Ann Appleton, 86 died December 5, 2023, in Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;She was born on April 2, 1937, in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Oliver and Alice (Hanson) Munson. &nbsp;

Ann was a graduate of the Class of 1955 from Clay Center High School. 

She married Gary Appleton on July 29, 1955. &nbsp;They made their home in Missouri and Kansas as Gary served in the US Air Force and later as a United Methodist minister. &nbsp;They returned to Clay Center when Gary retired. &nbsp;

Ann worked for KCLY radio station for several years. &nbsp;Gary preceded her in death on April 11, 2009. &nbsp;

Ann was a member of the United Methodist Church where she played bells and the piano, active in the United Methodist Women’s organization and a member of the Pilot Club. &nbsp;

She was also preceded in death by her parents, son, Mark Appleton, brother, Gary Munson, sister, Verena Jackson, and a grandson.

Thomas E. Tyree, 79 of Leonardville, Kansas died on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at the Clay County Medical Center in Clay Center, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on August 31, 1944 in St. Albans, West Virginia, the son of Henry and Clara (Deweise) Tyree.

Tom grew up and attended schools in West Virginia. &nbsp;He served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1969, doing one tour in Vietnam. &nbsp;He married Helen Worthington on March 6, 1970 and she preceded him in death on July 4, 2023. &nbsp;The couple moved to Clay center in 1970. &nbsp;Tom worked for the Civil Service at Fort Riley for a short time in the early 1970s, Hutinson/Mayrath and drove a concrete truck for many years in Junction City, Florida and Clay Center. &nbsp;He and Helen also owned and operated the Silver Dollar Bar and operated the Rex Theater in Clay Center. &nbsp;He is also preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Donald and Cecil Tyree.

He is survived by his son, James and wife, Tamara Ferguson of Trenton, GA; daughters, Debra and husband, Dean Dunn of Clay Center, KS, Michelle Stephan of St. Lous, MO, and Pamela and husband, Steven Lilley of Clay Center, KS; 13 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; brother, Doug Tyree of Hurricane, WV and sister, Joyce Burford of Charleston, WV.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 10:30AM at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center, Kansas.&nbsp;

Richard (Dick) Nelson Elkins, 89, passed away at home in Manhattan, Kansas on Sunday, December 10,2023 following a two-year battle with cancer.

Dick was born on February 10, 1934, in Clay Center, Kansas to Howard (Bud) and Mary Josephine (Jo) Elkins (nee Stephenson). Dick grew up on a farm south of Wakefield, Kansas.

Dick graduated from Wakefield High School and Kansas State University with a BS in Agricultural Education and a MS in Guidance Counseling. Dick married Arlene Fehlman on July 28, 1956, in Wakefield, Kansas. Dick served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 and the Army Reserve until 1962. Son, Marc was born in 1957 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Dick taught at Mankato High School, Mankato, Kansas where daughter, Marcia was born in 1959. He went on to work as a Guidance Counselor at Beloit High School, Beloit, Kansas where daughter, Michelle was born in 1964.

Dick returned to Kansas State University in 1966 where he was hired as the Assistant Director of Admissions and subsequently promoted to Associate Director and then Director of Admissions serving the University for 32 years. Dick traveled to every part of the State to talk to high school students and parent about attending KSU. He loved working with students to help them find the right place for them to continue their education. Dick made lifelong friends across the state with High School teachers, Guidance Counselors and other College and University Admissions personnel.

Dick shared his love of travel, history, boating, camping, snow skiing and the outdoors with his children. Dick was proud of his children and grandchildren and the lives they have made, and he delighted in the four great-grandchildren. Dick and Arlene traveled extensively enjoying trips across the U.S. and to six continents. 

Upon retirement, Dick and Arlene started an antique business meeting people and making antique friends across country. Dick was a true Kansas farm boy who could fix anything and spent hours tinkering in the garage. Throughout retirement, Dick enjoyed meeting his morning coffee crew.

Dick is greatly missed by his wife, Arlene; his son Marc (Jana) Elkins of Leawood, Kansas, daughter Marcia Elkins, Rapid City, South Dakota, and daughter Michelle Elkins, Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren, Jeff (Sara) Elkins, and Jeni (Coby) Houser, and four great-grandchildren; along with brothers, Bud Elkins, and Bob (Donetta) Elkins.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Jo Elkins, sister-in-law Kay Elkins and son-in-law Ron Buskerud.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday January 6, 2024 at 10:30a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 801 Leavenworth in Manhattan. Private inurnment will be held at a later date at the Highland Cemetery in Wakefield, Kansas.

