Both the Junction City High School boys and girls teams continued their road trip, this time at Washburn Rural High School. It was homecoming night for the Junior Blues in Topeka.

Girls recap - Washburn Rural 56, Junction City 14

It was the same story as the past three games for the Junction City Lady Jays. The first four minutes were high intensity and back and forth. Junction City sophomore guard Isabel Pruitt scored the first five points for Junction City, and sophomore Taliyah Campbell knocked down a free-throw line jumper to cut the deficit to one, down 8-7 with 4:00 to play in the first quarter. From this point forward, it was all Washburn Rural. The Junior Blues finished the quarter on a 7-0 run, and led 15-7 after one.&nbsp;

In second quarter action, Washburn Rural expanded their lead, and Junction City only scored two points in the quarter. JCHS trailed 31-9 at the half, and lost the game 56-14.&nbsp;

With the loss, the Lady Jays fall to 2-15 and are swept by Washburn Rural this season. The Junior Blues improved to 12-6 on the year.&nbsp;

It was the start the Blue Jays were looking for! Junction City jumped out to an early 11-0 lead over Washburn Rural, thanks to back-to-back baskets by senior Jackson Hollie to begin the game which put all the momentum on the side of the Blue Jays. After the first quarter, JCHS led 13-3.&nbsp;

The second quarter was the polar opposite of the first quarter. Washburn Rural began the quarter with back-to-back baskets and continued that momentum until halftime. The Junior Blues got an offensive rebound and put-back to go in right before half, and led Junction City 17-16. Washburn Rural outscored JCHS 14-3 in the quarter.&nbsp;

To begin the third quarter, Washburn Rural kept the momentum and blasted out of the halftime break on a 14-5 run in the first four minutes of the quarter. The Junior Blues led 31-21, and then traded baskets with JC the rest of the quarter, and Washburn led 39-27. (Combined between the second and third quarter, Washburn Rural outscored Junction City 36-14).&nbsp;

Fourth quarter action featured a strong comeback by Junction City. Senior Lovell Autry converted a three-point play, and Khaliel Walker nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to six. Then senior Jett Thompson converted on a three-point play, and Junction City trailed 43-40 with just under 4:00 minutes to go. Then, Washburn Rural sophomore Brooks Ballard came to life. Ballard was left open and hit three-straight three's and the Junior Blues pulled away to win, 56-40 and sweep Junction City on the season.&nbsp;

With the loss, JCHS falls to 9-9, and Washburn Rural goes to 10-8.&nbsp;

Last week St. Xavier School held their homecoming festivities.&nbsp;Ram fans participated in dress up days, held a pep rally, crowned a king and queen, hosted a basketball scrimmage, and ended the week with a dance. Gotta love that school spirit!

St. Xavier celebrates Homecoming Week

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Three years ago, Nicola Capriotti walked into the H.D. Karns Alternative School not just as a staff member, but as someone who understands what it feels like to sit in some of those student seats.See, Capriotti, who is a computer-based mentor at H.D. Karns, didn’t have a normal childhood as he was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and then moved to Wellington, Kan., when he was seven years old to live with his grandmother.

He attended Wellington High School, but his path wasn’t traditional as he dropped out and earned his GED in 2019, the same year he was supposed to graduate from WHS. Shortly after, he joined the military.“I grew up in a good neighborhood but was financially very poor. My family was on EBT, and I had to get a job very early in life to help support my family. Before that took all my time, I played football, wrestled and was a part of several social study academic games. I even started a cancer awareness club for every month that represents a cancer type,” said Capriotti.

Today, Capriotti can be found using his childhood as an example for his students, pushing them to better their situation, and its one that he does not take lightly.“Being able to work in this building is super meaningful to me. It means committing selfless service to the future of students every single day. It means going above and beyond for the betterment of the students and overall community. It’s long hours, sometimes thankless, but never does a day go by that you do not have a chance to make a positive impact. You get to be the adult in the education system you wish you had growing up. Every day you have a chance to impact a student’s life or future. I think that is a gift and should be treated as such,” said Capriotti, who is currently finishing an associate’s degree in business administration and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in human resources management.

Capriotti has also been able to have that impact away from the Karns building as he started a high school rugby club, the Junction City Jaguars, for area youth that travels all over the area and battles teams in Manhattan, Abilene and Chapman. The club currently has eight students from USD 475 and will open its season on March 14 if it can find enough student athletes to field a team. In the classroom, Capriotti has been a shining star as he has made a difference in countless number of students lives in his short tenure at Karns. At the start of every semester, he shares his story with his students. Not because it’s perfect but because it’s real and he believes vulnerability is a strength.“I think them seeing an authoritative figure open up shows them there is strength in vulnerability. I am often told by many students that I am easy to talk to about things and have helped multiple students through their tough situations. I think they are comfortable with me because I reached that helping hand out first by telling them things I have been through. I have always believed in leading from the front and I can’t expect them to do anything I would not do myself,” said Capriotti.

