LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Devin Neal ran for 112 yards and the go-ahead touchdown for Kansas with 55 seconds left, Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel threw incomplete to the end zone on the final play of the game, and the Jayhawks beat the sixth-ranked Sooners 38-33 on Saturday.

Kansas snapped an 18-game losing streak to the Sooners in their final matchup before they depart for the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference, and they became the highest-ranked opponent the Jayhawks have beaten since a win over Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl.

The Jayhawks (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) looked as if they'd given away an opportunity to win the game when Jason Bean was picked off with 2:29 to go. But their defense forced the Sooners (7-1, 4-1) to punt, and after two long completions and a fourth-down throw that picked up 37 yards, Neal scampered in from 9 out to give Kansas the lead back — but Oklahoma's offense another shot with the ball.

The Sooners still had a chance to salvage their perfect record when Gabriel completed a 39-yard pass to Brenan Thompson to get to the Kansas 34 with 24 seconds left. But after a short throw to Jovantae Barnes and an incompletion, Gabriel — under heavy pressure — threw high to the end zone on the final play to touch off a field-storming celebration in Lawrence.

Bean threw for 218 yards and two interceptions, both in the fourth quarter, while running for 62 yards and a score. Daniel Hishaw also had two TD runs for the Jayhawks, who had not beaten Oklahoma since October 4, 1997.

Gabriel threw for 171 yards with three touchdown runs, and Tawee Walker ran for 146 yards and a score, as the Sooners were left to lament too many missed opportunities down the stretch to keep their perfect record intact.

Until the fourth quarter, it had been a dreary Homecoming for the Jayhawks.

The sellout crowd packed Memorial Stadium early to watch Fox's pregame show, then started getting wet when rain moved in after kickoff. Midway through the second quarter, lightning lit up the sky, causing a delay of about an hour. And when the game finally resumed, about half that crowd was left — and a big portion of that was chanting “Boomer Sooner.”

The Jayhawks had jumped to a 14-0 lead when Mello Dotson returned Gabriel's interception for a touchdown and, after a fourth-down stand, they promptly marched 79 yards in 10 plays with Hishaw reaching the end zone.

But the Oklahoma offense, which was struggling without injured running back Marcus Major, found its stride when Walker checked in. The junior running back led them downfield before Gabriel scored on a keeper early in the second quarter, and when the lightning delay ended, Walker capped another drive with a tying touchdown of his own.

When the Jayhawks fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Gabriel needed just four plays to get the Sooners in the end zone again.

The game turned into a seesaw affair over the final 30 minutes.

Kansas drew within 21-20 on field goals on each side of halftime, then took the lead back in third quarter. Jalil Farooq fumbled the ball away in Oklahoma territory, and Bean ran 38 yards untouched on the very next play for the score.

The Sooners answered with a 75-yard touchdown march to take a 27-26 lead, only for the Jayhawks to take advantage of three personal fouls — including one on the Oklahoma bench for arguing about the first — to regain a 32-27 lead.

Kansas nearly made it a two-possession game after the Sooners muffed the kickoff, but a holding penalty brought back Hishaw's 20-yard touchdown run and Seth Keller missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt.

Oklahoma took advantage of the missed opportunity. After it was forced to punt, the Sooners' defense got a hand on Bean's third-down pass and Billy Bowman picked it off at the Kansas 14. Gabriel scored less than 2 minutes, barreling into the end zone from a yard out, and the Sooners had a 33-32 lead with 5:22 to go.

The Jayhawks had one more touchdown in them.

Oklahoma visits Oklahoma State next Saturday in the last edition of Bedlam for the foreseeable future.

Kansas heads to Iowa State next Saturday.

 KU holds on to beat No. 6 Oklahoma 38-33

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard was 15-of-17 passing for 164 yards with two touchdowns as Kansas State defeated Houston 41-0 Saturday.

It was the K-State defense, which has gone nine quarters without allowing a touchdown, that shined the brightest. K-State has outscored its opponents 103-3 since falling behind Texas Tech 21-17 on Oct. 14 before winning 38-21.

“I feel like our confidence level is really high right now and it's coming at a good time,” Howard said. “The defense makes my job really easy. Those are two really good offenses (TCU and Houston) they just held to three points combined. When you have your defense playing like that, it's hard not to win games.”

The Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) held the Cougars (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) to just 208 yards. The Cougars came into the game second in the Big 12 with 291 passing yards per game but managed just 95 against K-State.

Houston's Donovan Smith had trouble finding open receivers. He finished the day 13 of 28 for 88 yards.

“We're playing at an elite level,” defensive end Nate Matlack said. “That's what we've been trying to replicate the whole season. It feels really good to be playing at this level, shutting guys out or holding them to one score. That's our goal for the rest of the season.”

K-State head coach Chris Klieman had trouble finding a unit to single out in his postgame praise.

“It was a dominant performance,” Klieman said. "We didn't want to be a roller-coaster team. We want to get better every week. Houston is a good team. Our guys really played focused, physical football.

"I can't say enough about our defense. We're playing really well at all three levels of defense, which I'm excited about.

“Will Howard has played a lot of really good football here, but I told him I thought he played his best game today.”

The Wildcats rushed for 174 yards, led by DJ Giddens, who had 96 yards and two of the three rushing touchdowns. His 13-yard run late in the third quarter extended the lead to 35-0.

Avery Johnson threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Seth Porter in the fourth quarter.

“We knew it would be challenging. It’s Big 12 football,” Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said. “I don’t think that’s who we are as a football team. Our opponent had a lot to do with that.

“That’s what Big 12 championship football looks like.”

K-State continued an impressive streak with a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on its opening possession. Through eight games, the Wildcats have scored six touchdowns and had one field goal the first time it touched the ball. Howard passed to Garrett Oakley for a 12-yard score.

Howard then found Phillip Brooks on a 21-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats up 14-0 early in the second quarter, capping a 15-play, 89-yard drive.

Treshaun Ward punched it in from the 1-yard line to give K-State a 21-0 lead. After another three-and-out, Giddens scored on a 9-yard run to put the Wildcats up 28-0 late in the half.

In the first half, the Wildcats held a 277-83 advantage in total yards. Howard was 13 of 14 for 155 yards and two scores.

Houston: The Cougars need to stop spotting their opponents a big lead. For the second straight week, they fell behind by at least 21 points in the first half.

Kansas State: There is no quarterback controversy in Manhattan, and not because Johnson isn't capable. Howard has firm control of the offense, and he can run and pass with efficiency.

Houston: The Cougars travel to take on in-state rival Baylor next Saturday.

Kansas State: The Wildcats play at No. 7 Texas next Saturday.

The touchdown was a 67-yard catch and run by&nbsp;Jacquante Pitts&nbsp;with 1:38 left in the first half.&nbsp;Nick Allsman&nbsp;scored KWU's first touchdown on a six-yard run early in the first quarter.&nbsp;Talon Cope&nbsp;had a 33-yard field early in the second quarter. Pitts finished with four receptions for 133 yards and fullback&nbsp;Artaveon Shavers&nbsp;five catches for 88 yards. Allsman had a team-best 47 yards rushing on 11 carries.

The Bluejays lost to Avila 35-17 last Saturday in Hillsboro. The loss ended a two-game winning streak – victories over Bethel (31-21) and Sterling (24-10). Tabor lost to Bethany 28-17 September 9 in Lindsborg

Sophomore William Green and freshman Tyson Dozhier have played quarterback. Green has completed 41.5 percent of his passes for 595 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions while Dozhier has completed 50.6 percent of his throws for 302 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions

Junior running back James Bolden is the primary offensive weapon with 641 yards rushing – 80.1 per game – and 13 receptions for 159 yards. He has scored three touchdowns, two receiving. Devin Jones in the leading receiver with 24 catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns

Senior linebacker Brooks Gardner, son of head coach Mike Gardner, has a team-best 75 tackles.

"We're not walking into this game thinking it's won. Coach Gardner does a great job over there and I know they'll be ready to go and ready to give us a test. We're going to have to come out hot and stay hot. Coach Gardner's offenses always do a good job running the ball. As long as we keep everything in front of us in the pass game, we'll be alright. And coach Gardner always has a couple of trick plays up his sleeve, when you play them you've got to be ready for anything. (Defensively) they use multiple fronts and move guys around. That will be a challenge for us this week."

The Coyotes travel to Ottawa for a 1 p.m. game Saturday against the Braves at Advent Health Field. It will be KWU's final road game of the regular season.

The Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Wichita Heights Falcons by a score of 27-18 on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium in the first round of the playoffs. 

Junction City set the tempo early, scoring on the opening possession of the game on a 10-yard touchdown run from Michael Boganowski. The Blue Jays never looked back and never trailed in the game despite Wichita Heights keeping the game close. 

The Blue Jays defense gave up three touchdowns on the night, two of them rushing and one of them through the air. Junction City stopped Heights on two different two-point conversion attempts. The Falcons also missed a PAT as well. 

The turning point in the game was late in the second quarter when Junction led 7-6, Brock Bazan punted the football away. As the ball was in the air, it hit a Heights player on the helmet. The Blue Jays recovered it and then scored on the next play, on a three yard touchdown run from Griffon Bohanon. 

Two other key plays in the game came on two long punt returns, one from Losiah Autry and the other from Boganowski, which both led to short fields and touchdowns for the Blue Jays. 

Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman expressed that his team played well, but there are still things to improve on if the Blue Jays want to make a deep run in the playoffs. "I am very, very pleased with the win," Zimmerman said. "I think our kids played really hard tonight."

Junction City improves to 6-3 on the season and will travel to Topeka next week to take on number one seed Washburn Rural in the second round of the playoffs.

The matchup between the Blue Jays and the Falcons is the eighth seed vs the nine seed in the class 6A west bracket. 

Junction City is coming off back-to-back 40-point victories over Topeka High and Emporia. As for Wichita Heights, they are entering the playoffs on back-to-back double-digit losses.

Wichita Heights has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs the past two seasons. As for Junction City, they have advanced past the first round of the playoffs every year since 2018.

These two teams have met eight times previously, and the series is an even 4-4 split.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior offensive lineman Cooper Beebe earned one of the most prestigious honors in major college football on Wednesday as he was selected as a member of the 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Class and is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.

Beebe is one of 16 finalists – including one of nine FBS players – that were trimmed from a record-number 201 semifinalists. The 16 finalists are now in contention for the 2023 William V. MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Coming off a game in which Kansas State rushed for 343 yards and produced 587 total yards of offense in a 41-3 victory over TCU, senior left guard&nbsp;Cooper Beebe&nbsp;has been named the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Tuesday.

It is the first time this year Beebe has earned a weekly national award as, for the first time, the FWAA is selecting an Outland Trophy National Player of the Week as part of the National College Football Awards Association weekly national honors from 12 awards. Following the UCF game earlier this season, running back&nbsp;DJ Giddens&nbsp;was named the Doak Walker Award National Running Back of the Week.

Beebe pushed his streak without allowing a sack to 36 games and 1,041 pass blocking plays, which dates back to the Iowa State contest in 2020 (according to Pro Football Focus). He made his 42nd&nbsp;career start against the Horned Frogs, including his 39th-straight start, the most by an active player on this year’s team. His 42 career starts are three shy of entering the top five among K-State offensive linemen since 1990.

JCHS unveils a new sports tunnel

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns, Travis Kelce caught 12 passes for 179 yards and a score, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 31-17 on Sunday to take command of the AFC West.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling had three catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco also caught TD passes, and the Chiefs (6-1) won their sixth straight to take a three-game lead in a division they have won seven straight years.

The Chiefs were leading 24-17 midway through the fourth quarter when Mecole Hardman, who returned to Kansas City this week in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-hardman-42f4f30cc2f8e73026636f408eabc3ed">a trade with the New York Jets</a>, brought back a punt 50 yards. That gave Kansas City a short field and, six plays later, Mahomes hit Pacheco out of the backfield for the touchdown that put the game away.

The Chargers' Justin Herbert, who spent the day under constant pressure from the league's No. 2 scoring defense, had 259 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. Joshua Palmer caught five passes for 133 yards and Joshua Kelley ran seven times for 75 yards and a score.

The Chiefs had been relying all season on their defense to bail out an offense that had struggled to hit its stride.

Mahomes and Co. finally found it in the first half.

After an opening drive that netted a field goal, the reigning league MVP capped three of the next four drives with TD passes. The first was a 46-yard strike to Valdes-Scantling, the second to Rice, and the final one — almost fittingly — a flip from the 1-yard line to Kelce, who bulldozed through a group of defenders and into the end zone with 15 seconds left in the first half.

