JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– Geary County Schools USD 475 is proud to announce that Spring Valley Elementary first grade teacher Denise Acosta and Junction City High School audio and video teacher Easton Lager have been named the district’s nominees for the Kansas Horizon Award Program.

Acosta was named the USD 475 Elementary&nbsp;Kansas Horizon Award&nbsp;nominee, while Lager claimed the Secondary&nbsp;Kansas Horizon Award&nbsp;nomination. By being named USD 475’s Kansas Horizon Award winners, Acosta and Lager both received a $1,000 check on Monday from Central National Bank of Junction City. The duo will also be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting.

The Kansas Horizon Award Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies, and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in classrooms across the state. The mission of the program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.

Acosta, who is now in her second year of teaching at Spring Valley, was&nbsp;raised in a southern village called Umatac in Guam. She&nbsp;served as a Signal Systems Specialist in the Army from 2001 to 2016 before moving to the Junction City area in July of 2018.&nbsp;

She began working in USD 475 as a substitute teacher in January of 2022 while finishing up her degree at Kansas State University.&nbsp;Fast forward to 2024 and Acosta, who also student taught at Lincoln Elementary, can now be found encouraging her first-grade students to do their very best every single day.

“It means a lot to be named the district’s elementary recipient for the Kansas Horizon Award. It is a huge honor,” said Acosta. “Every day I walk into my classroom, I am so grateful and honored to be in a profession where I can make a difference in one of my students lives. My students know I am dedicated to them, and we praise each other for giving their best."&nbsp;

Lager, who is also in his second year in the district and is originally from Garden City, has helped transform Junction City High School into having one of the best audio and video departments in the entire state during his short time in the classroom.&nbsp;

When he’s not teaching his students about photography, cameras or all things media, Lager, who graduated from Kansas State University, oversees Blue Jay Online and Blue Jay Media, handling everything from running live events online to creating daily social media posts about students and staff. He is the main graphic designer and videographer at the high school, while also overseeing and creating all of the school’s video board content and informational videos. Lager, who produced over 40 live streams during the 2023-24 school year, can be found most days managing all inhouse audio and video student-run productions, helping run a multi-camera setup for everything from football games to one-act plays. He wouldn’t have it any other way.&nbsp;

“It is a huge honor and means the world to me that I was named the Kansas Horizon Award secondary nominee for USD 475. I think it shows a lot about my character and the ability I have in being able to relate to and have a positive relationship with our students,” said Lager. “Receiving this honor at this stage of my career lets me know that I am doing the right thing and helping our students grow every single day.”&nbsp;

Central National Bank is hosting another fundraiser this Wednesday, Oct. 2, for United Way of Junction City/Geary County. 

The Chili and Cinnamon Roll fundraiser will be from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the parking lot on 8th and Washington in Junction City. The meal will be $8 and include 16 oz. of Chili and a Cinnamon Roll.  

The cinnamon rolls were donated by The Friendship House, and the beef was donated by Blythe Family Farms. 

All the proceeds will go to United Way of Junction City/Geary County. Rolling Hills Construction will make a match donation of the first 75 meals.

RCPD: Manhattan business lost $3,300 in alleged ID theft

RILEY COUNTY —Three people were injured in two separate weekend accidents in Riley County.

Just after 6p.m. Friday, a Ford F150 driven by Marie Freeman, 56, Manhattan, was traveling at the intersection of McCall Road and Hayes Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The driver failed to yield at the red light and the pickup struck a 2018 Chevy Malibu driven by Tabitah Dobrovolny, 32, Ogden.&nbsp;&nbsp; EMS transported Freeman to Via Christi&nbsp;for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. She was also cited for failure to stop at a red light, according to the RCPD.

Just before 7:30p.m. Saturday, a 2009 GMC 2500 driven by Thomas Henton, 65, Clay Center collided with a 2022 Hyundai Accent driven by&nbsp;Kristtoffer Schrater, 45, of Marysville, according to the RCPD.

