You can purchase tickets for the Junction City Rodeo that is scheduled July 15 - 16 at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena, 1025 S. Spring Valley Road. Advanced tickets can be purchased at Orschlens in Junction City for $4 for children ages 6 - 12 and $9 for adults.

Tickets at the gate during the rodeo will be $5 for children 6-12 and $10 for adults. Children under 5 will be admitted free.&nbsp;

The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. both nights and there will be a Special Needs Rodeo from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, the 16th. The Queen Coronation will be held on the 16th following the Saddle Bronc competition.&nbsp;

"The storms as I expected and predicted would happen this year are knocking more limbs than normal out." More tree limbs are being knocked down this year

Susan Jagerson, Director and Grant Coordinator of Live Well Geary County and Kalli Brownlee, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Director, and Farmer’s Marker Manager, were guest speakers at the weekly JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting in Junction City.

Jagerson shared that “Live Well Geary County (LWGC) is developing dynamic, community-based strategies to improve the health of residents. LWGC was founded in response to a call for county-wide coordinated action among health and wellness stakeholders. Together we work to close the gaps in services and resources so there are healthy choices where residents live, learn, work and play.”

Jagerson also shared some statistics about Geary County. “Geary County is one of the least healthy counties in Kansas but is making improvements. Twenty-four years is the average age of the population in the county; there is 11.7% poverty; 34.5% are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); there is a 39% obesity rate and there is limited access to grocery stores where quality/healthy foods may be purchased.”

The LWGC Food Policy Council received a Pathways implementation grant to engage New Venture Advisors in developing a Food System Plan for the county. The 10-year plan provides a comprehensive approach to food system efforts – identifying policy solutions that influence how food is produced and consumed.

LWGC has partnered with the 12th Street Community Center, Delivering Change, the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, I.C.A.R.E, the City of Junction City, Geary County, faith-based organizations and others. “An example of one of those partnerships include the 12th St. Community Garden managed by Vicky Bobbitt and the I.C.A.R.E. organization, which also works with Jobs For America’s Graduates (JAG) and the Bicentennial Manor. For $350 the public can Adopt A Bed in the 12th St. Community Vegetable Garden, which can be maintained by the adoptee or a designee”, Jagerson said.

Jagerson also told the Optimists that “85-100 meals are served to seniors on Mondays at the Larry Dixon Center on West Sixth Street. The meals may be as a dine-in, carry-out or delivered.”

Kalli Brownlee stated that “the Farmer’s Market is held every Thursday from 4-7:00 PM in the JC Naz parking lot on South Washington Street. Vendors set up to sell healthy foods and vegetables. The SNAP program is in place for those who are eligible.” Kalli and others have recipes available and recommendations on how to cook with and use the fresh fruits and vegetables, so the items are used in a timely and healthy manner.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Cadillac Deville driven by , Delores Elizabeth Sauvage, 58, Onaga, was northbound on K63 Highway just south of 286th Road.

The care left the roadway to the east, struck a field entrance,&nbsp; became airborne for some distance and came to rest on its front. EMS transported Sauvage to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kan. woman hospitalized after car goes airborne before crash

John Summers, Ed Berney and the late Bill Deppish are credited with being&nbsp; founders of Sundown Salute.

This week, Michelle Stimatze, who chairs the planning committee said Summers will be in attendance for the celebration. He, along with other members of his family and the Bill Deppish family, will be recognized as grand marshals for the Sundown Salute parade that is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Monday in Junction City. "We decided to put them as grand marshals because without them starting this we may not have ever had this event.

This will be the 50th annual Sundown Salute. This year it will be held in Milford but three events will occur in Junction City including the parade, Freedom Run and Veterans Ceremony.

Setup for Sundown Salute occurred on Wednesday in Milford.

The concert stage was put in place on the ballfield area.&nbsp;

Concerts begin Thursday night with performances by Goddesses of Rock from 8 - 9:30 p.m. and The Hype from 10 -11:30 p.m.

Sundown Salute continues Friday through Monday.

Junction City Community Band established a scholarship fund in 1998 in memory of Jack Moore, a percussionist and former member of the band. The scholarship pays most of the cost of sending student members of the band to a summer band camp.&nbsp;

This year they have announced two scholarship recipients: Mariah Wyche, tenor saxophone, Junction City and Favian Gomez, trumpet, Manhattan. They will be attending the High Plains Music Camp at Fort Hays State University in July.

Over the years the community band has awarded scholarships to 28 students.

Hunting enthusiasts can enjoy Acorns Wild, a 1,000 acre tract located about five miles southwest of Junction City. Owner Mike Harris said the property is basically an extension of Acorns Resort, which is at Milford Lake.