That prompted big cheers from the home crowd, including Taylor Swift, who watched from a luxury suite and celebrated with&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1716198134270034307">a personalized handshake with Brittany Mahomes</a>, the QB's wife.

The score left Mahomes with 321 yards passing, the fourth time in his career that he had been over 300 yards before halftime. And it left Kelce with nine catches for 143 yards and a score.

It only left the Chiefs with a 24-17 lead, though, because the Chargers were getting some big plays of their own.

After the Chargers evened the score with a field goal of their own, Kelley got loose for a 49-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. And after Herbert connected with Palmer for 60 yards down the middle of the field, the Los Angeles quarterback found Gerald Everett in the end zone for a touchdown.

Given all the first-half offense, the second half was a dud. Both teams put together long drives in the third quarter, and both of them ended up with turnovers, leaving the Chiefs clinging to their 24-17 lead heading into the fourth.

Swift was again in attendance to watch Kelce and the Chiefs. She was seen wearing a friendship bracelet with “87” on it. Kelce's failed attempt to give her a friendship bracelet during her Eras Tour led to the tight end's courtship of the pop star, and an invitation to a game at Arrowhead Stadium. Swift took him up on it and they have been seeing each other ever since.

Chiefs pass rusher Charles Omenihu, who was suspended the first six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, made his debut in a big way. He had a sack in the first half and tipped a pass that L'Jarius Sneed picked off in the second.

Chargers: RB Austin Ekeler limped off in the first half but returned to the game. ... Everett left in the second with a quad injury.

Chiefs: LB Nick Bolton appeared to hurt his wrist tackling Allen midway through the fourth quarter.

Chargers: Play the Bears next Sunday night.

The Junction City Lady Jays finished second and the Blue Jay boys third in Class 6A Regional team competition in Wichita Saturday. Since they finished in the top three both teams have qualified for the 6A State Meet next Saturday ( Oct. 28 ) in Lawrence.

&nbsp; Lorna Rae Pierce finished second in the girls race in 18:10.94. Anna Fontaine finished in third-place. Ethan Fontaine led the boys with a time of 16:53.73 to finish seventh.&nbsp;&nbsp;

JCHS cross country shines at regionals

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Will Howard threw three touchdowns and Avery Johnson tossed a touchdown as well as Kansas State raced past TCU in a 41-3 victory during the program’s annual Harley Day at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Treshaun Ward also had 17 carries for 89 yards, while DJ Giddens rushed nine times for 85 yards and one touchdown for the Wildcats, 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12 Conference, who ran for 343 yards while outgaining the Horned Frogs 587-300 in a rematch from the 2022 Big 12 Championship Game.

“We executed at a very high level the entire game because we executed at a high level all week,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “It clicked tonight. I’m super excited for our players, coaches and fans because that’s a good football team. You guys know as well I do they’re a really good team. We were clicking on all cylinders.”

The victory marked the Wildcats’ first home game since a 44-31 win over UCF on September 23. A sellout crowd of 52,580 was on hand to witness the Wildcats third straight win over TCU in Manhattan and the largest margin of victory in the series since 1922.

“Hats off to our fans,” Klieman said. “It was unbelievably loud and impacted the game.”

The Coyotes are back home Saturday for a game against Kansas Conference and Bissell Division foe Saint Mary on Homecoming and Family Weekend. Kickoff is 5 p.m. on Bissell Field at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes have won the last five games against the Spires including a 39-13 victory last season in Leavenworth. KWU has outscored USM 277-30 in the five contests. The Coyotes have a 17-4 edge – 11-1 at home – since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes ran their winning streak to four with a 34-16 victory over Avila last Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. They led 20-10 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 14-6 in the second half.

Freshman&nbsp;Byron McNair&nbsp;made his first collegiate start and played well completing 11 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. The Coyotes totaled 250 yards rushing and were led by&nbsp;Tyler Boston&nbsp;with 119 yards and&nbsp;Nick Allsman&nbsp;with 80. Both scored a touchdown as did running back&nbsp;Mark Benjamin.&nbsp; Avila finished with 245 total yards but had a minus-one yard rushing on 22 attempts. KWU's allowing an averaging of 115.6 yards rushing per game.

