SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have made an arrest.

Just after 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a drive-by shooting call in the 1400 block of North Poplar in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

At the approximate same time, a police Sergeant working off duty at Wesley Medical Center advised of a walk-in shooting at the hospital.

A 31-year-old woman arrived at the hospital with a minor graze wound to the top of her head.&nbsp; 

A man identified as 30-year-old Denoveous Adams of Wichita, brought her to the hospital in a Jeep Liberty, according to Davidson.

When Adams saw the police Sergeant, he grabbed a handgun from the Jeep and fled on foot.&nbsp; Officers arriving in the area arrested Adams and also recovered the gun.

During the investigation, officers located multiple shell casings in the 1400 block and 1600 block of North Poplar.&nbsp;

Investigators are also working to determine the circumstances of what occurred.&nbsp; A lack of all cooperation in this investigation has affected investigators from learning all the details of this case.&nbsp; 

&nbsp;Adams is being held for possession of a firearm by a felon. He has previously been arrested and convicted of charges that include aggravated robbery and robbery.

This was not a random incident, according to Davidson.

Police: Kan. felon brought shooting victim to hospital

SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. (AP) — A Shawnee Mission elementary teacher has been charged with a child sex crime, authorities in northeastern Kansas said.

Kim Zier, 63, who worked as a fifth-grade teacher at Pawnee Elementary School before being placed on leave, is charged in Johnson County District Court with one count of aggravated indecent liberties involving a child.

Investigators said he is accused of lewdly fondling or touching a child under the age of 14 on Jan. 28. Zier was arrested Monday and charged the same day. A bond reduction motion filed by Zier’s attorney said Zier has been a teacher for 41 years, serving 31 of those years with the Shawnee Mission School District.

School district spokesman David Smith confirmed that Zier had been placed on administrative leave.

“We take student safety very seriously, and have fully cooperated with the police in their investigation,” Smith said in an email.

Zier is scheduled to appear in court again April 22.

63-year-old Kan. teacher charged with child sex crime

Deputies also located a stolen 2006 Chevy Pickup at the residence along with a stolen John Deere tractor that was recovered at a separate location in the county.&nbsp; The John Deere tractor and Chevy Pickup were reported stolen out of Jefferson County.

&nbsp;Walker was booked into the Jefferson County Department of Corrections for Aggravated Burglary with several Shawnee County charges pending.

Sheriff: Kan. man stole John Deere tractor, motorcycles

A suspect in a string of business burglaries in Hays was apprehended Wednesday in Russell after a tip from the community following a weeks-long search for information.

The HPD first asked for the public's assistance to identify the suspect on March 23, following a string of break-ins on March 19.

"We received multiple tips from the community," said HPD chief Don Schiebler. "And we are grateful for all of them."

By using information received, he said they eliminated a number of suspects, with one tip leading to an arrest.

After obtaining a search warrant Tuesday, the HPD, with the assistance of the Russell Police Department and the Russell County Sheriff's Office, conducted a search at a home in Russell.

Robin Robert Galyardt, 67, Russell, was arrested on suspicion of three counts of burglary and two counts of attempted burglary, Scheibler said.

All five alleged crimes occurred in Hays.

Galyardt has four previous convictions for burglary as well as one conviction for aggravated burglary and possession of burglary tools dating back to 1990, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

"Detective J.B. Burkholder took the lead on this and he and the entire investigation unit worked really hard to try to get this suspect identified," Scheibler said. "I appreciate their hard work and also appreciate the tips that came in from the community."

Suspect in string of Kansas business burglaries apprehended

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) —&nbsp;A&nbsp;Missouri&nbsp;man who investigators say was planning to bomb a&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;City-area hospital was distressed by the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis and motivated by racial, religious and anti-government animus, according to newly unsealed court documents.

