The JC Breakfast Optimist Club met at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet showroom on August 21 to hear from Brewel Currie on the work being done by Street Prophets. Brewel is a Junction City High School graduate and is the founder/CEO and speaker for the Street Prophets.

He told the Optimists that he “grew up in a working-class home”. Brewel struggled as a youth with morals, working up to his potential in school, and following his parent’s rules and guidance. At one point during his rebellious years he ended up in jail. It was at that point in his life that Brewel found God and decided it was more important to see others do good. He learned that life was not just about him and his wants, but about helping others.

Brewel mentors in prisons, gives motivational speeches to sports teams, mentors youth at the Geary County Juvenile Detention Center and at the Job Corps Center in Manhattan and other places where there is a need. While at Job Corps, Brewel kept asking himself and his God “why was he being put there?” He believed the answer was that he should “stop praying about this – he was put there for a reason.”

Brewel believes in encouraging youth and adults to “not worry about what people think, but do God’s work, empower yourself and build on your potential - but also put in the work” it takes to continuously improve.

Mr. Currie also shared he believes “we are living in challenging times and it is important to stay focused on the good in others and the world.” We all need to work together to improve ourselves and help others do the same.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet showroom. Meetings are open to everyone beginning with a light breakfast at 6:30 AM. The meeting begins at 6:50 AM and concludes at 7:30 AM.

The Milford Lake Corps of Engineers will be conducting an Archery Draw for 40 deer hunting locations on August 24th on the front lawn of the Corps Office located at 5203 N. Hwy. K-57 Hwy which is on the south end of the Milford Dam.

Registration for the draw will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the draw for a hunting location at 9:30 a.m.

Hunting locations and permits include: Milford Fish Hatchery 1 permit, Former K-State Lease 4 permits, East Rolling Hills Park 2 permits, West Rolling Hills Park 5 permits, Curtis Creek Park 10 permits, School Creek Park 10 permits, South Timber Creek Park 2 permits, North Timber Creek Park 4 permits, Farnum Creek Park 2 permits.

All hunters must be present, and a Photo Id is required to register.

Corps of Engineers will hold an Archery Draw

Junction City Commissioner Richard Pinaire&nbsp; noted Tuesday evening he would like to see the recent Army closure of the Trooper Gate entrance to Fort Riley reconsidered. He suggested it could perhaps be a topic for an upcoming joint city - county - school district meeting. He added local officials are stakeholders and suggested a meeting of officials with Fort Riley.

Major General Monte Rone announced the closure and that the Grant Ave. entrance to the Post would be open 24 hours seven days a week for traffic.

Mayor Pat Landes said that he had been in discussion with Rone and the Army had done traffic studies that showed most of the traffic was going through the Grant Gate. "The company that prioritized security at the gates didn't have enough personnel and cost to pay for keeping both gates open." Landes noted that the Army was not moving off of the decision. Pinaire replied, "That's pretty tragic."

Geary County Commissioners also recently expressed concern and disagreement with the closure of the Trooper Gate entrance. One concern was about the economic impact of the closure on businesses near that entrance.

RCPD: Manhattan subcontractor reports $120K forgery, theft

WASHINGTON —On Wednesday, President Joe Biden. declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas and ordered Federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe storm, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding on May 19, 2024, according to a statement from the White House.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storm, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding in the counties of Barton, Ellsworth, Harvey, Hodgeman, Lincoln, Morris, Ottawa, Pawnee, Reno, Rush, Russell, Stafford, Wabaunsee, and Wyandotte.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Mr. Andrew P. Meyer of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.&nbsp;

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Groundbreaking for the new USD 475 Early Childhood Center has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Bilateral Agreements: Mechanisms of Peace  ﻿Lunch & Learn Series

The Junction City Little Theater will present their production of&nbsp;A Chorus Line the next two weekends at the C.L. Hoover Opera House.

The show examines one day in the lives of 17 dancers, all vying for a spot in the “chorus line” of a Broadway musical. After the first round of cuts, Zach, the director and choreographer, asks each dancer to speak about themselves. 