 Coach&nbsp;Matt Myers&nbsp;said he would decide who will start at quarterback later in the week – McNair or&nbsp;Richard Lara. McNair came in for Lara in the second half of KWU's game against McPherson and has taken all the snaps since then.. KWU is the lone team in the Bissell Division with an overall winning record. Ottawa, Saint Mary and Tabor are next at 2-5.&nbsp;

The Spires lost to Ottawa 28-17 last Saturday in Leavenworth. It was their second consecutive loss and third in the last four games.. Saint Mary's games are typically entertaining with shootouts not uncommon. They defeated McPherson 36-32 and lost to Evangel 59-42. The Spires average 30.6 points but allow 40.3 points and 458 total yards that includes 265 rushing.&nbsp; Sophomore quarterback Erick Covington has thrown for 1,383 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 49 percent of his passes. Redshirt freshman Michael Gazzana is the top receiver with 36 receptions for 577 yards and six touchdowns. Davien Norman is next with 21 catches for 225 yards and three scores; Jartavious Martin has a team-best 396 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Defensive back Jaxon Curtis has a team-high 55 tackles and shares the lead in interceptions with three along with Landon Beecham.

"(McNair's) athletic ability has shown through and also his decision making. When a play breaks down, he can make plays which has been super important. I think the guys have bought in an believe in his skill set. We believe in all of our quarterbacks but he's the one that's performing the best at the moment."I expect (Saint Mary) to challenge us on defense and come and play super hard. We can't just come out and do the coin flip and go home. We need to make sure we start hot. Their RPO game is something that we haven't really seen thus far. It's multi-faceted, their quarterback is making really good decisions and feeding off of their run game."Everyone's ready to go and excited to be back home for Homecoming."

🏈 2023 KSHSAA Playoff Brackets are set

The Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Emporia Spartans 57-14 on senior night at Blue Jay Stadium on Friday night in Junction City. Junction City improves to 5-3 on the year with the win.&nbsp;

The Blue Jay defense forced a quick three-and-out, and the offense wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. MC Taylor scored on a 18-yard touchdown run to begin the night for Junction City. The first of eight touchdowns on the night for the Blue Jay offense.&nbsp;

Senior quarterback Brock Bazan had a nice game in his last regular season game at Blue Jay Stadium. Bazan had two passing touchdowns on the night, one to Losiah Autry, and the other to Cooper Bogenhagen. Other touchdown scorers on the night for the Blue Jays included Griffon Bohanon, Malaki Daniels (twice), and sophomore Lance Norris.&nbsp;

"I am very pleased with our second half performance, and for the most part the first half as well," Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman said.&nbsp;

Playoffs begin next week all across the state of Kansas. Junction City is expected to have a home game in the first round.&nbsp;

High School Football week eight matchups

Junction City senior Michael Boganowski is headed to the University of Oklahoma and will play college football for the Sooners next fall.

Boganowski, the number one ranked player in Kansas and a four-star recruit according to rivals.com, announced his decision on Thursday night at Junction City High School in front of a large crowd.

Boganowski said a big factor in his decision is because of Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables and the winning reputation that he has. "The first visit I took to Oklahoma coach Venables took me through his whole coaching journey and what he did at each school. He said, I did it at every other school and it's going to happen here at Oklahoma. Seeing how this season has played out, just that happened.  It is something that I want to be a part of. " 

Boganowski will finish his senior year at Junction City High School and then head to Oklahoma next summer.&nbsp;

The Junction City Blue Jay football team will return to Blue Jay Stadium on Friday night for their final home game of the regular season. The Blue Jays host the Emporia Spartans on Friday night, which is also senior night at Junction City High School.

Junction City is coming off their biggest victory of the season, defeating Topeka High 47-0 in a game where the Blue Jays did not punt the football. Both offense and defense played sharp against the Trojans last week. As for Emporia, they have struggled this season. The Spartans have not won a game this season. They are coming off a 46-0 loss to Washburn Rural.

Despite the record, these two teams always battle against each other. “This is a team we can never overlook,” Junction City head football coach Randall Zimmerman said. “They’ve got so much pride in that school and in the community, and their kids are very prideful too. They have always been an incredibly tough out for us.”

The seniors will be honored before kickoff on Friday night. When talking about the senior class, coach Zimmerman made it clear he is very proud of them. “We have great kids,” Zimmerman said. “ Our mission in this program to build champions for life.”
