Pach is an Associate Professor of History at Ohio University. He specializes in the history of U.S. foreign relations and recent U.S. history. His research has focused on U.S. involvement in the Cold War and the Vietnam War as well as the Eisenhower, Johnson, and Reagan presidencies. Just before 1p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 5000 block of Murray Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Two 24-year-old men reported a storage unit was broken into and an MK18 AR-15 rifle, a Century Arms AK Draco, two CZ 9mm handguns, an antique black powder revolver and ammunition were stolen.

RCPD: Multiple guns taken in Manhattan burglary

Members of&nbsp; the Geary County Historical Society celebrated 50 years for that organization with their ice cream social on Sunday. Heather Hagedorn, Executive Director, said there was a strong turnout and music provided by the Kansas Brigade Band, JCHS Jazz Band and JCHS Orchestra.&nbsp;

The event, which is a fundraiser for the Historical Society, included&nbsp; the sale of a variety of food items ranging from pies and cakes&nbsp; to hot dogs and hamburgers. "It's just a great community event.

Members of the Geary County Commission along with Society President Florence Whitebread all agreed to be pied in the face as part of the activities.

Not only is this the 50th year for the Society, but it is the 40th year for the building at 530 North Adams to serve as the location for the museum.

Historical Society celebrates 50 years

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Over the past decade or two, farmhouse décor has been an in vogue style of interior design. It makes me chuckle when I think about people who don’t live on a farm trying to create clean and pretty spaces through white wash, distressed paint and vintage hardware. Real farmhouses are rarely as desirable as this style is made out to be. I live in a real farm house and can guarantee my house won’t be featured on HGTV anytime soon. I honestly don’t think there is anything in my house that resembles the farmhouse style. However, the character that inspired designers to want to recreate the functional, no frills feel of country living, can be seen in many places in this old farmhouse. Every house has its own story. Our house’s story began as a kit house made by Sears and Roebuck that was delivered by train and assembled by its owner. We don’t know the exact year the house was delivered but estimate it was likely around the 1920s. The house was built just a few yards from the original homestead, which was still standing until about a decade ago and could fit in our kitchen. I can imagine the excitement and pride that must have been felt when this model was selected. It was a statement of perseverance and success to move from a house that was merely shelter to what was likely the equivalent of a mansion for the time. The trade-off of our house’s cool story is it was built by farmers not professional carpenters. The house is sturdy and functional, even though it has lots of little imperfections that are a product of the original DIYers. The house has seen a lot of lifestyle change in the last century: the installation of indoor plumbing, electrification and the move from wood stoves and chimneys to a furnace and air conditioning. Some of the remnants of these eras can still be seen in things like a few push button light switches or nob and tub lights from the original electrification, which have been preserved as novelties. We have also seen glimpses of the interests and taste of former home owners as we have worked to make the house our own. While tearing out outdated carpeting to take advantage of the original hardwood floors, we found decorative room mats that were in style during the time of construction. Each time we discover a new detail in the house, it’s like the house is telling the story of generations that have lived here before. Though each family who has called this house their home has been unique, they all share some things in common. The kitchen has prepared many meals for families who work the land. The floors have been tracked with mud and dirt more times than they have been clean. The rooms have played host to moments of joy, hope, and love that hopefully outweighed the times of worry and grief. The bay windows provided protection for the extreme Kansas weather that has often been a blessing and a curse. Our house is worn and imperfect because it is a place where life has been lived. Character like that can’t be replicated for a home good store. This house will never be as pretty as homes designed to look like the farmhouse style, and that’s OK with me. According to the Riley County Police Department activity reported a 2013 Honda Civic driven by Shelby Innes, 23, Manhattan, struck an embankment in near the intersection of Pillsbury Drive and Garibay Lane in Manhattan

The car went airborne and landed on its side. EMS transported Innes to Via Christi for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

Manhattan woman injured after car goes airborne, lands on its side

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on sex allegations. Just after 8p.m. Friday, police arrested 55-year-old Charles McMullen of Ogden on requested charges that include one count of rape in connection to a September 2, 2022, incident involving a 58-year-old female victim, according to the Riley County police department.

He is also accused of an additional count of rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery in connection to a July 5, 2022, incident involving a 51-year-old female victim. Both victims were known to McMullen.

McMullen remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $500,000.

