TOPEKA&nbsp; – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt Thursday provided updated guidance to law enforcement agencies and county prosecutors statewide on the enforcement of emergency orders, following the passage of House Bill 2016 last month and the issuance of Executive Order 20-52 requiring Kansas residents to wear a mask in public spaces.

The guidance, in the form of a memorandum, updates previous guidance provided by the attorney general on March 24, April 8 and May 28. The memo reflects changes to the Kansas Emergency Management Act adopted by the Kansas Legislature on June 4, and signed into law by the governor on June 8. Those amendments included changing the violation of an emergency order issued by the governor from a Class A misdemeanor to a civil violation, which may be enforced by a lawsuit filed by the county or district attorney. As such, law enforcement officers may no longer arrest or detain individuals for violations of an emergency order.

Additionally, Schmidt noted in the memo that under House Bill 2016, individual counties may elect to adopt provisions that are “less stringent” than a governor’s order. If an individual county has done so, then the governor’s emergency order may not be enforced in that county, even by a civil lawsuit.

The new law also authorizes the attorney general to bring enforcement actions.

“The attorney general’s office will defer to the decisions of local county and district attorneys and has no plans to bring our own enforcement actions simply for not wearing a mask,” Schmidt said. “I think the better approach is to leave any enforcement to local authorities who know their communities best and to give Kansans information and encouragement and trust them to make wise decisions. 

So here’s what I encourage: Be safe on this Independence Day weekend, use common sense and caution to keep yourself and others healthy, heed the advice of the CDC and other public health experts, and wear a mask for now whenever you’re in a public setting and cannot maintain a safe distance from other people.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A 21-year-old Kansas man arrested in connection with a June 18, shooting in Wichita has made his first court appearance in the case Tuesday.

Larry Triplett of Wichita was arrested without incident with the assistance of Kansas Highway Patrol during a vehicle stop on the Kansas Turnpike near Cassoday, according to officer Kevin Wheeler. He is charged with aggravated battery, great bodily harm, aggravated robbery, criminal discharge of a firearm, failure to comply and remains jailed on a bond of $750,000, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

During the investigation, police determined the 19-year-old and a friend were in the small parking area on the north side of The Keeper of the Plains when a disturbance occurred with a male suspect, according to Davidson.&nbsp;

The suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots which struck the victim and also a vehicle owned by the victim's friend.

The victim also reported the suspect took property from him and then fled with other individuals who were in the area.&nbsp; During the investigation, police also recovered multiple shell casings.

Authorities do not believe this is a random incident, according to Davidson.

Suspect charged in shooting, robbery near Wichita attraction

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp;an internal theft that included guns, drugs and $145,000 in cash at the Sedgwick County Property and Evidence storage site have made a second arrest.

On Wednesday, Marc Gordon, the former Property and Evidence Technician, was booked in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on a warrant for Felony Official Misconduct and 3 counts of Misdemeanor Theft, according to sheriff's Lt. Tim Myers.

On June 26, Robert White, the former Property and Evidence Supervisor, was booked in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility for Distribution of Cocaine, Felony Official Misconduct, 2 counts of Felony Theft, 3 counts of Misdemeanor Theft, and 10 counts of Possession with Intent, according to Myers.

On January 24, an administrative investigation was initiated on a Gordon for not following proper procedures and policy violations. He was then suspended from work on February 3.

On February 5, White, the Property and Evidence Supervisor was reassigned to another function of the Sheriff’s Office. On February 26, the investigation turned from an administrative investigation to a criminal investigation. As of February 27, both of White and&nbsp; are no longer employed by the Sheriff’s Office.

While conducting an internal audit, evidence was found to be missing and it was discovered that items set for destruction were missing. The time line stretches of effected cases goes back several years.&nbsp;

Since February 26, sheriff's department investigators have been trying to identify any and all evidence that has been stolen and auditing evidence that is still in our possession. During this same time frame the criminal investigation has been progressing. Over 50,000 pieces of evidence are stored in Property and Evidence. Currently, we know that approximately $145,000 in money, drugs, seven guns, and power tools were stolen. One of the stolen guns has been recovered.

Authorities do not anticipate any other arrests in connection to the investigation at Property and Evidence, according to Myers.

2nd Kan. jail employee accused of theft from property, evidence site

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two brothers on multiple requested drug charges following a three-week investigation.