EMS transported Schrater to Via Christi for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and his passenger, Debra Schrater 35, also of Marysville was transported via Medical Flight Helicopter to Stormont Vail for treatment of her injuries. 

Henton was not injured and was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way, according to the RCPD.

The football frenzy will feature appearances by the Junction City High School team and the Junction City Jr Jays teams. The Jr Jays will hold practice on the front lawn at Valley View from 6:00-7:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The Blue Jay High School team will participate in a meet 'n greet at 6:15, and then the Jr Jays will also do a meet 'n greet following their practice at 7:30.&nbsp;

Food provided will include hot dogs, chips, and cookies.&nbsp;

According to the City's 515 Report the Junction City Fire Department sent two Water Rescue Specialists with KSTF1 to Florida for Hurricane Helene. JCFD has 8 members that are qualified with KSTF1 and around 16 personnel that are with KSTF2.

Kansas deployed a Type 1 swift water search and rescue team, Kansas Task Force 1, through the Office of the State Fire Marshal to assist the state of Florida and local jurisdictions responding to Hurricane Helene. Teams departed the evening of Sept. 24 from Olathe and Wichita. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management received the request from Florida and the task force was sent as part of an Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is a multistate, mutual aid agreement that facilitates interstate assistance in response and recovery operations during a disaster.

One Type I swift water/flood rescue teams with hard-bottom, and inflatable boats with personnel will be sent from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Derby Fire Department, Junction City Fire Department, Manhattan Fire Department, Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, Olathe Fire Department, Sedgwick County Fire District 1, and the Wichita Fire Department.

Junction City Fire Chief Jason Lankas said the teams will conduct search and rescue operations. Their objectives will be: To Search for and rescue individuals, provide basic life support (BLS) medical care, transport people and animals to the nearest location for secondary air or land transport, provide shore-based and boat-based water rescue, provide animal rescues, and support helicopter and urban search and rescue in water environments.

Col. Gerald Nunziato, Fort Riley garrison commander and members of the garrison command team will join volunteers with the Friends of the Fort Riley Museums on Wednesday to make apple pies for the Fall Apple Day Festival.&nbsp;

Each year, hundreds of apple pies are made by volunteers as part of the Festival. The pie-making effort relies on dozens of community volunteers. Money raised through the sale of the pies will be used by the Friends of the Fort Riley Museums to support Fort Riley museum programs and historical preservation.

Slices of baked pie will be available for purchase Saturday, Oct. 5. Other activities at the Fort Riley Fall Apple Day Festival include military technology and capabilities demonstrations, equipment displays, hands-on activities, live performances, historical reenactments and food and beverage concessions.

RILEY COUNTY —One person died in an accident involving a motorcycle and pedestrian just before 10p.m. Friday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department, a Honda CX 500 Custom motorcycle driven by Kameron Banks, 19, of Manhattan, was westbound in the 2300 Block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard between Kimball Avenue and Northfield Drive.

The motorcycle collided with a pedestrian, identified as Travell Toliver, 49, of Manhattan, who was crossing the highway. Toliver was pronounced dead at the scene.

&nbsp;Riley County EMS transported Banks to Ascension Via Christi and later he was transferred to Stormont Vail in Topeka by Life Star. He is expected to survive his injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow for investigation, with assistance from Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) in diverting traffic.

RCPD is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact our department at (785) 537-2112 or submit information through Crime Stoppers.

According to the Riley County Police Department a motorcycle with two occupants crashed on northbound Tuttle Creek Boulevard. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported the other occupant to Via Christi for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation. The RCPD released no additional details early Saturday.&nbsp; Check the Post for more information as it becomes available.

Manhattan man dead after struck by a motorcycle 

WASHINGTON, D.C — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), recently spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the launch of the Senate Sustainable Aviation Caucus to promote Sustainable Aviation Fuel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"When it comes to energy production, I believe in an all of the above strategy," Moran said. "We need to be investing in all energy production, including wind, solar, fossil fuels, ethanol, and now SAF. To help spur investment in SAF production, I introduced the Farm to Fly Act, which would help accelerate the production and development of SAF through existing U.S. Department of Agriculture programs. Generating this new fuel source would not be possible without our producers."

