Marjorie Grace Palmer, age 81, passed away Monday, May 25, 2020 at the Leonardville Nursing Home.

She was born on December 25, 1938 in Mattoon, Illinois, the daughter of Ward Wilson and Helen May (Shriver) Seaman.

Marjorie was an office manager for Mutual of Omaha for 42 years.  She was a member of the Valley Park United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and then the Sedalia Community Church.  She enjoyed bowling in the Golden Oldies Bowling League and the fellowship of the Senior Citizens lunches every Wednesday in Riley. She always enjoyed singing and was an active participant in the sing-a-long group at Leonardville Nursing Home for many years.  She loved her job as Grandma for her three grandchildren who she taught to bowl, sew, and cook.

She is survived by a daughter, Dawn Messerla and husband David of Manhattan; two brothers, David Seaman of Gravois Mills, Missouri and Dennis Seaman of O’Fallon, Missouri; three grandchildren, Matthew Messerla and wife Jara of Ottawa, Aaron Messerla of Chicago, Illinois and Katie Messerla of Manhattan and one great-grandson, Mason Lucas Messerla of Ottawa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Seaman.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. June 6, 2020 at the Sedalia Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. June 5, 2020 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for the Sedalia Community Church.  Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Yong Hui Martin, age 70, died on Wednesday May 27, 2020 at her residence in Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born in Seoul, South Korea on August 15, 1949 the daughter of Hyun-Chil Kim and Bong Lae Kang. Yong was a loving homemaker for her family.

Yong was united in marriage on August 29, 1977 to Ernie Martin in Seoul, South Korea. This union was blessed with 3 sons: Matt, John and Daniel.

She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, watching the Korean Channel &amp; keeping everyone well fed. Above all, she loved being with her family, especially spoiling the grandchildren.

Yong was preceded in death by her parents; a sister: Kyung-Hee Kim and a brother: Joon-Soo Kim.

Survivors include her husband: Ernie of the home; sons: Matt Martin and his wife Heather of Manhattan, John Martin and his wife Megan of Manhattan and Daniel Martin and Erin Crofford of Thompson, Manitoba, Canada. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Adrian Martin, Kierra Martin, Skyler Martin, Ellis Martin, Hazel (Crofford) Martin and Owen Crofford; 2 brothers: Cheol-Soo Kim and Moon-Soo Kim and her beloved dog: Max.

Frances was born July 29, 1928, Bonner Springs, KS to Ray and Lorean (Moore) Willis. Frances received her Bachelor's in Bible Study at Manhattan Bible College and her Masters and Ph.D in Education from Kansas State University. She taught elementary school in Belleville, KS and Junction City, KS.

She married Maurice David Graham August 20, 1949, Bonner Springs, KS he preceded her in death February 29, 2000.

Frances is survived by her four children, Ruth E. Graham, Topeka, KS, Mark (Vallery) Graham, Lloyd (Barb) Graham, Lois Graham all of Junction City, KS; five grandchildren, Brett, Heath, Justin, Austin and Caitlin; seven great-grandchildren, Grayson, Remington, Carter, Miles, Vivian, Brynn and Cameron.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Marion Willis.

Patricia (Pat) M. Wild, 93, Junction City died Sunday, May 24, 2020 at Via Christi Village, Manhattan.

Pat was born August 31, 1926 in Wandsworth England to Henry and Bessie Connor. She loved to tell stories of swimming in the Thames and playing tennis at Hampton Court while growing up.

She met her husband John during World War II while he served with the United States Army Air Forces. Pat and John were united in marriage on May 5, 1945 in East Moseley, England.

Pat arrived in Kansas in early 1946 to join John on their farm in Lincoln County, becoming one of the first war brides in Kansas. The community excitedly held a reception to welcome “Johnny’s” new bride and hear her British accent. The couple later relocated to Junction City.

