Manhattan has taken a step forward in meeting childcare needs in the community. The ribbon cutting and grand opening for the new Flint Hills Community Accelerator and Childcare Business Initiative was held Thursday at 2423 Kimball Ave.

The project includes eight fully equipped childcare suites operated by independent providers who are receiving direct mentorship and business support through the program.&nbsp;

CBI was established in response to the childcare shortage facing the Manhattan region. Governor Kelly told the audience that the facility was popular when Kansans come together with a shared vision, "and a commitment to bettering the lives of their friends. families and their neighbors."

Kelly said that the celebration showed just how far innovative outside the box thinking can take us. "The Flint Hills Community Accelerator is a groundbreaking center that will integrate community services under one roof." The Governor also added, "Focusing on the four pillars of childcare, employment, education and healthcare this hub puts the needs of the greater Manhattan community first."

The facility brings together the Childcare Business Initiative, Manhattan Area Technical College, Kansas WorkforceONE and Manhattan Free Clinic. Together, these partners offer solutions in childcare, education, employment and healthcare where parents can pursue education, job seekers can access training, entrepreneurs can launch businesses and families can receive affordable care.

Nearly $8 million in public and private funding financed the project. Land was donated for the facility by Ascension Via Christi.

The 116th annual Chapman Labor Day Celebration will take place Sunday, August 31, and Monday, September 1, this year. 

One of the big highlights of the annual celebration is the Luck of the Irish Toy Show. It is scheduled for Labor Day, Monday, September 1, at the Chapman High School Multi-Purpose Room from 10:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. 

Sunday highlights include a chili cook-off at Sheeran Park, free swimming at the Chapman City Pool from 12:00-6:00 p.m., and a Street Dance from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Monday highlights are the Luck of the Irish Toy Show and the Labor Day Parade at 2:00 p.m.

Chapman's Luck of the Irish Toy Show is set for Labor Day

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is hosting a career fair on Wednesday, August 20, specifically geared for equipment operator positions in north central Kansas.

This career fair will run from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at the KDOT office located at 3825 Yost Drive in Salina.

The event also includes facility and equipment tours, where a current KDOT equipment operator will be available to discuss the function and use of each piece of equipment.

KDOT offers a starting wage of $19.65 per hour for those without a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and $21.13 per hour after obtaining a CDL.

KDOT provides CDL training at no up-front cost. 

Additional benefits include first-day insurance coverage, immediate enrollment in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) and work-life balance with annual and sick leave accrual starting during the first pay period.

Equipment operators are part of KDOT’s progression program, which allows for learning and skill advancement as well as promotion opportunities.

Wednesday was the first day of the new school year at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School in Junction City.

School Principal Shawn Augustine reported that 109 students, Pre-K through 12, were enrolled. All teaching positions are full. Coaches are needed for both boys and girls middle school and high school basketball, and there is also a need for a middle school cheer coach.&nbsp;

Saint Francis Xavier School begins a new year

Geary County CVB Advisory Committee members have supported an effort to have KSNT conduct digital advertising to attract visiting football fans to Junction City motels when their teams play at Kansas State this upcoming season.

The cost will be $2,000 per game for three games including the contest with TCU Oct.11, Texas Texh Nov. 1 and Colorado on Nov. 29.

A live streaming service will be geared toward the areas where those teams are located including Fort Worth and Lubbock, Texas plus Boulder, Colorado.

In other business during a recent meeting the CVB Committee discussed the Atomic Annie cannon area located at Freedom Park. CVB Director Raquel Cinco noted that there needs to be landscaping work, some railing on the trail there that needs to be fixed and some equipment that needs to be painted.

The CVB wants to update information on a kiosk along US 77, possibly make it a new or updated structure and add some lighting. This is preliminary right now. Final action has not been taken.

CVB works to make lodging available for college football fans

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest.

