Geary County Sheriff's Deputies worked a non-injury accident at East Lyons Creek Road and Otter Creek Road for a vehicle accident. Irwin Barragan, Junction City, was turning from Otter Creek Road onto westbound East Lyons Creek Road when the vehicle slid off the roadway and into a ditch. It was then hit by a Toyota Highlander driven by Billy Knox, Junction City, who was traveling in the same direction. The Highlander hit the Envoy as it also slid in the same intersection. There were not any injuries.

Deputies responded to U.S. 77 and Skiddy West Road for a vehicle accident. Timothy Schrader, White City, was attempting to stop at a stop sign on Skiddy West Road at U.S. 77 when he slid on an icy road in his Kia Sportage and struck Kenneth Knight, Woodbine, who was southbound on U.S. 77 in a Kia Sorrento. No one was injured.

Damage estimate from an early morning fire at Stickels Cleaners has been put at $10,000. No one was injured.

At 4:19 a.m. the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to Stickels Cleaners, 714 North 12th Street for a report of a structure fire. Crews found a small fire in a shed behind the business with an occupant working to extinguish the fire. It was contained within 10 minutes of arrival.

The building is an approximate 400 square foot accessory structure for the main building used for dry cleaning operations. The loss was estimated at $10,000 for the building and equipment. The fire cause was listed as accidental due to thawing operations that were being conducted.&nbsp;

GEARY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 7p.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Toyota Tacoma driven by&nbsp; Zachary P. Bealer,&nbsp; 33, Kansas City, Mo., was westbound on Interstate 70 at McDowell Creek Road

The driver lost control of the pickup. It spun across the median. An eastbound 2020 Chevy Silverado driven by Rhoda Yoder, 32, Trinidad, Colorado, rear-ended the Toyota.

An eastbound 2016 Dodge Ram driven by Kinsey Davidson, 32, Cleveland, Tennessee, struck the Chevy and then the Toyota.

After impact the Toyota came to rest approximately 80 feet down the embankment.

&nbsp;Bealer was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Johnson's Funeral Chapel.&nbsp; There were no other injuries. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver dies after 3-vehicle I-70 crash

GEARY COUNTY - Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Milford Lake on December 22, 2022 at 9:42 a.m. on the report of an individual stranded on the water in a disabled jon boat.

Geary County Dispatch was contacted by Justin Howe of Fort Riley when the motor on the jon boat died while he was attempting to retrieve geese decoys off the lake.

After the motor died, the boat drifted away from where Howe had been hunting, and got stuck in ice, eventually becoming frozen in place.

When Howe contacted dispatch he advised them he had been in the boat, on the lake for approximately 40 minutes.

From the shore, Deputies located Howe in the jon boat around 10:20 am, the Geary County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit used the City of Milford boat ramp to access Milford Lake, after breaking ice at the ramp, and were able to launch into the lake at 11:09 a.m.

Junction City Fire/EMS also responded to the City of Milford boat ramp, ready to assist if medical attention was needed.

Dense fog made it difficult for the Marine unit to locate Howe and his jon boat.

The Marine Unit's engine experienced mechanical issues while searching for Howe and the engine went into limp mode.

Geary County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit was able to locate Hoe and his jon boat about 100 yards from them before they made the decision to figure out an alternative plan.

The Marine Unit had to break ice around Howe's jon boat to get close enough for him to board the Marine unit boat.

Howe and the Marine Unit members arrived at the City of Milford boat ramp at 11:55 a.m. where they were screened by the Junction City Fire Department EMT's before being released.

The Geary County Sheriff’s Office would like to say thank you and show our gratitude to the Junction City Fire Department for their assistance.

Jerry Moran, R-Kan., a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, announced in a news release Thursday a more than $15 million federal investment for the construction of new barracks at Fort Riley. This federal investment was included in the FY2023 Appropriations Package.

“Already home to nearly 15,000 active duty servicemembers and the headquarters for the 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley will soon have the opportunity to expand its capabilities,” Moran said. “By building new barracks, the base will have greater capacity for additional soldiers to be housed at Fort Riley and will be in a better position to compete for future opportunities. I appreciated the opportunity to welcome Chief of Staff of the Army General James McConville to Fort Riley this summer to see firsthand Fort Riley’s capabilities.

“Throughout my time in Congress, and especially since the 1st Infantry Division’s return to Fort Riley in 2005, I am proud to have worked closely with the Department of Defense to invest in resources to grow and support Fort Riley’s critical infrastructure, including new middle and elementary schools and the state-of-the-art Irwin Army Hospital,” Moran said. “With the addition of these new barracks, Fort Riley will continue to be one of the best places for our service members to live, work and raise a family.”

Fort Riley to remain on minimal manning with limited services Friday

TOPEKA — Democrat Tom Hawk of 
Manhattan said Thursday he would retire Jan. 10 midway through his 
four-year term in the Kansas Senate.

Hawk, 76, is a retired school superintendent and teacher who had a 
33-year career in public education. He served three terms in the Kansas 
House before he was defeated for re-election in 2010. In 2012, he won the first 
of three elections for Kansas Senate.

He represents the 22nd District in the Senate that includes Riley, Geary and Clay counties.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve our state
 and represent my pocket of Kansas in the Legislature,” Hawk said. “I am
 grateful to my neighbors for placing their trust in me to be their 
voice in Topeka over these past 10 plus years.”

The 2023 Legislature convenes Jan. 9. Hawk’s exit from the Senate 
would officially transpire the next day. He serves on the Senate’s 
budget, transportation and utilities committees.

Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes, of Lenexa, said residents of 
Hawk’s district were fortunate to be represented by Hawk. She said his 
work to secure K-12 and university funding and to advance bipartisan 
legislation, including the state highway plan, would benefit the state 
for generations.