Timothy Wilson, 36, of Raymore, died March 24 in a firefight with FBI agents serving a probable cause arrest warrant on a Belton street. The plot was reminiscent of the 1995 bombing of a federal building in&nbsp;Oklahoma&nbsp;City. Wilson first talked of plans for an attack in April or June, but FBI agents say he moved up that timeline as the coronavirus made its way to Missouri.

The violent take-down followed a long-running domestic terrorism investigation that began in 2019 with Wilson’s encrypted communications about bomb-building with Jarrett William Smith, a 24-year-old an Army infantry soldier who faces prison for distributing bomb-making information through social media.

Among details in court records unsealed last week was that Wilson considered attacking the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, before settling on a plan to park a vehicle loaded with explosives and detonate it in the parking lot of Belton Regional Medical Center in Cass County.

Just two days before his death, Wilson and an undercover FBI agent visited Belton Regional to inspect the hospital property and conduct a dry run of their plot, court records say.

The records show that for months, Wilson had discussed ideas for a terrorist attack, telling an undercover FBI agent that he was considering sites ranging from a nuclear plant and Islamic centers in Missouri to the Walmart headquarters or a synagogue in&nbsp;Arkansas. He also discussed last year shooting up a predominantly black elementary school, the FBI said in the affidavits.

Agents said that in January, Wilson started buying “explosive precursors” to a bomb, including nitrogen, ammonium nitrate and another type of fertilizer that can be combined to make a bomb.

First, on Jan. 30, Wilson bought two 5-pound (2.3 kilogram) bags of urea, a nitrate commonly used in improvised explosive devices. The following day, Wilson bought a combined 60 pounds of ammonium nitrate and another type of fertilizer that, when combined, could be used to develop an explosive device.

Ammonium nitrate was a main ingredient Timothy McVeigh used blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, that killed 168 people. The 25th anniversary of the attack is being marked this weekend.

Smith, Wilson’s contact on bomb-making, was a private first class stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. He admitted during a court hearing in February to providing information about explosives to an FBI undercover agent and signed a formal plea agreement with prosecutors in court. He faces up to 40 years in prison when he’s sentenced later this year.

FBI: Government's response to virus spurred would-be bomber

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a burglary report at Tom Sawyer Bicycle Shop located in the 1900 block&nbsp;of South Broadway in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson. Surveillance video showed the suspect later identified as 20-year-old Christopher Brody Edward Steele, Jr. breaking into the business with a pipe wrench and stealing a BMX bike.

Just after noon, an officer spotted Steele on a bicycle in the 800 block of South Broadway. 

Steele matched the suspect seen in the surveillance video, and the bicycle was the same as well. When the officer attempted to contact Steele, he fled on the bike and ran into a house in the 1000 block of South Main. Steele attempted to run out the back door of the house but was arrested.

The bicycle was recovered inside of the residence.&nbsp;Steele remains jailed on requested charges of burglary, theft, and obstruct.

Surveillance video helps police catch Kan. burglary suspect

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged sex crimes.

Just after 9:00 p.m. Saturday police responded to an indecent liberties report at a residence in the 2100 block of North Jackson in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Through the investigation, officers learned that the a suspect identified as 46-year-old Jose Luis Garcia-Gomez inappropriately touched a teenage victim while at the residence.

Police arrested Garcia-Gomez at the residence and booked him for one count of aggravated indecent liberties, according to Davidson.

The investigation is ongoing and the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Kan. man accused of sex crime with teen victim

TOPEKA, KS – Lena, a 38 year old Bornean orangutan, passed away at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center Monday. She became ill last Wednesday, according to a media release from the center.

With her condition not improving, zoo staff planned to do a full medical workup on Lena on Monday. At about 10:30 and under anesthesia, she was transported to the zoo’s animal hospital. While the zoo’s medical team was taking radiographs, Lena went into cardiac arrest. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Lena was born at the Buffalo Zoo on April 2, 1982. She came to the Topeka Zoo from the Columbus Zoo in 2005. It was at the Topeka Zoo where she really flourished. She enjoyed interacting with people.

