Konza Prairie Community Health Center has announced that Dustie Samuels, DO, has joined the organization as medical director for its clinics in Junction City, Manhattan, and Chapman.

Dr. Samuels graduated from Council Grove High School and received health education in emergency medicine from Kansas community colleges before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences from Kansas State University. She received her degree in Osteopathic Medicine from Lincoln Memorial University, DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee, and conducted her residency at the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education in Wichita, KS.

Dr. Samuels is a board-certified family medicine physician who comes to Konza from McPherson Center for Health where she provided full-spectrum primary care for patients of all ages. She is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and American Academy of Family Physicians.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Samuels also serves as adjunct clinical faculty at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Wichita. She also has experience as an instructor and provider in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support and Pediatric Life Support.

Junction City Parks and Recreation has ongoing multiple efforts. They include work with Quality Play for All on upgrades to Fifth Street Park including a fitness court, picnic shelter and two drinking fountains that will be completed in the May - June time frame.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Josh Gray, indoor soccer was a success at Spin City where more than 100 children participated.&nbsp;

There are plans for a flag football league running from March 19th to May 4th for youth ages 5-11. This will be 5 on 5 following NFL flag football rules. Sign up at junctioncity-ks.gov.

There will be a Spring Break Skate at Spin City, 915 South Washington,&nbsp; on March 11th, 13th and 15th. Admission will be $7.

Summer lifeguards are needed for the Municipal Swimming Pool. They must be ages 15 and up. For applicants there will be a $20 pre-test fee and classes will be held at the YMCA. Clerks are also needed to help run the concession stand and the basket room. Those applicants must be 14 and up. Apply at junctioncity-ks.gov.

Parks and Recreation works to provide opportunities

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad has announced its most ambitious operating schedule in the railroad’s 31-year history. The regular 2024 schedule will open on April 10, with some dinner trains and excursions scheduled&nbsp;during the KSU/KU Spring Breaks&nbsp;in March.&nbsp;

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said that the railroad will run as many as&nbsp;300&nbsp;trains this year, a number that includes 33 dinner trains, a possible 42 school charters, and an expanded 168-train excursion schedule. There will be two special events on the schedule: a return of the&nbsp;Great Pumpkin Patch Express&nbsp;Peanuts train in October and the railroad’s rapidly growing Christmas holiday tradition, the&nbsp;Cowtown Santa Express&nbsp;in November and December.

“We’ve never run this many trains before,” Boelling commented, “but last season, we learned that there is a great demand for what we do among people from an increasing geographical area.&nbsp;

Boelling noted that the railroad enjoyed a&nbsp;42&nbsp;percent increase in ridership in 2023, and that the A&amp;SV attracted passengers from over half of the communities in Kansas. But the railroad has increasingly attracted tourists from major metropolitan areas, including Wichita, Kansas City, Omaha, and Lincoln. He added that the A&amp;SV also attracted passengers from 42 states and seven foreign countries last year.

“Our passengers do more than just ride trains,” Boelling said. “On our trains, passengers learn how railroads built Kansas’ agriculture-oriented economy, and how so many Kansas towns and cities were directly established by the railroads. "

The railroad’s&nbsp;Smoky Valley Limited&nbsp;dinner train schedule has been greatly expanded for 2024, with more special themed trains featuring regional caterers and expanded menus. The A&amp;SV’s “Dining Car Heritage Series” returns in 2024, featuring menu items from the heyday of passenger train travel, when some of America’s finest dining was in railroad dining cars. The menus were researched by railroad historian Kevin Bailey, and the menus are being recreated by local caterer Lucinda Kohman.&nbsp;

Boelling said the&nbsp;Smoky Valley Limited&nbsp;is running more trains centered around holidays and special events.&nbsp;

Boelling said the schedule will feature more runs of the&nbsp;Flint Hills Express, the A&amp;SV’s excursion train, and the&nbsp;Meadowlark Flyer, the railroad’s school charter. Excursion trains will begin running in April on a Wednesday through Sunday schedule. School charters will run on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Excursion trains will run through September, Boelling said.