On June 26, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), with the assistance of sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers executed a search warrant in the 200 block of East Sixth Street in Solomon, according to Dickinson County Sheriff Gareth Hoffman.

Deputies arrested Ethan Swarts, 18, and Alec Swarts, 23, and recovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, ammunition, and a firearm.

Ethan Swarts was jailed on requested charges of Possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school Felony possession of drug paraphernalia No drug tax stamp, Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and Criminal use of weapons, according to Hoffman.

Drug Task Force arrests Kan. brothers following 3 week investigation

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting on Monday in Wichita and have identified the victim as&nbsp;25-year-old Joshua Steele of Wichita.

Just after 5 a.m. Monday, police&nbsp; responded to a shooting call at a home in the 6900 block of East Ayesbury Circle in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stephens

&nbsp;Upon arrival, they located Steele, who was injured and unresponsive from a gunshot wound, according to Stephens. Medical personnel responded to the scene and despite their efforts, Steele was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation revealed that Steele and his girlfriend were at the home of a friend on Ayesbury. Two men arrived at the home, and a disturbance ensued concerning property. During the disturbance, multiple shots were fired, striking Steele.

The two suspects then fled the scene in a moving style truck.

This was not a random incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

Upon arrival, officers located the victim with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation revealed the victim and his girlfriend were at the home of a friend on Ayesbury. Two other men arrived at the home, and a disturbance ensued outside between the 25-year-old victim, his girlfriend, and the two suspects. 

During the disturbance, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fired multiple times, striking the victim.

The two suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police have not released the victim's name or reported an arrest.

The death was Wichita's 27th homicide of the year, according to Stephens.

Update: Kan. man dead after disturbance with girlfriend, 2 suspects

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on theft charges after a traffic stop in Kansas.

Just before 6a.m., Monday a sheriff's deputy stopped a Ford Ranger pickup truck pulling a trailer in the 2600 block ofNE Calhoun Bluff Road, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 The trailer was recently reported stolen out of Jefferson County. Deputies conducted a felony car stop and with the assistance of a Sheriff’s Office K9, arrested Travis D. Walker, 39, of Topeka and booked him into the Jefferson County Jail on requested felony theft charges.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said the quick communication from Jefferson County led to the recovery of a stolen trailer and the arrest of the suspect.

Sheriff's K9 helps Kan. deputies recover stolen trailer

MARION COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects jailed after a standoff in Marion.

Just before 6p.m. Sunday, police observed suspicious activity in the 500 block of north Cedar in Marion, according to Police Chief&nbsp;Clinton Jeffrey.

After watching the individuals, officers attempted to make contact. The individuals later identified as 36-year-old Matthew Bice and 38-year-old Julie Starks both of Marion, Ohio, went into the residence. 

A vehicle located at the property was determined to have been stolen out of Arizona.

Officers spoke with the property owner outside the residence. The property owner cooperated and confirmed the identity of the individuals. 

The property owner did not want them at the residence and was concerned for her safety if they were to remain. Police also learned Bice and Starks had numerous felony warrants, according to Jeffrey.

Officers attempted to get Bice and Starks to come out of the residence but were unsuccessful. Through information gathered it was determined that the Bice and Starks may have a firearm. 

With the safety of the public, the suspects in the residence and the officers on scene in mind, authorities decided to contact the Harvey County Emergency Response Team.

Just after 8p.m., the Harvey County ERT arrived.&nbsp; After several hours of attempting to contact the suspects to come out of the residence a team of officers entered the residence and took the suspects into custody without incident.

&nbsp;Bice is being held on requested local charges of felony possession of stolen property and felony interference with law enforcement.&nbsp; Bice was also arrested for outstanding felony warrants out of Harvey County, Kansas as well as Springfield, Missouri.

Starks is being held on requested local charges of felony interference with law enforcement. Starks was also arrested on outstanding felony warrants from Marion County and Harvey County.

