HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you got an extension on the deadline to file your 2021 tax return, the IRS wants to remind you, your time is almost up.

"For those folks who got a six month extension, the deadline to file normally would be October 15," said Michael Devine with the IRS. "Since that's on a weekend, it goes to the next business day, which this year is Monday, October 17. That is the day that you need to file your tax return and avoid any chance of being tagged with a failure to file penalty."

The failure to file penalty&nbsp;is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late.

"It needs to be in the system by midnight on Monday, so that you don't have to worry about any penalties," Devine said. "You can do it yourself. There's a lot of ways to do that. <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free">IRS Free File</a>&nbsp;is still available. Just go to IRS.gov. Right at the top, the first box you see is File Your Taxes for Free. If you made less than $73,000, you can pick a company that you want to do your taxes, put all the information in, and it will go."&nbsp;

For taxpayers whose AGI is greater than $73,000, there’s the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/free-file-fillable-forms" target="_blank">Free File Fillable Forms</a>&nbsp;option. It provides electronic federal tax forms that can be filled out and filed online for free.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"If you owed money, that was due back in April," Devine said. "Penalties have been building up on that amount of money. The worst thing you can do is nothing. File your tax return. If you need help, contact the IRS."

Most questions can be answered at <a href="http://www.irs.gov">IRS.gov</a>, or you can call weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 1 (800) 829-1040.

Fort Riley's 26th annual Ghost Tours are Saturday from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. The tours will begin at the Artillery Parade Field.&nbsp;

Maggie Moore, with the Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley, said the tour of the historic Main Post will include stories of past and present residents. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The tours will run about 45 minutes.&nbsp;

The tours will focus on coming out of the pandemic and how Fort Riley was affected by earlier pandemics. The ghost tours are going to take a trip back in time to present a ghostly visual experience. There'll be stories told through the lense of many different perspectives," said Moore.

You can hear ghost tales about the Buckskin Ghost, the Lady in Black and the infamous Triangle House.

Geary Community Healthcare Foundation Executive Director Tracy Geisler has reported that the Fall Classic Golf Tournament at Rolling Meadows Golf Course raised more than $50,000. On one hole on the course if participants gave $100 for their team they received a hole in one on their scorecard. "We had up to a $3,000 match this year from Central National Bank. On that hole alone we made $7,500 so that was really exciting."

The funds raised support the Foundation's mission to support the healthcare needs in Geary County.&nbsp;

Stormont Vail Health has announced that Rep. Jake LaTurner visited with Stormont Vail leadership Wednesday at Geary Community Hospital to learn about future plans of the Junction City hospital. The Congressman met with Dr. Rob Kenagy, Tracy O’Rourke and Deb Yocum of Stormont Vail and Margaret Grismer, Geary Community Hospital. A tour of the hospital followed with Alex Tyson and Keith Ascher, Geary County Commissioners, and Tami Robison, the county finance manager.

Stormont Vail is managing the hospital until the end of the year, when it will fully takeover operations and integrate the hospital and rural health clinic into the Stormont Vail system. Stormont Vail has been working in partnership with Geary County, the hospital’s board of trustees and the county Public Building Commission to transition and stabilize the Junction City healthcare organization to ensure healthcare for the community in the future.

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities including the FBI conducted an intensive investigation Wednesday a man accused in&nbsp; the robbery at Bank of the Flint Hills, 101 E MacKenzie Street in White City, according to the Morris County Sheriff.

Just after 10p.m. Wednesday, police captured 35-year-old Christopher J. Callaham of Junction City at a motel in Junction City.&nbsp;

Just after 10a.m. Wednesday, a man with a handgun and wearing a mask entered the Bank of the Flint Hills and demanded money from a clerk, according to the Morris County Sheriff's office.

The man was described as a white male with dark colored hair. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and brown boots. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran into a residential neighborhood south of the bank.

Officers from Council Grove and deputies from the Morris County Sheriff's office began searching for the suspect. School in White City were placed on lockdown.&nbsp; There were no injuries reported at the bank.

Callaham is being held in Geary County on a felony arrest warrant for aggravated robbery and&nbsp; two additional requested drug charges, according to online booking records.

Schmidt Foundation gift will aid Ian recovery efforts

MANHATTAN — Following a more than two-year pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/landon" target="_blank">Landon Lecture Series</a>&nbsp;returns with David M. Beasley, executive director of the United Nations' World Food Programme.

Beasley's lecture, "Kansas' Legacy in Global Food Security," begins at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The lecture is free and members of the university community and public are invited to attend. Beasley is a champion of the fight against hunger. As the executive director of the World Food Programme, Beasley has mobilized resources to respond to an increasing need for food. In 2021, the agency helped feed more than 128 million people — a record number. Beyond emergency food assistance, Beasley and the World Food Programme also highlight how long-term development can help bring peace and stability to troubled regions. In 2020, under Beasley's leadership, the World Food Programme was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

Landon Lecture Series returns to Kansas State University Nov. 3

Two longtime music educators at Junction City High school, the late Charles Volland and Vaudene Field, are remembered by many people. Now they have been honored with the dedication of a Steinway Boston grand piano for use by performing arts students.

There was a dedication reception at JCHS on Wednesday where a plaque bearing the name of donors for the project was unveiled.