 If you were ever at the Zoo and had a kiss blown to you by an orangutan, that was Lena. “Lena had a way of working her way right into your heart,” said Zoo Director Brendan Wiley. 

Cris Sandberg, one of Lena’s Zoo Keepers, said, “She was special. I will always remember the love she had for the people she knew and her afternoon need for back scratches.”

A necropsy performed on Lena showed that she had an abnormal left kidney. “At the moment, it is not obvious as to the cause of death,” said Staff Veterinarian Shirley Llizo. Dr. Llizo has submitted for blood testing and histopathology to better understand the illness that led to Lena’s demise.

“Social distancing has made it more challenging for staff to grieve for the loss of Lena,” said Wiley. “In these uncertain times, we could not be more proud of our team and the care they offered Lena. She will be missed.”

Kay Reece, a Topeka Zoo Docent shared this, “Lena was a spirit animal. She loved her time outside watching from her barrel as visitors and friends came to see her. Lena remembered her friends and was always interested in what they had to share with her, whether pocket contents or bubbles, pictures or a kiss. Her instinct for learning and love for friends will be something I will never forget. Where a beautiful soul has lived; beautiful memories remain.”

Popular orangutan at Kansas zoo has died

MONTGOMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the burglary of a gun store and have two suspects in custody.

On April 4, deputies and investigators were dispatched to USA Gun Bunker in Cherryvale for a report of a burglary of the gun store, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

Deputies and Investigators worked diligently, following the evidence and interviewing multiple individuals. Due to the nature of the items stolen, deputies requested assistance from The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives)

At this point in the investigation multiple firearms have been recovered and two arrests have been made, according to Wade.

Arron Blake, 34, of rural Cherryvale is being held on requested charges of&nbsp; burglary, theft, possession of narcotics and traffic in contraband in a correctional facility and is also being held on a felony warrant stemming from another case. He remains in custody.

Alexis Hoesmam, 28, of Cherryvale, was being held on requested charges that include aiding and abetting burglary and theft.

Lopez is charged with capital murder for the shooting deaths of 24- year-old Mickayla Sorell and her 8-year-old daughter, Natalya Sorrell.&nbsp; He is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and aggravated assault.

He is being held on a bond of one-million dollars in the murder case.  He was also charged with two probation violations. The cases are from 2017 and 2018.  His bond on each of the probation violations is $250,000, according to the district attorney's office.

On Monday, March 31, officers responded to the call of a welfare check at a residence in the 4500 block of South Walnut, after Sorell did not report to work. Upon arrival, officers located both victims deceased inside the residence.

The investigation revealed that the shootings took place on Saturday, March 28.&nbsp; Lopez was identified as the suspect in the case and was subsequently charged by the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office on April 3.&nbsp; 

On April 9, police followed up on information that Lopez was at the home of family members, according to officer Kevin Wheeler. Police were able to arrest him without incident at a residence in the 4600 block of South Gold in Wichita, according to Wheeler.

Kan. man charged in murder of girlfriend, child makes court appearance

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made an arrest

Just after 11:00 a.m. Sunday, police responded to the area of W. 21st&nbsp;Street and Ridge in Wichita to assist in looking for a green GMC Sierra that was stolen from an apartment complex, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Officers were also looking for a tan Chevrolet Silverado that was possibly involved with the auto theft as well as vehicle burglaries reported earlier in the morning.

An officer spotted the tan truck at West 2nd&nbsp;Street and Young and initiated a traffic stop.&nbsp; 

The driver later identied as 30-year-old Cody Scrimsher failed to stop, and a vehicle pursuit ensued.&nbsp; The pursuit was terminated in the 1900 block of West Second due to Scrimsher's erratic driving.&nbsp; 

Scrimsher ultimately stopped the truck at West 2nd&nbsp;Street and North Handley Street and ran from the vehicle. Police were able to apprehended him after a brief foot pursuit.