Richard Elkins

Heather Jager, age 52, passed away on December 12, 2023, after fighting a battle with Alzheimer’s.&nbsp; Her final moments were spent peacefully at home in Wamego, surrounded by her husband, children, and family. 

Known for always wanting to help people, her contagious smile and extraordinary laugh will be dearly missed by all that knew her.

She was born February 17, 1971, in San Bernardino, California, the daughter of Yvonne (Pippy) Engstrom.&nbsp; She moved back to Junction City, Kansas, where she spent time living with her mother and grandparents.&nbsp; 

She and her mother moved to Manhattan, where she attended Seven Dolors Catholic School.&nbsp; She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1989, and later from Kansas State University with a Bachelors in Social Work.

On April 23, 1993, Heather married her high school sweetheart, Shane Jager, in Manhattan. Later that year, Heather and Shane moved to Wamego, where they raised their three beautiful children Taylor, Madison, and Jace.

She could often be found at her children’s sporting events or dance recitals.&nbsp; She had a passion for the outdoors, where she loved to garden, take walks, water ski, or photograph a beautiful Kansas sunset. She had a sense of adventure and loved to plan family vacations. Her true love was spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Shane, of the home; her children; Taylor Ryan (Travis), Madison Jager (Cooper Foltz), and Jace Jager; three grandchildren Kasyn Ebert, Hunter Ryan, and Layne Ryan; step-father Tim Stepan; her sisters Courtney and Katie Stepan; her mother and father-in-law, Rodney and Janice Jager; her aunts and uncles; her cousins; her brother and sister in laws; her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Pippy.

A rosary prayer service will be held on Saturday, December 16th at 10:30 AM at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Wamego. Mass of Christian Burial will take place after at 11:00 AM. 

The family will greet friends following the Mass at the luncheon in the Parish Hall. 

A private family inurnment will be held at the Wabaunsee Cemetery.

Cenith Delane Cowing, 88, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023, at her family home in Clay Center, KS after a long battle with Parkinson’s dementia. 

Cenith was born on February 27, 1935, on the family farm near Lucas, KS, the last child of 10 children born to Everett and Myra Wood. She attended Downs High School. She met and married John Leonard (Bunky) Cowing. They made their home together in Clay Center for 71 years.

Cenith was a seamstress and homemaker while raising her family, later working at Presbyterian Manor as a cook before joining her husband and son in running Cowing’s Antiques in downtown Clay Center for many, many years. Cenith was also very involved in her church and women’s groups, teaching Sunday School and VBS for decades at Clay Center Christian Church.

Cenith was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved babysitting and doing things with her “grands”: Kathy’s Jeremy and Carrie, Robin’s Sarah and Jonathan, and Gina’s Nathan, Gabrielle and Micah. Her “greats” were also a tremendous joy and delight for her when they came along: Jeremy and Karla’s Emilee and Aiden, Carrie’s Gavin and Jt, Nathan and Nicole’s Emmett and Conrad. Nothing seemed to please her more than a baby to hold or a little one to entertain, even in her final months.&nbsp;

Throughout her life Cenith also especially enjoyed homemaking, sewing, reading, daily crosswords, Sunday drives, card parties, vacationing with family, making every holiday special, family reunions, anything to do with angels (especially guardian angel pictures with children), teaching children about Jesus, and any and every opportunity to spend time with family and friends.&nbsp;

Cenith was preceded in death by her parents, her son Sam, her half-siblings Pat, Mike, Evelyn and Pauline, brothers Doyle, Norris, Olin, Orin, Arven, and a sister, Carol Rogers.

Survivors include her husband John, brothers Loy Wood of KC, MO and Arden Wood of Weymouth, MA, sister Sally Cooper of Osborne, KS, daughters Kathy (Roy) Sweet of Clay Center, Robin Butterworth of Glenpool, OK, and Gina (Don) Burman of Lawrence, KS. She will also be dearly missed by grandchildren Jeremy and Karla Sweet of Clay Center, Carrie Alton of Clay Center, Sarah Butterworth of Glenpool, OK, Jonathan Stidman, Tulsa, OK, Nathan and Nicole Burman, KC, MO, Gabrielle Burman, Dallas, TX and Micah Burman, NYC, NY, her great-grandchildren Emilee, Aiden, Gavin, Jt, Emmett and Conrad, as well as countless other relatives and friends.&nbsp;

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Clay Center Christian Church, 1021 Crawford St. This service will be immediately followed by a short graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center, KS.

