ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ty Zentner kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime as 13th-ranked Kansas State beat No. 3 TCU 31-28 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, leaving the Horned Frogs to wait another day to find out if they had already done enough to get into the four-team College Football Playoff.

The Wildcats set up&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=35173166">the winning field goal</a>&nbsp;after TCU had the opening possession of overtime and Kendre Miller was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=35173151">stopped short</a>&nbsp;on consecutive plays from inside the 1.

Deuce Vaughn ran for 130 yards and a touchdown and Will Howard threw two TDs for the Wildcats (10-3, No. 10 CFP), who six weeks earlier had jumped out to a 28-10 lead early in the second quarter before TCU scored the game’s last 28 points.

That was one of five games the Horned Frogs (12-1, No. 3 CFP) won when trailing after halftime. But they couldn’t do it again with the chance to guarantee being the first Big 12 team other than Oklahoma to make the playoff.

“We got beat today and now it’s out of our hands. That’s something that we wanted to do is be in control,” TCU quarterback Max Duggan said. “All we can do is kind of watch."

TCU, the first Big 12 team to complete a regular season undefeated since Texas in 2009, could still get into the playoff. While their case was helped when fourth-ranked Southern California (11-2) lost 47-24 to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night, the Frogs now have to wait until the final CFP rankings come out Sunday.

“I think we’re certainly deserving. I think the league is one of the best leagues in the country to go through, undefeated in the league, certainly we ought to get in," first-year TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. “And I don’t think we should be punished for coming to the Big 12 championship game.”

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said before the game that TCU, with first-year coach Sonny Dykes, already deserved to be in the playoff.

“You look at their strength of schedule. You think about how they’ve performed all year long,” Yormark said. “I think regardless, they should be in, for sure.”

Kansas State coach Chris Klieman agreed after his team reached 10 wins for the first time since 2012, when the Wildcats won the Big 12 title when there was no championship game.

“TCU should be in the in the CFP, they’re one of the best four teams,” Klieman said. "We went toe to toe with them. I thought we could go toe to toe with them and find a way to win. It was an exceptional football game.”

Max Duggan, who went from losing his job as TCU's starting quarterback going into the season to now being a potential Heisman Trophy finalist, threw for 251 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for 110 yards with an&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=35172923">8-yard score with 1:51 remaining in regulation</a>.

Duggan was stopped just short when stretching for another touchdown when TCU had the ball in regulation, dropping his helmet face-first into the turf when looking up and not seeing a touchdown signaled. The spot was upheld after a replay review, and two plays later the quarterback was standing alone well behind the play with his hands on his helmet when Miller, who had a 6-yard TD earlier, was stopped short to give the ball to K-State.

Vaughn’s 44-yard touchdown, including an open-field move that led to a defensive back falling down yards from him, made it 28-17 and capped a drive set up after Julius Brent intercepted a pass by Duggan in the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter.

But TCU scored the last 11 points of regulation, including Griffin Kell’s 42-yard field goal with 7 1/2 minute left. The kick ended a drive that Duggan kept alive with a 16-yard pass to Taye Barber on fourth-and-10.

Duggan went to his knees in the end zone, clearly exhausted, after his 8-yard TD run late in regulation. That came right after his 40-yard sprint down the left sideline after scrambling away from pressure on the previous play, though he still had to get up and throw a tying 2-point conversion to tight end Jared Wiley.

He also had runs of 15, 13 and 19 yards on the drive, the longest of those three converting a fourth-and-2 from near midfield. He appeared to throw a 38-yard TD pass after that, but Jordan Hudson was called for offensive pass interference for pushing off to make the catch.

TCU went 92 yards in 13 plays on its opening drive of the game, going ahead 7-0 on Duggan’s 1-yard pass to Barber, but scored only three points its next six drives before halftime.

Kell missed a 55-yard field goal attempt on the Frogs' next drive, and K-State capitalized on Howard's 6-yard TD to Ben Sinnott, never to trail again. Howard made it 14-7 with a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Just like 2014, the inaugural season of the four-team playoff, TCU&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-texas-ohio-state-buckeyes-d365a4f4912f69472562eb0cc0d99cf1?">went into its last game before the final rankings</a>&nbsp;at No. 3, with Ohio State fifth.

TCU got left out that time, even after a seven-TD win over Iowa State in its regular-season finale before the Buckeyes beat Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten title game later that day to make the playoff and win the national title. But this year, the Buckeyes (11-1) missed their conference title game after a loss last week to Michigan.

Kansas State wins the Big 12 football championship

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to I-70, mile marker 310 for a single vehicle rollover accident just after 5 a.m. Saturday. According to the Sheriff's Department, Jonathan Shelley, Grantsville, Maryland was westbound in a Ford F-150 when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled twice before&nbsp; coming to rest in the median.

 Shelley initially did not report any injuries but late complained of wrist and other injuries. He was evaluated at Geary Community Hospital. The vehicle was removed by a wrecker service.

