Jane Ann (Stratton) Runyan, age 88, of Grinnell, Iowa died Monday evening, October 10, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills, in Manhattan, Kansas with her family by her bedside.

Jane was raised and grew up on a farm in Maxwell, Iowa where she met her lifelong friends Roberta and Paul Viers. She attended K-12 in Maxwell, graduating from Maxwell High School in 1952. After graduating from High School, Jane attended the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls. Following her sophomore year Jane met and married John Avery Runyan from Collins, Iowa on October 2, 1954.

Jane worked for WHO-Radio/TV to support her husband through college at Drake University. She dedicated herself to raising her young family, while supporting her husband as his career was being established. Together they moved multiple times beginning in Des Moines, Iowa (1955), Gary/Valparaiso, IN (1956 to 1963), Pittsburgh, PA (1964 to 1967), Detroit, MI (1968 to 1969), Anniston, AL (1969 to 1972), Morgantown, WV (1972 to 1974), Montreal Quebec (1974 to 1976), and then finally settling in Grinnell, Iowa (1976).

Jane is survived by her six children: Rhonda Hudson, Grinnell, Iowa; Robin Runyan (Carol), Pennsauken, New Jersey; Ryan Runyan (Sharon), Manhattan, KS; Roberta Moore (Scott) Dallas, Georgia; Paul Runyan (Kathy) Webster City, Iowa; and Rachele Pang (Davin), Gilbert, Arizona. Jane’s youngest sister, Mary Lou Dahms, of Traer, Iowa; her 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her best friend Roberta Viers, son in law Marc Hudson, her brother Paul, sister Lois Seebach and brother-in-laws, Loren Seebach and Richard ‘Dick’ Dahms, and her granddaughter, Metta Runyan.

Jane worked for GTE in Grinnell, Iowa for over 19 years and retiring from the company in 1990. Following her retirement from GTE, Jane spent the next 20 years as a Sorority/Fraternity house mom at Kansas State University, Iowa State University - University of Iowa and Arizona State. During her summer breaks she enjoyed traveling to visit her children. She loved the young students she served as a “House Mother,” which also allowed her to live close to her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; Jane loved her grandchildren and took great pride planning tea parties for them, playing Pinochle, singing family songs she would write herself and dressing up in costumes for Halloween.

In 1996, Jane along with her best friend, Roberta Viers and daughter Roberta were security volunteers for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia and was adopted by many of the USA Basketball players. We can’t stress this enough---Jane’s passion in life was her family and the love of her life were her 6 children, her 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Jane was a believer in Jesus Christ and was baptized in the United Methodist Church denomination.

The family will greet friends during a visitation on April 14, 2023 with a Memorial Service to be held on April 15, 2023, times will be announced at later date.

Shirley Mae Cummings, 81, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, October 6, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

She was born June 20, 1941, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Freeman E. and Nita M. (Stricklin) Biery. She lived most of her younger years in Manchester and Mankato, Kansas. After she graduated from Mankato High School she worked for Kansas State University until her retirement. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan.

She married Richard A. Cummings in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta on August 24, 1968. They had one daughter, Gloria M. Cummings. Richard predeceased her on July 24, 2021.

Shirley is survived by daughter Gloria of Manhattan, and her five siblings, Terry L. Biery, Bonnie F. Biery, Galen E. (Cheryl) Biery, Rick F. (Maureen) Biery, and Teresa E. (Cynthia) Biery, eight nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She will be remembered for her love of family and her desire to see and hear about them and all their activities.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Via Christi Village for the care and concern for Shirley’s comfort and well-being.

Ella Mae Kimmal, 82, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday (September 16, 2022) at her home surrounded by her family under the care of St. Croix Hospice.&nbsp; She went to be in her Heavenly Home and joined her husband, Richard, who passed away on September 11, 2022.

Born October 13, 1939 in Aurora, Kansas, Ella Mae was the daughter of Octave and Etta (Chaput) Istas.

Ella Mae was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and the St. Bernard Guild.&nbsp; She was an accomplished seamstress, quilter, and cook and enjoyed teaching these skills to many people over the years.&nbsp; A strong faith, positive outlook on life, and sense of humor made Ella Mae a blessing to be around and she was the happiest when giving of herself and helping others in need.&nbsp; She cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was employed as a bookkeeper for Kaw Valley State Bank for many years until her retirement.

