MANHATTAN — A team of Kansas State University researchers has developed an improved treatment for lung cancer, and project collaborators have completed the first procedure in Australia as part of a clinical study.

The improved bronchoscopic microwave ablation treatment could treat small lung tumors in a single-session procedure that would improve patient safety and reduce cost. The clinical study is designed to assess the safety and technical feasibility of the phenoWave microwave ablation system.

Kansas State University, in collaboration with Royal Melbourne Hospital, phenoMapper LLC, and Australian Healthcare Solutions, announced the completion of the first bronchoscopic microwave ablation treatment by Daniel Steinfort, professor of medicine at Royal Melbourne Hospital, and his team.

"The ablation procedure was straightforward and required skills that all interventional pulmonologists would possess," Steinfort said. "Deployment of the ablation catheter to the site of the treatment target was as simple as any diagnostic sampling procedure. This raises the exciting prospect of being able to deliver curative ablation treatment to small lung tumors via a safe and widely available procedure modality in a single treatment session."

The phenoWave microwave ablation system is designed to coagulate soft tissue by applying thermal energy for bronchoscopic lung tissue ablation. This advancement will enable physicians to diagnose and treat any lesions in the lungs in a single session in the future, which improves patient safety and reduces cost.

The phenoWave system's underlying technology was jointly developed by the research team led by K-State engineer&nbsp;<a href="https://ece.k-state.edu/about/people/faculty/prakash/">Punit Prakash</a>&nbsp;and industry partner phenoMapper LLC under a National Cancer Institute academic-industry partnership R01 grant. Prakash is the recipient of the Paul L. Spainhour professorship in electrical engineering and a professor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://ece.k-state.edu/">Mike Wiegers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering</a>.

"We are excited to announce the first bronchoscopic lung microwave ablation treatment in Australia," Prakash said. "Our project has greatly benefited from close collaboration between investigators in the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and our industry and clinical partners, as well as support from the Johnson Cancer Research Center in the College of Arts and Sciences and K-State Innovation Partners. KSU researchers announce clinical study for improved lung cancer treatment

Drought plaguing parts of Kansas created shorter wheat plants and thinner crop stands this year. In turn, Kansas State University wheat production specialist Romulo Lollato advises growers to make adjustments at harvest time.

“This year, the biggest cause for short wheat has been drought stress,” he said. “During springtime, the crop starts to go through a phase called stem elongation. That’s when plant height is determined. In certain areas, there was virtually no moisture, which caused the plants to be short.”

Not all areas of Kansas have experienced this level of drought. Lollato said irregular rain patterns gave rise to significant plant height differences across counties and even in the same fields.

“The Kansas crop is not uniformly short. A very sparse and variable rainfall distribution created these ‘waves’ within areas where tall and short plants occur, simultaneously, in those locations,” he said.

According to Lollato, producers can attach stripper headers to the front of their combines to effectively harvest small wheat plants. Stripper headers separate the grain head from the remaining plant. On the other hand, traditional headers detach plants halfway down their stems.

Lollato said, “Essentially, they have fingers on them. Those fingers pluck the heads out from the stem. The stripper headers feed the combine with only the wheat heads, which means having a cleaner product go into the combine, with increased efficiency.”

Harvesting low-standing wheat plants with a stripper header can help improve soil quality in semi-arid areas.

“They leave more crop residue behind. It will act as a barrier against weeds and shade the fields, which cools soil temperatures and delays weed emergence. Moisture retention is another important advantage. Stripper headers reduce water loss through evaporation, runoff and erosion.”

If a producer uses a stripper header this year, future crops have the potential to benefit as well, according to Lollato.

“There is a lot of value in having more residue left in the fields,” he said. “When growers plant wheat directly into that crop residue after this year’s harvest, they get all of those benefits, like added moisture, weed control, and erosion reduction, which can help return a very good dollar amount the following summer.”

Conventional headers remain as another workable solution for operations not able to invest in additional implements.

“A stripper header is a pricey investment,” Lollato said. “However, there might be more challenges operating with a conventional header – especially on ground with a great slope – but they still work in this case.”

Making alterations to a traditional header may yield better results when harvesting stunted wheat fields with them.

