Manhattan, Kan. – The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) will welcome a new temporary exhibit opening January 16.&nbsp;Run! Jump! Fly! Adventures in Action™&nbsp;invites visitors to step into scenes right out of action-adventure stories and jump into action star training.&nbsp; This includes playful activities that kids and families can do together to build strength, coordination, balance and endurance. The exhibit will be open to the public from January 16, 2021 through May 2, 2021. It will be offered in both English and Spanish.

Run! Jump! Fly! Adventures in Action™&nbsp;encourages visitors to try out activities that may be new to them while also revisiting familiar activities in new ways. Cultural spotlights and real-life examples of young people who are passionate about the activities further encourage visitors to get into action. As visitors move through the exhibit having fun with physical activity, they gain ideas for how they can become more active in everyday life. By creating an immersive environment in which kids and adults can merge their imagination with real physical activity,&nbsp;Run! Jump! Fly! Adventures in Action™ demonstrates how physical activity is fun.

Run! Jump! Fly! Adventures in Action™&nbsp;features four adventure scenes, an action star training center, and a toddler pyramid. Each adventure scene provides an imaginative setting in which kids can try out a high appeal physical activity. The adventure scenes include surfing/snowboarding, kung fu, a climbing canyon, and flycycles (flying bicycles). Each area highlights a specific physical challenge of balance, strength, coordination or cardiovascular endurance. Selected scenes also spotlight cultural origins of the activity.

Throughout the exhibit, kids and accompanying adults stamp the activities they tried on Action Trackers. Visitors can also take home 3-Day Mission Action Tracker – activity logs that encourage people to get physically active for a total of 60 minutes a day.

The exhibit aims primarily at children ages 5-12, while children 2-5 will also be able to join in the fun at many of the activities. Additionally,&nbsp;Run! Jump! Fly! Adventures in Action™&nbsp;developers worked to make the exhibit activities accessible to visitors with varying physical abilities and developmental needs.

The FHDC will offer public and virtual programs that focus on health and wellness topics throughout the duration of the exhibit. GEARY COUNTY, Kan. - According to a release from Geary County Emergency Management, yesterday at approximately 7:38 a.m. the Geary County Fire Department was dispatched to a residence located at 2519 N. Dietrich Road in western Geary County for a structure fire.

A shed located on the residence was fully engulfed and was spreading to the house.&nbsp;

Geary County Fire responded with three pumper units and a tanker unit, as well as 16 firefighters. Mutual Aid from Dickinson County Fire District 1 was requested and they responded with four additional fire units. A Junction City Fire/EMS med unit was on scene for standby; however, there were no injuries.

Geary County’s first arriving units were able to get a stop on the fire in the residence, containing it to one room. The fires were extinguished and the fire was under control by 8:32 a.m..

It appeared that the fire was caused by heat lamps in the shed igniting straw that was there for chickens being raised. The chickens perished in the fire.

The residence was owned and occupied by the Joshua Muckey family. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.

The total damage is estimated at $100,000.00.

Update on Structure Fire in Geary County

Geary Co. COVID-19 Update

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an aggravated assault in Manhattan and have made an arrest.

Just before noon Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault and interference with LEO in the 1100 block of Fremont Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department Activity report.

Officers listed multiple victims when it was reported a 30-year-old suspect identified as Skylar Scheible, 30, Manhattan, had threatened them with a firearm. 

Officers arrested Scheible shortly after on requested charges of aggravated assault and interference with LEO. 

Scheible was issued a total bond of $20,000.00 and is no longer confined in the Riley County Jail.

 </figure>MANHATTAN —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an aggravated assault in Manhattan and have made an arrest.Just before noon Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault and interference with LEO in the 1100 block of Fremont Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department Activity report.Officers listed multiple victims when it was reported a 30-year-old suspect identified as Skylar Scheible, 30, Manhattan, had threatened them with a firearm. Officers arrested Scheible shortly after on requested charges of aggravated assault and interference with LEO. Scheible was issued a total bond of $20,000.00 and is no longer confined in the Riley County Jail.