Ella Mae married her high school sweetheart, Richard L. Kimmal on November 16, 1957, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia, KS. He preceded her in death on September 11, 2022. They enjoyed nearly 65 years of marriage and shared their love with three children, Cindy Bisnette (Tim) of Wamego, KS, Jerry Kimmal of Concordia, KS, and Kathy Wagoner (Paul) of Wamego, KS. Ella enjoyed being a grandmother to Jamie Swanson (Erik), Sam Bisnette (Magda), Adam Bisnette (Shanna), Jenna Barlow (Scott), and Megan Kugler (Jake) as well as to her twelve great-grandchildren, Keegan, Ameliah, and Emery Swanson, Isaac, Elijah, and Caleb Bisnette, Brenn, Blake and Trey Barlow, and Jax, Kate and Ava Kugler. She is also survived by her sister, Theresa Peltier (Jim) of Concordia, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Ella Mae was preceded in death by her parents; and thirteen siblings, Eldon, Art, Verle, Pat, Buck, Bill, Neoma, Clara, Marceline, Pauline, Marie, Gladys and Melvin.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

A Memorial Mass for Richard and Ella Mae will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (October 22, 2022) at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego.&nbsp; They will be inurned together at St. Bernard’s Cemetery.

Born December 16, 1951, in Romford, England, Irene was the daughter of Jorgen Scheuer and Phyllis Elsie (Savage) Rasmussen. Irene married Lee Provencher on December 27, 1976, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Irene was an avid antique collector, yard sale bargainer and was passionate about interior design&nbsp;and decorating. She made everything in the home beautiful for her beloved family. Irene was known for her quirky sense of humor, free spirited approach to life and love of Shih Tzu dogs.

Irene worked many years in the restaurant business as an owner/operator and as a diamond consultant in the retail jewelry industry.

&nbsp;Irene was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband Lee Provencher, children: Rachel Meltzer (Larry); Matthew Provencher (Theresa) and grandchildren: Ryan, Max, Sam, Rosie and Sophia.

Ralph M. Bieker, of Hoxie, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 
2022, at the age of ninety at Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term 
Care. He was born in Grainfield, Kansas, to Ludwig and Ludwina (Munsch) 
Bieker on October 26, 1931. He grew up in Hoxie, Kansas and attended 
Sheridan Community High School graduating with the class of 1950. After 
graduating from high school, Ralph entered the United States Army. He 
served his country for two years working as office personnel at Fort 
Riley Army Base. Upon discharge from the Army Ralph returned to Hoxie, 
Kansas where he worked and lived for the rest of his life.

Ralph
 worked for Central Kansas Power Company, and then for Summerson 
Abstract Company as an abstractor until he retired in 1976. Ralph was a 
well-known photographer and took pictures for weddings, senior class 
pictures, and many other occasions. He also sold monuments for the Smith
 Monument Company. Ralph was a worker, but he also enjoyed playing golf 
and could often be found out on the golf course. He loved his family and
 enjoyed his many nieces and nephews. He was a faithful member of the 
St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Ralph
 is survived by his brothers, Eugene Bieker and wife Pauletta of 
Oberlin, Kansas; Alexander Bieker and wife, Willetta of McCook, 
Nebraska; sisters, Eleanora Douglass of Afton, Oklahoma; Mary Kathern 
Sanders and Elizabeth Stillman of Hoxie, Kansas; sisters-in-law, 
Virginia Bieker, Arlene Bieker,  Sue Bieker; and many nieces, nephews, 
and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents,

Evelyn Marie Werth, age 97, residing at
 The Piper, Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022, in
 Kansas City.&nbsp; She was born August 2, 1925, to Adam B. and Susie G. 
(Adam) Garvert.&nbsp; She married Edwin W. Werth on Aug. 30, 1950, in 
Plainville, Kansas.

She was a member of the Schoenchen Altar Society and St. Joseph Church of Hays for many years.

Survivors include five daughters: Diane
 Hochman, Kansas City, KS; Marilyn Davis, Missoula, MT; Janet Allington,
 Topeka, KS; Carol Werth, Charlotte, NC; Donna Kunkel, Overland Park, 
KS; five sons: Dale, Springfield, VA; Keith, Modesto, CA; Russell, 
Junction City, KS; Ronald, Wichita, KS; Duane, Olathe, KS; a brother: 
Howard Garvert, Plainville, KS; one sister: Madlyn Rietcheck, Manhattan,
 KS; ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, daughters Joyce and Dorothy, and son Norman.

