DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a a suspect after a high-speed chase on Interstate 70.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Salina Police Department observed a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche with an expired license plate leaving the parking lot of Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, and heading north on N. Ohio Street, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

The officer attempted to stop the pickup as it was turning eastbound onto Interstate 70, but the pickup took off and a pursuit ensued. Speeds reached up to 100 mph, according to Forrester.

The officer terminated the pursuit at the Dickinson County line, but Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies were later able to stop the pickup and take the driver, identified as Tyrone Fenton, 43, of Salina, into custody on requested charges of Possession of marijuana, Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body, Possession of stimulant, Driving while a habitual violator; 3rd or subsequent conviction, Driving while suspended; 3rd or subsequent conviction, Yield emergency vehicle; Fail; Unknown circumstances, and Vehicles; Operate vehicle without registration or w/expired tag.

Requested charges in Saline County include Felony flee and elude, Speeding, Driving while suspended and a Vehicle registration violation.

Police: Kansas man jailed after 100mph chase on I-70

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack in Manhattan.

Just after 4:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery in the 400 block of Leavenworth Street in Manhattan. 

A 34-year-old man reported a known 45-year-old man stabbed him on an unspecified date.

Additional details on the incident were not released by RCPD.

The Academy is for selected high school sophomores to learn personal goal setting; leading a group in a decision making process and community leadership.  Macie’s personal goal is to become a licensed psychologist.

Kansas Leadership Center has selected 87 organizations across Kansas, including one from Junction City, as 2023 Leadership Transformation Grant partners. The grants will help the partner organizations create a culture that embraces change, tackles problems and seizes opportunities.

The grant partner from Junction City is Kansas-Oklahoma Conference, United Church of Christ.

Acoustic Junction returns to St Joseph’s Historic Church for a night of music and community on Saturday. Food and drink will be sold at 6:30pm and music will begin at 7:00pm. &nbsp;This Octoberfest themed event will feature three local music groups: The McDowell Barnburners, The Tallgrass Tunesmiths, and Chris Biggs and Ken Gustin. Baked goods and a beer list that includes: Free State Octoberfest, Heineken, Stormchaser, Free State IPA, and Hamm’s will also be available by donation.

Geary County Historical Society Curator Heather Hagedorn said all proceeds benefit the St. Joseph’s restoration project. Recent projects at the church include: new windows, roof repairs and the installation of electricity. Funds raised at this event will help cover costs for upcoming projects including: temperature control and plaster work.

St. Joseph’s Historic Church is owned by the Geary County Historical Society and the restoration is greatly supported by the McDowell Creek Community. To get to St. Joseph’s take I-70 to exit 307 and head south 2 miles. The church will be on the left. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited.

MANHATTAN - More than 80 years after being killed while serving on the USS California, Seaman Second Class Pete Turk's repatriated remains were finally laid to rest at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Born in Roseland Kansas, Turk enlisted in the US Navy on September 24, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 19.&nbsp;

On November 25, 1940, Turk reported for duty aboard the USS California, a flagship of the Battle Force.&nbsp;

On December 7th, 1941, the USS California was attacked by Japanese forces while moored at Pearl Harbor.&nbsp;

One hundred and four sailors and Marines, including Turk, were lost, following the severe damage caused by multiple torpedoes and bombs hitting the USS California.&nbsp;

In 2018, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency began to exhume the unknown remains associated with the USS California and had them reexamined using updated forensic technology and circumstantial evidence to identify the remains of Seaman Second Class Turk.&nbsp;

"The full counting mission of the Defense P.O.W. and Accountability Agency. Is there. That's their primary goal, is to account for every American service member that is unaccounted for in every foreign war that we served in. We take this very seriously in the VFW and support that program and definitely encourage Congress to support D.P.A.A. with funding to, to bring home every one of our service members." Kansas VFW P.O.W. M.I.A. chair, David Babin says.&nbsp;

Turk was honored with a funeral service with military honors and a final resting place in the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.&nbsp;

"As the Kansas VFW P.O.W. M.I.A. chair, I strive to not only have the VFW post VFW as participate in these programs, I encourage the community to, to participate and to spread awareness to the public that we never forget a fallen comrade and that we will bring them all home, no matter how long it takes." Babin says.&nbsp;

Seaman Second Class Turk's remains were escorted by motorcycle riders from the American Legion Post 45 Junction City.

Donations have been strong for the Geary Community Match Day. Just before 11 a.m. the coordinator, Calvin Pottberg, noted that there had been donations totaling $165,000. For every dollar pledged 50 cents can be added to the total.

Geary Community Match Day sponsored by the Greater Geary Community Foundation is set for Tuesday. There will be a 50% match on gifts ranging from $25 to $1,000. $140,000 in matching funds will be available.

MARSHALL COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 364 officials are investigating a student who allegedly had a gun on campus.

On Friday, police&nbsp;responded to Marysville High School after an observant teacher overheard a student claiming to have a firearm in his vehicle, according to a media release.

  Numerous officers were dispatched and one student was taken into custody immediately. 

 No firearms were located in the vehicle.  Due to the student's age, police released no other information. 

Police said they are thankful for the teacher immediately reporting the incident and the school district contacting law enforcement immediately.