Thomas E. Carl Dewey “Bud” Hoffsett, Jr., 96, of Wamego, Kansas, died Monday, December 11, 2023, at Vintage Park Assisted Living. &nbsp;He was a long-time member of the community.

Bud was born February 16, 1927, in Wamego, the son of Carl and Sylvia (Heston) Hoffsett, Sr. &nbsp;He attended Wamego grade school and graduated from Wamego High School in 1945. &nbsp;Immediately after High School, Bud was drafted in the United States Army. &nbsp;He served with President Harry S. Truman’s Honor Guard for two years in Washington, D.C. &nbsp;He then re-enlisted and served as a military policeman in China.

Following his military service, Bud came home to Kansas, he worked in Wamego as a school bus driver. In 1951, he moved to California to seek better employment. He worked as the Warehouse Supervisor for A.M. Lewis, Inc., a wholesale grocery company in Riverside, California. &nbsp;He retired after thirty-three years. &nbsp;Bud then moved to Missouri and eventually returned to Wamego.

Bud loved to do woodworking and was quite an artist. &nbsp;He also loved to draw and paint. &nbsp;Bud had many artistic talents, including knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. &nbsp;He was always busy tinkering with some sort of project.

Bud married Ada Carney on December 19, 1959, in Imperial, California, and together they shared two daughters. She preceded him in death on May 20, 1989. &nbsp;Bud then reconnected with an old High School sweetheart and on June 28, 1990, he married Alice Loretta Yocum. &nbsp;She also preceded him in death on March 18, 2016.

Bud is survived by his daughters, Vicki Todd (Patrick), Scottsdale, Arizona, and Carla Gordon (Curtis), Riverside, California; his four grandchildren, Craig Gordon, Lake Jackson, Texas, Lisa Baker, Phoenix, Arizona, Christi Todd and Jennifer Todd, both of Scottsdale, Arizona; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Carl Dewey "Bud" Hoffsett, Jr.

Lois M. Zubrod, 84, of Milford, Kansas, passed away on December 10, 2023, at Chapman Valley Manor surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on November 24, 1939, to Vernie and Lela Parrott (McClam) in Florence County, South Carolina. 

She graduated Lake City High School in 1958. After graduation, she worked at the South Carolina Health and Environmental Services with both her sisters, Margaret and Hazel. 

While working in the department, she met the love of her life, Leroy Zubrod. They married on May 7, 1960, in Columbia, South Carolina. They enjoyed 56 years together until his passing in 2016.

Being a military spouse, she had the opportunity to travel the country with her husband and children. After leaving New Jersey in 1979, she found work on Fort Riley as a receptionist for the radiology department in the Irwin Army Hospital for many years until her retirement.

Lois had an excellent green thumb, some of her favorite flowers were petunias, begonias, and roses. She always made sure to have her home well grown with live greenery. Besides the floral scents from the garden, her Southern cooking aromas also had a special place in her home. Christmas dinners were always a treat for her large family. They will remember them fondly.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Diana) Zubrod of Arlington, Texas; daughter, Bonnie (Barry) Kluesner of Junction City, Kansas; one sister, Hazel (Ronnie) McCall of Lexington, South Carolina; three grandsons, Daniel Whitebread, Levi Whitebread, and Ryan Zubrod; one granddaughter, Angela Hamilton and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded by her loving husband Leroy; one sister, Margaret; one brother, Jackie and her mother and father.

Lois's family will always remember her as a sweet soft spoken Southern Belle.

Logan Russell "Marty" Martin died Monday, December 4, 2023 at Valley View Senior Life in Junction City, Kansas.

Marty was born in Knott County, Hueysville, Kentucky on August 17, 1948. 

He graduated from Garrett High School in Kentucky. After graduation, he joined the Army. Marty served in Vietnam from June 1, 1969 to June 1, 1970. 

He was the recipient of the army commendation medal for meritorious achievement in the republic of Vietnam from one January 1970 to 30 April 1970. He received the award of the bronze star medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in the republic of Vietnam during the period June 1969 to June 1970. He also received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on August 11, 1969.