The audience begins to see each dancer’s individuality. The Geary Community Healthcare Foundation announced that through donors, sponsors, and attendees, their Boots and Buckles Fundraiser raised $15,254 for the Geary County Food Pantry. 

The R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation provided a match, so the total amount raised for the food pantry was $22,881.

(JUNCTION CITY, KS) - Konza Prairie Community Health Center is celebrating Community Care Clinic Month with a food drive to stock the Konza Cupboard &amp; Food Pantry located at 361 Grant Ave in Junction City.

The Konza Cupboard is a blessing box outside of the clinic and the food pantry is located inside the clinic, providing access to Konza patients while they are at an appointment. Patients who visit the food pantry can choose healthy options to assist in managing their health conditions.

“The Konza Cupboard and Food Pantry run primarily on donations and limited monthly funding,” said Kalie Kipp, Konza Dietitian and coordinator of the food drive. “Many patients I have personally helped are beyond grateful for the additional service we provide.”

The Konza Cupboard and Food Pantry serve hundreds of people each year and donations are always welcome. The clinic has set a big goal to reach 600 pounds of food during August. All Konza staff are working together, donating food and hygiene items to contribute to this effort.

The public is invited to donate food and personal hygiene items to help stock the Konza Cupboard. Donations can be dropped off at the Konza Clinic Medical Check-in Desk – 361 Grant Ave in Junction City.

Kansas’ population is expected to grow by nearly 500,000 people in the next 50 years, and non-white residents are predicted to drive that growth, a research center forecasts.

A report from Wichita State University’s Center for Economic Development and Business Research said the state is predicted to add more than 469,000 residents by 2072, which will amount to a 16% increase from the state’s 2022 population.

It’s a sign that Kansas’ population is breaking out of a period of stagnancy, said Jonathan Norris, a research economist at the center, which is a part of the university’s W. Frank Barton School of Business.

The state’s metropolitan areas — Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita — make up the lionshare of the projected growth, Norris said. But that’s because the state’s rural areas are finding their balance.

Lumped together, rural counties are projected to decline, and metropolitan areas are projected to grow, but historical forecasts indicate rural areas are now experiencing less decline than years past, Norris said.

“The landscape is going to change,” Norris said. “One of the big changes we’re seeing is the increased diversification in those rural areas, too.”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://cedbr.org/forecast-blog/population-forecast" target="_blank">forecast</a>, which was funded by the Kansas City, Missouri-based nonprofit the Patterson Family Foundation, analyzes mortality, fertility and migration rates along with age and race data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Surveys to reach its population predictions.

Nearly every county in Kansas will see an increase in non-white residents in the next 50 years, the forecast said. Growth rates regardless of race or ethnicity are expected to increase across the state, but Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian and Pacific-Islander Kansans, among others, will see higher rates of growth than their white counterparts, the forecast indicates.

Norris attributes this to a few things. In part, white Kansans are likely to have lower birth rates than other racial or ethnic groups. It’s also because people are changing the way they fill out their census forms, Norris said. More and more people are identifying with more than one race or ethnicity.

The state’s current population is around 2.9 million people, according to the 2020 census. Per the center’s predictions, it would exceed 3 million in 2032 and reach 3.4 million in 2072.

Births in Kansas have steadily decreased in the past 20 years with few exceptions, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/29633/Preliminary-Birth-Report-2022-PDF" target="_blank">2023 preliminary birth report</a>.&nbsp; However, the center’s forecast predicts the number of children younger than 5 years old will increase by nearly 24% in the next 50 years. The center believes the “growing birth counts will be a powerful driver of population growth beyond 2072,” a Monday news release said.

Kansans older than 65 are projected to experience the most growth in the next 50 years among all age groups with a nearly 23% increase. Population change among younger people — 20 years old and below — will see the most limited growth with a roughly 10% increase.

“Broadly speaking, the changing age composition just means that you’re going to have some different considerations and needs for the workforce,” Norris said.

The forecast, which will be updated annually through 2030, reveals an overall positive outlook on Kansas’ future population changes, Norris said.

