MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another gun theft in Manhattan.

Just after 8a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1400 block of Chase Pl. in Manhattan.

A 23-year-old man reported a 42-year-old woman suspect stole his Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun around six months ago. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $500.

RCPD investigates reported shotgun theft

Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Geary County native, William "Bill" Caspar, 57,&nbsp; was among those killed as he worked at the World Trade Center.

Before going to work in New York City Caspar had worked at the Central National Bank in Junction City. Retired Bank President Robert Munson noted that Caspar grew up on a family farm in Geary County. "Went to the Air Force after college and then came back to Junction City and Bill and I worked together at Central National Bank for a number of years." They worked on setting up the Bank's first in-house computer system.

Munson came to know Caspar very well during the time that they worked together. "He was a wonderful person, a devout Catholic who took his faith seriously, a very patriotic person for sure."

Caspar also served on the Metropolitan Planning Commission during his time in Junction City.&nbsp;

Munson remembered that Caspar worked in data processing at the World Trade Center for a large multi-national global insurance agency at the time of the terrorist attack. "As I understand it was in the north tower on the 100th floor when the first plane hit. " When he learned that Caspar was in the World Trade Center Munson noted that he "was just stunned, saddened beyond belief."&nbsp;

For the past 20 years there has been a memorial display in honor of Caspar in the Junction City Municipal Building.

The funds will help provide annual support for the Milford school, Parks &amp; Recreation, Open Door, Geary County Food Pantry, Glasses for Children in need, the Kansas Lions Foundation , Milford Church and other community projects.

USD 475 has announced that on Oct. 9 the doors of the school will be opened for the public to experience. The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled from 10 - 10:30 a.m. and student-led tours will follow.&nbsp;

Attendees will also hear from state and local leaders plus district representatives.

Banners honoring veterans will be hung throughout the downtown area in Junction City. Craig Bender, Military Affairs Director said this program began last year where citizens can purchase a veteran's banner. "Last year 17 banners bearing the likeness of a veteran were put up and Bender hopes to put up 50 this year. "You can go to our web site, reach out to me, get a picture, supply the money, get them made and put up."

New banners or one that was put up in 2020 can be used. "The idea is to line all of Washington and then once Washington is done go down 6th, go down Chestnut, go down Grant. " The banners will be up as early as Sept.15 but they can be hung later, and they will be up until about a week after Veteran's Day.

MAC will move ahead with year two of a banner program

HERINGTON, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the police chief and an assistant chief in Herington have been accused of trespassing. 

The KBI announced Wednesday that Chief John Matula and assistant Chief Curtis Tyra have been issued summons to appear in Dickinson County District Court. Both men are charged with criminal trespass. Matula is also charged with criminal damage to property. 

The charges are misdemeanors. The KBI says the two men are accused of forcing their way into a home on May 18 without a search warrant. James Brun, an attorney from Overland Park, has been appointed special prosecutor in the case. Matula announced his resignation on Thursday.

The Fallen Hero run allows soldiers, families and community supporters to honor and remember military members who've made the ultimate sacrifice in support and defense of the United States.

The monument is a small replica of the World Trade Center Twin Towers on a Pentagon-shaped base. It bears the names of Fort Riley Soldiers who have given their lives in the defense of our nation during the Global War on Terrorism.&nbsp;

Col. Will McKannay, Fort riley Garrison Commander, will speak at the event, which includes a wreath-laying, a three-volley salute fired by an honor guard and "Taps." First responders from Junction City and Manhattan will join Fort riley Directorate of Emergency Services professionals in the commemoration. McKannay and Command Sgt. Major Timothy Speichert, U.S. Army Garrison Command Sgt. Major, will place a wreath at the base of the monument in honor of those who have died in the Global War on Terrorism.&nbsp;

CHAPMAN - The Chapman USD 473 Board of Education has placed Jerry Hodson, district superintendent, on administrative leave.

According to minutes from the special meeting on Tuesday, the board met in multiple executive sessions before voting unanimously to place Hodson on paid administrative leave until further notice.