Volland and Field both were choral directors and taught in the music program for many years at JCHS.&nbsp;

Terrah Stroda, Vaudene's daughter, said they went on in different capacities with the school district as well until their respective retirements.

Stroda noted that the piano was a combined project. "We wanted to welcome the new high school, we wanted to honor our parents, and we wanted to celebrate music as a key integral part of Junction City High School."

Kathy Volland, Charles wife, said the piano was the culmination of hard work from different groups of people. "Charles started out here as a music teacher, a vocal music teacher and spent about 20 years of his life here ( JCHS ). He really enjoyed his time with the high school students."

Charles loved music, remembered his daughter, Jill Nelson. "That's where I get my passion and my love of music from, is my dad." Charles remained active in music after he became the communications coordinator for USD 475. He was involved with the Little Theater where he served as music director for shows and as a choir director.&nbsp;

It will occur in the Curtis Creek and Milford State Park areas near Milford Lake. The Hunt will be limited to five youth hunters and five mobility-impaired people with permanent disabilities.

On Oct. 6,&nbsp; five JCHS Transition Students performed community service by picking up food commodities from the Junction City Food Pantry and delivered several food orders to older adults who reside at the Bicentennial Manor. The USD 475 Transition Program is a post-secondary training that promotes job skills, life skills, and social skills for young adults.&nbsp;A transition plan helps students prepare for life after high school.

Matters relating to Geary Community Hospital including consideration of prepaid rent to the Public Building Commission and an executive session for legal matters are on the agenda for a special Geary County Commission / Public Building Commission meeting on Thursday. It begins at noon at the County Office Building.

There will also be discussion with County Clerk Rebecca Nordyke at 1 p.m. about support for a KDOT grant for the Geary County Senior Center.

There will be a United Way sponsored raffle at the Junction City - Topeka High football game Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium. There will be a $1 charge per ticket or 6 for $5. Raffle items will include a Gift Card Tree, official Blue Jay gear, sideline coaching opportunity and separately, there will be a 50/50 prize.

K-State horticulture expert shares tips for harvesting and curing

MANHATTAN, Kan. —&nbsp;Many homeowners who have a black walnut tree in their yard look forward to the nuts it drops in the fall. Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said knowing what to look for is key to successfully harvesting and curing black walnuts.&nbsp;

“Black walnuts are ready to be harvested when the hull can be dented with your thumb,” Upham said. “You can also wait until the nuts start falling from the tree.”&nbsp;

Soon after harvesting, the hull – the hard outer coating of the nut – needs to be removed. If not removed in a timely manner, the stain from the hull can leech inside and discolor the meat. This staining will also result in an undesirable off-flavor.&nbsp;

Before hulling the nuts, ensure you wear gloves, Upham said. Black walnuts contain a stubborn dye that will stain concrete, hands, clothing, or anything it touches. Once it stains, the dye is almost impossible to remove.&nbsp;

With gloves on, there are several methods you can employ to hull the nuts. The nuts can be run through a corn sheller or pounded through holes in a board.&nbsp;

“The hole must be big enough for the nut, but smaller than the hull,” Upham said.&nbsp;

He recommends a simpler method: running over the nuts with a lawn tractor.&nbsp;

“This will break the hull but not crack the nut,” he said.&nbsp;

Hulled nuts can then be spread on the lawn or wire mesh and sprayed with water, or the nuts can be placed in a tub of water.&nbsp;

“If you place them in a tub, the good nuts should sink,” Upham said. “Those that float are probably not well-filled with kernels.”&nbsp;

Nuts can then be dried by spreading them in no more than three layers deep in a cool, dry place. A garage or tool shed will work. After about two weeks, the nuts should be dried and ready to enjoy by themselves or in your favorite fall dish.&nbsp;

Harvesting newly fallen black walnuts 

Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley, or HASFR (hass-fer), will host the 26th annual Fort Riley Ghost Tours this Saturday, Oct. 15, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Walking tours will start every 10 minutes, beginning at 4:30, with the last tour starting out at 8:30. Tickets are $8 per person and may be purchased in advance.

Annual ghost tours to haunt Fort Riley October 15

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a car theft in Riley County and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 9p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 400 block of Clydesdale Drive in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 24-year-old woman and Cornerstone of Care reported a 14-year-old male suspect stole a white 2020 Hyundai Elantra. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $20,000. The car was later recovered in Junction City and the suspect was taken into custody by the Junction City Police Department.

Optimists learn about USD 475 security

VA Eastern Kansas will host an American Braille Flag Dedication on Friday where a donated tactile braille flag honoring blind veterans will be dedicated. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Lt. Gen. Richard J. Seitz Community Based Outpatient Clinic across from the main entrance to the CBOC.

Visually impaired Veterans from the Visual Impairment Service Team Program will be in attendance along with the Heartland Regional Group of the Blinded Veterans Association.

The American Braille Flag Project's goal is to place the American braille flag in all facilities visited by blind Veterans and blind Americans to that they may see the American braille flag by the touch of their fingers.

Geary County Historical Society is hosting their monthly STEAM Saturday program this week with a special appearance by Milford Nature Center. 

This month’s program will focus on local Geary County flora and fauna with activities like leaf rubbing art projects, leaf symmetry drawings and a visit with some of Milford Nature Center’s “creepy crawlers.” This come-and-go style program will be held at the museum at 530 N. Adams, Saturday between 1:00-3:30 and is intended for all ages.&nbsp;
