Junction City Expo is scheduled Thursday

Fall sports season has officially begun, as teams across the state had their first practice back on Aug. 19.&nbsp; With over a week of practices already completed, many Junction City High School Athletics teams will compete in either jamborees or scrimmages to prepare for their first games/meets.&nbsp;

JCHS Varsity Volleyball - Jamboree on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Manhattan High School. Other teams competing include Rock Creek, Manhattan and Wamego. The jamboree begins at 5:00.&nbsp;&nbsp;

JCHS Boys Varsity Soccer - Blue and White scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Blue Jay Stadium.&nbsp;

Future Blue Jay Night - The JCHS Varsity Football team is hosting Future Blue Jay Night at Blue Jay Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30. The event will be from 5:30-6:00 p.m.&nbsp;

The sale will be on Friday, Aug. 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 31 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.&nbsp;

City Public Works announces Labor Day sanitation schedule

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club met at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet showroom on Wednesday, August 28 to hear a presentation by Ty Zimmerman, Area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). FCA was established in 1954 by Don McClanen. The headquarters for FCA is now located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ty has been in the position as Area Director for 6 years having graduated from Junction City High School (JCHS), Kansas State University, employment with USD 475 and coaching with his father, Randall Zimmerman, at JCHS. Ty works with people in the North Central Kansas counties of Brown, Clay, Cloud, Geary, Jewell, Lincoln, Marshall, Mitchell, Nemaha, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, Wabaunsee and Washington.

Mr. Zimmerman began by asking members who had played sports in school and “if they remembered a coach for the impact had on them? Billy Graham said that “One coach will impact more people in a year than the average person will in an entire lifetime.” In fact, Ty also said that he remembers the play called the “bomberooski”. Curtis Gray, who was Ty’s football coach at Junction City Middle School. Coach Gray used the play when Ty was the quarterback of the team. All the players would go down field at one time and Ty would then throw the ball to any teammate to catch it. Even with Ty’s extensive experience with numerous coaches in high school, college and having tried out for the New Orleans Saints, a National Football League team, he still remembers his middle school coach.

Ty went onto explain the vision of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which is to “exist to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. Their methods are to Engage coaches and athletes with the Gospel; Equip them to know Jesus and Empower them to make Him known! Their mission is to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.”

The strategies or environments in which the mission is to be accomplished is through camps, one on one discipleship and huddles. Camps are for third through eighth grade youth. High school and college leaders meet in the summer and fall with young people to share in growing their faith and teach discipleship. Huddles are held on middle school and high school campuses during the school year and are led by students in studies and personal growth through the message of Jesus Christ.

RILEY COUNTY -Law enforcement are investigating a motorcycle theft in Riley County.

Just before 5p.m. Tuesday, police filed a&nbsp;report of motor vehicle theft in the 1200 block of Bertrand, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 21-year-old man reported his black and yellow Honda motorcycle was taken by an unknown suspect in the overnight hours. Total loss associated with this report is approximately $2,000.

RCPD investigating reported motorcycle theft

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;As K-State puts the final touches on its preparation for the season opener against UT Martin on Saturday inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium, fans are alerted of the following construction projects in and around the Manhattan area that could affect travel plans.

I-70 at Junction City –&nbsp;The pavement replacement project between Exit 295 on the west and mile marker 300 on the east of Junction City will again impact football game traffic this season. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction and is head-to-head. Fans are to note that westbound exit ramps 296, 298 and 299 are closed. The speed limit is reduced in this area and delays are anticipated with heavy gameday traffic. Kansas Department of Transportation officials suggest that fans driving to Manhattan from the south or west who typically utilize I-70 through Junction City consider using an alternate route.

I-70 at McDowell Creek Road –&nbsp;In addition, beginning September 9 prior to the Arizona game on Friday, September 13, the exit at McDowell Creek Road will close as the bridge over I-70 is replaced. Traffic on I-70 in this area will be reduced to one lane through the work zone. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2025.