While raising seven children, Pat spent time outside the home working as a Physical Education assistant at Junction City Junior High school, Administrator for Evans Railcar, Daily Union newspaper and KJCK radio. She also worked with the Junction City Mental Health Association as well as Meals on Wheels. At one time she was the oldest volunteer lifeguard in Kansas.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John of 60 years, son Jeffrey, brother Peter Connor and sister Theresa Rogers.

Survivors include children Michael Wild, La Jolla, California, Patricia (Tony) Henningsen, Oberlin, Kansas, Mary (Mike) Pine, Mulvane, Kansas, David (Caroline) Wild, Milford, Kansas, Elizabeth Mathews, Uganda, Africa, and Dorothy (David) Bleakley, Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

She is also survived by grandchildren Kyleb Wild, Keejun Wild, Justin (Kendra) Brown, Theresa (Kevin) Burr, Anastasia (Scott) Hammers, John (Brooke) Pine, John Wild, Leigh (Geoff) Polacek, Eric (Kimberly) Mathews, Elise Mathews, Mathew Bleakley, Connor Bleakley, Nathan Bleakley as well as eight, soon to be nine, great grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at St. Xavier Church in Junction City. Johnson Funeral home is handling arrangements. Inurnment will occur at Union Valley Cemetery, Barnard, Kansas on July 3, 2020 in memory of her flying of the British Union Jack on that day to humorously commemorate the last day the crown held rule over the colonies (United States). To honor her request, a small vial of ashes will also be spread at sea in Worthing England where, as a girl, her family spent the summers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Geary County Community Healthcare Foundation.

Mary graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1947. On December 22, 1947, she married Clyde William Oesterhaus in Junction City. Clyde and Mary farmed near Dwight until 2004. Mary moved to Topeka in 2005. Mary was a life-long member of the Dwight United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church Women where she held many leadership positions. Mary loved reading, utilizing the mail-a book services at the farm and later the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Red Carpet Services while living in Topeka. She also enjoyed gardening and canning.

Survivors include her four children, Clyde Oesterhaus, Jr. (Laura) of Dwight, KS, Connie Oesterhaus and Pamela Oesterhaus both of Topeka, KS and Reginald Oesterhaus (Sheli) of Clay Center, KS; two grandchildren and three-great grandchildren.

Frankie Eugene Gray 80, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020 at home in Abilene surrounded by family.

 He was born January 7, 1940 near Miltonvale, the son of George W. and Georgia A. (Catlin) Gray. Growing up, Frankie attended local schools and graduated from Miltonvale Rural High School with the class of 1957. July 4, 1957 he married Sherryl Shroyer in Miltonvale. Most of their married life has been spent in Abilene.

 Frankie was employed by NRCS Department of Agriculture. Frankie enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing, traveling and country music. He was a member of the Abilene First United Methodist Church.

 Frankie was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Leland Gray. Frankie is survived by: wife, Sherryl Gray of Abilene; son, Gerald ( Jeanine) Gray of Iola; daughter, Sherri (Jim) Hohensee of Abilene; Four grandchildren, Kelby Garten, Cassie Gragg, Leland Gray, Layton Gray; and five great-grandchildren.

Galen D. Kubin, age 92, of Abilene, passed away Sunday May 24th, 2020 at his farm home north of Abilene. He was born October 11th, 1927 in McPherson, Kansas, the son Wilbur F. “Bill” and Anna C. (Gustafson) Kubin. He grew up on the family farm, and graduated from McPherson High School.

Galen served with the Army Corps of engineers for two years.

On January 20th of 1952 he married Doris A. Ledy. Most of their lives were spent north of Abilene on their dairy farm. He was an “independent, stubborn, bull-headed farmer” at heart, and he was proud of it. Despite being retired, he maintained an avid interest and “opinion” on the operation of his farm.