“His intellect, attention to detail and inimitable wit made our team 
stronger,” Sykes said. “Our caucus will feel a little emptier and a lot 
less funny without Tom Hawk in the room every day. ”

His seat in the Kansas Senate will be filled through a selection 
process organized by the Kansas Democratic Party. Republicans in the 
Kansas Senate hold a 29-11 advantage over the minority party. The full 
Senate doesn’t face reelection until 2024.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Six Farm Bureau members of Kansas have been selected for the second cohort of the organization’s Casten Fellows program to enhance leadership and expand perspectives of participants. “This program was developed to honor Kansas Farm Bureau staffer Jill Casten-Downing and continue her love for agriculture, leadership development and international travel,” says Edie Doane, Kansas Farm Bureau director of training and development. “The participants selected have demonstrated a commitment to intentional life-long growth and active engagement in Kansas Farm Bureau.” Fellows have significant prior leadership experience and are selected through an extensive application and interview process. These members will commit to more than 100 hours of individual and group work for the program, in addition to an international study experience in Uganda and Tanzania. Six selected for second cohort of KFB's Casten Fellows program

ABILENE - At 19 feet 10 ½ inches wide and 13 feet 11 ¼ inches tall (not including the frame),&nbsp; the World’s Largest Belt Buckle is now at home in Abilene, according to a media release from the convention and visitor's bureau. Unveiled Wednesday at noon at Eisenhower Park, the project serves as a billboard celebrating Abilene.

Designed by local artist, Jason Lahr, Fluter’s Creek Metal Works, the buckle features Dwight D. Eisenhower, Wild Bill Hickok, Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad, Historic Seelye Mansion, C.W. Parker carousel horse, C.L. Brown telephone, a racing Greyhound and Chisholm Trail longhorn inlaid with blue quartz.

The buckle is a project of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau which hopes the new roadside attraction will entice travelers to stop and visit the Best Historic Small Town.

“Whether you enjoy Cowboy history, art, fun photo opportunities or the world’s largest things, make sure to add the World’s Largest Belt Buckle to your Kansas I-70 road trip,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director.

The project is funded by a Kansas Tourism Attraction Development Grant and from donations from 100 businesses and individuals. The buckle garnered nationwide attention when Jefferson White, a.k.a. “Jimmy” from the hit tv show Yellowstone shared about the project.

Brown telephone, a racing Greyhound and Chisholm Trail longhorn inlaid with blue quartz.The buckle is a project of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau which hopes the new roadside attraction will entice travelers to stop and visit the Best Historic Small Town.“Whether you enjoy Cowboy history, art, fun photo opportunities or the world’s largest things, make sure to add the World’s Largest Belt Buckle to your Kansas I-70 road trip,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director.The project is funded by a Kansas Tourism Attraction Development Grant and from donations from 100 businesses and individuals. On Wednesday, Spring Valley Elementary students made 60 Christmas gift bags for residents at Valley View Senior Life. In addition, I.C.A.R.E. donated 25 pair of Bombas Socks.

There will be no trash/garbage pick-up by the City of Junction City on Monday, December 26th due to the Christmas Holiday.

However, Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said trash/garbage pick-up will be picked up the next workday as follows:

GEARY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and asking the public for help to ID suspects.

Just after 5a.m. December 13, two unknown subjects broke into and stole a large amount of money from Money Zone, 314 East Chestnut, in Junction City, according to a media release from police.

Police ask that anyone with information about this incident and or the identity of the two individuals pictured please get in touch with the Junction City Police Department and or Geary County Crime Stoppers.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, all of the students from Sheridan Elementary who attended school that day (approximately 270 K-5th grade), along with the Principal, teachers, and staff workers, traveled to Valley View Senior Life. Students along with the old and young adults and Valley View Staff, sang several Christmas Carols together. Voices of the students were heard throughout the building. 

Students also made Christmas Cards to be distributed to residents. Intergenerational interaction was coordinated by Stephanie Kabariel, Principal, Valley View staff, and I.C.A.R.E

2022 has been a showcase of the evolving world of fraud for regulators at the Kansas Insurance Department. Throughout the year, our Securities division has been busy investigating new types of scams on various digital platforms. This holiday season, as Christmas movies fill the airwaves, viewers can often draw parallels between the actions of today’s fraudsters and the villains of many cherished Christmas stories. In observing the villainy of Christmas antiheroes, helpful fraud prevention lessons can be derived.

Gift Card Scams: Like Scut Farkus’s persistent bullying of poor Ralphie in A Christmas Story, intimidation is a predominant tactic used during most gift card scams. Gift card scammers typically try to frighten victims with a sense of urgency. Most reputable entities will not use high-pressure tactics when requesting payment and none of them will ever request payment via gift cards.

Caller ID Spoofing: Comparable to the Wet Bandits’ impersonation of law enforcement in Home Alone, spoofing is a deceitful ploy often used by phone scammers. Spoofers use technology to falsify the information that appears on caller ID. This information usually appears as a government agency or reputable company. Avoid spoofing by not answering the phone for unknown numbers.

Phishing: Rivaling the thievery of the Grinch, cyber criminals who go phishing look to score big by stealing your personal information. Cyber phishing typically involves using hyperlinks to direct victims to sites designed to steal their private information. It’s good practice to always hover over hyperlinks to verify the authenticity of the link. Also, look for the “https:” when examining URLs. The “s” stands for “secure” and signifies that encryption is enabled to protect personal information.

“It’s our goal to stop fraud before it happens,” said Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “Which is why it is so important that Kansans be on the lookout for tactics used most often by fraudsters.”