Kimball Avenue –&nbsp;Construction on Kimball Avenue has been completed and the roadway is open to east-west traffic at the Denison Avenue intersection. However, shipping delays related to the new traffic signal for the intersection will prevent Denison from reopening to left turns. Only “right-in” and “right-out” southbound traffic will be allowed initially for safety reasons and through traffic on Kimball will not stop.

Denison Avenue –&nbsp;Denison will remain closed south of Kimball to the intersection to Olympic Drive (Recreation Complex entrance) during the football season. Fans who normally utilize Denison to access parking lots along Kimball will need to use College or Manhattan avenues. Parking for Lot E4, VIP and the student tailgate area is accessible from Denison through Olympic Drive.

Anderson Avenue –&nbsp;Anderson Avenue from Seth Child Road to Wreath Avenue is under construction, a project that will last through the fall. Traffic is one lane in both directions, so fans are to expect delays in this area.

All parking lots around Bill Snyder Family Stadium open five hours prior to kickoff, which will be 1 p.m., this Saturday. As always, fans are encouraged to arrive early as pregame traffic could become congested.

A free shuttle sponsored by the K-State Union, Housing and Dining Services and K-State Campus Store is available to fans with free parking in the K-State Parking Garage. The shuttle begins two hours prior to kickoff from the south circle on M.L.K. Jr., Drive, between the K-State Parking Garage and the Union. Passengers will be dropped off near the Jardine Plaza Neighborhood. Return trips resume with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, and rides will continue until approximately one hour after the end of the game.

K-State Fans Advised of On-Going Road Construction

Over this past weekend Geary County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call in the County for a gentleman who had been thrown off a horse and needed assistance for possible injuries. It was discovered that the man had lost both of his hearing aids when falling from the horse in a grassy pasture. 

Upon hearing this, Deputy James Regalado, and his K-9 Klesto, responded and completed an evidence search in the pasture, locating the hearing aids approximately ten feet apart.The hearing aids were returned to the subject. He was transported by EMS with serious injuries from the fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, just before 4:30p.m. Monday police arrested 27-year-old Trevor Smith of Conway Springs in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road. 

 Smith was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear.  The original charges in this matter are for distribution of opiates/opium/narcotics/stimulants, distribution of marijuana, distribution of cannabinoids, and distribution of a controlled substance within a controlled facility. 

Smith remains jailed on a $16,000 bond. He has a previous drug distribution conviction, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections

K-State health expert says routines can help youth manage stress

There is, for sure, a lot of excitement associated with the beginning of another school year.

But Elaine Johannes, the Kansas Health Foundation’s Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, says parents should also be aware that their teenager may at the same time be coping with anxiety and stress.

“The way that middle school and high school students do school today is different from what I did many years ago, when it meant only that we were going to school physically,” Johannes said.

Today, she said, “many of our students have remote learning part of the day – maybe at home, but maybe even at school. And then some have a dual enrollment in which they are taking college courses, perhaps at the high school, maybe remotely, or they’re driving to a nearby college campus.”

Factor in friendships, academics, sports, extra-curricular activities, a side job (for some) and more, and the onset of school is not always an easy transition for teenagers.

“When we think about back-to-school as one generalized topic,” Johannes said, “there are a lot of things that can create anxiety and stress.”

To help their teenager adjust, Johannes suggests parents establish a solid foundation at home, including a routine of sleep, a healthy diet and appropriate physical activity.

“Another part of that foundation is practice,” Johannes said. “Practice getting up, getting to school on time, getting on the Internet. The basics of success – which includes good physical and mental health – can be helped through routine, consistency and communication.”

When picking up children from school, parents may also want to avoid bombarding them with questions that reflect achievement, such as test scores or how fast they ran the mile in gym class.

“Those are things that can create more stress, too,” Johannes said.

“As parents, we should be wise with our inquiry; it could be that the child has had to answer questions all day. They don’t want to say anything more. But maybe during the evening there is time for inquiry when parents can listen to their child’s response without judging it or putting an achievement indicator on it.”