“The most important thing to keep in mind is to maintain the cutting height as high as possible. You can also adjust the reel on the header to get more movement of wheat from the cutter bar to the auger,” Lollato said.

Other combine headers appropriate for harvesting poorer quality wheat stands include draper and flex heads. Kathy Tremont, Republican, has filed for election to the Second District seat on the Geary County Commission. She paid the filing fee in the county clerk's office Monday.

Tremont served as Geary County Treasurer for 30 years before her retirement and was a county employee for a total of 44 years. She served two terms as President of the Kansas County Treasurer’s Association and in 2007, was awarded the Outstanding Kansas Treasurer Award.

A westbound 2007 Ford F150 driven by Jeff Bradley Sells, 44, Mankato, struck the Hyundai in the intersection.

EMS transported Brenner to the Clay County Medical Center. He died early Monday, according to the KHP.

Sells and a passenger in the Ford were not injured. Brenner was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

RCPD investigating alleged credit card theft

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7a.m. Saturday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a Chevy Silverado driven by a boy from Manhattan, failed to yield at the red light&nbsp;at the corner of McCall Road and Poyntz Avenue.

The pickup collided with a Honda Odyssey driven Camilla Roberts, 46, Manhattan.

EMS transported the pickup driver to Via Christi by EMS for non life-threatening injuries. He was cited for failure to stop at a traffic light.

Manhattan boy hospitalized after pickup, van crash

TOPEKA—Kansas&nbsp;district&nbsp;courts affected by an Oct. 12 cybersecurity incident have finished working through a backlog of new cases and paper documents filed while&nbsp;court&nbsp;information systems were offline from mid-October to early January.

District&nbsp;courts in 104 counties switched to paper filings after&nbsp;court&nbsp;information systems managed by the Office of Judicial Administration were taken offline following the Oct. 12 cybersecurity incident.

“After the cybersecurity incident, our first goal was to restore all&nbsp;court&nbsp;information systems safely and securely,” Chief Justice Marla Luckert said. “Once these systems were restored, district&nbsp;court&nbsp;staff then had to work through a backlog of paper filings to bring the district&nbsp;court&nbsp;case management system up to date. That work is now complete.”

Some&nbsp;courts reduced the hours their&nbsp;court&nbsp;clerk offices were open to give staff uninterrupted time to focus on working through their paper backlogs.

As&nbsp;courts finished this work, some of their&nbsp;court&nbsp;clerk office staff helped&nbsp;courts in other judicial districts work through their backlogs. A statewide workshare team numbering about a dozen people from&nbsp;court&nbsp;clerk offices in several judicial districts helped multiple&nbsp;courts work through their backlogs.

“I’m infinitely grateful to the judges and&nbsp;court&nbsp;employees who worked to overcome the challenges our&nbsp;court&nbsp;system faced following the cybersecurity incident,” Luckert said. “I’m also grateful for the understanding and patience shown to our&nbsp;courts by attorneys and the public as we worked to continue to provide service under trying circumstances.”

Working across lines that define judicial districts and counties was not possible before the judicial branch began rolling out a new case management system in district&nbsp;courts statewide.

By August 2023, all district&nbsp;courts operated on the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/QBf3akVCxgLprDaWuqeW0GrWYZXRkvCulrAv5Rs5lhQ" target="_blank">Kansas&nbsp;eCourt case management system</a>&nbsp;except the&nbsp;court&nbsp;in Johnson County. The Johnson County District&nbsp;Court&nbsp;will transition to the new case management system later this year.

This new case management system also makes it possible for people to search most district&nbsp;court&nbsp;case information online through the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/QBf3akVCxgLprDaWuqeW0CzNMT7YlfmX5NfWaHw2Da4" target="_blank">Kansas&nbsp;District&nbsp;Court&nbsp;Public Access Portal</a>.

Now that all&nbsp;courts have worked through their paper backlogs, the portal now has information from the period&nbsp;courts were operating on paper.