He was passionate about his Christian faith, and served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, song leader, and board member for the Abilene Wesleyan Church. He also worked in the Kansas district leadership for the Wesleyan Men. He took a special interest in foreign missions, and organized trips and led teams of builders to the Wesleyan medical compounds in Haiti. This inspired his daughter, Susan, who has been serving since 2011 in medical ministry to a remote mountain area with EMEVI – Evangelical Living Water Ministry of Haiti. In recent years, Galen found spiritual fellowship at the Community Bible Church in Abilene. In retirement, he continued to mentor, and be an inspiration to those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris, in 2015; his parents; and his sister, Billie Ann Morse. He is survived by daughters; Gayle Ann (Mike) Simpson of Topeka, Kansas; and Dr. Susan D. (David) Thompson of Abilene; 2 grandsons, Christopher (Lulu) Thompson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Jonathan Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa; 3 great-grandchildren, Rowen, Gillian, and Oliver, of Oklahoma City.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family will have a private funeral with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. A recording of the service will be available within a few days, at the church Facebook site.

Elder (Miller).&nbsp; She grew up in Havensville, Kansas and graduated from Havensville High School in 1955.&nbsp; After graduation she moved to Topeka, Kansas and worked for the State and that is where she met the love of her life, George Lee Bettencourt who was from Oakland, CA and was stationed at Forbes Airforce Base.&nbsp; On December 21, 1958 they married and were blessed with 62 years.

She and Lee lived a short time in San Lorenzo, CA where their three oldest children were born, but in 1966 moved back to Havensville where they lived for 40 years.&nbsp; During this time Martha worked as a Nurses Aid and Emergency Medical Technician for the Onaga Community Hospital, Onaga, Kansas.&nbsp; After raising her 5 children she went to Kaw Valley Technical School and earned her Licensed Practical Nursing degree in 1993 and practiced in Onaga for the next fifteen years.&nbsp;

She was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Onaga, KS and after retiring and moving to Wamego in 2006 she was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

Martha loved the Lord and demonstrated it with her servants’ heart. She was always ready to lend a hand or just come to your home if you needed someone to talk to.&nbsp; She served the community in various ways over the years:&nbsp; USD #322 School board member, Marriage Encounter instructor, 4-H leader, Softball coach, St. Vincent De Paul lay minister and catechism teacher and St. Bernard’s Women’s Guild.

Her other loves included baking, gardening, bowling, dancing with her husband, and most of all, being a wife/mother/grandmother. She had a way of making each of her grandchildren feel like they were the most special and most loved. Her love of sports was unmatched and magnified for any activity her children and grandchildren participated in.&nbsp; During March Madness you could always count on her being front and center of a TV.&nbsp; She had a sharp wit and great sense of humor and always made those around her feel special.&nbsp; She was one of a kind.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband Lee, children: John (Kathy) Bettencourt, Wamego, KS, Laura (Rusty) Chrest, Silt, CO, Sandra (Tyler) Roberts, Frisco, TX and Linda (Cole) McDiffett, Wamego, KS. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren:&nbsp; Derek (Janie) Berry, Shawna (Steven) Rohr, Blaine (Kendra) Bettencourt, Bailey (Jared) Edling, Kendall, Brynne &amp; Emerson Hammes; Reece, Gabriel, Grant &amp; Tate Warren; Morgan, Layton, Hadley &amp; Grace Bettencourt and five great-grandchildren:&nbsp; Owen, Katelyn, Paige, Adalynn &amp; Jaxston.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death were her parents; sister Carol Bahret; son, Dr. Mark Bettencourt and great-granddaughter Cadence Rohr.&nbsp;

Regina “Martha” Bettencourt (Elder) 82, of Wamego, Kansas passed away Monday, May 25th at home peacefully surrounded by her husband, Lee, and children John, Laura, Sandra and Linda.&nbsp;She was born on September 4, 1937 in Wheaton, Kansas to Damien L. and Corinne L. Shirley’s life began on June 26, 1941, the daughter of Roy and Letha (Helms) Doyle in Lamar, Missouri. She married Victor LeRoy Dies and Royce “Marty” Mobley. They both preceded her in death. Shirley attended Friendship Baptist Church, was a homemaker and an Elvis fan.

