Lack of recent cooperation between the Geary County Sheriff's Department and Junction City Police Department along with Geary County jail needs were topics for candidates for sheriff Eric Coffman and Nathan Boeckman Thursday night. Coffman is currently serving as sheriff while Boeckman is challenging for the job. They spoke during a Chamber of Commerce forum at the C. L. Hoover Opera House.

Boeckman said for the past two years he had been approached by many community members concerned about local law enforcement not getting along and training together. "That's unfortunate for our community and that is the biggest reason I am running. Because if we think we're getting the best service here in Geary County without our local law enforcement working together then you're confused."&nbsp;

Eric Coffman said he agreed with Boeckman, the agencies should be getting along,&nbsp; and issues mentioned occurred before he had the ability to make a decision to fix those problems. He noted the Sheriff's Department however, had great relationships with some other agencies. "I have done extensive things to reach out to the Junction City Police Department, specifically to figure out what we can do to work better." He cited discussions with police leadership and the Junction City Police Officers Association on the question of what can be done to make things better. Coffman said the issue bothered him as well and at some point needs to be reciprocated because one person can't do it.

Both candidates were supportive of voters speaking with local law enforcement to find out the reasons they have for not working with the sheriff's office.

On the subject of the Geary County Detention Center there was a recent recommendation that $29 million was needed to make needed repairs and improvements. Coffman said, "My thoughts on it are it's terrible. That's where it's at right now. "The problem is, some of those things are out of the control of me specifically." Coffman added that the facility control is run by the public works and maintenance department. It will take collaboration with the county commission, sheriff's department and public works to try to repair and improve the facility.&nbsp; One question that will have to be answered is does Geary County need a new facility?

Boeckman has checked on options that might exist for federal or state money for the issue. He's hoping some funding can be obtained, "But I don't think we can get around repairing or actually creating a new jail."

Boeckman pointed out that the situation with the facility has been there for awhile and he asked Coffman why this problem had not been budgeted for sooner. Coffman said he had only been the sheriff since January so the current operating budget is not his. He has negotiated a spending plan for 2025, but ultimately the item for jail maintenance and improvements will be through facilities and not his budget.

Candidates for Second District Geary County Commission, Geary County Clerk and the 68th House District also participated in the Chamber forum.

United Way of Junction City / Geary County will host its 2024-2025 “Kickoff Campaign” on Friday night at the Junction City High School varsity football game. The Kickoff Campaign will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. featuring a tailgate and raffles.

The meal will be smoked sausage, a bag of chips, and water. There will be a 50/50 raffle, along with another raffle, for a chance to win a camping package or a package filled with Junction City Blue Jay gear. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each. United Way will also have their new bright yellow United Way shirts to purchase for the year, which are $10.

The money raised from the kickoff campaign will help fund United Ways direct services and help with their partner agencies.

Week five of the high school football season has arrived, and the Junction City Blue Jays will host the Hays High Indians on Friday night at Blue Jay Stadium.

Junction City enters the matchup with a 1-3 record. For Hays, they enter even at 2-2.

The Blue Jays have had three consecutive losses against top-tier 6A teams. First in week two to Lawrence, then to Wichita Northwest in week three, and just last week, a shutout loss to Manhattan.

The Indians of Hays have also suffered losses against two top-tier 6A. Their first loss of the season was to 6A powerhouse Derby, and then they lost 34-30 in week three to Manhattan.

RILEY COUNTY —The family of a woman injured&nbsp; in an&nbsp;incident that occurred near the Aggieville district in the early morning hours of Friday, August 30, are offering an additional $10,000 reward for information in the case, according to the Riley County Police Department.

The initial report received by police indicated the young woman identified as 22-year-old Keena HIbbs, was found in the 800 block of Laramie Street after walking home from a local establishment.

&nbsp;Police are reviewing surveillance footage from Aggieville and surrounding areas and are following up on any leads to determine the cause of her injuries. Police encourage anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information to come forward and assist with the investigation. 

Tips may be called in directly to RCPD using 785-537-2112 or you can always contact Crime Stoppers at 785-539-7777 or toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m.&nbsp; Wednesday in Riley County.