The Acorns Wild property was acquired a little over a year ago. "We've been working on developing some activities so that guests that come to the resort can also come down here and enjoy some of the activities, "said Harris.

The property is a controlled shooting area that includes habitat for upland game birds such as pheasants, quail and chukar. "We buy the birds from a vendor and set them out there. Then people come through." There is an extended hunting season that begins Oct. 1. Guides and dogs will be provided or you can use your own dogs.

The site opened Oct. 1, 2021 and just in year one there were several hundred guests.&nbsp;To make a reservation call the Acorns Resort office at 785-463-4000, ext. 1.&nbsp;

Creation of Acorns Wild is intended to help attract hunters as one way to get people to visit the Flint Hills and stay in Geary County.

Elk are also being raised at Acorns Wild. "Eventually once we get the herd numbers up to where we need them to be we will be doing farm to table," said Harris. Elk will be raised at Acorns Wild, served in the Cove restaurant at the resort and then eventually via retail sales at the resort office.

Harris noted that right now they have a lot of calves at Acorns Wild adding that it's calving season. "So are a little over half way done with calving."

Meanwhile at Acorns Resort, repairs are progressing following the Milford Lake high water year of 2019. This is the busy summer recreation season at the resort.

Manhattan Hy-Vee is now offering a new food option in their store, opening the fourth Wahlburgers location in Kansas on Tuesday.

Wahlburgers is the creation of Paul Wahlberg, brother of singer, Donnie Wahlberg and actor, Mark Wahlberg.

Menu items include mouth-watering burgers, sandwiches, salads and appetizers.

Ordering can be done at the Order and Pay Station or when seated at the bar inside the dining area.

"We're just hoping we can live up to the expectation." Hy-Vee Manhattan, store manager, Steve Rich says.

There is a new elementary school being built on Fort Riley at 4720 Leonard Ave. USD 475 Board of Education member Jim Schmidt provided information during a board meeting Tuesday at the Devin Center.&nbsp; "We have started vertical construction out at Fort Riley on the new elementary school. " Schmidt added the precast walls are going up. "Exciting given the amount of rain we've had out there."

The new 81,000 square foot elementary school will have the capacity for 390 students. It is being built on a piece of land where the former Jefferson Elementary School was previously located.

COVID vaccines are still available as a walk-in basis for Moderna in AlphaCare and by appointment for Pfizer, 785-238-0305. 

At this time GCH does not have the Moderna pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for patients under 5 years old. Once it arrives they will alert the public.&nbsp;

USD 475 releases the school year calendar

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A group of 4-H members from Kansas and Ohio recently got together through an interstate exchange program to discover similarities and differences between programs in their two states.&nbsp;

Ten 4-H members aged 11 to 18 travelled from Van Wert, Ohio and were paired with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;members from Riley, Pottawatomie and Clay counties. The youth were strategically matched so they would be staying with someone of a similar age and interests. &nbsp;

“It’s a great experience for the kids to make connections with other youth and learn about a different state,” said Cherie Trieb, the Kansas 4-H exchange program coordinator.&nbsp;

During their week-long stay, the members traveled to the State Capitol building in Topeka, Fort Riley military base, and the Strataca salt mines in Hutchinson, among other stops. When the group didn’t have plans, Kansas host families were free to take their exchange delegate to see other sights in the area. &nbsp;

“It was fun visiting the waterfalls and seeing those,” said Katie Gamble, one of the Ohio delegates, referring to the Geary Lake waterfalls.&nbsp;

Gamble also noticed differences between agricultural operations in Kansas and Ohio. “There were a lot of cattle farms and grass (in Kansas) whereas we have more farmland,” she said.&nbsp;

Beyond sightseeing and visiting parts of the Kansas agricultural industry, Trieb said another purpose of the exchange is to share ideas between the two states’ 4-H programs. &nbsp;

“One unique thing that 4-Hers in Kansas are doing is they have groups that kids from different counties can join, so that there are more people to (interact) with,” Gamble said.&nbsp;

Chayla Maichel, who was Gamble’s Kansas host, had similar insights about the two exchange programs.&nbsp;

“The Ohio group was a (local) 4-H club, unlike ours that pulls members from different clubs in three counties,” she said, “When they host (exchange trips in Ohio), they always get together in the evening whether or not they did an activity during the day. They believe that helps the visiting 4-Hers adjust and allows all of them to interact and form friendships.”&nbsp;

Learning aside, Maichel noted that the real treasure at the end of the trip is the connections youth have made with each other.&nbsp;

“Hosting someone in your home that you have never met before and forming a friendship is such a valuable experience.” Maichel said.&nbsp;

