First day of school will occur at the new JCHS

There was a bomb threat at Spring Valley Elementary School on&nbsp; the morning of Aug. 11 but fortunately a bomb was never found and no one was injured. But since there have been social media concerns expressed about the JCPD response to the incident. Tuesday police and school district administrators met for an after action review.

Capt. Cory Odell, noted that an unsubstantiated threat about a bomb came in from the school district at approximately 7:34 a.m. and dispatchers contacted school resource officers who just preparing to come to work. "Due to the way that the information came in it was not a lights-sirens run so it was not a 30-second response like people anticipate just because of morning traffic going all the way from the east side of town to where we're at all the way to the west side of town where the school's located. "

JCPD officers did not arrive on scene until about 8:04 a.m. nearly 30-minutes later. JC Post asked about the 30 minutes it took to respond. "He was just finishing up getting ready to come in to work. He had to get all of his work stuff together and get loaded into his vehicle, " said Odell. Police Chief John Lamb pointed out that at time it was still an unsubstantiated threat. "Nobody had called in. This was based on a group meet message that was put out by the school district telling staff to check your areas. If you see anything out of sorts report to us. It was still perceived by them as a low threat so we weren't going to endanger the community more by trying to get over there by lights and sirens."

Lamb said a 911 call came in shortly after receiving the group meet text and a second SRO, school resource officer, was sent to the school on the west side of Junction City. Lamb said some sheriff's department personnel were also at the school because they happened to be dropping off their children.&nbsp;

Odell said after 8:04 police linked up with school officials and did an immediate walk-through of the building and nothing seemed out of place. School staff had also conducted an earlier walk through and nothing seemed out of place. Lamb commented that eventually four walk-throughs were done by police or school personnel. "A lot of people think the kids were evacuated. The kids were never allowed in the school. School staff had made the decision I am not going to put the kids in school and then run the chance of possibly evacuating them which we understand, so the kids were never allowed in school, they were just taken to a safe distance away and cared for away from the school.

Police said the students were allowed into the school about 10:27 a.m. It was the first day of the new school year.

Some improvements will be made. Lamb said police have assessed their policies and there are some things that have been identified where changes need to be made. "Working with the school board comparing their policy to ours, make sure that policy matches practice and that we're working together and everybody understands everybody's role as we respond. " Lamb said a committee will review it to make sure the policy is compliant with accreditation standards, will identify best practices in the profession, and what works well with not just schools but also other large facilities. While not identifying specific changes now, Lamb did confirm there will be some to make it more clear on response so entities can understand the police role and what to expect.

Lamb also stated, "There are some things that we have identified that we can improve on. Just like I said at the after action report with the school who we're working closely with, there were some ah-ha moments in that. No situation like this is ever going to be perfect. There's no cookie cutter response to any situation in law enforcement. " Lamb also added, "So what you do is remain fluid, calm." He commented that the main goal is to protect the students and the staff, and the chief added that all agencies were combined in that effort.

Lamb noted that he wants to ensure communication between the JCPD and school district is strong, they want to build on it, identify each other's roles so next time it will run a lot smoother. The goal is to strive to do better in the future.&nbsp;

After action review is conducted on recent school bomb threat

Geary Community Hospital employees need support and appreciation. That has caught the attention of hospital officials, including the chairman of the Board of trustees, Cecil Aska. He issued a statement at the Board's meeting Tuesday to the GCH family&nbsp; thanking them for their dedication. "As we battle COVID-19 your hard work and sacrifice does not go unnoticed. " Aska told them that they are making a difference in the lives of patients and in the community. He noted that they are a great, caring staff. "The main thing is that we do appreciate their hard work, going the extra step in their constant and care of patients."

Ashley King, Director of Communications, recently announced a new Adopt a Front Line Department where you can provide frontline heroes at GCH with lunch, dinner or snacks. She told the Trustees, "Frontline staff are tired and need a little love." She noted that a lot of businesses are buying them lunch.

