MANHATTAN— City management and the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department&nbsp;are evaluating the&nbsp;ability to offer modified programming this fall for youth sports and other activities, due to limited staffing for scorekeepers, referees, and facility supervisors, according to a media release from the city.

While the City of Manhattan intends to offer fall volleyball and flag football, among other programs, these programs may be modified or suspended based on available resources now and moving forward. Program modifications could consist of youth leagues for which City staff can take registrations and schedule games, but volunteers or parents would serve as referees and scorekeepers.

“We simply are not able to recruit, hire, or retain employees like we did pre-pandemic,” said City Manager Ron Fehr. “We understand Manhattan residents take pride in and have supported improvements to many of our parks and recreational facilities. However, we have been challenged with workforce shortages and reduced revenues that may not allow us to continue to provide the same recreational opportunities that we historically have offered.”

The City is committed to maintaining a high quality of life for residents, including the delivery of recreation services and programs through its many facilities.

How those services are offered is dependent on available staffing, resources, and revenue to fund these programs. This includes evaluating the number of participants and adequate fees to cover costs associated with each program.

“Over the last year, we have shifted to volunteer-led programming in adult sports as well as youth soccer, which has been a successful transition,” said Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation Wyatt Thompson.

“The City provides and manages sports facilities, fields, and certain equipment to accommodate these programs. City staff, in some cases, manages&nbsp;online registration, reserves facilities, and assists with scheduling, while community groups and volunteers coordinate management of the programs, including scorekeeping, refereeing, and coaching duties. This model has reduced City expenses, allowing us to continue facilitating these programs that our community enjoys.”

If the City is unable to fully staff or fund other youth programs and activities, it might look&nbsp;to this model now and in the future, or consider suspending certain programs with low enrollment.

“Parks and recreation were at the heart of many conversations during the development of our strategic plan last year,” Fehr said.

“One key action step that came from that effort was comprehensively evaluating parks and recreation offerings to meet the priorities of the community in a way that is sustainable. We need to continue that community conversation in a constructive way. Let’s work together to find solutions.”

Throughout 2022, the City will thoroughly evaluate its parks and recreational facilities, programs, and activities so it can position itself to consistently deliver programs that are community priorities, as well as account for how future changes might impact staffing, fees, cost recovery, and overall feasibility.

There is a 60-year old one bay rural fire station on the west side of Milford Reservoir. Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said on Wednesday that it will be gone by February of 2023. The facility will be replaced by a two-bay station and will house two fire trucks.

Junction City Commissioners addressed the issue of the vacant former Knights Inn, 1024 South Washington, this week. They adopted a resolution declaring the building a dangerous and unsafe structure.&nbsp;

Allen Dinkel, City Manager, said the resolution requires substantial progress on repair or demolition by Sept. 1. If demolition is pursued the owner has until Sept. 1 or the City could then begin taking bids for that purpose.&nbsp; If the City handles the demolition they could then bill the property owner, but if that is not paid the City would put the cost onto property taxes and eventually in the future it would be sold at a tax sale. While the building could come down this year it may be a few years before the site is freed for other uses.

Dinkel estimated that it could cost the City approximately $250,000 to get the building removed.

City declares former Knights Inn a dangerous and unsafe structure

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged auto theft.

Just after 6:30p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft, criminal trespass, and interference with LEO in the 1100 block of Westport Dr. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;

A 22-year-old woman reported a 36-year-old woman entered her car in the Taco Bell parking lot, locked herself inside and attempted to drive away in an attempt to steal the vehicle.

The estimated total loss associated with this case was approximately $13,000. 

The car was returned to its owner after police arrested Andrea Freeman, 36, of Manhattan in connection on requested charges of theft, criminal trespass, and interference with LEO. Freeman remains jailed on a total bond of $6,000, according to the RCPD.

Fort Riley will host two family oriented events on Thursday

Tickets are on sale for Triple Trivia Night, an event to benefit the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library Foundation and the project to build a new library for Junction City, Fort Riley and Geary County. It will be held on Thursday, July 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Spin City, 915 South Washington Street in Junction City.

According to a release from the Library, tickets for this adults-only event are $40 each or $100 for three including per 3-person team or for audience members. These will be available through July 13 at the library or from any committee member. They can also be purchased online at www.jclib.org and picked up at the will call table at the event. As supplies last, tickets will be available at the door for $45 each or $130 for a three-person team.

