Opponents of a proposed beef harvesting plant on the southwest edge of Junction City just north of I-70 are hosting a public meeting at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. They will focus on what the plant would mean for Junction City.&nbsp;

The plant would create jobs but they could come at a cost&nbsp; to the community. Opponents point to their concerns ranging from increased crime to a strain on hospitals, schools and social services. They believe that there would be increased traffic and accidents, increases in certain diseases and COVID, worker injuries, high turnover, domestic violence and live kill smell

There has been an indication that pros and cons of the issue will be discussed at the meeting.

Manhattan —Fire Department investigators determined the cause of the house fire at 2087 College View Road in Manhattan on Thursday night to be overloaded electrical circuits, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes.

 Multiple space heaters were plugged in which caused an overload on the electrical system.  No injuries were reported on scene.&nbsp;

Manhattan— Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire at a home in Manhattan.

Just after 9 p.m. on Thursday, fire crews were dispatched to 2087 College View Road for a report of a house fire, according to&nbsp;Assistant Fire Chief Mike Kaus.

Upon arrival, crews found the home had smoke coming from the front and roof. Crews completed a search and controlled the fire within 20 minutes.&nbsp; The occupants safely exited the structure prior to fire department arrival.&nbsp; No injuries were reported on scene.&nbsp; &nbsp; The house is a one-story house that had two occupants. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $40,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Mike Lowe of Manhattan.

An effort to obtain another brigade of troops was on&nbsp; the mind of U.S. Senator Jerry Moran during remarks to a Military Affairs Council breakfast audience in Junction City on Thursday. "I have a goal that I think this military committee would strongly support. We want another brigade at Fort Riley."

Moran's comments drew applause from the audience as he continued with his comments. "And we are working in every way that we can to accomplish that."

The senator has spent some time in Junction City this week touring the new high school and speaking at the MAC breakfast.

Freedom Fest JC is also planning some fundraisers. One will be a car show on March 26th in the parking lot and grass area across from Godfrey's Indoor Ranges and Tactical Supply, and the other will be a Golf Tournament May 29th at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club members have recognized the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Academy representative for Junction City High School, and the JC Breakfast Optimist Club/Junction City High School Student of the Month.

The Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Academy will be held at Kansas State University. Each year the JC Breakfast Optimist Club pays the tuition for a student to attend the leadership training. This year’s representative from Junction City High School will be Macie Muto. Ashley Ackerman, JCHS Communication Teacher, shared that “Macie is involved in and outside of school. She is kind, helpful; has straight A’s; does not like to be the center of attention and is a quiet leader.” Macie will attend the leadership academy in June.

The Optimists also recognized Kimberly Flores-Ruiz as the Junction City High School Student of the Month for February 2022. Sarah Reynolds, JCHS Counselor, stated that “Kimberly is determined and resilient. She is just a ray of sunshine and the person you want to be around. Kimberly has set her sights on the medical field. She is enrolled in the Health Science Pathway at JCHS.” Kimberly is a Senior at JCHS and working full time as a certified CNA. Her plans are to join the Air Force and become a nurse.

The Club has also added Ron and Amy Johnson as new members.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran told a Military Affairs Council breakfast audience Thursday in Junction City about one idea where he wants to see more action. "We are encouraging Fort Riley and we're encouraging the Army to request appropriations for better housing on post."&nbsp;

Moran noted that his office can make that request. "But it's much better for our success if the Army requests additional assets in housing."

The Senator added if that can be added with education and healthcare improvements on Post the measures will have been done that improve the chances of Fort Riley for a future third brigade. Moran made it clear he supports obtaining a third brigade of troops at Fort Riley.

The Post is due to receive a new elementary school, with groundbreaking set for March 4th. The new Junction City High School recently opened, and a new Irwin Army Community Hospital has opened in recent years.

USD 475 school board members have approved the guaranteed maximum price for renovation of the existing storage building at the McConnell Maintenance Facility. The original plan was to renovate the storage building next summer but doing so now allows for efficient use of personnel from the new Junction City High School construction project before they begin work building the new elementary school on Fort Riley.&nbsp;

According to the school district the total GMP as determined by Hutton Construction, for the renovation is $149,800. That would be funded by capital outlay money.

Junction City High School sophomore Charly Goodwin captured fifth place in the 120 pound weight class at the Class 6A State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday.

In the fifth place match she defeated Jenna Knight of Bonner Springs by a fall in just 35 seconds. "I just started with a front headlock and her leg was just right there so I locked it up with a cradle and it worked."

Goodwin sought out her father Mike Goodwin as soon as the match ended. He was a state champion wrestler during his high school career at JCHS, and is a current Lady Jay wrestling coach. "I looked at my dad and he was crying actually. But I went up and I ran to him and gave him a big ole hug."

Charly went 4-2 in matches at the state tournament. She agreed that her dad has instilled a love of wrestling in her. "At first he was really hesitant on me wrestling in eighth grade but once I started he noticed that I really started liking it a lot so we've just been in it together." Goodwin added that they have been to every practice together. " I've never been to a tournament without him." Charly noted that her mother is also a big fan. Leslie Goodwin was an athlete at Saint Xavier High School and later played college&nbsp; volleyball at Cloud County Community College and New Orleans University.

Charly is excited about wrestling at Junction City High School the next two years. The experience at the state tournament this season was a good one. "It's pretty nerve wracking but it's nothing I haven't seen before. " She called this a great week. "I've just been so excited to be here and just be around all of these wrestlers, like all the females. They're so supportive of each other."

Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson informed the JC Breakfast Optimist Club this week that the partnership with the Junction City Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Department Dive Team has saved five lives to this point. “Even if only one life were saved, it is worth it to have this team”, Sheriff Jackson said. 

