According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 40-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole various construction equipment and tools, including a wheelbarrow, truck toolbox and copper cables/wires. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $8,000 to $10,000. Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Quality Play for All has donated $142,000 to help with upgrades at Hammond Park near the 12th Street Community Center.

This donation will be used to purchase additional playground equipment and upgrades to Hammond Park from ATHCO. Officials believe additional equipment for younger children will be a valuable addition, as well as the turf safety surface.

A check was presented during the city commission meeting Tuesday night. It concludes nine years of effort to support park improvements in the community, including including more than one-half million dollars in improvements for the Fifth Street Park.

To recognize this history and the families that contributed to it, Kansas Farm Bureau, the state’s leading agriculture advocacy organization, honors the descendants of families that have been involved in agriculture for over 100 years with a certificate and sign of recognition.

Geary County Farm Bureau Association recognized the legacy of the Erichsen Family Farms with a Century Farm Award on Monday preceding the special cattle sale at JC Livestock Sales.

Geary County Farm Bureau Coordinator Jennifer Latzke said eligibility for the award is as follows:

1. Applicant must be a voting or associate Farm Bureau member in Kansas.

2. Ownership within the same family for 100 or more years by December 31, 2025, with at least 80 acres of the original Kansas farmland.

3. Present owner must be related to original owner.

&nbsp;Claus Erichsen, born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, immigrated with his wife Christina to the McDowell Creek area in 1894. For the sum of $3,000, they purchased 240 acres of land from Josephine and E.W. Hitchcock. As an older settler in his 60's, Claus raised corn, wheat, hay, and livestock with the help of his family members.

While the original rock and wood home burned down, the wooden barn, a chicken shed, and an outhouse are all currently standing today. The farm is managed by fifth-generation family member, Luke Erichsen, and produces soybeans, corn, hay, and pasture.

Local farm family is honored

The Geary County Sheriff's Office reported that on Tuesday at 1212 p.m. Deputies were dispatched to the 200 Block of East 8th St., for a report of a two-vehicle accident. Caleb Rubash of Junction City was reversing a 1972 Kaiser Deluxe Firetruck when he reversed into a parked and unattended 2021 RAM 2500, owned by Richard Rook of Junction City. 

No injuries were reported. The RAM suffered minor damage to the passenger side rear tail light. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by their owners.

The driver&nbsp;failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign.&nbsp; A 2000 Peterbilt semi driven by Collin Wiliam Gfeller, 20, Chapman struck the Chevy on the driver side.

EMS transported May to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; A passenger in the Impala and Gfeller were not transported for treatment. Gfeller was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

When the Declaration of Independence was issued, the idea that “all men are created equal” was revolutionary. With this seminal document, the Founding Fathers unleashed an open-ended driving force that would shape modern history. Around the world, other countries have declared independence taking the US Declaration of 1776 as a model. “Declaration 1776” uses primary sources to illustrate how Americans and people across the world have been inspired by the Declaration in their pursuit of equality and self-determination. The Kansas “Declaration 1776” traveling exhibition includes a section called “Kansas 1776,” which looks at what was happening on the land that would become the state of Kansas 250 years ago.

Just after 11a.m. Monday, police arrested Nichole Morehead, 22, of Ogden in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. 

This arrest stems from original charges of distribution of fentanyl, unlawful use of a telecommunication facility to distribute fentanyl, and theft. Morehead was issued no bond and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.&nbsp; She was arrested in Shawnee County on Friday, according to online jail records and later transferred to Riley County.

By a close 4-3 vote Geary USD 475 Board of Education members have made a decision not to pay themselves a salary.

The idea was first suggested by Board Member Jason Butler, who also made it clear he would not benefit because he did not seek reelection.

Butler and Board Members Ron Johnson and Tom Brungardt voted for a salary while Dr. Anwar Khoury, Mark Hatcher, Kristy Haden and Dr. Beth Hudson voted no.

Butler observed that state law allows members to be paid and that he thought eventually all boards would be paid. Some of the other sentiments included those from Hatcher who said he did not run for election to become an employee of USD 475. Kristy Haden said she would vote no because she did this service as a volunteer.