 </figure>TOPEKA—Kansas&nbsp;district&nbsp;courts affected by an Oct. 12 cybersecurity incident have finished working through a backlog of new cases and paper documents filed while&nbsp;court&nbsp;information systems were offline from mid-October to early January.District&nbsp;courts in 104 counties switched to paper filings after&nbsp;court&nbsp;information systems managed by the Office of Judicial Administration were taken offline following the Oct. 12 cybersecurity incident.“After the cybersecurity incident, our first goal was to restore all&nbsp;court&nbsp;information systems safely and securely,” Chief Justice Marla Luckert said. “Once these systems were restored, district&nbsp;court&nbsp;staff then had to work through a backlog of paper filings to bring the district&nbsp;court&nbsp;case management system up to date. That work is now complete.”Some&nbsp;courts reduced the hours their&nbsp;court&nbsp;clerk offices were open to give staff uninterrupted time to focus on working through their paper backlogs.As&nbsp;courts finished this work, some of their&nbsp;court&nbsp;clerk office staff helped&nbsp;courts in other judicial districts work through their backlogs. A statewide workshare team numbering about a dozen people from&nbsp;court&nbsp;clerk offices in several judicial districts helped multiple&nbsp;courts work through their backlogs.“I’m infinitely grateful to the judges and&nbsp;court&nbsp;employees who worked to overcome the challenges our&nbsp;court&nbsp;system faced following the cybersecurity incident,” Luckert said. “I’m also grateful for the understanding and patience shown to our&nbsp;courts by attorneys and the public as we worked to continue to provide service under trying circumstances.”Working across lines that define judicial districts and counties was not possible before the judicial branch began rolling out a new case management system in district&nbsp;courts statewide.By August 2023, all district&nbsp;courts operated on the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/QBf3akVCxgLprDaWuqeW0GrWYZXRkvCulrAv5Rs5lhQ" target="_blank">Kansas&nbsp;eCourt case management system</a>&nbsp;except the&nbsp;court&nbsp;in Johnson County. The Johnson County District&nbsp;Court&nbsp;will transition to the new case management system later this year.This new case management system also makes it possible for people to search most district&nbsp;court&nbsp;case information online through the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/QBf3akVCxgLprDaWuqeW0CzNMT7YlfmX5NfWaHw2Da4" target="_blank">Kansas&nbsp;District&nbsp;Court&nbsp;Public Access Portal</a>.Now that all&nbsp;courts have worked through their paper backlogs, the portal now has information from the period&nbsp;courts were operating on paper.

The City of Junction City held a School’s Out Skate on Thursday, May 23rd. We had a great turn-out with almost 300 paid skaters. The next public skate date is Wednesday, June 12th from 1-5p.m. Admission is $7.00 per skater.

This past week 12 trees were planted in Heritage Park. Six of these trees replaced the dead and dying trees that were removed this Spring. The other six were new additions to further improve the beauty of the park!

The Parks and Recreation Report

As we move into the month of June we will all begin looking forward to Summer and the warmer months. For most, school is out, and our activities shift to the outdoors.

Naturally the warm weather means activity at the City Swimming Pool. The pool opened on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and the crowds at the pool have been great. One big issue is having enough Life Guards to operate the pool. Like many other pools, that is a challenge for us to hire enough staff to not only work when the pool is open each day but also to teach swimming lessons. The shortage of guards can lead to the pool being closed at certain times during the week. That is not what anyone wants to do, but sometimes there is no choice.

We are often asked why the pool closes in early August. Simply because we do not have an adequate number of guards as many head back to school, and we are forced to close the pool. In the first City I managed in Western Kansas, we had a group of Mom’s that believed the pool should stay open until Labor Day. They all kept their guard certification and came out and worked for a couple of hours each day after school in mid to late August and did a few weekend hours for the kids to enjoy the pool for a bit longer in the season. I haven’t been able to reduplicate that since, but it was a great thing in that community.

I know some people say that Junction City needs a new pool or Water Park with many features for all to enjoy. I don’t argue that, but a facility like that will probably be in the 7-to-10-million-dollar price range. An indoor facility would probably be nearly double that amount. I really do believe as the City continues to whittle down the General Obligation debt that a new facility will be doable in 6 to 8 years.

