You may remember hearing about 
the Four County Fire back on Dec. 15, 2021. The fire devastated many
 acres in the counties of Ellis, Russell, Osborne and Rooks.

I remember the day vividly, despite being almost 200 
miles from those four counties. It was the strangest day I can recall in
 my entire life living in Kansas. In Manhattan, the tornado 
sirens blew in the middle of the afternoon as high winds tore roofs off 
buildings. The power went off and I could smell something burning. I 
thought at first it could be the beginning of an electrical fire. 
However, as I stepped outside, ashes were falling from the sky, and the 
air smelled of smoke.

Unfortunately, these powerful winds were occurring across the 
entirety of Kansas that day. Some wind gusts were measured at speeds of 
107 mph! This was even more frightening for western Kansas, especially 
around the Hays area, because the Kansas State Research Extension Center
 had not recorded any rainfall since Nov. 3. The area was vulnerable
 to anything that might spark a fire. Many locals concluded that the 
fire started from a spark of a broken power line in Ellis County. As it 
spread, the blaze left many people in the area wetting down their yards 
hoping to slow the fire before it took everything they had. The fire 
devastated the landscape, leaving many farmers, ranchers and other 
people fighting to save not only their lives but their livelihoods. The 
people in this area will never fully recover, but many believe it will 
take two to three years for the area to return to some sense of normal. 
It is important to remember that the Four County area still needs help! 
We must not forget how devastating this day was and that the recovery 
efforts have not ended.

Stephanie Dickerson, a multi-generational ranch owner in Paradise commented that, "Right now, the area is still in need of new 
fencing supplies and labor to recover the old fences and the debris from
 the fire."

The Four County Fire showed the Kansas Legislature a change was
 necessary for the future. In preparation for future wildfires, a bill 
passed allowing individuals to purchase fencing supplies without any 
sales tax at all. Another crucial thing to remember is that wildfires 
are hard to predict and can happen in any rural community. Insurance 
Commissioner Vicki Schmidt would like to remind people it is important 
to check your insurance plans to ensure you are covered for disasters 
like this wildfire.

On Dec. 15, rancher Chris Pelton had gotten a call that the fire 
was 7 miles southwest of Paradise and headed toward his land very 
quickly. He attempted to hold off the fires until his shop was engulfed 
in flames. Luckily, he made a quick escape but lost nearly all his 
buildings and many of his family possessions. He managed to save his 
dog, Archie, from his burning shed before he left for his own safety. 
Pelton remarked, "It was amazing to watch how people came to help with 
the recovery."

The fire did far more damage to soil than an average wildfire because
 it burned off the crop residue from many fields. This allowed powerful 
winds to blow the extremely dry topsoil away. Additionally, it took away
 people's lifelong family homes, fences, livestock and businesses. Many 
families had started these businesses from the ground up or maintained 
them for many generations.

This tragedy is significant to many people in these communities. It 
is evident they needed help and assistance in some way after this 
unpredictable and catastrophic event. An amazing saving grace effort 
came from people in the surrounding communities donating resources and 
traveling to the four counties to help with the wildfire recovery 
effort. The Kansas Livestock Foundation even managed to distribute two 
million dollars of funds to 91 Kansas applicants that were affected by 
the wildfire. The funds were donated by 2,100 generous contributors from
 41 states. Applicants lost more than 2,100 head of livestock and about 
750 miles of fencing.

Let us not forget the wildfires on Dec. 15, 2021, which show us 
that no matter how much certainty we have in our future, it can all be 
taken away by events outside of our control. However, what took place 
after the storms and wildfires are what gives me hope for our future as a
 country. There are still so many caring people who will be kind and 
helpful to people who are fighting off the worst moments of their lives.
 Please, be thankful for everything you have. If this story affects you 
in any way, please never be afraid to give to somebody who truly needs 
help in the future. It could make all the difference in the world.

At Tuesday evening's USD 475 Board of Education meeting, the Board gave the opportunity for an architectural conceptual design for an Early Childhood Center to be presented.

&nbsp;Mr. David Wild requested formal approval from the Board of Education to give <a href="https://sjcf.com/">Schafer Johnson Cox and Frey Architecture</a> the authority to move forward with a conceptual design of an Early Childhood Center.