Johannes pointed to a line of research known as mattering, which she says “aims to help young people know that they matter in our lives; they matter more than a test score or getting an assignment in.”

When asking youth about their school day, Johannes suggests asking open-ended questions, such as:

“You know, we're talking about young people whose brains are not yet fully formed,” Johannes said. “So we want to give them time to develop, and we want there to be kind of a rocky development, because that young person is testing who they are, and they may not figure that out for quite a while.”

“As parents,” she adds, “we watch, we wait and we support and we figure out if our child has a talent or interest, or they change their interests because of development. So there's a bunch of back and forth between children and parents, and we don't want to push too quickly to have the young person locked in to who they are.”

KSRE: As school begins, students may face new anxiety

Local elected officials are pushing for a meeting with Fort Riley officials to talk about the Army's decision to close the Trooper Gate entrance to the Post. There have been impacts on issues ranging from busing to economics with local businesses.

Junction City Commissioner Richard Pinaire told a joint city - county - school district meeting at the C.L. Hoover Opera House that he would like to have the discussion with the military. Board of Education member Ron Johnson noted Trooper gate would be better over Grant Gate which is currently being used to transport traffic onto and off Post.

In addition to local elected officials representing the different commissions at a meeting with the Army, County Commissioner Keith Ascher observed it might be beneficial to have some congressional staff members in attendance. "We just need to have conversations, communications with Fort Riley and all the interested parties. It's probably not our call. It's more Fort Riley's call but I think they need to hear from the local community how it's affecting us and what we think."

There was a consensus to have the school district try to arrange the meeting.

While not opposed to a conversation with Fort Riley, County Commission Chair Trish Giordano said the commanding general has pretty much indicated that there is not enough manpower to run Trooper gate and a change in the decision to close it is not happening. County Commissioner Alex Tyson added missions dictate what happens on Post and decisions made on Fort Riley.

Also revealed during the discussion was that the Army planned to revaluate the Trooper Gate decision after 90 days.

Commissioner Pinaire stated part of revaluation is information and called for a meeting in about one month. He also noted that a lot of veterans are not happy about the decision to close Trooper Gate.

The Biomanufacturing Core and Training Facility is one of four state-of-the-art facilities integral to the initiative. It will also provide hands-on training for the next generation of biosecurity researchers to ensure that Kansas remains at the forefront of biomanufacturing expertise. As&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;leads advancements in biomanufacturing, it is also strengthening the state's economy by attracting jobs and top-tier industry partners to Kansas. This initiative enhances both the agricultural and public health sectors.

Geary County Booking Photos Aug. 24-26

On Saturday at 1024 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to 3710 Farnum Creed Rd., Acorns Resort for a capsized kayak. Kaden Claassen of Woodbine KS was fishing when his motorized Kayak began taking on water. 

Claassen became slightly incapacitated while trying to stay afloat when a passing pontoon boat assisted him to shore. Junction City EMS transported Claassen to Stormont Vail Flint Hills for reported minor injuries.

On Sunday at 8:37 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Rucker Rd. and Crider rd. for a semi rollover. Shania Laudemann of Woodbine was traveling west on the 5500 block of Rucker Rd. in her 2007 Peterbilt 379 when she lost control of the tractor trailer. 

The tractor trailer rolled over on its driver side where it laid. Shania was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan for reported minor injuries. TLC towing retrieved the semi-truck and trailer.

The Geary County commission will be holding an informational 2025 budget meeting on September 9th&nbsp;at 6 pm in the Geary County Commission meeting room.&nbsp; 

This will allow members of the public who are not able to attend the budget hearing at 11 a.m. that day be able to ask questions and the commission to hear comments.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Just after 4p.m. August 24, a 39-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman&nbsp; reported a renter of their property did a substantial amount of damage to the property. 

The subject is a 19-year-old man. Total loss associated with this report is approximately $1,700.&nbsp;
