Assistant Director Stacey Kyle said Monday that the Geary County Senior Center will reopen Tuesday for in-house dining. The center has been closed to the public for in-house dining since last Thursday but has been delivering home-bound meals.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran made his first visit to the new Junction City High School on Monday. He had an opportunity to not only tour the facility but also to visit with students. "The general impressions are wow! This is an amazing school building." The senator added it provides a lot of assets for educators to teach students in Geary USD 475.

Moran recognized the role that federal impact aid played in helping fund construction of&nbsp; the school because of&nbsp; the nearby Fort Riley military presence. He talked with about a half dozen students, and observed that he was impressed with their plans and thoughts. "Mostly their experiences here in school, how beneficial this educational system is to them. I will return to Washington D.C. with the belief that something as we know good is happening in Kansas, perhaps something great is happening in Kansas with how we're educating our kids."

Moran said the size of the building was amazing to him.&nbsp;

The senator added that the wow for him comes from the use of the school building to convince the Army and Department of Defense that the community is committed to the care and well being of military families. "That matters certainly because they are deserving of that love, care and education, but it also helps us in making the case that when a decision is made about where a unit or brigade is going to locate we will now, particularly now that I've seen it in person, be able to make the case that you ought to understand that the folks at Fort Riley and surrounding community , Junction City, have the well being of Soldiers and their families at heart." Moran added that was demonstrated in the decisions about educating the students.

This marked Moran's first visit to the JCHS site since the groundbreaking for the new school.

The recent winter blasts that have netted a few snow days for the kids are no longer acceptable for my children. They are ready for an extended, week-long break from school. And in their eyes, it can’t get here soon enough! &nbsp; They ask me daily how many more days until their beloved break begins. They have been constantly discussing in detail the grand plans they have for their week-long hiatus from all school responsibilities. My daughter is already planning out her wardrobe of sundresses, sandals and swimsuits, while my son is brainstorming plans for an adventure course he plans to build in our pasture.&nbsp; &nbsp; We have less than a month until my two can experience the “freedom” that they have been dreaming of daily, and there is no denying that their anticipation is showing loud and clear. &nbsp; When I asked my third-grader why he’s so adamant about aggressively marking each day off the giant calendar that hangs in our mudroom, his response surprised me. &nbsp; “Mom, the closer we get to spring break means the closer we are to summer break,” he told me. &nbsp; “And once it’s Summer Break, I can spend all of my time on the farm,” he added. &nbsp; I immediately made a mental note to increase the amount of chores for my boy this summer to ensure he will look forward to returning to school in the fall. &nbsp; For me, our children’s spring break is the final visible block on our family’s calendar of calmness prior to the start of an incredibly busy season on our farm. &nbsp; Aside from the expected spring sports practices and games that will begin occupying time slots during my evenings and weekends following spring break, the overall pace within our household will dramatically shift as well. &nbsp; Our winter evenings together at the dinner table will transition to meals hurriedly prepared and delivered out to fields while we plant our crops for next fall’s harvest. &nbsp; I’ll increase my audiobook consumption while navigating the dirt roads to deliver seed and equipment while the kids attend their final months of school. &nbsp; My visits to the local tractor dealership will become more frequent as I anticipate making many trips into town for parts as well. &nbsp; Secretly, I hope it takes a while for spring break to arrive this year. I want to soak up the calmness of the current season that we’re in. Unfortunately, I think I’m outnumbered in our house, and these next few weeks will quickly pass and usher in another season on the farm.

Manhattan Tech hosting Red Cross blood drive this week

MANHATTAN - Photographs by the iconic Gordon Parks and rising star Doug Barrett are a part of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art's 25th anniversary celebration.

The exhibitions, Gordon Parks: Homeward to the Prairie I Come and Doug Barrett: Find Your Voice, are scheduled through May 28. The Parks exhibition, in the Marion Pelton Gallery, features photographs from a gift that Parks gave to K-State in 1973 and those made during visits to Manhattan in the 1980s, according to information from the museum. The Barrett exhibition, in the Archie and Dorothy Hyle Family Gallery, offers a glimpse of work by the "Manhattan-based photographer who makes compelling visual stories about people with whom he made personal connections, such as homeless veterans around the country and residents of Manhattan’s historic African American neighborhood," the museum noted in a news release.

"The exhibition also exemplifies Parks' influence on Barrett and other contemporary artists," the museum added.

The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, 701 Beach Lane, is located on the southeast corner of the Kansas State University campus. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Free parking is available adjacent to the building.

