Dr. Steve and Colleen Hodes, Andover, Kansas, have given a gift to name the deanship in Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. This is the third named deanship at K-State and the fourth deanship named of all 33 American Veterinary Medical Association accredited Colleges of Veterinary Medicine.

The Hodeses’ gift to name the Hodes Family Deanship in the College of Veterinary Medicine is transformational for the college and future veterinarians. One key initiative it will support is to provide veterinary students with business education, investing in their success as veterinary practice owners.&nbsp;

“Dr. Steve Hodes is a roll-up-your-sleeves, can-do veterinarian with a boundless work ethic.&nbsp;He attained prominent success in business and demonstrates unmatched commitment to mentoring prospective veterinarians,” said Dr. Bonnie Rush, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “This gift advances our goals in business education/entrepreneurship and transforms our ability to produce practice-ready veterinarians. The College of Veterinary Medicine recognizes the tremendous responsibility to honor this gift in the image inspired by Dr. and Mrs. Hodes.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Steve Hodes graduated from K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. Colleen Hodes earned her physical education degree from K-State in 1978. They both serve on the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees. Soon after graduating from K-State, Dr. Hodes established the Hodes Veterinary Group and Mobile Veterinary Service in Mine Hill, New Jersey, which grew into a practice with eight veterinarians serving both large and small animals. In 2005, Dr. Hodes received the Alumni Recognition Award from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The award recognized his time and effort devoted to advancing veterinary medicine, and for being an exemplary role model for future veterinarians. The Hodeses have been generous donors to the college, creating a professorship in small animal medicine in 2014, investing in the Equine Performance Testing Center, and providing valuable mentoring to countless veterinary students.

“Kansas State University offered me the opportunity to be a veterinarian. This career has been and continues to be extraordinary. I truly have never gone to a ‘day of work,’” said Dr. Hodes. “Dr. Rush told me that business management will be offered to veterinary students. This is so important as we want those students, as their career evolves at taking care of animals, to simultaneously be providing a great life and future for their families and coworkers. My entire family has benefited from my career and participated in it, so as a family, we are happy to make this investment in K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.”

The Hodeses’ passion for K-State and the veterinary profession extended to their children. Two of their three children attended K-State. Their son, Dr. Brian Hodes, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jessica (Harrison) Hodes, both received their veterinary degrees from K-State in 2011. The Hodes’ daughter, Alexa Hodes Hewitt, earned her journalism and mass communications degree from K-State in 2010. Alexa’s husband, Matthew Hewitt, graduated from K-State in 2009 with a degree in accounting. Their son, Tim Hodes, studied business at the University of Michigan, and his wife Kari Friedlander Hodes went to Indiana University.

The K-State College of Veterinary Medicine will host a dedication event to celebrate this tremendous gift on Wednesday, April 6, at the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Auditorium located between the Veterinary Health Center in Mosier Hall and the College of Veterinary Medicine in Trotter Hall. High fire danger anticipated Tuesday afternoon

GEARY COUNTY, Kan. – When the pandemic initially struck Kansas in March of 2020, the Geary County Health Department and Geary County Schools began the years-long collaboration to fight COVID-19 within the community.

The initial response was immediate, with Geary County Schools becoming one of the first districts in the state to stop in-person learning, according to Geary County Health Department Interim Director Charles Martinez.

“The Kansas Department of Health and Environment [KDHE] has said this helped prevent the spread so quickly over here,” Martinez said. “That gave more time for the hospital to prepare to accept patients.”

Since the beginning, now almost two years ago, the health department and district have continued to work together, communicating on a regular basis to continue to find ways to combat COVID-19, including vaccination clinics. With these clinics, hundreds of district staff and students were able to receive vaccines.

“We are somewhat leading the charge in the state as far as how it should be done and how it’s been done,” Geary County Schools COVID-19 Response Coordinator Richard Rook said when referencing his conversations with KDHE representatives. “I think the district has done a great job with the help of the health department. I don’t think we’d be where we are without that collaboration.”

The health department and district plan to continue to work together to do whatever is necessary to protect the people of Geary County. Martinez and Rook encourage community members to wear masks, receive the COVID-19 vaccine and stay home if they are not feeling well.

“As long as it’s here we’ve got to keep working together,” Rook said. “The overall goal is to keep these doors open and these kids safe, and I think we’re doing a pretty good job of that.”

According to a release from Fort Riley participants will be able to choose from many sessions over the two-day event with titles like “PCS the RIGHT Way,” “Keys to Financial Success,” “Parenting Teens,” “Home Buying Basics,” “Self-healing through Yoga,” and “Zumba!” Other sessions will cover time management, stress management, nutrition, investing, and more.

There will also be a hiring fair Tuesday afternoon, from 1 – 4 p.m. The symposium is open to all Department of Defense ID cardholders.

There is interest in possibly developing a future sports complex at that location. "I think there may be a counter put out there to keep some for different buildings for USD ( 475 ).

Dinkel said after conversations with city staff and with businessman Kendall Schoenrock who initially spearheaded the project, they do not believe that is a good move for the city, "and probably would not be in favor of that."