It's not final right now but King noted there could possibly be efforts by the Ministerial Alliance to surround Geary Community Hospital for a prayer for staff, and possibly the Junction City High School Marching Band playing at GCH as hospital staff enter and exit.

She remembered a few years ago when police appreciated the support that they received from the community during a difficult time for police members in various locations across the country.

Employee support is a focus for Hospital officials

Manhattan— Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire at a home in Manhattan.

Just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday,&nbsp; the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at a home at 1310 Fremont Street, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes.

Upon arrival, crews found a large single-family home with fire showing from the rear. 

The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained in just over 10 minutes. 

The occupants were home at the time of the fire and were able to exit the structure prior to the fire department's arrival.&nbsp; Crews were able to locate and remove an uninjured dog in the home.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp; The building is a 2 1/2 story single-family residence. &nbsp; Loss is estimated at $30,000 to contents and $50,000 to the structure. The owners are listed as James and Patricia Smith of the same address. The house next door located at 1314 Fremont Street had an estimated $1000 damage to the exterior from the fire.&nbsp;

$80,000 damage after house fire in Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State football fans will have to search a little harder for beer and alcohol during football games this season. A year after allowing beer and wine sales throughout Bill Snyder Family Stadium, the university says it will return to a previous practice of limiting alcohol sales to specific areas. 

Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor said 60% of fans who answered a survey said they preferred limited beer sales and combined exit/re-entry over beer sales at every concession stand and no re-entry. The university said it will open a third beer garden at the stadium this season.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Robby's Famous Cheesecake announced on Facebook that it will soon be opening a location in Aggieville.&nbsp;

Robby's already has locations in Salina and Junction City, and is available to order online, but the addition of a Manhattan storefront certainly adds to the demand that's already existed for "The World's Best Cheesecake."

The 'World's Best Cheesecake' to add Aggieville location

CALLAWAY COUNTY —A Junction City woman was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Monday in Callaway County Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Dodge Journey driven by Dewonna Goodridge, 55, Junction City, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of the Hatton exit.

One tire came off the rim and caused the SUV to exit the road and strike several trees. Callaway County EMS transported Goodridge to University Hospital in Columbia. She was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

K-State announces football game day improvements for 2021 season

Geary County commissioners have decided to offer employees an incentive for getting a COVID-19 shot. Trish Giordano, Commission Chair, said some other counties were taking this action. "So we thought it would be a good incentivization to have our employees vaccinated. "

Each employee that has been vaccinated and others that get vaccinated by the end of September will receive $100. Those funds will come from federal American Recovery Plan money received by the county. The goal is to get more employees vaccinated and keep COVID numbers down.

Forms encourage youth to document, reflect on activities&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – There’s an old saying that wonders if a tree falls in a forest, but nobody was there to see it…did it really fall?&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;youth development specialist Amy Sollock hopes the state’s youth don’t have to ponder that same conundrum. That’s one reason why she touts the state’s record-keeping forms to all 4-H youth.&nbsp;

“We find immense value in any project-based learning experience throughout the year,” said Sollock, who is located in the southwest region of the state. “In order to grow from those experiences, it’s important to document and reflect on them. We’ve developed a record-keeping system to help 4-Hers learn some of those important skills.”&nbsp;

The state’s Project Report Form is nine sections long, but it’s not all that daunting. Sollock says the forms contain a set of easy-to-follow steps to help kids capture what they did, what they learned and more.&nbsp;

She added that the Permanent Record Form encourages youth to capture events outside of their 4-H involvement.&nbsp;

“We find value in documenting everything a young person is doing,” she said. “As they go through the 4-H program, their Permanent Record grows with the child each year. They add to it and before you know it, it’s quite an impressive document.”&nbsp;

Numerous 4-H alumni and parents have reported that keeping records in 4-H has helped them fill out forms such as college admissions, scholarships and even job applications. Sollock said it’s also a great resource for creating a resume.&nbsp;