December 2020 Weather Summary December was a lot warmer and a little bit drier than normal. The warmer than normal continued a trend that started in November but the drier than normal has been occurring on since September. Two cold snaps in December tempered the above normal temperatures, but not by much. The average daily high for December was 46.6, 5.6 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 24.9, 3.7 degrees above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 35.7, 4.6 degrees above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 67 on the 9th and again on the 22nd. The lowest temperature for the month was the low of 11 degrees on the 23rd and 24th. There were three records set during December. The high of 67 on the 9th broke the old record high for that date. The previous record was 66 set in 2015. The high of 67 on the 22nd also broke the record high for that day. The previous record was 65 set in 1950. The overnight low of 39 on the 21st broke the old record high low temperature of 37 set in 2014. While it was a warm December it wasn’t record warm. The warmest December on record was in 1957 when the area had a monthly mean temperature of 40.2. The coldest December was the bone chilling December 1983 when we had a monthly mean temperature of 13.6. Christmas 1983 broke clear and cold with a low of -12 but after only reaching a high of 1 degree on the 24th the mercury did climb clear up to 17 on Christmas Day! Nearly as cold was December 1989 when just ahead of Christmas we went nearly 72 hours with the mercury never climbing above zero! The only significant precipitation for December occurred in a mixed precipitation event just before the end of the year. Normal December rainfall is 1.02 inches. Milford Lake received 0.77 inches for the month and Junction City 0.91 inches. Only a trace of snow fell for the month, normal is 3.7 inches. Season to date the Junction City area has received 0.3 inches of snow, normal season to date is 4.7 inches of snow. In meteorological circles 30 year averages are frequently used for “normal” and these 30 year averages are recalculated every ten years. 2021 we start using new “normal” or average precipitation and temperatures based on the period from 1991 - 2020. In general the new normal temperatures are slightly warmer with low temperatures rising more than high temperatures. Over the past ten years we will have seen the annual mean temperature rise nearly six tenths of a degree. The average daily high rose two tenths of a degree but the average overnight low rose one full degree. Average annual rainfall increased slightly from 33.15 inches to 33.56 inches. In general late summer, fall and winter monthly rainfall declined slightly while April through August precipitation increased. January is historically or coldest and driest month of the year but along with February, it’s our snowiest month. Average daily highs start on New Year’s Day at 38 and by the end of the month are up to 42. Average overnight lows range from 18 on the 1st to 20 on the 31st. &nbsp;January is our driest month of the year with only 0.73 inches of liquid precipitation but ties with February for being the snowiest month with long term average January snowfall of 4.7 inches. 2020 Weather Summary 2020 was very much a mixed bag of weather. The annual mean temperature for 2020 was 55.4, 1.1 degrees above normal. The average daily high of 65.6 was right on target for the long term average daily high but the average overnight low of 45.3 was 2.3 degrees above normal. There were 7 months with average temperatures above normal and 5 months below normal. The hottest day of the year was August 8th with an afternoon high of 96 degrees. The coldest morning of the year was February 13th when we had a morning low of 2 degrees. This is the second year in a row we failed to reach the century mark. It is, however, the first year since 2015 that we didn’t dip below zero. The 94 degree temperature extreme range is well below the long term average of just over 109 degree average annual temperature range! Annual precipitation at Milford Lake in 2020 was 34.04 inches, slightly above the normal annual precipitation. Junction City received 30.43 inches of precipitation about 3 inches below normal. Most of our precipitation will normally fall from April through August when we expect to receive 65% of our annual total. Milford Lake received 72% of their annual total in those five months and Junction City received 67%. While the Milford Lake rainfall total was above normal for the year, only 4 months in 2020 had above normal precipitation with the other 8 months being below normal. The 2019-2020 snowfall season was only about 3/4 of normal. Long term average seasonal snowfall is 18 inches and we received 13.5 inches. December 2019 was the snowiest month of that season with 7.5 inches of snow. The snowfall season runs from October to May.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library will reopen to the public on Sunday, Jan. 10&nbsp; at 1:00 p.m. All services that were being offered at the time the library closed will resume with the exception of the availability of the public restrooms and drinking fountains which will remain closed until further notice.&nbsp; Library Director Susan Moyer said the library’s operating schedule will also be slightly different.&nbsp; Instead of closing at 9:00 p.m. on Monday-Thursday the library will close at 7:00 p.m. on those days.&nbsp; This, too will be in effect until further notice. KDWPT celebrates the Western Meadowlark on National Bird Day

MANHATTAN—Kansas State University is considering remote learning to begin the spring semester.

