For a second consecutive year the Geary County Historical Society is conducting the Festival of Trees as a fundraiser. There is a silent auction filled with Christmas decor created by local artisans and businesses.&nbsp;

The silent auction began Tuesday at the Historical Museum and continues each day through Saturday when you can view and bid on items at the museum from 1-4 p.m.&nbsp; 

Sunday is the final day of bidding with a Christmas mixer at the museum. You can meet the designers while you make your final bids. The bidding will close at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Just before 11a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for aggravated arson at Manhattan High School in the 2100 block of Poyntz Avenue.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a bathroom soap dispenser was lit on fire. A teacher with a fire extinguisher&nbsp; quickly put the fire out.&nbsp; The incident remains under investigation.&nbsp;

KSU Research and Extension has announced that Kyler Langvardt will begin serving as the Geary County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent, effective Nov 28. Geary County’s office is in Junction City, Kansas. &nbsp;

Langvardt earned both his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and his master’s degree in Agricultural Education and Communications from Kansas State University.&nbsp; He has most recently been employed as a program manager for U.S. CattleTrace in Wamego, KS. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Agriculture and Natural Resources agents develop and deliver educational programming related, but not limited, to agronomic and livestock production; agricultural economics; management and public policy; horticultural production and management; natural resources conservation; and environmental stewardship.&nbsp;

Langvardt will succeed Chuck Otte, who retired in September.

New Geary County Agricultural Agent is named

Karen Hildebrand Erichsen has been named the Geary County Extension Appreciation Award winner.&nbsp;

Erichsen has been involved in Extension programming throughout her life. As far as Extension activities and events go, she has been involved since childhood, to Extension Homemakers Unit meetings, to fair, PDC meeting and other activities. What was once known as EHU’s, the name of these community groups has changed through the years, identified as Community Clubs, Farm Bureau Units, Home Demonstration Units (HDU), to where they are today in Geary County – Extension Education Units.

As a long-time member of the Clarks Creek Extension Education Unit, Karen has modeled the purpose of the EEU experience: to learn and share knowledge in local community groups in a way that proactively addresses the challenges facing individuals and families.

&nbsp;Karen has led the coordination of the Open Class Special Baking Contest at the Geary County Free Fair for over 10 years. She develops the theme for each year’s special event, collects prizes from the Kansas Wheat Commission, local businesses, and individuals. She promotes the event to the community and to many youth in our county. She brings energy and excitement to the event as each product is carefully evaluated by the open class foods judge.

She uses her skills and knowledge at county fairs across north central and northeastern Kansas by serving as a foods judge, visual arts judge, and much more! She supports the involvement of community members and 4-Hers at these annual county-level events by offering helpful feedback and assigning ribbon rankings.

Karen currently serves as a community member at large for the 4-H/Sr. Citizens Building committee. This group manages the upkeep and maintenance of the very building we are meeting in tonight. She is an active participant in in the annual Building Committee fundraiser and garners donations from the community for the silent and live auctions that take place at this yearly event.

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher The annual meeting of Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) is in Manhattan is coming the first weekend of December. I truly look forward to this meeting every year, and this one is no different. However, this year’s meeting will be a bit bittersweet as KFB’s President Rich Felts will ride off into the sunset and retirement. Our members will have the tough job of electing his replacement. President Felts has guided Kansas Farm Bureau for the past eight years with steady hand, a calm demeanor and an artful grace that has led to our organization reaching new heights. I have had the honor and privilege to a front-row seat at the board table. I consider Rich a friend and, more importantly, a mentor. I have watched as he has provided leadership and guidance on issues and made decisions that will affect our organization, our state and all of agriculture for years to come. I believe President Felts has left Kansas Farm Bureau in the best position we have ever been in and laid a foundation to ensure success in the future. Personally, I have been able to seek Rich’s wisdom and opinion on many things, and he has always been gracious and thoughtful. I have always taken heed of his advice, and I hope I can offer others the same leadership and experience. I am not sure I have ever been around someone as caring, dedicated, gracious or as empathetic as President Felts. He is truly the living example of servant leadership; I wish there were more leaders like him. You will never find anyone who cares more for Kansas Farm Bureau or agriculture. I wish everyone could know the hours and miles Rich has put into representing Kansas Farm Bureau. He has been the face of the organization; one we were proud to have representing farmers and ranchers. I doubt there is anyone who came in contact with Rich who was not better because of it. While I understand his decision to step down and spend more time with his wife, Shirley, and the rest of their family, I hope Rich knows how much all of us will miss him both as the head of Kansas Farm Bureau and as a person. I also know he will still be around and always just a phone call away, which is reassuring. I will also miss Shirley equally as much. If a greeting from Shirley can’t brighten your day, you are in bad shape. Her joy and happiness are always contagious. President Felts will leave a tremendous legacy in the organization and in its future. Generations will be able to make better decisions and advocate for our way of life because of his leadership and for that we will be forever grateful. I know this is not goodbye and we will still see each other, but not nearly enough. I also know that Rich will probably not be comfortable with all of this attention, and that is part of what makes him a truly amazing individual. Rich and Shirley, I hope you enjoy your well-deserved rest but please also know how much we all appreciate your dedication and sacrifice in the name of Kansas Farm Bureau and agriculture in general. We are all better for knowing you.