Her loving family includes her Son, Victor Dies (Donna) of Elizabeth, North Carolina; Daughters, Debra Westerberg (Larry) of Haysville, Kansas, Marla Dexter (Kevin) of Salina, Kansas; four Grandchildren, Emmanuel Dies, Holly Gad, Chris Westerberg and Megan Dies; six Great-Grandchildren, Mariah, Elijah, Nayib and Amenah Gad, Aiden and Abbey Westerberg.

God called Leo Edward Hultgren to his heavenly home on May 23, 2020 at the age of 87 years old. Leo was born to George and Lillian (Pearson) Hultgren on January 8th 1933. He spent all but 7 years of his life in rural White City. Leo attended one room schools at Kitchen and Highland prior to graduating from White City High School in 1951. He enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and served on the USS Bryce Canyon destroyer tender until his discharge in 1956. He enjoyed his time in the Navy and developed lifelong friendships.

After returning from the Navy Leo attended college at K-State and found college wasn't for him.&nbsp; He went to work at Boeing in Wichita and worked there until 1959. During his time in Wichita he met the love of his life, Nellie Ball, on a blind date. He and Nellie married in Wichita on February 21, 1959.&nbsp; Leo brought his bride back to the farm life and they made their first home 3 ½ miles south of White City. Leo joined his father farming and milking on the Grade A dairy until 1966 when his parents retired, built a home in town and moved to White City. Leo and Nellie moved the family to the home place and took over the farming and the dairy operation.&nbsp;

Leo belonged to the Teddy L Wilde #299 American Legion Post and the White City United Methodist Church. He coached baseball and helped organize the baseball association. Many patrons enjoyed breakfast cooked by Leo at the American Legion which he did for over 15 years.&nbsp; He continued this activity until he began experiencing issues with his health. Leo served on the administrative council at the church and was in charge of the men's annual breakfast for 20 years. He also served various terms on the Morris County FSA Board.

Leo was incredibly proud of every member of his family and nothing gave him more joy than having them home. Meals always began with the entire family gathered, hand in hand, while he gave thanks for all blessings.

As a lifetime farmer Leo continued to do what he loved all his life. He enjoyed sharing produce from the garden and he loved mowing. One of the most recent accomplishments was the creation of Lucky 7 Park. A small clearing in the timber where family members worked to remove trees and brush. Grass was planted and small walnut trees were nurtured. The family agreed the park would be called Lucky 7 after the 7 children. Leo was so very proud of the Lucky 7 Park and invited all to enjoy it. The annual community hog roast held at the park to bring the local and surrounding communities together for fellowship was already being planned and Leo recently set the date for 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillian Hultgren, one brother Eugene and 2 sisters Edna Mae Joy and Doris Roberts. Anthony Maiorana, age 62 of Manhattan, passed away Monday, May 25, 2020 at his residence.

He was born on May 8, 1958 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the son of Sam Anthony and Yoshie C. (Tomihara) Maiorana.

Anthony grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Business Administration.  He worked several jobs and most recently for Five Star Vending.  He enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing pool, competing in different leagues.

He is survived by his partner, Jennifer Maiorana of Manhattan; two sons, Jordan Maiorana of Leonardville and Samuel Maiorana of Manhattan; one step son, Ethan Johnson of Manhattan; two step daughters, Sheridan Johnson of Manhattan and Samantha Senff of Leonardville; one brother, Sam A. Maiorana of Ogden and one sister, Rita A. Powers of Ogden.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2020 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.  Anthony’s service will be recorded and a link will be added to this page shortly after the service concludes for anyone that is unable to attend.

Dorothy Pauline Beswick, age 98 of Clay Center, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020 at her residence.