In the City I mentioned above, back in 1997 the City built a new swimming pool. Not a major aquatic park, but it was the first pool in the west part of the State with large slides and other features and was modern for that time and people drove from as far as 100 miles away on the weekend to bring their family to that pool. When the pool was being built I had a resident stop by my office to talk about the pool. He asked me if the old pool made money and I responded with no. He then said will the new pool make money, and I leaned back in my chair and answered, probably not. Of course, he said if the pool does not make money, why do we have one? I looked up at him and said that the parks and the City Cemetery don’t make money and like the pool we have to have them for our community. Simply a pool is just needed in a community as well as baseball parks, golf course, parks, walking trails, and the list can go on and on. No one wants the City to charge admission fees for the pool you would have to have if profit was the motif.

Over the past few years, the City has made improvements at the North Park Baseball complex and yes money is spent to make improvements at Rathert Field. Don’t forget the playground at the 5th Street or Swimming Pool Park. A few years ago, a group of concerned citizens, called Quality Play for All, made the push to turn this into the great playground it is. It took a mixture of grants along with private donations and City dollars to make it happen. Of course, know we need to look at the other playgrounds and parks including a potential new playground in the far western portion of the City.

Okay, I know some will say the City should just focus on streets. Yes, they are important and that is why the City will have over $2.5 million in street projects this year. Another $300 K will be spent on some alley improvements and soon the City will bid out a sidewalk improvement project that will include taking down the rock wall at the 5th Street Park and allow for more parking there. Also, an ADA issue will be addressed on the sidewalk in Heritage Park as the sidewalk on the north side of the park does not meet those standards.

Are the streets perfect? No, they are not. But the increased amount of dollars the City has spent over the recent years is making progress. At the same time taxes have remained the same and as we talked about a couple of weeks ago, taxes in Junction City are more average and certainly not the highest for cities of this size.

Yes, streets are important, but we have always have to find the right balance as those other services and facilities are needed to make this a well-rounded community.

The city manager issues the 515 Report

WASHINGTON — As part of its ongoing effort to replace diesel-fueled school buses, the Biden administration on Wednesday said it will provide approximately 530 school districts across nearly all states with almost $1 billion to help them purchase clean school buses.

The initiative, part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program rebate competition, will give funds to school districts in 47 states and the District of Columbia to help them buy over 3,400 clean school buses. Alaska, Hawaii and Nevada are not part of this round of funding.

Nearly all of the clean school buses purchased will be electric, at 92%, according to the administration.

“This announcement is not just about clean school buses, it’s about the bigger picture,” EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said during a call with reporters on Tuesday, prior to the announcement. “We are improving air quality for our children, reducing greenhouse gas pollution and expanding our nation’s leadership in developing the clean vehicles of the future.”

Low-income, rural and tribal communities — accounting for approximately 45% of the selected projects —&nbsp; are slated to receive roughly 67% of the total funding, per the administration.

In Missouri, the funding will go to 17 school districts and a charter school. They will receive $18.1 million to replace 56 buses, with all the new buses to be electric.

Regan noted how “low-income communities and communities of color have long felt the disproportionate impacts of air pollution leading to severe health outcomes that continue to impact these populations.”

As for business and economic opportunities, Regan pointed to the development of new, well-paying manufacturing jobs and investment in local businesses stemming from the increasing demand for these clean school buses.

“As more and more schools make the switch to electric buses, there will be a need for American-made batteries, charging stations and service providers to maintain the buses supercharging and reinvigorating local economies,” he added.

The Clean School Bus Program has now collectively awarded nearly $3 billion to fund approximately 8,500 electric and alternative fuel buses for over 1,000 communities across the United States, according to the administration.

The program started through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, which includes $5 billion over five years to transform the country’s existing school buses with “zero-emission and low-emission models,” per the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.epa.gov/cleanschoolbus">EPA</a>.

Among many negative health and environmental effects, especially for communities of color, diesel exhaust exposure can lead to major health conditions such as asthma and respiratory illnesses, according to the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.epa.gov/dera/learn-about-impacts-diesel-exhaust-and-diesel-emissions-reduction-act-dera">EPA</a>.

Exposure to diesel exhaust can also “worsen existing heart and lung disease, especially in children and the elderly,” the agency said.

