Freedom Fest JC opens Thursday night with the WEEE carnival. Friday night the lineup includes performances by Disco Dick and the Mirror Balls plus Paramount, an 80's rock tribute band. On Saturday the 1st Infantry Division Rock Band, a 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade Fly Over, the Rock Gods, Fireworks Extravaganza and street dance are on the schedule.

Sunday evening Brandon Estelle and Rhett Walker will perform with both of those presented by the Geary County Ministerial Association. Monday the evening lineup include Run With It, a pop rock band and the headliner Casi Joy followed by fireworks.

Geary County KSU Research and Extension has notified the public that A Case for a Cause Pillowcase Project entries&nbsp; will be received Monday, July 18 from 3-7 p.m. Exhibits will be judged Tuesday, July 19 during the Geary County Free Fair.

This contest involves sewing a pillowcase for someone in need. All pillowcases will be donated to local organizations that work with families and / or children in crisis, or experiencing difficult transitions. These children or families often pick up and move from place to place with little or no warning. Offering a child their own pillowcase to carry their few belongings in can be a comfort during transitions.&nbsp;

You can pick a cheery, colorful cotton fabric&nbsp; ( no flannel ) and make a pillowcase.&nbsp;

All of the pillowcase entries will be donated to local service agencies and organizations that work with low resource and / or homeless clients.&nbsp;

CLAY CENTER - In just two years, A Mural Movement of Clay Center has gained support of the community and beautified the town with a variety of murals.&nbsp;

Originally, the group wanted to bring quality public art to the area and bring more people to downtown Clay Center.&nbsp;

The town has become a tourist destination, with murals made using different styles of art are spread all over town for visitors to explore.&nbsp;

Support for the project has come from community members and grants, bringing in artists from across the country to leave behind a masterpiece.&nbsp;

“The community support has just been so overwhelming. The donations have come in droves and we're so thankful for the support of our local businesses, individuals and alumni of Clay Center as well.” A Mural Movement of Clay Center, cofounder Brett Hubka says.

CStanley Creative is a husband and wife team from central Florida, Christian and Jessica have ties to Kansas. Jessica was born near Shawnee Mission and still has family in the area.

“We've been kind of looking forward to doing this project for, for quite a few months now. So, we're just excited to be here and the rains cleared up so we're excited to bring this thing to life” CStanley Creative artist, Christian Stanley says.

The artists plan to have the mural completed by July 2nd, just in time for visitors over the holiday weekend to enjoy.

"Nic has decided to take another position in Manhattan with the Manhattan Country Club as superintendent there." A family member had held that same position a few years ago.

Dinkel will now begin the search&nbsp; to fill the Parks and Recreation Director post. "We'll pick an interim here shortly and move forward through the rest of the summer to keep things moving. " There will be a statewide search and possibly more to fill the job.

Youngers final day on the job will be July 10.

The ceremony honored 14 Big Red One affiliated Families for their volunteer efforts and continued support to the Soldiers and Families of 1ID and Fort Riley. "The Families we are recognizing have gone above and beyond the call of duty by giving their own personal time to make a positive and enduring impact within our community," said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Niave Knell, the 1ID senior commander. "It's only fitting that we take a minute to pause and recognize them for their actions." Each award recipient was selected and nominated by their respective brigade command teams. The awardees were Erin Kelly and Beckah Flanick, from 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1ID; Haley Watters and Gianna Fernandes, from 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1ID; Aaron Serra and Melanie Osbourne, from 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1ID; Frances Roth and Alexis Bonn, from Sustainment Brigade, 1ID; Sgt. 1st Infantry Division Hosts Big Red One Year of Family Award Ceremony

Junction City Commissioner Nate Butler said there this week that there is a lot of blight in the city and he keeps hearing it. "I keep hearing it from people. I heard from a young soldier that's been helping us on Freedom Fest. " Butler added that soldier reported the observations heard from other soldiers visiting downtown about grass in the sidewalks. The commissioner added, "People that have the businesses need to take some ownership of that and get out and clean the grass and things that are growing in the sidewalk, clean their gutters and clean the edging on the curbs."

Butler noted that we need to be proud of our city and "this city is in a trajectory for some significant changes. " He said we need to be proud of the city, and the City must look at what they own such as parking lots and planter beds. "Make sure those things are clean. "It's more than just spraying with weed killers, pulling weeds, getting those things done. "

Butler noted that fortunately people are doing that work, but the City needs to step up and get that done.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Manhattan.

Just after 10:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 1800 block of Anderson Ave. in Manhattan.

A 27-year-old man reported his .40 caliber FNH handgun was stolen from his apartment.