She was born on October 31, 1921 in Green, the daughter of Ralph and Elsie (Riek) Wiegers.

On December 12, 1944, she was married to Arnold Beswick.  He preceded her in death. 

Dorothy was a one room school teacher at the Wood School for five years before her marriage. She was a prior member of the Parallel Presbyterian Church and the Fact United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School.  When the Fact United Methodist Church closed, she became a member of the Clay Center United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed cooking, quilting, gardening, and sewing, making most of her children’s clothes while they were young.

She is survived by a daughter, Diane Pfeifley and husband Phil of Riley; six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her twin sons, Ed and Arn Beswick; her daughter, Karen Beswick; her sister, Gladys Osthoff and a great grandson.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at the Parallel Cemetery with Herb Mugler officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Mary Beth Hauer, age 87, of Manhattan, died May 22, 2020, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born August 16, 1932, in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of Wayne Delbert and Venla (Sondergard) Sieh. She moved to Manhattan and attended local schools and graduated from Manhattan High School. She then attended and later graduated from Kansas State University with her Bachelors in Music Education on the piano.

On January 28, 1953, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan, she was married to Edward William Hauer.

The family moved with Ed’s military service obligations for several years and then settled in Evergreen, Colorado, in 1962. They returned to Manhattan in 1993.

For many years Mary Beth gave private piano lessons in their home.

Mary Beth was an active member of the Evergreen Lutheran Church in Evergreen and then First Lutheran Church in Manhattan. She was the church organist in Evergreen and then the substitute organist at First Lutheran and also played for the church services at local nursing homes.

While in Evergreen she helped start the Evergreen Players in a local theater. While in Manhattan she was active in Pilot Club and Domestic Science. Mary Beth had a love and passion for music her entire life.

Survivors include her husband Ed of Manhattan; five children: Bill Hauer and his wife Anne of Fairbanks, Alaska, Greg Hauer of Cascade Locks, Oregon, Peter Hauer of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Becky Trenary and her husband Gary of Morrison, Colorado, and Jane Holba and her husband Bob of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Cremation is planned with private family graveside services at Carnahan Creek Cemetery north of Manhattan, with the Reverend Elizabeth Kocher officiating.

She then attended and later graduated from Kansas State University with her Bachelors in Music Education on the piano.On January 28, 1953, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan, she was married to Edward William Hauer.The family moved with Ed’s military service obligations for several years and then settled in Evergreen, Colorado, in 1962. They returned to Manhattan in 1993.For many years Mary Beth gave private piano lessons in their home.Mary Beth was an active member of the Evergreen Lutheran Church in Evergreen and then First Lutheran Church in Manhattan. She was the church organist in Evergreen and then the substitute organist at First Lutheran and also played for the church services at local nursing homes.While in Evergreen she helped start the Evergreen Players in a local theater. While in Manhattan she was active in Pilot Club and Domestic Science. Mary Beth had a love and passion for music her entire life.Survivors include her husband Ed of Manhattan; five children: Bill Hauer and his wife Anne of Fairbanks, Alaska, Greg Hauer of Cascade Locks, Oregon, Peter Hauer of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Becky Trenary and her husband Gary of Morrison, Colorado, and Jane Holba and her husband Bob of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.Cremation is planned with private family graveside services at Carnahan Creek Cemetery north of Manhattan, with the Reverend Elizabeth Kocher officiating.Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church to establish an endowment for Youth Music Education. Phyllis Nadine Shanline, age 91, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2020 at Sunrise of Lenexa in Lenexa, Kansas, and a little bit of sunshine left this world with her. Phyllis was born October 16, 1928 in Augusta, Kansas, the eldest child of Victor and Lena Semisch.

Her parents loved music, and as a child she learned to harmonize with her father. People in her hometown would come to know her for her beautiful voice, and she even sang on her own radio show. Her impressive musical talent earned her a scholarship to Colorado Women’s College, where she studied voice after she graduated from Augusta High School. She would return to Kansas, however, and meet Rix Shanline while they were both students at Southwestern College and later at the University of Kansas, where they fell in love and were married June 5, 1949 in Augusta, Kansas.

