After 40 years in business, Karen Eddy has decided it is time to retire and has closed the doors on her store, RC Hobbies. 

The store officially opened in May of 1983 in Junction City and has been a staple in the community for the past four decades. "This was my husbands dream," Eddy said. "He wanted to get the RC club going. We outgrew our first location in the first year and expanded to our current store and have been here for the last 39 years." 

Throughout the past couple of weeks many people haves stopped in and made their final purchases while sharing stories they will remember about the store. "It's been bittersweet," Eddy said. "There have been a lot of hugs and tears. It's been good." 

She enjoyed many parts of owning her own store and seeing the city expand. When asked about her favorite memories, several came to mind. Eddy said, "What always makes me feel good is when people come back and say they have to stop in and see us, that probably does me the biggest up."

Geary County employees were recently honored for years of service.

Emergency Management Director / Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges was recognized for 40 years of service, Linda Caraballo, Treasurer's Office 35 years, Attorney Janet Lockwood 25 years and from Finance Luisa White 20 years.

A total of 25 employees were recognized by the Geary County Commission.

The recent Bassmaster College Bracket fishing tournament at Milford Lake drew extensive video and social media views. According to an update provided to the Junction City Commission by Rick Dykstra the livestream by bassmaster.com streamed 1.3 million minutes. They had 106,000 site visits and 470,000 page views.

Fox Sports One provided two days of coverage resulting in 913,000 viewers and a total of 290 third party media sources ran the event with a potential of 6.7 million views. There were 2.8 million social media impressions with 967,000 video views with 122,000 engagements.&nbsp; Fox Sports Two showed all the reruns.

Dykstra said that every time it aired, at the beginning there&nbsp; was the statement "From Milford Lake and Junction City, Kansas." Dykstra commented that he received telephone calls from as far away as Florida, California and North Carolina from people who were watching the event. He called it outstanding that the city and county received that kind of exposure.

Dykstra noted numbers cited were from Bassmaster and Fox. The competition on the lake as held Sept. 30 - Oct. 2.

Eyes focus on Milford Lake

Ava Oentrich is a senior at Junction City High School (JCHS) in the Science, Engineering and Health (SEH) Academy. She is the daughter of Brad and Heather Oentrich.

Dana Wiegand, JC Breakfast Optimist Club Junction City High School Student of the Month Coordinator stated that “Ava has been an active participant in Class Committees, is currently serving as the secretary of the Senior Class, is a member of the Blue Jay Nation, Future Farmers of America (FFA), the volleyball and bowling teams, National Honor Society, S2S (Student to Student), Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Cross Country, and is a partner of the 1st Unified Bowling League at JCHS. Ava is also included in 4-H, a Farm Bureau Ambassador, and the First Presbyterian Youth Group. She has completed about 80 hours of Community Service as a high school student.”

One of her teachers wrote that “not only is Ava willing to go above and beyond, she takes the time to volunteer within our school. Ava is not only the FFA President, but she also is the first FFA District Secretary from our chapter and 4H Fair Queen for the 2023 year.”

Another teacher wrote that “when I think of Ava Oentrich, I think of her as a person who comes to the table with connections, ideas, and enthusiasm. She has a servant-leader heart. Ava is willing to put the time and effort into building up our membership (in FFA) and helping our community thrive. She is good at balancing school, extracurriculars and student life. She sees the big picture and knows there is a bigger role to play. I can’t wait to see what she does next.”

Ava plans to attend Kansas State University next year and study in the field of Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or Nursing.