The school district currently controls the property but there have been talks with the city about the possible purchase of the site by the city for $1 once demolition work has been completed on some of the existing facilities at the site.

I can’t remember if I was helping check momma cows during calving season or chopping ice during a spell of cold weather when I was inspired to do something I shouldn’t. I do know it was about this time of year when my grandfather’s storytelling found a set of eager ears and launched a journey that would be completed a few weeks later, just about the time spring break rolled around. I was in high school, and I can still envision the scene in my grandfather’s pickup truck as he told me about the time he tried to make wine when he was about my age. From my hazy recollection, the gist of the story was he poured some yeast into a bottle of grape juice and then stuffed a cork in the neck and stowed the brew away inside his closet. Eventually, he forgot about the science experiment fermenting somewhere amongst his blue jeans and boots. The days turned into weeks before there was a sudden reckoning as the cork’s grip on the glass was overcome by a buildup of carbon dioxide and shot out, followed by the rest of the bottle’s contents. “I got in a decent amount of trouble for ruining my clothes,” my grandfather told me. “But my closet sure smelled good for a long time.” Even while I was laughing at the punchline, my mind was forming a plan to conduct my own experiment. I even had the benefit of knowing a cork shouldn’t be used. I also took satisfaction in the apparent loophole my grandfather helped me see. While I was too young to buy alcohol, there was no such prohibition on sourcing all of the necessary ingredients. It didn’t take long to recruit a friend to help complete this small act of rebellion. We soon abandoned our initial plan to create our own vintage with freshly crushed grapes in favor of a couple bottles of juice off a shelf, a sack of sugar and some yeast. These supplies were artfully split between two different shopping carts so as to avoid raising any suspicions of their intended use. We retreated to the cover of my friend’s kitchen to begin mixing the elixir, an act we were old enough to know was wrong, but we were young enough to do it anyway. We spooned in sugar and added bread yeast before stretching balloons over the lips of each bottle. Then we waited. Periodically checking the concoction over the next few weeks provided a great view of chemistry in action. The yeast consumed the sugar producing enough carbon dioxide to fill the balloon, which was evidence our plan was working. When the rubber orbs started to deflate a few weeks later, it was finally time to test our winemaking skills. We were naïve enough to hope we’d brewed something amazing. We would have settled for something that was merely drinkable. Our sights were set way too high. While the liquid gave off an almost pleasant aroma as we strained it through coffee filters, the initial sip was overpowering. So much so that I had a much more intimate understanding of what Roger Miller was singing about in “Chug-a-Lug”. We didn’t make it much beyond the initial tasting before abandoning the idea of drinking our wine. I’m sure it could have been repurposed to strip varnish or a ground clearing herbicide, though. The only buzz I received from the wine was the bit of wisdom that my grandfather was lucky to have forgotten that bottle in his closet. &nbsp;

GEARY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

Just after 11:30p.m. Sunday, Geary County sheriff’s deputies booked a suspect identified as Jeremiah Tyrell Ballance, 24, of Jacksonville, North Carolina. into the Geary County Detention Center, according to online jail records.

Ballance is being held on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child; aggravated indecent solicitation of a child; and aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim.

He is being held on a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Authorities arrest suspect for alleged child sex crimes

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged arson involving an 11-year-old boy.

On Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated arson in the 2317 block&nbsp; Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.. RC McGraws Tavern reported an 11-year-old suspect started a fire in the bathroom of RC McGraws Blue Hills Room.&nbsp;

The single-story bar and grill was occupied at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and everyone evacuated safely. Fire loss is estimated at $5000 to the structure and $7000 to the contents. The owner is listed as RLD Properties LLC of Summerfield, Kansas.

MANHATTAN— Investigators with the Manhattan fire department along with Riley County Police Department determined the cause of the fire just after 11:30a.m. Sunday at RC McGraws 2317 Tuttle Creek Boulevard to be intentional, according to&nbsp;Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes.

Just after 11:30a.m. Sunday, fire crews were dispatched t0&nbsp;RC McGraws, 2317 Tuttle Creek Boulevard for a report of fire, according to a media release.&nbsp;

Upon arrival, crews found a small fire that had been partially extinguished.&nbsp; The remaining fire was extinguished within five minutes of arrival and all incoming crews were downgraded to non-emergent to assist with checking for extension and to assist with ventilating the structure. The building, a single-story bar and grill was occupied at the time of the fire.&nbsp; There were no injuries and everyone evacuated safely.&nbsp;Fire loss is estimated at $5000 to the structure and $7000 to the contents. Legislators air their views on issues Saturday in Junction City

MANHATTAN—Kansas State University is encouraging students affected by the second shooting in the Aggieville district in less than two months to get counseling.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, three officers from RCPD were working in the police substation in Aggieville when they heard gunshots, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

 The officers immediately responded&nbsp;outside a bar near 12th&nbsp;and Moro Street and they found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid. The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley who died.

The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. .

On December 12, two 24-year-old men were injured during gunfire at Tate's Bar, 1109 Moro in Aggieville.