To complete the exchange, the Kansas 4-H members are planning to travel to Ohio in the summer of 2023. The goal is for most of the youth to be paired with the same delegates they hosted this summer.&nbsp;

By Annika Wiebers, K-State Research and Extension news service&nbsp;MANHATTAN, Kan. – A group of 4-H members from Kansas and Ohio recently got together through an interstate exchange program to discover similarities and differences between programs in their two states.&nbsp;Ten 4-H members aged 11 to 18 travelled from Van Wert, Ohio and were paired with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;members from Riley, Pottawatomie and Clay counties. The youth were strategically matched so they would be staying with someone of a similar age and interests. &nbsp;“It’s a great experience for the kids to make connections with other youth and learn about a different state,” said Cherie Trieb, the Kansas 4-H exchange program coordinator.&nbsp;During their week-long stay, the members traveled to the State Capitol building in Topeka, Fort Riley military base, and the Strataca salt mines in Hutchinson, among other stops. When the group didn’t have plans, Kansas host families were free to take their exchange delegate to see other sights in the area. &nbsp;“It was fun visiting the waterfalls and seeing those,” said Katie Gamble, one of the Ohio delegates, referring to the Geary Lake waterfalls.&nbsp;Gamble also noticed differences between agricultural operations in Kansas and Ohio. “There were a lot of cattle farms and grass (in Kansas) whereas we have more farmland,” she said.&nbsp;Beyond sightseeing and visiting parts of the Kansas agricultural industry, Trieb said another purpose of the exchange is to share ideas between the two states’ 4-H programs. &nbsp;“One unique thing that 4-Hers in Kansas are doing is they have groups that kids from different counties can join, so that there are more people to (interact) with,” Gamble said.&nbsp;Chayla Maichel, who was Gamble’s Kansas host, had similar insights about the two exchange programs.&nbsp;“The Ohio group was a (local) 4-H club, unlike ours that pulls members from different clubs in three counties,” she said, “When they host (exchange trips in Ohio), they always get together in the evening whether or not they did an activity during the day. They believe that helps the visiting 4-Hers adjust and allows all of them to interact and form friendships.”&nbsp;Learning aside, Maichel noted that the real treasure at the end of the trip is the connections youth have made with each other.&nbsp;“Hosting someone in your home that you have never met before and forming a friendship is such a valuable experience.” Maichel said.&nbsp;To complete the exchange, the Kansas 4-H members are planning to travel to Ohio in the summer of 2023. The goal is for most of the youth to be paired with the same delegates they hosted this summer.&nbsp;

Carnival equipment arrives for Freedom Fest JC

FORT RILEY, Kan. - The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley hosted a Victory With Honors Ceremony at Victory Hall, Fort Riley this past Friday. The ceremony honored the outgoing 1ID Deputy Commanding General-Support, Brig. Gen. Geoffrey A. Norman, and welcomed the division's first female Deputy Commanding General-Support, Brig. Gen. Niave F. Knell. Norman is a native of Boulder, Colorado, and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1994. Norman's staff assignments include Battalion S-4, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas, as well as the Squadron S-1, 4th Squadron, and the 7th Cavalry at Camp Garryowen, Republic of Korea. Knell is from Milford, Massachusetts. She was commissioned in 1992 at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Knell also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Comparative Politics, a Master of Science degree in Business and Organizational Security Management from Webster University, a Master of Advanced Military Studies degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from National War College. "I'm honored to serve in this position, I really thank [Maj.] Gen. Meyer, Command Sgt. Maj. Mullinax, and the rest of the command team for having such an amazing vision for Fort Riley, and I am proud to serve that mission," said Knell. Knell previously served as Commandant, United States Military Police School, United States Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Along with being the first female DCG in the history of 1ID, she is also the first officer of the military police branch to serve as a DCG in a U.S. Army division.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Michael "Mick" Wunder loved serving&nbsp; the Junction City community. Those were words by Pastor Brian Smith during the funeral service for Wunder at the JC Naz Church.&nbsp;

There was a large audience in attendance who were were reminded about Mick's passion to make the community better and how he took intense pride in it. There was a special passion for first responders as he supported both the police and fire departments.

Wunder, a four-time Junction City mayor, loved the sports community and served for many years as a basketball referee. As noted by his former officiating partner Brian Smith they "did it for the kids."

Wunder's most important community was his family, his wife Barb and two daughters, Kara and Katlyn!

Among the speakers were his wife Barb Wunder, who thanked those in attendance for being there to celebrate Mick..&nbsp; "He would be so humbled if he knew how much he was loved and his life impacted others." She noted that she respected him for "his honesty, loyalty and compassion."