Funds for clean school buses coming to hundreds of districts, White House says 

Authorities converged on the Old Highway 40 - Crider Road area in the five o'clock hour Sunday morning to rescue a man who had become stranded after his car became stuck in water during flash flooding that was occurring. Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said Junction City firefighters used safety line to get to him and walk him to safety. The Geary County Sheriff's Department confirmed that the driver was, Isaih Arturo-Pedraza, 24.&nbsp;

According to the Sheriff's Department four other people were also rescued near the Geary State Lake about 7:45 a.m. including one in a vehicle and three others after they had been trapped earlier in the morning. A Sheriff's patrol vehicle was used to cross an inlet to make rescues.

Severe thunderstorms moved through the area during the early morning hours Sunday and there was also a flash flood warning. Rainfall totals ranged from 2.21 inches on the west side of Junction City to 2.74 inches in the Lyons Creek Road area southwest of town to nearly three inches in the Chapman area.

In the 12000 block of J-Hill Road southeast of Junction City there was rock that washed over the roadway as well.

The public was urged to be careful and stay out of low water crossing areas. Do not drive through standing and rushing water.

Storms swept through Geary and Dickinson counties

ABILENE, Kansas — The Eisenhower Foundation has invited all World War II veterans to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kan., on Thursday, June 6, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The D-Day+80 Years event will include a Meet a World War II Veteran Reception, a Remembrance Ceremony, Veterans Panel and free admission to the Eisenhower Presidential Museum, speakers, military reenactors and hands-on education programs. This event is free and open to the public.

Led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the Allied armies in what became the largest amphibious invasion in military history. This historic event turned the tide of World War II and led to the eventual Allied victory over Nazi tyranny.

Junction City Commissioners will be asked Tuesday night to consider allowing the use of Rathert Field for a country music concert.

According to information provided by City Manager Allen Dinkel in the agenda packet for the governing body, Vaughn Sterling has asked to rent the field for the concert on Aug. 3rd. 

Sterling coordinates events across the country. Last year he held a concert in Wakefield on the baseball field and feels this would be a better facility and location. The concert would end in the 10:30 to 11 p.m. time frame. He also feels that it would give the stadium another use both now and in the future.

There are items to consider. One is the rental fee. Dinkel suggested $1,000 to $1,500 since there will be electric usage and the need to clean rest rooms and the area. The other is the potential to damage the field. The city manager noted that Sterling talked about putting the 24 by 30 stage in the outfield and allowing a standing crowd on the infield. Others would sit in the bleachers. Another concern is noise since there are residents nearby. There would be revenue, but the City would have some expenses.&nbsp;

As far as the staff recommendation is concerned, the plus side is that an event would draw people to Junction City now and possibly become an annual event. There are, however, the previous concerns to consider.

The commission meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 701 North Jefferson. Dinkel reported that Sterling is expected to be in attendance.

Request for use of Rathert Field for a music concert is on the city commission agenda

After having their season-opening game postponed on Thursday, the Junction City Brigade opened up their 2024 season on Friday night in Junction City.

The Topeka Warhawks quickly jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning, but the Brigade stormed back and put up five runs in the fourth inning to grab the lead and never looked back. Junction City added a run in the fifth inning with a home run to extend their lead to 6-2.&nbsp;

The Warhawks rallied in the late innings and even had the tying run on base in the ninth, but the Brigade were able to seal the victory, thanks to an unconventional double play to end the game.&nbsp;

A nice showing of Brigade fans were in attendance for the home opener, with 403 fans attending the first game of the summer at Rathert Field.&nbsp;

Following the Junction City Brigade victory, fans enjoyed a firework show to start off the season.&nbsp;

With the victory, the Brigade are 1-0 on the season and will play the Warhawks again on Saturday night, but this time in Topeka.&nbsp;

Junction City Brigade win home opener over Topeka Warhawks

MANHATTAN/JUNCTION CITY - On Thursday, May 30, the Special Olympics 'Flame of Hope' Law Enforcement Torch Run travelled through Pottawatomie, Riley and Geary counties on its way to Wichita for the <a href="https://soks.org/sports/state-competitions/state-summer-games/">State Summer Games</a> being held this weekend.

