On Tuesday night Junction City Commissioner Al Gordon addressed the case involving his recent arrest and misdemeanor Domestic Battery charge against him. "I know people have been looking for a statement for events that's gone on my behalf. I want to say that I maintain my innocence and look forward to presenting my case in court."

The Geary USD 475 Board of Education has approved the 2026-2027 school year calendar for the district.&nbsp;

In 2026-2027 the first day for educators would be August 5 and the first full day for students August 12. The last day for winter break would be December 18 and students would return to the classroom on January 5. There would be eight professional development days.

The last half day for students would be May 21, but there would not be any school for students that day at JCHS.

School board gives calendar approval

The Junction City Commission has voted 4-0 to accept the resignation of Mayor Jeff Underhill.

The City will now seek to fill the seat. According to City Manager Kim Zimmerman if you are interested in serving bring your resume to his office by next Tuesday. That provides time for the current commissioners to review the resumes.&nbsp;

According to City Attorney Britain Stites the City has until March 3rd to fill the vacancy. There are approximately 11 months remaining on the term.

Underhill submitted his resignation after a blank recall petition was submitted last week alleging&nbsp; misconduct while in office,&nbsp; revoking of his insurance license due to fraud and deception. Underhill resigned before action to verify the petition and collect signatures had been taken.

The vice mayor, Pat Landes, can fill in as mayor while the commissioner vacancy is being filled. The mayor's spot will be filled in the future by a vote of the city commission.

For decades, there has been a general understanding of the coalitions that define the two parties.

The wealthy and college educated leaned Republican, while the less educated, working class, and the disadvantaged supported Democrats.

We knew generally what to expect from both sides.

The college educated and affluent are drifting leftward. The working class and those without a college degree are moving right. The so-called “diploma divide” has arrived.

The divide first took shape in 2008, when Obama carried college educated voters and McCain won those without a college degree.

Since then, the split has expanded considerably. College educated whites now comprise a plurality of the Democrat coalition, reaching nearly 40 percent of the total Democrat presidential vote. A majority of the college educated, in fact, voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 while a majority without a college degree voted for Donald Trump. And, for the first time since the advent of reliable exit polling, the Republican candidate won the lowest income group – under $50,000 while the Democrat secured the highest income category – $100,000 plus.

This helps explain why Biden pushed so hard for student loan forgiveness and approved tax credits for electric vehicles.

It also sheds light on Trump’s support for tariffs and a no tax on tips plan.

As new coalition members join, they shape the parties’ cultures which are showcased every four years during party conventions.

In 2020, Democrats choose Pulitzer Prize winning author and presidential historian Jon Meacham and former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD to deliver remarks on the final evening of their convention. By contrast, Republicans featured Franklin Graham, son of Christian evangelist Billy Graham, and Dana White CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

White was spotlighted again in 2024, this time presenting Trump to convention delegates. Former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan and Teamster president Sean O’ Brien also received coveted primetime slots.

The party transformations have impacted Kansans as well. Wealthy and well educated Kansas counties now represent opportunities for Democrats.

Johnson County, a historical stronghold of Republicans, is experiencing a noticeable shift toward Democrats. In 2008, Obama secured nearly 45 percent of the county’s vote, reaching the highest percentage by a Democrat since FDR in 1932.

Hillary Clinton nearly equaled that percentage in 2016 and Biden surpassed it with 52.7 percent in 2020, marking the first time a Democrat had won Johnson County in over 100 years.

Kamala Harris then improved on Biden’s percentage and won Riley County as well.

Less affluent and less educated counties are moving rightward.

Crawford County for example in the southeast quadrant voted for Carter in 1976, Dukakis in 1988, Clinton in 1992 and 1996. And then in 2008, Crawford joined Douglas and Wyandotte as the only counties to support Obama. But over the last four presidential contests, Crawford turned red.

Hillary Clinton’s 35 percent was the worst performance by a Democrat since 1924 – Biden and Harris managed only a modest uptick.