Rural Water District Four northwest of Junction City has water storage capacity of 200,000 gallons. This past three-day holiday weekend the District used more than 800,000 gallons. District Director Cliff White told a Milford Lake Partners meeting there is a problem on big weekends.....for example July 4th and Labor Day. He noted if RWD 4 is pumping 400,000 gallons a day during&nbsp; those peak times they will run out of water. "More storage capacity will be looked at. "

White noted that until that is achieved commercial users such as the State Park, Corp of Engineers and Acorn's Resort will not be allowed more usage during peak periods than the amount they used during the last couple of years. They will retain the amount of water they use now but not be given more water since RWD 4 doesn't have it.

The District has the water rights but funding for storage is the issue. "Right now we're down to six to twelve hours of storage during the summer time. Because of that it creates big problems if something happens, said White.&nbsp;

White said that they are trying to find funding, but none of the approaches have been successful. "Now that they have decided how they're going to use the state revolving loan fund and the money for that there may be a possibility to gain some funding for at least part of the project. " White confirmed that they're hoping to put in a new 300,000 to 400,000 gallon storage tank. The problem is that it could take some time before that occurs.

With a limit on water storage capacity there is the possibility that could hinder future development by commercial entities around the lake, making it even more important to obtain additional water capability.

Rural Water District Four needs more water storage capacity

Craig Bender, Military Affairs Council Director for the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce has submitted his resignation. His final function for that job will be to host the Veterans Ceremony for Sundown Salute on July 4th.

Bender plans to work for Grimmer Technologies Inc. in an Army Help Desk capacity for approximately 20 hours per week, which will pay him about the same as the MAC Director job.

Bender began working for the company back in January about 10 hours per week and asked Grimmer if they would want him for 20 hours each week. He then submitted a request to Chamber President Mickey Fornaro-Dean about possibly working Monday and Friday for Grimmer and Tuesday through Thursday for the Chamber. "I said I was pretty sure I could do 90% of the job, and I said I was willing to take a $25,000 pay cut to offset not being there in the office even though I was going to do the majority of the work. "

Bender explained that Fornaro-Dean took the request to the Chamber leadership. "And leadership decided that wasn't acceptable. It had to be five days a week and so they said it's either five days or nothing and so I submitted by letter of resignation.

JC Post talked with Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Mark Claussen who said officials view the MAC Director job as a fulltime position. "We need somebody to work it in a fulltime capacity. Mother Nature pruned trees in Junction City

GEARY COUNTY - At 7:00pm on Wednesday, June 22nd, first responders were called to the scene of a motorcycle crash on Interstate 70 near mile marker 302, near Marshall Army Airfield.

Upon arrival law enforcement found a 2016 Victory motorcycle driven by Patrick Noles, of Junction City, had been involved in a single vehicle crash.

Noles lost control of the motorcycle and laid it down before both he and the motorcycle impacted guardrail, sliding to a stop.

Noles was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, where he succumbed to injuries, on Thursday, June 23rd.

Noles was not wearing a safety helmet a the time of the crash.

Junction City man has passed away following a motorcycle crash on I-70

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged aggravated assault in Manhattan.

Just before 3p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault in the 5500 block of Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 24-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman reported an unknown male suspect pulled a gun on them as he passed them while driving westbound on Fort Riley Blvd. The victims also had a 2-year-old boy in the vehicle.

Kathy told the Optimists that she and her staff of 13 and on call/shift workers of 35-40, care for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault in Clay, Geary, Marshall, Pottawatomie, and Riley Counties and Fort Riley.

“When I was a teenager, my cousin was murdered by her fiancé. We saw no signs of this coming. In college, I decided to make a difference so others would not have to experience what my cousin did. That became my ‘Why’ as in why I do what I do, what is my purpose in life? Every morning when I get ready to start my day I look at my cousin’s picture to remind me,” Kathy stated.

The Crisis Center was created in 1979 after concerned community members concluded that existing services for victims of intimate partner violence and rape were inadequate. The Center offers free, confidential assistance for victims and their children with 24-hour hotlines; 24-hour crisis intervention; safe shelter; advocacy; case management; support groups and supportive counseling. The Center also provides educational programs to churches, schools and civic groups and specialized training to professional associations and employee groups. Kathy told club members that “the Crisis Center is funded by grants and private donations.” She also added that not only are women served, but also men who have been victims as boys or as adults.

The Center is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mrs. Ray stated that “in 2021 there were 2, 778 face to face contacts and 2, 557 individuals who spent the night in a sheltered situation.” The Crisis Center, Inc. contact is 1-800-727-2785.