MANHATTAN, Kan. —&nbsp;Temperatures are dropping and leaves are falling which means Halloween is quickly approaching. While the holiday is not always thought to be overly risky in terms of food safety, any time perishable foods are left out can be a nightmare.&nbsp;

“Perishable foods such as meat and cheese trays, pasta dishes or finger sandwiches should be kept in a refrigerator until the party starts,” said Karen Blakeslee, Kansas State University food scientist and coordinator of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center</a>.&nbsp;

Blakeslee shared tips on how to keep party food safe to eat:&nbsp;

“Wash your hands before preparing food and keep raw meats away from ready to eat foods to prevent cross contamination,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

When planning a Halloween bash, keep in mind food allergies. To avoid allergic reactions, Blakeslee suggests asking guests beforehand if they have any food allergies. Keep in mind that sesame is now the ninth major food that can trigger allergic reactions, she said.&nbsp;

Trick-or-treating can be a sticky situation if candy is not thoroughly inspected. “Parents should examine the treats to avoid any tricks that may be in their bags. If any treats are damaged or open, discard them,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

When gathering treats to hand out, consider non-food items for kids with food allergies. For parents, Blakeslee had another piece of advice to make Halloween a treat – and not a trick.&nbsp;

“Give your goblins a meal or snack before trick-or-treating to fuel them through the fun,” she said.&nbsp;

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7:30a.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Toyota Camry driven by Debra Odell, 66, Herington, was westbound on Kansas 4 two miles Southeast of Gypsum.

Th car struck a deer that entered the roadway from the right ditch.&nbsp; EMS transported Odell to Salina Regional Health Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

Kansas woman hospitalized after car strikes deer

Collaborative Title Services hosted a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday night, as they have officially opened their new business in Junction City at 306 East Chestnut Street. 

Collaborative Title Services has a location in Florida, but this is the first location in Kansas. President and owner of the company Imran Poladi spoke at the ribbon-cutting. "The name on the door means nothing if you don't have the right people," Poladi said. "We are so proud of our team in Orlando and here in Junction City, and soon to be in Manhattan." 

Jamie Wegenka is the Geary County Manager. Wegenka is a familiar face in Junction City and has done similar work in the past. She is excited about the new venture and is excited to officially open their doors at their location at 306 East Chestnut Street. "We can't wait to develop relationships with each and every one of you," Wegenka said. 

Several people attended to the ribbon-cutting, including former Kansas City Chiefs running back and Chiefs hall of famer Christian Okoye. 

Okoye and Poladi are friends, and Okoye agreed to attend the event to take photos and sign autographs at the ribbon-cutting.&nbsp;

<a>Eastbound I-70 on-ramps to be closed in Junction City to help ease K-State gameday traffic congestion</a>

<a></a><a></a><a></a><a>On Saturday, October 21, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close two eastbound I-70 on-ramps ramps at Junction City in Geary County.</a>

From 12 to 6 p.m. the eastbound on-ramps at J Hill Road/Grandview Plaza (exit 299) and K-57 (exit 300) will be closed in an attempt to ease traffic congestion due to anticipated K-State football traffic.

For K-State fans traveling to the game, the Kansas Department of Transportation suggests allowing extra travel time and using an alternate route such as U.S. 77 to the north.

During construction, traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction as median crossovers are used to carry all traffic at a reduced speed through the work zone on the eastbound lanes.

Construction is part of a multi-phase $30 million project including construction of temporary crossovers, pavement replacement, replacement of drainage structures, rehabbing bridges, and resurfacing of some local routes which is scheduled to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.

Donna Swihart is the Manager at the 12th Street Community Center in Junction City. She has worked with the City of Junction City for the past 12 years. She believes that community involvement is important and stated “I have a job where I get paid to play.”

The 12th Street Community Center is located at 1002 W. 12th Street where there are rooms and gym space for rent and programs set up for all ages. Some of the free programs include Walk-4-Fitness from 7:00 AM until 9:00 AM Monday through Friday and Pickleball from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday through Friday and Tuesday evenings from 6 until 8:00 PM. Dona said “Pickleball is a paddle sport that is easy to learn and fun for all ages. All equipment is provided.”

Donna also said that “on the first, third and fourth Fridays of each month between 5 and 6:00 PM (or the food is gone), Breaking Bread of JC brings our community together by serving a great meal at no charge.”