 Friday, October 21, 2022 at St. Anthony Church, Schoenchen, KS, with 
Fr. Curtis Carlson officiating. Burial will follow in the church

Roland Eugene Nuss, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at his 
home. He was born June 29, 1945, in St. Joseph, MO, to Roland B. and 
Henrietta L. (Gagelman) Nuss.

Roland graduated from Great Bend High School in 1963 and received his
 bachelors in Business from Fort Hays State University in 1967. Roland 
worked as a buyer for Dillons, supervisor for Kwik Shop, and in sales at
 Collins Bus and Cabinet Connections. He loved the mountains, his 
Tuesday morning coffee group, Tuesday night tennis group, watching 
sports of all kinds – especially K-State and Salthawk sports - with 
Rita, and spending time with his family most of all. Roland was a 
long-time devoted member of Eastwood Church of Christ where he had 
served as a deacon.

On June 5, 1971, Roland married Rita K. Woods, in Dodge City. She survives.

Also surviving are: his daughters, Melissa Thorne (Gavin) of Windsor,
 CO, Jennifer Farr (Jamie) of Junction City; and grandchildren, Grady 
and Kinley Thorne and Mason and Colin Farr.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2022, at Eastwood
 Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum St., Hutchinson, with ministers Wayne 
DeWindt and Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to
 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m., with the family present to receive 
friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Cremation will follow with a private family scattering in his beloved mountains at a later date.

Roland Eugene Nuss

Chase Garrett Ehlers, the son of Ted and Marcia (Dunn) Ehlers, was 
born on June 12, 1996 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He passed away on October 10,
 2022 at Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 26 years, 3 months, 28 days.

Chase was baptized in the Webber United Methodist Church. 
Growing up, Chase attended many schools including Mt. View Elementary in
 Mt. View, Hawaii; North Polk Elementary School in Fort Polk, Louisiana;
 Stowers Elementary in Fort Benning, Georgia; Chapman Middle School in 
Chapman, Kansas and was a graduate of Lawrence/Nelson High School in 
Nelson, Nebraska. After graduating he attended the University of 
Nebraska for a time before enlisting in the United States Army on June 
22, 2015 earning the National Defense service medal and Army service 
Ribbon. Chase was honorably discharged on December 20, 2017 and 
continued his education at the Kansas State University where he 
presently was enrolled.

Throughout Chase’s life, he lived in the communities of Helemano,
 HI, Fort Benning, GA, Mountain View, HI, Fort Polk, LA, Chapman, KS, 
Nelson, NE, presently living in Manhattan, KS.

Chase was preceded in death by his grandparents Duane and Pat 
Ehlers. Survivors include his parents Ted and Marcia and his brother 
Nash all of Chapman, Kansas; grandparents Don and Ardythe Dunn of 
Deshler, Nebraska and Paul and Linda Hutchinson of Superior, Nebraska; 
Aunts and Uncles Melanie and Ryan Mikkelsen of Ruskin, Nebraska; Tanya 
and Brandon Lynch of Raymond, Nebraska; Michelle &amp; Greg Perkins of 
Reeds Spring, Missouri; Dawn and Larry Miller of Nelson, Nebraska; Brian
 and Sharon Soulek of Charlestown, Indiana; Devrie and Brian Hahn of 
Dallas, Texas; Ty and Michelle Ehlers of Norfolk, Virginia; John and

Chase Garrett Ehlers

Jack Lloyd Mace, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at Hospice
 House. He was born November 26, 1944, in Sterling, to Lloyd Valentine 
and Violet Sophia (Wibbeler) Mace.

Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962. He then attended 
Bethel College, and Mennonite Biblical Seminary earning his master’s 
degree. Jack worked as a draftsman, photographer, and several 
construction companies. However, his favorite job was being a substitute
 teacher for local school districts.

Jack was an artist, he enjoyed making paintings, drawings, and 
woodwork. His biggest passion was helping people, especially those 
facing adversity. Jack helped start Interfaith Housing and Community 
Services, in Hutchinson, and with special education classes at 
Hutchinson High School. Jack never knew a stranger and was quite the 
jokester, he enjoyed cracking jokes with the staff caring for him during
 his final days.

