WASHINGTON COUNTY—A Manhattan woman died in an accident just before 4p.m. Wednesday in Washington County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Volkswagen Beetle driven by&nbsp; Anne S.&nbsp;Nielsen, 71, Manhattan, was southbound on Kansas 148 three miles south of Hanover.

The driver failed to stop at a stop sign at U.S. 36.&nbsp; A westbound 2005 Ford F350 driven by Jeffry S. Clark, 60,&nbsp;Thermopolis, Wyoming, struck the Volkswagen.&nbsp;Both vehicles came to rest in the center median.

Nielsen was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Marysville Funeral Home. EMS transported Clark to the Hanover Hospital. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Manhattan woman dies after 2-vehicle crash

EL DORADO– El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) resident Cody James Torbol died Tuesday, September 20. He was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Torbol was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy. A preliminary assessment indicates the death was not related to COVID-19.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Torbol, 29, was serving a 221-month sentence, based on convictions in Riley County of Aggravated Criminal Sodomy of a child.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s guests Wednesday were Katie DeHoff, Social Studies Teacher and Head Volleyball Coach at Junction City High School; Armani Coleman, JCHS junior and Macie Muto, JCHS senior. 

DeHoff explained that she student taught at JCHS, graduated from Kansas State University, and has taught students about Social Studies for six years and has a class titled Teaching As A Career. That class gives students an opportunity to explore teaching; roles of a teacher and provides an ‘dip their toes’ into building a course, selecting curricula, planning lessons and becoming an intern at a USD 475 school while still being a JCHS student.”

During her tenure at JCHS, Katie was an Assistant Volleyball coach and is now the Head Volleyball Coach. She is also the sponsor of the Blue Jay Nation, which is a group within the high school dedicated to building a positive culture and spirit within the school.”

Macie Muto and Armani Coleman are volleyball players and are active in providing tours of the new high school; planning spirit activities; working with USD 475 elementary age students interested in playing volleyball and will be helping organize, coach and referee at an upcoming students versus the faculty volleyball game.

“Building positive relationships and taking ownership of the culture at school is important to the members of the Blue Jay Nation. Our students met with the new Ninth Graders to give them a tour of the school and shared suggestions on how to be successful when working with the staff. MANHATTAN - For more than 50 years, a Manhattan man has been adding to his collection of Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia, which now totals more than 1,300 pieces.&nbsp;

More than two years ago, Curt Herrman applied to the Guinness World Records hoping to be named the owner of the 'Largest collection of Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia,' a designation that did not exist, prior to him being notified<a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/704424-largest-collection-of-kanas-city-chiefs-memorabilia"> he is now a 'Guinness World Record' holder</a>.&nbsp;

"It was obviously elation, actually I got the notice at 5:37 a.m. a week ago last Friday...because, well, because they are based out of England, and so they're way ahead of me...but you know, they kept coming back every time I would send them something they would come back and say, 'ok, we need to have this; well, can you send us a close up of this.' and I had to make a video of everything, of me counting everything, and so when I got that email that morning, I thought, 'oh, here we go again, what else do you need?' and it was like 'Congratulations, You've now been awarded the World Record,' so it was a very happy moment." Curt Herrman says.&nbsp;

Curt received his first Chiefs item, a football, following the Chiefs' Super Bowl 4 victory.&nbsp;

"When I was 9 years old in 1970, the Chiefs won Super Bowl 4, and that year for my birthday I got a football for my birthday, and then ever since then, every year, Christmas, holidays, birthdays everybody just gave me Chiefs stuff. And over the years, I collected quite a bit and...but at one point a lot of it was in storage, but when my kids went to college, we became empty-nesters, and my wife told me 'Stop buying more stuff, you have...you don't even know what all you have.' And so, I got everything and started taking pictures and started hanging stuff up on the walls and next thing you know I had realized I had about 650, almost 700 items." Curt says.&nbsp;

Curt's collection contains no duplicates, any duplicates he receives he gives to friends who are working to build their own collections.&nbsp;

As of September 19th, Herrman's collection contains 1,312 Kansas City Chiefs items.&nbsp;

Herrman's collection keeps growing thanks to gifts, donations and things he finds while he's out and about.&nbsp;

Curt says as a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan, he would love to meet someone from the team and have them visit his collection.&nbsp;

Junction City Commissioners were questioned Tuesday night about the proposed slaughterhouse project that has been in the spotlight in recent months. One of the opponents to the project, Susan Kamm, noted that nothing has been heard recently, and asked what is going on. City Manager Allen Dinkel responded, "Nothing has been announced yet. That's all we can say at this time."