Todd Godfrey, Junction City, is coordinating a Santa Claus JC program where you can schedule Santa Claus to visit with children on Christmas morning. He has opened a Santa Claus JC page on Facebook and Instagram.&nbsp;

Todd is continuing a tradition that goes back to his own childhood. "My dad had set up so parents could contact him prior to Christmas with gifts that Santa Claus was giving their children for Christmas and provide a phone number. And then those&nbsp; children were actually given a phone call Christmas morning from Santa Claus." Godfrey saw the good impact of those calls on the children.

"We would prefer that if you want a phone call from Santa Claus on Christmas morning that you actually message that page ( Santa Claus JC ) with the child's name, probably their age and then how to interact with them a little bit better. " Include information on the gifts being provided by Santa Claus and a telephone number to call so the message can be relayed to Santa Claus so he can talk with the&nbsp; children on Christmas morning.

Santa Claus JC program comes to Junction City

TOPEKA – Humanities Kansas recently awarded $9,610 to the Black History Trail of Geary County, Inc., in Junction City to support the first phase of an outdoor signage project that will educate citizens and visitors about the history of Black residents of Geary County. Jo Bogan serves as project director.

The Black History Trail of Geary County (BHT) was formed earlier this year as an educational 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, with Jim Sands, retired city commissioner, as president, and Jo Bogan as project director. Fourteen historical sites are proposed for Phase 1 of a walking/driving trail, including churches, neighborhoods, schools, lodges, a cemetery, a baseball stadium, and a VFW post. BHT is working closely with site representatives to determine the best wording and locations for the signs. A centrally featured site will be Ninth Street, the former Black business district that was “urban renewed” out of existence. Ninth Street has been the subject of a film and several books, but residents insist that there are many stories of Ninth Street still to be told. “My recollection of East Ninth Street was about music, soul food, dancing, pool tables, card games, ice cream shops, night life—good to great times,” said Jim Sands. BHT will continue recording memories of Ninth St. and other aspects of local Black history throughout the year, together with the Geary County Historical Society.

“Humanities Kansas is proud to support this project exploring Kansas history and culture,” said Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas Executive Director. “It’s exciting to see local stories being told and preserved in so many different forms.”

Upon receiving news of this award, Project Director Jo Bogan said, “We are so proud of this recognition from Humanities Kansas! This grant will support Geary County residents and visitors as we journey into the echoes and whispers of the past. Together, we will peek into history and marvel at the perseverance of the human spirit!”

MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) announced today the creation of the Rural Kansas Apprenticeship Program (RKAP) developed with a grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Office of Registered Apprenticeship to help address workforce needs in rural communities across Kansas. “We’re excited about this partnership opportunity to offer a program where employers and employees grow alongside each other,” says Joel Leftwich, KFB chief strategy officer. “RKAP will assist businesses to create individual programs to meet their needs while employees will receive on-the-job training, mentorship and increased earning potential.” RKAP is Kansas’ first registered apprenticeship program focused solely on agriculture and rural communities to provide industry-driven career pathways for farmers, ranchers and small businesses serving agricultural areas. Registered apprenticeships benefit&nbsp;employers by developing a skilled and loyal workforce. Meanwhile, apprentices enjoy a full-time job with a certified credential showing mastery of their craft. “Apprenticeship programs allow us to expand the skillsets of our workforce to meet the needs of rural communities,”&nbsp;says Shonda Atwater, director of Apprenticeship and Internship for the Kansas Department of Commerce. “Investing in talent – a key pillar in the Kansas Framework for Growth – is critical because it creates opportunities for our young people to thrive.”&nbsp; Registered apprenticeships can be tailored to meet the needs of every business and industry. For the first time in 17 months, the Junction City area had monthly mean temperatures below normal. The last time we had below normal monthly temperatures was May, 2021. Additionally, for just the fourth month this year, we had above normal precipitation. 

The average daily high in November was 52.0 degrees, 2.3 degrees below normal. The average overnight low was 33.4, which was actually 0.9 degrees above normal. But this gave us a monthly mean temperature of 42.7, 0.7 degree below normal. The area had experienced 17 consecutive months of above normal monthly mean temperatures. 

The warmest temperature in November was the high of 80 on the 1st. The lowest temperature was the morning low of 16 on the 18th of the month. There were two temperature records set during the month and one record tied. The low of 67 on the 9th set a record high low temperature. The previous record was 54 set in 1949. The daily high of 30 on the 18th set a new record low, daily high temperature for that date. The old record was 34 set in 1972, Lastly, the low of 60 on the 3rd tied the record high low for that date. The record was originally set in 1983. 

A cold front that settled into the area from about the 10th to the 20th brought unusually cold temperatures into the area and accounted for the below normal month temperatures. The warmest November on record was in 1999 with a monthly mean temperature of 51.8 degrees. November of last year was the 6th warmest November on record. The coldest November on record was in 1985 with a chilly monthly mean temperature of only 35.2 degrees. After very dry late summer and early fall weather it was a nice change to have above normal rainfall and even a little snow. 