Additionally, the board unanimously voted to name Chapman High School Principal Kevin Suther as interim superintendent.

Evergy Kansas Center has acquired a building at 203 East Ash Street for a proposed new service center and storage of utility poles. City Manager Allen Dinkel said the company will now have a crew there.

The site, which will have to be rezoned, matches the zoning of a nearby substation. "What it's going to mean is I think is Evergy will have crews stationed here now so when there's outages on the Evergy side of electricity in our community I think service will be a lot faster, which will be good for everybody." Utility poles and transformers can also be stored there.

The City Commission has given approval.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An annual fundraiser for the Geary County Historical Society, is on tap Sunday, Sept. 19. The Ice Cream Social will be held from 3-6 p.m. on the Historical Museum grounds at 530 North Adams. In addition to ice cream numerous other food items ranging from pies and cakes to hot dogs and pickles will be sold. There will also be entertainment during the event.

The frozen treat stand in Junction City made a donation to JCHS Athletics, allowing all students in the district to attend the home-opener match against Washburn Rural at no cost.&nbsp;

The junior varsity contest begins at 4:30 p.m., with varsity to kick off at 6:15 p.m. at Al Simpler Stadium.&nbsp;

Free admission to JCHS boys soccer match on Thursday

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities investigating a pedestrian accident that injured a 7-year-old Manhattan boy released additional information Thursday.

Just after 8a.m. Wednesday, officers responded the intersection of Tuttle Cove Road and Terrea Heights Drive in n Manhattan.

At the scene, first responders found a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Andrew Spencer Tomb III, 78, of Manhattan had hit Tommy Hagadorn-Brecken, 7, of Manhattan while the boy was crossing the roadway.

EMS transported Hagadorn-Brecken to Via Christi then Life Star transferred him to Stormont Vail by for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; He is a student at&nbsp;Bergman Elementary School.&nbsp; Authorities had no updated&nbsp; information on his condition early Thursday.

RCPD: Manhattan boy was crossing street when struck by car

Geary Community Hospital reported 15 patients were being treated at the facility on Wednesday. Four of them were COVID-19 patients, with one vaccinated for the coronavirus and three unvaccinated.&nbsp;

Two of those being treated for COVID-19 were in the intensive care unit and one was on a ventilator.

One state group sees increase of kids who have not previously sought treatment

MANHATTAN – Even as many parts of society begin to return to near normal routines, mental health specialists continue to monitor how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the mental health of Americans.&nbsp;

Elaine Johannes,&nbsp;the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, is especially interested in how teenagers are adjusting to new rules and ways of doing things.&nbsp;

“Many of us have had kids at home and we’ve raised some teenagers into adulthood and we understand what happens in that developmental stage where maybe the young person is not sure of their identity, not sure of how well they’re performing compared to peers, and maybe they’re not comfortable in their own skin because they’re growing so quickly – and that all creates anxiety,” Johannes said.&nbsp;

In the first few months of the pandemic, the&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/about/research/#!healthy-living" target="_blank">National 4-H Council commissioned a survey</a>&nbsp;that concluded that more than 7 in 10 kids between the ages of 13-19 are struggling with their mental health.&nbsp;

Those numbers have seemingly not gotten better in the year since, as the global pandemic creeps toward two years of changed routines.&nbsp;

James Roberson, the vice president of programs and innovation for KVC Hospitals -- a system that provides children’s psychiatric treatment at facilities in Kansas City, Wichita and Hays – said his organization is seeing an increase of kids who have never sought treatment for mental health previously.&nbsp;

“The scary part is what we know about mental health,” he said. “It’s a little different from physical health because we don’t just look at the organic. We look at the context of the child in their environment, and the pandemic has really changed all of their environments.”&nbsp;

Roberson said support groups like KVC are working to become more visible in communities, break down the stigma of mental illness and work directly with families.&nbsp;