Marty was a thirty year civil servant at Fort Riley. He attended Manhattan Area Vocational School where he obtained certification with heating and air conditioning.

Marty married Linda Jo Matthews on September 25, 1971. 

Marty was a kind soul, a devoted husband to Linda, a loyal friend, a loving brother and uncle to his many nieces and nephews, and a fine man. 

He was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan. He was a proud and patriotic soldier.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elva Martin of Floyd County, Kentucky; his beloved wife, Linda Jo Matthews Martin; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Marvin Crum; and his two sisters-in-law, Carol Matthews Schrader and Victoria Matthews.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Kendra Martin; his brother-in-law, Kevin Schrader; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Collette Matthews; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Matthews; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, one of whom is named after him.

A visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday, December 16th at Johnson Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16th following the visitation at the funeral home. Burial will follow the funeral with military honors at Highland Cemetery.

MSG (RET) Cortez McKinnis, Jr., 87, of Junction City, KS was called to his eternal rest on 25 November 2023 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS.

Cortez was born on 1 March 1936 in Gunnison Township, MS to Cortez McKinnis, Sr. and Willie May (Johnson) McKinnis. 

Cortez was a true son of Mississippi, embodying the spirit and resilience of his beloved hometown in every area of his life.

The seeds of his legacy of cooperation, friendship and academic excellence began during his time in high school. Cortez’s thirst for knowledge and passion for self-improvement continued even after he was drafted into the U. S. Army. 

It was during his active service that Cortez laid the foundation for what would become a very distinguished military career. He dedicated his career to his own personal growth and development, while remaining committed to his fellow service members. 

MSG (RET) McKinnis served in several military locations, including two combat tours in Vietnam, during his 20+ years of active service. 

He received many meritorious awards, including two Purple Hearts. He retired from active duty at Fort Riley, KS in 1978. Following his military retirement, Cortez worked as a courier for First National Bank (now Exchange Bank) for more than 40 years.

During his first marriage, he and his wife, Dorothy J. Palmore welcomed four beloved daughters-Angela McKinnis ofVirginia Beach, VA; Carolyn McKinnis of Norfolk, VA; Tanya Hockensmith (Tony) of Gettysburg, PA; and Chandra Ward of Kansas City, KS. 

Cortez always conveyed his deep belief in a life of service to his family, which led his three oldest daughters and a grandson to follow his footsteps into the military.

In 1989, Cortez married Jean (Edwards) Davis at their home church, Second Missionary Baptist Church in Junction City, KS. With their union, Cortez gained his much-loved step-children, David Davis (Raquel) of Chipiona Cadiz, Spain; Dawn Gallon (Eric) of Lakeland, FL; Dr. Crystal Davis of Junction City, KS; Jason Davis of Waco, TX; Pauletta Russell of Atlanta, GA; and Tamiko (Tammi) Coleman-Hall of Colonial Heights, MD (in memorium). 

Cortez and Jean shared 27 years in a committed union until her untimely death in 2017. Cortez was a faithful member of Second Missionary Baptist Church for 45 years where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Laymen committee and Man of The Year (SMBC), Chaplain for the NAACP (JC), Chaplain for the Junction City/Geary Co. Democratic Committee, Lifetime Member of VFW Post #8773, Member of the then KS Black Leadership Council, 32nd Degree Mason, and Member of the Kiwanis Club South of Junction City.

Cortez was preceded in death by his wife Jean (Edwards) Davis-McKinnis; his parents Willie May (Johnson) McKinnis and Cortez McKinnis, Sr. and stepmother Willie McKinnis; his brothers Ben Richardson, W. L. Jones, J.C. McKinnis, Odell McKinnis, Sr., Joe Louis McKinnis, and his sister, Elnora Morilla, and both his maternal/ paternal grandparents.

Left to carry on Cortez’s legacy of faith in God, love of others, compassion, caring and mutual cooperation is his sister, Mattie Hawkins (Freddie) of Cleveland, MS; his beloved children-Angela, Carolyn, Tanya and Chandra; stepchildren- David, Dawn, Crystal, Jason and Pauletta; grandchildren- DeLana, Alania, Angelica, Khiry, Tyler, Courtney, Sierra, Eric II, Joshua, Mileena, David Alessandro, Maria Raquel, Elijah, Victoria, Javon, T.J., Perris, Chyna and Cydney. He is also survived by 10 precious great-grandchildren, with another due early in 2024.