 </figure>MARION COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects jailed after a standoff in Marion.Just before 6p.m. Sunday, police observed suspicious activity in the 500 block of north Cedar in Marion, according to Police Chief&nbsp;Clinton Jeffrey.After watching the individuals, officers attempted to make contact. The individuals later identified as 36-year-old Matthew Bice and 38-year-old Julie Starks both of Marion, Ohio, went into the residence. A vehicle located at the property was determined to have been stolen out of Arizona.Officers spoke with the property owner outside the residence. The property owner cooperated and confirmed the identity of the individuals. The property owner did not want them at the residence and was concerned for her safety if they were to remain. Police also learned Bice and Starks had numerous felony warrants, according to Jeffrey.Officers attempted to get Bice and Starks to come out of the residence but were unsuccessful. Through information gathered it was determined that the Bice and Starks may have a firearm. With the safety of the public, the suspects in the residence and the officers on scene in mind, authorities decided to contact the Harvey County Emergency Response Team.Just after 8p.m., the Harvey County ERT arrived.&nbsp; After several hours of attempting to contact the suspects to come out of the residence a team of officers entered the residence and took the suspects into custody without incident.<figure>

Couple from Ohio arrested after standoff at Kan. home

LAWRENCE —The police in Lawrence and the Douglas County Sheriff's office on Monday afternoon asked citizens protesting near 13th and Massachusetts Street to move to an alternate location so that the road can reopen for travel and commerce, according to police spokesman Patrick Compton.

Officers attempted to relocate the assembly out of the roadway and to a safer location. Law enforcement's goal was to ensure commerce and safety, reinstate public access to civil service buildings, while still allowing the demonstrators to assemble. The Chief of Police made the decision to place barricades between E. North Park and E. South Park Streets. This was done to provide a proper barrier between traffic and the assembly, providing a space in which citizens can peacefully gather, and the City can still function, according to Compton. The Chief Police also encouraged protesters to seek a Right of Way Permit with the City of Lawrence. During this action, police issued three notices to appear and arrested six individuals for violating K.S.A. 8-1503.

Police were also&nbsp; investigating two incidents of vehicles driving on Mass Street during the assembly. One occurred just before 2 p.m., and the second just before 4 p.m. At this time, we have no reports of injuries.

"We acknowledge and appreciate the right of our citizens to assemble peacefully. However, we are asking those individuals currently on Massachusetts Street to do so in a safer location out of the roadway.

Should individuals refuse to relocate to an alternate location, they will be issued a notice to appear under K.S.A. 8-1503, and active refusal will result in arrest.

The City's Municipal Services and Operations will then assist with the cleanup of Massachusetts Street so it can reopen to normal traffic patterns."

Update: Cars drive through protest, 6 arrested in downtown Lawrence

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a chase on bicycle.

Just before 8a.m. Friday, police saw Alec Somrak, 29, of Salina, riding a bicycle in the 200 block of South Ninth Street, according to Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Officers knew that Somrak, a convicted felon, had an active warrant from Saline County District Court for failure to appear.&nbsp;

The officer attempted to stop Somrak, who continued riding his bike.

After multiple turns, Somrak and the officer ended up at the intersection of South Ninth Street and West South Street.&nbsp;

Then the officer began chasing Somrak on foot to&nbsp; apartments in the 200 block of South 12th Street, where Somrak was taken into custody, Forrester said.

In addition to the warrant, Somrak was arrested on the requested charge of felony interference with a law enforcement.

Police: Wanted Kansas felon captured after chase on bicycle

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Saturday, police responded to a shooting at Lincoln and Broadway, according to officer Keven Wheeler.&nbsp;

 As officers responded, they learned that a shooting patient arrived at a local hospital.&nbsp; Officers contacted a 32-year-old man who was treated and released with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his torso.&nbsp;

The investigation revealed that the 32-year-old was at a bar in the 1000 block of S. Broadway.&nbsp; As he and a 33-year-old woman were leaving the business, he was shot once by an unknown suspect causing his injury.&nbsp; A 35-year-old acquaintance transported the 32-year-old and the 33-year-old to the hospital in his vehicle.&nbsp;

Minutes before the shooting call, officers also responded to a suspicious character with shots fired at Topeka and Morris in&nbsp; Wichita.&nbsp; Officers learned that an unknown suspect was seen firing shots from a church parking lot.

Police have not released additional details or reported an arrest.

Police investigate shooting from Kansas church parking lot

SHAWNEE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; an aggravated assault that sent one man to the hospital.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to a call in the 2300 block of SW Buchanan in Topeka, according to Lt. Ron Ekis. 

The investigation revealed several individuals were involved in a disturbance in which on man had been struck by a machete requiring medical attention. 

During this disturbance, an unknown person fired gunshots striking a car at the same location. No persons were injured from the gunfire.