RILEY COUNTY— It was a busy night for fire crews in Manhattan. At 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, crews were dispatched to 2300 Blueberry Drive for a report of a structure fire, according to&nbsp;Deputy Chief Ryan Almes.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story home with smoke showing from the attic. Crews entered the building and began extinguishing the attic fire.&nbsp; While on the scene, crews were alerted by the homeowner that smoke was coming from the house next door.&nbsp; 

The house at 2304 Blueberry Drive had a fire in the attic as well. The fires reached a combined second alarm and were both contained within 45 minutes.&nbsp; Riley County Fire Department provided an air trailer to the scene and personnel to fill air bottles, and also backfilled one of the stations in the City in case there were other calls for service. The house at 2300 Blueberry Drive was occupied at the time of the fire. Loss is estimated at $15,000 to contents and $50,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Taylor and Shane Sutherland. The house located at 2304 Blueberry Drive was unoccupied at the time of the fire.&nbsp; The loss is estimated at $5,000 to contents and $20,000 to the structure.&nbsp; The owner is listed as Devon Bedell and Kevin White. The cause of both fires was due to storm damage to the electrical service supplying both homes. In addition to these two house fires, the Manhattan Fire Department responded to 29 storm-related calls for service.

&nbsp;The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ram 1500 pickup driven by&nbsp; Winfer R. Abernathy, 70, Junction City, was northbound on County Line Road just south of 2nd Road approximately 7 and one half miles southeast of Wakefield.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It struck the bridge and overturned in the west ditch.

Abernathy and a passenger&nbsp;Margaret Abernathy, 74, Junction City, were pronounced dead at the scene. They were both wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

 Participants will need to provide their own shotgun and ammunition and pre-registration is required. The class will include trap rules, safety, shotgun and ammunition selection, range layout, shooting position and coaching through 100 targets.

The hours for the clinic at Sportsmen's Acres will be 9 a.m. to&nbsp; 3 p.m. The cost is free for youth 17 and under and $35 for adults.

Dr. Reginald Eggleston, Superintendent of USD 475 Geary County Schools, has announced a new Chief of District Operations. Karl DeArmond, Chief Information Officer, will transition into his new role effective July 1st. DeArmond has been with the district in his current position for seven years. He formerly served as the Information Technology Director at Geary Community Hospital.

“Mr. DeArmond is no stranger to district operations after having worked closely with the team during construction of the new high school and working through the pandemic response. He has the essential skills for the position and provides the district with an easy transition,” stated Eggleston.

In addition to automating the new high school while also enabling the district security program, the district Information Technology Department played a significant role in remote learning programs during the pandemic response period and was a key element to the Operations COVID response plan.

While retaining oversight of district Information Technology, as Chief of Operations, DeArmond will assume administrative responsibilities for Transportation, Purchasing, Warehousing, Print Plant, Child Nutrition services, Safety &amp; Security, facilities maintenance, and master planning.

DeArmond and his wife Jodi, a teacher at Chapman high school, are lifetime area residents.

He fills a vacancy created by David Wild who announced his intention to step down from the Chief of Operations post at the end of the current contract period, June 30.

Pilot Club of Junction City has donated $500 to Pawnee Mental Health Services to sponsor an Ice Cream social at the upcoming&nbsp;S.T.A.R.S. Camp.

The Camp is for Children ages 7-17 who have Serious Emotional Disturbances (SED). Kids come from 10 counties, including Geary.

For most of these children S.T.A.R.S. camp is the only summer camp they can attend due to the symptoms of their disorder.

MANHATTAN — If you’ve gasped at the grocery store checkout line recently, you’re probably not alone.&nbsp;

Inflation has hit American’s dinner table and it’s been painfully obvious on food eaten at home where consumers paid 11.9% more in May 2022 compared to May 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>.&nbsp;

“It’s amazing,” said Lisa Martin, an extension agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Shawnee County office. “Every time I go to the store, something I normally buy has increased 50 cents or even a dollar.”&nbsp;

Martin notes that supply chain shortages, bottlenecks in shipping and transportation, and a tight labor pool have all contributed to rising food prices. “It’s a time when all of us really need to think about how much we are spending on food and ways we can cut back,” she said.&nbsp;

<h2>Make a plan, and get to the checkout stand, says Martin&nbsp;</h2>By PAT MELGARES K-State Research and Extension news service&nbsp;MANHATTAN — If you’ve gasped at the grocery store checkout line recently, you’re probably not alone.&nbsp;Inflation has hit American’s dinner table and it’s been painfully obvious on food eaten at home where consumers paid 11.9% more in May 2022 compared to May 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>.&nbsp;“It’s amazing,” said Lisa Martin, an extension agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Shawnee County office. “Every time I go to the store, something I normally buy has increased 50 cents or even a dollar.”&nbsp;Martin notes that supply chain shortages, bottlenecks in shipping and transportation, and a tight labor pool have all contributed to rising food prices. “It’s a time when all of us really need to think about how much we are spending on food and ways we can cut back,” she said.&nbsp;Some recommendations are not new, she said:&nbsp;<ul>