"I'm launching the&nbsp;Senate Sustainable Aviation Caucus with Senator Bozeman and Senator Duckworth as co-chairs," Moran said. "The purpose of this caucus is simple: advance our nation's biofuel, energy and aviation industries, in an effort to increase domestic competitiveness, promote national security and bolster passenger safety. This caucus will work together to find ways to maximize the aviation industry's financial sustainability and increase its resiliency."

According to the <a href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/bioenergy/sustainable-aviation-fuels">Department of Energy</a>,&nbsp;SAF is a biofuel used to power aircraft that has similar properties to conventional jet fuel but with a smaller carbon footprint. Depending on the feedstock and technologies used to produce it, SAF can reduce life cycle GHG emissions dramatically compared to conventional jet fuel. Some emerging SAF pathways even have a net-negative GHG footprint.

Homecoming Candidates crowned at JCHS on Friday Night

Manhattan blanked the Junction City Blue Jays on Friday night, winning 52-0 at Blue Jay Stadium.

After forcing a quick punt by Manhattan on the opening possession of the game, Junction City quarterback Conrad Gomez, who faced constant pressure all night, was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety, and gave Manhattan a 2-0 lead.

After the safety, Manhattan put their foot on the gas pedal, charged ahead, and took a 30-0 lead at halftime. For the Indians, running backs Jaydin Hudley and Kha'Mario Davis each scored two touchdowns on the night. Manhattan gets their fourth win of the season, improving to 4-0.

Junction City falls to 1-3 on the year. All three losses have been against top 10 opponents in class 6A. For the Blue Jays,  up next is another tough test, as the Hays Indians come to town next Friday.

The Indians of Manhattan, now 4-0, will be host Emporia next Friday.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– USD 75 announced on Friday, the&nbsp;North Central Kansas Music Educators Association said that Fort Riley Middle School eighth grader&nbsp;Lydianna&nbsp;Byington has been selected to the prestigious 2024-25 NCKMEA Middle School Honor Choir as an alto.&nbsp;By being selected, Byington, who had to audition for a spot on the honor choir, and is considered one of the top middle school singers in the KMEA North Central District.

She will join other selected middle school students from across the district on Saturday, Nov. 2 for a day of singing and a concert.&nbsp;"I have taught Lydianna for three years and I am so proud of how much she has grown as an artist. She is an exceptionally hard worker and a leader in our choir and drama program now as an eighth&nbsp;grader. I have no doubt she will shine in district choir,” said Jenny Towns, Fort Riley Middle School&nbsp;Director of Choir and Drama.&nbsp;

Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said repairs are expected to take about three hours. There have not been any injuries.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University is establishing a program to improve broadband access for thousands of Kansans, helping them navigate the digital economy more safely and successfully.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/projects/digital-ambassador-program.html">Digital Ambassador program</a>&nbsp;is currently being piloted in the West Plains Extension District — Scott and Finney counties — the Central Kansas Extension District — Ottawa and Saline counties — and the River Valley Extension District — Republic, Washington, Cloud and Clay counties.

"A major emphasis of this program is to help people who live in rural areas or are otherwise underserved to utilize internet applications in a beneficial way," said Rick Peterson, associate director of extension programs for K-State Research and Extension. "For example, we envision that trained Digital Ambassadors will help people learn how to access telehealth, use online banking, utilize precision agriculture, and access government documents and other resources to benefit their businesses or families. "Ultimately, we want to improve the lives of Kansans by helping them use the tools of technology safely and effectively."

According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://nationalskillscoalition.org/resource/publications/closing-the-digital-skill-divide/">report from the Washington D.C.-based National Skills Coalition</a>, 92% of today's jobs require digital skills, and investments in closing the digital skills divide can generate measurable economic payoff for businesses, workers and the broader economy. K-State works to help digital literacy

RILEY COUNTY — Law enforcement are investigating a registered Kansas Offender on new allegations.