FORT RILEY, Kan. - Kansas State University’s annual Fort Riley Day kicked off Saturday, September 17 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan. This tradition is a celebration of the long-standing partnership between the university and the military community. 1st Infantry Division Deputy Commanding General-Support, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Niave F. Knell, and 1st Inf. Div. Command Sergeant Major-Riley, U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Albert Serrano, engaged with community members in front of interactive and static displays. These displays allowed the Fort Riley community to bring their equipment for the KSU community to see. “We have a great partnership with [KSU],” said Knell. “We really appreciate the opportunity to come and enjoy the game and that they invited us here, especially where we get to have displays, and get to just show people that are coming to watch a football game that this is a little piece of the Army in case they don't get to see that...We just bring a piece of Fort Riley to K-State which is really nice.”&nbsp;

"We're going to allow them to use our simulators. That's a tank simulator and that's our aviation simulator, said Stewart. "How the catch is that will have to go through our recruiters to use that."

The Family Readiness Group will sell 14 separate food items for the public to choose from. They will have apple menus plus food items such as hot dogs and hamburgers. There wlll be traditional apple pie sales by the Historical and Archaeological Society featuring pies made using Libby Custer's recipe.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Mustang driven by Robert S. Collins, 21, Sarona, Wisconsin, was&nbsp; westbound on Interstate 70 three miles east of U.S. 77.

A 2014 Subaru XV Crosstech driven by Leah B. Henderson, 43, Salina, and a 2013 Ford Fusion driven by Patrick O. Dye, 47, Marion, struck the Mustang as the driver attempted an illegal U-turn.

EMS transported a passenger in the Fusion identified as Sarah L. Dye, 38, Marion, to the Geary County Hospital. The KHP reported no other injuries. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm watch for Saturday evening

Junction City police have confirmed that they are investigating an incident at Godfrey's Indoor Shooting Range and Tactical Supply. A social media statement was released by the business on Saturday.

"This morning shortly after we opened, we had a customer ( whose identity has not been released ) take their life in the shooting range. The Junction City Police Department is continuing their investigation with this incident. We appreciate all of the support we are getting, and we ask for continued prayers for our employees. In this industry, it’s not if, but when. It is unfortunately something that we have to plan and train for, and our employees did exactly what they were supposed to do. We will remain closed in the short term for obvious reasons and will make an announcement when the shooting range will reopen.&nbsp; "

JCPD is conducting an investigation into an incident 

Junction City has been accepting applications for a parks and recreation director. City Manager Allen Dinkel noted on Friday that 16 applications had been submitted. He is hopeful someone can be named for the position by early October. There is currently an interim director in place.

Food will be served from 3-6 p.m. ranging from ice cream and pie to hot dogs and hamburgers. The Paint Barn will do face painting during the event. The Kansas Brigade Band will perform at 3 p.m. followed by the JCHS Jazz and Orchestra at 4 and 5 p.m. respectively.

There will be an extreme cake walk at 4 p.m. at a cost of $1 per game, and raffle tickets will be sold to win a chance to pie a county commissioner at 5 p.m. The Ice Cream Social is being sponsored by Dillons and Smithfield Food.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has ordered Evergy to explain a $1.2 billion increase in the company’s capital spending plan filed this year compared to projections shared when the company presented its Sustainability Transformation Plan (STP) last year.&nbsp; The new order requires that a workshop to discuss the matter be scheduled by September 28 and take place before December 1, 2022.

During the workshop, which can be viewed by the public on the KCC YouTube channel, Evergy will have the opportunity to explain the necessity and impact of the proposed capital spending and answer questions from Commissioners, Commission Staff, and the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board (CURB). Prior to the workshop, Evergy is required to file updated and comprehensive financial modeling showing expected retail rate changes resulting from the continued increases in projected capital expenditures.

Evergy is required to file a Capital Investment Plan with the KCC annually. A report filed by Commission Staff in response to the 2022 report expressed concern that the expenditures outlined exceeded those reported in the STP by 21.82%. The 2022 five-year Capital Investment plan was $1 billion higher than the 2021 five-year plan, and this increased spending projection was on top of a previously announced $1 billion increase between Evergy’s 2020 and 2021 five-year plan.

MANHATTAN - Initially <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/702c0720-6165-4c41-9b28-755ea301b248">arrested on June 4, 2021</a>,&nbsp;33-year-old, Aaron Lee Zachry of Junction City has been accused&nbsp;of 2 additional counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, where the offender is over 18 years of age, and the victim is under 14 years of age.

Zachry was a paraeducator for USD 383 Manhattan Ogden School District from August 2018 through the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Zachry remains confined to the Riley County Jail. Bond for these new charges is $75,000.

Former Manhattan-Ogden para accused of additional child sex crimes 

MANHATTAN&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating attempted aggravated battery in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Just after 9:15p.m. Wednesday, police&nbsp;filed a report for attempted aggravated battery, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and possession of marijuana in 400 block of S. 5th Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County activity report.

A 23-year-old and a 43-year-old man were listed as both the victims and suspects when it was reported a gun was shot into the air. 

The 43-year-old was found to be intoxicated, and a gun and suspected marijuana were found on scene. No injuries were reported