According to University President Richard Myers statement Tuesday afternoon "We hope to see progress in our fight against the pandemic that disrupted our operations last year. At this time we remain in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/covid-19/return/reopening/phase-3/">Phase 3</a>&nbsp;of our reopening plan as we continue to adhere to our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/covid-19/return/reopening/">five guiding principles</a>&nbsp;for continued operations.&nbsp;

As a reminder, in Phase 3 employees are encouraged to work remotely if possible and mass gatherings are limited to 50 or fewer individuals. Face coverings, physical distancing and hand-washing continue to be essential methods to keep each other safe. While there is a temptation for us all to succumb to "pandemic fatigue," now is the time for increased resolve and resiliency.&nbsp;

Projecting to the start of classes on Jan. 25, the indicators we rely on to make decisions are not moving in a positive direction. New case rates continue to increase, as do hospitalizations throughout our host communities and state. Our medical authorities tell us a new variant of the virus is likely to increase the transmission rates of this already widespread pathogen. The rollout of vaccines, while holding great potential, remains slower than anticipated in the country, but especially in our state.&nbsp;

Our administration is working with various planning groups to address contingency plans for the spring semester. This includes the possibility of starting the semester in a completely remote learning posture. Our intention is to assess the data and decide how to approach the coming term for all facets of the university. Please know we are closely monitoring the situation and will keep you apprised.&nbsp;

Community Blood Drive is set

On January 5, 2021 at approximately 7:38 am, Geary County Fire Department was dispatched to the residence located at 2519 N. Dietrich Road in western Geary county for a structure fire. A shed located to the residence was fully engulfed and was spreading to the residence.

Geary County Fire responded with 3 pumper units and a tanker unit and 16 firefighters Mutual Aid from Dickinson County Fire District 1 was requested and they responded with 4 fire units. A Junction City Fire/EMS med unit was on scene for standby. There was no injuries.

Geary County first arriving units were able to get a good stop on the fire in the residence, containing it to one room. The fires were extinguished and the fire was under control at 8:32 hrs.

Authorities confirm that here were no injuries in a fire reported at 7:38 a.m. Tuesday in western Geary County at 2519 North Dietrich Road. More information will be released by the Geary County Rural Fire Department later Tuesday. 

The location of the fire was about five miles west of Junction City. Dickinson County provided mutual aid in the fire response along with Geary County.

Rural firefighters deal with morning fire 

On Monday at 2227 hours-Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to US-77 Highway at Mile Marker 152 for a two vehicle accident. Clyde M. Hill of Grandview Plaza, KS, was traveling south in a 2014 Chevrolet Impala when his vehicle was struck by Tobias L. White of Junction City, KS, who allegedly ran a red light while traveling north in a 2017 Jeep Patriot. 

The Sheriff's Department said Hill’s vehicle sustained disabling damage and no injuries were reported.

Since the last report, Pottawatomie County has identified 69 new confirmed positive cases nd 46 additional recoveries.

The 69 new cases brings the total number since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,178 for Pottawatomie County, as opposed to 1,033 recoveries.&nbsp;

Currently, there are 123 active cases in the county, with six people hospitalized due to COVID-19.&nbsp;

The county also announced one death from the Coronavirus since the last report, bringing the total to four since the start of the pandemic.&nbsp;

All Kansas fifth grade students, from public, private, or home schools, are invited to create and submit artwork that represents the contest theme “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.” The artwork must be original, handcrafted, 8 ½ x 14 inches in size, and contain the words “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.”

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25 as National Missing Children’s Day. The annual national poster contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention creates an opportunity for schools, law enforcement and child advocates to discuss the issue of missing and/or exploited children with youth, parents and guardians and to promote child safety.

“This contest creates awareness for the children who are missing, while also providing parents and teachers an opportunity to talk to kids about what to do if they’re approached by strangers,” Schmidt said.

KBI Director Kirk Thompson added, “While this contest is for fifth graders, we know how important it is for parents to take time to discuss appropriate safety measures with each of their children.”