The idea first suggested by Butler called for a $6,000 salary with annual increases indexed to 50% of the average annual increases received by teachers.

GOP House speaker cracks jokes about governor reaching out to Kansans

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly plans to embark on an eight-city tour during October and November to explore with Kansans their state budget priorities ahead of next year’s legislative session.

Kelly, who is term limited and cannot seek reelection, said on Monday the town halls dedicated to formation of “The People’s Budget” would give folks an opportunity to express where they wanted lawmakers to earmark spending.

“Kansans should know and have a say in where their hard-earned taxpayer dollars are going,” Kelly said. “In the months ahead, it’s critical that we continue down the path of responsible budgeting to ensure Kansas does not return to the days of reckless fiscal mismanagement.”

She said her administration continued to be dedicated to creating and maintaining a financial foundation that could survive economic downturn.

In 2018, Kelly was elected in aftermath of aggressive state income tax cuts signed into law in 2012 and 2013 by Gov. Sam Brownback. The 2017 Legislature, in a bipartisan vote, wiped out much of Brownback’s tax agenda, which had been created as a mechanism to eventually eliminate the state income tax. Instead, the result was deep budget cuts, heavy borrowing and a sales tax hike.

During a special legislative session in 2024, lawmakers approved a&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/18/kansas-senate-votes-to-approve-tax-package-negotiated-by-gop-leaders-democratic-governor/">$2 billion, five-year program</a>&nbsp;of state tax reductions.

Kelly had cautioned the Legislature against income tax reductions that jeopardized the state’s financial well-being.

“My administration has been laser-focused on building a strong fiscal foundation for our state,” the governor said.

The first stop on the governor’s tour has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at Salina South High School. She is to be joined by Adam Proffitt, the state budget director.

House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a Wichita legislator seeking the Republican Party’s nomination in 2026 for state insurance commissioner, offered a tongue-in-cheek response to the governor’s announcement.

“After seven years in office, Governor Kelly has announced she and Secretary Profitt are living out their inner Sonny and Cher and launching a statewide duet tour. I hope in addition to their vocal stylings, they offer real budget solutions,” Hawkins said.

He said the House and Senate appropriately set aside the governor’s budget recommendations during the 2025 legislative session and adopted a package of bills that spent $30 million less than Kelly proposed.

“While the golden oldies tour makes its rounds, you can rest assured that the beat will go on in the Legislature as we keep doing the hard work of rooting out waste and abuse in government spending,” Hawkins said.

In January, the Democratic governor submitted to the Legislature as required a budget that outlined investments in education, health care, infrastructure, public safety and other areas. The Legislature, led by Hawkins and Senate President Ty Masterson, a candidate for governor, built a separate budget plan designed to minimize Kelly’s influence on appropriations.

The governor’s office said the&nbsp;<a href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.governor.ks.gov%2FHome%2FComponents%2FNews%2FNews%2F618%2F/1/01010199ba798853-b5cef009-a1f0-446b-a667-d7e04d609c9e-000000/Bg2FrMWR9VDuXOkL_YsIAYRraQQPUeO5dlaMjGAOE1A=425" target="_blank">budget bill passed in April</a>&nbsp;left the state with potential long-term problems. Kelly’s statement said the budget tour was designed to gather feedback on “how to repair the damage caused by the Legislature’s reckless budget.”

Gov. Laura Kelly to launch eight-city listening tour on future state budget

The Geary USD 475 Board of Education heard from a room full of concerned citizens from Milford and Grandview Plaza Monday night on the subject of potentially closing the elementary schools in those cities. There was unanimous opposition to the idea from the public.

Dr. Beth Hudson, Board President, explained that they had an option of moving forward with hearings on the two schools. "Those hearings will not be held at this time. We'll mve forward when we have the data and information that they want to have available."

School officials will also talk with leaders in Milford and Grandview Plaza about how they can help, explained Hudson. "Correct we absolutely will."&nbsp;Brad Roether, Milford Mayor, asked the Board what the City of Milford can do to help the school district save the school in that community.

Comments from the public ranged from the school is the "daily heartbeat" of the Milford community and closing would fracture the local capitol to, "We didn't hire and elect anybody to close our school and if "you take the school out of Milford it will become a retirement home for Nebraskans." Nearby Milford Lake is known as a popular destination for some residents of Nebraska. Loud long applause followed many of the public comments.

