GEARY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities have identified the the Kansas man who died in accident that occurred just before 5:30p.m. Sunday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Kia 4-door passenger vehicle driven by John C. Nevins, 50, Overland Park, was eastbound on Interstate 70 seven miles east of Junction City.

The Kia crossed the median into the westbound lanes and struck a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by Moctar Cheikh, 39, Cincinnati, OH., head-on.

Nevins was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Johnson Funeral Home.&nbsp; Cheikh was not transported to treatment. The KHP did not have complete seat belt usage information.

KHP IDs Kan. man who died in I-70 head-on crash

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Award-winning author Jane Kurtz, a former ten-year Kansas resident who has published more than 40 books for young readers, on Thursday will visit Sheridan Elementary School to help students and educators see the ways that reading and writing can make a difference in their lives.

A decade ago, Kurtz created a character for the American Girl Doll of the Year series, Lanie, who goes on a quest to save monarch butterflies. 

“That was the beginning of my interest in citizen science,” Kurtz said. “Seeing that all of us can do a little part to save birds and bees and butterflies and other humble creatures that make our world so wonderful.”


Her two latest picture books – a nonfiction called “What Do They Do With All That Poo?” and a fiction romp about chickens loose in an urban neighborhood similar to the one where she now lives – both help children celebrate wildlife close to home. A novel for young readers set in Kansas, Anna Way Here, was inspired by her years in Kansas and discovering lavender and emu as a new part of farm life. Another novel, Planet Jupiter, shows experimenting she has done with her own backyard habitat in Portland, Oregon, where she was born and now lives.

“My dad grew up on a farm in eastern Oregon,” Kurtz said. “My husband grew up on a farm in Kansas. Now it feels like my turn to learn about soil and compost, plants and animals.”

Kurtz loves helping young people be more engaged, sometimes through laughter, with science, the Earth, and fellow young readers around the world.

Some of Kurtz’s books celebrate her childhood growing up in Ethiopia, where she now does volunteer work for literacy alongside several Kansas educators, including former Sheridan Elementary School Librarian Carol Settgast. Settgast later worked with students at Sheridan to write one of the first colorful, playful books in Kurtz’s Ready Set Go Books project.

“Books like that are the first chance a lot of children in Ethiopia have to read in their own language,” Kurtz said. “I learned to read in Ethiopia. Nothing makes me happier than having a chance to share a love of reading with children here in the U.S. and children in Ethiopia. I always hope to leave a school with a bigger vision of just how powerful reading and writing can be.”

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a report of alleged criminal damage to property in the 2000 block of Tecumseh Road in Manhattan.

The Riley County Health Department reported an unknown suspect broke out multiple windows with a baseball bat. 

Officials are working to determine an estimated total loss associated with this case.

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Police do not believe this incident is mask or COVID related or that the Health Department was targeted with a motive.

A German tradition, volksmarch means "people's march," and the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of 7th and Washington in Downtown Junction City. There will be both a 5K and 13K march. The 5K walk will go to 5th street park and back, while the 13K will march to the new Junction City High School and back.

The first 300 to finish will receive Volksmarch medals and registration and mass start time will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the day of the event.

Registration for the event is $5 in advance online, and $10 to register the day of the event. Children 10 and under can participate for FREE.

Oktoberfest Volksmarch set for October 9th

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with alleged criminal restraint.

Just after 8a.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for an attempted protection order violation, stalking, criminal damage to property and criminal restraint in the 2700 block of Amherst Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Leisure Storage and a 41-year-old woman reported a 34-year-old man locked the woman in a storage unit and damaged the door to the unit with a tree. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,000.

Geary County Sheriff's Department will be holding an open house event Wednesday, September 15th&nbsp; at the new Milford Lake Substation located at 8421 Quarry Rd.&nbsp; The Open house will begin at 6:00p.m. 

 You will be able to view the substation with static displays from the marine unit and dive teams. There will be sausage/hotdogs donated by Smithfield, buns, chips and waters.  An informal town hall will begin at 7:00p.m. where the Sheriff and command staff will speak and take questions.