Members of the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office met with Riley County Police Department members at the Pottawatomie/Riley county line to hand off the torch.

RCPD then met up with Special Olympics athletes at the Ogden Community Center and ran to the Ogden Gate, where they handed off the torch to Fort Riley soldiers.

Fort Riley soldiers met Junction City Pacesetters Special Olympics athletes, members of the Junction City Police Department and the Geary County Sheriff's Office just outside the Grant Avenue gates.

Then the Junction City Pacesetters, JCPD and GCSO members ran through Junction City to Heritage Park for a final group photo.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Friday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by Natalie Aurora Sheller, 18, Manhattan, was westboiund on Interstate 70 at Tallgrass Road. 

The driver fell asleep. The car drifted into the median and the driver overcorrected. The sent the car across the eastbound lanes of the interstate and into the south ditch. The car struck an embankment, rolled three times and came to rest on its top.&nbsp;

EMS transported Sheller to Ascension Via Christ&nbsp; in Manhattan. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The camp, which will run June 17-18, as well as Thursday, June 20, will allow high school students the opportunity&nbsp;to explore different areas of STEM, including drones, game design, electricity and more.

Krista Blaisdell has filed by petition for reelection to Geary County Attorney.

Blaisdell filed as a Republican. She will be seeking her third term as county attorney.

The Geary County Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau team started Thursday on improvements for Freedom Park that will include an overhaul of the trail to the Atomic Annie cannon. The park is located on the bluff overlooking I-70 and the Marshall Army Airfield.

According to CVB Director Donna Price the staff painted a kiosk and trail signage this week. Quarry rocks are being added around the kiosk. Future plans call for a map plus a photo and explanation of the story of Atomic Annie on the kiosk.

Future plans also include installation of steps at the top of the hill with the rock used coming from a quarry. Vegetation atop the hill will be removed, and there is a proposal for the Flint Hills Regional leadership program participants to clean up vegetation, undertake sand blasting and painting of machinery atop the hill, including Atomic Annie.

There will be a Wear Orange community walk in Unity on Sunday, June 2, in Downtown Junction City. 

The Wear Orange Walk honors victims and survivors of senseless acts of violence (gun violence, domestic violence, drugs, bullying, suicide, and harassment).  Wearing the color orange symbolizes the value of each person’s life. 

The walk on Sunday is at 5:00 p.m. The meeting spot is in front of the Junction City Municipal Building at 700 N. Jefferson St. 

All are invited and welcome to attend. After the walk, a complimentary snack will be provided (until gone).

Just one week after performing at President Obama’s second inaugural parade in 2013, her life was taken at the age of 15. In the aftermath, teenagers in Chicago wanted to honor their friend and wore orange to raise awareness around gun violence. Today, Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the 120 people shot and killed every day in the United States, as well as the hundreds more who are wounded.

Geary County Booking Photos May 31

RILEY COUNTY–Authorities are investigating a fire at a home in rural Riley County.

Just after 3a.m. Friday, Riley County Fire District #1 was dispatched to a reported a house fire at 1819 Kientz Drive, in the Hunter’s Island area south of Manhattan. 

Crews found a home with smoke and flames showing. Two adults and three young children were asleep at the time of the fire. The family reports they were sleeping with bedroom doors closed and were awakened by the sound of the smoke alarm. 

They were able to escape safely through a bedroom window without injury. Unfortunately, three of the family’s four pet cats perished in the fire.

The damage estimate is not yet available, but firefighters on the scene report the kitchen area was destroyed and the rest of the home had extensive smoke damage.&nbsp; &nbsp;The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, according to&nbsp;Fire Chief Russel Stukey.

Sam Foster, who is also a volunteer firefighter with RCFD#1, and his family are the occupants who rent&nbsp;the home.&nbsp;

“The family will be displaced for at least several weeks while the significant damage is repaired."

 If anyone would like to help them out, donations to the Sam Foster family can be sent via the Riley County Firefighters Association,” said Stukey.

Donations can be sent by mail or delivered in person to the Riley County Firefighters Association, 115 N. 4th St., Manhattan, KS 66502. Please indicate the donation is intended for the Sam Foster family. For more information, call the RCFD#1 headquarters office at 785-537-6333.