Grandview Plaza City Clerk Janet Young commented that officials in that community found about the poential closure via social media, "are very disappointed that our school was on the chopping block on Facebook. Parents also found out on Facebook."

Advantages for closing Milford and Grandview Plaza that have been noted in the past would include a reduction in overhead expense and for transferring staff to fill vacancies within the district as 475 transitions into another school year. The closures could also possibly help the district become eligible for heavy impact aid in the future, which could help meet facility needs. 

If closures occurred at some point in the future students could be transferred to schools in Junction City. But many in the audience protested that closures would instead send students outside the district to school in Wakefield.

The Board action did include approval of a motion on a public hearing for proposed closure of the existing early childhood center facilities but those students will be at the new early childhood center in the future.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect in connection with multiple alleged crimes&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, just before 2:30a.m. Oct. 4, a 23-year-old suspect fled a traffic stop at 12th Street and Bluemont Avenue. The suspect's vehicle nearly struck a law enforcement officer. The vehicle eventually disabled. 

Jared Espinoza, 23, of Kansas City, Kan., was arrested on requested charges of flee or attempt to elude, aggravated assault, reckless driving, driving under the influence, interference with a law enforcement officer, driving while suspended and violation of restrictions on driver’s license or permit. Espinoza is being held without bond.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on child sex crime allegations.

Just before 12:30p.m. on October 3, police arrested Brian Griffith, 25, of Junction City, in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. 

This arrest stems from an original charge of aggravated solicitation of a child. Griffith was issued a total bond of $5,000 and is no longer confined in the Riley County Jail.

Griffith has been listed as a sex offender since a 2022 conviction for Aggravated indecent solicitation of a child; Sex act with a child under age 14 in Riley County, according to the Sex Offender Registry.&nbsp;

 </figure>RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on child sex crime allegations.Just before 12:30p.m. on October 3, police arrested Brian Griffith, 25, of Junction City, in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. This arrest stems from an original charge of aggravated solicitation of a child. Griffith was issued a total bond of $5,000 and is no longer confined in the Riley County Jail.Griffith has been listed as a sex offender since a 2022 conviction for Aggravated indecent solicitation of a child; Sex act with a child under age 14 in Riley County, according to the Sex Offender Registry.&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Geary County Schools USD 475 announced that Dr. Reginald Eggleston, USD 475&nbsp;Superintendent of Schools, was named the 2026 Kansas Superintendent of the Year by the Kansas School Superintendents Association on Monday morning.

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to God, my staff and to everyone across USD 475 for their dedication and commitment to making a positive impact on our students’ education, daily. This recognition would not be possible without their hard work and support. It is truly meaningful to represent not only our district, but also the state and public education as a whole,” said Eggleston.

By being named the 2026 Kansas Superintendent of the Year, Eggleston will be honored alongside fellow finalists Dr. Jessica Dain of Piper USD 202 and Jamie Rumford of Scott County USD 466 at the 2026 Superintendent of the Year Gala on Thursday, Nov. 13 in Wichita. As the 2026 Kansas Superintendent of the Year honoree, Dr. Eggleston’s application will now be submitted to the AASA, the National School Superintendents Association, for consideration as the 2026 National Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Eggleston has served as the Superintendent of Schools in USD 475 every year since 2019. During his tenure, Dr. Eggleston has overseen transformative initiatives that address the academic, social and emotional needs of all USD 475 students. His strategic vision includes robust financial planning and community partnerships, ensuring sustainable success and equity for over 7,000 students and 1,300 employees.

Dr. Eggleston is a Colonel in the Army Reserves with over 30 plus years of military experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eggleston Named Superintendent of the Year

Geary County Commissioners received an update on a new rural fire brush truck on Monday. The work to equip the truck is about 99% complete.

The cost for the County to equip the truck will total about $100,000 but Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges noted the the cost of having a fire manufacurer do it would have been about $225,000. So there was a financial savings.

Also, from the Rual Fire Department, this is Fire Prevention Week. Check your smoke alarms.

Year to date as of the end of September there have been 97 fire calls, compared to 78 at the same time one year ago. There were calls in September this year.