They began a family right away and moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1956 where they eventually celebrated 67 years of marriage before Rix’s passing in 2016.

Her creativity, kindness and the pure joy she took in the beauty around her drew people to her, and music was always an important part of who she was. She sang with delight, and was an artist, a poet, an actress, an enthusiastic hugger, a loving supportive wife and a truly nurturing mom. She was kind and left a loving legacy of gentleness and humor for her family. With all her talent, she once wrote that she considered her five daughters and their families her most important creations. She loved her family deeply and was deeply loved in return.

She used to sing lullabies to her daughters, and one of her favorites was the song that Wendy sang to the lost boys in the Disney version of Peter Pan called “Your Mother and Mine”. The last words of the song suit her well: “If you ask your heart what she’s worth, your heart must say ‘Heaven on Earth’. Another word for divine: your mother and mine.”

Phyllis is survived by her daughters Teresa, Ellen, Susan (Kaycie, Lynne and Amy, their spouses, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, her sister Jody and family.

Internment will be in the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Riley with the love of her life, her husband Rix. A Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Robert James Paul was born on July 19, 1931 to Archibald Joseph and Anna (Weber) Paul. He was one of ten children and is survived by one sister and three brothers. Bob was a scholarly man and spent his career educating other scholars. In 1955, Bob married Phyllis Jean Rolke, and they had four children: Steve of Wamego, KS, Sue (Mike) Dickerson of Mississippi, Nancy of Texas, and Mike (Lan Le) of Virginia. Phyllis preceded Bob in death in 1987. He later met and married Vina Disberger in 1992. Vina was also a widow with nine children and many grandchildren, most of whom do not remember a time when Bob was not a loving and devoted member of their family. Vina preceded Bob in death in June 2018.

Bob leaves behind his children and three grandsons, Dave, Ross, and Adam, as well as his nine step-children, Colleen (Mark) Johnson, Dennis (Martha) Disberger, Mike (Kim) Disberger, Patrick Disberger, Connie (Nick) Hart, Carol (Dennis) Wright, Russell (Mary) Disberger, David (Kim) Disberger, and Robert (Tonya) Disberger as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including his caregivers, Jeff and Kristen Wright and their family.

Bob will be greatly missed and will always be remembered for his love of family, camping, travel, poetry, church, and his wonderful sense of humor. Due to the current covid-19 situation, his services will be private.

John Clayton White, Jr., 91, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020. John was born on April 2, 1929 in Frederick Maryland to Ardella (Williams) and John White. He was raised by his grandmother on a dairy farm in York, PA, and attributed his success to the life lessons he learned from her.

John served 26, years in the United States Army retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. During his military career he served numerous assignments in the United States as well as overseas including Germany, Vietnam, and Korea. John was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal 3rd (OLC, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. His final assignment was as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Supply and Transportation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division of Fort Riley, KS.

During his tour in Germany, John met his "Schatz" Luise. John and Luise were united in marriage on July 23, 1950 in Kitzingen, Germany this union was blessed with one son, John C White III. Luise preceded John in death on August 30, 2012. John visited her at the cemetery every day eventually relying on his dear friends Angie, Tracy, Walter, and Hildegard once he was no longer able to drive himself.

John received his Kansas Real Estate license in 1978 and sold properties throughout the state. He was an active member of the Flint Hills Association of Realtors maintaining a current license up to the final day of his life.

John, alongside Pete Zanella, started White-Zanella Liquor Store, which in 2001 became The Fridge Wholesale Liquor after partnering with Conrad Franz, and Kevin Neitzel. John was proud to help Kevin grow The Fridge into a top store in the state and loved visiting and joking with customers during his time at the store prior to retiring in 2006.