The proposed concept would include a 32-classroom facility with space for administration within the building.

Mr. Wild recommended the architecture firm would bring back 2 to 3 concepts for the facility, so the district has designs in-hand when it is time to apply for the $15 million Defense Communities Investment Program grant in 2023.

The district would then be expected to match the $15 million, for a total of $30 million to be spent on the facility, with construction of the facility projected to start in 2024.

USD 475 BoE approves request for conceptual design of $30M Early Childhood Center

At Tuesday night's City Commission meeting, Junction City Commissioners discussed with city officials&nbsp;the request for demolition of the former Knights Inn located at 1024 South Washington Street.

City officials say the <a href="https://jcpost.com/posts/10b8bd4d-9adb-40bc-a416-351b10fb47d5">structure was determined to be an unsafe</a> due to multiple cracks in the brick walls, due to settling, causing bricks to fall out.

City Manager Allen Dinkel says the property owner has received multiple notices about the condition of the building, and if the commission approves the request for demolition, the cost for demolition will be billed to the property owner and if unpaid will be assessed to the taxes. 

The property owner spoke up during Dinkel’s comments notifying commissioners that he has a contract for demolition and is working out the details before proceeding. 

City Commissioners agreed to postpone the request for demolition until the next city commission meeting on September 20th, to allow the property owner and contractor time to present a plan for demolition.

RILEY COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just before 6a.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

A 2019 Ford Transit 150 van driven by Jada Conley, 47, of Centralia, rear-ended a 2020 Ram 1500 driven by Benjamin Risher, 38, Manhattan,&nbsp;near the intersection of E. Riley Avenue and Fort Riley Boulevard outside Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Risher and two passengers from the van to Via Christi for evaluation of possible minor injuries. Conley was not transported. The RCPD released no additional details.

3 hospitalized after Riley County rear-end crash

MANHATTAN - The <a href="https://www.gotrflinthills.org/">Girls on the Run of the Flint Hills</a> is asking for donations of brand new sports bras, or monetary donations to purchase sport bras in order to provide participants with much needed support while running.

In the end of season survey given to participants in the Spring 2022 Girls on the Run program, participants were asked what they would buy with $100 to help their teammates be successful.

Donations of brand new sports bras needed to support runners this season

Just before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6th, agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and officers with the Wamego Police Department arrested 20-year-old, McKaine T. Farr, of Wamego.

Farr was arrested for the alleged distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm on death in connection with the September 5th, 2021 death of 21-year-old Jayson Ebert of Wamego.&nbsp;

The KBI was called to assist the Wamego Police Department on September 9, 2021, after Ebert was discovered deceased at 1312 16th Street in Wamego.

Ebert died from an apparent fentanyl overdose, and according to investigators, Farr knowingly distributed the counterfeit oxycodone tablets lace with fentanyl which caused Ebert's death.

Farr was arrested at 15227 6th Street Road in Wamego and was booked into the Pottawatomie County Jail.&nbsp;

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. 

It is expected that the Pottawatomie County Attorney’s Office will prosecute the case. 

The investigation is ongoing and no additional details will be released at this time.

Saturday is Book Donation Day at the library

RILEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 1a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man reported&nbsp; a 21-year-old male suspect was at his apartment at The Pointe, 1401 College Hill Avenue, when he stole cash from him leading to a fight between the two. 

Officers were called to the scene with the report of a disturbance and witnessed Courtney Harris, 21, of Junction City running away. 

Harris jumped over a second-story railing and ran from officers but was detained shortly after in the immediate area. 

EMS transported Harris to Via Christi for examination of his injuries from the fall and arrested him in connection to the incident for aggravated robbery.&nbsp; After being medically cleared, Harris remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.

This program has been announced by Junction City Main Street. It is partially funded by a grant from the Geary County CVB and support from the National Endowment for the Arts.&nbsp; Kansas Department of Commerce Creative Arts Industries Commission and R2B4 Bramlage Foundation are also backing the program.

People of all ages and experience levels may participate. The competition begins at 7:30 p.m. on the 23rd at the Main Street Office, 131 W. 7th St. Teams must have at least two paid registrants. Teams can have up to six registered members with the accepted use of up to five unregistered actors.