Tava Gustafson earned multiple grand champion purple ribbons at the Geary County Free Fair this year.&nbsp; This past weekend she showed her market steer and goat at the State Fair in Hutchinson.&nbsp; Tava finished first in her class with her Hereford steer and 5th in class with her goat.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the first time in the United States, there are more older adults than young children.&nbsp;

“The first of the Baby Boomers turned 65 in 2011,” said Kansas State University specialist in aging Erin Yelland. “So, the oldest of the Baby Boomers are just now turning 75, which means that this population is going to continue to rapidly grow.”&nbsp;

Older Americans – those age 65 and up – have topped 54 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, experiencing rapid growth over the past 10 years. The youngest age group – those age 5 and younger – has remained mostly flat in the U.S. and is estimated at just under 20 million.&nbsp;

Further, current projections from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that America’s older population will surpass those 18 and younger (currently at about 73 million) by the year 2035.&nbsp;

It’s estimated that by 2050, 12.7 million Americans will suffer from Alzheimer’s dementia, Yelland said. More older adults will be living in long-term care facilities.&nbsp;

“We are also seeing that heart disease is the No. 1 killer among adults 65 and older, and that can be attributed to the 45% of adults who are obese, the 77% of older adults who have hypertension and the 5 million adults that live in poverty, which greatly affects our health.”&nbsp;

Yelland said aging well should be viewed as “a life span challenge.”&nbsp;

Yelland said K-State Research and Extension agents across Kansas are working to help older adults remain independent, exercise and maintain their living spaces in ways that help them remain healthy.&nbsp;

Yelland added that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/aging/" target="_blank">K-State’s Center on Aging</a>&nbsp;offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in gerontology. Its graduate program is listed as one of the top 5 programs in the United States, she said. &nbsp;

“The need for gerontologists and professionals that understand aging has never been greater,” Yelland said. “So opening that opportunity for students to understand the importance of aging, and how to address aging issues in their own career, is incredibly important. And we are so excited to be able to offer that opportunity to students and professionals.”&nbsp;

“There’s not a whole lot of people that have the goal to live in long term care facilities,” Yelland said. “Most of us want to age in our home and live independently as long as possible. K-State Research and Extension is working to help older adults in that way.”&nbsp;

A 2011 Toyota Corrola driven by Shicheng Yang, 24, Manhattan, struck a pedestrian identified as 25-year-old Rachel Meyer of Manhattan while she was sitting against a building behind Hunan Express in the 1100 block of Moro Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Meyer to Via Christ by EMS for treatment of her injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD reported no additional details.

Beatrice Griebel, 19, of Stockton, a passenger in the Ford Fusion, was transported by Life Star to Stormont Vail for treatment of her injuries.

Chance of storms exists on Tuesday

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie&nbsp;County farmer and rancher Last Sunday I was in church minding my own business when my occupation came under fire. Our church is without a pastor right now, and we rely on pulpit supply, so the preacher was a guest fill-in. The prayer he had prepared was one promoting environmental justice and in it we prayed to save our world from the overuse of harsh chemicals and the erosion of the soils brought on by agriculture. As you can imagine, that caught my attention. The pastor called on our church to take up the mantle of environmental justice. That carried with it a list of other issues I will not get into, but it also put a spotlight on global climate change and the effect agriculture has on it. I am Presbyterian, but the environmental justice movement was one promoted by the liturgy shared by many denominations. In our bulletin a small blurb promoted the environmental justice issue and indicated it was supported by several other churches including Catholic and Lutheran organizations. I would guess no matter what your religious affiliation you can find a link to this movement. Upon further research, and it did not take much, I learned one way your church could help save the environment was to limit the amount of red meat consumed because the production of red meat and the correlating grain production produced greenhouse gases. This is a tactic used by environmental activists that we know not to be true. Yes, the environmental movement has infiltrated even the most sacred space of the church. I am not trying to turn anyone against the church but rather I am saying as Farm Bureau members and as farmers and ranchers we must get involved to tell our story and let our fellow church members know what we are doing. We know we do not overuse “harsh” chemicals, and we do our best to retain and improve the soil. We all know we do our best to protect God’s creation, and now it is time to help educate our fellow church members. It is also time for us to get involved in the leadership of our churches at the regional and national levels so factual and correct information can be shared. If we do not tell our story others will tell it for us and we cannot let that happen. If it can happen in our churches it will happen in all other areas too. For that matter this charge should go for every other organization in our lives whether it be the Lions or Rotary and even the Chamber in our local towns and cities. We know as farmers and ranchers we are the best caretakers of all God has entrusted us with. We work hard to care for the water, soil and air we all rely on, we know that, but the challenge is to make sure our urban neighbors know the truth. I know I am preaching to the choir so maybe we all need to start preaching to the congregation.