The addition of special event trains was a major draw for the railroad last year. The Peanuts-oriented&nbsp;Great Pumpkin Patch Express&nbsp;drew 1,658 passengers during Halloween season, and the&nbsp;Cowtown Santa Express&nbsp;drew 3,044 holiday season tourists.&nbsp;

Fuels are expected to burn efficiently in north central, northeast and east central Kansas Sunday afternoon.

 Actions: Do not burn outdoors. Never throw lit cigarettes out of a vehicle. Report any wildfires to local authorities immediately. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior. Always report areas on concern by calling 911.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dry conditions lead to fire concerns

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded Thursday to S. Milford Lake Rd. and Easy Jacks Rd. for a motor vehicle accident. Sean Hall of Enterprise was traveling north on S. Milford Lake Rd. in a 1993 Ford Ranger when a deer entered onto the roadway. In an effort to avoid the deer Sean over corrected and ran off the road to the left. This caused the vehicle to rollover, landing in a pasture upright. 

Hall reported minor injuries but declined EMS. A private service removed the vehicle.

Sheriff's Department works one vehicle accident

Washington, D.C. -&nbsp;U.S. Senator Roger Marshall joined a letter led by Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) in strong opposition to the EPA’s final rule revising the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) under the Clean Air Act, according to a media release from Marshall's office.

This rule would automatically deem parts of Kansas in violation of the Clean Air Act because of smoke from prescribed fires and even dust from high winds. This comes just before the season where ranchers across Kansas will use prescribed fire to kill invasive species and encourage the growth of new grass.

Menards reported an unknown suspect used a fraudulent check to pay for services. The estimated total loss associated with this case is estimated to be $6,072.

At the Kansas State University men’s basketball game on Monday, Landon Rozean of Hays made a layup, a free throw and a three-pointer in the Trifecta Challenge sponsored by the Kansas Insurance Department and Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt.

Rozean won $500 courtesy of the department and their educational initiative&nbsp;<a href="http://smartinvestks.com/">SmartInvestKS.com</a>, a website aimed at helping Kansans make smart investment decisions. Rozean is a freshman at Kansas State majoring in mechanical engineering.

K-State student wins $500 in basketball Trifecta Challenge

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting for the new Munson Arts Education Building, 131 West 7th Street, will be held on Tuesday, March 19th at 4 p.m.&nbsp;

According to C.L. Hoover Opera House Co-Director Joe Markley, this project undertaken by Junction City Opera House Inc. carries a cost of just over $2.5 million. As of now all but approximately $200,000 to $300,000 has been raised.&nbsp;

Markley confirmed that Michelle Munson was one of the major&nbsp; contributors to the project and the building is named in honor of her parents, Chuck and Deanna Munson, and her grandparents Ralph and Bernice Munson.

The new facility is part of what is now a three-building complex including the Opera House at 135 W. 7th,&nbsp; the Rolfs Building 133 W. 7th and the Education Building&nbsp; at 131 W. 7th.

The Munson Arts Education Building includes two rehearsal rooms upstairs, offices downstairs for the Junction City Little Theater and Junction City Arts Council and a conference room with a table that was built by John York. He is currently building chairs for the table.

There are dressing rooms in back of the Education Building, a kitchen and green room in the Rolfs Building plus offices, the stage, two levels of seating, a rehearsal - multipurpose room and offices in the Opera House.

On March 19th there will be tours and refreshments from 10-11 a.m. and again following the ribbon cutting from 4-6 p.m.

The Education Building is intended to accommodate primarily youth education.

Munson Arts Education Building will be unveiled

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (Feb. 28, 2024) – Stormont Vail Health has&nbsp; announced that the Flint Hills Campus has received funds to purchase a DRX-Revolution Mobile X-Ray System for use by the Imaging Department. The purchase of the mobile imaging unit enhances the quality of care across the Flint Hills Campus departments, including The Birthplace, Emergency Department, Medical Surgical Unit, and Surgery Center.

Stormont Vail Health received funds for the portable X-ray system through a grant from the Patterson Family Foundation with additional funding from the Stormont Vail Foundation. The focus of both organizations includes advancing health care as a part of strengthening communities.

