DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas man is under investigation for allegedly selling drugs in Dickinson County.

In December of 2024, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit began an investigation into the distribution of Methamphetamine in Herington, according to a media release. The approximate ten-month long investigation, resulted in an arrest and a seizure of methamphetamine.

On Thursday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 500 Block of South A Street in Herington. A search of the residence revealed Methamphetamine, Drug Paraphernalia, Cocaine, Marijuana and other controlled substances.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office also served arrest warrants with the assistance of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Junction City Police Department and the Herington Police Department.

Charles Miller, 48, of Woodbine, Kansas was arrested and booked into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Distribution of Controlled Substance using communication facility and No Drug Tax Stamp.

Konza Prairie Community Health Center Announces Temporary WIC Clinic Hours

MANHATTAN, KAN. – The Riley County Police Department executed a search warrant at Chill Vibez Smoke and Vape and made an arrest during its investigation on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025, in the 100 block of Sarber Lane in Manhattan, Pottawatomie County.

According to a media release from the RCPD, the warrant was issued as part of a larger overall investigation that began earlier this year into the distribution of illegal marijuana and THC products in Manhattan. This was an independent investigation by the RCPD and not currently linked to recent enforcement by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

At 3p.m., Al-Shawhati Rayd Mohomed-Hezam, 40, of Manhattan, was arrested in connection with the investigation. Mohomed-Hezam is being held in the Pottawatomie County jail on a $50,000 bond on requested charges of distribution of marijuana greater than 450 grams, but less than 30 kilograms; distribution of THC products greater than 100 doses, but less than 1,000 doses distribution of THC products greater than 100 grams, but less than 1 kilogram.&nbsp;

Just before 9:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of burglary in the 2700 block of Heartland Valley Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 58-year-old man reported an unknown suspect entered his home and took watches, clothing and other items. The estimated total loss associated with this case is $50,000.

RCPD: $50,000 worth of items taken in home burglary

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured and another arrested after a hit-and-run accident just after 12a.m. Thursday in Riley County.

Officers responded to a report of an injury crash near the intersection of 11th&nbsp;Street and Moro Street in Manhattan on Oct. 9, 2025, at approximately 12:05 a.m.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2019 Ford F150 driven by Michael Smith, 25, Manhattan, struck a pedestrian identified as Madison Asbury, 19, of Manhattan, who crossing 11th&nbsp;Street at Moro Street in the crosswalk.

EMS transported Asbury to Stormont Vail in Topeka with serious injuries. Smith was arrested at approximately 12:35 p.m. in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road and charged with aggravated battery and failure to stop at an accident. He is being held on a total bond of $12,000, according to the RCPD.

Manhattan driver jailed after pickup struck teen in crosswalk

A 2017 Buick Encore driven by Sharon Sando, 74, Leonardville was traveling&nbsp; in the 12000 block of Green-Randolph Road, according to the Riley County Police Department Activity report. The SUV veered off the road and rolled into a ditch.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) are alerting the public to the first known occurrence of the Asian longhorned tick (ALHT), Haemaphysalis longicornis, in Kansas. KDHE identified the ALHT after it was found on a dog in Franklin County last week.

ALHT is an exotic, invasive tick species that was first identified in the United States in New Jersey in 2017. This prolific tick, which can reproduce without the need for a male tick, has both human and animal health implications. In 2019, an ALHT in Virginia was found to be infected with Bourbon virus, while Connecticut recently identified an ALHT infected with ehrlichiosis, both of which are tick-borne diseases that occur in Kansas but are currently transmitted by the Lone Star tick.

“We’re still learning about this tick and the ecologic role that it currently plays and may play in the future in terms of disease transmission to humans.”&nbsp;Dr. Erin Petro, KDHE State Public Health Veterinarian, said.&nbsp;“While the human health implications are uncertain, this tick has serious implications for animal health.”

The ALHT can cause extreme infestations on affected animals, sometimes leading to severe anemia or even exsanguination. Beyond the physical threat, the ALHT also transmits the cattle parasite&nbsp;Theileria orientalis&nbsp;Ikeda strain, which causes bovine theileriosis.

In 2024, KDHE piloted a program to create a passive tick surveillance network of veterinary clinics throughout the state. 

Through this program, participating clinics submit tick samples from animals in their care to KDHE for identification. This program has been successful in providing information on where various ticks are found across the state and has been especially useful in under-surveyed areas. One of these partners submitted a routine sample which was later identified as ALHT by KDHE and confirmed by the USDA. In both humans and animals, tick bite prevention is key.

To reduce the risk of disease, follow these precautions:

- Be aware of where ticks are found and using preventive measures when in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas.

- Dress preventively by wearing long pants tucked into socks and shirt tucked into pants.

- Treat clothing and gear with permethrin.

- Use an EPA-approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) when enjoying the outdoors or being in a tick habitat.

- After coming indoors, perform a thorough tick check, being sure to focus on the waistband, under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of knees, and in and around the hair.