We all know we do our best to protect God’s creation, and now it is time to help educate our fellow church members. It is also time for us to get involved in the leadership of our churches at the regional and national levels so factual and correct information can be shared. If we do not tell our story others will tell it for us and we cannot let that happen. If it can happen in our churches it will happen in all other areas too. For that matter this charge should go for every other organization in our lives whether it be the Lions or Rotary and even the Chamber in our local towns and cities. We know as farmers and ranchers we are the best caretakers of all God has entrusted us with. We work hard to care for the water, soil and air we all rely on, we know that, but the challenge is to make sure our urban neighbors know the truth. I know I am preaching to the choir so maybe we all need to start preaching to the congregation.

Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association members can get rid of some outdoor treasures and pick up a few other items during a Swap Meet Monday evening at Sportsman's Acres. The event will be part of the monthly meeting for the organization.&nbsp;

The trading will pause briefly at 7 p.m. to conduct Association business, then return to wheeling and dealing until the dealing's done.

You can load up your guns, tackle, ammo, reloading tools and supplies, primers, knives, tents, targets and bows that you no longer use and see if you can find them a new home. The Swap Meet will begin at 6 p.m. Some change will be available at the event, but it's recommended that you bring your own if you want to buy or sell.

&nbsp;La Donna Junghans and Duane Blythe, Co-chairs of the Aging Well project. LaDonna told&nbsp; Junction city Breakfast Optimist Club members this past week&nbsp; that “Aging Well is a non-profit organization with a mission to serve elders and their families in an honorable way with skilled nursing, assisted living, and supportive senior housing.&nbsp;

The entire campus will be focused on an environment where Elder’s lives are purposeful not passive, staff are motivated by person not process and home is intentional not institutional.”

While currently in Phase 1, the plan for services includes 3 small homes providing personalized skilled care for 36 elders in a family environment and 14 assisted living apartments. The financial campaign goal in this phase is to raise $13.5 million; grants, foundations and private donations of $3.5 million and a USDA loan of $10 million.

The facility will be located on what is being called the Spring Valley Campus. This location is at the northeast side of the intersections of Highway 18 and Spring Valley Road.

Junghans also stated that “This facility will be more than brick and mortar, but a place of pride with an option for those who have a need for health care (in this type of setting) in our area. There is evidence that workers in this field leave Geary County to work in facilities in other counties. We want to get those workers back here.”

Blythe shared that “the last non-profit facility for elders was the Good Samaritan on Spruce Street. Aging Well would be owned by the community as a senior living campus.” He also encouraged people “to donate to Aging Well during Match Day on October 12 at the Municipal Building or online. Fifty cents on every dollar will be matched that day towards reaching Aging Well’s financial goal. 

Aging Well will give elders who are on Medicare, Medicaid or are private pay another option. The plan is to have the facility ready for occupancy by Christmas of 2022” Blythe said.

Terrorist attacks of 9/11 brought unwelcome and unwanted change to a generation of Americans, the Army and our world. During the 20th anniversary commemoration ceremony at the Global War on Terrorism monument at Fort Riley, the Garrison Commander, Col. William McKanay made those comments and also noted that day brought uncertainty, anger and grief. "But that day's destruction and devastation did not break our spirit or leave us living in fear. It made us stronger." 

