DICKINSON COUNTY —Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a rural Saline County home.

Just after 2a.m. Sunday,&nbsp;crews responded to a house fire near Carlton, according to a social media report from Saline County Rural Fire District #1.

&nbsp;Dickinson County EMS checked a resident for smoke inhalation.  Additional assistance from Saline County Fire District #2 was called in to relieve personnel and help with overhaul efforts. Operations ended and the last units were released at approximately 8a.m.&nbsp; Authorities have not released a damage estimate.

Home destroyed in rural Dickinson County fire

The 40th annual Martin Luther King celebration in Junction City will include two days of activities, Sunday Jan. 19th and Monday Jan. 20th.

There will be a Gospel Music Tribute at 3 p.m. Sunday the 19th at the Second Missionary Baptist Church. That will be followed on Monday, Jan. 20th, the official holiday, with a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House. The theme for that ceremony will be "Being Non-Violent in a Violent World."

All of the events are free to the public.

MLK Day celebration is set in Junction City

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly and the Court of Appeals Nominating Commission on Friday announced the applicants for the vacancy on the Court of Appeals. The deadline to apply was 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. As of that deadline, the below individuals had submitted their applications for consideration.

Governor Kelly signed Executive Order 20-01 on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, establishing the Court of Appeals Nominating Commission.

Under Kansas law, the governor appoints judges to the Court of Appeals subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. The Commission will review each applicant’s background and qualifications, conduct interviews, and then submit three nominees for the governor to consider.

The interview schedule will be announced at a later date.

Judge among applicants for state Court of Appeals vacancy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — John Wilson with Kansas Action for Children said that one of that group's priorities for the 2025 legislative session in Topeka as it starts this week is to continue the discussion of a Child Tax Credit at the state level.

"The federal child tax credit lifted you know hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty during that pandemic era," Wilson said. "The federal child tax credit still exists but it's in a different format and families are no longer receiving that monthly payment like they received or could have received during the pandemic. Kansas is one of the states that doesn't have a state level child tax credit and last year we proposed a state child tax credit. We're going to do that again this year and it's really straightforward. It provides a tax credit to any family with eligible children and the great thing about a child tax credit is that it could be used for any types of expenses related to raising children."

An important key is to make it refundable.

"One family might need it for child care expenses another family might just need to help support rent or pay for food," Wilson said. "It's a really flexible form of supporting families and the way that we would like to see it structured is that the lower the income the household the higher the benefit because they're the ones that need it the most and importantly a child tax credit needs to be what we call refundable meaning if they're very low income and they don't have a tax liability they can still receive that tax credit."

They would also like to see it phase out with increased income.

"There wouldn't necessarily be a cliff if you will based on income," Wilson said. "It might be that the credit is slightly smaller but as long as you file a simple tax return you would receive that credit at the time you file your taxes."

The federal EITC was initially enacted in 1975.

AARP Kansas now accepting 2025 Community Challenge grant applications

The most recent January 2025 blizzard and snow accumulations have paralyzed travel. A mist followed by freezing temperatures, snow amounts up to and possibly exceeding 16 to18 inches depending on location and below freezing temperatures have not been common for us in Geary County in recent years. Some previous snowstorms are highlighted in this article.

In February 1894 there was a reference in the Union newspaper that this section of the state as well as a large portion of the country had been visited with heavy snow and cold weather. The snowfall had largely protected the growing wheat crop, and the cold weather assured a good ice crop sufficient to supply all demand for the coming season. Horse drawn Cutters were continually on the go from early morning to late in the night. Sleighing was never better anywhere in the state than it was here. It was not realized that there were so many elegant one-horse sleighs in our city until people saw them on the streets because of the snowfall. These sleighs together with the little folks on the small sleds, made the streets of our city one vast scene of merriment and enjoyable sport.

On April 4,1920 a winter storm hit Junction City. Easter Sunday was on that day.

It was in1960 when 40 inches of snow fell during the period from February 20 through March 16. The heaviest single snow in that period was seven inches on February 21.

On February 22,1971 a foot of snow blanketed the Junction City area. It began snowing at 9:00 AM and continued until Sunday night causing streets and highways to be clogged with snow drifts and activities in the area were at a standstill. Reports of motorists being stranded when their cars were unable to move through the heavy snow were common. Businesses and schools were closed. (Many offices and stores would have been closed for President’s Day, which had been moved to the third Monday in February that year). Fort Riley was placed on a non-duty status, with all training suspended, and the only activity was for essential guard and similar duties with a decision to be made about any change in status to be made before Tuesday. It was reported that this was the heaviest snowfall in recent years.