The winner’s poster will also represent Kansas in the national contest. The national poster contest winner, along with his or her parents and teacher, will be eligible for a trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Missing Children’s Day ceremony in May 2021.

Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association will be collecting and using discarded Christmas Trees in an environmentally&nbsp; beneficial way.

The plan for this year is to grind the trees for use as mulch where needed around the Sportsman’s Acres property. When&nbsp;&nbsp;you take down your tree this year, take it to the collection point on the empty lot at the corner of 14th &amp; Jackson streets in Junction City.

A date has been set for pick up and transport of the trees on Saturday, 16 January, so be sure to get your trees there before then.

If you can help move the trees, show up at 9:00 am at 14th &amp; Jackson with gloves, maybe a truck or trailer, and start loading!!

Thirteen Geary County residents were hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment, according to the report Monday from the Geary County Health Department. That was up four from Friday.

There were 45 recovered cases and 38 confirmed positive cases. There are 127 active cases in the county. Since the pandemic began there have been 17 deaths, 1,202 confirmed positive cases and 1,064 recovered cases in Geary County.

Geary County health officials release the latest COVID-19 numbers

RILEY COUNTY — A 79-year-old male and an 82-year-old male died last week at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan after testing positive for COVID-19. The 79-year-old man tested positive on December 16th and passed away on December 30th. The 82-year-old man tested positive on December 30th and passed away on January 2nd. No further information will be released about the patients. 

Riley County has identified 116 new positive cases and 184 additional recoveries since the last report on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. 

Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan is caring for 14 positive patients and 1 PUI patient at this time. A Person Under Investigation is someone experiencing symptoms who is waiting for test results. Four of the positive patients are in the Intensive Care Unit.

Nearly 500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered by the Riley County Health Department to medical staff and those who are critical to public safety. 

“I wish we could give one to everyone who wants a vaccine right now,” Director Julie Gibbs said. “But we have a limited supply and have worked diligently using a systematic approach to determine those most at risk of catching or spreading the virus to protect the health and safety of Riley County.” 

We continue to work each week to determine how to distribute the vaccines to best fit the needs of our community. Below is the current phases we are working on in accordance with guidance from KDHE. We hope to be finished vaccinating those in Phase 1 near the end of January. We do not know when Phase 2 will begin because we do not know when additional shipments of the vaccine will be distributed to Riley County.  Vaccines are not yet available for the public. As soon as we know when vaccines will be available to the public, we will publicize that information widely and often.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary in Manhattan.

Just after 3:30p.m. Sunday, officers&nbsp;filed a report for burglary in the 1300 block of N. Juliette Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department Activity Report.

A 27-year-old man and an and 89-year-old reported an unknown suspect entered an unlocked residence and stole a green Stackon gun safe, a Springfield M1 Garand rifle, an M1 Carbine rifle and a Palmetto State AR-15 rifle. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,940.00.

 Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.00.

RCPD: Suspect took gun safe, rifles from Manhattan home

ASSARIA — A Manhattan woman was injured when she was struck by a vehicle on Old Highway 81 near Assaria early Friday morning.

Just before 3a.m. Jan. 1, emergency personnel were sent to South Old Highway 81 approximately a half-mile north of Assaria Road for the report of a pedestrian who walked out into the highway being struck by a northbound vehicle, according to&nbsp;Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

The driver Joseph Fraizer, 32, of Salina, who was in a 2003 Honda Odyssey, swerved in an attempted to avoid hitting Cheyenne Hamilton, 22, of Manhattan, but ended up striking her. 

EMS transported her to Salina Regional Health Center with serious injuries to her legs.

As for how Hamilton ended up on the highway, Soldan said that Hamilton had an argument with a male friend. He stopped the vehicle they were in, she got out, and he left.&nbsp; Soldan said he believed alcohol played a role in Hamilton's behavior.

RCPD: Suspect stole Lexus, Honda from Manhattan home

ABILENE -- Cooper Holloway, of Abilene, continues to help comfort children at medical facilities with his Cooper’s Care Cases.

Cooper recently donated another 250 “cases” (draw-string bags) to Memorial Hospital in Abilene. They will be given to children who are patients in the Emergency Department, Laboratory, Radiology, Inpatient Unit, and Heartland Health Care Clinic.