In addition to in-person viewing, both exhibitions are also offered virtually and have a 3D touring option. The exhibitions also can be viewed at <a href="http://beach.k-state.edu/explore">beach.k-state.edu/explore</a>.

The Beach Museum also plans to offer free public programs that "offer ways to learn more about these photographers and why their work is relevant." Those programs are as follows.

This free livesteam presentation is a gallery conversation with Richardson, a photographer for National Geographic magazine from Lindsborg. Scott, Academy Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker Kevin Willmott and six-time Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard. Each has a vision for how the arts can function as a tool for making our society more just and equitable.&nbsp; Presence of Absence: Gordon Parks Through an Empathic Lens, at 7:30 p.m. CDT April 7, features Blanchard and the E-Collective in concert, with staging by K-State students under the direction of Scott and Mathew Gaynor. Since last fall, Scott has been working with a group of K-State students, under the direction of Gaynor, head of the K-State art department, on a unique digital stage set for the performance. Both events are free, but tickets are required for the April 7 concert and can be obtained at McCain Auditorium beginning March 23 at the McCain Ticket Office, which is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Gordon Parks, Doug Barrett photographs featured in Beach Museum exhibition

On&nbsp; this President's Day the late president, Dwight D. Eisenhower is remembered.

What a coincidence that the 34th President, Dwight David Eisenhower was from the 34th state, Kansas? Eisenhower lived a full life that was in service to the United States. He was a West Point graduate, General in the Army, the first Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, President of Columbia University, Army Chief of Staff, NATO Supreme Commander, and President of the United States.

President Eisenhower was born on Oct. 14, 1890. He was the third of seven sons of David Eisenhower and his wife, Ida. He grew up loving sports in Abilene, Kansas. The Eisenhower’s’ lived in Abilene because his father worked at the Belle Springs Creamery. Eisenhower would eventually come to work with his father at the creamery from 1909 to 1911.

When he was 20 years old, Eisenhower heard about a competitive exam for the armed forces. The Naval Academy was his first choice. Before he took the exam, he discovered that he was too old to enter the academy. Because of this, Eisenhower entered West Point in 1911 and graduated in June 1915.

At the beginning of his military career, Eisenhower was stationed in Georgia and Texas. Texas is where he met the love of his life and wife, Mamie Doud. It was love at first sight and Eisenhower proposed to her on Valentine’s Day, in 1916. The couple would go on to have two sons, Doud Dwight Eisenhower, and John Eisenhower. Doud died of scarlet fever at the age of three. John served in the Army, became an author, and served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium.

While Eisenhower was in the military, he served in the Panama Canal and Philippines in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1940’s he served in England during World War II. There he directed the Allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. In 1943, President Roosevelt gave him the title of Supreme Allied Commander of Europe. In this capacity, he oversaw the planning and execution of the Normandy Invasion.

Eisenhower’s presidential journey began in 1953 when he accepted the Republican Party presidential nomination. His slogan, “I Like Ike” was a catchy one and he would serve as president for two terms.

During his presidency, he authorized the Interstate Highway System, St. Lawrence Seaway the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Eisenhower negotiated the truce to end the conflict in Korea, dealt with crises in Lebanon, Suez, Berlin, and Hungary. He was the first president to appear on color television, the last president born in the 19th century, and is the only general who has served as president during the 20th century.

Eisenhower’s life should not be defined by his military career. He was a husband, a father and incredibly involved with his hobbies. Eisenhower was a skilled oil painter and painted about 260 paintings in 20 years. He also loved flying &amp; fast cars.

He was also very skilled at card games. When he was playing bridge regularly with President Manuel Quezon in the Philippines, he earned the nickname, “Bridge Wizard of Manila” because he was that good.

Kansas is so lucky to have a President who made it his life mission to make the country better.