John and Luise joined the First United Methodist Church in 1967. He served on numerous church committees from local to state levels and formed the Morning Glory Choir for the non-traditional service. John was a huge supporter of both youth and families, not only in the church but also in the community.

John was a philanthropist. He and Luise were major contributors to the construction of the Good Shepard Hospice house. John served in many local organizations including Youthville, and the Riley County Historical Society as Director, Membership Secretary, Vice President and President. He retired from the Riley County Historical Museum Board in 2019.

John was a member of the Manhattan Breakfast Optimist Club from 1979 until his death, representing the Optimist Club in an annual golf tournament that supported Childhood Cancer Camps. He was an Emeritus Trustee of the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation from 2003-2017.

John was an avid bowler and traveled great distances for tournaments. His other hobbies included fishing, golfing, hunting, all sports, tending his rose bushes, and spending time friends.

John is survived by his son John C White III of San Francisco, CA, his dear friends and loving caregivers Walter and Hildegard Bembry, and Tracy and Angie Dowling-Burnett.

Memorials in his name can be made to the First United Methodist Church and the Good Shepherd Hospice House.

  He had lived in Wellington prior to moving to Herington in 1980.  He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington.  He was an avid flower gardener and “precise” lawn mower.  He also indulged in Hersey miniature chocolates and enjoyed going to the casino and scratch off lotto tickets.

  His loving family includes his wife of 66 years Shirley Klein of Herington; children Joreen (Graham) Jones of Aurora, CO, Sandra (Mark) Sutton of Abilene and Diana Klein of Wellington; grandchildren Jennifer (Levi) Feeney, Susan (Paul) Turle, Sally Jones, Sonya Sutton, Shad Sutton, and Leslie (Christopher) Seematter; great grandchildren Landon, Campbell, Matthew, Kyle, Raven, Ryder, Karter, Kyla and Everette.  Howard passed away on May 23, 2020 at Salina Regional Hospital.  He is preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Sherry and brother Donald Klein.

Howard Leslie Klein - October 14, 1926-May 23, 2020 (age 93)

Dean’s life began on February 22, 1935 in Jefferson, Ohio.  He was the son of Stephen K. and Viola L. (Engel) Armstrong.  He was a 1953 graduate of Blume High School in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Dean also served his country in the United States Army. Dean earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Purdue University and a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard University School of Business.

  Dean had been employed by General Motors in Anderson, IN as the plant manager before moving to El Dorado with his wife Marilyn and his family in 1978.  Dean joined his second Cousin Richard Teichgraber as owner of International Petroleum Services.  After selling his share of International Petroleum Services, Dean purchased the Florence State Bank where he served as President and Owner.&nbsp; Dean owned several Florence businesses including Inlow Foam, Marion Insurance Company, Florence Funeral Home and a restaurant.   He married a second time to Kathryn Park in September of 1988 in Sierra Vista, AZ.

   Dean moved to Marion in 2003 and was an avid golfer at Marion Country Club, he was very involved in the Florence Chamber of Commerce and was a Phi Delta Theta brother at Purdue University.  Dean was especially instrumental in helping to encourage and develop business in Marion County.  He was a trusted advisor and friend to many in the region and around the world.

  Dean’s greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Kate of Marion; children Ann (Tim) Heide of Austin, TX and Ellen (Mike) Egan of El Dorado; stepchildren Rhonda (Eldon) Hett of Marion, Bret (Randi) O’Dell of Peabody and Brenda (William) Clouse of Smithville, MO; grandchildren John Egan, Jaymie (Jesse) Adams, Ashton Heide and Olivia Heide; step-grandchildren Jerod (Natalie) and Justin (Brea) Hett, and Shawna (Albert) Johnson, step grandchildren Megan (Joel) Thomas, Alysha (Alex) Haines, Kellan and Keaton Clouse.; great grandchildren Easton, Nina and Ian Hett, Lilly, Otis and Guss Hett, Caileigh and Carlynn Johnson, Rylee and Clayton Thomas, and Tessa and Rhett Haines; his sister June (Dr. Jack Hoffman, M.D.) Hoffman of Phoenix, AZ and Wapakoneta, OH and nieces and nephews Jayne Hoffman, Jeffrey Hoffman, John Hoffman, Jacalyn Hoffman, Jodi Hoffman, Jenifer Hoffman, Jason Hoffman, Eric Armstrong and Mark Armstrong. Dean Alan Armstrong - February 22, 1935-May 23, 2020 (age 85)

