RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged auto theft.

Just after 6:30p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft, criminal trespass, and interference with LEO in the 1100 block of Westport Dr. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;

A 22-year-old woman reported a 36-year-old woman entered her car in the Taco Bell parking lot, locked herself inside and attempted to drive away in an attempt to steal the vehicle.

The estimated total loss associated with this case was approximately $13,000. 

The car was returned to its owner after police arrested Andrea Freeman, 36, of Manhattan in connection on requested charges of theft, criminal trespass, and interference with LEO. Freeman remains jailed on a total bond of $6,000, according to the RCPD.

Masks are still required in the pharmacy while receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Fort Riley will host two family oriented events on Thursday

Tickets are on sale for Triple Trivia Night, an event to benefit the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library Foundation and the project to build a new library for Junction City, Fort Riley and Geary County. It will be held on Thursday, July 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Spin City, 915 South Washington Street in Junction City.

According to a release from the Library, tickets for this adults-only event are $40 each or $100 for three including per 3-person team or for audience members. These will be available through July 13 at the library or from any committee member. They can also be purchased online at www.jclib.org and picked up at the will call table at the event. As supplies last, tickets will be available at the door for $45 each or $130 for a three-person team.

In addition to the trivia contest, food, a cash bar, a 50-50 drawing and a gift basket silent auction will also be featured. Ticket price will also include one free drink ticket. Ticket purchasers and attendees for this event must be at least 21 years of age.

The event will feature 27 teams of three who will vie in three single elimination rounds to see who will be crowned the Triple Trivia pop culture champions of 2022. Triple Trivia Night will support the effort for a new library

Rural Water District Four northwest of Junction City has water storage capacity of 200,000 gallons. This past three-day holiday weekend the District used more than 800,000 gallons. District Director Cliff White told a Milford Lake Partners meeting there is a problem on big weekends.....for example July 4th and Labor Day. He noted if RWD 4 is pumping 400,000 gallons a day during&nbsp; those peak times they will run out of water. "More storage capacity will be looked at. "

White noted that until that is achieved commercial users such as the State Park, Corp of Engineers and Acorn's Resort will not be allowed more usage during peak periods than the amount they used during the last couple of years. They will retain the amount of water they use now but not be given more water since RWD 4 doesn't have it.

The District has the water rights but funding for storage is the issue. "Right now we're down to six to twelve hours of storage during the summer time. Because of that it creates big problems if something happens, said White.&nbsp;

White said that they are trying to find funding, but none of the approaches have been successful. "Now that they have decided how they're going to use the state revolving loan fund and the money for that there may be a possibility to gain some funding for at least part of the project. " White confirmed that they're hoping to put in a new 300,000 to 400,000 gallon storage tank. The problem is that it could take some time before that occurs.

With a limit on water storage capacity there is the possibility that could hinder future development by commercial entities around the lake, making it even more important to obtain additional water capability.

During the Milford Lake partner meeting White was asked by Rick Dykstra if the Water District Board would consider buying water from Junction City to solve the problem but White indicated that would have to be discussed with the Board. He also noted that it is not being looked at as an option now.

Craig Bender, Military Affairs Council Director for the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce has submitted his resignation. His final function for that job will be to host the Veterans Ceremony for Sundown Salute on July 4th.

Bender plans to work for Grimmer Technologies Inc. in an Army Help Desk capacity for approximately 20 hours per week, which will pay him about the same as the MAC Director job.

Bender began working for the company back in January about 10 hours per week and asked Grimmer if they would want him for 20 hours each week. He then submitted a request to Chamber President Mickey Fornaro-Dean about possibly working Monday and Friday for Grimmer and Tuesday through Thursday for the Chamber. "I said I was pretty sure I could do 90% of the job, and I said I was willing to take a $25,000 pay cut to offset not being there in the office even though I was going to do the majority of the work. "

Bender explained that Fornaro-Dean took the request to the Chamber leadership. "And leadership decided that wasn't acceptable. It had to be five days a week and so they said it's either five days or nothing and so I submitted by letter of resignation.

JC Post talked with Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Mark Claussen who said officials view the MAC Director job as a fulltime position. "We need somebody to work it in a fulltime capacity. He chose to make a decision upon that. We wish him the best. He's a great guy but we need someone working there fulltime." 

Claussen confirmed that he was sure the Chamber would fill the position because it's a needed position. "It's very valuable to the community and the Chamber."

In his new job Bender will be working from his home in Milford. "I'll be doing some instructing and then doing and then teaching some other people, kind of like third tier help desk support."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bender has served as MAC Director for approximately three and a half years. During that time he worked on a military spouse reciprocity bill in the legislature to allow military spouses to immediately begin working in their professions. He supported a military impact aid bill that will provide more money for the school district, coordinated repair of the Riverwalk Trail, worked on a bill to help disabled veterans get money off of their property tax, helped host MAC breakfasts and worked on Grub and Grooves and a welcome home event for returning Soldiers from deployment.