A grant from the Kansas State Historical Society that was announced over the weekend will help the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad’s efforts to get its prized steam locomotive back on the rails as soon as possible.The grant in the amount of $79,152 will cover part of the cost of rebuilding Santa Fe 3415, which is out of service this season as work crews rebuild the engine, a maintenance procedure required every 15 years by the Federal Railroad Administration.&nbsp;

The KSHS Heritage Trust Fund provides matching funds to help preserve properties listed in the National Record of Historic Places. Santa Fe 3415 was placed on the national record in 2011.The grant will help cover the cost of inspecting the locomotive’s boiler and replacing an intricate system of flue tubes, a process that requires outside consulting and skilled labor.&nbsp;

A crew from the Durango and Silverton steam railroad in Colorado was in Abilene last month to supervise a group of volunteers on the process of removing the old tubing and other construction tasks. About 15 volunteers from four states were in Abilene for January’s work weekend. The railroad plans to conduct organized work weekends every month until the project is completed.

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said that the railroad will need more money and volunteer hours to complete the rebuild, but work crews have done a remarkable job of dismantling the engine and carefully cataloging and storing parts. “We would like to have the engine back in service late this year,” Boelling explained. “Santa Fe 3415 figures to play a major role in Abilene’s observance of America’s 250th&nbsp;birthday in 2026, so we need to get the engine up and running. This grant will make us one step closer to completing that goal.”

Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad receives a grant

&nbsp;District Manager - Geary County Conservation District

A good crowd attended the Geary County Conservation District Annual Meeting on January 23, 2025 at the Senior Center.&nbsp; A delicious free meal was sponsored by Central National Bank, Intrust Bank, KS State Bank and Landmark Bank.&nbsp;

The meeting portion of the meeting consisted of a report of the District’s activity since the last meeting, the 2024 Financial Report and the election of Shelby Richling to serve a three year term on the Board of Supervisors.

The awarding of a Grassland Award to the Geary County Rural Fire Department.&nbsp; Chief Garry Berges and Assistant Fire Chief Curt Janke accepted the award from Board of Supervisors member Shelby Richling.&nbsp; The Fire Department was commended for backing up landowners as they conduct prescribed burns of native rangeland and the protection of rural properties during wildfire events.&nbsp;

 </figure>A good crowd attended the Geary County Conservation District Annual Meeting on January 23, 2025 at the Senior Center.&nbsp; A delicious free meal was sponsored by Central National Bank, Intrust Bank, KS State Bank and Landmark Bank.&nbsp;The meeting portion of the meeting consisted of a report of the District’s activity since the last meeting, the 2024 Financial Report and the election of Shelby Richling to serve a three year term on the Board of Supervisors.The awarding of a Grassland Award to the Geary County Rural Fire Department.&nbsp; Chief Garry Berges and Assistant Fire Chief Curt Janke accepted the award from Board of Supervisors member Shelby Richling.&nbsp; The Fire Department was commended for backing up landowners as they conduct prescribed burns of native rangeland and the protection of rural properties during wildfire events.&nbsp;

Derby Panthers sweep Junction City Blue Jays.

The Derby Panthers rolled the Junction City Lady Jays Monday night at Blue Jay Event Center, beating Junction City 80-26.

The Panthers won the opening tip and scored on their first possession and then jumped out to a 29-0 lead before Junction City freshman A'niyah Henry-Rivers made two free throws to break the scoring drought for the Lady Jay’s late in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, Derby led 41-4.

In the second quarter, another freshman for Junction City got on the scoreboard. Isabel Pruitt scored all 13 points in the quarter, including a shot at the buzzer to end the first half. Derby led at halftime 62-19.  

The entire second half was a continuously running clock, and the Panthers cruised to victory, beating the Lady Jays by a final score of 80-26.

Only two players scored on the night for Junction City, and both were freshmen. Pruitt had 15 points, and Henry-Rivers had 11.