McKanay noted that the wounds and scars from that day fortified American's pride and patriotism, and reignited the spirit of service in the hearts of a new generation. On Patriot's day the thousands of lives lost on 9/11 are remembered, along with those who served in the global war on terrorism and made the ultimate sacrifice. "Here at this place we remember those of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley who died in service to this nation."

The Global War on Terrorism Memorial displays 214 names of 1st Infantry Division Soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The Memorial is located on the east end of the Cavalry Parade Field.

Members of Gold Star families who lost a Soldier were in attendance for the&nbsp;commemoration ceremony which also included the playing of "America the Beautiful" by members of the 1st Infantry Division Band and the presentation of a wreath in front of the Memorial.&nbsp;

Gold Star family member Sierra Herring said she hopes that the nation is still healing together, "and that really the survivors find peace and know they are never alone."

Twenty-year anniversary of 9/11 is observed at Fort Riley

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State Athletics officially opened its brand new addition to Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum Saturday, celebrating with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Shamrock Zone.&nbsp;

The $50 million facility offers an addition to the previously existing Legends room on the north side of Bramlage that ties in the south side of BSFS, offering 24 new concessions points of sale, new restrooms, and several suites.&nbsp;

K-State opens Shamrock Zone

HUTCHINSON — On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Kansas State Fair Assistant
 General Manager Denny Stoecklein had a problem on the fairgrounds he 
was working to fix.

"I think it was on the opening night of the 
fair, it might have been on the Saturday, I got a call, I got an 
anonymous phone call," Stoecklein said. "Somebody said, you've got some 
people working at one of your gates, actually two of your gates that are
 stealing from you. The fair hires 500 to 600 seasonal folks and a lot 
of them had been there for many, many years. The people they were saying
 were doing this were veteran employees."

After auditing tickets for a couple of days, it was time to see if they could catch anyone.

"Lt.
 Randy Moon with the Highway Patrol, Randy was officed on the 
Fairgrounds at that time," Stoecklein said. "The lieutenant in that 
office is typically the one who is kind of over the Fair for the Highway
 Patrol on site and we're talking about this and making the plan that 
we're going to park a horse trailer right next to this gate and put some
 troopers in the back with cameras and film the goings on and see if we 
can pick up on anything."

"His
 pager goes off and he looks down at it and he says, a plane just hit 
the World Trade Center," Stoecklein said. "We kind of commented that, 
you know, tragic accident, you know, and we get back to our meeting and 
we're planning and doing some things. The pager goes off again. Randy 
looks at it. He goes, another plane just hit the World Trade Center and 
then you knew. This is not an accident."

Given that everyone 
wanted information more than anything at the time and smartphones 
weren't in every pocket, the next question for the fair was easy to 
figure out, but hard to answer.

"What do we do now, do we keep 
having a fair, what's going on?" Stoecklein said. "I would say, within 
60 to 90 minutes, we were gathered on the Fairgrounds with Highway 
Patrol, city police, emergency management, you name it. Every emergency 
management, certainly at the local level and they were in touch with 
people at the state and federal level, trying to get a better 
understanding of, what are we dealing with? From that, we kind of just 
started to make plans as to what we wanted to do and tried to figure 
out, how do we continue, if we continue?"

Any decision involving the fair involves the Governor's office.

"Bill
 Graves was the governor at that time," Stoecklein said. "It just so 
happened that the governor, on that day, was in Wichita. Wichita was 
hosting what was called a midwest U.S.-Japan association conference. 
There were people from a number of states as well as Japan in Wichita. 
We were able to get in touch with the governor, because, as you would 
imagine, that conference was canceled. Now you've got people with a lot 
of anxiety at this conference that just want to get home, some of them 
to Japan, but there's no air travel."

Since getting from Wichita to Hutchinson on the ground wasn't an issue, Graves was able to visit.

"The
 governor came over to Hutch, met with the board and management of the 
fair and talked to law enforcement and the decision was made that we're 
going to continue," Stoecklein said. "We're going to have the fair. I 
don't remember all of the pros and cons and things we talked about, but,
 you know, one of the things that was commonly mentioned by all of us 
was, you know, if we shut the doors then, whoever is doing this, they 
win."