A Rich Legacy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Veterans who may have been denied service-connected benefits before need to apply again after the passage of the&nbsp;Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxins Act of 2022, also known as the PACT Act back in August.

"The PACT Act is really probably the largest health care and benefit expansion in VA history," said&nbsp;VBA Regional Office Director Donna Meyer-Hickel. "It expands VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances."

Because of the expansion of benefit dates and exposure opportunities that are now considered qualifying for VA assistance, any Veterans from Vietnam forward should consider reapplication.

"Because this is going to be such a massive expansion, we're going to have to phase in hospital care, medical services and other care gradually, over time for three different categories of Veterans," said spokesperson Jeff Herndon. "Category one is Veterans who participated in a toxic exposure risk activity while serving on active duty, during training, or even inactive duty training. Category two is Veterans who were assigned to a duty station in certain locations during specific periods of time. There's a lot of information, a lot of locations, a lot of dates. That is on or after August 2, 1990, running up through September 11, 2001. Category three is going to be Veterans who deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Freedom Sentinel, Iraqi Freedom and a few others, as well. It's critical that Veterans visit <a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits/">VA.gov/PACT</a> and apply for health care as quickly as possible."

If you're not internet savvy, you can still take your DD-214 and this past year's tax return to any <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/255ab594-fa22-4473-8fd9-2674a0bee548">VA clinic</a> to sign up, or there is a special event coming up next month in Wichita.

"You do not have to pay anybody to file for your health care," Herndon said. "You do not have to pay anybody to file a disability claim. Come see us December 10, Saturday. Down at the medical center in Wichita, in our auditorium, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., we're going to have a one stop shop for Veterans to come in and handle PACT Act related issues. If you're already enrolled for VA health care, you'll have an opportunity to get your toxic exposure screening. We'll have some education classes going on to learn more about the PACT Act. We'll have plenty of people there to assist with disability claims and we'll be able to enroll you for health care, if you're not enrolled already."

The passage of the PACT Act helps VA improve research, staff education, and treatment related to toxic exposures.

Top award winners in the parade included the Mayors Award which went to the C.L. Hoover Opera House, Chamber Award to the Next Step Dance Studio, Founder's Award to Michelin, Youth award to Clarabels Dance Studio and the County Commission award to the Clark's Creek 4-H Club.

Award sponsors included DEL Motors for the Founder's Award $150, Boyd &amp; Girls Club for the Youth Award $150, Chamber of Commerce for the Chamber Award $150, Central National Bank the Mayor's Award $200 and the Geary County CVB the County Commission Award $150.

Christmas Parade opens the holiday season in Junction City

MANHATTAN —Two people were injured in an accident Thanksgiving night in Manhattan.

Just after 11:30p.m. Thursday, a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Jose Orona, 25, Manhattan, was northbound on Seth Child Road at Anderson Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The vehicle crossed from from the inside lane into the outside lane and struck the rear of a 2006 Toyota Highlander driven by Sabrina Reyes, 21, Manhattan. The impact caused the SUV to strike the guard rail, and roll several times coming to a stop upside down on an embankment near the shoulder. 