The Lady Jays fall to 1-11 on the season. 

In a game where the Blue Jays were without head coach Nick Perez due to an illness, they fought but fell just short, losing to the Derby Panthers 55-51.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a quick start, taking a 13-6 lead, then leading 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams picked it up in the second quarter, and the Blue Jays once again took a lead into halftime, leading 26-20 over the undefeated Derby Panthers.

Right before halftime, Junction City Senior guard Jackson Austin injured his hand on a drive to the basket, where he made the shot and was fouled. Austin left the game and did not return.

The defenses for both teams picked it up in the second half, but the Blue Jays held onto a three-point lead, 37-34 going into the fourth quarter.

The Derby Panthers prevailed down the stretch when sophomore Avant Riley hit the go-ahead shot with just under a minute to go in the game. Derby led 52-51. Junction City had a couple of chances down the stretch, but the Blue Jays were called for a travel on one possession and then missed on a shot by junior Lovell Autry to tie the game with 7 seconds to go. Derby knocked down their free throws and beat Junction City 55-51. 

With the win, Derby stays undefeated and goes 13-0. JC falls to 9-4 on the year. The Blue Jays have now lost four of their last five games. 

Junction City Junior Lovell Autry scored 16 points, Senior Jeremias Cruz added 10, and senior Larkin Turner had 10 points as well. 

The next action for JC will be Friday in Junction City when the boys and girls host Topeka Hayden High School.

Measure modeled after federal legislation responding to Trump agenda item

TOPEKA — State and federal lawmakers from Kansas convened Monday at the Celtic Fox pub to celebrate legislation to exempt tipped earnings of service and hospitality workers from income taxation.

The approach at the state level would be modeled after congressional bills promoted by President Donald Trump that ditch the federal income tax on tips received by restaurant workers, servers, valets as well as bellhops, bartenders or caddies.

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson and state Sen. Caryn Tyson joined U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, also a Republican, at the pub to talk about ending taxation of tips received in the form of cash, debits or credit cards.

“The intention is to take tax off tips in Kansas,” said Masterson, of Andover. “We love that idea from the federal government. Gratuity is gratitude, right? It’s not ordinary income to somebody.”

Tyson, the Parker chair of the Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee, said matching state law to federal reform made sense. She estimated the reduction in state tax revenue could range from $4 million to $10 million annually.

“It helps simplify the tax code,” she said. “We need to help those in need, and we did that last year with legislation that we passed, especially exempting state income tax from Social Security. I look forward to getting this passed.”

Marshall, an ally of Trump in Washington, D.C., said the federal tipped-income bill should be regarded as a vehicle for making Kansas affordable again. He said the federal measure — likely to pass Congress sometime between March and June — was part of Trump’s broader strategy to promote domestic prosperity and security.

“What he’s done from the security standpoint is very self-evident on his impetus to control the border and get the illegal criminal aliens out of this country,” the U.S. senator said. “We’re here today to talk about the prosperity part of this.”

He said the federal tipped income initiative was one piece of an effort to lend a hand to hard-working taxpayers.

Overall, he said, the congressional priority in 2025 would be renewal of federal tax cuts initiated during Trump’s first term. He also said Congress and the president should consider ending the federal income tax on Social Security income.

“And, how about no taxes on overtime?” Marshall said.

The nonprofit Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated enactment of a federal exemption on tips would cost $150 billion to $250 billion over a 10-year period. The organization indicated the exemption could prompt employers and employees to reclassify ordinary income as tips to avoid paying federal income taxes.

A pending bill in the U.S. Senate would incluce a yearly $25,000 deduction cap as well as occupational limits to the exemption. The U.S. House version would limit the tipped-income exclusion from federal taxes to $20,000 annually.