Kamm asked if the commission will discuss the project with the community or just forge ahead without allowing community input. Dinkel then stated a lot of processes will have to happen. Mayor Jeff Underhill said that there will be hearings and different zoning issues that could arise.

Kamm said opponents have been working on their end. "We just hope that you guys will come out and be forthcoming with the people that elected you."

During later discussion in the city commission meeting Dinkel noted that with any economic development project everything takes time, but companies making a large investment and they do not want to release information to their competitors. "I don't believe the City has ever, ever, ever held stuff back at least in recent years on what we're going to do but you have to put it all in place. You talk about a livestock harvesting facility, you're talking probably about half billion dollar investment by somebody. "Dinkel added information would be released when times are right.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Kenworth semi driven by Dwight E. Morey, 63, Fairmont, Oklahoma, was southbound on Kansas 15 at 1500 Avenue.&nbsp;

The semi struck a 2006 Dodge Dakota driven by Joel C. Hynes, 54, Junction City, who was southbound on Kansas 15 and had made a u-turn at 1500 Avenue. 

After impact the pickup&nbsp; entered the east ditch and flipped onto its roof. The semi entered the east ditch and came to rest in a field.

Hynes and passengers in the pickup Mary L. Hynes, 64,&nbsp; and John L. Hynes, 78, Coal Valley, Illinois, were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp; Martin Becker Funeral Home. Morey was not transported for treatment of a minor injury. John Hynes was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

&nbsp;Just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday deputies responded to the Junction City High School in reference to a possible rape that occurred at a residence on Old Highway 77 in the early morning hours, according to a media release from the Sheriff's Department.

Following their investigation, deputies arrested 45-year-old Christopher James Beem on requested rape charges and 40-year-old Melissa Sue Beem on charges of aiding, abetting rape.&nbsp;

The Geary County USD 475 public school was one of only three schools in the state of Kansas, and 297 nationwide, recognized Sept. 16 by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

The award affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in attaining exemplary achievement. Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models of effective school practices for state and district educators and schools throughout the nation.

The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories: “Exemplary High-Performing” and “Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing.” Morris Hill is being recognized as an “Exemplary High-Performing” school for demonstrating outstanding overall academic achievement.

“This is really exciting for the Morris Hill Panthers,” said Morris Hill Principal Melisa Burgess. “Our staff works hard to create positive relationships that build trust as we welcome families from around the world, and we are supportive of one another and care about our students’ academic and social-emotional success.”

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Morris Hill Elementary, and we are very proud of the staff and administrators’ efforts,” said USD 475 Superintendent Reginald Eggleston, Ed.D. “This recognition proves that focusing on student achievement and partnering with parents produces student success.”

USD 475 has received 11 Blue Ribbon School awards in the past 20 years. CLAY COUNTY—A Clay Center man died in an accident just after 6:30a.m. Tuesday in Clay Center.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Blue Bird school bus driven by Brenda G. Peterson, 71, Clay Center, was eastbound on Lincoln Avenue approaching Sixth Street.

The driver failed to see a pedestrian identified as Harold R. Mugler, 69, Clay Center, who was walking southbound across Lincoln Avenue in the crosswalk.&nbsp; The bus hit Mugler.&nbsp; &nbsp;No students were on the bus when the accident occurred, according to USD 379.

Mugler was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Neill Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

Construction is progressing on a new elementary school at Fort Riley. USD 475 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston recently noted that construction is going well on the facility which will be located on the same site as the former Jefferson Elementary school. 

The district is looking at consolidating the former Jefferson with the current Morris Hill Elementary School, "so we can have one larger elementary instead of two small elementary schools."

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7p.m. Monday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by Walter Glen Chapman, 52, Guthrie, Oklahoma, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just west of Snokomo Road.

The pickup entered the center median and the driver overcorrected back into the eastbound lane. The pickup then left the roadway into the south ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Chapman to Stormont Vail in Topeka. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

 A 34-year-old man reported a 33-year-old woman slapped him and threw a knife at him. No injuries were reported. Kelsey Fenner, 33, of Manhattan was arrested on requested charges of aggravated assault, domestic battery, and intimidation of a witness or victim. Fenner was issued a total bond of $$9,000 and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2007&nbsp;a 2007 Saturn Vue driven by Kiara Islam, 18, of Manhattan turned onto Old Claflin Road and struck a 2021 Genuine moped driven by Hunter Chambers, 19, of Round Rock, Texas who was southbound on N. Manhattan Avenue.

EMS transported Chambers to Via Christi and later to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of severe injuries.