There are Open Gym Hours Mondays through Fridays between 11 AM and 8:00 PM and on Saturdays from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM (subject to change for gym rentals). Momentum Volleyball Club offers free instructional volleyball for K-6th graders each Sunday through November 5th.

Youth programs include Safe Sitter Classes with sessions open to 6th through 8th graders November 10th and 11th. Mrs. Swihart told the Optimist Club members that “Safe Sitters classes are provided to students to learn skills in caring for children of different ages, safety, and behavior management as well as how to run their own babysitting business. Instruction includes infant and child choking rescue, and CPR. Two other classes are Art lessons and Mad Scientist Fun!”

Fitness Programs include Yoga, Sit and Be Fit, Zumba and use of the Fitness Center. All-Treats Day! will be October 26th from 6:00-7:30 PM after the Costume Parade downtown. For more information about these programs and facilities usage, please contact Dona Swihart at 785-238-7529.

You can apply to serve on the new Junction City Metropolitan Planning Commission. City Manager Allen Dinkel reported that a list will be brought to the next city commission meeting to consider for the new MPC. To apply contact city hall including the city clerk or city manager.

Dinkel said there are a few applicants but more are needed.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a crash in Riley County have made an arrest.

The crash occurred just before 9:30p.m. Tuesday&nbsp;near the intersection of Green-Randolph Road and Tuttle Creek Boulevard in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 22-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were&nbsp; victims. Police arrested Faye Evans, 34, of Blue Rapids on requested charges of driving under the influence, and aggravated battery. Faye was issued a total bond of $17,000 and was confined at the time of this report.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police released no additional details early Wednesday.

Junction City Commissioners have approved a staff recommendation to amend the contract between the City and Junction City Police Officers Association for 2024. Instead of the original 4% increase for sergeants and below that was planned the commission agreed to an amendment calling for a 6% increase.

City Manager Allen Dinkel noted that falls in line with the amount budgeted this past summer. That's when the 2024 spending plan was prepared.

Donations&nbsp; postmarked Tuesday can also still be accepted until Friday. Local foundations will also provide matching funds bringing the overall total to be invested into the community to approximately $515,000.

Among organizations the top recipient of donations was the Junction City Family YMCA with $35,039.32. The Geary County Food Pantry received $29,390.93.

Greater Geary Community Foundation Match Day raises $369K

Junction City Commissioners have received a request for $100,ooo and a waiver of building permit fees totaling about $2,000 for a a proposed new Food Pantry building.

The demand for food is increasing in the community. A total of 1,351 people received from the Food Pantry in September, up from 880 last April. Food insecurity is a problem in the community caused by such challenges as reduction in SNAP benefits, inflation and food prices.

The Food Pantry has acquired property at 7th &amp; Clay for the new facility. The estimate on construction of the 48 x 80 foot building covering 5,840 square feet has been calculated&nbsp; at $500,000. It will include in addition to storage space a kitchen for cooking classes, adjacent parking and hopefully an outside community garden. The current facility consists of about 3,840 square feet.

Commissioners were informed that the funding request would be a one time ask. Mayor Pat Landes told Food Pantry representatives, "what you do every day is extremely important." The City will take the request under consideration.

Right now 14.1% of the community is food insecure and 31%of the food distribution goes to children.

USD 475 Performing Arts will present the Fall Fiddles Orchestra Concert Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Junction City High School Auditorium. There will be performances by the orchestras from Junction City High School, Junction City Middle School and Fort Riley Middle School.

Please report any positive cases to the Health Department. (This is not a list of all the symptoms of Covid-19). Please isolate yourself at home for five days. Please do not return to work until you are fever free for 24 hours. Seek emergency treatment if you have pale, gray or blue colored skin, lips, or nail beds, confusion, pain in chest area, trouble drawing a breath.