Kansas GOP senators promoting bill to exempt tips from state income tax

Geary County Schools USD 475 and the Junction City Education Association have announced that Westwood Elementary kindergarten teacher Stephanie Sowell and Fort Riley Middle School sixth grade language arts teacher Mary McConnell have been named the district’s nominees for the Kansas Master Teacher Award.

Sowell was named the USD 475 Elementary Master Teacher Award nominee, while McConnell claimed the Secondary Master Teacher Award nomination. By being named USD 475’s Master Teacher Award winners, Sowell and McConnell both received a $500 check from Sunflower Bank of Junction City.

The award recipients were recognized during the USD 475 Board of Education meeting.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Sheriff's deputies in central Kansas are investigating a woman on multiple drug allegations.

On January 31, deputies responded to a call of suspicious activity on W 1st Avenue in Hope, Kansas, according to a media release from the Dickinson County Sheriff.&nbsp; 

Deputies made contact with woman at the residence and began investigating the suspicious activity. During the investigation, deputies developed probable cause that illegal drugs were present in the residence.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit was contacted to assist. Investigators applied for a search warrant which was granted and executed at the residence. While conducting the search, deputies located Methamphetamine, Marijuana, and Drug Paraphernalia.

As a result of the investigation, deputies arrested 48-year-old Beverly Lynette Hall and booked her into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on requested charges of Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Jeep Patriot driven by&nbsp; Brittany D.&nbsp; Lovelace, 32, Junction City, was westbound in the 1500 block of Old 40 Highway one mile east of Detroit, Kansas.

The Jeep crossed the center line, entered the south ditch, stuck the railroad tracks and rolled onto its roof

EMS transported Lovelace and a 1-year-old passenger to the hospital in Abilene. Lovelace and the child were both properly restrained, according to the KHP.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement in central Kansas captured a suspect wanted for murder in Kansas City.

On Sunday morning, February 2, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle in the ditch in the area of K-15 Highway and 2900 Avenue, north of Abilene, according to a media release from the Dickinson County Sheriff.

 A deputy responded to the motorist assist and made contact with a man later identified as 50-year-old Armando Navarro of Kansas City, Missouri.

 The vehicle was out of the roadway and Navarro advised he was waiting for a tow truck. The deputy then left the scene but told Navarro he would check on him later.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was later notified that Navarro was a suspect in a triple homicide that occurred on February 2, in Kansas City, Missouri. Deputies returned to the area and confirmed the suspect was still with the vehicle.

Additional deputies arrived as well as troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol. While awaiting the arrival of an armored vehicle from the Junction City Police department, deputies observed the subject leaving the area on 2900 and heading towards K-15 Highway. 

The Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit and another deputy contacted the subject at 2900 Avenue and K-15 Highway. A brief foot pursuit ensued and the K-9 was deployed.&nbsp; Navarro surrendered to the K-9 unit and was taken into custody by deputies.

Navarro is being held at the Dickinson County Detention Center awaiting extradition back to Missouri.

Wanted triple-homicide suspect captured in central Kansas


On
Jan. 29  Kansas Senator
Mike Thompson (district 10) has filed Senate Concurrent Resolution
1607 (SCR1607) for Kansas to join the states calling for a convention
for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S.
Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan,
nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).


SCR1607&nbsp;
has a groundswell of support in the Kansas legislature. Many state
lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor
Senator Thompson's resolution.


"It's
time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent, "
said Philip Blumel, USTL President. "Term limits will help
restore trust in our government and ensure that power is returned to
the hands of the citizens."

&nbsp;When
SCR1607 passes both the house and senate chambers this session,
Kansas will join other states in the call to for a national
convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the
U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions
and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be
ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.

Jan. 29 Kansas Senator
Mike Thompson (district 10) has filed Senate Concurrent Resolution
1607 (SCR1607) for Kansas to join the states calling for a convention
for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S.
Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan,
nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
SCR1607&nbsp;
has a groundswell of support in the Kansas legislature. Many state
lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor
Senator Thompson's resolution.
"It's
time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent, "
said Philip Blumel, USTL President. "Term limits will help
restore trust in our government and ensure that power is returned to
the hands of the citizens."