“I think our kids are busier than they have ever been with all of the activities that are available to them,” she said. “It’s not reasonable to remember everything accurately once we get 5 to 10 years down the road.”&nbsp;

“The fact that they’re documenting their experiences – and more importantly what they’ve learned or gained from those experiences – they have everything in one spot when they sit down to create a resume or fill out a job application.”&nbsp;

Sollock said it’s also a great resource for creating a resume.&nbsp;“I think our kids are busier than they have ever been with all of the activities that are available to them,” she said. “It’s not reasonable to remember everything accurately once we get 5 to 10 years down the road.”&nbsp;“The fact that they’re documenting their experiences – and more importantly what they’ve learned or gained from those experiences – they have everything in one spot when they sit down to create a resume or fill out a job application.”&nbsp;The Kansas 4-H record keeping and project report forms&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/resources/awards-and-recognition/ProjectRecognition.html" target="_blank">are available online</a>.&nbsp;“We’ve got forms that are appropriate for age and skill level, as well as for general projects and animal projects,” Sollock said.&nbsp;“We want this process to be easy. Record keeping isn’t anybody’s favorite thing to do, but it shouldn’t be difficult. We think that it’s important enough that we want all kids to experience it and learn from it. We think our system is straightforward and easy to understand.”&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. — For the first time, the new Junction City High School was filled from wall-to-wall with voices, laughter, and students trying to find their way. JCHS was finally opened for student orientation to get class schedules, meet teachers, explore the building, and more.

School doesn't begin until Wednesday morning, but for staff and students alike, the time was more than necessary to find their bearings in a brand new place.

"I think we've had almost 1500 parents who already pre-registered," said JCHS Principal Merrier Jackson. "They can get access to the student's schedule, if they have transportation questions, and it's a chance to engage with some of those parents, get a chance to get to meet the students and all of that."

After more than a year of hybrid learning, classes will be full-time in-person when the bell rings Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

Some students are walking into entirely new surroundings, more than just the new building, but new to high school altogether.&nbsp;

Kaleb Docker, an incoming freshman's, first impression of the orientation was, "I'm scared," he said with a laugh. "This place is huge."&nbsp;

But that just hammers home the purpose of orientation, allowing kids just like Docker a chance to push past the initial shock of walking into the largest high school, in terms of square footage, in the state of Kansas.&nbsp;

USD 475 Superintendant Dr. Reginald Eggleston spoke of the importance of the event just for students to be able to get inside the doors.

"I know there's a lot of excitement here today. It's the first time everyone has actually had a chance to actually see the product, the building," he said. "We've been talking about it for several years, and so this is the first time for parents, students, and individuals to get in and see all the great work that has taken place, the stat-of-the-art facility. I know parents should be very pleased and proud at what they're seeing today."

Certain areas of the new building aren't quite complete, but the progress will continue daily over the next few weeks. Construction is expected to be fully finished by the end of September.&nbsp;

Blue Jay Way North leading to and from the new Junction City High School is completely open allowing for incoming and outgoing traffic from the new school. Traffic can flow east or west on Rucker Road to reach Blue Jay Way North.

During a joint city-county-school district meeting there was concern about a hill on Rucker Road west of the Blue Jay Way North intersection where normal traffic moves relatively fast and the possibility of T-Bone accidents could exist. Police Chief John Lamb noted that eastbound vehicles going up the blind hill approaching Blue Jay Way is a concern. " So we're hoping through transparency and letting the community know to be mindful when you are approaching that intersection because the bulk of the traffic is going to be coming down Blue Jay Way turning eastbound onto Rucker." Lamb added those who are traveling east from places farther west need to be concerned that it is a blind hill. The possibility of putting a future stop sign or traffic control device are options that have been mentioned to help the situation.