Cortez’s testimony was “Keep God first. Read your bible. Keep putting one foot in front of theother. Remain obedient to God and He will see you through.” His favorite Scripture was Psalm23, and his favorite hymn was Amazing Grace.

MSG (RET) Cortez McKinnis, Jr.

Sonya Kay Murphy, 67, of Manhattan, Kansas died on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.

Sonya was born December 29, 1955, in Manhattan, Kansas.

Sonya graduated from Manhattan High School with the class of 1973. She went to work in 1985 for Parker Hannifin as a purchasing agent in Manhattan, Kansas. She retired in 2022. 

Sonya participated with the Red Hat Society for many years. She was very active in organizing the class reunions for the class of 1973 at Manhattan High School.

She is survived by her husband Daniel E. Huber of Manhattan, Kansas; two sons, Kevin Murphy and his wife Xuanduy and Derek Pfizenmaier and his companion Jacqui Parker all of Manhattan, Kansas; her mother, Anna M. Gates and two grandsons Easton, Caleb and one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her step-father Dell Gates.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will take place December 23, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. at the Sedalia Community Church 6040 N. 52nd Street Manhattan, Kansas. 

Memorial donations are suggested to be given to the organization of the donor's choice.

 </figure>Sonya Kay Murphy, 67, of Manhattan, Kansas died on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.Sonya was born December 29, 1955, in Manhattan, Kansas.Sonya graduated from Manhattan High School with the class of 1973. She went to work in 1985 for Parker Hannifin as a purchasing agent in Manhattan, Kansas. She retired in 2022. Sonya participated with the Red Hat Society for many years. She was very active in organizing the class reunions for the class of 1973 at Manhattan High School.She is survived by her husband Daniel E. Huber of Manhattan, Kansas; two sons, Kevin Murphy and his wife Xuanduy and Derek Pfizenmaier and his companion Jacqui Parker all of Manhattan, Kansas; her mother, Anna M. Gates and two grandsons Easton, Caleb and one on the way.She was preceded in death by her step-father Dell Gates.Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will take place December 23, 2023 from 2-5 p.m. at the Sedalia Community Church 6040 N. 52nd Street Manhattan, Kansas. Memorial donations are suggested to be given to the organization of the donor's choice.

Keith B. Oney, 71, of Alma, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Born July 19, 1952 in New London, Ohio, Keith was the son of Ernest and Verlie (Case) Oney. &nbsp;He married LaNelle Kay Wegner on July 3, 1978 in Las Vegas, Nevada. &nbsp;She survives at the home.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Keith attended New London public schools, graduating in June 1970 and enlisted in the Army to serve his country during the Vietnam war. He completed Airborne Ranger school while in Vietnam and served in the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) unit for the G-75th Rangers. He was stationed at Fort Riley and honorably discharged September 1973. Keith enjoyed all things outdoors and spent time hunting, trapping, racing dirt track cars, and tinkering with several car and truck projects. He was a member of several state and national outdoor organizations, serving as a volunteer of the Kansas Fur Harvesters and Wabaunsee County 4-H.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;Keith was employed for many years as an ASE certified mechanic at several area dealerships and independently owned shops before retiring from the Kansas Turnpike Authority in 2009.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Survivors include his wife, LaNelle; a son, Brian Oney (Stacey) of Trophy Club, TX; a daughter, Kayla Savage (Johnathan) of St. George, KS; six grandchildren, Sophia Oney, Connor Oney, Ainsley Oney, Colin Oney, Cooper Savage and Owen Savage; an Aunt, AnnaLea Clark (Clinton “Tiny”) of Tampa, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Mr. Oney was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Marv Oney Savage; a sister, Tina Inscho; and three brothers, Bill “Buddy” Oney, Don Oney and Roy Oney.

Bobby Gene Pfizenmaier, age 92 of Green, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center.

He was born on September 15, 1931, on a farm outside of Green, the son of Harry Ernest and Wilma Mae (Clark) Pfizenmaier.

He married JoAnne Joyce Appleton on September 12, 1954, in Green.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Bobby was a lifetime farmer and rancher who enjoyed harvesting and raising cattle. He was a member of the Green Christian Church and Elks Lodge.&nbsp; He loved his family and watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in all their activities.&nbsp; He also liked deer and pheasant hunting with his family and the Kansas City Royals.