The crowd that day was understandably somber.

"One of 
the probably most visited booths at the fair, right in the heart of the 
fairgrounds is the KWCH booth," Stoecklein said. "They have all those 
windows open and they had TVs in there and you can imagine what the TVs 
were tuned to. People were just gathered around that en masse, trying to
 understand what was going on and learning everything we could. 
Obviously, we increased the security at the gates significantly, but 
decided we were going to continue through the rest of the fair."

"Blessid
 Union of Souls was scheduled to perform that night," Stoecklein said. 
"They likely were on the Fairgrounds and had arrived. I don't know that 
they were flying in that day, but, even if they were there, probably 
having a concert that night wasn't the appropriate thing to do. They did
 not perform."

There was another change to the lineup at the last minute.

"Lee
 Ann Womack was supposed to perform, I think with Keith Urban," 
Stoecklein said. "She couldn't get there. The group Lonestar, I think, 
was traveling back to Nashville. I want to say they'd been out west. 
Maybe they'd been in Utah. The Utah State Fair runs the same time as the
 Kansas State Fair, which would make sense. Our agency got in touch with
 them and said, hey, do you want to make a pit stop in Hutch and do a 
show, which they did."

Stoecklein's favorite memory surrounds another grandstand act that year.

"The
 group Styx was scheduled to perform on September 15th," Stoecklein 
said. "I don't recall where they were. For some reason, I think that 
they were maybe on a little break and they were all going to meet up 
again in Hutch. They weren't on tour buses or anything. I think they 
were going to fly into Wichita for the show. Obviously, airfare being 
shut down put a stop to that, but they were determined not to miss the 
show. They felt it was important to get there. 

"It would have 
been their first performance since the events of 9-11. They got rental 
cars, any way, any how that they could get to Hutchinson, Kansas. They 
found a way to do it and put on just an incredible show. We had a 
gentleman that worked for the agency that the fair used to book talent, 
Romeo Entertainment Group. His name was Steve Bogdanovich. We called him
 Bogie. Bogie was our guy backstage and his favorite saying, no matter 
what the situation, he would just look at you and his glasses always 
rode low on his nose and he'd look over the top of them and say, it's 
all good. It's all good. 

"Bogie called me early that day and he 
said, boss, I need a flag on a pole. An American flag on a pole. I said 
okay, what do you need that for, Bogie? He said, Styx wants it. I said 
okay. We rounded up a long wooden pole and a flag. I got with our 
carpenter and he put the screws through the grommets and got it affixed 
to the pole and I took it down to the grandstand and gave it to Bogie. I
 didn't think much of it until that night. I go down to check on the 
show. Bogie and I are near the back of the stage and I see this flag 
rolled up and it's back behind the drum kit, while the show is going on.

"Styx
 does their set. They walk off and we're waiting for the encore. People 
are getting worked up and getting excited and ready for them to come 
back. Twenty years ago, and I'm not as young as I once was, but I'm 
pretty sure I remember this pretty closely to how it happened. One of 
the members of Styx walks back to that flag and grabs it and then they 
all just walked to the front of the stage and lifted it up as high as 
they could. I have never been in a place so loud as it was when they did
 that. It just about blew the roof off the grandstand."

Stoecklein
 got the band to sign a photo of them with the flag when they returned 
later in their careers and he has that photo at home.

"There's 
never been a moment when I looked back and thought, did we make the 
right call?" Stoecklein said. "I never doubted that continuing with it 
was the right thing to do and the appropriate and safe thing to do. When
 you look at the history of the fair, it was there through the Great 
Depression, through two world wars, how many other conflicts and then 
9-11."

Stoecklein currently serves as Director of Marketing and 
Public Relations. He was with the fair until 2015 before going to the 
college.

The quake at 8:07 a.m. measured a magnitude 3.1 and was centered and was centered approximately three miles southwest of Woodbine, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

USGS: 3.1 earthquake in Dickinson County

On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on Flight 93 over Shanksville in western Pennsylvania two members of the Fort Riley Museums staff looked back on the way those attacks would have an impact at Fort Riley.