MAC Director will step down

There are numerus downed tree limbs in Junction City and is some locations more tree damage following a Tuesday night thunderstorm. No injuries were reported.

Winds near Junction City were clocked at one point at 66 mph.

Mother Nature pruned trees in Junction City

GEARY COUNTY - At 7:00pm on Wednesday, June 22nd, first responders were called to the scene of a motorcycle crash on Interstate 70 near mile marker 302, near Marshall Army Airfield.

Upon arrival law enforcement found a 2016 Victory motorcycle driven by Patrick Noles, of Junction City, had been involved in a single vehicle crash.

Noles lost control of the motorcycle and laid it down before both he and the motorcycle impacted guardrail, sliding to a stop.

Noles was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, where he succumbed to injuries, on Thursday, June 23rd.

Noles was not wearing a safety helmet a the time of the crash.

Junction City man has passed away following a motorcycle crash on I-70

A 24-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman reported an unknown male suspect pulled a gun on them as he passed them while driving westbound on Fort Riley Blvd. The victims also had a 2-year-old boy in the vehicle.

 Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Driver allegedly pulled gun on 2-women on Fort Riley Blvd.

Kathy Ray, MSW and Executive Director of The Crisis Center, Inc. served as the guest speaker at the June 22 JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Celebration of Optimism meeting. Kathy told the Optimists that she and her staff of 13 and on call/shift workers of 35-40, care for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault in Clay, Geary, Marshall, Pottawatomie, and Riley Counties and Fort Riley.

“When I was a teenager, my cousin was murdered by her fiancé. We saw no signs of this coming. In college, I decided to make a difference so others would not have to experience what my cousin did. That became my ‘Why’ as in why I do what I do, what is my purpose in life? Every morning when I get ready to start my day I look at my cousin’s picture to remind me,” Kathy stated.

The Crisis Center was created in 1979 after concerned community members concluded that existing services for victims of intimate partner violence and rape were inadequate. The Center offers free, confidential assistance for victims and their children with 24-hour hotlines; 24-hour crisis intervention; safe shelter; advocacy; case management; support groups and supportive counseling. We saw no signs of this coming. In college, I decided to make a difference so others would not have to experience what my cousin did. That became my ‘Why’ as in why I do what I do, what is my purpose in life? Every morning when I get ready to start my day I look at my cousin’s picture to remind me,” Kathy stated.The Crisis Center was created in 1979 after concerned community members concluded that existing services for victims of intimate partner violence and rape were inadequate. The Center offers free, confidential assistance for victims and their children with 24-hour hotlines; 24-hour crisis intervention; safe shelter; advocacy; case management; support groups and supportive counseling. USD 475 Board of Education approves administrative changes

RILEY COUNTY— It was a busy night for fire crews in Manhattan. At 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, crews were dispatched to 2300 Blueberry Drive for a report of a structure fire, according to&nbsp;Deputy Chief Ryan Almes.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story home with smoke showing from the attic. Crews entered the building and began extinguishing the attic fire.&nbsp; While on the scene, crews were alerted by the homeowner that smoke was coming from the house next door.&nbsp; 

The house at 2304 Blueberry Drive had a fire in the attic as well. The fires reached a combined second alarm and were both contained within 45 minutes.&nbsp; Riley County Fire Department provided an air trailer to the scene and personnel to fill air bottles, and also backfilled one of the stations in the City in case there were other calls for service. The house at 2300 Blueberry Drive was occupied at the time of the fire. Loss is estimated at $15,000 to contents and $50,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Taylor and Shane Sutherland. The house located at 2304 Blueberry Drive was unoccupied at the time of the fire.&nbsp; The loss is estimated at $5,000 to contents and $20,000 to the structure.&nbsp; The owner is listed as Devon Bedell and Kevin White. The cause of both fires was due to storm damage to the electrical service supplying both homes. &nbsp;The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ram 1500 pickup driven by&nbsp; Winfer R. Abernathy, 70, Junction City, was northbound on County Line Road just south of 2nd Road approximately 7 and one half miles southeast of Wakefield.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It struck the bridge and overturned in the west ditch.

Abernathy and a passenger&nbsp;Margaret Abernathy, 74, Junction City, were pronounced dead at the scene. They were both wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Power outages and downed tree limbs occurred during a severe thunderstorm Tuesday evening in Geary County. Emergency Manager noted that there were several places in the city and county where that occurred. Some trees were knocked against power lines.

Authorities went out after the storm to assess the damage. "When the storm went through we had winds close to 70 mph come through, " said Berges. He added that there was one documented report of at least 66 mph.

There was storm damage as well in the Milford Township - Milford Lake Road area but no injuries.