Junction City Commissioners will conduct a public hearing and consider final adoption of the 2023 City budget Tuesday evening. Their meeting begins at 7 p.m. at 701 North Jefferson.

The City is not proposing an increase in the property tax levy, leaving it at 48.328 mills.

Geary County Commissioners will hear a number of reports when they meet from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the County Office Building. Reports from the rural fire chief / emergency management director, HR Director, public works administrator, finance officer and county clerk are on the agenda. The commission is also scheduled to meet in executive session with attorney Peter Rombold for legal matters regarding Geary Community Hospital.

USD 475 school board members will be in session at 6 p.m. at the Devin Center. They will consider purchase of 500 additional laptop computers to cover current student need and provide stock for the next two years. The Board will also be asked to consider replacement of existing business computer labs at Junction City High School.&nbsp;

Staff recommends that the BOE approve the recommendation from the administration to purchase the 500 student laptops and 90 student desktops from Dell for $302,949.60.

There will be a busy public meeting slate in Junction City Tuesday

Junction City Commissioners will consider a request to solicit bids for demolition of the former Knights Inn, 1024 South Washington, when they meet Tuesday evening. The meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. at 701 North Jefferson.

According to an agenda memorandum City staff believe the building is a dangerous and unsafe structure.

If the process continues it may cost up to $250,000 to demolish and clean up the site. The project would be funded through demolition removal in the general fund. $100,000 was budgeted for 2022. Costs will be billed to the property owner of record and will reimburse any charges to this account.

While the building could come down this year it may be a few years before the site is freed for other uses.

Former Knights Inn property will be on the Junction City Commission agenda

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher Tuesday I was hauling hay; it was my fifth or sixth load of the day, and I had been hauling hay for the better part of a week. That was when I saw the Subaru had decided to pass me at that very point. Thankfully, nothing more happened than the driver squealing their brakes and shaking their fist at me, but it could have been much worse. Over the past couple of months, I have had a couple of friends who have had worse experiences sharing the highways with other motorists. Thankfully, none of them were seriously hurt, but the damage to farm equipment was not something they had planned to deal with, I am sure. Let me be the first to say I was not without fault. Upon inspection, I learned my left-turn signal was not working. However, if I remember my driver’s ed classes right, it is not permissible to pass on a double yellow line or at an intersection. Along with that, following so close to a trailer that the driver in front of you cannot see you is not good either. My point is all drivers need to share the road, and those roads are starting to get even more crowded with slow moving ag equipment as harvest starts. As ag producers we need to make sure our equipment has working lights and turn signals. We need to be aware of who is around us on the roads and have a plan of action that assumes other drivers will not do the right thing. If at all possible, move equipment at times when the road is less crowded. If you are driving during harvest, please, give the equipment plenty of room. Stay far enough back to see the rearview mirrors of the vehicle ahead of you because that will mean they can also see you. Farm equipment moves slowly so take that into account as you approach. You will close the gap much faster than you may realize. Please, never pass near an intersection, many times our turn signals don’t work. Yes, farm equipment will slow your drive down, again, please take a deep breath. Don’t be in such a rush that you pass in a bad place or at the wrong time. That farmer is growing the food you are rushing home to put on your table. I got lucky, and I am using that fortunate moment as a reminder to be more vigilant when I am on the road. It only takes a second, a blink for things to go bad. Take the time to slow down, make the right decisions and be courteous. We are all in this together, we have to share the same road, let’s all be safe and make sure we make it home.

RILEY COUNTY—A Manhattan man died in an accident just after 7p.m. Sunday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Ford F250 driven by Sean M. Warner, 36, Manhattan, was eastbound in the 1200 Block of Deep Creek Road four miles Southeast of Manhattan.

The driver failed to negotiate the curve. The pickup left the roadway to the right and the driver overcorrected back onto the roadway. The pickup then entered the south ditch, struck a power pole and overturned.