USD 475 announced that the Blue Jay Marching Band performed well at K-State’s Central States Marching Festival. The band earned an overall 1 Superior rating, earning a 1 Superior rating in all 5 judged categories (music, marching, general effect, color guard, percussion).&nbsp;

 September was slightly warmer than normal and depending on where you were in the region, either wetter, or drier, than normal. September started with well below normal temperatures for the first third of the month, but then warmer temperatures prevailed for the remainder of the month.      

The average daily high for September was 80.7, which was three tenths of a degree above normal. The average overnight low temperature was 60.8, 3.3 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 70.7 which is 1.8 degrees above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 91 degrees which was reached on both the 12th and the 14th. The lowest temperature for the month was the crisp 48 degrees on the morning of the 6th. This was the first sub 50 degree reading since the morning low of 49 on May 6th. There was one temperature record set during September. The high temperature of 64 degrees on the 5th set a new record low high temperature for that date. The old record was 66 degrees set in 2014. The monthly mean temperature was right within the expected range for September. The hottest September was in 1954 with a quite warm 78.1 degree monthly mean temperature. The coldest September was in 1974 with a 61.1 monthly mean temperature.      

Rainfall was once again spaced nicely through the first three weeks of the month before turning dry in the last week. Official rainfall at Milford Lake was 3.43 inches which is above the average for September of 2.85 inches. Year to date we have received 29.31 inches of precipitation. Normal for the first nine months of the year is 28.50 inches. The wettest September was in 1967 when 13.28 inches of rain flooded the region. The driest September was in 1947 when a mere 0.24 inches of rain was the finally tally.      

October brings a noticeable change in temperatures with rapidly shortening hours of daylight. During October we will lose almost one hour and fifteen minutes of daylight. Average daily highs begin the month around 75 and by Halloween day we have dropped to 61 degrees. The average overnight low on October 1st is 51 degrees and by the 31st it has fallen to 39 degrees. Our average October precipitation is 2.85 inches. This occurs as primarily rain as long term average October snowfall is only one tenth of an inch.      

Our average first frost is on October 19th, but it has been slowly moving later and can be as late as November 13th. Over the last 40 years, the 30-year moving average for first fall frost date has gone from October 16th to October 22nd, nearly a full week later. In that same time frame the average growing season (number of days from the last frost in the spring to the first frost in the fall) has increased from 182 days to 194 days showing that last spring frosts are occurring earlier and first fall frosts are happening later, a strong indication of a warming climate.

September 2025 Junction City Area Weather Summary

Governor Laura Kelly on Friday announced 14 appointments to the Kansas Rural Health Innovation Alliance (KRHIA), a newly created alliance of stakeholders tasked with overseeing the application and implementation of Kansas’ Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP).&nbsp;

The passage of H.R. 1, which instituted significant funding and coverage cuts to Medicaid and further threatens the viability of rural hospitals, also included the $50 billion for the Rural Health Transformation Program.&nbsp;

“The Kansas Rural Health Innovation Alliance will play an instrumental role in ensuring that Kansas communities receive the maximum support and funding for their rural hospitals and health care facilities that stand to lose so much from federal funding cuts,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The organizations selected for the alliance have demonstrated an understanding of the challenges rural communities face in accessing health care, and a commitment to solving those challenges. I look forward to working with them as we navigate this important process.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

KRHIA will work with Kansas’ RHTP application development team as it advances through the application process and distribution of RHTP funding. The RHTP application must be submitted by November 5 and then the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will announce the funding awards by December 31.&nbsp;

Gov. Kelly announces Kansas Rural Health Innovation Alliance appointments

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on child sex crime allegations.

On Sunday, deputies with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew Jordan Schaecher, 29, of Herington, Kansas on a warrant for Internet trading in child pornography, aggravated Internet trading in child pornography, and sexual exploitation of a child, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office began the investigation after receiving tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. 

During the investigation, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 800 Block of W Day Street, Herington, Kansas on Sunday. The Herington Police Department assisted in the execution of the search warrant at the residence. Additional search warrants were executed and the warrant was then issued for his arrest. Schaecher was booked into the Dickinson County Detention Facility.