“I have not met a family yet that has regretted having their child engage in therapy,” he said. “The opportunity to get your child in front of a professional who can do an assessment and tell you that everything is okay, keep doing what you’re doing -- or to let you know that what they’re feeling is clinical – I think that is really valuable.”&nbsp;

Johannes said parents are key to their child’s mental well-being.&nbsp;

“It’s really up to the adults to understand their role in modeling, coping, talking about and helping the child to become resilient,” she said. “It’s the adults that can look for positive behaviors that they can support.”&nbsp;

Roberson added: “You don’t have to sit back and say, ‘is my child resilient or not resilient?’ No matter how old your child is, they’re actively developing resilience. If you’re present in their lives and you are helping them navigate the problems that they’re facing at school or in relationships…every time you help them solve problems, you’re building their resilience.”&nbsp;

Johannes said K-State Research and Extension is working to provide a mental health curriculum to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;Clubs that is a self-guided study on how children can recognize behavioral health in themselves.&nbsp;

<h2>One state group sees increase of kids who have not previously sought treatment</h2>MANHATTAN – Even as many parts of society begin to return to near normal routines, mental health specialists continue to monitor how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the mental health of Americans.&nbsp;Elaine Johannes,&nbsp;the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, is especially interested in how teenagers are adjusting to new rules and ways of doing things.&nbsp;“Many of us have had kids at home and we’ve raised some teenagers into adulthood and we understand what happens in that developmental stage where maybe the young person is not sure of their identity, not sure of how well they’re performing compared to peers, and maybe they’re not comfortable in their own skin because they’re growing so quickly – and that all creates anxiety,” Johannes said.&nbsp;In the first few months of the pandemic, the&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/about/research/#!healthy-living" target="_blank">National 4-H Council commissioned a survey</a>&nbsp;that concluded that more than 7 in 10 kids between the ages of 13-19 are struggling with their mental health.&nbsp;Those numbers have seemingly not gotten better in the year since, as the global pandemic creeps toward two years of changed routines.&nbsp;James Roberson, the vice president of programs and innovation for KVC Hospitals -- a system that provides children’s psychiatric treatment at facilities in Kansas City, Wichita and Hays – said his organization is seeing an increase of kids who have never sought treatment for mental health previously.&nbsp;“The scary part is what we know about mental health,” he said. “It’s a little different from physical health because we don’t just look at the organic. We look at the context of the child in their environment, and the pandemic has really changed all of their environments.”&nbsp;Roberson said support groups like KVC are working to become more visible in communities, break down the stigma of mental illness and work directly with families.&nbsp;“I have not met a family yet that has regretted having their child engage in therapy,” he said. “The opportunity to get your child in front of a professional who can do an assessment and tell you that everything is okay, keep doing what you’re doing -- or to let you know that what they’re feeling is clinical – I think that is really valuable.”&nbsp;Johannes said parents are key to their child’s mental well-being.&nbsp;“It’s really up to the adults to understand their role in modeling, coping, talking about and helping the child to become resilient,” she said. “It’s the adults that can look for positive behaviors that they can support.”&nbsp;Roberson added: “You don’t have to sit back and say, ‘is my child resilient or not resilient?’ No matter how old your child is, they’re actively developing resilience. If you’re present in their lives and you are helping them navigate the problems that they’re facing at school or in relationships…every time you help them solve problems, you’re building their resilience.”&nbsp;Johannes said K-State Research and Extension is working to provide a mental health curriculum to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;Clubs that is a self-guided study on how children can recognize behavioral health in themselves.&nbsp;KVC Hospitals also is&nbsp;<a href="https://hospitals.kvc.org/freeceus/" target="_blank">hosting a free, three-part webinar series</a>&nbsp;beginning Sept. 13 to help families recognize and cope with mental health issues. Geary USD 475 Board of Education members have approved a salary proposal for employees.

There will be a 2020-2021 one-time bonus of 2.75% for all classified and administrative employees, a total average raise of 3.05% for classified employees that includes step movement, longevity and base increase, plus a three percent increase in salary for administrators.