Through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant, that Geary County Public Works was awarded, Geary County is aiming to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on the roads with a Transportation Safety Action Plan. 

Using recent crash data and input from stakeholders and the community, this plan will identify the roads and intersections in greatest need of safety improvements. This is where the public's help is needed.

At our monthly training, we were able to THANK Clark Carroll for serving Geary County for the past 24 years as a Volunteer Firefighter.

He was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office.  It was presented to him by Geary County Commission Chair Kathy Tremont. 

 Asst. Fire Chief Curt Janke then presented Clark his fire helmet, a plaque thanking him for his service, along with a gift card to a restaurant and some flowers for his wife.

Geary County Rural Fire honors Clark Carroll for 24 years as Volunteer Firefighter

IHOP in Junction City cut the ribbon today to officially announce they are now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (24/7) at their location at 321 East Ash Street.

Mohanad Khmous, the owner, was in attendance to cut the ribbon at the ribbon-cutting ceremony held Thursday at the restaurant. The ribbon-cutting was hosted by the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce.

"I am very proud of our team for making this happen," Khmous said. "I really appreciate their efforts to do this. We are now excited to serve the Junction City community 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The damage estimate from a house fire Thursday at 602 Stone Ridge in Junction City has been placed in the $300,000 to $500, 000 dollar range. Fire Chief Jason Lankas noted Friday that the house is now not believed to be a total loss. It's value was listed at $1.2 million dollars.&nbsp;

The resident was identified as Sue Ann Magana.

Lankas also confirmed new information on Friday morning that the blaze began in a burn barrel on a neighbor's property and then spread through tall grass to the house that was damaged.

The fire cause has been determined to be unintentional accidental.

Assisting in battling the fire were multiple agencies including Junction City, Geary County, Fort Riley, Grandview Plaza and with a drone the Junction City Police Department.

Fire Chief Jason Lankas confirmed early Thursday evening that the fire was out. The blaze began near an outdoor shed and then spread through tall grass to the house. There were not any injuries.

The Red Cross and a State Fire Marshall's Office were called in to assist. The female resident of the house received private help.

Junction City Fire Department, Geary County Rural Fire, Fort Riley Fire, and Grandview Plaza Fire Department on Thursday worked a large house fire located just southeast of K-18 and U.S. 77 in Junction City.

Fire Chief Jason Lankas noted Friday that the house is now not believed to be a total loss. It's value was listed at $1.2 million dollars.&nbsp;The resident was identified as Sue Ann Magana.Lankas also confirmed new information on Friday morning that the blaze began in a burn barrel on a neighbor's property and then spread through tall grass to the house that was damaged.The fire cause has been determined to be unintentional accidental.Assisting in battling the fire were multiple agencies including Junction City, Geary County, Fort Riley, Grandview Plaza and with a drone the Junction City Police Department.----Fire Chief Jason Lankas confirmed early Thursday evening that the fire was out. On Sunday, December 7 Sunset Zoo welcomed a new resident when Kivuli, the black-and-white colobus monkey, gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. 

Kivuli has been an excellent mother from the start, and the baby is healthy and growing steadily.At two months, the baby is starting to venture away from mom for short periods of time and munching on bits of solid food.

While born all white, his dark hair is starting to grow in as he slowly morphs into a striking, adult black-and-white colobus monkey.&nbsp;While he is meeting all his developmental milestones, this little monkey still needs a name.

Sunset Zoo is asking for the public’s help in naming our newest resident. All the options are words or names in Swahili, the most common language in Eastern and Central Africa where black-and-white colobus naturally occur. The troop’s caretakers have narrowed down the choices to three names:

Nuru (new-roo) – means “light” in Swahili, in contrast to his mother’s name, Kivuli, which means “shadow”

Kiatu (key-ah-too) – means “shoe” in Swahili, a tribute to Sunset Zoo’s recently retired director, Scott Shoemaker•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

“Junction City High School has always had a strong JROTC program, and it's even better than it has been in years. Our cadet numbers are up significantly, and enthusiasm is high. We are continuously providing more opportunities to our cadets to grow personally and build not only their teamwork, but also their citizenship skills. Yesterday's inspection demonstrated the hard work and dedication our students put in, and I am very proud of all of them. We'd like to give our sincerest thanks to the 601st&nbsp;Aviation Support Battalion for the help they gave us during the inspection,” said LTC Richard R. Hodgson (R), Junction City High School JROTC instructor.