A private vehicle transported the man who was struck with the machete to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury. 

Police released no additional details Sunday and have not reported an arrest.

Kansas man hospitalized after struck with machete

HAMILTON COUNTY–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office continue their search for two suspects in connection with the Friday June 19 homicide of 21-year-old Kevin Palma-Rodriguez of Syracuse.

Just before noon that day, authorities in Hamilton County received a 911 call reporting a shooting in Syracuse, according to a media release from the KBI.

 When deputies arrived at the Country Café apartments at 503 E. Ave. A, Apt. 9, they discovered a man inside the apartment who had died from gunshot wounds. The coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene.

He was later identified as Palma-Rodriguez.

A search warrant was conducted by the KBI High Risk Warrant Team at a residence at&nbsp;310 W. Hwy 50, Apt. 9, in&nbsp;Syracuse. Then, an arrest warrant was issued for first-degree murder for 25-year-old Amner Y. Tejada-Vigil, also known as Jeovany Vijil. He lives at the Syracuse residence where the search warrant was conducted. 

On June 22, authorities issued a second arrest warrant for Ismael Gomez-Carvajal, 43, of Syracuse, who is wanted for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and criminal solicitation. 

Gomez-Carvajal and Amner Tejada-Vigil may be driving a purple or blue 2007 Chevrolet Equinox bearing Kansas tag 513MMN.

 </figure>The investigation revealed the 19-year-old and a friend were in the small parking area on the north side of The Keeper of the Plains parking lot in Wichita when a disturbance ensued with a suspect identified as&nbsp;21-year-old Larry Triplett, III of Wichita.Triplett pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking the victim and a silver Chrysler 200 vehicle belonging to the victim’s friend.&nbsp; Triplett then took property from the victim and fled with the other individuals.Late Thursday, Triplet was arrested without incident with the assistance of Kansas Highway Patrol during a vehicle stop on the Kansas Turnpike near Cassoday, according to officer Kevin Wheeler. 21-year-old shooting suspect captured during Kan. Turnpike traffic stop

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Jackson County Executive Frank White plans to ask county officials to remove statues of Andrew Jackson that stand in front of two county courthouses.

White issued a statement about the statues late Thursday, shortly after two men were arrested when the Jackson statue in front of the county courthouse in Kansas City was vandalized.

The statue was spray-painted with expletives and the words “Slave Owner.” The vandalism comes as statues of historic figures have been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/810a6cb13ce6cdbde5b534661c5f2da6">defaced and torn down&nbsp;</a>across the country during demonstrations against racial injustice.

People who come to the courthouses in Kansas City and Independence are greeted by statues honoring a man who was a slave owner, opposed abolishing slavery and forced thousands of Native Americans off their land so white settlers could move in, White said.

“As long as these statues remain, our words about fairness, justice and equality will continue to ring hollow for many we serve,” White said.

White plans to ask the Jackson County Legislature to form a committee and hold public hearings to discuss removing the statues.

“I welcome the opportunity to work with the Legislature and fellow elected officials to find a better home for these statues where their history can be put into the appropriate context for us to learn from, but I am convinced that home is not in front of our courthouses,” White said.

Just before 6p.m. Friday, the Hutchison Police Department Special Operations Unit, Reno County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit and South Hutchinson Police Department a search warrant on West Bigger Street in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

Officers seized 44 balloons with each balloon containing .5 grams black tar heroin, 14 Oxycodone 30mg pills, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

They arrested Randall J. Sipes, 51, Hutchinson was arrested on requested charges of&nbsp; Possession of Heroin w/ intent to distribute, Possession of Oxycodone w/ intent to distribute, Possession of Paraphernalia w/ intent to distribute, Possession of methamphetamine and Possession of paraphernalia.

Police find balloons with black tar heroin during Kan. drug bust

SALINE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects from Indiana after a wild chase in Saline County.

Just before 3a.m. Friday, a deputy sheriff noticed a 2020 Dodge Charger with no tag in the 500 block of N. 9th Street in Salina and attempted to make a traffic stop, according Sheriff Roger&nbsp; Soldan.&nbsp;

The driver later identified as Destinee Milton-Mata, 23, Gary, Indiana., in the&nbsp; Dodge ignored the deputy, traveled north on 9th Street&nbsp; and entered Interstate 70 at speeds of 100 mph.