Why is Cooper so dedicated to making the bags? In May of 2013, he was diagnosed with a Common Variable Immune Disease which makes it hard for his body to fight off illness. Cooper, however, is strong and draws part of his strength from helping and encouraging other children.

Once Cooper was diagnosed at approximately age 4, he had to start weekly plasma transfusions with T and B cells, according to information from Memorial Health Systems (MHS). Because of the nature of his disease, Cooper had to take a bag of his own toys and books with him to the hospital in Kansas City. One day while at the hospital, Cooper told his mother, Dawn, that he wished all children in the hospital had their own bag of things.

Thus, the idea for Cooper's Care Cases began.

Initially, he distributed the hand-made cloth drawstring bags to children in the Kansas City hospital in which he spent so much time. In 2015, he began making and donating bags to Abilene's Memorial Hospital to help local children as well.

Cooper again had help from family and friends creating and filling the bags. The bags contain a notebook for writing and coloring, a storybook, small notepads, crayons, a pen, pencils, stickers, a note from Cooper that reads “stay strong like Cooper,” and a small toy and book donated by McDonald’s of Abilene.

 </figure>ABILENE -- Cooper Holloway, of Abilene, continues to help comfort children at medical facilities with his Cooper’s Care Cases.Cooper recently donated another 250 “cases” (draw-string bags) to Memorial Hospital in Abilene. They will be given to children who are patients in the Emergency Department, Laboratory, Radiology, Inpatient Unit, and Heartland Health Care Clinic.Why is Cooper so dedicated to making the bags? In May of 2013, he was diagnosed with a Common Variable Immune Disease which makes it hard for his body to fight off illness. Cooper, however, is strong and draws part of his strength from helping and encouraging other children.Once Cooper was diagnosed at approximately age 4, he had to start weekly plasma transfusions with T and B cells, according to information from Memorial Health Systems (MHS). Because of the nature of his disease, Cooper had to take a bag of his own toys and books with him to the hospital in Kansas City. One day while at the hospital, Cooper told his mother, Dawn, that he wished all children in the hospital had their own bag of things.Thus, the idea for Cooper's Care Cases began.Initially, he distributed the hand-made cloth drawstring bags to children in the Kansas City hospital in which he spent so much time. In 2015, he began making and donating bags to Abilene's Memorial Hospital to help local children as well.Cooper again had help from family and friends creating and filling the bags. The bags contain a notebook for writing and coloring, a storybook, small notepads, crayons, a pen, pencils, stickers, a note from Cooper that reads “stay strong like Cooper,” and a small toy and book donated by McDonald’s of Abilene.

It was slightly delayed, but a Christmas present well worth the wait for a Great Bend native. Zane Evans found out last week that he won the car of his dreams through an online sweepstakes from Tuner Cult. Evans won an R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R, one of only 300 produced. Generally, never buying into contests because the chances of winning are next to slim, changed when Evans saw the R34 being given away. "The R34 is my dream car," said Evans. "I would rather have this car than 10 Lamborghinis." With every $1 spent on tunercult.com during the sweepstakes, you received 10 entries into the giveaway.

"Initially, I planned to buy some stuff real quick and not tell the wife," joked Evans. "I called the wife to tell her 'Sorry, I spent some money,' and she told me to make another order to get these chances going."

The contest ended Dec. 20 and the following week Evans was notified he was randomly chosen to win the car and $60,000 in cash to help pay for the taxes and extra expenses of the vehicle. "Tuner Cult sends all the entries to a sweepstakes company in Rochester, New York," said Evans. "I was at work Tuesday (Dec. 29) fixing my car and I got a call from Rochester. I told myself I would answer all unknown calls." Evans, now living in Manhattan with his wife and three children, is still deciding on when and how to make the trip to Irvine, California to pick up his dream car.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"My heart instantly started racing," added Evans. "I couldn't wear my watch for like four hours because it thought I was constantly trying to work out. It was ridiculous."

Made in 1999, the R34 still falls under the 25-year rule which means the vehicle is not generally certified or legal for street use in America. The import is legal in the United States as an "antique" or car show vehicle as long as the car is driven no more than 2,500 miles per year. After the 25 years are up, the owner can drive the car as much as he or she likes.