The Blue Jays, who tallied 139 out of a total of 140 points, were scored on the following categories on Wednesday: Continuous Improvement Brief, Service-Learning Project Brief, Cadet Interviews, Unit Report, Drill Inspection, In Ranks Inspection, Color Guard and Instructor Report.The JROTC three-year inspection, which is often known as the Joint Program Assessment (JPA), is a comprehensive, mandatory evaluation conducted every three years by brigade officials to assess program compliance, instructor effectiveness and cadet performance.

Taylor Michele Szimandel-Saporito, a senior at St. Xavier's Catholic High School, was recognized by the JC Breakfast Optimist Club on February 11 at the Hampton Inn, having been selected as the Student of the Quarter for the second quarter. Taylor is the daughter of Juan Szimandel-Gonzales and Erika Gonzales.

JC Optimists recognize students

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, on Wednesday led a committee hearing with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) to discuss proposed changes to VA’s community care program, according to a media release from the Senator's office.

In December 2025, VA issued the Community Care Network Next Generation Request for Proposals (CCN NextGen RFP), which aims to modernize the delivery of care in the community, increase competition and innovation within VA’s community care program and deliver higher quality care to veterans.

“In many ways, these procurements reflect a welcome focus on innovation, competition and accountability,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“They also signal long-overdue progress toward upholding industry standards, embracing value-based care, strengthening program integrity and addressing persistent challenges—such as the timely return of medical documentation—that have frustrated veterans, providers and policymakers alike.”

This is the first major acquisition effort to support VA’s community care program since the passage of the&nbsp;MISSION Act&nbsp;in 2018. The proposed CCN Next Gen RFP contracts would not change underlying veteran eligibility for community care.

“These contracts must do more than look good on paper,”&nbsp;continued Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“Instead, they must deliver results for veterans, VA staff, community care providers and taxpayers by leading to real, measurable improvements in access, choice, outcomes and costs.”

Mandi Gaudian, Administrative Marketing Specialist for the Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau and a member of the 2025–2026 class, shared how the program shaped her perspective.

“LEAD JC helped me better understand the importance and benefits of being an active participant in our community,” Gaudian said. “Through this experience, I gained insight into how the community functions, its history, and what it takes to support positive progress moving forward. The instructor’s thoughtful selection of materials, along with their ability to draw on the diverse backgrounds of participants to provide exceptional examples of leadership, made the experience especially impactful.”

Graduates leave the program with deeper connections, increased knowledge of regional assets, and a renewed commitment to community involvement. Many alumni go on to serve on local boards, volunteer for civic initiatives, and champion projects that enhance the vitality of Geary County and Junction City.

Local Leaders Graduate from Chamber’s LEAD JC Program

The City Commission reviewed conceptual options for the future reconstruction of Moro Street in Aggieville from 11th Street to N. Manhattan Ave. this week. Four refined concepts were provided within the 60-foot right-of-way between storefronts on Moro that generally feature angled parking on one side of the street, a 20-foot driving lane, and the potential for mid-block pedestrian crossings and other landscaping and pedestrian amenities.

Mayor Susan Adamcheck summarized some of the ideas from the commission including parking on the north with access to a remaining public parking lot, carry through consistency from nearby North Manhattan Avenue and 12th Street, and a desire for some amenities.

Staff anticipates returning to the City Commission with a recommended delivery approach, and a more detailed 30% design of the project with updated cost estimates for the two-block project.&nbsp;

Other points also ranged from the reduction of parking spaces in the two blocks of Moro to the need for a parking lot on the east end. There was&nbsp; also a note that Aggieville is due for a parking upgrade.&nbsp;

The City Commission reviewed conceptual options for the future reconstruction of Moro Street in Aggieville from 11th Street to N. Manhattan Ave. this week. Four refined concepts were provided within the 60-foot right-of-way between storefronts on Moro that generally feature angled parking on one side of the street, a 20-foot driving lane, and the potential for mid-block pedestrian crossings and other landscaping and pedestrian amenities.Mayor Susan Adamcheck summarized some of the ideas from the commission including parking on the north with access to a remaining public parking lot, carry through consistency from nearby North Manhattan Avenue and 12th Street, and a desire for some amenities.Staff anticipates returning to the City Commission with a recommended delivery approach, and a more detailed 30% design of the project with updated cost estimates for the two-block project.&nbsp;Other points also ranged from the reduction of parking spaces in the two blocks of Moro to the need for a parking lot on the east end. There was&nbsp; also a note that Aggieville is due for a parking upgrade.&nbsp;

Ice College of Engineering</a>, effective Aug. 2.“Dr. Khokhar brings exceptional leadership experience, growth-minded vision and high-quality teaching, research&nbsp;and engagement&nbsp;to K-State in the role of dean for the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, provost and executive vice president.&nbsp;“I look forward to working with him to advance the college and university’s strategic vision.”

