Junction City Commisioners have authorized $4.837 million in improvement projects in the city. They range from work on Grant Avenue, and on both sides and in cul de sacs on Westwood Boulevard from 12th Street to around Rucker Street, to city wide street patching, street work near the 12th street Streeet Community Center and expansion of the animal shelter.

The projects are expected to&nbsp; be done over a wide period of time. The money will come from city rollover funds.

City staff will also look at other potential street and sidewalk repair projects suggested by Commissioner Richard Pinaire and bring back a cost estimate at the next meeting of the governing body.

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will conduct the post’s annual Memorial Day observance Monday, May 26, at 11:40 a.m. at the Post Cemetery, 193 Huebner Rd. The observance honors the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces.

Col. Jerry Nunziato, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, will speak as part of the ceremony. Following his remarks, Col. Nunziato and Command Sgt. Maj. John Adkerson, Fort Riley Garrison Command Sgt. Maj., will place a wreath in honor of Fort Riley’s fallen.

There was a big turnout of friends and colleagues at the retirement reception for Geary USD 475 Associate Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Gustafson on Wednesday at the Devin Center. It was an emotional day for Gustafson. "I am extremely emotional. I've been emotional pretty much since I announced it ( retirement ). it's coming up to this day when I knew I was going to see a lot of my former teachers and colleagues."

Gustafson expressed surprise at the people who drove a long way to say hello. "People I haven't seen for 20-25 years. It's been a remarkable evening."

Gustafson has been employed by USD 475 for 47 years. Her final day on the job will be June 30.&nbsp;Gustafson has worked in the school district as a secretary, a paraprofessional, teacher, principal and as the Associate Superintendent.

Junction City Commissioner Ricardo Gutierrez has confirmed that he does not plan to seek election to a full term on the governing body. The filing deadline is noon on June 2. His future focus will be on education through a theology program.

Gutierrez was appointed earlier this year to fill an unexpired term on the commission.

KDOT said that K-43 in Dickinson County is expected to close for the replacement of the railroad crossing between Detroit and Enterprise. The closure will begin at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28 and is expected to reopen by 6 p.m. on Friday, May 30.

During this time, K-43 will be closed to all traffic at the tracks. A signed detour will direct through traffic on K-43 to use K-43, Old U.S. 40, K-15, and K-4. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) designates state highways for official detour routes due to safety, weight, and maintenance considerations.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly, in accordance with Executive Order #20-30, on Wednesday, directed flags throughout the State of Kansas to be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in honor of Butler County paramedic Justin Lauppe, who died in the line of duty last week.

“For 14 years, Justin Lauppe was dedicated to serving his community and providing essential care to his fellow Kansans in the greatest need,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“We owe him a debt of gratitude for his selfless sacrifices. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones.”

June 21, 2025 - Manhattan, KS.&nbsp;Sunset Zoo has announced the 71st birthday of Susie, the chimpanzee and the oldest chimpanzee in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). A celebration in her honor will take place Wednesday, June 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the Chimpanzee Exhibit, complete with “The Queen Wears Black” themed enrichment and birthday activities for guests.

 Born in 1954 and arriving at Sunset Zoo in 1974, Susie has lived more than&nbsp;three decades beyond&nbsp;the average chimpanzee lifespan in the wild, which typically hovers around 40 years. Her remarkable life is a testament to the dedication of Sunset Zoo’s animal care team and partners at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.As the matriarch of the chimpanzee troop, Susie has long commanded the respect of her companions — Julian (46), Hazina (38), Hususa (33), and Koto (12). Known for her signature “kisses” to familiar faces, her love of blankets, and her fondness for lounging in her favorite tub, Susie continues to delight guests with her gentle presence.

“With every year, Susie reminds us of the importance of long-term, high-quality animal care,” said Scott Shoemaker, Zoo Director. “She continues to enjoy time outside, interacts with caretakers and guests, and remains the heart of our chimpanzee troop.”

As with any individual of advanced age, Susie receives specialized care for age-related health concerns, including cataracts, arthritis, and muscle wasting. She is closely monitored by zookeeping staff and veterinary partners, receiving nutritional supplements and comfort-based treatments to support her well-being.“We know our community loves Susie as much as we do,” said Animal Curator, Caitlin Kenney. “While we celebrate this amazing milestone, we also know her age brings us closer to the time when we’ll need to say goodbye. For now, we’re cherishing every day we get to spend with her.”

Geary County Veterans Alliance will host a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday ( May 26 ) at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. This is a chance to honor the men and women that gave their lives in service to the nation.

Command Sergeant Major ( Ret. ) Ricardo Gutierrez will serve as the keynote speaker.&nbsp;

The Junction City Community Band will perform and there will be a 21-gun salute during the program.

Benefit will support the Food Pantry's Building Fund

The event will feature information and safety demonstrations from a variety of on-post and off-post agencies aimed at promoting safer behavior and safety all summer from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. 

Demonstrations will include SIDNE (Simulated Impaired DriviNg Experience) carts and the Kansas Highway Patrol seatbelt convincer.