Eisenhower is remembered.What a coincidence that the 34th President, Dwight David Eisenhower was from the 34th state, Kansas? Eisenhower lived a full life that was in service to the United States. He was a West Point graduate, General in the Army, the first Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, President of Columbia University, Army Chief of Staff, NATO Supreme Commander, and President of the United States.President Eisenhower was born on Oct. 14, 1890. He was the third of seven sons of David Eisenhower and his wife, Ida. He grew up loving sports in Abilene, Kansas. The Eisenhower’s’ lived in Abilene because his father worked at the Belle Springs Creamery. Eisenhower would eventually come to work with his father at the creamery from 1909 to 1911.When he was 20 years old, Eisenhower heard about a competitive exam for the armed forces. The Naval Academy was his first choice. Before he took the exam, he discovered that he was too old to enter the academy. Because of this, Eisenhower entered West Point in 1911 and graduated in June 1915.At the beginning of his military career, Eisenhower was stationed in Georgia and Texas. Texas is where he met the love of his life and wife, Mamie Doud. It was love at first sight and Eisenhower proposed to her on Valentine’s Day, in 1916. The couple would go on to have two sons, Doud Dwight Eisenhower, and John Eisenhower. Doud died of scarlet fever at the age of three. John served in the Army, became an author, and served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium.While Eisenhower was in the military, he served in the Panama Canal and Philippines in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1940’s he served in England during World War II. There he directed the Allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. In 1943, President Roosevelt gave him the title of Supreme Allied Commander of Europe. In this capacity, he oversaw the planning and execution of the Normandy Invasion.Eisenhower’s presidential journey began in 1953 when he accepted the Republican Party presidential nomination. His slogan, “I Like Ike” was a catchy one and he would serve as president for two terms.During his presidency, he authorized the Interstate Highway System, St. Lawrence Seaway the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Eisenhower negotiated the truce to end the conflict in Korea, dealt with crises in Lebanon, Suez, Berlin, and Hungary. He was the first president to appear on color television, the last president born in the 19th century, and is the only general who has served as president during the 20th century.Eisenhower’s life should not be defined by his military career. He was a husband, a father and incredibly involved with his hobbies. Eisenhower was a skilled oil painter and painted about 260 paintings in 20 years. He also loved flying &amp; fast cars.He was also very skilled at card games. Twelve year old Adrian Williams&nbsp; provided facts on Leggo's. He said it's an activity where "you use a lot of your own creativity mindset."

Williams noted that he is building a Jurassic Park World Tour set. " I have built a bat shuttle that had over 20,000 pieces. I had a four-foot tall rocket ship that I built. " He received a top purple award for his project talk.

Eleven year old Eliot Oentrich talked about getting started with a bucket calf, which will be her 4-H project for the fair. "You have to get a nursing bottle, some milk replacer, you have to get native prairie hay and calf starter feed."

Oentrich noted that she really likes bucket calves.

RILEY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Sunday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Toyota Sienna driven by Samantha D. Keene, 32, Olsburg, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Kansas 13. The driver failed to yield the right of way, traveled&nbsp; into the intersection.

Two westbound motorcycles, a 2018 Suzuki driven by Michael V.&nbsp;Antoniato, 30, Riley, and a 2014 Kawasaki driven by Elizabeth N.&nbsp;Cook-Antoniato, 31, Riley, struck the Toyota.

EMS transported Antoniato and&nbsp;Cook-Antoniato to Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment.&nbsp; Keene was not injured and properly restrained at the time of the accident.&nbsp;&nbsp;Antoniato and Cook-Antoniato were not wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

Geary County CVB staffers are on the travel show circuit right now to inform the public about the attractions in this area.

&nbsp;The first stop this past weekend was a travel and adventure show in Chicago where there were participants from both the United States and other countries. Director Donna Price said the CVB had a 10-20 foot booth. " We get a lot of folks from all over the Chicago area as well as other areas that just want to learn about America."

There were photos on the booth featuring Junction City and Fort Riley, the Flint Hills region and some animals. There were interviews with media in Chicago including travel writers as well. Price confirmed that Milford Lake and the Flint Hills vistas drew attention for those media members.

Next stop for the CVB crew will be an Omaha sports and travel show this week.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of sex crimes over several years arrested 44-year-old Joshua Penabaz of Manhattan on Friday afternoon, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Joshua Penabaz had worked as a school nurse with USD 383. On Sunday RCPD reported "this arrest is not associated with any of his previous employment."

Penabaz is currently being held at the Riley County Jail on a bond of $1 million on requested charges for rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and aggravated criminal sodomy.

MANHATTAN — In an effort to help support growth in agriculture, the Kansas Department of Agriculture is calling on industry partners to help identify workforce needs among agricultural employers in the state by conducting the second Kansas Agriculture Workforce Needs Assessment Survey. 

The survey will help KDA better understand current workforce issues, trends and needs within the Kansas agriculture industry to steer future discussions and identify solutions for positive changes for our state’s leading economic driver — agriculture.

Kansas farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses, manufacturers and producers of agricultural products are all being asked to complete the survey to help KDA identify the number and types of jobs in the state’s agriculture industry, and the specific skills required for those jobs.&nbsp;A similar survey was conducted in 2015 with results released in 2016.