Jack was a loving husband, father and a very active member of First Mennonite Church, in Hutchinson.

On June 14, 1964, he married the love of his life, Deanna Klaassen at Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge.

Jack is survived by: his wife, Deanna Mace of Hutchinson; sons, 
Brandon Mace of Wichita, and Brian Mace of Arlington, TX; brothers, 
Eugene (Sally) Mace of Peoria, IL, and Glenn (Marilee) Mace of Sterling;
 sister, Wanda Hart of Norman, OK; and a sister-in-law, Andrea Mace of 
Junction City.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Naomi Phinney; brothers, Alvin Mace and his wife Martha, and Ron Mace. &nbsp;

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at 
First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Rd, Hutchinson, with Pastor, Tonya 
Wenger officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Jack Lloyd Mace

Carolyn Sue “Nana” Knorr, age 72, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022 at the Leonardville Nursing Home.

She was born on February 3, 1950 in San Diego, California, the daughter of LaVonne Franklin and Mary Louise (Herrod) Bird.&nbsp; She was one of seven children.

She is survived by four daughters, Marlo Hoffman and husband Josh, Danyale Knorr, Lisa Bailey and husband Daniel, Mari Graham and husband Shannon; thirteen grandchildren, Boo Boo, Devin, Sissy, Hanny Banany, Bubby, Randi Pants, Timmer, Kelli bug, Lizard, Emmy Lou, Davey boy, Annie, and Brooky Bear; four great grandchildren and one sibling, Pamela Hernandez of Santee, California.

She worked in a variety of jobs throughout her life, but always enjoyed working and volunteering at the Leonardville Nursing Home.&nbsp; Her grandchildren were her life.&nbsp;Nana was a free spirit. She was an incredible storyteller with the gift of humor.&nbsp;Her creative side was displayed by her arts and crafts and drawings.&nbsp;Nana was authentic, a genuine human, a comedic hippie, a bona-fide gladiator, and the matriarch of the pinky clan. PINKY!! The Nan, the myth, the legend!!

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of Life to be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 19, 2022 at the Alert Covenant Church.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will be in the Leonardville City Cemetery.

Linda Diane Mays, age 72 of Green, was called to heaven on October 7, 2022.

She was born on February 4, 1950 in Clay Center, the daughter of Orville and Lois Asp.

On June 8, 1971, she married Roland Dean Mays at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Clay Center.&nbsp; To this union, two daughters were born, Jennifer Diane on April 11, 1972 and Katie Nicole on February 5, 1981.

Two sons-in-law became family when Michael Anderson married Katie on June 27, 1998 and Jonathan Wilson married Jennifer on June 29, 2002.

Linda’s four grandchildren were the light of her life.&nbsp; Kurtis Dean Anderson - August 25, 1998, Joshua Michael Wilson - August 8, 2005, Joseph Dean Wilson - February 8, 2007 and Lillian Kay Anderson - July 4, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert and her grandson, Kurtis Anderson.

She is survived by her husband, Roland Mays of Green; her daughters, Jenny (Jon) Wilson of Cordell, Oklahoma and Katie (Mike) Anderson of Green; her sister, Kim (Stan) Fry of Green; three grandchildren, Josh Wilson, Joe Wilson and Lilly Anderson and a host of other family and friends.

Linda Diane Mays

On Tuesday, October 11th, Daniel (Dan) Lee Jones passed away in Abilene, Kansas. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He was 73. Dan was born to Harry and Margaret Jones on October 24,1948 in Junction City, KS. He lived for many years in Enterprise until his family moved to Chapman when he was in middle school. His family were members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman. In 1966, he graduated from Dickinson County Community High School. He attended Kansas State Technical Institute in Salina and received an associate degree in Airframe &amp; Powerplant as well as Computer Science. He married Christine (Chris) Schlesener on July 29, 1974. Together, Dan and Chris moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and worked for Applied Automation which was later acquired by ABB. He worked as a computer systems analyst for 37 years until he retired in 2011. He was proud of the work he did and he valued the relationships and friendships he formed along the way. His main goal was to make everyone else's job easier. In 2016, Dan &amp; Chris moved full time to their lake home on Grand Lake in Jay, Oklahoma. Dan enjoyed fixing up this home for his family and friends and always had a to-do list with many projects. He was a man with many hidden talents from working on cars, to electrical and plumbing. There was never a task that he wouldn’t try. Dan also loved fishing, hunting, and sightseeing at Grand Lake but his true love was spending time with his daughters and granddaughters. There was never a play, performance, or athletic competition that he missed. When his daughters were growing up, he could be found volunteering his time coaching many youth sports teams in the Bartlesville area including Washington County and Blazer ASA Softball. He also coached many YMCA and AAU Basketball teams. He was passionate about teaching everyone to play the game the correct way and believed that so many life lessons could be learned by playing sports. He loved his alma mater, The Chapman Irish, and would be seen and heard at many sporting events loudly cheering them on. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Mike Dolton. He is survived by his wife Chris of 48 years; his daughters, Dr. Stacy Jones of Salina, KS and Sara (Kyle) Cook and granddaughters Callie and Madison Cook of Chapman, KS. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane Dolton of Salina, KS and Kathy Riffel of Topeka, KS as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman, KS from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 17 at 10 a.m. at St.&nbsp; Michael’s followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Chapman.

