&nbsp; MANHATTAN —&nbsp;A family who moved to Manhattan nearly 50 years ago and stayed because of Kansas State University is being honored as K-State's 2021&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/parentsandfamily/familyday/familyoftheyear/" target="_blank">Family of the Year</a>.&nbsp; The Buyle family will be recognized during the university's 93rd annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/parentsandfamily/familyday/" target="_blank">Family Weekend</a>&nbsp;at the K-State football game versus Nevada on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The members of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/chimes/" target="_blank">Chimes Junior Honorary</a>&nbsp;select the Family of the Year based on their affiliation with K-State, what family means to them and their demonstration of K-State pride. "The Buyle family is a large, close family and they have been involved with K-State for many years," said Brianna Streeter, Chimes' co-director of events. "For three generations and many more to follow, each member has left their mark and became a forever member of the K-State family." Natives of Detroit, Michigan, the Buyles, Ken '85, and Kathy '86, '89, moved to Manhattan in 1973 when Ken was stationed at Fort Riley. They had no prior connection to the city. "They fell in love with the community," the family's nominator said. "They became avid Wildcats and chose to remain in Manhattan to raise their family when Ken retired in 1979 as a lieutenant colonel after a 23-year Army career." This was just the beginning of the family's extended K-State history. According to their application, in 1979 after his Army retirement, Ken became the chief financial officer for K-State's Division of Biology and Kathy enrolled at K-State to begin her undergraduate studies in speech pathology and audiology. She continued on to earn a master's degree in special education and Ken worked in the division for 35 years until his retirement in 2014. He also earned his master's degree in marriage and family therapy from K-State. Education has always been a priority for the Buyle family. Five of their six children are K-State alumni, ﬁve of six daughters/sons-in-law attended K-State, and 10 of their 17 grandchildren are alumni or are enrolled for the fall 2021 semester. Including spouses, a total of 28 K-State degrees over three generations have been awarded to the extended Buyle family. The Buyles also have experience serving the university in many capacities. The Buyles' son Mark, '88, was elected as one of two 1987 K-State Student Ambassadors during his senior year. Daughter Suzy Buyle Auten 86, '05, is director of the Professional Master of Business Administration Program for K-State's College of Business Administration. Soldiers from the 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, are returning to Fort Riley following a successful nine-month rotation to the Republic of Korea. The first group of Soldiers arrived on post earlier this month, with the remaining set to redeploy in large groups in the next few weeks. The entire battalion will return by late November.

The battalion is being replaced by the 4th Squadron (Heavy Attack Reconnaissance), 6th Cavalry Regiment, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade from Joint Base Lewis–McChord, Washington.

Several hundred Soldiers from the battalion departed for Korea in December and assumed the Korea rotational force mission as part of the United States’ commitment to maintaining peace and deterring aggression in northeast Asia.

When the battalion was not training, it also supported USFK in their COVID-19 response efforts. Soldiers from the battalion volunteered to do community for incoming soldiers, families, and civilians to the Korean Peninsula.

MANHATTAN – A Kansas State University veterinarian is reminding producers that properly handling bottles containing livestock vaccinations is crucial so that it remains effective for the animal. &nbsp;

Gregg Hanzlicek, director of the Production Animal Field Investigations at K-State, said that keeping the vaccination bottles between 35-45 degrees Fahrenheigt and out of UV light is critical. “The UV light will have a detrimental effect on the live virus that’s in the mixed-up vaccine,” Hanzlicek said. Many automatic syringes used for administering livestock vaccinations will have the barrel of the syringe -- where the vaccination is -- covered to reduce exposure to UV rays. “It’s still best if you can just keep those (syringe) guns out of the light completely," Hanzlicek said.&nbsp;

Some other tips, according to Hanzlicek, include:&nbsp;

Hazlicek said once the vaccine reaches temperatures above 45 degrees F, the virus will be killed.&nbsp;

In a recent study, researchers looked at 300 producers, retailers and veterinary clinics, where temperature logs were placed in the refrigerators where the vaccines were stored.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“What they found was that 76% of those 300 hundred refrigerators did not keep those temperatures between 35-45 degrees,” Hanzlicek said. K-State vet: Tips for handling vaccinations, maintaining effectiveness 

Geary County residents had an opportunity to visit the new Sheriff's Department Milford Lake substation during an open house Wednesday evening. The new facility, built at a cost of $699,000, was paid for by asset forfeiture funds. Local property tax dollars were not used to fund the project.