 The estimated total loss is unknown at this time. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it will be at least a month before they finish their investigation into alleged wrong doing by Junction City Police Dept. personnel.

As previously reported, KBI agents&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2022/06/16/kbi-investigating-allegations-made-against-jcpd-personnel/" target="_blank">executed search warrants last week Wednesday</a>, June 15, at JCPD and other police facilities in Geary County.

The KBI says their investigation started June 7. They declined to provide details about the allegations, but said the employees involved are on administrative leave.

KBI investigation will extend for awhile

New Kansas State University President Dr. Richard H. Linton was in Hutchinson at the Encampment Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds Thursday for a listening and learning town hall with the K-State Alumni Association.

"I think we have a great relationship with the community and also a great relationship with the community college," Linton said Thursday. "It's all about finding a way to help in higher education, to be able to help provide an opportunity for youth to be able to get a college degree. A big part of my visit here in Hutchinson is to be able to talk with the community college and understand how we can help them grow, how they can help us grow and how we can collaboratively work together."

Linton has spent his entire career in land grant institutions, and that is by design.

"Thirty eight years in the land grant system," Linton said. "Nine as a student at Virginia Tech getting all three degrees and then 29 years at Purdue University, The Ohio State University and N.C. State University. When I was looking and considering a President's position, it had to be a foundational land grant. There's not many foundational land grants that still believe in research, teaching, extension and outreach for the benefits of the citizens of the state. K-State's one of the few. I had worked on a number of projects 15 years ago and always valued the family feel, the authenticity, the genuine nature of the people. People in this state are so passionate about the land grant. It's a great place to be President and I'm looking at trying to do everything I can to move this university forward."

Linton knows that one area where K-State is going to be able to provide unparallelled opportunity to its students and faculty is in animal science, once the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility is fully commissioned.

"It puts us best in the world," Linton said. "It's the only facility in the United States, only one of five in the world that's BSL Level 4 for food animals. I think, when you have something that puts you best in the world in a partnership with USDA ARS, we need to be thinking about everything that we can do to be able to build upon it, to be able to make it greater. Already, we're seeing some of the benefits. Just recently, over the last couple of months, we had the biggest economic development announcement in the history of Manhattan, with Scorpion Biologics coming and providing a $650 million investment in human vaccines. We're hoping to be able to build that private-public partnership and to be able to grow what we do for the food animal industry here in Kansas, with national and global impacts."

Linton is the 15th president of Kansas State University.

K-State president visits Hutchinson, State Fairgrounds

Manhattan—Lightning is being blamed for an early morning fire in Manhattan.

Just before&nbsp; 12:30 a.m. Friday, fire crews were dispatched to 320 Rosewalk Place for a report of a structure fire, according to Assistant Fire Chief&nbsp; Sam Dameron.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story duplex with fire on the exterior gable of the structure above the garage.&nbsp; Both sides of the duplex were occupied at the time of the fire and the three occupants of the structure were able to exit without injury.

Structure loss is estimated at $10,000 to 320 Rosewalk Place and $10,000 to 326 Rosewalk Place. There was no fire loss to the contents.&nbsp; The occupants were not displaced due to the fire, according to Damron.

Milford Lake experienced extreme high water in 2019, with the lake level the second highest in the history of the reservoir. Damage repairs have been under way since then.

During a Milford Lake partner meeting this week the Operations Project Manager for the Corps of Engineers, Bill Whitworth, noted most recently a pair of popular camping loops have been upgraded to 50-amp service so that will help a great deal with the RV'ing public." Those loops are in Curtis Creek and West Rolling Hills camping areas.

In other business topics touched on during the meeting:

--The Corps will begin chip seal road work in the West Rolling Hills area after July 4th.

--Sundown Salute and the Miss Milford Lake Pageant are expected to bring more visitors to the lake.

--Milford State Park will be extremely busy in July.

--Milford Lake Marina has been in a rebuilding mode but lost a main maintenance shed Tuesday night due to high winds.

--The CVB sponsored Float Your Boat event is scheduled to return to Milford State Park in August.

--There was a strong message to wear life jackets while on the lake.

--Game wardens are needed. There have been difficulties retaining enough of them. Some are coming in from Colorado on a rotation basis every weekend to cover vacancies.

--Thunderbird and Flagstop have upgraded and opened new restaurant facilities

Rock'n Riley festival brings community together with tasty food and music

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug allegations after a two month investigation.

Just after 6p.m. Wednesday, members of the Dickinson County Sheriff's Drug Enforcement unit with the assistance of Abilene Police executed a search warrant at a home in the 700 Block of NW Tenth Street in Abilene, according to a media release.

Officers found a large quantity of methamphetamine, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, opiates and drug paraphernalia.