He married Christine (Chris) Schlesener on July 29, 1974. Together, Dan and Chris moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and worked for Applied Automation which was later acquired by ABB. He worked as a computer systems analyst for 37 years until he retired in 2011. He was proud of the work he did and he valued the relationships and friendships he formed along the way. His main goal was to make everyone else's job easier. In 2016, Dan &amp; Chris moved full time to their lake home on Grand Lake in Jay, Oklahoma. Dan enjoyed fixing up this home for his family and friends and always had a to-do list with many projects. He was a man with many hidden talents from working on cars, to electrical and plumbing. There was never a task that he wouldn’t try. Dan also loved fishing, hunting, and sightseeing at Grand Lake but his true love was spending time with his daughters and granddaughters. There was never a play, performance, or athletic competition that he missed. When his daughters were growing up, he could be found volunteering his time coaching many youth sports teams in the Bartlesville area including Washington County and Blazer ASA Softball. He also coached many YMCA and AAU Basketball teams. He was passionate about teaching everyone to play the game the correct way and believed that so many life lessons could be learned by playing sports. He loved his alma mater, The Chapman Irish, and would be seen and heard at many sporting events loudly cheering them on. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Mike Dolton. He is survived by his wife Chris of 48 years; his daughters, Dr. Stacy Jones of Salina, KS and Sara (Kyle) Cook and granddaughters Callie and Madison Cook of Chapman, KS. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane Dolton of Salina, KS and Kathy Riffel of Topeka, KS as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman, KS from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 17 at 10 a.m. at St.&nbsp; Michael’s followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Chapman. Wilma Jean Anderson, age 93, of Manhattan, died October 9, 2022, at Stoneybrook Retirement Community.

She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1947. She was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler for many years.

Survivors include her three daughters: Wanda Sue Edinger and Karen Kay Humphrey and her husband Robert Harris all of Broken Bow, OK, and Lea Ann Eichem and her husband Tony of Belvue, KS; two grandchildren: Randall Gillette and Shana Jahnke; seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son Chuck; two grandchildren: Kassandra and Anglea; and her brother Don Wilkinson.

Mark Samuel Weis lived his fifty-eight years on earth with a full heart, a bright smile, and an unrelenting spirit. When he was a child he pursued his love of music, nature, service, and athletics. During his time at Manhattan High school he played Varsity Basketball, sang in the school choir (Chamber and Pops choir) and earned his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. During his time as a scout he was selected to participate in the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and Scout High-Adventure Camp in Canada, which are high honors in the Eagle Scout program. When he was just sixteen he went to live in Peru for a summer, where he became fluent in Spanish. After returning to the United States and graduating from Manhattan High School with honors he attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a double bachelors in Biology and English (again with honors) while making memories with his brothers in Kappa Sigma fraternity. He accomplished his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, after attending medical school at Kansas as well, a double Jayhawk. During his life he used his creativity combined with his knowledge of medicine to undertake several entrepreneurship endeavors. In his later years he became an author, and accomplished the feat of having six different books published. But most importantly, he lived his life as a devout Christian, a true believer; one who would share his love and fear of God with anyone and everyone would listen. At just twenty-four years old he embarked on a Mission trip for Mercy Ships, where he helped treat and heal children with cleft palates in Jamaica; and witnessed to the people there in Christ name.