A lot of equipment is stored at the facility, which serves marine and dive team members plus other units.

The substation is located at 8421 Quarry Road on the same site that houses the Rural Water District Four headquarters. The location is about one mile from Milford Lake.

The substation includes a training room, offices, kitchen, storage area, restroom and shower facilities.

Members of the public could visit the Milford Lake Substation 

TOPEKA, Kan. - If all goes as planned, Topeka will be home to a&nbsp;<a href="https://whataburger.com/home" target="_blank">Whataburger</a>&nbsp;restaurant in the coming years.

A representative from the iconic hamburger chain told 13 NEWS that the franchise group KMO Burger plans to open 30 Whataburger restaurants throughout their franchise area through 2028.

Locations will include in the Kansas City metro, Wichita, St. Joseph and Topeka.

No specific time frame on when Topeka could see a Whataburger was given.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/160/COVID-19-in-Kansas" target="_blank">Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment’s weekly update</a>&nbsp;shows 63 active clusters in K-through-12 schools, resulting in 408 cases and one hospitalization. That’s up from 31 schools clusters with 179 cases a week ago. It also makes schools surpass long-term care facilities as locations with the most active clusters. The state showed 60 active clusters in long-term care facilities this week, accounting for 427 cases with 18 hospitalizations and 23 deaths.

The state only identifies clusters that are considered exposure locations, which are defined as those having five or more cases in the prior 14 days. Nine of the schools are considered exposure locations this week, one more than a week ago. Among the are St. George Elementary School in Pottawatomie Co., Rock Hills Junior/Senior High in Jewell Co., and Linn Public School in Washington Co.

Overall, the state has 208 active clusters, up from 177 a week ago.

Other exposure locations include the Shawnee Co. Jail, and Good Samaritan Valley Vista Nursing Home in Wamego.

COVID clusters double in Kansas K-thru-12 schools

MARYSVILLE, Kan. (WIBW) - Marysville’s Chief of Police has been relieved of his duties by the city administrator, and many residents are stunned by the news.

Todd Ackerman has served as Marysville’s police chief since April 20, 1999. His 22-year career came to an end last week when he was relieved of his duties by City Administrator, Austin St. John.

St. John would not say why he let Chief Ackerman go, but did release a statement to 13 NEWS on Wednesday.

He said, “As a practical matter and as good government practice, personnel matters are routinely handled confidentially. This practice protects the employee as well as the governmental body with regard to private, personal information.”

During Monday night’s city council meeting, several Marysville residents spoke in support of Ackerman, including his wife.

She brought a quarter up to the podium to use in an analogy saying, “Maybe some of you are questioning if I’m being honest. You can see one side and I’m telling you I’m being honest, but what if that’s not enough? What if the people that elected you to your position want you to question me, to see the other side, to take a look. What if they want you to validate what I’m saying? If I were sitting in your seat I would do what they asked because they are who elected me.”

Shake up in Marysville after Police Chief relieved of his duties

Longtime Geary County Museum curator, Heather Hagedorn, will expand her duties. She has been named the executive director for the Historical Society and will also continue as curator.

"They're combining positions, so I'll still be doing all the things I've been doing as curator." said Hagedorn. That work includes preparing exhibits for the museum.&nbsp;

Hagedorn said there is already a plan of operations for at least the next couple of months. "Because people haven't stopped scheduling programs and we haven't stopped figuring out what kind of events we can do, so we're already rolling ahead."&nbsp;

Hagedorn noted that she would like to get some younger people interested in history. "Most of the people that we see are either very young, elementary school children which is wonderful, or much older age people. " Hagedorn would like to see younger adults and youth engaged in the history of the county, and why Geary County is a good place to live.

That work includes preparing exhibits for the museum.&nbsp;Hagedorn said there is already a plan of operations for at least the next couple of months. "Because people haven't stopped scheduling programs and we haven't stopped figuring out what kind of events we can do, so we're already rolling ahead."&nbsp;Hagedorn noted that she would like to get some younger people interested in history. "Most of the people that we see are either very young, elementary school children which is wonderful, or much older age people. " Hagedorn would like to see younger adults and youth engaged in the history of the county, and why Geary County is a good place to live.