Officers arrested 49-year-old Mark St. Pierre and 49-year-old Sara Duncan at a home in the 700 Block of NW Eighth Street in Abilene.

Duncan is being held on requested charges of meth distribution within 1000 feet of a school. St. Pierre is being held on a requested charge of conspiracy to distribute meth. Both are also facing multiple additional requested drug charges.

Div., known as the "Devil Brigade," participated in multi-national training exercises across Europe while supporting 21 nations in support of Atlantic Resolve and Defender Europe, as well as supporting the 78th anniversary of the D-Day liberation of France in June. "For many this was their first time overseas or outside of the United States," said U.S. Army Col. Brian E. McCarthy, commander of 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. "Not only have they executed their missions brilliantly, every one of us has learned from our allies here. European armies get to train in many of the types of environments in which we all might be asked to fight and we have been sponges trying to soak up their expertise in these conditions." This ceremony marked the end of deployment for 1ABCT Soldiers out of Fort Riley and the beginning of 3ABCT's rotation. More than 1,300 customers ( sites ) were left without electricity in Junction City late Thursday morning after a thunderstorm rolled through the community. Evergy estimated that service would be restored about 12:15 p.m.

The area impacted by the outages ranged from West 4th Street on the north end to the Geary County Health Department on the south end.

Severe thunderstorm watch is in effect

More than 700 people were served in May at the Geary County Food Pantry and high demand has continued with high demand. Commissioner Trish Giordano said this week that Food Pantry Director Debbie Johns is asking for donations if possible. "I know some of the things that she said that they're crucially low on are pasta, macaroni and cheese, crackers, rice, hamburger helper and cereal."

Giordano pointed to the economy as a factor in the high demand. "Gas is extremely expensive and groceries are expensive and I think people are having a hard time. They're going where they can get some help and I'm glad that we're able to give that to them."

The Geary County Food Pantry is located at 138 West Third Street.

Commissioner Trish Giordano said this week that Food Pantry Director Debbie Johns is asking for donations if possible. "I know some of the things that she said that they're crucially low on are pasta, macaroni and cheese, crackers, rice, hamburger helper and cereal."Giordano pointed to the economy as a factor in the high demand. "Gas is extremely expensive and groceries are expensive and I think people are having a hard time. They're going where they can get some help and I'm glad that we're able to give that to them."The Geary County Food Pantry is located at 138 West Third Street.

MANHATTAN— City management and the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department&nbsp;are evaluating the&nbsp;ability to offer modified programming this fall for youth sports and other activities, due to limited staffing for scorekeepers, referees, and facility supervisors, according to a media release from the city.

While the City of Manhattan intends to offer fall volleyball and flag football, among other programs, these programs may be modified or suspended based on available resources now and moving forward. Program modifications could consist of youth leagues for which City staff can take registrations and schedule games, but volunteers or parents would serve as referees and scorekeepers.

“We simply are not able to recruit, hire, or retain employees like we did pre-pandemic,” said City Manager Ron Fehr. “We understand Manhattan residents take pride in and have supported improvements to many of our parks and recreational facilities. However, we have been challenged with workforce shortages and reduced revenues that may not allow us to continue to provide the same recreational opportunities that we historically have offered.”

The City is committed to maintaining a high quality of life for residents, including the delivery of recreation services and programs through its many facilities.

How those services are offered is dependent on available staffing, resources, and revenue to fund these programs. This includes evaluating the number of participants and adequate fees to cover costs associated with each program.

“Over the last year, we have shifted to volunteer-led programming in adult sports as well as youth soccer, which has been a successful transition,” said Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation Wyatt Thompson.

“The City provides and manages sports facilities, fields, and certain equipment to accommodate these programs. City staff, in some cases, manages&nbsp;online registration, reserves facilities, and assists with scheduling, while community groups and volunteers coordinate management of the programs, including scorekeeping, refereeing, and coaching duties. This model has reduced City expenses, allowing us to continue facilitating these programs that our community enjoys.”

If the City is unable to fully staff or fund other youth programs and activities, it might look&nbsp;to this model now and in the future, or consider suspending certain programs with low enrollment.

“Parks and recreation were at the heart of many conversations during the development of our strategic plan last year,” Fehr said.

“One key action step that came from that effort was comprehensively evaluating parks and recreation offerings to meet the priorities of the community in a way that is sustainable. We need to continue that community conversation in a constructive way. Let’s work together to find solutions.”

Throughout 2022, the City will thoroughly evaluate its parks and recreational facilities, programs, and activities so it can position itself to consistently deliver programs that are community priorities, as well as account for how future changes might impact staffing, fees, cost recovery, and overall feasibility.