On the west side of the new JCHS, Munson Road connects with K-18 Highway. Lamb noted that K-18 going both east and west as motorists approach Munson Road is a concern as well. Lamb added that the Sheriff's Department will monitor that location. "Working closely with the Sheriff's Department and making everybody aware as they approach that intersection just be mindful that the kids are leaving school. Plans include use of Munson Road as a school bus entrance to the facility, but there also plans to asphalt that stretch of road this fall, possibly beginning in late September.

When it comes to parking at JCHS Lamb stated that people are finding ways to park without parking in a parking spot. "So all&nbsp; the parents and children going to the school be mindful there's plenty of parking." Spaces that are not a parking spot are made specifically for emergency vehicles and for ingress and egress of vehicles.

There are approximately 900 parking spots. Also, more than 600 students will be bused to the facility.

There are plans for a roundabout at the southeast corner of the new JCHS near the main entrance but it will be some time before that is completed. City Manager Allen Dinkel said that a contractor is in place and will first begin work on the road connecting Blue Jay Way and Sutter Woods Road because KDOT eliminated two entrances off K-18 Highway. "And we have to build access to them first, and then the roundabout will start in the spring."

Traffic and roadway concerns near the new JCHS receive attention

ST. CHARLES COUNTY —A man from Abilene avoided injury in an accident just before 5:30p.m. Sunday in St. Charles County Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia driven by Daniel P. Cook, 60, Abilene, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just west of Bryan Road.

The semi and an eastbound 2017 Nissan Altima driven by Tyrone K. Smith, 59, Florissant, merged. The right front of the semi struck the left rear of the Altima.

St. Charles County Ambulance transported Smith to SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital. Cook was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Downtown Junction City will now have one more full storefront, thanks to local entrepreneur Anthony Medina.&nbsp;

Medina, who had previously run the Mid-West Carplex, has expanded his reach in the Junction City community, now with The Furniture Store, located between 7th and 8th streets on Washington in Downtown Junction City.&nbsp;

A large turnout of Junction City residents, friends, family, and city officials came together to tour the large selection of furniture in the two story downtown structure, and that support clearly touched Medina deeply.

"It means the world to me," said Medina of the community support at the ribbon cutting event. "We're glad that people have showed their support because we want to show our support back to Junction City. We've been here for about 25 years and we're happy to be able to give back to the community."

Medina wet on to thank his friends, family, staff, and his pastor for their support in the venture, and hopes to provide a place in the community where people can find affordable, quality furniture for years to come.&nbsp;

GCH seeks support for front line workers

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Just after 10:30 a.m. Friday officers filed a report for burglary in the 2900 block of Wayne Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 41-year-old man reported an unknown suspect entered a detached shed and stole a Ryobi pressure washer, a Stihl weedeater, leaf blower and chainsaw, and a Husqvarna hedge trimmer. 

The total estimated loss associated with this case is approximately $1,830. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Suspect took $1800 in items from shed