“We continue to hear from our stakeholders that workforce is their number one issue,” said Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “KDA has partnered with several agriculture sectors to begin to mitigate the issue, but we know more needs to be done. This survey will help us better understand the employment needs of all employers in agriculture and help promote long-term workforce solutions for Kansas agriculture.”&nbsp;

KDA seeks input using agriculture workforce needs assessment survey

WASHINGTON, D.C. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann was part of a bi-partisian group to introduce resolution designating Feb. 19-26 as National FFA Week. Nearly 90 co-sponsors joined the effort in the U.S. House of Representatives and it was also introduced in the U.S. Senate.&nbsp;

In addition to designating National FFA Week, the resolution also recognizes the important role of the National FFA Organization in developing the next generation of leaders who will change the world and celebrates 70 years of the National FFA Organization’s membership magazine, now called New Horizons.

“The future is making strong demands,” Mann said. “By the year 2030, the global population is expected to surpass eight billion people. Now more than ever, we need young people with the foresight, creativity, and skills necessary to meet the challenges of delivering food, fiber, and fuel to the world. The National FFA Organization, state FFA associations, and local FFA chapters across the country give students the tools and resources they need to tackle those problems head-on. As a past chapter FFA officer from Quinter, Kansas, proud FFA alumnus, and founder of the Congressional FFA Caucus, I am honored to introduce this resolution to celebrate National FFA Week.”

Rep. Mann helped launch the Congressional FFA Caucus in December of 2021. The organization serves to raise the profile of school-based agricultural education and FFA, and to develop relationships between Congress and the next generation of leaders in food and agriculture. There are currently 38 members of the U.S. House of Representatives in the Congressional FFA Caucus.

Kansas First District Rep. part of resolution supporting FFA

Quilts centering around Black History Month were displayed by local quilt maker Montika Allen-Atkinson Saturday during STEAM activities at the Geary County Historical Museum. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

Quilts dealt with subjects ranging from the Underground Railroad and a former prominent Kansas resident Gordon Parks to Shirley Chisholm. "I talked about where she and Bob Dole passed a bill pushing food stamps through to feed the hungry."

Allen-Atkinson used African wax fabrics to make the quilts. "They're very bright and they're very prominent colors that are depicting the attire of clothing that Africans wear.

&nbsp;Allen-Atkinson makes the quilts at her home where she had a studio built on.

STEAM Saturday also celebrated African American Inventors and visitors got the chance to engineer some of their own inventions. One of those inventions was the ice cream scoop with the pusher known as a trigger, that was developed by Alfred Cralle.

Historical Society Board of Directors President Florence Whitebread helped at the table where that invention by Cralle, and information about ice cream innovator Augustus Jackson were were displayed.

Heather Hagedorn, Historical Society Executive Director, stated that STEAM Saturday events will be held the third Saturday of every month. "It's a new series. It's all hands on, using your engineering skills, using well, STEAM, science, technology, engineering, art and math to try and create a link between history and the things that we do today."