Just after noon Thursday, police arrested 54-year-old Adrian Watson of Manhattan in the 3100 block of Anderson Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Watson was arrested on the probable cause offense of driving while license cancelled and violation of the offender registration act.

Watson is being held on a bond of $5,750. He has been listed as a registered offender since 2012 after a conviction for attempted kidnapping in Manhattan in 2009, according to the Kansas Department Corrections.

For the Blue Jays, they’ve had back-to-back losses against top teams in class 6A. First to Lawrence, then to Wichita Northwest last week.

As for Manhattan, they beat Lawrence Free State in week two and then beat Hays in week three.

The Manhattan Indians have won the last three meetings in the rivalry. Junction City’s last victory over Manhattan was in the 2020 season.

The measure would prevent the purchase of Kansas agricultural land by foreign national corporations. In the United States 35.2 million acres are already owned by foreign nationals.

Kobach noted that the Chinese government uses nontraditional surveillance methods. Acquisition of land could allow food production control as leverage against the U.S.&nbsp; &nbsp;Surveillance of U.S military installations was another concern.&nbsp;

This measure did not receive legislative approval in Kansas in the recent past but in 24 other states has already been approved. Some of those include Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and South Dakota.

Pen Pal Project with older adults. in Geary County those adults reside at the Bicentennial Manor, Bartell Place, Brookdale Senior Living, and two members of the United Methodist Church.

The remaining eight students who participated last school year are now students at the Junction City High School. Each student &amp; older adult seniors were presented gift cards from the organization for their participation. Students also received community service hours toward graduation. 

This school year, Sandra Havel, JAG-K Teacher, have 32 students (Middle School &amp; 6th graders) participating in the Pen Pal Project.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The cubs were born to resident tigers Indrah (female) and Jaya (male) on August 23, 2024. This marks a crucial victory for the global effort to save this critically endangered species, bringing positive hope for Malayan Tiger&nbsp;survival

The successful birth of these tigers is a triumph for Sunset Zoo and conservationists worldwide who are striving to protect Malayan tigers and other endangered species from extinction.

The birth of these cubs represents a crucial contribution to the global Malayan tiger population.&nbsp; Sunset Zoo, now a breeding facility for Malayan tigers, is possible due to the creation of Expedition Asia an immersive habitat of Asian animals featuring Malayan tigers, sloth bears, and Amur leopards, all of which are highly endangered. The habitats all have birthing dens, off-site bedrooms, and large yards for each animal species. The expansion was made possible by private and public partnership fundraising cost 4.3 million dollars, and opened in the spring of 2022. Expedition Asia was a dream made possible by the late Chuck Jackson of Manhattan, Kansas who was the lead donor making the facility a reality today.&nbsp;

In the next few months, a team of zookeepers and veterinarians will closely monitor the cubs to ensure they grow healthy and strong. As they develop, there  will be updates on their milestones, from their first steps to their introduction to the outdoor habitat.

 </figure>The successful birth of these tigers is a triumph for Sunset Zoo and conservationists worldwide who are striving to protect Malayan tigers and other endangered species from extinction.The birth of these cubs represents a crucial contribution to the global Malayan tiger population.&nbsp; Sunset Zoo, now a breeding facility for Malayan tigers, is possible due to the creation of Expedition Asia an immersive habitat of Asian animals featuring Malayan tigers, sloth bears, and Amur leopards, all of which are highly endangered. The habitats all have birthing dens, off-site bedrooms, and large yards for each animal species. The expansion was made possible by private and public partnership fundraising cost 4.3 million dollars, and opened in the spring of 2022. Expedition Asia was a dream made possible by the late Chuck Jackson of Manhattan, Kansas who was the lead donor making the facility a reality today.&nbsp;In the next few months, a team of zookeepers and veterinarians will closely monitor the cubs to ensure they grow healthy and strong. As they develop, there will be updates on their milestones, from their first steps to their introduction to the outdoor habitat.