As the chief academic and administrative officer for the college, and LeRoy C. and Aileen H. Paslay Chair in Engineering, Khokhar will provide leadership, strategic vision and direction for the college, and support and promote the academic mission of the university. "Since 2017, Khokhar has served as the Palmer Department Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University. Pawnee Mental Health has announced the promotion of Nate Bellamy to Director of Operations. Bellamy brings extensive experience in facilities leadership, safety oversight, and operational management to his new role.

Bellamy specializes in facilities and operations leadership across health care, industrial and government environments. His background includes regulatory compliance, project and risk management, ensuring organizations meet safety, building and security standards while effectively managing facility-related risks. He also has a strong record in project and process improvement management, leading capital projects, optimizing workflows, and driving cost-effective performance.

Before joining Pawnee Mental Health, Bellamy served in several leadership and operational roles, including assistant director of a summer camp, Loss Prevention contract manager, maintenance manager, small-business owner and as a security contractor. These roles strengthened his expertise in systems improvement, team leadership, and operational efficiency.

In his new role, Bellamy will oversee facilities operations, safety processes and organizational infrastructure. He will work closely with agency leadership to support daily operations, enhance system reliability and help maintain a safe, efficient environment for staff and clients.

The Blue Jays responded with five straight points and cut it to 6-5 with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Both teams stayed stingy on the defensive end, and Emporia led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In second-quarter action, it was a very similar story — a defensive battle, with Junction City's best ball handlers and scorers on the bench in foul trouble. Both Lovell Autry and Khaliel Walker had two fouls early in the first half. JCHS hung in there on the defensive end and trailed 26-19 at the break.

The third quarter is when Junction City finally made its run. Lovell Autry and Brody Boeckman connected on several shots near the basket, and the Blue Jays outscored Emporia 13-5 in the first six minutes of the third quarter. JCHS had cut the deficit to two, trailing 34-32. Like any good team, Emporia went on its own run and got its lead back up to seven before JCHS made two free throws at the end of the quarter. After three quarters, the Spartans led 41-36.

Junction City again went on a run to begin the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 44-41. Junction City junior Brody Boeckman converted on a layup and was fouled, giving him a chance to tie the game with 2:50 to go. Boeckman missed the free throw, and JC still trailed 44-43. JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– Fort Riley Elementary fifth grade teacher Emily Chandler was named one of seven statewide 2026 Kansas Master Teachers on Wednesday morning by Emporia State University.

By being chosen for the 2026 class, Chandler becomes the fourth Geary County Schools USD 475 teacher in the last five years to claim the prestigious honor. She is also the 11th individual in USD 475 history to be named a member of the Kansas Master Teachers.

 </figure>By Matt HooverUSD 475 Communications CoordinatorJUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– Fort Riley Elementary fifth grade teacher Emily Chandler was named one of seven statewide 2026 Kansas Master Teachers on Wednesday morning by Emporia State University.By being chosen for the 2026 class, Chandler becomes the fourth Geary County Schools USD 475 teacher in the last five years to claim the prestigious honor. She is also the 11th individual in USD 475 history to be named a member of the Kansas Master Teachers.Chandler was chosen alongside Casey Ewy of USD 383, Kathleen Gilliland of USD 253, Heather Hall of USD 229, Michelle Kelly of USD 458, Rachel Tanney of USD 233 and Kimberly Tate of USD 373.Chandler, who is in her third year of teaching in USD 475 and is a Texas native, brings a wealth of passion, fun and expertise to the classroom as she not only teaches fifth grade English Language Arts and Social Studies at Fort Riley Elementary, but also recently created a journalism club at the school. Prior to her time in USD 475, Chandler, who is also the fourth and fifth grade team lead at FRE, taught at multiple schools in Arizona and Texas.Through the support of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, each Master Teacher will be presented with a check for $1,000.The recipients were selected by a committee including representatives from the Kansas Association of School Boards, Kansas State Board of Education, K-12 Kansas Principal Association, Kansas Parent Teacher Association, Kansas National Education Association, United School Administrators, Kansas Association of Teacher Educators – Kansas, and representatives of the 2025 Kansas Master Teacher class.The 2026 Master Teachers will be honored on Master Teacher Day on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Emporia State University. As part of several recognition activities, Chandler will tour the National Teachers Hall of Fame, one room schoolhouse and participate in the How We Teach This Podcast. The teachers will then be honored during a social hour at 5:45 p.m. in Webb Hall Lobby of Emporia State’s Memorial Union followed by the banquet and award ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in Webb Hall.Tickets for the dinner cost $25, and reservations are required by Friday, March 20, 2026.