A 1998 Chevy 1500 driven by&nbsp; Gary Romanski, 78, of Ogden, was traveling near Scenic Drive and Miller Parkway, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The driver lost control of the pickup. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Romanski was air-lifted to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment of his injuries.&nbsp;

The fourth annual Oktoberfest will bring crowds to downtown Junction City on Friday and Saturday. Washington Street between 6th and 10th Streets will be blocked off for the event.

One of the coordinators, Matt Hoover said that there will be food and beverage vendors, five beer vendors, cider plus approximately 50 craft and merchant vendors.&nbsp;

There will be multiple bands performing including Brass Rewind from&nbsp; 6-9 p.m. Friday, Der Manhattan 1-3 p.m. Saturday and Jolly Dutchmen Band 4-7 p.m. Saturday on stage at 8th and Washington.

There will be two kids zones and a car show.&nbsp;

Contests range from stein carrying and stein holding to&nbsp; a hammerschlagen contest. There will also be street fire shows and dances.

Football Frenzy comes to Valley View Senior Life

OSAGE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 10:30a.m. Sept. 30, a Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit conducted a traffic stop at milepost 139 on U.S. 75 highway for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

 During the stop, illegal narcotics were located. The deputy took 35-year-old Caleb M. Kidd of Abilene into custody and transported him to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges of Distribution of methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia and No drug tax stamp.

Sheriff: Kansas man accused of selling methamphetamine

Junction City Commissioners have approved a motion on expenditure of ARPA ( American Rescue Plan Act ) funds. A total of $1,656,783 is available.

The motion by Commissioner Jeff Underhill called for acceptance of recommendations by Interim City Manager Gerry Vernon with the exception of $500,000 proposed for Grant Ave. improvements. Items that were approved ranged from $200,000 for crack sealing of Sutter Woods Subdivision streets, $200,000 for remodeling and expansion of Fire Station Two and $250,000 for Coronado Park improvements to $70,000 for additional projects. The money removed from Grant Ave. will be included in a proposed plan to be developed by staff for parks and recreation projects throughout the community. That plan will be brought to the governing body at their next meeting.

A motion by Commissioner Richard Pinaire would have directed staff to accept proposals from each commissioner for $250,000. He favored spending a share on streets and alleys. Pinaire also expressed disappointment at the lack of commitment to streets and alleys.

A total of $1,656,783 is available.The motion by Commissioner Jeff Underhill called for acceptance of recommendations by Interim City Manager Gerry Vernon with the exception of $500,000 proposed for Grant Ave. improvements. Items that were approved ranged from $200,000 for crack sealing of Sutter Woods Subdivision streets, $200,000 for remodeling and expansion of Fire Station Two and $250,000 for Coronado Park improvements to $70,000 for additional projects. The money removed from Grant Ave. will be included in a proposed plan to be developed by staff for parks and recreation projects throughout the community. That plan will be brought to the governing body at their next meeting.A motion by Commissioner Richard Pinaire would have directed staff to accept proposals from each commissioner for $250,000. He favored spending a share on streets and alleys. Herington Elementary School has officially been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School! School Principal Dr. Nicholas Morgan said that on September 23rd, the United States Department of Education made the announcement with only four schools in Kansas receiving this honor. 

Herington Elementary School is continuing their tradition of excellence, as this is their second time being named a National Blue Ribbon School (2007).

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes all schools based on student performance data including assessment results, student subgroup performance, and graduation rates. Schools are recognized in both or either of two performing categories:

• Exemplary High Performing Schools: These schools are among the top performers in their state as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

• Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools: These schools excel in narrowing achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body.

Each nominated school submits a comprehensive application detailing its school culture, programs, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership, and family/community involvement.

The Kansas schools named as National Blue Ribbon Schools are Lincoln Elementary School in Junction City;  Herington Elementary School in Herrington; Sunflower Elementary School in Paola and Garfield Elementary in Augusta.

GEARY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Tuesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Ford F150 driven by Lashawndra T.&nbsp;Mollice Smith, 29, Wichita Falls, Texas, was northbound on Kansas 57 at Kansas 244 two miles north of Junction City.