State Senator files resolution to propose congressional term limits 

The Junction City Commission meeting agenda Tuesday night includes acceptance of the resignation of Mayor Jeff Underhill. 

Underhill has confirmed that he does plan to resign. "I don't have a passion for this any more."

&nbsp;Underhill was elected to the mayor's post for the coming year by his fellow commissioners in January.&nbsp; A blank&nbsp; petition was filed last Friday calling for him to be recalled from office as a city commissioner but it had not yet been acted on. The city commission will be in session at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 701 North Jefferson.

Junction City mayor plans to resign

Saint Francis Xavier School announced via social media that since they surpassed their food drive donation goal from last year, the final prize to all students and staff will be no school on Friday, February 28th. 

All 2,287 items will be delivered to the Junction City Food Pantry this week

Optimist International is an international service club organization with almost 3,000 clubs and over 80,000 members in more than 20 countries dedicated to “Bringing Out The Best In Kids.” February 6, 2025, has been designated by Optimist International as “Optimist Day.”

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club has quarterly fundraisers at JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and receives donations from individuals, businesses and contributions made through Match Day in collaboration with the Greater Geary Community Foundation. The money raised by the local club goes directly to 16 different Geary County youth organizations. Three scholarships are also annually made available to graduating seniors to help them reach their academic or career goals. The local Optimists also have chartered two Junior Optimist International (JOI) Clubs with one each at Junction City High School and St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools. These two junior clubs are the only two actively involved JOI Clubs in Kansas.

All clubs in the international organization base their work on “The Optimist Creed” with 10 promises made in the creed. These statements help guide each member to improve themselves, their community and their club.

In these challenging times, it is important to not only be alert to what is going on in our communities, state, nation and world, but to also be willing to have a positive impact on one individual at a time. This can be done by simple acts of kindness, a smile, an encouraging word and or a donation of time, skill or money to help others in need.

Being an optimist every day and not just on February 6 makes a better world. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet beginning at 6:30 AM. Anyone who shares the focus of the club is invited to attend and become an active member.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent ban on the use of a popular food dye will create a new challenge for home bakers aiming for a signature cherry red color in candy, cakes, icings and other food products.

Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said there are foods that can substitute for FD&amp;C Red No. 3 – such as beets, cranberries, raspberries and more – “but these may also add flavors to food that may not be wanted."

She added that food manufacturers and researchers will look at how these new colors react with other ingredients or temperature changes.

The FDA announced on Jan. 15 that it is banning the use of FD&amp;C Red No. 3 in any food product or drugs that are ingested. The government agency cited two studies indicating cancer in laboratory male rats that were exposed to high levels of the dye, due to a rat-specific hormonal mechanism.

The government agency cited two studies indicating cancer in laboratory male rats that were exposed to high levels of the dye, due to a rat-specific hormonal mechanism.To date, there are no scientific studies that have shown a connection between consuming FD&amp;C Red No. 3 and cancer in humans, but a provision within the U.S. Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (called the Delaney Clause) prohibits the use of food or color additives if they are proven to cause cancer in humans or animals.The FDA will require manufacturers using FD&amp;C Red No. 3 to reformulate their products by Jan. 15, 2027 or Jan. 18, 2028, depending on the size of the business. Imported foods may not contain this ingredient.If shopping for food colors, consumers can avoid products containing FD&amp;C Red No. 3 by reading the ingredient statement on the packaging, according to Blakeslee.“Look for FD&amp;C Red No. 3, Red 3, or if the product is imported, it may be called erythrosine,” she said. “FD&amp;C Red No. 3 is a certified color additive and it must be specified in the ingredient statement if it is included in the product.”Other examples of color substitutes for FD&amp;C Red No. 3 include red beet extract or paprika extract. Blakeslee said future decisions on food additives by the FDA will be based on the best science available.