Warner was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp; Irving Fairview Funeral Home. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Manhattan man dies after pickup strikes power pole, overturns

Applications will be accepted for Junction City Main Street grant funds for downtown building facade improvements. This program is designed to assist business and property owners with improvements to their existing commercial buildings in the downtown district.&nbsp;

Main Street is partnering with the City, R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation and Geary County to implement the program to assist with facade and exterior improvements that will impact perception and contribute to the overall experience for residents and tourists to the downtown area.

The program will provide a rebate of up to 50% on eligible project costs up to a maximum grant of $1,000 to each project.

Eligible projects include and are not limited to concrete work design and permit fees associated with facade improvements, door replacement, exterior cleaning, lighting and painting, signs, window replacement or repair to enhance appearance and awning repair, replacement and installation.

To receive a grant property owners or business operators must be current on property taxes. Projects must be completed no later than March 31, 2023.

Those interested in applying for a grant may request application guidelines and the grant application form from the Main Street office at 131 W. 7th St, Junction City, through email at junctioncitymainstreet@gmail.com or download from the Main Street website: junctioncitymainstreet.org

The application deadline is Sept. 16 and grants that are approved will be awarded on or before Sept. 20.

There has been discussion and study on a possible early childhood center project for USD 475. Board of Education members will address the issue Tuesday night during their meeting, said Reginald Eggleston Superintendent of Schools. "We're going to talk about firming up some of our ideas and thoughts about it. We know that we want to apply for a grant, and so we have a timeline." Eggleston noted that in November the Board will have to make a decision so that all of the components for the grant application are covered and the District will be ready to submit it.

Eggleston believes everyone understands the facility is needed and the data verifies that is the case. "All of the basics are done so we just now need to locate the property where we want to place this phenomenal facility."

District staff will seek approval to initiate an ECC conceptual design study for a facility that would include 32 classrooms plus other administrative, special education and meeting spaces. The staff's intent is to seek a $15 million Defense Communities investment Program grant in calendar year 2023. If received USD 475 would contribute $15 million to the grant for a total project of $30 million. If the grant application is successful construction on the facility could occur in fiscal-year 2024.

Chapman has been holding a Labor Day celebration since 1909. This year's two-day event begins with the Lions Club Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Indian Hills Golf Course . There will be shotgun starts at 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. in the 4-person scramble.

Other activities on Sunday range from a chili cook-off and pie contest from noon until 2 to a beer garden from 6-10 p.m. and a street dance from 7-10 p.m. Star-Gazing is scheduled from 8 -10 Sunday evening where you can see the stars and planets using the Chapman Library's telescope.

On Monday the annual Lions Club Labor Day parade will begin at 2 p.m. Other activities will include the Class of '77 car show at Chapman High School and a silent auction inside the Chapman Nazarene Church from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Touch a Truck will be held at the District Gym from 8 until noon, arts/crafts food vendor down from 8 to 3, Antique tractor show south of&nbsp; the high school from 9 to noon, quilt show at the Methodist Church fellowship hall 9-4, axe-throwing in Sheeran Park 10 to 1:30, self-guided barn quilt tour, kids pedal pull at Sheeran Park 10:30, burgers and beer at the American Legion&nbsp; from 11 to 1 and a beer garden noon until 3 p.m.

Transient guest tax is paid by users of lodging facilities. "That is the total six percent. One percent goes back to the sports complex fund, and then the five percent comes to the CVB for operation and also marketing, " said Price.

TGT dollars are collected by the motels and hotels, goes to the Kansas Department of Revenue and is then redistributed back to the counties.

Police said they will host their first annual Shop With a Cop charity golf tournament at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at Rolling Meadows Golf Course. The tournament will be a how low can you go format, meaning every 4-man team hits from the closest tee box, and each green.&nbsp;

Entry for the tournament will be $50 per golfer. Buy-in includes green fees, cart rental, range token and lunch. Teams can sign up at the Junction City Police Department where forms are available. Hays rallies from a 14-point deficit to defeat Junction City

FORT RILEY, Kan. – The Department of the Army announced today the upcoming fall rotational deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, to Europe.

The 2nd ABCT, stationed at Fort Riley will replace the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, as part of a regular rotation of forces to support the United States’ commitment to NATO allies and partners.

 “I’m incredibly proud of the Dagger Brigade, and our Soldiers are excited to train and build interoperability with our NATO allies and partners,” said Col. Bryan M.