 Participants will need to provide their own shotgun and ammunition and pre-registration is required. The class will include trap rules, safety, shotgun and ammunition selection, range layout, shooting position and coaching through 100 targets.

The hours for the clinic at Sportsmen's Acres will be 9 a.m. to&nbsp; 3 p.m. The cost is free for youth 17 and under and $35 for adults.

Dr. Reginald Eggleston, Superintendent of USD 475 Geary County Schools, has announced a new Chief of District Operations. Karl DeArmond, Chief Information Officer, will transition into his new role effective July 1st. DeArmond has been with the district in his current position for seven years. He formerly served as the Information Technology Director at Geary Community Hospital.

“Mr. DeArmond is no stranger to district operations after having worked closely with the team during construction of the new high school and working through the pandemic response. He has the essential skills for the position and provides the district with an easy transition,” stated Eggleston.

In addition to automating the new high school while also enabling the district security program, the district Information Technology Department played a significant role in remote learning programs during the pandemic response period and was a key element to the Operations COVID response plan.

While retaining oversight of district Information Technology, as Chief of Operations, DeArmond will assume administrative responsibilities for Transportation, Purchasing, Warehousing, Print Plant, Child Nutrition services, Safety &amp; Security, facilities maintenance, and master planning.

DeArmond and his wife Jodi, a teacher at Chapman high school, are lifetime area residents.

He fills a vacancy created by David Wild who announced his intention to step down from the Chief of Operations post at the end of the current contract period, June 30.

Pilot Club of Junction City has donated $500 to Pawnee Mental Health Services to sponsor an Ice Cream social at the upcoming&nbsp;S.T.A.R.S. Camp.

The Camp is for Children ages 7-17 who have Serious Emotional Disturbances (SED). Kids come from 10 counties, including Geary.

For most of these children S.T.A.R.S. camp is the only summer camp they can attend due to the symptoms of their disorder.

MANHATTAN — If you’ve gasped at the grocery store checkout line recently, you’re probably not alone.&nbsp;

Inflation has hit American’s dinner table and it’s been painfully obvious on food eaten at home where consumers paid 11.9% more in May 2022 compared to May 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>.&nbsp;

“It’s amazing,” said Lisa Martin, an extension agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Shawnee County office. “Every time I go to the store, something I normally buy has increased 50 cents or even a dollar.”&nbsp;

Martin notes that supply chain shortages, bottlenecks in shipping and transportation, and a tight labor pool have all contributed to rising food prices. “It’s a time when all of us really need to think about how much we are spending on food and ways we can cut back,” she said.&nbsp;

Some recommendations are not new, she said:&nbsp;

Then, Martin said, stick to the plan.&nbsp;

“Once you’ve gotten the items on your list, get to the checkout stand,” she said. “Statistics have shown – and it may be higher now – that for every minute you spend looking around the store, and before you get to the checkout register, you’re going to spend another $2 in food.&nbsp;

“If you’re looking around for five minutes, that’s another $10 on your grocery bill.”&nbsp;

Saving on food costs also includes eating everything you buy, Martin said. Food waste is a major contributor to lost money. Martin suggests making the grocery store your last stop before going home, and storing perishable foods in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible.&nbsp;

“One of the things I do with foods that I need to use up quickly is I store them toward the front of the refrigerator,” she said. “Or if there is something that can be stored at room temperature, keep them on the counter so that you can easily see them when you walk into the kitchen.”&nbsp;

To encourage good nutrition, look for fresh produce – which is more abundant during the summer – and buy whole grains, brown rice, and low sodium foods. Farmers Markets can be a good source for low-cost, nutritious food.&nbsp;

“People still think fresh is the best,” Martin said. “If it’s just been picked, harvested, and delivered to the grocery store, it’s going to be full of nutrition. But fruit and vegetables also are processed soon after harvesting, so canned and frozen foods are a good option as well.”&nbsp;

Other ways to battle rising food costs, according to Martin, include:&nbsp;

Busy public meeting slate is set for Tuesday

Geary County Emergency Management issued a reminder that Tuesday is the first day of astronomical summer! It will certainly feel like summer outside with heat index values of 95-105 degrees. A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of northeast and east central Kansas this afternoon. 

The amount of solar radiation reaching Earth in the Northern Hemisphere peaks this Tuesday as the Sun ends its six month trek northward.

Summer officially begins Tuesday

Wheat harvest is under way. At Geary Grain Elevator the owner / manager Joe Hund said by about 3:30 p.m. Monday between 10 and 20 truck loads of wheat had arrived. "It's hot and dry, and the wheat is maturing quickly now. So far we've seen good quality wheat. It's got a nice red color to it with a good test weight and it's dry. "

There were average 61-62 pound test weights.

The harvest will continue for several days.