Director of Fort Riley Museums Dr. Robert Smith noted the attacks certainly affected the Army. American troops were ordered into Afghanistan to pursue the Al-Qaeda perpetrators and remain involved there over the last 20 years. There were troop deployments from Fort Riley during that time.

After many years as an open post, Smith noted that Fort Riley also became a closed post. "I've noticed that the training has been more significant here since 9/11 in operational security. We watch what we do, ( what ) we say and if we see something we say something." Smith observed that the world has changed. "History's going to realize that and we're going to that now, that our way of life has changed dramatically since that day."

Museum Specialist Debra Clark was working at Fort Riley in Sept. of 2001. "Just like everybody else when somebody told you the news your feeling is numbness. We can't believe this is happening, is this really happening? "Employees were able to watch some of the developments on television. "To this day brings some pretty bad memories."

Clark remembers on Sept. 11, 2001 she had gone off-post for an appointment and when she tried to return to the installation there was a long line of vehicles waiting to enter Fort Riley and there was another long line of people leaving. One of her co-workers told her from his car to turn around because they were sending them home.

Traffic backups occurred in the days after the terrorist attacks for those motorists trying to access the installation. "I try to come to work about the same time but after your first day of coming back you did get hit with lines that just went down the highway and nobody really knew what was going on so the only thing that they could actually do was search each and every car. This went on for some time, so when you roll on the post or any base you just have to roll with the punches so to speak. "

In addition to a closed versus open post Clark noted that 9/11 changed the installation into one with more security, which is still needed today. Smith added that there is also the see something say something training, while Clark felt that we are more aware of terrorism today.

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will host a 9/11 commemoration ceremony on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Global War on Terrorism monument, which is located on the east side of Calvary Parade Field.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Flags have been ordered to be flown half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says in accordance with Executive Order #20-30, she has ordered that flags throughout the state be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sept. 11, 2021, in honor of those that lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 20 years ago.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of a tragedy that shook our country to its core, taking the lives of so many of our fellow countrymen and women,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Today we honor our friends, family members, and first responders who lost their lives on this infamous day. Governor orders flags to be flown at half staff Saturday

MANHATTAN, KAN. –&nbsp;A man and woman have been arrested on a warrant in connection to multiple sex crimes reported to have occurred in Manhattan in August 2021, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

On August 8, 2021, officers filed a report for rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, indecent solicitation of a child, criminal threat and providing alcohol to minors.

Vincent Fontaine Meeks Jr., 31, and Sandra Maxine Meeks, 55, both from Manhattan were arrested late this afternoon. Vincent was arrested for rape, three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, three counts of solicitation of a child, criminal threat, unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol and furnishing alcohol to minors. Sandra was arrested for two counts of unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol.

Vincent is confined in the Riley County Jail a total bond of $250,000. Sandra was issued a total bond of $2,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report.

At their July 8th meeting, the C.L. Hoover Opera House Board of Directors received the feasibility study of adding the property at 131 West 7th to the Opera House Complex. The study was prepared and submitted by architect Bruce McMillan. They have announced that the Board voted unanimously to move forward with the project

This proposed expansion offers many benefits to patrons and the community. The additional space will allow for the expansion in the Opera House after-school educational program. Two new rehearsal areas would be created. The additional space will be used to make the Opera House Fine Arts Academy a reality.

Street front offices for the Junction City Little Theater and the Junction City Arts Council are included as a part of this project. A dedicated studio space would be created for art classes. The addition of this property would also allow the reconfiguring of existing Opera House spaces, creating dressing rooms much closer to the stage, a larger catering kitchen and a “green room” for performers waiting to go on stage.

At their September 9th meeting the Opera House Board voted to purchase the building at 131 W. 7th from Sheila Burdette and have signed a contract to that effect. The feasibility study estimates the cost of renovation at about 1.75 million dollars. While this will be done in cooperation with the City of Junction City, the Opera House Board is not seeking tax dollars for the project.