By Kim Baldwin, McPherson&nbsp;County farmer After a few months of all that summer on the farm entails, the kids have returned to school. From helping with wheat harvest, hauling meals and equipment out to fields, taking naps in the car while helping me complete parts runs, sweeping shop floors, assisting with irrigation duties and making popcorn deliveries, it’s safe to say my kids experienced a healthy dose of farm-kid living during their summer break.&nbsp; &nbsp; Secretly, my husband and I conspired and we now fully admit that some of the summer tasks were created to encourage our kids to say, “Man, I can’t wait to get back to school!” &nbsp; This school year, our family has entered a new phase. No longer am I shuttling kids to and from school on a daily basis because both are old enough to ride the school bus. &nbsp; It’s been the topic of many conversations throughout the summer. The excitement of the idea of riding a bus to and from school is something both my children have really built up over the last few months. In fact, as we have approached the start of a new school year, it wasn’t the promise of wearing new clothes, meeting new teachers, making new friends or getting to enjoy a school pizza lunch with their buddies that truly excited my kids. &nbsp; What has motivated my two children every morning has been the countdown to the first day they could ride the big, yellow bus. &nbsp; A week before the first bus ride, we decided everyone needed to get back into the morning school routine. We agreed everyone would need to get out of bed earlier. Everyone would need to be dressed and at the breakfast table by a specific time. And everyone would need to head out the door to ensure the bus would make a stop for the Baldwin children. &nbsp; Oddly, the plans to return to a morning routine were well received by both children. The excitement surrounding the school bus led to both children waking up way before they needed to every morning. They were fully dressed and at the table with plenty of time to spare. They wanted to make sure they practiced the morning routine because they wanted to get on that big, yellow bus. &nbsp; Finally, the big day arrived. The children were awake, dressed, fed and excitedly waiting at the end of our driveway for their chariot. They waved as trucks drove past. They stood in silence to listen for the bus. And finally, after offering assurances that the bus had not forgotten our stop, the big yellow bus arrived. &nbsp; Following the first day, my son realized they would travel many miles of bumpy dirt roads. His overwhelming excitement of sitting in the back of the bus was momentarily quelled that first day thanks to his tendency to get car sick. Apparently all those bumpy rural roads make for a pretty uneasy ride if you sit in the way back of the bus.&nbsp; &nbsp; However, after making a seating adjustment, my two agree that you can still enjoy a bus ride even if you sit closer to the driver. &nbsp; While my two children are not the first on or the last off the bus, they’re pretty darn close to it. Our small school district only has a few busses running the country routes. My kids ride a bus that traverses the far boundaries of the west, north and northeast parts of the school district.&nbsp; &nbsp; Catching the bus in the morning means heading out the door almost 40 minus earlier than when I would chauffeur my passengers last year. It also means you get home later.&nbsp; &nbsp; As we continue our morning routines and the newness of a new school year begins to fade, it is my hope that my two will continue to look forward to going to school every morning – even if it’s mainly because they get to traverse the bumpy rural dirt roads on a big yellow bus.

Kids on the Bus

Junction City Oktoberfest has been scheduled for October 8, from 4:30-midnight, and October 9, from 8:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m..&nbsp; This event will occur in downtown Junction City.&nbsp; There will be multiple bands, a Volksmarch, an Art Walk, a Schutzenfest, German food, beverages, and games and activities for children and adults.&nbsp; The nonprofit Junction City Oktoberfest organization is partnering with Junction City Main Street leading in the event.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities.&nbsp; Volunteers are being scheduled in 2-hour increments. They need 10 to 15 people to assist with set-up from 8 a.m. to Noon on Friday, Oct 8th and 20 to assist with clean-up on Saturday, October 9th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There will be four entrances and&nbsp; eight volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts manning each entrance for a total of 64 volunteers. Volunteer Entrance times would be Friday, Oct 8th 4-6 p.m., 6-8 p.m., 8-10 p.m. and 10-Midnight. Volunteer Entrance times for Saturday, October 9th, would be 9-11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 3-5 p.m..

&nbsp;Volunteers are also needed to assist serving of food and beverage and to assist with running of contests which would be another 50 to 60 opportunities. In all, approximately 200 to 300 volunteers will be needed.&nbsp;

Junction City Oktoberfest has been scheduled for October 8, from 4:30-midnight, and October 9, from 8:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m..&nbsp; This event will occur in downtown Junction City.&nbsp; There will be multiple bands, a Volksmarch, an Art Walk, a Schutzenfest, German food, beverages, and games and activities for children and adults.&nbsp; The nonprofit Junction City Oktoberfest organization is partnering with Junction City Main Street leading in the event.There are a variety of volunteer opportunities.&nbsp; Volunteers are being scheduled in 2-hour increments. They need 10 to 15 people to assist with set-up from 8 a.m. to Noon on Friday, Oct 8th and 20 to assist with clean-up on Saturday, October 9th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.There will be four entrances and&nbsp; eight volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts manning each entrance for a total of 64 volunteers. Volunteer Entrance times would be Friday, Oct 8th 4-6 p.m., 6-8 p.m., 8-10 p.m. and 10-Midnight. Volunteer Entrance times for Saturday, October 9th, would be 9-11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 3-5 p.m..&nbsp;Volunteers are also needed to assist serving of food and beverage and to assist with running of contests which would be another 50 to 60 opportunities. In all, approximately 200 to 300 volunteers will be needed.&nbsp;

