC Community Band consists of players from the area ranging from eighth graders to older adults and also includes some First Division Band members. The directors of the band change each week. There is a two-hour rehearsal during the week prior to the concert on Sunday. Concerts are held at the Opera House on Sundays during the month of June”, Deb stated.She also said that “Jack Moore was a percussionist and long-time band director in USD 475 and a scholarship was established in his name in 1998. Students must be a member of the JC Community Band for one year and then apply for the scholarship to attend a band camp. The High Plains Camp is a weeklong in July and costs $450 per attendee. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club donates $200.00 each year to help fund the scholarship. Other money comes from the selling of concessions at the local band concerts in June.”Mariah Wyche is the daughter of Ashley Todd. Mariah is a senior at Junction City High School, plays the tenor sax and is currently a drum major with the high school band. Ashley said “a typical day at the High Plains Band Camp called for an early rise of 6:00 AM followed by a series of sectional and full band rehearsals throughout the day with faculty concerts in the evening.”Favian Gomez is a freshman at Manhattan High School and comes to Junction City for rehearsals and concerts in June. Favian is a trumpet and French Horn player in the band. He is planning to major in computer science in college but continue with the study of his brass instruments. JC Breakfast Optimist Club Learned About The JC Community Band and Scholarship

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities have recovered a motorcycle stolen in Manhattan. They are still looking for the suspect.

Just after 5p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1400 block of University Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 20-year-old man reported his 2018 Honda Grom motorcycle was stolen between September 9 and 10 while he was out of town. 

On Sept. 10,&nbsp; police recovered the motorcycle unoccupied in the 3000 block of Conrow Drive in Manhattan. The suspect fled from officers who attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of Claflin Road and Nichols Street earlier the same day for no visible tag.

The estimated total loss associated with this case was approximately $3,750.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Area employers and job seekers gathered Tuesday at the Junction City Municipal Building for the Patriot Day Career Fair. Eagle Radio was among the many employers that were represented.

Other employers ranged from the City of Junction City and Flint Hill Job Corps to USD 475, Kaw Valley Engineering and Michelin. There were more than 40 employees represented.&nbsp;
