Let the Sun Shine In is the title for the Sunflower Fair in Salina on Tuesday, Sept. 20.&nbsp; The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tony's Pizza Events Center.

According to the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging there will be expert speakers, exhibits, auctions, COVID Boosters and health screenings plus prizes. The cost to attend is $25 at the door, and that does include lunch. Some people from Geary County attend this annual event.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s guests were Deb Breidenstein, Treasurer of the JC Community Band; Favian Gomez and his father Jorge and Mariah Wyche and her mother Ashley Todd. Favian and Mariah are the most recent JC Community Band’s Jack Moore Scholarship winners who attended the High Plains Band Camp at Fort Hays State University last July.

Deb told club members that the JC Community Band’s Board of Directors is made up of Victor Wong, President; Deb Breidenstein, Treasurer; Sue Hornbaker; Danny O’Brian and Ronald Atkinson. “The Band began playing as early as 1946 and played in Heritage Park in Junction City. Concerts were moved from Heritage Park to the air conditioned C.L. Hoover Opera House in 2008 and the attendance significantly increased.

The JC Community Band consists of players from the area ranging from eighth graders to older adults and also includes some First Division Band members. The directors of the band change each week. There is a two-hour rehearsal during the week prior to the concert on Sunday. Concerts are held at the Opera House on Sundays during the month of June”, Deb stated.

She also said that “Jack Moore was a percussionist and long-time band director in USD 475 and a scholarship was established in his name in 1998. Students must be a member of the JC Community Band for one year and then apply for the scholarship to attend a band camp. The High Plains Camp is a weeklong in July and costs $450 per attendee. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club donates $200.00 each year to help fund the scholarship. Other money comes from the selling of concessions at the local band concerts in June.”

Mariah Wyche is the daughter of Ashley Todd. Mariah is a senior at Junction City High School, plays the tenor sax and is currently a drum major with the high school band. Ashley said “a typical day at the High Plains Band Camp called for an early rise of 6:00 AM followed by a series of sectional and full band rehearsals throughout the day with faculty concerts in the evening.”

Favian Gomez is a freshman at Manhattan High School and comes to Junction City for rehearsals and concerts in June. Favian is a trumpet and French Horn player in the band. He is planning to major in computer science in college but continue with the study of his brass instruments. Favian has an interest in jazz and learned more about improvisation at the camp at Fort Hays.

Optimist Club members were reminded about the Geary County Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social this coming Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 PM on the grounds at the Museum on the corner of Sixth and Adams Streets.

The club’s Celebrations of Optimism are open to the public beginning at 6:50 AM at the Hampton Inn located at 1039 South Washington Street. First time attendees receive a free breakfast, which is served after 6:00 AM.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities have recovered a motorcycle stolen in Manhattan. They are still looking for the suspect.

Just after 5p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1400 block of University Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 20-year-old man reported his 2018 Honda Grom motorcycle was stolen between September 9 and 10 while he was out of town. 

On Sept. 10,&nbsp; police recovered the motorcycle unoccupied in the 3000 block of Conrow Drive in Manhattan. The suspect fled from officers who attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of Claflin Road and Nichols Street earlier the same day for no visible tag.

The estimated total loss associated with this case was approximately $3,750.&nbsp;Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=353#">Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers</a>. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Area employers and job seekers gathered Tuesday at the Junction City Municipal Building for the Patriot Day Career Fair. Eagle Radio was among the many employers that were represented.

Other employers ranged from the City of Junction City and Flint Hill Job Corps to USD 475, Kaw Valley Engineering and Michelin. There were more than 40 employees represented.&nbsp;

Patriots Day Career Fair is held in Junction City

Janis Curit, a Freshman at St. Xavier School and member of Troop 41, earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout on September 2nd. That same day, Congressman Tracey Mann presented Janis with the Congressional Award bronze medal from Washington, DC. 

Boy Scouts of America Coronado Council Executive, Kyle Smith was also present to award him the Distinguished Conservation Award from the National Scout Organization.