The chase continued traveling in both directions on Interstate 70, Interstate 135, Crawford Street,&nbsp; State Street and on Halstead Road where&nbsp; the driver turned around and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes toward deputies who swerved to avoid a crash.

After returning to northbound Interstate 135, the Dodge traveled over a spike strip left by Salina Police.&nbsp; However, the pull rope on the strip broke and the officer was unable to retrieve the spikes before two sheriff's vehicles and a motorist's vehicle drove over them, causing multiple tire punctures, according to Soldan&nbsp; No one was injured, he added.

The chase continued north onto U.S. 81 when the Dodge exited to Kansas 143 Highway and turned west on to a gravel road where it crashed, according to Soldan.

Milton-Mata and a passenger identified as 23-year-old Stefano Childress, 31, Hammond Indiana, fled on foot. Deputies located them hiding in a field. Deputies learned the car was reported stolen in Illinois.

&nbsp;Childress, who has a prior felony conviction in Indiana is being held on requested charges of Obstruction and Possession of stolen property, according to Soldan.

Milton-Mata is being held on requested charges that include a&nbsp;registration violation, Felony flee and elude, Aggravated assault on an law enforcement officer, Obstruction, Transporting an open container, Driving while suspended and Possession of stolen property

 </figure>SALINE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects from Indiana after a wild chase in Saline County.Just before 3a.m. Friday, a deputy sheriff noticed a 2020 Dodge Charger with no tag in the 500 block of N. 9th Street in Salina and attempted to make a traffic stop, according Sheriff Roger&nbsp; Soldan.&nbsp;The driver later identified as Destinee Milton-Mata, 23, Gary, Indiana., in the&nbsp; Dodge ignored the deputy, traveled north on 9th Street&nbsp; and entered Interstate 70 at speeds of 100 mph.The chase continued traveling in both directions on Interstate 70, Interstate 135, Crawford Street,&nbsp; State Street and on Halstead Road where&nbsp; the driver turned around and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes toward deputies who swerved to avoid a crash.After returning to northbound Interstate 135, the Dodge traveled over a spike strip left by Salina Police.&nbsp; However, the pull rope on the strip broke and the officer was unable to retrieve the spikes before two sheriff's vehicles and a motorist's vehicle drove over them, causing multiple tire punctures, according to Soldan&nbsp; No one was injured, he added.The chase continued north onto U.S. 81 when the Dodge exited to Kansas 143 Highway and turned west on to a gravel road where it crashed, according to Soldan.Milton-Mata and a passenger identified as 23-year-old Stefano Childress, 31, Hammond Indiana, fled on foot. Deputies located them hiding in a field. Deputies learned the car was reported stolen in Illinois.&nbsp;Childress, who has a prior felony conviction in Indiana is being held on requested charges of Obstruction and Possession of stolen property, according to Soldan.Milton-Mata is being held on requested charges that include a&nbsp;registration violation, Felony flee and elude, Aggravated assault on an law enforcement officer, Obstruction, Transporting an open container, Driving while suspended and Possession of stolen property

Sheriff: Suspects arrested after spike strip incident on Kansas highway

BARTON COUNTY—John Paul Zapata, who was wanted for aggravated escape from custody has been captured, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

 Zapata had been released on a furlough by order of the District Court. He failed to return at the appointed time.

Through various investigative techniques, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office detectives were able to locate him in Raymond, Kansas. The Rice County Sheriff’s office was notified, and a search warrant was obtained for a residence in Raymond. 

Just after 3p.m. Friday,&nbsp; Zapata was located and taken into custody.

He was returned to the Barton County Jail and faces additional charges of aggravated escape.

On March 4, 2020 and again on May 8, 2020 the Barton County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at 260 N. Washington just north of the city of Great Bend. During the April 8 incident the Sheriff’s Office was forced to use tear gas to dislodge a subject from the residence, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The search warrants resulted in the arrest of John Paul Zapata, 34 of Great Bend. Zapata was being held in the Barton County Jail awaiting trial.

Zapata entered into a plea agreement with the court sentencing him to the Department of Corrections. Part of that plea agreement ordered the Sheriff’s Office to release Zapata on furlough “for the express purpose to get his affairs in order before being sentenced to Kansas Department of Corrections”. 

The Sheriff’s Office did not have input as to the plea agreement, according to Bellendir.