He added: “I think this reflects a lot of optimism for the direction of the state over the next 50 years.”

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Revenue announced today that the new standard license plate design, “To the Stars,” is now available. The new design was overwhelmingly chosen by Kansans in a December 2023 public vote, winning 53% of the total vote. The “To the Stars” design will replace the current “Ad Astra” standard license plate designs.

The design features the Kansas Statehouse Dome within a cutout of the state set against a blue, white, and yellow gradient background. Paying tribute to our state motto, “Ad Astra per Aspera,” the phrase “To the Stars” is inscribed along the bottom of the design.

The new design will be used for all new plate issuances, including replacements for any remaining embossed plates. Kansans, who were issued a plate with the “Ad Astra” design as the replacement for their embossed plate, will not be reissued another plate with the new design. However, any Kansan who has the “Ad Astra” design but wants the “To the Stars” design can visit their local county treasurer's office to transfer their registration to a plate with the new design.

Monday at 3:58 p.m. Deputies responded to N. Madison St and W. 7th St. for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Ramar Byrd of Milford was traveling west on 7th St. in his 2006 Chevy Silverado when Ksos Moses of Junction City was traveling north on Madison St. in his 2013 Chevy Traverse and ran a stop sign colliding with Ramar. 

Ksos was transported to Via Christi and Ramar was evaluated on scene by EMS and released.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.

Just after 3p.m. Monday, officers filed a report of theft in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Walmart reported an unknown suspect left the store with approximately $1,099 in unpaid merchandise.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.Just after 3p.m. Monday, officers filed a report of theft in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.Walmart reported an unknown suspect left the store with approximately $1,099 in unpaid merchandise. The Geary Community Healthcare Foundation is hosting its 24th annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament. The GCHF golf tournament will be on Friday, September 20, at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

To participate, each player must be over 21 years of age. For a single player, registration is $110. For a team of four, the registration fee is $440. The Geary Community Healthcare Foundation Golf Tournament will raise funds for the Reviving a Life Project in Geary County.

With registration,  a gift bag, snacks, soft drinks, water, and beer are provided. Lunch will be assisted by the Junction City Fire Department, and a steak dinner will be sponsored by Hi Tech Interiors. There will also be a raffle, cash, and hole prizes for winners.

Morning slots still available for GCHF Fall Classic Golf Tournament

Former USD 475 employee David Wild has issued a statement following publication of a recent&nbsp; article by The Shield, about money he received for the 2023-2024 school year while serving as a construction&nbsp;grants program manager and part-time liaison with Fort Riley for USD 475.

At the request of JC Post Wild has issued a statement to clarify the situation.

Wild wrote. "The Intergovernmental Support Agreement between Fort Riley and USD 475 is meeting with success beyond original expectations. The IGSA, a vision of congress in its annual National Defense Authorization Act, allows Fort Riley to accomplish mission support through USD475 contractors. The program uses more efficient State of Kansas rather than Federal Procurement protocols and statutes.

To continue supporting program expansion, the USD475 Board of Education bought out my employment contract and allowed it to expire. The Sentinel piece does not accurately reflect the buyout. Regardless, I am thankful for the financial consideration made by the Board towards my efforts to successfully pilot, stand up, and grow the program. This strategic move by the Board enables the district to facilitate IGSA program growth beyond my individual capacity as a district employee. Growth of the program is a benefit to the Army, USD475, and all of us as taxpayers. Fort Riley and USD475 are leading the way with Army G4 advising other Installations to replicate the initiative. &nbsp;

The 7 percent of funds retained by the district are strategically invested to support school projects, ongoing maintenance, and other capital outlay needs within USD 475.It is important to emphasize that none of the IGSA funds come from local tax dollars. The CVB said that they are designed to provide strategic economic assistance to public, private entities, and not-for profit groups that are developing new, or enhancing existing tourism attractions, in the state that will create economic impact through job creation, capital investment, revenue, and increased visitation. 

They are looking for projects that will bring new visitors to Kansas. All projects should have an accountable tie to the tourism industry.&nbsp;