There will be a $750 COVID appreciation stipend for notification of wage and contract employees, with this one-time stipend occurring Oct. 1st. The guidelines for the stipend are $750 for full-time employees who work at least 30 hours per week, $500 for KPERS eligible working 17.5 to 30 hours per week, and $250 for part-time employees working 17.5 hours per week.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - A unique Manhattan eatery celebrated its first birthday recently, and considering the times, that's a pretty special milestone.&nbsp;

Guilty Biscuit, a fast-casual-style restaurant on Manhattan's west side offers biscuits, biscuit sandwiches, and several other unique cuisine options that throw a twist in a traditional breakfast staple.&nbsp;

"It's really, kind of quietly become something that I'm really unbelievably proud of," said Operator Evan Grier. "The creation of the whole concept of Guilty biscuit was done absolutely the wrong way, from what you would normally want to do when you're starting up a brand."

According to Grier, he and his colleagues cooked up Guilty Biscuit on a whim during the summer of 2020, and after just a few short weeks were baking up biscuits.&nbsp;

"There wasn't a lot of market research, there wasn't a lot of due diligence, there wasn't a lot of time to just think and stew on all the small decisions and details that need to go in to having a successful restaurant brand," said Grier. "We, and I, believed and trusted in our team to be able to pull that off on the fly and they did."

Grier believes he works with the best operations team in town, and with Guilty's success being evidence to that, he's confident in what lies ahead for the business, even if there's still some people struggling to wrap their head around having biscuits for every meal and not just breakfast, myself included.

"The neat thing about Guilty Biscuit is that the Guilty Biscuit brand isn't fully cooked," said Grier with a smirk. "So we still get to play and have fun inside the framework of&nbsp; the name Guilty biscuit, but I would encourage our patrons and fans in the community to continue to look and watch what we're doing there because that's really where we get to have some fun and play a little bit."

Even if you're not a "Biscuit-lover," Guilty offers plenty of substitutes, like buns instead.&nbsp;

Grier also added that although Guilty biscuit isn't really a breakfast-style restaurant, they just might be exploring an earlier opening on weekends for fans who want biscuits earlier in the day.&nbsp;

"We've listened to our customers, we hear you, we just need to get staffed up and we'll start focusing on some breakfast hours on the weekends and see how it goes," said Grier.

Guilty Biscuit looks back on its wild first year in MHK

DICKINSON COUNTY&nbsp;-&nbsp;Today, the Police Chief and Assistant Police Chief of the Herington Police Department were served summonses following an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), according to a media release from the agancy.On Wednesday, Sept. 8, John V. Matula, 36, the Herington Police Chief, was ordered to appear in Dickinson County District Court for alleged criminal damage to property and criminal trespass.Also ordered to appear in Dickinson County District Court was Curtis M. Tyra, 43, the Herington Assistant Chief, for alleged criminal trespass.The suspected crimes are misdemeanors, and are believed to have occurred on May 18, 2021 related to Matula and Tyra forcing entry into a residence without a search warrant.

Geary USD 475 was the first district in Kansas to implement the pilot of the Military Child Education Coalition's Purple Star School Program within its schools. There was a one-year anniversary recognition&nbsp; of the program during the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

This program helps schools “respond to the educational and social-emotional challenges military-connected children face during their transition to a new school,” according to the MCEC’s website, and keeps military-affiliated students “on track to be college, workforce, and life-ready.” Geary County will continue to report its results to state leaders throughout the process.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a jewelry theft in Riley County.

Just after 2p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 200 block of S. Erpelding Avenue in Leonardville, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 68-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect stole a necklace with an estimated value of approximately $850. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Police responded to the call just after 8a.m.. at the intersection of Tuttle Cove and Terra Heights Drive.

EMS transported the 7-year-old boy to Via Christi in Manhattan. Lifestar then airlifted the boy to&nbsp;Stormont Vail&nbsp;in Topeka.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police had no update on the child's condition just after 10:30a.m.&nbsp;