In addition to his wife, JoAnne Pfizenmaier, he is survived by three children; Sonya Conrad and husband Kim of Manhattan, Greg Pfizenmaier and wife Vicki of Green and Shelly Kolterman and husband Jay of Clay Center; one brother, Noel Pfizenmaier and wife Joy Deane of Randolph; eleven grandchildren, Brandon Pfizenmaier (Jill), Sheldon Pfizenmaier (Evy), Shantel Marrs (Josh), Cory Willmann (Becky), Tony Kolterman (Kadi), Jordan Kolterman (Cassity), Jayde Kolterman (Amanda), Ty Kolterman, Jami Hocker (Luke), Staci Stratman (Josh) and Melissa McClarty (Justin), and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Jodi Pfizenmaier.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Green Cemetery, south of Green, with Pastor Sarah Gill officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Gerald(Jerry) B. Winkler went home to his Heavenly Father on&nbsp;Wednesday, November 17, 2023, at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Seneca, Kansas, where&nbsp;he had been a resident for the past 3 1/2 months.&nbsp; He was 95 years old.

Jerry was born on&nbsp;October 18, 1928, in the Sabetha&nbsp;Hospital&nbsp;to Leo L. &amp; Agnes W. (Vondemkamp) Winkler.&nbsp; He grew up on the family farm south of Kelly. Jerry enjoyed playing baseball as did most boys in the Kelly area. Horses and rat terrier dogs were the other two things he really enjoyed; having a terrier, Nell, until he passed. He graduated from Kelly High School in 1946 and had the distinction of being the 2nd highest GPA in Nemaha County that year.

Service in the Korean Conflict was next on Uncle Sam's plan for Jerry.&nbsp; He was a member of the 25th Division, 69th Field Artillery Battalion.&nbsp; Jerry served from 1952 to 1953, being discharged at the rank of Sergeant First Class.&nbsp; &nbsp;He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star.&nbsp; Korea was also where he met his life long friend, William Bernhard of Bancroft, Iowa. Virginia, Jerry, Bill &amp; Marilyn spent many trips visiting each other. He was a member of the American Legion for 68 years.

Jerry was united in marriage with Virginia Dalinghaus on&nbsp;November 10, 1954, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville, Kansas.&nbsp; Virginia and Jerry celebrated 62 years of marriage before her passing in 2016.&nbsp; They raised their 3 children on their dairy farm east of Centralia.&nbsp; After selling the dairy cows, Jerry drove semi-trucks across the country for many years.&nbsp; Jerry enjoyed fixing anything that needed fixing and he always got the job done!&nbsp; In his later years he developed a passion for growing evergreen trees around his property.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Bede's Catholic Church &amp; also St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Left to cherish his memory are daughter; Carol (Randall) Tlachac, Plymouth, Minnesota, sons; Alan (Vicki) Winkler, Fort Worth, Texas and; Brian (Paula) Winkler, Marysville, Kansas.&nbsp; Grandchildren include, Stephen (Elizabeth) Tlachac, Erin (Chris) Musser, Jacob (Shannon) Winkler, Alex (Miranda) Winkler and Grace Winkler.&nbsp; Jerry was able to enjoy 6 great granddaughters; Everly, Charlea, Maggie, Josie, Lilly, and Maxine.&nbsp; Other survivors include Sister; Mary Jane (Jim) Boeding and Sister-in-law; Marilyn Winkler.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Brother, Ray Winker, passed away in&nbsp;June 2023.&nbsp;

Cremation was chosen with a memorial service planned for later with Christie-Anderes Funeral Home in Waterville.

Martha Louise McDonald, age 83 of Leonardville, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

She was born on September 29, 1940, the daughter of Willis Henry and Laura Iva (Styer) Beals.

On August 7, 1957, at Storm Lake, Iowa, she married Clyde Eldon McDonald.&nbsp; He preceded her in death in 2018.

She and Clyde owned and operated McDonald Auto Sales and Salvage for 60 years.&nbsp; During her younger years, she was a waitress at different restaurants in Leonardville, Riley and Randolph.&nbsp; Martha was an avid bingo player and loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by two sons, Elton McDonald and wife Vicki of Wakefield, and Tony McDonald and wife Debbie of Riley; two daughters, Jeanne Richter and husband Mark of Leonardville, and Marlene McDonald of Leonardville; one daughter-in-law, Tracy McDonald of Randolph; five grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Bryce McDonald; two brothers, James Beals and Ray Beals, and one great granddaughter, Madie Mall.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Dwight Diller officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Grandview-Mill Creek Cemetery.