Iris’s life began on October 1, 1938 in Burwell, Nebraska.  She was the daughter of Willis and Doris (Umstead) Scofield.  Iris was a homemaker and a mother, who enjoyed raising her daughters.  She loved her cat and lived her life simply to the best of her ability.

Iris passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020 at St. Luke’s Living Center in Marion.  She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Barbara Carpenter.

  A private family memorial service will be held at Marion Cemetery.  Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion is serving her family.  Memorial contributions in Iris’s name may be directed to the St. Luke’s Foundation.

Iris’s life began on October 1, 1938 in Burwell, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Willis and Doris (Umstead) Scofield. Iris was a homemaker and a mother, who enjoyed raising her daughters. She loved her cat and lived her life simply to the best of her ability. Her loving family includes her daughters Terri (Marty) Frederickson and Tamara Blome, all of Marion; grandchildren Brett and Brody Blome and her brother Irvan (Carolyn) Scofield of Broken Bow, Nebraska. Jennie Lee Harold, 80, of Junction City, KS, passed May 16, 2020.

A graveside memorial service at Highland Cemetery will be Wednesday May 27, 2020 at 10am.

Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 South Eisenhower Dr. Junction City, KS 66441.

Jennie was born on December 20, 1939, in Dresden, Kansas to Jess and Lucille (Demmer) Harold. She lived in western Kansas until her father moved the family to the Manhattan/Junction City area around 1944 where he found work at Fort Riley, Kansas due to World War 2. Jennie attended school at Pleasant View in Geary County and afterwards attended Junction City schools. From the late 1950's to about 1982, she worked as a clerk for Park Laundry Service. In the early 1980's, she then went to work as an order filler at F.W. Woolworth. Jennie's last employment was in the early 1990's until her retirement at Russell Stover's.

Jennie was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Junction City.

She is survived by her loving family: her sister, Mary A. Clark of Junction City, KS; brother, Ron (Jan) Harold of Manhattan, KS; brother-in-law, William "Pat" Burns of Westmoreland, KS; four nieces, Lucy (John) Sterling of Milford, KS, Patty (Tim) Davis of Panama City Beach, FL, Rhonda (Bryan) Taylor of Albuquerque, NM, and Rene Van Camp of Missoula, MT; nephew, Jason (Lori) Harold of Orting, WA; and a host of loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her niece, Robin Rowe, her brothers John Raymond and Roger "Butch.

Pascuala H. Laster, 65, of Junction City, died May 16, 2020 at her home. Pascuala was born in New York City, New York, the daughter of Pascual and America (Rivera) Martinez.

Her family moved to Puerto Rico when Pascuala was a young girl and that is where she attended school and graduated from high school.

Pascuala moved to Junction City with her husband, who was serving in the U.S. Army. They were later divorced.

Pascuala worked at Smithfield Foods as a meat packager.

She is survived by 2 sons, Martin Laster, Jr. and his wife Monique, Thornton, Colorado, and Anthony Laster and his wife Kelsey, Dixon, Missouri; and 2 grandsons, Diego and Mateo Laster. Pascuala was preceded in death by her parents, and 3 sisters.

She was greatly loved for her kind heart and indomitable spirit and will be missed.

Cremation is planned, per her wishes, and there will be no local services.

The family plans to spread the ashes in Colorado and Missouri.