- Check pets for ticks, especially around the tail, between the back legs, under the front legs, between the toes, in and around the ears, around the eyes, and under the collar.

- Shower soon after being in a tick habitat or engaging in outdoor activities. This will help remove any unattached ticks and identify any attached ticks.

- To remove attached ticks, use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, grasp the tick near the skin, and apply gentle traction strait outwards until the tick is removed.

- Help prevent tick-borne diseases and tick infestations on pets by consulting with your veterinarian on use of a veterinary-approved flea and tick preventative.

United Way Director Nichole Mader said Fire Chief Jason Lankas, Undersheriff Justin Stopper and Junction City Police Captain Matt Paquette will be on the roof as they seek to raise funds for the campaign.

That will be followed by the release of balloons and then there will be a karaoke contest at 7 p.m. This event, called the United Way Kickoff Bash, is open to the public. There will be free pizza and water or soda.

Broadway favorite and 'Glee' star Matthew Morrison brings a concert to McCain Auditorium

If you don't succeed try, try again. That was a messsage to organizers of a proposed East 9th Street mural in Junction City.

The idea came before the Junction City Commission this week with Nancy Baylor confirming most of the money for the mural had already been raised. She said no history should be erased but there isn't enough discussion about&nbsp; black history. 

Baylor added East 9th Street began in the 1930s. "Black soldiers weren't allowed in bars, restaurants ( elsewhere ) so East 9th Street was there for that purpose." She noted everyone there took care of each other.&nbsp; Curtis Jackson joined Baylor by noting athletes Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson were there."Just don't want to lose any of the history." He added, Ninth Street is part&nbsp; of Junction City's history and it's a diverse history."

The City tore down East 9th Street in the 1970's. The proposed mural would be on a city owned police warehouse in the 300 block of East 9th Street.

Junction City Police Chief Kirt Nichols said police do not have an isssue with the mural itself but with some of the things on the mural," the alcohol, cards that represent gambling, and that kind of thing."

The police chief noted that authorities have spent at least 35 years trying to clean&nbsp; up Junction City. "So I don't want to go back and memorialize the gambling, the liqour, but the other stuff I have no issue with."

Commissioner Ricardo Gutierrez felt bringing in the athletes to the mural was good, and felt murals bring people together but was against the gambling and the alcohol.&nbsp;

Commissioner Richard Pinaire said the discussion was about something that happened 50 years ago. He felt to hide the items "invaded the concept of the artist and the reality." He said that they were depicting a part of the community and memorializing the people, and the mural as proposed was a realistic modest depiction. Commissioner Al Gordon noted there was not an effort to portray crime or the bad of the situation.

Mayor Pat Landes said he understood the chief's opinion and Commissioner Ronna Larson was not opposed to the mural. "I think it's gret to keeep the history alive. You can depict what you want to depict in other ways." She asked if it could be taken back to see what tweaks could be made to it. The proposed mural could then be brought back to the commission.

Saying that the drawing just depicts the reality 50 to 70 years ago, Pinaire moved that the governing body approve the drawing that was submitted. Al Gordon seconded the motion but it was defeated 3-2.

Landes told the organizers for the project he would like to see another rendition and see if they could get something acceptable that works for the police department. He suggested the project could still work. "I think we just need to go back to the&nbsp; drawing board and see if we can work out something a little bit different, make everybody&nbsp; happy and move foward."

Bill Turner, Director of the Kansas Department of Veteran Services, confirms that while several federal-level programs are temporarily halted, all state-managed veteran services remain fully operational. That includes the state’s veteran homes, cemeteries, and service representative offices.

According to the department’s website, the following federal services remain unaffected by the shutdown: •&nbsp; VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers are open and providing all services. •&nbsp; VA benefits such as compensation, pension, education, and housing continue to be processed and delivered. •&nbsp; Burials at VA national cemeteries and applications for markers and headstones will continue. •&nbsp; The Board of Veterans’ Appeals is still issuing decisions. •&nbsp; Call centers, including the Veterans Crisis Line, remain open 24/7. •&nbsp; Suicide prevention programs, homelessness services, and caregiver support are ongoing.

However, other federal programs and operations have been suspended until the shutdown ends, including: •&nbsp; Transition assistance and career counseling services for veterans. •&nbsp; VA regional offices and some call centers, including GI Bill and National&nbsp; Cemetery hotlines. •&nbsp; Public Affairs and unfunded outreach, such as press responses and Vet Resources emails. •&nbsp; Grounds maintenance and headstone placement at VA cemeteries. •&nbsp; Applications for pre-need burial and new Presidential Memorial Certificates. •&nbsp; Outreach to local, tribal, and community partners by VA Central Office.

Eric Rohleder, Deputy Director of the Kansas Office of Veteran Services, said his office has received calls from concerned veterans but assured that Kansas’ state-level operations remain stable.