Snowstorms like those mentioned above occurred on February 13, 1978. Prior to a decision to keep schools open, USD 475 officials drove the roads as a test before the decision was made by Superintendent Kenneth Hauge. This practice was in place many years later.

On November 27,1983 the high was 56 degrees, and the low was 33 degrees. Ten inches of snow fell that day.

These are some of the snowstorm highlights in our local history. The weather in Kansas can quickly change and become dangerous. Be safe and stay warm. We can be thankful for road crews, first responders, crews who keep our electricity on and community members who provide food and shelter for those in need. That is what our community does!

The following advisories identify types of fish, or other aquatic species, that should be eaten in limited quantities or, in some cases, avoided altogether because of contamination. General advice and internet resources are provided to aid the public in making informed decisions regarding the benefits and risks associated with eating locally caught fish from Kansas waters.&nbsp;

There are many health benefits associated with going outside and catching and consuming fish; however, all fish contain some amount of mercury. Consumption of mercury-rich fish can harm the development of fetuses, nursing babies, and growing children. As a result, anyone who routinely eats fish or serves fish to children, including store-bought fish, should carefully consider the type and amount of fish eaten. Therefore, mercury-sensitive individuals (women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant, and children 17 or younger)&nbsp;should follow the guidelines presented below for eating Kansas-caught fish.&nbsp;

Recently elected Geary County officials will take their oath of office at 10 a.m. Monday at the County Office Building.&nbsp;

Following that the commission will conduct their annual reorganization including election of a chairman and vice chairman plus appointments of commissioners to public boards.

The governing's body meeting is scheduled from 10 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Geary County Commissioners this week publicly thanked the county's public works and sheriff's department employees for their work during the recent winter storm. They did everything from clearing roads to helping motorists during the snow.

Commissioners thanked Alex Tyson for his leadership during his four years on the governing body. Thursday was his final meeting as a member of the commission.

The Chair for the governing body Trish Giordano noted Tyson did a lot. A big accomplishment for the past four years involved saving the hospital. Stormont Vail assumed operations, succeeding Geary Community Hospital.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Foundation for Agriculture is now accepting applications for 2025 scholarship awards.

“Supporting education is one of the core missions of the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture,” says KFB President Joe Newland. “We are so proud to support the next generation of leaders in agriculture as they continue their education at institutions across the state.”

The program offers up to 47 scholarships at universities, community and technical colleges in Kansas for students who demonstrate a commitment to agriculture, leadership and community involvement. To apply, students or their parents must have an active Kansas Farm Bureau membership.

Public Works has revised the weekly sanitation pickup schedule due to the snowy road conditions. Public Works crews will try and combine the sanitation pickup routes for this week starting Friday, January 10th. The revised schedule is posted below.

Trash/garbage pick-up will be picked up the following workdays as follows:

Tuesday &amp; Wednesday’s pickup day will be Friday, January 10th

Wednesday &amp;Thursday’s pickup day will be Saturday, January 11th

Thursday’s pickup day will be Sunday, January 12th

Friday’s pickup day will be Monday, January 13th

Monday’s pickup day will be Tuesday, January 14th

Tuesday &amp; Wednesday’s pickup day on Wednesday, January 15th

City curbside customers need to ensure that their poly cart is placed at the curbside where sanitation workers have easy access to the cart. Sanitation workers will not be pulling the cart through or over snow drifts.

This sanitation pickup schedule is subject change due to the weather conditions.

In order to ensure pick-up, your trash should be set out by 6 AM.

Public Works will not be doing any special pickups until we are back on the normal sanitation schedule.

Sanitation workers will not be pulling the cart through or over snow drifts.This sanitation pickup schedule is subject change due to the weather conditions.In order to ensure pick-up, your trash should be set out by 6 AM.Public Works will not be doing any special pickups until we are back on the normal sanitation schedule.

This Saturday, January 11, 2025, being the 2nd Saturday of the month, the Geary County Landfill &amp; HHW/Recycling Center were scheduled to be open.

However, with the recent weather events and recycling services being off their normal schedule, we will not have these areas open. The Geary County Transfer Station will remain open.

Geary County Public Works announces schedule change for this weekend

--Geary USD 475 will be closed Friday.&nbsp;

--USD 481&nbsp; Rural Vista will be closed Friday&nbsp;

--USD 473 Chapman schools will be canceled Friday

--USD 383 Manhattan - Ogden will be on a 2-hour delay Friday. District officials are&nbsp;watching the potential for winter weather Thursday evening. The National Weather Service briefing received on Thursday forecasts the area to receive a dusting - 1 inch of snow. Theweather team will be checking roads early Friday. 

The Manhattan area is currently not in a Winter Weather Advisory. If something changes, they will alert you through ParentSquare no later than 7:00 am Friday morning.