The new X-ray system will provide the hospital in Junction City with the highest-quality imaging equipment to better serve the community. The device replaces an existing machine that lacks stability and ensures the Imaging Department can deliver imaging services in critical situations more effectively.

GEARY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 5:30a.m. Thursday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Freightliner semi driven by William Leo Taylor, 43, Plano, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 77 four miles south of Junction City.

The vehicle entered east ditch. The driver attempted to bring it back on the roadway and it overturned blocking both lanes of the highway.

EMS transported Taylor to Stomont Vail in Junction City. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Update from Geary County Emergency Management:

We have been able to open an additional alternative route You can still use J Hill Rd.  You can also travel US 77 Hwy. South to W. Lyons Creek Rd. To K157 Hwy back to US 77 Hwy.  We are being advised by wrecker crews the road will be closed until sometime between 11:00 a.m. and noon.

GEARY COUNTY —First responders are on the scene of a semi rollover on Highway 77 south of Interstate 70 in Geary County, according to a social media report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The accident occurred just before 5:30a.m.



Roadway is blocked and will be for several more hours. There are no report of injuries.

Driver hospitalized after semi rollover south of Junction City

JC Breakfast Optimists Learned About The Work Of The Salvation Army At the February 28 “Celebration of Optimism” meeting at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet. JC Breakfast Optimists heard about the important work being done to help Geary County families. Diahnca Quigley, Quanita Williams and Lois Tessendorf shared about the ongoing need of families and individuals who are homeless, cannot pay their water, gas, or heating/cooling bills while at the same time have enough food to survive.

Diahnca stated that “at Christmas time the Salvation Army red kettle campaigns, which begin in November, this year raised $7,000 and does not go far enough to meet all the needs of as many people as it was possible.” Quanita said that “the people the staff works with “need someone to give them hope, to tell them they are loved and get them the help them need.”

It was shared that in August of 2023, 3,000 individuals were helped directly or by referrals. Twelve hundred people were fed with Harvesters and local homeless food initiatives and 319 people came in and were counseled and/or referred for mental health needs.

In December of 2023 1,000 kids and people were helped not only in Junction City, but also Manhattan and Wamego areas. The local Salvation Army has several goals, which include obtaining a brick-and-mortar building in Junction City; to become a more visible presence in the Wamego area and to continue to partner with agencies, individuals and communities who want to see their neighbors succeed and become stable in all areas of their lives.

JC Breakfast Optimists learn about the work of the Salvation Army

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest.&nbsp;

Just before noon Wednesday arrested 39-year-old&nbsp;Jeremy Spaur of Manhattan on a Riley County District Court warrant for attempted murder in the first degree- intentional and premeditated, attempted aggravated battery- knowingly using a weapon to cause great bodily harm/disfigurement/death, aggravated assault- use of a deadly weapon, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

These charges stem from an event that transpired on or about February 12, 2022.&nbsp; Spaur was also charged with a probation violation and failure to appear.&nbsp; The original charges were for driving on a suspended license, driving without an ignition interlock, tag on the wrong vehicle, and no proof of insurance.

Spaur has previous felony convictions for burglary, theft, obstruction and drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Spaur is being held on a bond of $314,800, according to the RCPD.

Kan. felon jailed in Manhattan for alleged violent 2022 crime

The Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School in Junction City is looking at a projected shortfall of approximately $300,000 going into the 2024-25 school year. That message was conveyed to members of the community during a public forum on Wednesday at the Bradley Gym.

Shawn Augustine, who serves as the principal for the school, spoke to the audience along with Salina Diocese Superintendent Geoff Andrews and they then responded to questions. Augustine touched on key ideas that were expressed, pointing to one that came from senior class students. "It's all about family and it's all about trying something that you don't tear apart. And the way you have to move forward with that is you have to have different ways to generate revenue."&nbsp;

Augustine noted that one important point came from a recent graduate and would involve getting students out to speak more in the community, whether it's to other parishes or perhaps to Manhattan Catholic Schools to urge families to bring their eighth grade graduates over to Saint X for high school. "That's what this school does. It builds through faith, morals. It just builds so much for them."