St. Xavier freshman earns Eagle Scout status

Corvias Foundation is awarding a scholarship to Shania Lewis, the spouse of an active duty service member. The funds will help Lewis pursue a degree in computer information systems with a concentration in cybersecurity at Texas A &amp; M, Central Texas.

“USAG Fort Riley is extremely proud of Ms. Lewis,” said Col Michael J. Foote, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley. “The $5,000 scholarship from Corvias is not only a great benefit to her, but demonstrates one of the many ways Corvias takes care of our Fort Riley soldiers and families every day. Best of luck to Shania in her pursuit of a college degree!“

Geary Community Hospital has begun their 10th session of the Medical Explorers program with area high school students. Medical Explorers began at GCH in 2016 with local high school students interested in the healthcare industry. The practical, hands-on activities by the program are a natural extension of the students Health Sciences coursework at Junction City High School. 

Students are also introduced to the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) organization, a national organization which prepares secondary and postsecondary collegiate students to enter the healthcare field. The program is open to all high school students in the community. It is being program is in partnership with the Boy Scouts Explorer Program Post 2102.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s state fair season once again, and with that comes a lot of nerves, excitement and nostalgia. I first visited the Kansas State Fair when I was 2 or 3 years old, and I have been to the state fair most years since then. &nbsp;

The first time I ever exhibited a project at the state fair was when I was 9 years old. I took a silky blue dress that I made with help from my grandma. I was so proud that I could produce high enough quality work to even qualify, and it was even more fun to search through the displays to see it in Centennial Hall, one of the buildings that features 4-H projects.&nbsp;

Since then, I have qualified to exhibit a sewing project every year as well as an assortment of foods, photography and fiber arts items.&nbsp;

Even though I have exhibited at the state fair for several years, I’ve still had many “firsts” more recently. For example, I exhibited larger livestock for the first time last year. I showed sheep for the first time when I was 15. The first couple years, my family decided that the state fair was beyond the scope of our abilities in showing larger animals, but last year we finally gave it a try. It was so much fun to show with my friends from other counties, but it was also a lot more work.&nbsp;

The biggest challenge I’ve faced with entering projects in the state fair is continuing to make improvements after the county fair. For many people, myself included, the tendency is to think that our work is done after we qualify at their county fair, but in my experience, the people who do best at the state fair are almost always the ones who keep working hard and applying feedback they received at the county level.&nbsp;

This is especially important with livestock, which must maintain a healthy body weight, while as the caretaker, the 4-H member must keep refining your and the animals’ showing skills. But even for static exhibits, improving the project after the county fair can make a huge difference.&nbsp;

If a foods judge thinks your lemon bread needs more lemon flavor, experiment with different ingredients and amounts to see what gets the best results. If a sewing judge suggests a better kind of seam finish, try it out on scrap fabric to see if it will work for your project. &nbsp;

Advice from judges is an amazing yet extremely underutilized resource, and I think part of the reason for that is timing. County fairs are during the summer when there is no school or school sports and many other activities are taking a break. The state fair takes place about a month into the school year when life has really gotten crazy again. It takes much more discipline to carve time out of a busy schedule to keep working on projects that are already “good enough.” This is without a doubt the biggest challenge I face when getting ready for the state fair each year.&nbsp;

Even though it’s a lot of hard work, exhibiting at the state fair is such a worthwhile experience and I would highly recommend it to any 4-Her who’s not sure if they want to.&nbsp;

And to those of you who aren’t in 4-H, come visit us! You will see the fruits of months of labor and the culmination of all our hard work.&nbsp;

As I participate in my last state fair, one thing I’m sure of is that I would gladly do it all again.&nbsp;

Just after 9p.m. Saturday,&nbsp; police&nbsp;responded to the report of a battery at O'Malley's Bar, 1210 Moro Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

It was reported a 44-year-old man and 44-year-old woman identified as Kelly and Travis Poland, both of Colorado, punched 21- and 50-year-old men while at the establishment. 

Police arrested the couple on a requested charge of&nbsp; battery.&nbsp; Both were issued bonds of $750 and are no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.

Colorado couple arrested after altercation in Aggieville

MANHATTAN —A Wamego man was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Sunday in Manhattan.