Martha McDonald

Cassandra (Cassie) Lee Beninga, age 47, of Topeka, Kansas passed away unexpectedly due to a medical condition on Monday, November 20, 2023, at her home in Topeka.

Cassie was born on August 2,&nbsp;1976, in Manhattan, Kansas, the beloved daughter of Steven Thomas and Sandra Sue (Schwab) Beninga.&nbsp;

Upon graduation from Shawnee Heights High School in Topeka, she enrolled in Emporia State University. &nbsp;After a year she decided that college was not for her. She had completed the required training to become a&nbsp;Certified Nurse Aid and was employed by a nursing home while in high school and&nbsp;decided the health care field was better suited and more interesting to her. &nbsp;She enrolled at Kaw Valley Vo-Tech (Washburn Institute of Technology) and received &nbsp;her Associates Degree as a Surgical Technologist and completed the requirements to become Nationally Registered. Cassie started her career at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka in the operating room as a Surgical Technologist and worked there for six years. She then had the opportunity to move to the new Tallgrass Surgery Center and remained employed there since its first day opening in 2002. During the time Cassie was employed there she continued to receive training and accolades as a Surgical Technologist and completed the training to be a &nbsp;Sterilization Specialist, meeting the requirements to be nationally registered as a Certified Central Service Technician (CCST). &nbsp;She was always trying to be better at her job and pursued&nbsp;continuing education, obtaining multiple other certifications.&nbsp;

When not working, she enjoyed family, her close group of friends, K-State football and basketball, and of course her cats, which she called her fur babies and were all rescues. She also shared the love for two dogs with her parents.&nbsp;

One of Cassie’s passions in life was to make sure every abandoned cat and dog had a place to live and was taken care of. &nbsp;She&nbsp;volunteered at Helping Hands Humane Society finding supplies for them and fostering kittens. There was only one failed foster kitten when she decided to adopt the kitten. She also volunteered on various community activities which included volunteering at Topeka Performing Art Center.&nbsp;

Cassie is survived by her parents, Steve and Sandra (Susie) of Topeka, Kansas; two brothers, Christopher Beninga and wife Melanie of Austin, Texas and Jason Beninga of Topeka; one niece McKenna Beninga of Austin, Texas; three nephews, Mason Beninga of Austin Texas, Braiden Beninga of Topeka and Brenner Beninga of Topeka. &nbsp;She loved her niece and nephews with all her heart and had special nicknames for each.&nbsp; She is also survived by her aunt, Peggy Grater and husband Ron of Leonardville,&nbsp;along with many cousins in Kansas and Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and two uncles.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 SE Michigan Avenue, Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; There will be a visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. until service time. &nbsp;Cremation will follow the funeral and a private family inurnment will be in the Riley Cemetery at a later date.

Cassie was always more comfortable in casual clothes wearing shorts or fashionable sweatpants and a sweatshirt or medical scrubs. She would want others to be comfortable as well and would not be offended by dressing casually or having something purple or Kansas State related worn.

During the time Cassie was employed there she continued to receive training and accolades as a Surgical Technologist and completed the training to be a &nbsp;Sterilization Specialist, meeting the requirements to be nationally registered as a Certified Central Service Technician (CCST). &nbsp;She was always trying to be better at her job and pursued&nbsp;continuing education, obtaining multiple other certifications.&nbsp;When not working, she enjoyed family, her close group of friends, K-State football and basketball, and of course her cats, which she called her fur babies and were all rescues. She also shared the love for two dogs with her parents.&nbsp;One of Cassie’s passions in life was to make sure every abandoned cat and dog had a place to live and was taken care of. &nbsp;She&nbsp;volunteered at Helping Hands Humane Society finding supplies for them and fostering kittens. There was only one failed foster kitten when she decided to adopt the kitten. She also volunteered on various community activities which included volunteering at Topeka Performing Art Center.&nbsp;Cassie is survived by her parents, Steve and Sandra (Susie) of Topeka, Kansas; two brothers, Christopher Beninga and wife Melanie of Austin, Texas and Jason Beninga of Topeka; one niece McKenna Beninga of Austin, Texas; three nephews, Mason Beninga of Austin Texas, Braiden Beninga of Topeka and Brenner Beninga of Topeka. &nbsp;She loved her niece and nephews with all her heart and had special nicknames for each.&nbsp; She is also survived by her aunt, Peggy Grater and husband Ron of Leonardville,&nbsp;along with many cousins in Kansas and Colorado.She was preceded in death by her grandparents and two uncles.The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 SE Michigan Avenue, Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; There will be a visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. until service time. &nbsp;Cremation will follow the funeral and a private family inurnment will be in the Riley Cemetery at a later date.Cassie was always more comfortable in casual clothes wearing shorts or fashionable sweatpants and a sweatshirt or medical scrubs. Cassandra Beninga