Just before 4p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for interference with law enforcement including obstruct/resist/oppose felony warrant execution in the 600 block of Fort Riley Blvd in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 22-year-old suspect identified as Yabdiel Rodriguez of Manhattan interfered with law enforcement during the service of a felony arrest warrant.&nbsp;

Police arrested Rodriguez on requested charges of interference with law enforcement.  Rodriguez was also arrested in relation to an incident which was reported on August 10, 2025 for two counts of interference with law enforcement and possession of opiate/opium/narcotic or certain stimulant. Additionally, Rodriguez was arrested on a Riley County District Court Warrant for aggravated assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm within city limits and disorderly conduct. This warrant stems from a report filed on April 5, 2025. Rodriguez is being held on a $27,000 bond.

RCPD: Manhattan man interfered with police during felony arrest

The Milford Lake Corps of Engineers will be conducting an Archery Draw for 40 deer hunting locations on August 23rd on the front lawn of the Corps Office located at 5203 N. Hwy. K-57 Hwy which is on the south end of the Milford Dam.

Registration for the draw will begin at 8 a.m. and the draw for a hunting location will occur at 9:30 a.m..

Hunting locations and permits include: Milford Fish Hatchery 1 permit, Former K-State Lease 4 permits, East Rolling Hills Park 2 permits, West Rolling Hills Park 5 permits, Curtis Creek Park 10 permits, School Creek Park 10 permits, South Timber Creek Park 2 permits, North Timber Creek Park 4 permits, Farnum Creek Park 2 permits.

All hunters must be present, and a Photo Id is required to register.

Crossbows will not be allowed except for disabled hunters, &amp; mentor youth which is an option at some locations.

Dates for these hunting area opportunities begin October 1 and many extend through December 31, 2025.

&nbsp;Junction City High School has an authorized shooting sports activity that offers students a lifetime skill with training and competition enjoyed across Kansas by over 150 other schools? The JCHS Trap Team was approved in 2023 by the USD 475 School Board and has been competing since then with 3-4 student athletes on the team each year. The team has enjoyed good support in the community but would like to increase member numbers. Sponsors are ready and willing to help a growing team.

The JCHS Team is organized under the USA Clay Target League which had 53,250 registered athletes in 1,815 schools across the nation in 2024. Since the League was formed in 2008 there have been NO accidents or injuries during competition. The team competes at the local range, Sportsman’s Acres near Milford Lake, and is coached by trained volunteers from the Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association. Weekly scores are reported to the League database for competition with other Kansas schools…..no travel is necessary during the regular season. Safety training is mandatory and experienced Range Safety Officers supervise each time the team shoots. No guns or ammunition are ever on school property.

To participate you must be a JCHS student in good standing, weekly transportation to the range, access to an appropriate 12 or 20 gauge shotgun and ammunition, eye/ear protection, and a commitment to attend weekly competitions.

The cost is a $40.00 League registration fee, $25.00 Safety Training (one-time fee), $72.00 target fee, up to $150.00 ammunition cost (although ammo is usually provided at no cost through sponsors and grants).

Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association has worked with a number of local school teams for the last 9 years and would like to see the JCHS Team grow. Junction City High School has a Clay Target Shooting Team

Ellie Dillon, C.L. Hoover Opera House Director, was the guest speaker for the JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting on Wednesday. Ellie recently retired from having worked in USD 475 Geary County Schools for 37 years and was selected to be the leader at the Opera House in Junction City. She is a lifelong resident of Junction City, has served as a Dance Coach at Junction City High School; worked with the Junction City Little Theater for 12-15 years having been the President for 6 years and directed shows.

She outlined the season for club members with shows beginning in October through March. Some of those include a comedian, a dinosaur exhibition, a country band, the First ID Band from Fort Riley, a soft rock band and Motown sounds. In addition, the Junction City Little Theater will produce four plays and there will be performances of jazz and other forms of music presented in the lobby area during the year.

The Theater Arts Academy for youth will begin their work in September to prepare a show in the fall and spring. For more information on the Academy or any of the shows call the C.L. Hoover Opera House at 785-238-3906.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club will have a fundraiser at JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill on Monday, August 18 from 11:00 AM until close. Ten percent of the cost of purchases will be given back to the Optimists to support 16 Geary County youth organizations and 3 scholarships.