Deputies responded to a non-injury accident on U.S. 77 Highway at mile marker 164 at 1:25 p.m. Saturday. According to the Sheriff's Department, Roger Bennett, Junction City, was traveling south on U.S. 77 in a 2003 Dodge Ram when he attempted to pass several vehicles. Ariel Lamas was traveling south on U.S. 77 and went to pass a slow moving vehicle, but failed to see the Dodge Ram that was currently passing them and sideswiped it, causing moderate damage.&nbsp;

All vehicles were removed by their owners.

Geary UD 475 Board of Education members have approved an intergovernmental support agreement between the Fort Riley Garrison and the school district.&nbsp;

According to USD 475 Chief Operations Officer David Wild the agreement would allow Fort Riley Public Works to use Hutton Construction via a District contract to demolish the former Jefferson Elementary School building. "In exchange the District would be allowed to use the Fort Riley Construction Debris landfill free of charge as well as receive an eight percent administrative fee for handling the cost of demolition of the building ( Building 104 ).

School board approves intergovernmental agreement

Phased entry to the new Junction City High School building began Aug. 12th with the arrival of teachers and office staff, and as of Monday orientation for students and parents. Orientation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m.

"What you are going to see is something that is almost unconscionable. I think kids will be disappointed when they go off to college after seeing this building," said JCHS Principal Merrier A. Jackson. "It's it's own zip code."

The building stretches for one quarter of a mile from one end to the other. Jackson said staff will be monitoring the transitions between classes with stop watches approximately the first week. "At the old high school we had five minutes transition time, now we have seven. We have the flexibility to go as high as ten minutes."

Jackson noted one good thing is that if you're courses are in your academy you just have to go up and down stairs where everything is close. "But if you've got to go to the gym or one of the other classes in a different academy it may take a bit longer."

Common spaces and furniture were installed last week. Work continues on the orchestra room and a few coaches spaces in the physical education department.&nbsp;

Jackson said there are students who have not been a school setting for a year and a half. There is concern not only about the physical well being but also the social-emotional well being. "We're going to spend our first three days building relationships, connecting the sense of connection wholeness, what does it feel like to be a Blue Jay, welcome them back, making sure that no one's invisible, no one's left out. We have a lot of great activities scheduled."

Students begin attending classes at the new JCHS Wednesday

Local leaders, business personnel, residents and leaders in the military had an opportunity this past week to visit with national and state officials working to support the new Main Street program in the Junction City.&nbsp; They were gathering information about downtown from those who want to make it successful.

Norma Miess, Vice President of Revitalization Services for Main Street America, stated that their mission was to compare information with a market analysis that they are conducting about Junction City, and look at opportunities to help the local Main Street program. "Develop a strong foundation through strategy and develop a plan for action for the next couple years."

Miess noted that an earlier community survey showed a strong base of people that want to own their future. "It looks like that we have a spirit of entrepreneurship here so we're very pleased to see and want to see what that means for this community, in particular." A strong community spirit was also noted. "We've been very impressed that a lot of people feel there is a lot of potential for downtown. They have a vision of seeing a more diverse business mix, places to eat, activities to enjoy, really opportunities to bring them together as a community."

Investment in downtown and supporting small businesses are considered keys at this time. Support from the national and state level will be a long term partnership.

The visits Thursday and Friday also included a downtown parade by the JCHS Marching Band on North Washington Street.