Just before 4p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft by deception in the 800 block of Commons Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Gamestop reported two unknown suspects used a fraudulent bank card to make a transaction. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,020. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

United Way names campaign co-chairs

Geary County Commissioners are searching to fill both a financial coordinator and convention &amp; visitor's bureau director positions. 

There are three candidates for the CVB job with the third one being interviewed on Thursday. Trish Giordano, Commission Chair, explained it's possible a decision on hiring one of them could possibly come soon.&nbsp;

On the financial coordinator job Giordano noted&nbsp; that several applications have been received. "We're going to meet with the consultant next week in executive session on those people that have applied to see if anybody's qualified and what we're looking for and then decide to go ahead and do some interviews."

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz today announced 13 counties will receive a combined total of $7.5 million through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Off-System Bridge Improvement Program, according to a media release from her office.

“My administration is committed to improving the overall transportation system in our state, including bridges owned by cities and counties in need of long-overdue repairs,” Kelly said. “We look forward to fostering further partnerships among all levels of government to continue building the kind of robust, responsive infrastructure system that moves people and goods as efficiently as possible across Kansas and boosts our state and local economies.”

In Kansas, there are more than 19,300 locally owned bridges, of which 1,230 are in “poor” condition and an additional 3,844 are either unable to carry legal loads or accommodate modern truck sizes. Off-system bridges are located on roadways not otherwise eligible for federal aid.

State funding for the 13 projects will be enhanced by a minimum 20 percent match from each recipient, resulting in $10.4 million in total local infrastructure improvements. KDOT received 87 applications requesting $46.4 million as part of the Off-System Bridge Improvement Program.

“There is clearly a high demand for transportation infrastructure investments across our state,” Lorenz said.&nbsp;“By partnering with KDOT, our communities are better able to help local road systems do the job they’re intended to do – like moving people and goods – and thus promote economic development and create more opportunities for growth.”

In addition to this federally required program, KDOT reinstated the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program bridge program as part of the Kelly Administration’s 10-year, bipartisan Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program to assist cities and counties with the local roadway system.&nbsp;

Area counties to get funds for bridge projects

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The father of a football coach at a suburban Kansas City high school said he hopes his unvaccinated son’s death from COVID-19 will convince people that the disease “is real.”

KMBC-TV&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmbc.com/article/family-mourn-young-olathe-east-coach-who-died-of-covid-19/37565784#">reports</a>&nbsp;that Chris Burnett, who coached football for Olathe East High School and an all-female team called the Kansas City Glory, died Saturday after two weeks in the hospital, said his parents, Kim and Carolyn Burnett. He was 34 and studying to be a physical education teacher.

His parents said they talked to him about getting vaccinated.

“You know he’s young. He was like ‘I’m going to wait and see. I’m not sure,’” said his mother.

His parents said he eventually told them he would talk to his physician about the vaccine but never got the chance.

“We just hope that opens up people’s eyes that COVID is real. It doesn’t care how old you are. It’s not an old people thing; it’s a people thing,” his father said.

In addition to coaching at Olathe East High School, Burnett has two daughters who currently attend the school and one who recently graduated. His 12-year-old son attends a nearby middle school.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with the Burnett family during this tough time,” Olathe Public Schools said in a statement.

This is not a done deal yet, but Geary County officials spent time Monday talking about where to locate a new emergency operations center. There was a plan to put the center in the basement of the County Office Building and a contract was even signed late in 2020 by a former commission.

But Trish Giordano, current County Commission Chair,&nbsp; wants to put two offices in the basement area along with a scaled down emergency operations center. "The reason why they put a basement in was for storage and if we ever grew, so if we can make everybody happy, get an EOC down there, get a couple of offices and also have enough storage then I think everybody has to be happy. But the EOC has to be smaller."

Giordano noted that the public building commission was present and some of the department heads spoke giving all their concerns about the lack of space that would be available if the EOC remains big. "So I think we can do a little bit of adjusting and take care of all the problems. " The commission chair noted that law enforcement and emergency management wanted to keep the EOC larger. 

An emergency operations center could come into heavy use during times of disaster by multiple agencies. "But they also understand that we need to do something. They weren't in favor of doing the offices, but I feel to make the most of the area down there and not give us another issue that's what needs to be done," said Giordanoi.

Now the department heads will determine how much space they need for storage. Giordano added that the contractor is willing to work with the county on this project. The county is also still awaiting word on whether a proposed FEMA grant will be received to help pay for a portion of the project.