According to Club Secretary Dr.. Ferrell Miller, Jackson also stated that “there are 12 personnel on a special response team having had 40 hours of training in Colorado. This team is part of a regional asset team of local law enforcement, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Kansas Highway Patrol. An armored vehicle which may be used by the team has been ordered and is due to arrive in September. The vehicle will be paid for from asset forfeitures and VIN checks at no cost to the taxpayers.

The Sheriff said that he has also has been working to get the department accredited with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) that focuses on achieving the best outcomes in the delivery of services. That includes consistent internal and external reviews, combined with third-party validation of an agency’s policies and procedures critical in the delivery of high-quality public safety services, and promotes accountability. They believe “what gets measured gets done.” Jackson shared that the Geary County Sheriff’s Department already has policies in place, which will expedite the process in working to get the department accredited.

Konza Prairie Community Health Center has received a limited supply of N95 masks for free public distribution to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.

Konza is partnering with health departments in Geary and Riley Counties to ensure distribution of these free N95 masks to patients and vulnerable members of the community. Every person is allowed up to three free masks, while supplies last. 

Masks are available for patients at Konza clinics in Junction City and Manhattan. They are also available for pick-up at the Geary County Health Department, 1212 W Ash, Junction City on Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am – Noon and 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and on&nbsp;Friday, 8:00 am – Noon and 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. In Manhattan they can also be obtained at the&nbsp;KDHE Riley County COVID-19 Testing Site, 3015 Anderson Ave, Manhattan on&nbsp;Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 11a.m. Thursday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Mazda 6 driven by&nbsp;&nbsp;Owen, Carol Sue Owen, Beatrice, Nebraska, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Vera Road.

The car left the right side of the road. entered the north ditch, struck an embankment and came to rest in the creek.

Geary Community Hospital welcomes a new doctor

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Riley County man on numerous charges after an arrest&nbsp;

Just after 8p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 11,900 block of Crooked Creek Rd. near Leonardville, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 50-year-old man reported a 23-year-old male suspect later identified as 23-year-old Brandon Welty of Riley, stole multiple guns, credit cards, bow and arrows, keys, liquor and $200 cash. 

Junction City Police arrested Welty and he was booked into the Geary County Jail early Thursday on requested charges of possession of stolen property; value less than $1,500, possession of stolen property; Firearm with value less than $25,000, transporting an open container, criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of stimulant, interference with law enforcement,&nbsp;Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body and&nbsp;Traffic contraband in corr/care facility; Intro item on grounds, according to online jail records.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran focused on the Russia - Ukraine situation as he opened his comments at a Military Affairs Council breakfast in Junction City Thursday morning. "I want to make certain that we condemn Vladimir Putin and Russia for their intrusion into Ukraine."

Referring to the action by Russia, Moran stated that there is nothing noble and there is no justification, "and it's the greatest provocation for one country invading another, certainly in Europe, since World War II. "

Moran called for America to be united in support of the nation, the administration and the U.S. military. "While there may be those that try to divide us at this time, America does its best when we work together. Do not let us make a mistake to be divided." The senator spoke at the Geary County Convention Center.

The campus's admissions department staff knocked on the doors of incoming first-year students for the fall 2022 semester, making more than 30 stops around the state of Kansas, spanning more than 16 hours and 450 miles traveled as part of the event. Scholarship Patrol is organized by the admissions department at K-State Salina. The patrol travels to future students' homes and surprises them with scholarships. Kris Grinter, director of admissions at K-State Salina, said the time spent preparing for the event and the long travel are worth it to see the students' excitement. "This is my favorite time of year," Grinter said. "We work with the parents or guardians of students to let them know we are coming. Often, the students' grandparents or other extended family are there to see the moment and celebrate when they receive a scholarship. We've even seen neighbors come over to congratulate the student." While the admissions department congratulates the students within driving distance, they still have a special surprise for the students who live farther away. As part of Scholarship Patrol, K-State Salina also sends out decorated K-State-themed boxes to out-of-state students receiving a scholarship. In 2022, the campus has sent out 283 packages to students from 29 different states to help with funding their education. Christopher Smith, executive director of enrollment management and new student engagement, says this annual event showcases the campus's efforts in making a college education more accessible to a diverse population for the state of Kansas — and beyond. "The Scholarship Patrol is an exciting way we showcase how thrilled we are to welcome new students to our campus," Smith said. "This further demonstrates how our unique personalized approach, placing the student's wants and needs first, allows us to build better relationships with students and help them understand they are making the right choice on where to go to get their education." Scholarship Patrol is made possible by donors who support K-State Salina and Kansas State University as a whole. Kathy Tremont has been selected to serve as the new chair for the Geary County Republican Central Committee. Tremont recently retired from the Geary County Treasurer position.

Rick Roberts will serve as the Central Committee vice-chair and Corrine Fehr will continue as secretary-treasurer.&nbsp;

The Republican Central Committee supports and advocates for all Republican candidates running&nbsp; for office. There primary objective is finding excellent candidates to serve in those offices.

The committee meets on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. and a location for the meetings will be announced in the near future.

Work on a new Geary Courthouse Security Building is scheduled to begin the first week of March. County Public Works released information saying the facility will be approximately 740 square feet in size and will be located directly west of the existing Courthouse.&nbsp;

As part of the project, deteriorated concrete landings and steps along with sidewalks leading up to the Courthouse will be replaced. Interior renovation repairs to the east and west entries of the building will also be included.

Architect Brett Deam was retained to design the new building and project scope. On Dec. 20, 2021 Geary County Commissioners accepted a bid from Cheney Construction for a contract cost of $728,951. American Recovery Program Act and Public Building Commission funds will be used to pay for the project.