Geary County 4-H Club Day results are announced

MANHATTAN —Following a national search, Benjamin Wolfe will become the next CEO and dean of&nbsp;<a href="https://olathe.k-state.edu/">Kansas State University Olathe</a>. Wolfe currently serves as associate dean of the School of Professional Studies at the University of Kansas and of the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, according to a media release from KSU. Wolfe's appointment was made by Charles Taber, K-State executive vice president and provost. He will start his new position on June 12. "Benjamin Wolfe possesses the knowledge and experience of the academic and workforce development needs of the Kansas City region, which will be key in his new job as CEO and dean of K-State Olathe," Taber said. "He will serve as an advisor to both President Linton and myself on&nbsp;establishing both strategic directions and significant initiatives in research and education in the Kansas City region by the university." Wolfe also will work with university and regional stakeholders to maintain a strategic focus for K-State Olathe consistent with the strategic directions of the university and to build continued excellence and growth in education, research and outreach programs offered through the Olathe campus. As chief administrative officer of the campus, Wolfe will be responsible for overall program leadership, strategic direction, fiscal stewardship, fund development, policy formulation, impact assessment and aligning the efforts and strengths of K-State Olathe with the university's. K-State Olathe, home to the School of Applied and Integrated Studies, has a focus on animal health, and food safety and security, and offers graduate programs with research- and professional-based degrees and certificates. The campus also continues to expand its undergraduate offerings and pathway partnerships with area community colleges. "Building on the great work already taking place at the campus, K-State Olathe is poised to be the workforce&nbsp;development leader in Kansas City," Wolfe said. "I am excited to help align the current and new education and research opportunities of K-State Olathe and the Kansas City metro with the strategic vision of President Linton and Provost Taber." In his current post since July 2020, Wolfe serves on the Edwards Campus leadership team and he collaborates with campus leadership to develop strategic approaches to increase degree offerings and build supportive infrastructure for enrollment strategies and student success for both undergraduate and graduate students. He is responsible for faculty, academic budgeting and finance. Wolfe has led new program development facilitating the launch of over 20 new degree and certificate programs, including a bachelor's in health sciences, professional science master's degree in environmental geology, a master's in applied statistics and data science, and more. He also supervises the KU Leavenworth campus, with responsibilities and oversight of campus instructional activities, and holds a teaching professor appointment in the environmental studies program at KU. Before becoming associate dean, Wolfe served as KU Edwards Campus' director of faculty and administration and as director of academic and faculty support. He also has worked at Metropolitan Community College-Kansas City, where he served as director of the college's Title III grant program and was chair of the natural and social sciences department and was a member of the geology/geography faculty at the college's Blue River Campus in Independence, Missouri. Wolfe is a published researcher in geoscience education and higher education policy and has presented at conferences and workshops nationally on topics, including workforce development, strengthening regional partnerships between higher education institutions and broadening participation in the sciences. He earned a bachelor's degree, with distinction, in geology from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, a master's in geology from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from KU. A peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, Wolfe was named the commission's 2018 Peer Reviewer Rookie of the Year. He is a member and committee chair of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and is a member of the Geological Society of America and Golden Key International Honor Society. He is a recipient of the Missouri Governor’s Award in Teaching Excellence.

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of sex crimes over several years and have a suspect in custody.

On Friday afternoon, police arrested 44-year-old Joshua Penabaz of Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Drive-through testing site on Post will close this week

Board of Directors of the Jellison Benevolent Society, Inc. has presented a check to Aging Well, Inc. in support of their proposed senior living campus project. Donated funds are to be used to construct assisted living and small homes providing skilled nursing on the West side of Junction City.

Arthur Dale Jellison was born in 1876 in Wilson, KS, the son of Asa Adams Jellison and Catherine Ann Stahl Jellison. He graduated from the Kansas Wesleyan Business College in Salina before beginning his banking career as a bookkeeper in the Wilson State Bank. Jellison advanced through various positions before becoming President there in 1908. He later served as the President of the Bank of Holyrood.

In 1914 Jellison bought a controlling interest in Central National Bank from the Sumner Pierce Estate and joined the Central National Bank team and board in Junction City, KS. His wife, Maude Sarah Gifford Jellison, joined him there and they eventually raised twin daughters in the community, Dale Jellison (Weary) and Dorothy Jellison (Cassity).

“We have kept a few newspaper clippings over the years which reinforce the generosity of the Jellison family but also their humility,” said Michael Munson, Central National Bank’s Legal Counsel and board member of the A.D. Jellison Foundation. One such 1965 Junction City Union article shared that when asked to comment on his 50-year banking career, Jellison stated that he would prefer that the event would pass without public notice. The article quoted Jellison as saying, “It would be alright if some of my banking associates might want to say something about it, briefly.”

The Aging Well project has been generously supported by many local businesses, Foundations and private donors, but the board still has some fundraising left to do, Duane Blythe shared, “We are grateful for everyone who has donated to the project, including the Jellison Family Foundation. Recent donations have been impactful and have made us hopeful we can reach our fundraising goal in the near future.

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities arrested a wanted Kansas felon who ran from a traffic stop in June.

On Thursday evening, a Sheriff’s Deputy, aware the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department held an outstanding arrest warrant for 47-year-old Scott Lambert Leister of Chapman, conducted surveillance on his residence, according to Sheriff Jerry Davis.

Shortly before 6:00 p.m. the deputy observed Leister leave the property and travel north on Oat Road in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. As the deputy was attempting to catch up to Leister, Leister fled traveling north on Oat Road to 2700 Avenue. 

Leister turned east onto 2700 Avenue to Paint Road, then traveled south on Paint road to 2600 Avenue and west on 2600 Avenue, turning south onto Oat Road and returned to his residence. 

Leister turned into a field access road at 2710 Oat Road and continued to flee into the pasture east of his residence. The Deputy lost sight of the truck and when he caught up to the truck, Leister had already fled the truck on foot. 