Melinda Annette Hagenmaier, age 60, of Randolph, passed away Friday evening, November 24, 2023, at the KU Medical Center after a courageous three&nbsp;year long battle with colon cancer.

She was born on November 4,&nbsp;1963, the daughter of James &amp; Lucy (Parker) Wells, the youngest of nine children.&nbsp; She grew up in Kansas City, MO and finished her high school career in Minden, NE.&nbsp;

Melinda had worked for the United States Postal service for 11 years, most recently at the Clay Center office, where she enjoyed her co-workers and meeting and greeting her postal patrons.&nbsp; Melinda’s family meant everything to her, and she worked tirelessly showing her love to all of them.&nbsp; She was especially excited for the upcoming marriage of her son, Dakota and future daughter-in-law, Alexandria Capp and had recently hosted an engagement party for them.&nbsp; 

Melinda was surprised to have all her sisters show up to her house for an early 60th&nbsp;Birthday celebration to get her crown, which was passed down for each sister’s 60th&nbsp;Birthday.&nbsp; 

Melinda was very crafty, with Hobby Lobby being one of her favorite stops.&nbsp; She enjoyed decorating for the holidays, Christmas being her favorite, so she could display her large Santa collection.&nbsp; She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Nebraska Cornhusker football fan.&nbsp; 

She loved camping with family and her and Robbie had worked to renovate two campers, the first one lovingly known as “The Turd”.&nbsp; The second one she used as therapy to keep her mind busy while facing the daily challenges the cancer presented, which she met with strength and courage.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Hagenmaier of the home; two daughters, Kassie (Adam) Cote, &nbsp;and Khyla Nelson; one son Dakota Hagenmaier (Ali); her six grandchildren, Connor, Otto, Jocelyn, Aurora, Robyn and Oliver who were the light of her life; eight siblings, Judy (Jim) Runions, Gary (Sandy) Wells, Wayne (Judy) Wells, Diane (Gary) Currence, David (Brenda) Wells, Madonna (Bob) Bishop, Becky (Randy) Watson and Jimmy (Trish) Wells; two sisters-in-law, Lori (Jay) Anderson and Shelly (Marvin) Mugler; one brother-in-law, Dennis Hagenmaier and numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, James &amp; Lucy Wells.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on December 8, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nelson Family Community Foundation (NFCF) to assist with medical expenses for families in the community.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Melinda Hagenmaier

Barbara E. Christie, age 91, of Council Bluffs, passed away on November 25, 2023, at Hansen House Assisted Living in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Barb was born April 20, 1932, in Omaha, the daughter of Frederick J. and Doris (Rosch) Bucknam. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs in 1950, then from St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, as a registered X-Ray Technician. She married Robert P. “Bob” Christie on January 30, 1955, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Council Bluffs. He passed away in 1999.

Barb grew up in Council Bluffs and became world traveler when she married Bob. They lived in Germany and England while he was in the Air Force. After his retirement they returned to Council Bluffs. She ran her own business sewing and doing alterations, then working for the Pottawattamie County Treasurer’s office where she became a Deputy County Treasurer. 

After retirement her two passions were St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and the Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society. When she wasn’t busy at church or the PCGS, she kept her hands busy doing handcrafts, sewing, knitting, crochet, tatting, counted cross stitch and time with friends. There were many other things about Barb that could be written; her family hopes you are blessed by your memories of them.

Survivors include her two children: Mary Sue (Bob) White of Omaha and Rod (Melinda) Christie of Waterville, Kansas, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and by Aunt Betty and Aunt Carol.
