Beginning on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Skiddy Road will be closed to thru traffic at the intersection of Skiddy Rd, J Hill Rd, and East Lyons Creek Rd for the expected duration of one (1) day for a culvert replacement project. This culvert replacement is necessary to maintain proper water flow and protect the roadway from future erosion or collapse. We appreciate residents and commuters’ cooperation and patience during this important infrastructure improvement. The official detour route for northbound Skiddy Rd traffic will be Skiddy Rd to Nelson Rd then east to Erichsen Rd north to J Hill Rd. South bound Skiddy Rd traffic will follow the detour in reverse.

Beginning on Thursday, August 28, 2025, a second culvert replacement project will take place on Skiddy Rd 1.6 miles north of the Skiddy Rd &amp; Skiddy West Rd intersection, closing Skiddy Rd to thru traffic for the expected duration of one (1) day. This culvert replacement is necessary to maintain proper water flow and protect the roadway from future erosion or collapse. We again appreciate residents and commuters’ cooperationand patience during this important infrastructure improvement. The official detour route or northbound Skiddy Rd traffic will be Skiddy West Rd to Harrel Rd then north to Otter Creek Rd E, then back east to Skiddy Rd. Temporary Road Closure for Culvert Replacement

Heavy rains and high winds moved through Junction City on Tuesday afternoon. The inclement weather began around 12:45 p.m., and within less than two hours, nearly two inches of rain fell, accompanied by very high winds. The damage ranged from power outages to downed tree limbs and power lines, as well as flooding on some streets.

Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges explained that all across Junction City trees and power poles were down as well as street lights being out temporarily as well.&nbsp;

"One of the main concerns was the area of Lincoln Elementary School," Berges said. "We've got a main transmission overhead line of the tree snapped and pulled most of the line down and onto the fence going around the school. " Berges noted that all the kids from the school were safe, and local fire departments, emergency management, school district personnel, and Evergy were on the scene. Pick-up time at the school remained the same, but the pickup locations were altered due to the situation. 

Berges noted that local law enforcement was out during and after the storms, assessing the damage and helping out wherever needed. "Safety is our main priority, and that's why we are taking the steps we are right now," Berges said. 

Due to the storms, the City of Junction City issued a release saying that the Land Bank and City Commission meetings scheduled for Tuesday night have been cancelled.

Storm leads to downed trees and meeting cancellation

The Kansas Department of Transportation has increased the speed limit on K-177, north of Council Grove to I-70 in Morris and Geary counties.

Following completion of the K-177 reconstruction, a speed study and a sight distance review, the speed limit has increased from 60 miles per hour to 65 miles per hour.

Flood Advisory issued

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—Two law enforcement officers were injured during a domestic violence arrest on Monday in Wabaunsee County.

Just before 7:30p.m. Monday, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 36000 block of K-99 Highway, Wamego, Wabaunsee County Kansas on report of an active Domestic Violence Incident in progress, according to a media release.

 After arriving on scene while attempting to place the suspect in custody, the suspect struck and kicked officers in active resistance to arrest. Sheriff Eric Kirsch took a hit to the head.

Sheriff Kirsch and Detective Rorabaugh received several kicks to the body. The suspect unsuccessfully attempted to grab Sheriff Kirsch's holstered Taser. 

The suspect was successfully subdued with minimal use of force via lawful physical control prior to being safely placed in handcuffs without further incident. 

Officers suffered minor injuries. The suspect did not require medical treatment.

The suspect identified as 23-year-old Abigail Ross, was transported from the scene to the Wabaunsee County Jail where she is being held on requested charges of charged of Domestic Battery Battery LEO (x2) Interference LEO and Resisting Arrest.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a violent robbery in Manhattan.

Just&nbsp; before 6p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault and aggravated robbery in the 700 block of Riley Lane in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;An 18-year-old man and a 14-year-old man reported that a 43-year-old suspect identified as Steven Renner of Manhattan threatened them with a crowbar and took a moped. 

Police later arrested Renner on requested charges of aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. Renner remains jailed on a bond of $50,250.

August 1 to October 1:&nbsp; Hold discharge to minimum outflows and allow the lake elevation to increase and then be maintained at 1145.4.

October 1 to January 1:&nbsp; Maintain the lake elevation at least one foot over conservation pool in the fall and early winter.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating alleged forgery in Manhattan.

Just after 10:30a.m. Friday, officers filed a report for forgery in the 2100 block of Farmingdale Court in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Deparment activity report.

&nbsp;An 84-year-old man was listed as the victim when it was reported an unknown person stole a check, washed it and forged another check. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $8,455.42. Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Final official vote totals for the Junction City Commission primary election 

The 13th Annual Patriot Day Career Fair has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 10, in Junction City, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The career fair, hosted by KANSASWORKS – Junction City Workforce Center, will be held at the Junction City Municipal Building, located at 700 N. Jefferson St. The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce is also participating in the event.

Attendance is free for job seekers. Businesses must register to reserve a booth.

The Junction City Workforce Center will be hosting employers from all across the region.&nbsp;

Rain and high heat are both in the Monday forecast

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in July. This is unchanged from 3.8% in June and an increase from 3.7% in July 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 66.9% in July.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is up slightly from 5 percent in June to 5.4 percent in July. The rate Riley and in Pottawatomie counties is also up slightly.&nbsp; In Wabaunsee County the rate remained steady at 3.7 percent.&nbsp;The rate in Dickinson County continues to climb from 3.7 percent in May to 4.3 percent in July.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 4,300 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 700 over the month, while government decreased by 5,000. The largest job gains in the private sector were in trade, transportation and utilities (+1,300 jobs). The largest decrease was in leisure and hospitality&nbsp;(-900 jobs).

Since July 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 3,300. This change is due to an increase of 5,100 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,800 government jobs.

The schedule is set for the Chapman Labor Day Celebration. Recognizing 250 Years of the US Army the theme for the Lions Club Labor Day Parade will be "Honoring the Past, Defending the Future."

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1.

Some other activities include on Sunday, Aug, 31 at 8:30 a.m. the Lions Club Golf Tournament at Indian Hills Golf Course, the Chili Cook-off from noon until 2 p.m.at Sheeran Park and free swimming from noon until 6 p.m. at the Chapman City Pool.

On Monday other activities will range from a 5K and Kids Fun Run at the District Track and Class of 77 Car Show at the high school to art/craft and food vendors dowontown from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Luck of the Irish Toy Show will run from 10 a.m.. to&nbsp; 4 p.m. at the high school multipurpose room.

The Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation has awarded a $1,000 grant to the Junction City Animal Shelter. Vanessa Gray, Shelter Director, said it will help with spay and neuter of animals.

She noted that the plan is for "helping some families in Junction City and the surrounding area to get their pets fixed." They also intend to get their trap neuter release program up and going again.

The plan is to open their web site and Facebook page so families can apply for assistance.

Sheltrown is being held on a bond of $1,000,000 on requested charges that include 73 counts of aggravated internet trading in child porn; child &lt;14yoa, and 73 counts of sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of child &lt;18.