There is an effort to develop a JC statue that can tell&nbsp; the Junction City story for downtown. It's a project undertaken by a Main Street program subcommittee. 

The Interim Director for Main Street, Jerry Lonergan, said there would be about 10 statues at various locations in the downtown area. "We hope like a business will adopt them and fund the artist rendition of the work. The committee will actually approve the design. "

Lonergan also noted that KSU-Salina students will make the mold and pour ten statues for the project.&nbsp;

Emerging scholars can submit a presentation abstract as a featured speaker during the annual D-Day Commemorative Symposium. The Eisenhower, Roosevelt and Truman Presidential Libraries are seeking submissions from emerging scholars to be a featured speaker during a virtual symposium the first week of June. The symposium will focus on specialized topics related to the Allied effort in World War II.

The symposium seeks to examine the reporting of the war from&nbsp; the front, news of home to those fighting and war propaganda that helped unite the two.&nbsp;

Each program is scheduled for one hour. The guest speaker will present their topic for approximately 40 minutes and then there will be questions at the end. Each program wraps up with a Scholar Spotlight where you can get to know more about each of the up and coming scholars.

MARION COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Sunday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Honda Accord driven by Jennifer Ann&nbsp;Kirkpatrick, 47, Chapman, was southbound&nbsp; on Kansas 15 one half mile south of U.S.56.

The Honda struck a pedestrian identified as 24-year-old Yueyang&nbsp;Jiang, of Andover, was stationary in the road near a vehicle illegally parked in the roadway, according to the KHP. The Honda immediately pulled off to side of road.

EMS transported Jiang to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp;Kirkpatrick was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Run for the Wall returns in 2022. The cross country motorcycle ride begins in California and makes Junction City one of the overnight stopping points as riders travel across the country to Washington D.C.

The riders will arrive in Junction City on May 22nd. Planners for the event noted that about 4:45 p.m. volunteers will line both sides of Washington Street with 300 U.S.&nbsp; flags. When the riders arrive at Heritage Park there will be a brief ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and dinner will then be served to the riders at the Junction City Eagles Lodge at 203 East 10th Street.

The morning of May 23rd breakfast will be provided to the riders at the Eagles Lodge and they will then depart Junction City and continue on their trip at 8 a.m.

The purpose of Run for the Wall is to promote healing among all veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action, to honor the memory of those Killed in Action from all wards, and to support military personnel all over the world.

Kansas I-70 Association establishes a scholarship program

RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred after a man was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Manhattan, according to a media release from the KBI.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, three officers from RCPD were working in the police substation in Aggieville when they heard gunshots. The officers immediately responded in the direction of the gunfire.

When they arrived outside a bar near 12th&nbsp;and Moro St., they found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid. The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley.

Preliminary information indicates that as the armed suspect fled, he turned the corner onto 12th&nbsp;St. During the foot chase, one of the RCPD officers fired two rounds at the suspect, striking him in the leg, and causing him to stop part way down the block, between Moro Street and Laramie Street. Officers secured the handgun and provided medical assistance. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. Montgomery is currently in fair and stable condition. Wardi was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation suggests that earlier Friday night Wardi and Montgomery patronized the same bar in Aggieville. Later, while visiting outside in separate groups of friends, they engaged in a verbal altercation. At that time witnesses say Montgomery pulled out a gun and shot Wardi.

Police ID homicide victim, suspect in officer-shooting in Aggieville

RENO COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 4p.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Mustang driven by Matthew H. Monroe, 17, Nickerson, was southbound on Kansas 14 three miles south of Nickerson. 

When traffic was slowing down, the Ford rear-ended a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Alexander K. Dennis, 30, Junction City.&nbsp; The impact forced the Mitsubishi to enter into the northbound lanes.&nbsp;

A northbound 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by Clarence R. Messick, 60, Saint John, struck the Mitsubishi.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Mitsubishi then struck the trailer of a 2009 Chevy Suburban driven by Jeffery W. Mehl, 52, Hutchinson.

After impact, the semi continued north, jackknifed on the west shoulder and struck a 2022 Ram truck driven by Casey D. Gamble, 38, Hutchinson.

EMS transported Dennis and Messick to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where Dennis was pronounced dead. A passenger in the Mitsubishi 13-year-old Teagan Lomax of South Hutchison, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 Monroe, Mehl, 5 passengers in the Chevy and Gamble were not injured. The occupants of the Mitsubishi were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Groundbreaking for a new 81,000 square foot elementary school at 4720 Leonard Avenue on Fort Riley will be held March 4th at 1 p.m. This will be a 390 student capacity school that will be built on the same land where Jefferson Elementary School was previously located.&nbsp;

According to a release from Geary USD 475 the project will be a collaborative effort between the district, Fort Riley, Hutton Construction and SJCF Architecture. The school will serve prekindergarten through fifth-grade students.

Those attending the event March 4th will hear from state, local and military leaders, district representatives and see student performances along with the groundbreaking.

The menu will include waffles, pancakes, sausage and homemade ice cream. The cost will be $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. Reservations are not required.