The investigation revealed that Scrimsher was involved in a vehicle burglary in the 500 block of N. Tyler, where a GPS was stolen.&nbsp; Additionally, Scrimsher has previously been arrested and convicted of charges that include criminal possession of a firearm, aggravated weapons violation, criminal possession of a weapon, theft, and driving while suspended, according to Davidson.

He is being held on requested charges of felony evade and elude, burglary and theft, according to Davidson.

Police catch Kansas felon for alleged pickup theft

NEW YORK (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak has fueled attempts to ban abortions in some states, but providers where the procedure remains available report increased demand, often from women distraught over economic stress and health concerns linked to the pandemic.

Some clinics are seeing patients who traveled hundreds of miles from states such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/texas">Texas</a>, which has banned abortions during much of the pandemic on grounds they are nonessential.

Dr. Allison Cowett of Family Planning Associates in Chicago said one recent patient was a teen who drove from Texas with her mother. In Atlanta, Dr. Marissa Lapedis said her clinic accommodated a woman who received her initial abortion consultation in Texas but flew to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/georgia">Georgia</a>&nbsp;when the Texas ban postponed a second visit to receive the abortion pill.

An influx of women from Texas contributed to the upsurge of abortions at Burkhart’s clinic in Wichita. She said it performed 252 abortions in March, up from 90 in March 2019.

Dr. Jen Villavicencio, an abortion provider in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/michigan">Michigan</a>, predicts that demand for abortions will continue to increase during the pandemic.

“I hear it in my patient’s voices and questions daily,” she said via email. “They're worried about how they will make their rent, feed their family, access a ventilator if the need arises.”

The pandemic has prompted Planned Parenthood, the national’s largest abortion provider, to make adjustments.

In&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/new-york">New York</a>&nbsp;City, the epicenter of the outbreak in the U.S., Planned Parenthood has modified medication abortion procedures to minimize travel and potential COVID-19 exposure for patients and staff.

Dr. Meera Shah is chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic, which serves New York’s northern suburbs. She says her staff is expanding telemedicine as they see an uptick in patients seeking abortions, often convinced that “having a child right now isn’t best for them.”

“We provided a medication abortion to an EMT while she was sitting in her ambulance,” Shah said. “We provided abortion care to a mother who was at home with her children running around behind her.”

Dr. Anne Davis, an OB-GYN at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, said all services at her hospital are under stress and COVID-19 patients are numerous. In most cases, her team refers women seeking abortions to non-hospital clinics.

She cited one patient who had wanted to be pregnant but requested an abortion when it became clear her medical condition would require multiple hospital visits. Davis said the woman had received comparable treatment during her first pregnancy but decided this time that the hospital wouldn’t be as safe.

One of the biggest challenges in counseling pregnant women, is uncertainty, Davis said.

“We don’t know enough about this to say it’s going to be fine — your pregnancy will proceed in usual fashion and there will be no impact from COVID-19,” she said. “They want us to say it will be all right. We have to say, ‘We don’t know.’”

At Hope Clinic for Women in Granite City,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/illinois">Illinois</a>, close to Saint Louis, deputy director Alison Dreith says women are now less likely to change their minds once they schedule an abortion. Normally, 50% go through with it; amid the pandemic, the rate is 85%.

Hope Clinic staff member Hannah Dismer said one couple decided to terminate a pregnancy they had planned. The wife worried that giving birth at a hospital might expose her to the coronavirus and create risk for the child they have.

“It hit me really hard that she and her husband had to make that difficult decision,” Dismer said.

Another concern is that abortion bans will force some women into continuing with high-risk pregnancies.

“Without services, very sick babies will be born and families forced to watch them suffer who would, in other times, have made a different decision,” said Dr. Maryl Sackeim, a Chicago-based OB-GYN.