There were multiple options mentioned for proceeding forward. They include number one, maintaining the school as a Pre-K through 12 operation. Other possibilities include maintaining Pre-K through six or Pre-K through grade five status. "I think our biggest thing right now is to figure out how we can keep everything the way it is, but also you have to have your balanced budget which is tough, " said Augustine.

Augustine characterized the event as an eye opener where everyone needs to work together for what is best in the community, keeping the school a Pre-K through 12 facility as it is now.

Augustine pointed to the annual school fundraising auction which will be held on April 20th. "We're wanting that to be bigger than it ever has been." He noted that they need to look at ways to help families who want what Saint X offers but can't pay the cost per student. Another idea involved a Pre-K through K program in the summer, and those in attendance were told that they could donate money to help with the shortfall.

On the projected $300,000 shortfall Augustine noted that it is a challenge but the school has been in that situation before. "I think the whole point of tonight was to ensure that any rumors were squashed, here's the situation we're in and how can we move forward and help. Augustine added it does seem like they are moving forward for another school year but there must be a determination on how to sustain for more years in the future."Because this is definitely a staple in the community that people do not want to let go of."

Andrews said this financial concern also exists in other schools in the Diocese.&nbsp;He noted that sustainability needs to be figured out and reaching class sizes of 12 to 15 students every year would help. Anderson also&nbsp; suggested getting a group of people and forming a committee to help with the sustainability issue.&nbsp;

The first round of substate basketball ended with heartbreak for Junction City, as the two seed Junction City Blue Jays were stunned by 15 seed Wichita East in overtime by a final score of 75-65.

A couple costly turnovers by Junction City and big shots going in for East helped the Blue Aces lead by three with less than 10 seconds left. Junction City junior guard Jackson Austin knocked down a corner three-pointer to send the game to overtime tied up at 56.

The overtime period saw Wichita East outscore Junction City 19-9 and complete the upset.

Several players scored tonight for the Blue Jays. Sophomore Lovell Autry scored a team high 22 points, Jackson Austin added 14 points, and Larkin Turner scored 12 points.

With the loss, the Blue Jays finish the season with a record of 18-3. Some highlights for this season include winning the Centennial League championship for the first time and 18 regular season wins, the most wins in a regular season.

Junction City had three seniors on the roster for the whole season. Seniors were Sylvester Jackson, Stewart Mitchell, and Tre Ruffin. Another senior that was part of the team prior to leaving at semester, was Michael Boganowski.

The ribbon cutting and grand opening for the Highwind Brewing Company, 726 North Washington, in downtown Junction City was a big business highlight on Wednesday.

Eleven craft beers will be sold and there will be a full bar with wine and cocktails. Coca Cola products will be available along with tea and coffee. There will eventually be two restaurants including Mill Pizza where signature pizzas and salads are served. 726 Bistro is still under development. Eventually it will serve appetizers and hand held burgers.

Highwind Brewing Company celebrates their grand opening

According to KASB analysis, across the state of Kansas in the 2022-2023 school year, districts spent $382 million of funds that could have gone to general education on special education to backfill for funding not provided by state and federal officials. According to Leah Fliter with KASB, there is work on the House side to comply with the formula...but not spend any more money.

"The House K-12 Education Budget Committee has been having some discussions and having some hearings on bills," Fliter said. "That committee seems to be focusing on its own bill. They haven't bundled it all together yet, but the bill that they spent a lot of time on in committee was a bill that basically just tried to rewrite the current special education formula."

There is a little more hope for more money on the Senate side.

"They stripped out a line item for special education funding for fiscal year 2025," Fliter said. "They said they want to look at that again at omnibus, when they come back in April, after they hear consensus revenue estimate updates. What we have right now is, I think, the possibility on the Senate side, of some significant funding next year."

The special education statute is separate from the overall school finance formula, which the Kansas Supreme Court has said is funded constitutionally to the point that they dismissed the Gannon case earlier this year.