The Mitsubishi spun several times, and came to a stop in the southbound lanes. EMS transported both driver to Via Christi - Reyes for evaluation of general soreness with no serious injuries.&nbsp;

 Orona was later air-lifted to to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of a severe head laceration and dislocated hip, he is expected to recover, according to the RCPD.

Junction City firefighters responded to residential working fire at 948 Grant Ave, lot 381. on Monday at 12:53 a.m.. Dispatch advised that a Trailer House was on fire. 

On arrival the trailer house was fully involved with fire. A single fatality was found inside the residence. The Kansas State Fire Marshal office was called. KSFM took over investigations once on scene and Engine crew remained on scene to assist with fire extinguishment and overhaul. 

No first responder injuries were reported. Multiple agencies were involved to help assist with this scene, included JCPD, Investigations, and KSFM.

Junction City Fire Department confirms a single fatality in an early morning fire

RILEY COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before noon Friday in Riley County.

The Riley County Police Department reported a 2017 Cadillac CTS drive by&nbsp;by Joni Feldkamp, 64, of Baileyville, was involved in a single-car in the 4600 Block of Highway 13.

EMS transportd Feldkamp to Via Christi for treatment of a leg injury. The RCPD released no additional details.

Ten Days of Christmas will be in full swing in Junction City

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies located a two-vehicle hit and run just after 2 a.m. Saturday. According to the Sheriff's Department Demitrius D. White, Fort Riley, was traveling westbound on K-18 at mile marker 177 in a Chevrolet Camaro. His vehicle was hit from behind by a black sedan that fled the scene.

No injuries were reported. White's vehicle was towed from the scene by a wrecker service.

On Nov. 18, seven Jobs for America’s Graduates of the Karns School,  and 11 residents of Brookdale Junction City enjoyed a game of Pictionary. Students also shared their future goals after graduation, and the seniors shared their past career and lifestyle events. One student played a song on the guitar for everyone, and others were making plans for the next visit. 

Four residents at Brookdale also continue to write pen pal letters to JAG Students throughout the school year.                                                         Thanks goes to Sandra Havel, JAG Specialist and April Vasquez, Resident Program Coordinator for planning this in-person activity with I.C.A.R.E.

Geary County 4-H Foundation has set an enrollment deadline of Jan. 1 to receive scholarship funding from the foundation for the current 4-H year. 4-H members need to be enrolled by Jan. 1 to receive any event scholarship funds and / or post-secondary education scholarships made available by the foundation.

4-H Council has chosen Saturday, Feb. 11 for Geary County 4-H Club Day.

4-H members will be required to attend at least four regular monthly meetings of the 4-H club in which they are enrolled between Oct. 1 and June 30 to participate in the project / livestock auction held at the end of the fair in 2023.

Key Geary County 4-H dates are released

Junction City residents can enjoy the 27th annual Christmas Parade beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday. It is sponsored by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce and will be broadcast on 107.9 FM / 1420 KJCK.

According to the Chamber of Commerce there will be 41 entries in the parade. The Junction City High School J-Steppers and Marching Band are scheduled to be the first entries.

The parade route runs from the parking lot area at the old high school down Eisenhower to 6th Street and then east to Washington Street downtown before going north a short distance on Washington.

On Wednesday, November 23rd, Brig. Gen. Niave Knell, deputy commanding general of the 1st Inf. Div. and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran helped serve a Thanksgiving holiday meal to Soldiers at the Cantigny Warrior Restaurant on Fort Riley.

The Thanksgiving meal was open to all Soldiers and civilians and included nine protein options including:&nbsp;roasted and smoked turkey, steamship round, and glazed ham.

According to the coordinator, Margaret Kilpatrick, there will be meal pick up in the alley adjacent to the church at 113 W. 5th Street for those who pre-ordered a meal or dine-in eating will be available.&nbsp; Pick up will be from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. and dine-in from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Dec. 10 will be the date for the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation's Puttin' on the Glitz fundraiser at the Courtyard by Marriott. Cost to attend will be $110 per seat or $800 per table.&nbsp;

Activities will range from a prime rib buffet, pasta bar and salad station, to DJ Jonathon Bartlett from Remix DJs in Kansas City. There will also be a live auction and the Still Puttin' on the Glitz, which is an after party until midnight.

Monday evening, he sang Tasha Cobb's "Break Every Chain" during the live round.