At thirty-five years old, he persevered through a medical condition that would have left most people in a state of defeat. While living in Bowling Green, Kentucky and working as a doctor; he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. A tragic fate for anyone, but even more devastating for a man beginning his career, who at the time had a five-year old son and a two-year old daughter. But he met his disease without fear, and agreed to undergo, what was at the time; an experimental procedure to remove his tumor and save his life. He went to Boston to be treated by Harvard University’s Head Neurosurgeon, Dr. Peter McLaren Black. He received that surgery, knowing that he only had a 10% chance of waking up from it. But, with God at his side, he had no fear. He felt he had to do whatever it took to survive; to be a father to his children. He survived that lobotomy, losing fifteen percent of his brain in the process, but retaining his life. His doctors called his recovery a “miracle.” He felt that every day was a gift after that, and he treated the next twenty-three years after that surgery with love and gratitude.

Surviving that surgery had a cost, it led to him having many seizures, pain and an overall health decline for the rest of his life; which, like everything else, he faced with a righteous level of bravery. The way he handled it, you would have thought his seizures were a mild inconvenience to him. Every problem in his life that would be absolutely traumatic for most people, he took in stride. Two years after receiving that surgery, in 2002 he undertook another mission trip, this time to Africa. Where he treated two different tribes in Tanzania and Kenya with medical issues while delivering the Word of God. He loved his life, he loved Jesus, and he loved his family with his whole heart. That love drove him to conquer every obstacle in his way.

In 2007 he began his own medical practice in Lexington, Kentucky. The success he cultivated there led to him being offered a job in 2009 at Fort Riley where he became the head of their “RESPECT-Mil” program which treated veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After proving his value in treating the nations’ soldiers he moved to Washington D.C., and began working at the prestigious Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was the lead primary care proponent for the U.S. Department of Defense suicide-prevention team (RESPECT-Mil). In 2012 he decided that he had accomplished everything he wanted to as a doctor, and began writing books, became published several times over, and pursued his own creative medical entrepreneurship endeavors. He wanted to help people with technology he thought would be the forefront of health for years to come, including hormone therapy, stem cells, and alternative medicine. He pursued these business interests in Phoenix, Arizona, a place he felt a special bond with and where he could be close to his beloved brother (Ted Weis), his nieces (Isabella and Julia Weis) and his daughter who he adored (Caroline Weis).

Although he left us far too soon and unexpectedly, his family will always hold on to the unconditional love he gave us. Mark was preceded in his passing, by the passing of his father, Dr. Jerry Samuel Weis just a month prior in August 2022. The month before Mark’s passing, he spent his time in Manhattan, Kansas, taking care of his grieving mother (Linda Weis) who was mourning the loss of her husband (Jerry Weis). Mark quite literally spent his whole life helping others and spreading love. It gives his family comfort knowing he is at peace with his Lord, Jesus Christ in Paradise.

Mark is survived by his two children: Wilson and Caroline; his mother Linda B. Weis; two siblings: Ted and Stephanie Grynkiewicz (Ross); and three nieces and one nephew: Isabella and Julia Weis, Joshua and Samantha Grynkiewicz.

A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 28, 2022, at the First Lutheran Church, 930 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, with Reverend Stephen Haverlah officiating. Inurnment will be in Sunrise Cemetery next to his father.

Mildred Almetta Fehlman, age 96, died October 10, 2022, at the Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman, KS.

 She was born October 24, 1925, to Albert and Selma (Sylvester) Nitsche in Riley, KS. Mildred spent her childhood in the Riley area.&nbsp; She graduated from Riley High School in 1943.&nbsp; Mildred worked on the family farm as well as helped take care of other family and children. She spent a small amount of time as a young woman working at the elevator. Mildred married Harold Fehlman on August 24, 1950. They made their home on Harold’s family homestead in Wakefield, where they stayed their entire marriage. Mildred was a member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, EHU, and the Priscilla Club.&nbsp; She spent many years as a 4-H and Project Leader. Her family received the Kansas 4-H family of the year award in 1984. Mildred was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing and knitting. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Alberta and Warren Hofmann; and a step-granddaughter, Alicia Fehlman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Rose Ella Strunk Curran, his son, Steve Curran (Jennifer), daughter Pam (Jack) Sims, 9 grandchildren (Jessi, Charlie, Jodi, Beth, John, Ted, Martha, Mattie, Julian), and 13 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by parents Bryan and Marie and siblings Robert, Harold, Dorothy, Marvin, Mary Lou, Duane, and Delores Curran.