A rainfall event on the 4th and 5th of November delivered the monthly November normal precipitation and then some. Average November precipitation is 1.42 inches. Milford Lake received 2.07 inches of precipitation and Junction City received 2.41 inches. In the middle of that mid-month cold snap, we also received some snow with 1.0 inches of snow being recorded in Junction City which is the long-term November average for snowfall and was the first of the snowfall season. 

Year to date we are still well below normal precipitation. Average precipitation through the end of November is 32.40 inches. Milford Lake has received 27.29 inches and Junction City 29.15 inches.December brings us the end of the year, the official start of winter and moves us into our driest time of the year. Expected high temperatures start December at 46 and by New Year’s Eve we are down to 39. Overnight lows range from 26 on the 1st down to 20 on the 31st. Saturday is the day for the 39th annual Tour of Homes at Fort Riley which will feature 12 historic homes and two chapels. The location of the tour is the Historic Main Post at Fort Riley. Self-guided tours begin at the Custer House from 3 to 7 p.m.

You can see historic houses on Post decorated for the holiday season. The tour includes the historic main post chapel and St. Mary's Chapel, the first stone chapel erected in Kansas, completed in 1861.

BELVUE - According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, on November 28th, 2022, deputies responded to the 200 block of Noble Street in Belvue on the report of a past theft of a trailer.

The trailer was stolen at approximately 4:45 am on Sunday, November 27th, and was towed away by a white GMC Sierra 2500 with damage to the front end including the bumper, grill and hood.

The trailer is described as a white 2017 Forest River tandem axle 14’ bumper-pull with a missing fender on the driver’s side. The trailer contained a red Jahn’s United hydraulic jack system with&nbsp;accessories for lifting and moving houses. 

The total loss is estimated to&nbsp;exceed $50,000. The Geary County Historical Society’s second annual Festival of trees is underway. Silent auction bidding is ongoing Tuesday-Saturday 1 to 4 p.m. and culminates with a Christmas mixer and final bidding event on Sunday December 4th from 6-8 p.m.&nbsp;

Throughout the Festival of Trees, Kaw Theater cinnamon candy will also be available for sale at the museum. This local favorite was sold by the Heyl family and the recipe is held at the Historical Society.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged scam in Manhattan.

On Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft by deception in the 2900 block of Princeton Pl. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Community First Bank and a 50-year-old woman reported she was called by an unknown suspect claiming to be a "Captain Kyle Poser" who told her she had a jury duty warrant and needed to pay him $800 in Walmart gift cards to settle the warrant which she did.

&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

As a reminder, RCPD and other law enforcement agencies will never call anyone asking for money, especially through gift cards, this is always a scam.

Fort Riley’s annual holiday tree lighting ceremony takes place Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Ware Parade Field, 500 Huebner Road.

Highlights of the event include a children’s choir from Fort Riley Child and Youth Services, the lighting of the 20-foot tall tree and a visit from Santa Claus.&nbsp;Brig. Gen. Niave Knell, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley deputy commanding general, is scheduled to speak before the switch is flipped to light the tree, which stands in front of the Fort Riley garrison headquarters. Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus indoors following the tree lighting. Hot chocolate and cookies will also be available.

Operation Santa Claus will be accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys in the $10 - $20 price range for children of Soldiers, E-5 and below. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

The event is open to the public. Visitors who do not have a Department of Defense ID card can get a pass at the Visitor Control Center near the Henry Gate, Exit 301 off of I-70. The Junction City Fire Department has announced the retirement of Captain Matt Jackson. He has served the community for 34 years. 

Jackson was hired as a Firefighter/EMT on June 28, 1989. Captain Jackson has served in many positions during his career with the Junction City Fire Department. 

The public is invited to help celebrate his retirement at a reception on Friday, December 16 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the gymnasium at the Junction City Municipal Building, 700 N Jefferson Street.

The residents of the homes are elderly and/or disabled. United Way already received several calls, emails, and thank you's from the residents.&nbsp;

Big Red One Soldiers assist local residents

MANHATTAN —One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Tuesday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 1995 Buick Regal driven by Alexander Arnwine, 19, of Manhattan was westbound in the 2600 Block on Kimball Avenue.

The car left the roadway, struck a tree and overturned in the front yard of a house. 

EMS transported Arnwine to Via Christi for treatment for treatment of a significant leg laceration and ankle and hand pain.

There will be some doctor changes that will apply when Geary Community Hospital is merged into Stormont Vail Health on Jan. 1.

Ashley King, GCH Public Relations Specialist, has confirmed that Dr. Jason Butler will remain at GCH in the emergency room on a full time basis. He has been employed by the Rural Health Clinic as a family practice physician.&nbsp; "And so we're excited that he will still be here to help with our population when they're at their most vulnerable point. "

"Dr. Todd Frieze is going over to Konza Prairie Community Health Center, " said King. He has been working as a family practice physician at GCH. King also noted that Chris Gardiner, physician assistant, is retiring at the end of the year. All three have been Geary Community Hospital employees.