A 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by Will Cravens, 22, of Wamego, was traveling in the 200 Block of Fort Riley Boulevard, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Cravens lost control while braking on a curve. The motorcycle hit a curb and rolled.&nbsp; EMS transported Cravens to Via Christi for treatment of arm, wrist, ankle, and leg injuries, according to the RCPD.

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after a traffic stop and pursuit.

Just before noon Friday, sheriff's deputies stopped a suspicious vehicle on West Mackenzie Street near 4th Street in White City, according to a media release.

Deputies cited the driver identified as Dennis R. Shoaf, 44, of White City for speeding and no proof of insurance. After questioning about the insurance, Shoaf sped away and later stopped again for deputies who arrested him on requested charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, interference with law enforcement, disorderly conduct, battery on a law enforcement officer, flee or attempt to elude law enforcement and no vehicle liability insurance.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University wildlife extension specialist Drew Ricketts says managing private lands to benefit wildlife can be expensive, but there is help for landowners. &nbsp;

Ricketts said the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/" target="_blank">Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks</a>&nbsp;offers the program, Habitat First, which is funded by the Pittman Robertson Act.&nbsp;&nbsp;The program assesses a tax on hunting equipment to support wildlife research and habitat improvement.&nbsp;

Ricketts said Habitat First is less complicated than most programs, making the distribution of payments and assistance easier.&nbsp;

“Let's say you know you want to convert brome or fescue back to native grass,” he said. “The program has a per acre rate that will pay for herbicide application for that specific purpose, and they have a per acre rate that they will pay for grass seed.&nbsp;

“The first step,” he added, “is reaching out to wildlife and parks to find out who your local area biologist is. They'll set up a site visit with you, talk about your goals and set up a contract if that's something you're interested in.”&nbsp;

“If you’re thinking about managing rangelands for quail or prairie chickens, prescribed fire or tree removal, then I would recommend EQIP,” Ricketts said.&nbsp;

Ricketts said another cost-share program, Partners for Fish and Wildlife, is focused on at-risk species populations in Kansas, specifically the greater and lesser prairie chickens. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.&nbsp;

“The producer’s share of that cost can be implementing some of the practices that the producer and the biologist decide need to be done,” Ricketts said. “For example, if prescribed fire and tree removal are part of the plan, and the producer gets the area that's under contract burned a certain number of times during the contract period, that can be their share of the cost and then the tree removal would be totally covered.&nbsp;

“If there is tree removal that needs to be done, and a producer is interested in wildlife management, and they're in the prairie chicken range, this can be a very good program for them.”&nbsp;

Landowners may also receive help through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), an erosion program to help balance commodities markets. While it was not originally planned with wildlife in mind, practices associated with CRP management impact wildlife habitats and thus parts of the program are wildlife driven. &nbsp;

“Anytime we're planting native grass in areas where it’s lacking, it improves habitat for wildlife over time,” Ricketts said. “The State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement is one part that's specifically wildlife-driven, and a lot of that is in center pivot irrigation systems where the corners are planted to native grass that are good for pheasant and quail.”&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a 2016 aggravated assault have made an arrest.

On Thursday after being transported from the Denver County jail in Denver, Colorado, police arrest 33-year-old&nbsp;Francis Jackson, 33, of Denver on a Riley County District Court warrant for aggravated assault. 

The arrest stems from a January 1, 2016 incident where it was reported Jackson tried to stab a 36-year-old man with a knife in the alley behind O'Malley's bar in Aggieville around 2:00 a.m. 

No injuries were reported. Jackson remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $10,000.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers from the Riley County Police Department responded to a report of a runaway student at the Manhattan High School west campus.

School resource officers as well as officers from outside the school attempted to make contact with the student, the student ran from officers.&nbsp;

When officers made contact with the student, they bit one of the officers, and during the struggle, magazines fell off one of the officers.&nbsp;

The student was then arrested. The Riley County Police Department will release more details on Thursday.

In an email to parents on Wednesday evening, Manhattan High School principal, Michael Dorst, notified parents of the incident involving RCPD at the Manhattan High School west campus.