Additional units from the Sheriff’s Department, Chapman Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) responded to the area and established a perimeter to contain Leister on the property.

The Sheriff’s Department K-9 was on scene and two additional K-9 units from the KHP arrived some time later. The Sheriff’s Department requested air assistance from the KHP and a helicopter responded from Topeka. The Sheriff’s Office drone unit was also deployed.

Just before 8:30 p.m. the KHP helicopter located a heat signature on the property behind a residence in the 1700 block of Old-40 Highway. The Sheriff’s Office drone responded to the area and maintained surveillance of the area until officers searching on the ground were able to access the area. 

A KHP K-9 team searched the area and located Leister hiding underneath a cedar tree. K-9 announcements were given but Leister refused to comply, Leister was subsequently bit by the K-9 and taken into custody.

Dickinson County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and examined Leister’s injuries. The Sheriff’s Department transported Leister to Abilene Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries prior to taking him to the Dickinson County Detention Facility.

Leister was arrested on an outstanding Dickinson County bond revocation warrant, on original felony charges including possession of opiates, burglary and criminal possession of a firearm. The bond amount on that warrant is $5,000.00.

Leister had an outstanding Geary County warrant for failure to appear on felony fleeing and eluding and two counts of child endangerment. The bond amount on that warrant is $10,000.00.

Leister had an outstanding Saline County warrant for failure to appear on theft and criminal damage to property charges. There was no bond on that warrant, it was body only.

In addition to the outstanding warrants the Sheriff’s Office is requesting additional charges of attempting to flee and elude and felony obstruction.

Leister has previous convictions that include forgery, burglary, theft, endangering a child, aggravated failure to appear, fleeing or attempt to elude law enforcement and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The Sheriff’s Office drone unit was also deployed.Just before 8:30 p.m. the KHP helicopter located a heat signature on the property behind a residence in the 1700 block of Old-40 Highway. The Sheriff’s Office drone responded to the area and maintained surveillance of the area until officers searching on the ground were able to access the area. A KHP K-9 team searched the area and located Leister hiding underneath a cedar tree. K-9 announcements were given but Leister refused to comply, Leister was subsequently bit by the K-9 and taken into custody.Dickinson County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and examined Leister’s injuries. The Sheriff’s Department transported Leister to Abilene Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries prior to taking him to the Dickinson County Detention Facility.Leister was arrested on an outstanding Dickinson County bond revocation warrant, on original felony charges including possession of opiates, burglary and criminal possession of a firearm. The bond amount on that warrant is $5,000.00.Leister had an outstanding Geary County warrant for failure to appear on felony fleeing and eluding and two counts of child endangerment. The bond amount on that warrant is $10,000.00.Leister had an outstanding Saline County warrant for failure to appear on theft and criminal damage to property charges. There was no bond on that warrant, it was body only.In addition to the outstanding warrants the Sheriff’s Office is requesting additional charges of attempting to flee and elude and felony obstruction.Leister has previous convictions that include forgery, burglary, theft, endangering a child, aggravated failure to appear, fleeing or attempt to elude law enforcement and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.---------

Just before 10a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for criminal use of weapons and minor in possession of tobacco involving a 15-year-old at Manhattan High School East Campus, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

The teen identified as Karsten Anderson was reportedly in possession of metal knuckles and a vape pen at school

Police arrested Anderson on requested charges of criminal use of a weapon and minor in possession of tobacco, according to the RCPD. He was processed through juvenile intake and released to his parents.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Junction City High School (JCHS) is celebrating 20 years of providing students a head start in their future endeavors through its Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways.

Developed in 2002, the school’s Career Academy structure allows students to choose one of three career academies their sophomore year: Business, Public Service and Hospitality (BPSH); Science, Engineering and Health (SEH); and Fine Arts and Human Services (FAHS). Each academy provides career clusters and courses corresponding to the CTE pathways, where students take a sequence of courses focusing on their career interests.

“We help students see the ‘why’ of their education while at JCHS,” said Becky Coy, CTE administrator at JCHS. “Our program helps students find an interest in a job field to pursue outside of high school.”

After finding a career pathway of interest, JCHS students can apply for an internship in that career. This allows them to explore that position in an in-depth, hands-on approach to learning and observation, with employers across the community. This year, JCHS is piloting a program with Fort Riley, allowing students to intern at Irwin Army Community Hospital and the Fort Riley Public Affairs Office.