102 Days of Summer Safety Fair.

May 20, 2025 — High school students from across the State of Kansas will participate in the 87th session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas, Sunday, June 1, through Saturday, June 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This will be the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU.

Among the major events during the week include a visit by U.S. Congressnan Derek Schmidt (R-Kan.) and Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab.&nbsp;Schwab will appear on Monday, June 2, as part of the evening retreat ceremonies and will swear in Kansas Boys State delegates who are elected mayor of their KBS city.&nbsp;

In addition, Mike Finnegan, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of K-State Strengths initiative within the Staley School of Leadership at Kansas State University, and a 1998 Kansas Boys State delegate, will be the featured keynote speaker during the Kansas Boys State opening session on June 1.&nbsp;

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. This will be the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU.Among the major events during the week include a visit by U.S. Congressnan Derek Schmidt (R-Kan.) and Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab.&nbsp;Schwab will appear on Monday, June 2, as part of the evening retreat ceremonies and will swear in Kansas Boys State delegates who are elected mayor of their KBS city.&nbsp;In addition, Mike Finnegan, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of K-State Strengths initiative within the Staley School of Leadership at Kansas State University, and a 1998 Kansas Boys State delegate, will be the featured keynote speaker during the Kansas Boys State opening session on June 1.&nbsp;The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility

Fort Riley Garrison Commander Col. Gerald Nunziato Jr. talked about 1st Infantry Division deployment shedules with Junction City, Geary County and USD 475 officials on Monday.

During a joint meeting at the C.L. Hoover Opera House he noted the 1st Brigade Combat Team will deploy to Europe for nine months in the June to July time frame.&nbsp; Most families with children in USD 475 schools are not expected to leave during the deployment period but the spouses of young soldiers with no children may return home. About 80% of the approximate 4,000 soldiers in the Brigade will deploy.

More deployments are planned in 2026 with some smaller contingents and one larger group. The lowest point for soldiers on post would occur next summer with about 6,000 to 7,000 and possibly 8,000 troops at the installation. The total troop allotment for Fort Riley totals in the 13,000 to 14,000 range. Approximately 50% of the soldiers would be gone at the peak of the deployments.

Nunziato noted that 800 to 1,000 soldiers will also be coming to Fort Riley.

During a Geary County District Court hearing Monday, 26-year-old Corrieyonna Trice entered a not guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of Domestic Battery. A jury trial was scheduled for September 15 in the case.

Trice was charged following an alleged January 23 incident involving Junction City Commissioner Al ( Alovence ) Gordon. He too faces one misdemeanor count of Domestic Battery with arraignment scheduled on June 2.

Authorities were called to their home on Jan. 23. Trice had earlier testified about a fight with Gordon revolving around hair clips that she had laid out to do her hair. The clips wound up in a shopping bag carried by Gordon with a dispute over who had initially possessed the clips. Gordon and Trice had been in a relationship for nearly seven years.

The Geary County Clerk's Office confirmed that Thomas J. Wesoloski has filed for a seat on the USD 475 Board of Education. He is a retired teacher from USD 475.

Storm Update

&nbsp;In early May, a delegation of U.S. livestock genetics and agriculture leaders representing Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Idaho, and the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association traveled to Aguascalientes, Mexico, to advance trade partnerships and expand the global reach of U.S. beef cattle genetics. Delegates from Kansas included Dr. Justin Smith, Kansas Department of Agriculture Animal Health Commissioner; Dr. John Nelson, KDA field veterinarian; and Thad Geiger, Geiger Cattle, Troy, Kansas.

Mexico remains the largest agricultural trade partner for the state of Kansas, with trade totaling $1.85 billion in 2024. As global trade relationships evolve, this mission emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, especially in livestock and genetics.

“Expanding U.S. beef cattle genetics exports and understanding Mexico’s evolving feedlot operations are essential to fostering resilient supply chains,” said Suzanne Ryan-Numrich, KDA Director of Ag Marketing. “While we work to promote beef cattle genetic exports, we also aim to better understand the needs and priorities of our Mexican counterparts.”

The delegation took part in&nbsp;trilateral discussions with the Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Ganaderas and the Canadian Cattle Association, where they addressed shared industry concerns including trade barriers, inspection protocols, and threats such as the New World screwworm, a pest that poses a risk to livestock and has disrupted cross-border trade.

The delegation also conducted site visits to cattle breeding operations and regional feedlots and engaged with industry during the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, one of Mexico’s most prominent agricultural expos.

“The trip gave me a deep appreciation for the resilience of Mexican cattle producers who operate successfully in challenging conditions,” said Geiger. “The trilateral discussions underscored how closely our industries are connected. Our strengths complement each other, and strong partnerships benefit both sides of the border.”

This trade mission is part of KDA’s mission to support Kansas producers and agribusinesses, including facilitating opportunities for producers to market and sell livestock genetics both domestically and internationally. These missions are made possible through KDA’s membership in U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc., with funding provided through the USDA Market Access Program.