RCPD responds to report of attempted runaway student at MHS, email sent to all parents regarding incident

You may remember hearing about 
the Four County Fire back on Dec. 15, 2021. The fire devastated many
 acres in the counties of Ellis, Russell, Osborne and Rooks.

I remember the day vividly, despite being almost 200 
miles from those four counties. It was the strangest day I can recall in
 my entire life living in Kansas. In Manhattan, the tornado 
sirens blew in the middle of the afternoon as high winds tore roofs off 
buildings. The power went off and I could smell something burning. I 
thought at first it could be the beginning of an electrical fire. 
However, as I stepped outside, ashes were falling from the sky, and the 
air smelled of smoke.

Unfortunately, these powerful winds were occurring across the 
entirety of Kansas that day. Some wind gusts were measured at speeds of 
107 mph! This was even more frightening for western Kansas, especially 
around the Hays area, because the Kansas State Research Extension Center
 had not recorded any rainfall since Nov. 3. The area was vulnerable
 to anything that might spark a fire. Many locals concluded that the 
fire started from a spark of a broken power line in Ellis County. As it 
spread, the blaze left many people in the area wetting down their yards 
hoping to slow the fire before it took everything they had. The fire 
devastated the landscape, leaving many farmers, ranchers and other 
people fighting to save not only their lives but their livelihoods. The 
people in this area will never fully recover, but many believe it will 
take two to three years for the area to return to some sense of normal. 
It is important to remember that the Four County area still needs help! 
We must not forget how devastating this day was and that the recovery 
efforts have not ended.

Stephanie Dickerson, a multi-generational ranch owner in Paradise commented that, "Right now, the area is still in need of new 
fencing supplies and labor to recover the old fences and the debris from
 the fire."

The Four County Fire showed the Kansas Legislature a change was
 necessary for the future. In preparation for future wildfires, a bill 
passed allowing individuals to purchase fencing supplies without any 
sales tax at all. Another crucial thing to remember is that wildfires 
are hard to predict and can happen in any rural community. Insurance 
Commissioner Vicki Schmidt would like to remind people it is important 
to check your insurance plans to ensure you are covered for disasters 
like this wildfire.

On Dec. 15, rancher Chris Pelton had gotten a call that the fire 
was 7 miles southwest of Paradise and headed toward his land very 
quickly. He attempted to hold off the fires until his shop was engulfed 
in flames. Luckily, he made a quick escape but lost nearly all his 
buildings and many of his family possessions. He managed to save his 
dog, Archie, from his burning shed before he left for his own safety. 
Pelton remarked, "It was amazing to watch how people came to help with 
the recovery."

The fire did far more damage to soil than an average wildfire because
 it burned off the crop residue from many fields. This allowed powerful 
winds to blow the extremely dry topsoil away. Additionally, it took away
 people's lifelong family homes, fences, livestock and businesses. Many 
families had started these businesses from the ground up or maintained 
them for many generations.

This tragedy is significant to many people in these communities. It 
is evident they needed help and assistance in some way after this 
unpredictable and catastrophic event. An amazing saving grace effort 
came from people in the surrounding communities donating resources and 
traveling to the four counties to help with the wildfire recovery 
effort. The Kansas Livestock Foundation even managed to distribute two 
million dollars of funds to 91 Kansas applicants that were affected by 
the wildfire. The funds were donated by 2,100 generous contributors from
 41 states. Applicants lost more than 2,100 head of livestock and about 
750 miles of fencing.

Let us not forget the wildfires on Dec. 15, 2021, which show us 
that no matter how much certainty we have in our future, it can all be 
taken away by events outside of our control. However, what took place 
after the storms and wildfires are what gives me hope for our future as a
 country. There are still so many caring people who will be kind and 
helpful to people who are fighting off the worst moments of their lives.
 Please, be thankful for everything you have. If this story affects you 
in any way, please never be afraid to give to somebody who truly needs 
help in the future. It could make all the difference in the world.