Govt. shutdown impacts some Veteran services

The Paint the Town Blue Community Parade and Spirit Rally are scheduled Saturday morning in downtown Junction City.&nbsp;

The parade begins at 10 a.m. at 10th and Washington and runs from 10th Street to 6th Street. That will be followed by a Spirit Rally in Heritage Park.

The event helps kick off Homecoming Week at Junction City High School.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run accident that occurred just before 1p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2011 Dodge Caliber driven by David Fliter, 27, of Manhattan, was traveling near the intersection of Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Casement Road in Manhattan.

&nbsp;A 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix collided with the Dodge and then left the scene. 

Through the investigation, the driver was identified as Kimberly Blasing, 60, of Manhattan. Fliter declined transport to Via Christi Hospital. Blasing was arrested at approximately 1:54 p.m. in the 400 block of Walters Drive on requested charges of aggravated battery, driving under the influence, operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and duty of driver to give information. Blasing is being held on a bond of $8,000.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club had a fundraiser at the American Legion&nbsp; on September&nbsp;13 and collected $550.00 to present to USD 475 for students whose parents have an unpaid food service account. Random names of students will be selected to have some impact on the unpaid accounts.&nbsp;

County Clerk Courtney Gilbert said that Geary County Offices (except for emergency services) will be closed on Friday, October 10, 2025, while staff attend annual training.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 40-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole various construction equipment and tools, including a wheelbarrow, truck toolbox and copper cables/wires. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $8,000 to $10,000. Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Quality Play for All has donated $142,000 to help with upgrades at Hammond Park near the 12th Street Community Center.

This donation will be used to purchase additional playground equipment and upgrades to Hammond Park from ATHCO. Officials believe additional equipment for younger children will be a valuable addition, as well as the turf safety surface.

A check was presented during the city commission meeting Tuesday night. It concludes nine years of effort to support park improvements in the community, including including more than one-half million dollars in improvements for the Fifth Street Park.

Tradition and heritage are part of what makes agriculture an attractive way of life for Kansas residents. To recognize this history and the families that contributed to it, Kansas Farm Bureau, the state’s leading agriculture advocacy organization, honors the descendants of families that have been involved in agriculture for over 100 years with a certificate and sign of recognition.

Geary County Farm Bureau Association recognized the legacy of the Erichsen Family Farms with a Century Farm Award on Monday preceding the special cattle sale at JC Livestock Sales.

Geary County Farm Bureau Coordinator Jennifer Latzke said eligibility for the award is as follows:

1. Applicant must be a voting or associate Farm Bureau member in Kansas.

2. Ownership within the same family for 100 or more years by December 31, 2025, with at least 80 acres of the original Kansas farmland.

3. Present owner must be related to original owner.

&nbsp;Claus Erichsen, born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, immigrated with his wife Christina to the McDowell Creek area in 1894. For the sum of $3,000, they purchased 240 acres of land from Josephine and E.W. Hitchcock. As an older settler in his 60's, Claus raised corn, wheat, hay, and livestock with the help of his family members.

While the original rock and wood home burned down, the wooden barn, a chicken shed, and an outhouse are all currently standing today. The farm is managed by fifth-generation family member, Luke Erichsen, and produces soybeans, corn, hay, and pasture.

The Geary County Sheriff's Office reported that on Tuesday at 1212 p.m. Deputies were dispatched to the 200 Block of East 8th St., for a report of a two-vehicle accident. Caleb Rubash of Junction City was reversing a 1972 Kaiser Deluxe Firetruck when he reversed into a parked and unattended 2021 RAM 2500, owned by Richard Rook of Junction City. 

No injuries were reported. The RAM suffered minor damage to the passenger side rear tail light. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by their owners.

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Impala driven by Jerry Ray May, 88, from Colorado, was exiting Interstate 70 eastbound on the north side of Chapman. Junction City, KS – Geary County Historical Society will host “Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy,” a traveling exhibition from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, from August 1, 2026-August 30,2026, will be at the Geary County Historical Society Museum, 530 N. Adams Junction City. The Kansas tour of “Declaration 1776” is presented by Humanities Kansas.

When the Declaration of Independence was issued, the idea that “all men are created equal” was revolutionary. With this seminal document, the Founding Fathers unleashed an open-ended driving force that would shape modern history. Around the world, other countries have declared independence taking the US Declaration of 1776 as a model. “Declaration 1776” uses primary sources to illustrate how Americans and people across the world have been inspired by the Declaration in their pursuit of equality and self-determination. The Kansas “Declaration 1776” traveling exhibition includes a section called “Kansas 1776,” which looks at what was happening on the land that would become the state of Kansas 250 years ago.

Other related programming scheduled for 2026 includes the annual Kansas Day celebration at the Historical Society in January, related STEAM Saturday and Hands on History topics throughout the year, History Alive. reenactment weekend filled with even more encampments than ever before, and a new cooking program: History From Scratch.

“‘Declaration 1776’ is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to for Kansas communities to participate in the national commemoration of America’s 250th right in their own hometowns,” said Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas executive director.&nbsp;