The push for new bans has added urgency to a campaign providing information about relatively safe options for do-it-yourself abortions.

Already, many abortions are induced at home with a two-drug combination, under the guidance of a health professional. Advocacy groups say home abortions using one of the drugs — misoprostol — can be done without professional oversight.

Misoprostol is available only by prescription in the U.S. but is available online from some countries where it sells over the counter.

Attorney Jill E. Adams, executive director of If/When/How, supports that option and urges prosecutors not to target women who use this method.

“More people will need abortions during this pandemic,” she said. “Targeting people who end their pregnancies at home is wrong as a matter of law and dangerous as a matter of public health.”

Amid debate about whether abortion is an essential service, anti-abortion protesters have mobilized outside numerous clinics — in some cases triggering confrontations with police over whether they’re violating social-distancing rules. In&nbsp;North Carolina, eight of about 50 protesters were arrested April 4 after refusing to disperse outside a clinic in Charlotte.

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a weekend burglary and have made an arrest.

Just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a prowler call in the 7800 block of SW Valencia Road, according to deputy Abigail Christian 

The caller reported a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway and heard a tapping on the window. Deputies arrived and located a woman identified as Theresa M. Miller, 35, of Topeka. 

Deputies arrested Miller on requested charges of burglary and theft.

Kan. homeowner heard suspect tapping on window 

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man has been charged with first-degree murder for a fatal shooting near a library.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said that 27-year-old Overland Park resident Dvonte Brown was charged in the killing of Micah Babick, a 29-year-old from Prairie Village.

Babick was shot and killed Wednesday in an Overland Park parking lot by the Johnson County Central Resources Library.

Police arrested Brown for the killing on Saturday. The district attorney’s office said Brown’s bail was set at $1 million.

The victim’s brother witnessed the shooting, police said.

Court records didn’t list a lawyer for Brown as of Monday.

JACKSON COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect following a high-speed chase.

&nbsp;A sheriff’s deputy and a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper allegedly measured the speed of a southbound Chrysler Sebring near 142nd and U.S. 75 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The driver later identified as&nbsp;Harold Jesse Sheffield II, 54,&nbsp; Topeka, allegedly attempted to elude law enforcement when a pursuit ensued. 

The vehicle came to a stop approximately ½ mile west of US Highway 75 on 110th Road. 

Authorities arrested Sheffield and found a substance believed to be methamphetamine and an opened alcoholic container in the vehicle, according to Morse. 

&nbsp;Sheffield was booked into the Jackson County Jail for fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine, driving while suspended, and transporting and open container. Sheffield also had 3 outstanding Jackson County warrants and 1 Shawnee County warrant, according to Morse.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on theft charges.

Just before 2a.m. Wednesday, deputies located a stump grinder and a trailer in the driveway of a residence in the 2700 block of NE 35th&nbsp;Street, according to Shawnee County Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.

 These items matched the description of stolen property reported to the Topeka Police Department with an estimated value of around $15,000. Deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence. Topeka Police officers arrived on scene a short time later and seized the stolen property.

Later in the morning at around 5:10 a.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 1998 Chevy Z71 pickup truck near NE Sherman Rd and K4 HWY for an equipment violation. The Chevy pickup matched the description of a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the theft of the stump grinder and trailer.&nbsp;

The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Travis D. Walker of Topeka was detained for questioning by the Topeka Police Department and was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Felony Theft charges.&nbsp;

The Chevy pickup matched the description of a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the theft of the stump grinder and trailer.&nbsp;The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Travis D. Walker of Topeka was detained for questioning by the Topeka Police Department and was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Felony Theft charges.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

GOVE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating a suspect after a chase on Interstate 70 in Gove County are adding additional charges in the case.