Zapata was released at 10 AM Monday as ordered by the court. The order stated Zapata was to return on June 24 at 10a.m.

 He has failed to do so. He is now wanted for aggravated escape from custody.

The Sheriff’s office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating him. Zapata has a history of resisting arrest and has been known to have firearms in his possession.

Sheriff: Deputies arrest Kan. man wanted for escape from custody

BARTON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged drug distribution.

On Thursday, Sheriff’s deputies and detectives executed a search warrant at 161 SW. 10th Avenue just south of the city of Great Bend, according to sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Sheriff’s Office detectives had been working a distribution case; sales of methamphetamine were suspected at that location. 

Just after 7 AM Sheriff’s deputies made entry into the residence. Officers discovered numerous firearms, methamphetamine and evidence of distribution of drugs.

Arrested at the scene was Rick Novotny age 62 of Great Bend. Novotny was booked on charges of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and criminal possession of a firearm. He was being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond. 

He has since posted bond and been released, according to Bellendir.

Deputies bust alleged drug dealer near Great Bend

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Police in Kansas City have arrested two men suspected of vandalizing a downtown statue of Andrew Jackson during a protest.

Officers were called to the Jackson County Courthouse around 5:30 p.m. for a report of people defacing the statue that stands outside the steps of the courthouse, police said. Jackson County is named for the 19th century U.S. president.

The statue had been spray-painted with expletives and the words “Slave Owner,” and police said responding officers saw the two men they believed were responsible from a distance. Police did not give the names of the men arrested, but said both men were 25.

The defacing of the Kansas City statue comes as protesters across the nation have defaced and torn down statues of historic figures during recent demonstrations against racial injustice.

Following the incident, Jackson County Executive Frank White issued a written statement calling for the removal of the Jackson statue, as well as an identical one that stands outside the courthouse in Independence.

Kansas City police arrest 2 for Andrew Jackson statue damage

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting and have five suspects in custody.

Just after 8p.m. Thursday, police responded to a disturbance with weapons at Kellogg and Hoover in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

At the scene, a 36-year-old man and 32-year-old woman reported to police they were shot at while driving westbound in their pickup on Kellogg. The suspects were driving a silver Ford Escape and began following them, pulled along side them and pointed a gun, according to Davidson.

After the gunshots, the victims told police they saw the suspect vehicle parked in the 5700 Block of West Kellogg. Police responded to that location and located&nbsp;20-year-old Neosha Allen,&nbsp;21-year-old Nicholas Aldridge and&nbsp;37-year-old Bruce Mabry in a motel room.

They also found&nbsp;37-year-old Samuel Camacho and another 20-year-old passenger in the motel parking lot.&nbsp; A short time later, officers found&nbsp;24-year-old Micahel Simrell in a parking lot nearby and arrested him after a short foot pursuit.

The victim's truck was struck once by gunfire, according to Davidson but there were no injuries.

Allen is being held on requested charges of aggravated assault. Aldridge is being held on requested charges of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery involving a separate case , according to Davidson.

&nbsp;Simrell is jailed on requested charges of aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm and an aggravated weapons violation.

Camacho is jailed on a requested charges of aggravated assault and criminal possession of a firearm

&nbsp;Bruce Mabry is jailed on a Kansas Dept. of Corrections Warrant, according to Davidson.&nbsp; Police are still working to determine what prompted the shooting.

WASHINGTON (AP)—The United States Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the Trump administration can deport some people seeking asylum without allowing them to make their case to a federal judge.

The court's 7-2 ruling applies to people who fail their initial asylum screenings, making them eligible for quick deportation, or expedited removal.

The justices&nbsp;ruled in the case of a man who said he fled persecution as a member of Sri Lanka's Tamil minority, but failed to persuade immigration officials that he faced harm if he returned to Sri Lanka. The man was arrested soon after he slipped across the US border from Mexico.&nbsp;

The high court reversed a lower court ruling in favour of the man, Vijayakumar Thuraissigiam, who was placed in expedited removal proceedings that prohibit people who fail initial interviews from asking federal courts for much help.

Since 2004, immigration officials have targeted for quick deportation undocumented immigrants who are picked up within 100 miles (160km) of the US border and within 14 days of entering the country. The Trump administration is seeking to expand that authority so that people detained anywhere in the US and up to two years after they got here could be quickly deported.&nbsp;