Record Flash Flood Warnings Prompt AAA Alert on Used Car Market

As of July 15, more than 3,000 flash flood warnings have been issued nationwide — the highest total on record for this time of year since the modern alert system began in the mid-1980s. The unprecedented number of warnings has left vehicles stranded in rising waters from coast to coast, and AAA is cautioning used car buyers to be on guard for flood-damaged vehicles that could surface on the market.

“Modern vehicles have much more technology on board than ever before,” said Shawn Steward, Public Affairs Manager for AAA Kansas. “There are wiring systems, sensors, and electronic modules running throughout our vehicles, including behind the bumpers and fenders. Water intrusion into those systems can cause serious, costly, and potentially unrepairable damage.”

Floodwaters can also damage engines and other mechanical components, repairs for which often exceed a vehicle’s value, leading insurance companies to declare them total losses. While many flood-damaged cars are given salvage or flood titles and recycled or scrapped, some are repaired just enough to resell — sometimes without disclosure of past damage.

AAA recommends several steps to avoid buying a flood-damaged vehicle • Choose a reputable dealer • Inspect upholstery, carpeting, and seatbelts for water stains, mud or mismatched fabric&nbsp; • Check under carptes, inside the trunk, and behind panels for signs of dirt, sand, or mildew • Test all electronics, including windows, seats, lights and air conditioning • Look for rust around doors, hinges, and under the hood.&nbsp; • Check for moisture inside headlights and taillights&nbsp; • Verify the VIN through the National Insurance Crime bureau's free VINCheck tool and consider purchasing a CARFAX report&nbsp; • Have the vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic&nbsp;&nbsp;

Steward noted that it can take months or more than a year for flood-damaged cars to enter the used market. “Buyers should always thoroughly inspect vehicles before purchasing,” he said. “If a deal seems too good to be true, it often is.”

You can pick the next color for J-Hill

The Bow Slinger Archery Tournament will be held at Fort Riley's Outdoor Advenure Park on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. There will be a shooter's meeting at 8:30 a.m.

This event is open to the public and active-duty military, with five competition categories. There will be cash prizes.

&nbsp;Among the unique features of the tournament is th&nbsp; opportunity to shoot from atop an M-1 tank. The 3D targets include “Bigfoot of the Flint Hills.” Find more information and pre-register at riley.armymwr.com. Registration closes&nbsp;&nbsp;Aug. 14.

The Bow Slinger Archery Tournament will be held at Fort Riley's Outdoor Advenure Park on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. There will be a shooter's meeting at 8:30 a.m.This event is open to the public and active-duty military, with five competition categories. There will be cash prizes.&nbsp;Among the unique features of the tournament is th&nbsp; opportunity to shoot from atop an M-1 tank. Junction City Public Works notice

The Geary County K-State Extension Office is once again offering a Stay Strong, Stay Healthy strength training program for older adults beginning August 20 at the 4-H/Senior Center in Junction City. The eight-week program is designed to help older adults improve their quality of life, increase strength, and enhance overall wellness through safe and effective strength training.

Participants will meet twice per week from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with sessions led by a trained instructor. The class will meet on the following dates:

The program consists of warm-up exercises, eight strengthening movements, and cool-down stretches.&nbsp;

This strength training program is ideal for older adults who want to:

Classes are held in a safe, familiar setting and are accessible to people of all fitness levels. No special attire is needed—just comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes. Participants are asked to bring water and a towel to each session.

The registration fee is $25, which covers all 16 instructor-led classes.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 18, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) plans to begin a resurfacing project on about 10.5 miles of K-82.

The project is a mill and overlay from the K-15/K-82 junction to the K-82/U.S. 77 junction in Clay, Geary and Riley counties.

During daylight hours, flaggers and a pilot car will guide one lane of traffic through construction at a reduced speed. Drivers should be prepared for a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules.

Shilling Construction Co., of Manhattan, is the prime contractor for this $2.4 million project and has scheduled all work to be completed in October, conditions permitting.

A post-election audit shall take place after each election. The precincts to be audited are randomly selected by each county elections office. The audit shall be performed manually by the counties and shall review all paper ballots selected to ensure the hand vote count is identical to the vote count from the tabulators. The audit shall be performed by a sworn election board consisting of bipartisan trained board members.