Delmar was raised in the Buckeye Community and married Rose Ella in Abilene. He started working for Abilene Flour Mills during his high school years and then was transferred to Kansas City as a professional Miller for ADM Milling in 1972. After a 47-year career in Milling, he and Rosie retired back to Abilene. He achieved Emeritus status as a member of the Association of Operative Millers. After retirement he farmed for the Wilson Family Farm well into his 80’s.

Delmar and Rosie have been passionate supporters of the Abilene and Dickinson County Communities. He has served as President of Kiwanis, life-long member and a Trustee of the Elks organization, volunteered at the Abilene Hospital, sat on the Board at the Abilene Library, and has supported the Dickinson County Community Foundation since its inception.

Delmar had a calming presence, a welcoming personality and was instantly loved by everyone he met. His empathy for others held no bounds. He has touched all of our hearts and has left an imprint that will last forever on our souls.

Delmar Paul Curran

Lavonne Kay Horchem, 91, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 6, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills retirement community in Manhattan, Kansas. She was born Sept. 20, 1931, at home in Utica, Kansas, the daughter of Ephriam “Pete” Gerald and Martha Matilda (Schwindt) Bernbeck.

She graduated from Utica High School and Kansas State University.

She married Richard “Dick” Gayle Horchem Aug. 16, 1953, in the First Christian Church in Utica. They made their home in Ness City, Kansas, where they raised their three sons.

Kay is survived by two sons, Brad (Cindy) Horchem, Manhattan, Kansas, and Todd (Brenda) Horchem, Ness City; four grandchildren, Travis Horchem, Newton, Kansas; Megan (George) Heyns, Kansas City, Missouri; Kali (Mark) Solomon, Wichita, Kansas; and Jana Horchem, Englewood, Colorado; and five great-grandchildren, Aiyana, Adijah and Ajani Solomon, and Van and Vivian Horchem.

In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Elvira Kilroy, Nokomis, Florida; and Wanda McKenzie, Gold Canyon, Arizona; one brother, Gary (Anita) Bernbeck, Grand Junction, Colorado; a sister-in-law Linda (Terry) Claycamp, Hays, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews. Petros Levis joined the family as an exchange student from Greece during his senior year of high school. Petros and his wife, Ann, Denver, remain a part of the family.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Craig Horchem, and two brothers, Don Bernbeck and Gerald Bernbeck.

Kay taught in the Ness City School District for many years. She was active in various community organizations and supported numerous charities over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Ness County Bank Building Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or any organization of the donor’s choice. Lavonne Kay Horchem, 91, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 6, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills retirement community in Manhattan, Kansas. She was born Sept. 20, 1931, at home in Utica, Kansas, the daughter of Ephriam “Pete” Gerald and Martha Matilda (Schwindt) Bernbeck.She graduated from Utica High School and Kansas State University. She married Richard “Dick” Gayle Horchem Aug. 16, 1953, in the First Christian Church in Utica. They made their home in Ness City, Kansas, where they raised their three sons. Charles “Charlie” Leo Degenhardt, 68, of Alma, Kansas, died Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Post Acute Medical Center in Victoria, Texas. He was a life-long resident of the area. Charlie owned and operated Auto Master Repair and Service in Manhattan.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Moege) Degenhardt, and his daughters, Crystal Marshall (JaCory) and Denise Dlugosch (Brian).

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma, Kansas. Burial will follow in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery. Virginia “Ginny” Caldwell, 85, of Topeka, went to be with our Lord 
&amp; Savior on Oct 9, 2022. 

Ginny was born October 13, 1936, in Big 
Spring, Texas, the daughter of Joseph S. and Lois A. (Sears) Carpenter. 
She graduated from Big Spring High School and attended Howard Community 
College where she received an Associate of Arts Degree in bookkeeping. 
She worked at a cotton gin and later served as a deputy sheriff in Big 
Spring.&nbsp;Ginny and Harold (Hal) Caldwell married on July 27, 1962 and 
were married over 53 years until Hal’s death in 2016. They lived in 
several states and completed two tours in Germany while Hal was in the 
service, finally settling in Alta Vista, Kansas. 