&nbsp;The driver failed to yield the right of way at the intersection. The pickup and a southbound 2022 Ford F150 driven by Johnny R. Gibson, 42, Enterprise, collided.

EMS transported Smith and Gibson to Stormont Vail in Junction City. Two children in the 2012 pickup were in car seats and not injured. Both drivers were also properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The National Weather Service has implemented some changes to the cold weather products that they issue. These changes are effective as of today, October 1, 2024.

The products that used to be issued were called the Wind Chill Watch, Wind Chill Warning, and the Wind Chill Advisory. 

These products have been changed into the Extreme Cold Watch, Extreme Cold Warning, and the Cold Weather Advisory. 

Along with these changes, the criteria for issuing these products has changed slightly.

The main reason for these changes is to have better consistency across the US in relation to climatology of cold weather. 

These products remove any wind speed requirement and are issued when the actual temperature and/or wind chill temperature reaches these thresholds. 

Regardless of the wind speed, cold is cold!&nbsp; 

Extremely cold air comes every winter into at least part of the country and affects millions of people across the United States. The arctic air can be dangerous. Combined with brisk winds, dangerously cold wind chill values can result. 

People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to<a href="https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold-during">&nbsp;frostbite</a>&nbsp;and can succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes. Areas most prone to frostbite are uncovered skin and the extremities, such as hands and feet.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold-during">Hypothermia</a>&nbsp;occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division invite all military retirees to attend the annual Retiree Appreciation Day Oct. 19 at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue, Fort Riley. Military retirees of all services and their spouses, widows or widowers are welcome. Doors open for registration at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:30.

Col. Jerry Nunziato, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, will provide opening remarks to retirees, who will also hear from Col. Laudino Castillo, Irwin Army Community Hospital Commander. Throughout the day guests will get the latest information on TRICARE, Medicare, hospital services and other health care issues, veterans’ affairs, legislative issues, casualty affairs, long-term care insurance and many other topics of concern to military retirees. Many Veteran Service Organizations will also be on hand to provide information to attendees.&nbsp;

The public-health team from Irwin Army Community Hospital plans to provide vaccinations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for influenza, shingles, pneumonia, and tetanus.

Geary County Public Works is preparing for the colder months ahead. They are inviting all businesses who conduct snow and ice removal services to submit a sealed quote for five Geary County locations.

They are currently accepting sealed quote packets for the 2024 – 2025 winter season. All sealed quotes are due to the Geary County Public Works office on October 18, 2024, by 4:30pm. Sealed packets will be opened at the Geary County Commission meeting on October 21, 2024 at 11:15am.

County seeks bids for snow and ice removal

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said if the longshoreman's strike that started this morning continues for long, it will be a drag on the economy back here.

&nbsp;"It will have big impacts across the nation, but particularly for agriculture and manufacturing for this part of the country, that'd be the midsection of the country, the Mid-American region, as we call it," Goss said. "The survey came out this morning of manufacturers in this part of the country, including Kansas, indicating that the supply managers have built up inventories to some degree over the course of September, just in case there was a strike."

The group has not had an extended work stoppage for decades.

"The last time this happened in 1977, it was a 44-day strike," Goss said. "If we had a 44-day strike this time, it would be punishing to the ag economy and to the manufacturing economy."

The November presidential election is just five weeks away.

"The longshoreman are asking for a 77 percent increase in wages over the next six years," Goss said.&nbsp; Of course, they're probably not going to get that, but they're going to get a pretty big chunk. That's in addition to they want to stop the automation that's going on in the ports. And of course, that's going to be tough to negotiate that. But there's some real, real pressure among workers that they've been feeling since 2020, and we're seeing that coming out right now. We'll continue to see it coming out. And they see some real, I won't say an opportunity here, but with the presidential campaign going on, there will be some action in Washington, D.C. to halt this strike, if possible."

Goss doesn't expect President Biden to invoke Taft-Hartley, at least not in the short term, but if the strike drags closer to the election, he may change his mind.