The menu will range from biscuits and gravy to scrambled eggs and hash browns. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Tickets are available through the American Legion Post 45 Lounge or from officers of the Post. The meal is open to the public. Make checks payable to Fresh Start.

4-H Members Receive Special Awards at the Kansas State Fair

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library in Junction City is celebrating Native American Heritage month with a series of events held from Saturday, October 22 to Monday, November 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;Entitled Native November:&nbsp;&nbsp;Sharing America’s First Stories, this period is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native People.&nbsp;

The series will kick off this Saturday, 10/22 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a visit from the Wichita Inter-Tribal Warrior Society.&nbsp;&nbsp;The society is made up of various Nations and describes what life was like for Native People on the Plains.&nbsp;&nbsp;Weather permitting, the event will be held outside on the library grounds and include a tipi to visit.

Next up will be a performance by Wichita War Dancer, Greg Victors, on Friday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. In addition to performing native dances, Victors will also help the audience learn more about Indigenous culture, offer the chance to ask questions, and the opportunity for audience participation.

This program series is funded in part through at $2,600 grant received from Humanities Kansas.&nbsp;

Dillards reported an unknown male suspect cut security wire and took 2 Louis Vuitton bags from the business.

RCPD investigating $8,000 jewelry theft from Manhattan home

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher This week in the grocery store I was delighted to see the first fresh cranberries of the season. I bought a bag and will make cranberry bread with it soon. It might seem odd in Kansas but, for me, those cranberries are one of the surest signs of fall and a reminder of home. Where I grew up, cranberries are a big deal. My parents live in the Wisconsin county with the highest number of acres in cranberry production in the U.S., most of their neighbors grow them, and I even took cranberry science in high school. I love sharing fun facts about cranberries like they do not grow in water. The image you may be thinking of where people are in hip waders with water past their knees is actually during cranberry harvest. Since cranberries are buoyant, the beds where they grow are flooded to make removing berries from the vines with a beater and then collection at one end of the bed easier. Cranberry growers also use water to protect their crop. Harvest is typically from the end of September through October, when the nights are getting cold enough that the berries are at risk of frost damage. &nbsp;Growers have alarm systems to alert them of dangerous temperatures. When the alarms sound, they start their irrigation systems to coat the berries in water. As the water freezes a process called heat of fusion occurs and enough heat is given off to protect the crop. The cold is a necessary part of the fruit’s development as lower temperatures contribute to deepening the berry’s red color, which can bring a premium on the crop. There is something inspirational about the fact that the closer cranberries come to being destroyed, the more they increase in value. There are actually lots of plant equivalents to the saying “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.” Drought stressed wheat will have higher protein content. Giant Sequoia seeds can only germinate after a fire. Adversity is sometimes the most effective way for us to gain the character that we need to succeed in life. One particular memory from my childhood comes to my mind when I think about failure pushing us to be our best. When I was 11, I took tractor safety to get my permit so I could drive on public roads. Since I was a relatively inexperienced driver, my dad spent time with me practicing all the components of the test. My dad tried to be patient but to the delight of my older brothers, I was a natural at all the wrong moves, and I am sure my dad was embarrassed. Within the first 30 seconds of the test, I ran over a pole on the course, which gave me enough points that one more mistake would cause me to fail the test. However, I was determined to pass the test and prove to my brothers I could do it. I took a few breaths and proceeded through the course with as much skill and focus as an 11-year-old could muster. I didn’t make another mistake for the remainder of the test and received my certificate. That same lesson has repeated itself through my life dozens of times when I was on the verge of failure. In those moments, I learned important lessons in life and how capable I really am. We all could benefit from acting more like cranberries by realizing that the closer you get to failure, the bigger the reward will be.

Carita Whaley, Milford, was driving a Ford F-350 pulling a hay trailer when the vehicle was hit from behind by a Ford Fiesta driven by Mary Farley, Wakefield. Farley and her passenger were transported by EMS for minor injuries. A wrecker service responded to the scene and towed the Ford Fiesta.

&nbsp; MANHATTAN — The 2022-2023&nbsp;<a href="https://mccain.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">McCain Performance Series</a>&nbsp;presents the hit musical "Chicago" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. After 25 years, "Chicago" is still the one musical with everything that makes Broadway shimmy-shake. A universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz, "Chicago" has one show-stopping song after another and the most astonishing dancing you will see. The musical has been honored with six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations. After 25 years, "Chicago" is still the one musical with everything that makes Broadway shimmy-shake. Members of the Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel got an update Friday on local food needs from Geary County Food Pantry Director Debbie Johns. She said that "those in need of food include seasonal employees, young military families, those struggling with addiction and sometimes school district professionals who are unemployed during the summer months."

Johns also noted&nbsp; that there's a need to get information out in the community about the availability of food at the Food Pantry for those in need. In the past, boxes of&nbsp; food items were prepared and distributed but now they're distributing by choice. Fresh Food Friday is another newer approach to providing fresh produce for families.

There will be a Medicare open enrollment event on Wednesday at the Geary County Senior Center. Area Agency on Aging SHICK counselors will be ready to help seniors and caregivers compare their Medicare insurance plan options and enroll during an open enrollment period. If you are unable to attend there are other ways to review your Medicare options with a SHICK counselor. You can meet at one of the other community event locations, in an Agency office, confer over the phone or meet via Zoom video conference.