Wunder, 65, passed away Saturday June 18 at his home.

Fireworks&nbsp; that are legal to be sold within the City of Junction City may be discharged on private property from June 27th ( Monday ) through July 5th ( Tuesday ).

Discharge of permitted fireworks is allowed from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday except on July 4th. Friday, Saturday and on July 4th ( Monday ) discharge is permitted from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Fireworks may not be discharged on public streets, in parks, other public property or where prohibited by posted signs. Fireworks may not be discharged any place within 300 feet of Heritage Park in any direction during the time of the Freedom Fest JC celebration.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects involved in a violent altercation in Riley County.

Just after 5p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated kidnapping, battery, and driving while suspended in the 100 block of Riley Ave. in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 38-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man as both the victims and suspects reported the woman entered the man's truck and he then drove off while hitting her. 

It was reported she then pulled the keys from the ignition, and got out, a fight ensued between them and he he drove off from the scene after two bystanders stopped. 

The man was later found driving east on K-18 and stopped by officers near the intersection of S. Seth Child Rd. and Southwind Road. 

Both the man and woman were seen by EMS for their injuries but were not transported.

Handbell Musicians of America Area 8 held their Biennial Festival and Conference at the Hilton Kansas City Airport Hotel in Kansas City,  Missouri. June 23-25.

States included: Illinois, Iowa,  Kansas,  Missouri and Nebraska. The theme of the conference was,  "Kansas City Here I come!

The conference included classes, rehearsals and performances,  ending with a concert featuring  different groups and a Mass performance by all 170 Ringers.

The Glory Ringers Bell Ensemble are members of First Presbyterian Church of Junction City.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Harvest is a farmer’s Super Bowl. It’s the culmination of a year’s work and his way to measure success. After the last load of wheat heads to town, there is a final buzz of activity. Equipment is cleaned and put away, paperwork sorted and other things neglected during harvest are checked on. The stress of constant activity, anticipation and worry, ebbs and there is room to breathe; a moment of thankfulness and rest. That brief rest is a special time for a farm family. Though a farmer’s work is never done, a fresh sense of accomplishment reminds a farmer that even God rested occasionally. The win of harvest gives farm families a small window for a holiday. Marc and I love both love to plan trips and travel to fun destinations, but he often struggles to commit to plans far enough in advance to book tickets or make firm commitments with friends. He can’t predict the weather, if irrigators will break down, when crops will be ready to harvest, if cattle fences will need unexpected mending, a storm causing damage or all the other unpredicted but steady tasks that keep farmers busy 365 days a year. But when the stars align, a brief vacation is in order. We love to grab a road map and snacks and jump in the car for a day of exploring the hidden gems of our neighboring towns in Kansas. Some people may read this and think I mean Wichita, Kansas City or one of our larger cities. Though these cities have some wonderful attractions, they are rarely the focus of our Kansas adventures. A little over a decade ago when I first moved here, the Kansas Sampler Foundation had just completed their “8 Wonders of Kansas” publications. That list joined personal recommendations from friends and our paper atlas to create ready inspiration for any of a dozen day trips we have ready for moments when the opportunity arises for us to travel this beautiful and unique state. If you have never seen the “8 Wonders of Kansas” or taken a day trip to the small towns who have pulled together resources to create museums, preserved history, share local art, or supported unique customs and businesses, you are missing out. Another joy of these day trips is that very little planning allows us to be flexible and see where the road leads us. This year our postharvest adventure started with my dad’s (a farmer who sees helping during wheat harvest as his annual vacation) interest in the Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette. Lunch at the Ranch House, an extensive and well maintained motorcycle collection and a very trendy and cool Smoky Hill Distillery awaited us on Main Street in Marquette. Next we decided to travel to neighboring Lindsborg for the view from Coronado Heights, the Old Mill Museum and the Dala Horse artists at Hemslojd. We meandered home through Lyons for a tasty dinner at the County Seat. Our day in towns with less than 4,000 people included rare items, interesting culture and history, great food and drink, and wonderful family memories. Small town Kansas may not be on the top of your vacation bucket list, but it is full of interesting people who freely share their passion with the people who step into their towns every day. That is what make traveling through our state so amazing. The next time you have a moment to pause for an adventure, I hope you will get out and see what the small towns around our state have to offer. Maybe I will see you there.

The Joy of Farm Family Day Trips

In the Junction City Manager's weekly 515 report the Public Works notes included amounts on recent tree removals from around the city. There were a total of 93.5 cubic yards of tree debris removed.

The largest amounts of tree debris removed included 54 cubic yards at 529 W.14th and 20 cubic yards at 502 Maples.