the Four County Fire back on Dec. 15, 2021. The fire devastated many
 acres in the counties of Ellis, Russell, Osborne and Rooks.I remember the day vividly, despite being almost 200 
miles from those four counties. It was the strangest day I can recall in
 my entire life living in Kansas. In Manhattan, the tornado 
sirens blew in the middle of the afternoon as high winds tore roofs off 
buildings. The power went off and I could smell something burning. I 
thought at first it could be the beginning of an electrical fire. 
However, as I stepped outside, ashes were falling from the sky, and the 
air smelled of smoke.<figure>

 </figure>Unfortunately, these powerful winds were occurring across the 
entirety of Kansas that day. Some wind gusts were measured at speeds of 
107 mph! This was even more frightening for western Kansas, especially 
around the Hays area, because the Kansas State Research Extension Center
 had not recorded any rainfall since Nov. 3. The area was vulnerable
 to anything that might spark a fire. Many locals concluded that the 
fire started from a spark of a broken power line in Ellis County. As it 
spread, the blaze left many people in the area wetting down their yards 
hoping to slow the fire before it took everything they had. The fire 
devastated the landscape, leaving many farmers, ranchers and other 
people fighting to save not only their lives but their livelihoods. The 
people in this area will never fully recover, but many believe it will 
take two to three years for the area to return to some sense of normal. 
It is important to remember that the Four County area still needs help! 
We must not forget how devastating this day was and that the recovery 
efforts have not ended.<figure>

 </figure>Stephanie Dickerson, a multi-generational ranch owner in Paradise commented that, "Right now, the area is still in need of new 
fencing supplies and labor to recover the old fences and the debris from
 the fire."The Four County Fire showed the Kansas Legislature a change was
 necessary for the future. In preparation for future wildfires, a bill 
passed allowing individuals to purchase fencing supplies without any 
sales tax at all. Another crucial thing to remember is that wildfires 
are hard to predict and can happen in any rural community. Insurance 
Commissioner Vicki Schmidt would like to remind people it is important 
to check your insurance plans to ensure you are covered for disasters 
like this wildfire.On Dec. 15, rancher Chris Pelton had gotten a call that the fire 
was 7 miles southwest of Paradise and headed toward his land very 
quickly. He attempted to hold off the fires until his shop was engulfed 
in flames. Luckily, he made a quick escape but lost nearly all his 
buildings and many of his family possessions. He managed to save his 
dog, Archie, from his burning shed before he left for his own safety. 
Pelton remarked, "It was amazing to watch how people came to help with 
the recovery."<figure>

COLUMN: Remembering the Four County Fire

At Tuesday evening's USD 475 Board of Education meeting, the Board gave the opportunity for an architectural conceptual design for an Early Childhood Center to be presented.

&nbsp;Mr. David Wild requested formal approval from the Board of Education to give <a href="https://sjcf.com/">Schafer Johnson Cox and Frey Architecture</a> the authority to move forward with a conceptual design of an Early Childhood Center.

The proposed concept would include a 32-classroom facility with space for administration within the building.

Mr. Wild recommended the architecture firm would bring back 2 to 3 concepts for the facility, so the district has designs in-hand when it is time to apply for the $15 million Defense Communities Investment Program grant in 2023.

The district would then be expected to match the $15 million, for a total of $30 million to be spent on the facility, with construction of the facility projected to start in 2024.

USD 475 BoE approves request for conceptual design of $30M Early Childhood Center

At Tuesday night's City Commission meeting, Junction City Commissioners discussed with city officials&nbsp;the request for demolition of the former Knights Inn located at 1024 South Washington Street.

City officials say the <a href="https://jcpost.com/posts/10b8bd4d-9adb-40bc-a416-351b10fb47d5">structure was determined to be an unsafe</a> due to multiple cracks in the brick walls, due to settling, causing bricks to fall out.

City Manager Allen Dinkel says the property owner has received multiple notices about the condition of the building, and if the commission approves the request for demolition, the cost for demolition will be billed to the property owner and if unpaid will be assessed to the taxes. 

The property owner spoke up during Dinkel’s comments notifying commissioners that he has a contract for demolition and is working out the details before proceeding. 

City Commissioners agreed to postpone the request for demolition until the next city commission meeting on September 20th, to allow the property owner and contractor time to present a plan for demolition.