Later moving to 
Manhattan, Ginny and Hal owned and operated Hal’s Plumbing. Ginny 
attended courses through Kansas State University studying Horticulture 
and Natural Resources. She loved her dogs, cats, chickens, gardening, 
flowers, nature, puzzles, and collecting angel figurines and Christmas 
Village decorations. She was devoted to her family and her faith, an 
active church member, and a loving guide to her girls, grandchildren, 
and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include her two daughters Cindy Kay Arnett and husband 
Dale, and Wendy L. Henault and husband Perry; grandchildren, Jessica 
Dawn Bradstreet, Jeremie Kay Orona Stanley (Derek), Christopher Joseph 
Bradstreet (Bridget), Brendan Henault (Jessica), Trace Henault, and 
great-grandchildren; Tyler Orona Stanley, Alexander Bradstreet, 
Azkadelia Bradstreet, and Veronica Orona Stanley; and her companion for 
the past three years, Ron Bruce.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents and her brother and 
sister, Eugene Carpenter and Marilyn Fortson and her husband Harold 
Caldwell.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 10:00 
am at Westview Community Church, Manhattan, KS. Reception to follow

Yoneko “Nicky” Matson, 89, passed away on October 6, 2022, at her home 
surrounded by her family. She was born March 15, 1933, in Sapporo, 
Hokkaido, Japan, daughter of the late Shomatsu and Tsuya (Meguro) Shima. 
She met her loving husband, Charles Edwin Matson, in Japan while he was 
serving in the U.S. Army. They were married in 1963 and celebrated 58 
years together.

She was a longtime member 
of the First Southern Baptist Church in Junction City where she served 
faithfully for many years in various roles such as church secretary, 
Sunday school teacher, and deacons’ wife. Most recently she was a member
 of Center Bethel Church in Parsons.

She loved spending time with 
her family and being active in the community. She served as a Den Mother
 for several years for the BSA, and was part of both a mixed and women’s
 bowling league for many years, including Women’s State Championship 
Bowling Team in 1978.

After retirement, she stayed 
active in several community YMCA Senior programs such as water aerobics,
 crafts and line dancing. She was an avid seamstress and loved to cook, 
bake, garden, and travel. Her kindness, generosity and adventurous 
spirit left a lasting effect on all who were blessed to know her.

She
 will be greatly missed by her son Richard Matson (Alyson) of Michigan, 
and their children: Hannah Ruth also of Michigan, and Gareth Matson 
(Hannah) of California. Her daughter, Lisa Payne (Rick) and their 
children: Kristin Payne (Adam), Trey Payne (Brittany) and Matthew Payne 
(Bailey) all of Parsons. As well as three great grandchildren; Ellie, 
Andy and JR Payne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 
siblings, her husband - Charles Edwin Matson, infant son Raymond Lee 
Matson and great grandson Daniel Isaiah Payne.

The
 family wishes to thank the staff of Labette Health for their care 
during her six years in Parsons and also the staff of Harry Hines 
Hospice for their thoughtfulness and caring during these last few 
months.

A celebration of her life will be at
 2pm Thursday, Oct 13, at the Carson Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, Ks with
 Pastor Drew Weidert officiating. Private committal services will be at 
Fort Scott National Cemetery.

Kem Lizzette Perkins passed away October 7, 2022. She was born in Junction City on October, 21, 1959 to Earl and Betty (Pitts) Perkins.&nbsp;Kem graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1978. Following her graduation she traveled to Germany, and Maryland with her former husband, Michael Jones. She returned to Kansas residing in Topeka with her partner Stanley Maple and finally Abilene in 2020. She spent time with her brother Rico and sister-in-law Nancy while recovering from a stroke. She was a resident at Village Manor and dearly loved her caregivers. Kem was known for her strong will and tenacious love for her children, grandchildren and friends. Especially her best friend &nbsp;LaDonna Smith, who she can now share memories with in heaven.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James I. Beasley, She is survived by her brothers: Moses White, Earl H. Perkins, Jr., Eugene Perkins, Larry (Diane) D. Perkins, Sr., and Richard (Nancy) Perkins and sister Beatrice K. Perkins; daughter Ra’Vann Jones and son Michael Jones and grandchildren Michael, Na’Shiya, Xahvia, Kyla and many nieces, nephews and cousins.&nbsp;Celebration of life service will be&nbsp;at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022&nbsp;at the Junction City Elks Lodge on 723 S.