Just after 7 a.m. Thursday, a man who falsely identified himself to officers as Abron R. Dunston, Jr. 36, Norfolk, VA, pulled into the parking lot of the Golden Plains Credit Union in Quinter, according to Gove County Sheriff Allan Weber.&nbsp;

The driver pulled the 2019 Nissan passenger vehicle up to a woman arriving for work and demanded she give up her purse. When the victim refused, Dunston drove away.

Law enforcement responded to the report and KHP troopers picked up the chase on westbound Interstate 70 near the Grinnell exit.&nbsp;

The Nissan continued into Thomas County where Dunston (Bowser) drove through the median and then westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at speeds of 110 miles per hour, according to Heilman. Dunston (Bowser) also avoided two attempts by law enforcement to use stop sticks.

Dunston (Bowser) then traveled back through the median to the westbound lanes, lost control of the Nissan in a ditch and crashed through a KDOT fence between the Sleep Inn and Walmart in Colby, according to Heilman.

When Dunston (Bowser, who was not seriously injured, refused to exit the vehicle, officers used a K9 to help them make an arrest, according to Sheriff Weber.

According to Heilman, the Nissan was reported stolen in Virginia.

Dunston (Bowser) was treated for minor injuries remains jailed in Thomas County on requested charges that include the stolen vehicle, felony flee and elude and a weapons possession violation charge. Authorities will also add a charge of obstruction, according to Heilman.

Update: Suspect drove wrong-way on I-70 during chase

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating shooting death of a Kansas woman and her 8-year-old daughter have made an arrest.

Police followed up on information that 25-year-old Daniel Lopez was at the home of family members, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.&nbsp; Late Friday, police were able to arrest him without incident at a residence in the 4600 block of South Gold in Wichita, according to Wheeler.

Lopez was wanted on felony Sedgwick County warrant for the shooting deaths of 24- year-old Mickayla Sorell and her 8-year-old daughter, Natalya Sorrell.&nbsp;

At approximately 4:25 p.m. on Monday, March 31, officers responded to the call of a welfare check at a residence in the 4500 block of South Walnut, after Sorell did not report to work. Upon arrival, officers located both victims deceased inside the residence.

The investigation revealed that the shootings took place on Saturday, March 28.&nbsp; Lopez was identified as the suspect in the case and was subsequently charged by the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office on April 3. <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18825536">He is being held on bond</a>s totaling $1,500,000., according to online jail records.

Kan. man jailed for murder of girlfriend, her 8-year-old daughter

A serial burglar was arrested in Hays after a theft at a liquor store.

Video evidence showed an individual throwing a brick through the front door of the Southside Liquor, 701 Vine.

The suspect then grabbed four bottles of liquor from the business. The loss was estimated at around $60.

At 3:16 a.m. Friday, March 13, Anthony Wayne Gilliland, 22, Hays was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, criminal damage to property and theft, according to Hays Police Chief Don Scheiber.

Gilliland has two previous burglary convictions and interference with law enforcement.

Kansas felon arrested after liquor store burglary

A Kansas man was arrested Thursday in Hays after allegedly coughing on a store clerk while making statements about the coronavirus.

At 12:43 p.m., the Hays Police Department responded to a complaint of a disorderly customer at Walmart, 4301 Vine.

Responding officers found the incident began after a clerk informed the suspect there was a limit on the amount of hamburger he could purchase, according to HPD Chief Don Schiebler.

"The customer became upset and began yelling profanities and began knocking stuff over and breaking things inside the store," Schiebler said.

He then allegedly began coughing hysterically in the direction of a clerk while making comments about the coronavirus.

Michael Craig Cochrane, 50, Rush County, was arrested on suspicion of criminal threat, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

He was being held in the Ellis County jail and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, Scheibler said.

"The Hays Police Department understands this is a trying time for the community," he said. "But we have to work together. We have to remain patient with each other as we try to work through this situation.

"We appreciate the community's continued cooperation and support, but we want to be clear we will not be going to tolerate this kind of behavior," Scheibler added.
